I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, I am working on a laptop with Win 7 x64 Home Premium, SP1.

It was recently pretty badly infected, but has been thoroughly cleaned, and all additional bloatware uninstalled.

I am unable to unlock the taskbar, nor able to pin any shortcuts to it. There's also a strange folder that keeps appearing on the desktop, called %localappdata%, with a subfolder called 'elevatedDiagnostics'.

I enabled gpedit.msc. I have tried using the sevenforums supplied bat file to restore all Group Policies, to no avail. I searched inside of gpedit to the location that controls the locking of the taskbar, and it appears normal, as 'not configured', as are all the other entries under 'start menu and taskbar'.

I am trying to repair this without doing a full re-install of windows. I'd actually rather know *why* this is happening, and fix it manually.

thanks for any help!

A:Can't unlock Taskbar, Can't Pin to Taskbar, odd folder on desktop.

It often isn't enough to clean up a badly infected PC so I would strongly consider doing a Clean Reinstall Windows 7 especially if this is factory-installed Win7 which is the worst install of Win7 one can have anyway.

Otherwise run a full scan with Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware followed by SFC /SCANNOW Command.

Hi All

Whenever I restart the computer or something goes wrong with explorer.exe and it has to close down, the items in QL all revert back to alphabetical order. I have it set up so the ones I use more often, are displayed and the rest are hidden away in the extension. Is there a way I can 'lock' these items in place?

A:Quick Launch in the Taskbar

hello, I had this problem before also, Right click on your taskbar near the quick launch icons and scroll down till you see "lock the taskbar", it worked for me.
also if you have alot of icons in your QL grab the dividing line with your mouse and move it to the right a little and you should be able to see more.

I just recently downloaded a new version of Quick Time. It put Quick Time and Quick Time Player on my task bar. Is it necessary to have it there to watch downloaded video? I know I can remove it by going to startup but would that effect performance? Also when I installed a new cdrw/dvdrom that came with Nero express software, incd was part of the software package. Do Nero and incd work together? Do I need to keep incd in startup in order for Nero to work correctly? Thank you in advance for your help.

Today I noticed that there is a small problem in the height of the Win7 taskbar if I select Large icons in the Quick Launch toolbar. (before I always used small icons)

In the Large view the Win7 taskbar doesn't fill the space vertically but is aligned to the top leaving some empty space at the bottom.
Please check the attached screenshots to better understand what I mean.

I know is really a small detail, but maybe someone knows a way around it anyway^^

However, I have just installed the latest Adobe Reader update (9.1.3) and several of the taskbar quick launch 'buttons' show and work but the icons themselves do not show - ie the icons are blank. Whether there any way to add it to list of toolbars in the taskbar context menu like the address, links, and desktop toolbars?

I keep 'losing' my quick-launch icons on the left-hand side of the task-bar. The icons first become inoperative, and shortly afterwards vanish altogether. Hovering the mouse pointer over the quick-launch corner does briefly produce the outline of buttons, and the "tip box", but nothing further. They do return if I re-boot, but are soon gone again. If I right-click-Open Folder, Win explorer opens the folder containing the links, and clicking on those links does work. Any ideas folks?

Right click on All Programs and select explore. Expand “Programs” and drag or paste a shortcut for the program you want to run at startup into the “Startup” folder.

You can just drag icons from your desktop to the quick launch.

To add stuff to the system tray (which is what I think you want to do) you can get one of dozens of freeware tray managers. This one looks like it will do what you want: If you don’t like that have a look through this list:

You might have a look at RunIt. You just right click on the top of the screen and a menu drops down. You can put anything you want in the menu. It is a lot easier than looking through all of the icons in the tray:

Hi all I am fairly new to Windows 7 and its quick launch taskbar. However when I started using it once I clicked on a quick launch icon it stacked it to itself after opening. for instance Firefox or Chrome. Now however when I click one it quick launch icon does not "stack" after opening it creates another icon that then does stack. It now does this for everything on my quick launch. Any ideas. I know it is not a big deal but it drives the old lady crazy and I hate hearing about it LOL Thanks for looking and your help.

