I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello JingleJangle, and welcome to Seven Forums.

It looks like your shortcut arrow overlay icon got messed up somehow. You can use either method in the tutorial below to restore the arrow icon. Method Two is the easiest way with the program.

When I would create a desktop icon for a website in Windows XP I'd see an icon that was specific to the ALL white icon FILE same desktop icons website as my show site You know like the round fox with the flaming tail for Firefox or the red M for gmail But when ALL my website desktop icons show as same white FILE icon I drag a url and drop it ALL my website desktop icons show as same white FILE icon to the desktop in using Firefox btw I get none of the site-specific icons I see them in my bookmarks list but on the desktop every icon is only the white rectangle that I thought indicated a file on your computer not an internet website What gives Is this a Firefox thing Can I create a desktop icon in another way I seem to recall that in XP creating one was as simple as a right mouse click anywhere on your site and picking quot create desktop icon quot but that doesn't work in I'm an old fuddy duddy and I want desktop icons as well as bookmarks and I don't want them all to look the same I can put up with not being able to do anything about the text color for the names of icons if I can actually have a hello different icon for every site To anyone who can and will help--thanks Smoked

A:ALL my website desktop icons show as same white FILE icon

I usually drag the little icon on the left end of a URL in the Address bar to the Favorites toolbar or to the Desktop, not the URL itself. The icon itself relies solely upon a Web site having a favicon.ico file on it somewhere. [I've lost track of it but I used to have a small program that could harvest favicon.ico files and save them but that was back with WinXP and IE6, don't know if it would work with later versions.]

All of sudden, most of the shortcut icons on my desktop have a white rectangle added to them with a small system icon in the middle of this white rectangle. Making a new shortcut still creates this "sub-icon". However, if I simply create a text document on the desktop it's ok. The weird thing is that some icons have this problem and some don't (e.g. folder shortcuts) - see screenshot below.

I have tried deleting the iconcache.db file and running a tweak called LnkFix, both to no avail. I also booted in Safe Mode and they are there too.

In desperation I did an 18 hour Acronis system restore to a few days ago when I don't recall having the problem. Still there!

Any help would be most welcome.

Kind regards

This is an issue with your shortcut arrow overlay on the icon. Restoring the default overlay should sort this for you.

Windows 7, using IE9. Dragging url to desktop to create shortcut seems to work EXCEPT the ison is a blank, default windows type icon. The icons did appear in the past and after the recent update the icon is the same default icon for all url shortcuts.

How can I return the icon to its original state?

In Windows 7 you simply either hover the mouse over or click the 'Show desktop' button that sits immediately to the right of the date/time on the task bar:

Hello all.
First time here and probably not the last on account of Murphy's Law.
My OS is Windows 7 Home Premium Edition (x64).
I installed IE11 with no problems.
Once completed, I rebooted but could not locate the IE desktop icon.
Inspected the Internet Explorer folder. All files seem to be there including the .exe file. After clicking on this IE11 .exe file, nothing happened.
Checked the Control Panel to ensure IE11 was in fact installed and that it was "activated." All in order.
This is a mystery as I have used previous versions of IE without any problems.
Any attempts, to resolve this glitch, will be appreciated greatly. Cheers.

This is a very simple request, somewhat annoying because I KNOW it's simple, but I can't for the life of me remember where to go to change it!!

Basically I just want to know how to see the desktop background wallpaper under an Icon name rather than the colour the desktop background (behind the picture)is set to.

Any help would be most appreciated!

Oh yeah my OS is Win XP Home SP2.

PS. I feel really stupid right now.

A:Showing background wallpaper under desktop icon text...

There's two settings that can cause it.

1. Right click the desktop and choose 'arrange icons by' and make sure that 'lock web items on desktop' is unchecked.

2. Open the Control Panel and select System. On the Advanced tab click the settings button under Performance. The box for 'use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop' should be checked.

hi i ve begun to really get concerned and annoying with my problem It never did this before sort of out of the blue Ive also done all sorts of virus ad-ware scans defrag etc Everytime i reboot desktop loads fine all icons etc Even virus program shows up in start bar But the computer will laag and i cant really do anything until a few minutes pass by and the Wireless Icon shows up in the start bar Its important since i Use it to connect to the internet Does anyone know why it could be taking so long to load up and start Everything else seems to load desktop not and laags showing up it up after until shows Icon boot, Wireless up After it finally shows Wireless Icon not showing up after boot, and desktop laags until it shows up itself everything runs smoothly up to minutes is abnormally too long of a wait just for the wireless connection to load On another note my startup does seem a little longer than nornal when it first starts before the xp Wireless Icon not showing up after boot, and desktop laags until it shows up logo there is a blinking dash line and it blinks longer than it use too Sorry for the long explanation if anyone has any ideas please let me know Ive also tried uninstalling wireless connection and letting it reinstall and drivers r updated nbsp

A:Wireless Icon not showing up after boot, and desktop laags until it shows up

Check your MSCONFIG (start/run/msconfig/enter) go to the startup tab and this has what your XP loads on bootup. In there look at each entry and decide if you REALLY need it or not. BTW Spyware and ad-ware will put junk in there as well. Uncheck anything you don't want loading on startup and you will notice the PC starting quicker.