A:Windows 7 taskbar quick launch Does not stack creates new

Hello Nick, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Technically Quick Launch is a taskbar toolbar and not a pinned item. This is why when you open/run a item from Quick Launch, it will still have a separate icon appear on the taskbar for it's opened window. There's nothing that you could do about this other than pinning the item/program in Quick Launch on the takbar itself instead. This way you could run it from the taskbar instead of Quick Launch.

Hope this helps,
Relevancy 50.31%

So lets say you have a program open, and its not pinned to the taskbar, calculator for example. You close it, and the animation for the programs icon on the taskbar disappears smoothly. Now, if I pin the calculator onto the taskbar and open it (or any current taskbar pinned item) and close it, the icon disappears with a sort of a chunky, or "blocky" animation leaving just the normal taskbar icon.

My question is, should this happen or is my Windows install lagging somehow? Can anyone recreate this and see if you get a similiar result? Simply, non taskbar pinned apps icons seem to close smoother, while ones that are pinned dont really have an animation and just close with maybe 3 different frames.

A:Quick Question About Closing Apps/ Taskbar (Could someone test this? )

Hello Keyes,

This would be the Animations in the taskbar visual effects setting. It's normal for there to be a slight delay with the animation. If it's to long or jagged, then you may have something else running that's using a lot of resources causing a temporary longer delay for this.

If you like, you could turn off (uncheck) this setting to have them be instant instead.

Hello Skippy, and welcome to Eight Forums.

I installed Quick Launch on my Taskbar (Windows 7, 64-bit).

I don't know how to position it next to the Start button.

The area in the Taskbar between the Start button and the Quick Launch toolbar appears to be reserved to display open applications.

The image below shows my current taskbar when I open a window that has a quick-launch icon (e.g. Opera) as you can see it combines the window and the quick-launch icon together however I would like it to create a separate taskbar item rather than doing this. Hi everyone, this is my first post so please be patient.

i have a folder with around 2500 files in there, now i need to make a folder for each file to go in with the same filename as the original file.
is there a program anywhere that i can download that will sort this out for me, or do i have to manually create 2500+ folders, name them and drag and drop the files in myself?
please help because this could take a long time.

I somehow accidently deleted the (default) "Quick Launch" folder in my: "C:\Users\Luc\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer"

So I created a new folder called "Quick Launch" again, and re-added the Quick Launch bar to my Windows taskbar. Now everything works fine and I can add quick launch icons into it, but sometimes after I reboot my laptop all the icons are completely out of order again. So I can put them back in order again (like: 1. Desktop, 2. MSN, 3. Paint) but on the most random moments it gets unsorted again after a reboot. (like: 1. Paint, 2. Desktop, 3. MSN)

Could this be a folder option I forgot to set or is it some bug within my Windows 7 installation?

Note: I never had this on my previous Windows 7 installation, but I never accidently removed my Quick Launch folder there.

You can right click on the quick launch and see if you have the option to lock
If so try it.
If lock does not work, use system restore to go back before you made the error

First I'd like to apologize if this is somewhere else of the forum, I did run a search but did not find anything really close. I'm wondering if there is a folder in the \Windows directory or else where that contains the shortcuts of the taskbar. There is an icon I'd like to change but it has frozen me out of that setting

Ok, I found the location of the folder: C:\Users\user_name\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar

still have the original problem of not being able to change the icon

A:taskbar folder

Best to create a desktop shortcut first and change the shortcut icon then launch the program and then pin it to the taskbar.

By default when you install a Video card, it disables the onboard video. You can enable it again in the bios, if that is what you want, but this always causes problems. Your Video card should have 2 outputs (DVI and VGA) to run 2 monitors already, you don't need to enable the onboard video.

Ok so I would like to do something that is like a jumplist and a folder shortcut combined. I don't know if this is possible, that is why I am asking.

So what I am looking for is this:
-a shortcut on the taskbar. (must be able to have a icon)
-when left clicked a popup folder like below appears. (once a item in the popup is clicked the folder should disappear)

I know of similar ways with folder toolbars on the taskbar, but thats not what I am looking for. Thanks for reading.

Ok so i found a way using Auto Hotkey its a rather complicated script, but it does it pretty dang well. Only down side so far is you have to manually enter every item you want in the pop up. So if anyone else has a better idea im still all ears.

Found a even better way using Auto Hotkey and Jumplist Launcher together.

A:Folder on taskbar won't maximise

Hello, this has something to do with your dual screen setup, it sounds like the folder may be stuck off the viewable screen, so whatever you try to do, it is doing it but you cannot see it.
Make sure you are working strictly with the Laplink monitor only, so the tv must be physically disconnected from the laptop and in the screen resolution window, you have to ensure that no other screen is being detected and that your laptop screen is running at his native resolution, then restart the computer. If that did not help, then go into the directory where the folder actually exists, make a copy of it including all the files within, then delete the original.

It is possible but not as likely as a drivers issue. I would do some searching for the latest and best drivers (not from the disk that came with the card) and see if you can force load them for this card.

Hi guys, I've been working on this problem
For three days now to no avail. I bought a new graphics card thinking my old ati radeon 4670 was the problem ( now have geforce GTs 450) and then bought a new 2tb Seagate drive thinking I would just try a new install of windows 7 In case it was a driver/virus etc. issue( didn't want to lose my old partition in case it wasn't ) So now I'm here searching for possible solutions and haven't found any yet.

It's only on normal startup, safe mode doesn't give me any problems so I'm at a loss here, I think it may be either a psu or maybe bad memory. I ran a windows memory check and it had no problems any ideas would be fantastic!!

Here's a video I just took of startup so you can see what happens, it is hooked up to a 42inch tv via a dvi cable.

Thanks for the edit I couldn't get the img tag to work from my phone

Well, I just decided to send back my RADEON 9700 Pro from my earler thread and I'm gonna trade it for another one. I just have a quick question between some video cards. How far apart is a GeForce FX 5500 from a GeForce FX 5600? Also how far apart would those two video cards be from a RADEON 9700 Pro? I'm just asking this because I really don't know that much about video cards. Thanks.

I am about to install a new video card into my computer. It says I should uninstall the first video card drivers. If I do, will this make the screen go black, or what? I don't want to do something irreversible.

Thanks for helping a confused n00b like me.

No the operating system will load standard vga drivers, then you install the new card and load it's drivers

I have tried looking for this but haven't had any success in the forums.

I want to Pin my additional hard drive (Local Drive) to my taskbar in windows 8.1!

I would also like to Pin a particular folder to my taskbar too.

I can't find an answer for this. Is it Possible?

Thanks in advance.

On my Win 7 X64 system there used to be an icon on the taskbar which opened up the User's Folder. (The one pointed to by the desktop item just below Libraries at the top left.)

This has disappeared and I am at a loss as to how to get it back again.

A:User's Folder shortcut on taskbar

Open an explorer window and right click it and select pin to taskbar if not already pinned.
Right click> right click Windows explorer> in the target box, enter

%windir%\explorer.exe /root,%userprofile%
This will open the users folder when clicked.