Be careful playing in this though as if you disable too many devices you can have other issues.

Hi again,

it seems that the Computer option in the start menu has gone missing, and clicking customize doesn't work, since it's not an option there. If it hadn't been for my shortcut to Computer in my quick launch, I probably wouldn't be able to go there. When I do go there though, it doesn't show any of my drives, just a white background :\ Also, it seems I can't get it to display on my desktop, since in the Desktop Icon settings it shows up greyed out..

When I look at the desktop in Explorer, the file is no longer there either. Is there any way to get rid of the icon on the visible desktop?

Things to try.
1. Drag and drop to recycle bin.
2. Right click on it, delete
3. Right click on it, send to mail recipient, mail it to yourself and then delete the new mail.
4. Send to dvd,usb memory stick and then format to remove it.
You could also use a little program, (Search Everything) find it and remove it. With this program you must be careful what you are removing.

So yeah, I currently have this "file" on my desktop which I can not delete. I've tried a few programs like tuneup utilities and I still can't get rid of it. My computer says that the file either "does not exist" or "can not be located". So pretty much it's just an icon to my understanding? I pretty much can't do anything to it. It just sits on my desktop.

I'm hoping it's not a virus, and so far my anti-virus has not detected any viruses. It was a downloaded mp3 file that a friend grabbed from some random website.

Ok, so long story short, my roommate pranked me the other day and I want revenge. A:Changing the desktop icon of a video file

I really don't like your idea of a practical joke, but on the technical side, you could always use a shortcut to the video--I'm guessing that its a shortcut you wan't to replace anyway, so the tiny curvy arrow won't matter.

Hi, you know its location, so I'd suggest booting to a command prompt and trying to delete it from there. Caution as the drive letter will change.

Or, if you prefer a more familiar environment, get Kyhi's bootable disk (DVD or maybe flash drive) from the top of the Software and Apps section here, boot from it and try deleting it that way.

Or, you could try using a program like FileAssassin.

How can one adjust the file name length of desktop icons?
I have found the default setting on a new Windows 7 installation to be much too short.

A:How Increase Desktop Icon File Name or Filename Length?

Do you mean the actual file name or are you talking about the horizontal icon spacing, which if made bigger enables you to place a longer file name on one line?

If it is the latter, just right-click the desktop and choose Personalize>Windows Color>Advanced Appearance Settings.

From the Item: drop-down list choose Icon Spacing (Horizontal) and choose a size.

Click OK>Apply.

A:[SOLVED] Icons on desktop have 'missing file icon' instead of shortcut arrow?

Well, the first thing I am going to ask is if you backed up your registry (You never should make changes to the registry - especially if its a never heard of online tweak - without backing it up) That's the short fix, if you did not back up your registry then please bare with me.

Please test the following:
-Double click "My Computer"
-Go into your C:// drive
-Enter the "Program Files" folder
-Go into any folder containing an installed program, and right click on the exe file inside
-"Create Shortcut"

If a shortcut is created within the folder without that ugly missing file icon, then you can just simply go and do that with all your other programs, drag the shortcuts to your desktop, and delete the previous shortcuts. (Then you can rename them something more straightforward, instead of shortcut to so and so just so and so)

If that did not work, I would try a registry cleaner. CCleaner is free and has a basic registry optimizer built in, though you could try a more specific program, such as a RegSeeker.

If none of those work, then please get back to me on it. (I'll probably have thought of another fix by then)

By the way, now that you mentioned those shortcut arrows, I'm getting annoyed at the ones on my desktop!

A while ago, ALL my htm and html file icons in Windows Explorer changed to white paper icons with the corners turned town.

I do not have this problem with any other icons--just htm and html.
I do not have this problem with other file managers, such as XYplorer or Shelless.

The problem is only htm and html file icons in Windows Explorer.

Any suggestions appreciated.

I have a toolbar on my taskbar titled "Programs". It has about eight folders in it. I made another toolbar, and placed it directly adjacent to the Programs toolbar, to obscure the eight folders and force it to be a dropdown menu.

Trouble is, as soon as I lock my taskbar, right next to the arrow that displays the eight items of my Programs toolbar in menu-form, one of the eight items is showing up as an icon, as if the other toolbar isn't close enough to the Programs toolbar in order to completely obscure the eight items.

Here's what I mean in graphic form:

It's bugging me to no end. Anyone else had this problem/resolved it?

A:Toolbar on taskbar should only be showing an arrow but is showing icon

Hello thewonkits, and welcome to Seven Forums.

I notice this happens when using small icons for a toolbar. If you like, you could unlock the taskbar, right click on the dotted separator line to the left of the two top far left toolbars (one at a time) click on View and Large Icons, then lock the taskbar to see if that may look ok to you. It will make the top row a bit bigger though.

Hopefully someone may know a better way to hide that bit of icon poking out when locked.

You may have changed a Windows setting. Try a System Restore and choose a date before the problem started occurring. If you are using XP open Help, which has a link to System Restore to start it.

The "no icon" icon is that icon that shows while the system is booting up, smaller than other 'normal' desktop shortcut icons. It is then replaced with the 'official' icon for that shortcut..

After removing some malware that prevented access to the internet, I found that all my desktop shortcut icons are now overlaid with that "no icon" icon.
If I drag a new shortcut icon off windows explorer, as soon as I release the mouse drag - that "no icon" icon immediately over lays the original icon.
They still work, but is untidy and makes the original icon unreadable.

I created a new user, and upon logging that user on, all IT'S desktop shortcut icons are also over laid.

What to do?

Good morning guys!
I have just seen this icon in my adobe photoshop & adobe illustrator program folder.
I don't know if this icon is normal or it is a virus .
Any help will be highly appreciated.
Thanks in advance

A:Is this icon normal in windows ?

I've never seen it before but given that both are executable files, the norm is that the icon is created by the developer (not by Windows itself) so it wouldn't be rare to see different things.
To be sure, check the file properties and see if the digital signature is valid and from Adobe itself.

Hello, I have a red dot with a white x in it that is shown right next to my speaker icon on my computer display monitor bottom task bar. When I put my curcer over the red dot a box comes up saying "Nospeakers or headphones are plugged in". But they are plugged in. I click on the speaker icon and it brings up a trouble shooting window and I mark a circle to say the speakers are plugged in to my headphone port in the front of my computer. Then I click next and when the troubleshooting says it is done it says it can not find the problem. I had windows 8 but a couple months ago I went to a computer store and had windows 10 installed, now I have this issue. I appreciate any input on how I can make the x by my speaker icon disappear.

Just want to give an update, I think the trojan or spyware not only disabled HijackThis to run, it does the same thing for other anti-virus software as well. Kaspersky and Windows Defender neither will start now on my laptop. I tried safe mode too, no luck! I guess online scan is the only way to scan it, which I attached the log in the first post, Please help......guys!

Thanks ahead!!!

I am new to these forums so I hope this is placed in the correct section. I have been googling for a while now and I cannot find anything which is helping me. About a week ago the calculator started opening and then closing instantly so I tried re-registering the windows apps following a guide which used the powershell and running a command. This unfortunately seems to have made the situation worse and I now get @Microsoft.windowsapps.calculator appearing when I search for the calculator in start and the store displays a white icon and does not open. I have attached screenshots of what happens below:

Ok so my Toshiba laptop was recently upgraded (clean install) of windows 7 Ultimate -64 bit.
It worked perfectly fine and fast.. now it jst freezes after windows 7 loads.
It starts up normally and then when all the Icons are refreshing (turn into white paper icons) it freezes along with the mouse. Can't do anything but turn off. It ALWAYS happens. I can boot onto safe mode fine.

A:Freeze/Hang while loading Icons. White paper looking ICON?

First, try running an anti-virus scan using Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (the free version). Then try performing a clean boot as shown in the tutorial - Troubleshoot Application Conflicts by Performing a Clean Startup.

Hope this helps

Please help with a obscure problem. My system has been driving me batty.

On my HTPC 10 feet interface I use the Win7 full screen magnifier frequently. When I click on the magnifier the Magnifier options rectangle opens for a short period then morphs into a spyglass but in a couple of seconds the spyglass morphs into a useless little white square blank area.

Before the problem the little spyglass icon stayed active and clicking it would bring up the Magnifier control rectangle allowing me to close the magnifier. Clicking the useless little white square blank area does nothing so I have to go down to my magnifier icon on the taskbar to close the application.

Rebuilding the icon cache didn't help.