Guys I question and (win7) Taskbar folder have a couple of questions I have win and for some reason when I open RELATED things and they're in the taskbar unlike in XP I CANNOT move the individual item icon around in Taskbar and folder question (win7) the taskbar the whole damn group follows I have it set to NEVER combine Second question I tend to keep three folders open at all times and they have shortcuts to all my programs in them HOWEVER I don't want Taskbar and folder question (win7) to see the NAVIGATION pane in those three folders but I DO want to see it in the windows folders that I open to look at stuff in windows explorer I have NOT chosen the APPLY to other folders Heeeeeeeelp Also I would like windows to always open these three folders on startup which is not a problem but I would like them to be opened in a certain order and windows won't do it EVEN if I renamed them to be in alphabetical order Any ideas Thanks George

A:Taskbar and folder question (win7)

Those are all normal things - you'll just have to learn to live with them, I'm afraid!

As for start-up order of those folders, I'm not sure if you can set a specific order to open them; hopefully someone else will have an idea!

I cannot for the life of me get the folder preview's to go away. They keep popping up on my taskbar when i have a lot of icons. I have tried the ExtendedUIHoverTime thing and that doesn't help. Any suggestions.

I'm not sure what you mean. The screenshot you have posted does not have any taskbar thumbnail previews in it. Take a look at the example screenshot in the tutorial below to see what a taskbar thumbnail preview is.

I have problems to pin program or folder to the windows taskbar. I have tried every methods mentioned above, but it just doesn't work for me. The option "pin to taskbar" by right-clicking a program doesn't exist for me, even when I run the program/folder, the only option it shows is "close windows". By dragging program/folder to the taskbar doesn't work either. Please help.

Additional information:
- The option Recent programs(both options) is on.
- The taskbar is unlocked
- Taskbar buttons is on Never combine

Thank you

Have a look at the tutorial at the link below and follow the instructions to see if it turns up anything.

But, now, i can not pin any folder to WindowsExplorer in Taskbar.
The other is ok,but WindowsExplorer only.

Please help me!

A:I can't pin any Folder to Windows Explorer in taskbar

Hello Foureye2004, and welcome to Seven Forums.

See if you can drag the folder to the taskbar until you see the Pin to Windows Explorer message under it, then drop it on the taskbar to have it pinned in the Windows Explorer icon on the taskbar.

Hope this helps,

Hi everybody, I have a small problem. I used to have a icon in my taskbar that opened a specific folder on my computer, when I clicked the icon the folder would open in a window next to the icon (I hope you understand what I mean).

The problem now is that I accidentally deleted the icon and when I try to pin the folder it opens in the same icon. Does anyone know how to get it back to the way it was?

Hi ... I'm trying to help a 75 year old friend of mine with his computer problems. Gateway computer running XP OS. The first problem is: We drag a shortcut icon (Google) from the desktop to the quick launch tool bar. But, after a shutdown and restart, the item is no longer on the QL tool bar. There is no problem with the three items we added previously, Outlook Express, Desktop, Notepad. We have tried various combinations of locked and unlocked tool bar settings. We have made sure that the icon is not "hidden" on the other side of the dividing bar.
The second problem: On every boot up an open folder appears on the screen. The folder is named  C:\windows , and it is empty. We have tried entering System Configuration (msconfig) and looking for it in the startup tab. It isn't there. We don't know where else to look.

A:Item leaving quick launch tool bar and mystery folder opening upon boot-up

The second of your little problems - have you tried just right clicking on this folder icon and then clicking delete in the contextual menu that appears ? I can't think of an answer to your first one off-hand, I have always used icons on the desktop itself.

Hey i am using a Ati Radeon 7000 64MB PCI

And i was wondering was it ok or a good idea to change some of the settings in the control panel / direct 3d options and open GL options or leave them at DEFAULT ?

ALso, is it ok to change the Refresh rate to sa 85HZ or 60HZ or leave it on default, which is: OPTIMAL?????

And my last question, does ATI Radeon 7000 support DirectX 9.C ?

I ask this because i notice when playing GTA III, like the first time you install , and when you run the game it checks your video card and see what is the best settings can be use when playing. Only thing, when going back into the DXDIAG thing , my DDI VERSION goes back to 7, when it was at 9 before running GTA III.

A:