I can't remove the icon and haven't a clue as to what it's supposed to represent.
It appears every single time I use Internet Explorer 11 so it appears to be tracking me.
I Googled MPWD and found that it's associated with Apple.
I don't own, nor have ever owned, any Apple device, or downloaded anything to do with Apple.
I erase the icon when it appears, but every time I use I.E. it pops right back up.
Also, if I don't erase it, it's replicated every time I use I.E. making multiple desktop icons.
I've checked its attributes but can't find it on any of my SSD's or HDD's.
It's more than aggravating now, I think it may be a serious security risk.
Any ideas exactly what it may be and how to get rid of it?

I am running Windows XP SP2 and have a problem with the webpage icon shortcut. When I go to a given program using Start > All Programs > any program with a link to their web page, the icon displayed is the default document icon %SystemRoot%\system32\SHELL32.dll (1) and not the web browser icon IE or FF. I have to change these manually by finding the icon target and changing it for each program's webpage.

Is there a way to correct this where I don't have to manually change each one but where the change would apply to all program's webpage shortcuts? I would like for the webpage icons to display the FF icon.

Many thanks for any help.

A:Webpage icon not showing

Try right clicking on one and choose "Open With" and then "Choose Program". A list should appear. Select Firefox from the list and make sure the "Always open this type of file with this program" checkbox is selected. Then hit OK. See if that works.

I noticed recently that all the icon thumbnails in programs (Corel, Adobe CS3) are all showing up as the generic broken link icon (a page with 3 shapes of different colors whereas should be the actual icon from the specific programs). I also noticed that in my music folders all the albums had a pile of thumbnails everywhere in each individual folder also there's this "thumbs.db" file showing up in each individual folder.

I'm a little bit confused as in what had happened and would like to know how to resolve it. I suspect is something to do with the registry error.
Any help would be appreciated.

A:PDF Icon Showing Generic

Hello Dawter -
There are 2 general ways to do this -
1. Un / Reinstall the program
2. Right click on the Icon and select Properties > Often there is an option to "Change Icon"
If you select option 2 a range of mainly Generic icons are offered to you - Select one of the offered items.
If this option is not offered, yours may just pop back, or you can use Option 1-
Thank You -

My usb icon does not show. Its not a big deal but it really annoys me when things dont work the way they are supposed to especially when they used to. This happened about a month ago. I turned on my laptop and bam, all of a sudden icons arent showing up and looking through forums i have fixed all but one. When i plug in any mass storage device (usb; flash drive, external hard drive, mp3 player) the icon shows a general icon as if the icon was missing. I have attatched a picture so you can see exactly what I am talking about. If anyone knows how to fix this it would be GREATLY appreciated.

A:Windows 7 - USB Icon not showing up

hi Alex, and welcome to sevenforums,

If one or more of your icons are not displaying correctly, or that your icon cache is corrupted, then you might consider rebuilding the icon cache to reset and reload the icon images into the icon cache.

try this - and let us know if it worked.

you may have to reboot after doing it.

I am trying to add an email manually using the Mail (32 bit) icon in Control Panel. The icon appears normal, as opposed to the blank icons some other users might have faced. When i click on it the cursor turns to a circle for a few seconds and then nothing happens.

I cannot add an email account manually through Outlook (2013), it just wont let me.

Thank you.

A:Mail app doesnt launch when clicked on. Icon appears normal.

Hi dhr. welcome to the Forum.

I just checked my Mail in Control Panel & it wont work either. Perhaps a recent Windows Update has caused a problem with it.

But you should be able to add an email account through Outlook 2013. What is stopping you from doing that, can you supply more information.

Hello bakelite, and welcome to Seven Forums.

If the IE shortcut still works, then you might see if rebuilding the icon cache may help.

If not on both, then you could see if unpinning the icon, then pinning the iexplore.exe file below to your taskbar to recreate it may show better.

Hi all.

Had a bizarre problem since installing Windows 7 that I'm hoping can be solved relatively easily.

The SD card icon in Explorer has always just shown up as a generic unknown file type icon.

I've tried rebuilding the icon caches and assigning an icon manually but neither has worked.

Apart from that everything is working spiffingly, it's just this one niggling issue that's stopping it from being perfect.

Hope someone can help.

In my system Windows XP Pro SP2 is installed. In my system one DVD-Rom and one CD-Rom is installed with one virtual drive (daemon tools).

From last few weeks only DVD-Rom showing a yellow icon in the Device manager and not aceesible in Windows but today all three of them showing yellow icon and also not coming in the windows explorer.

I try to uninstall all of them and also remove the secondary controller but the problem doesnt solved. I also download a latest version of the new virtual drive but showing same yellow icon.

Bios can easily recognizing and safe mode also showing yellow icon. So, please suggest me what i do..? I think this is not a hardware problem... but a software problem. I also dont use system restore so cant revert back the system.
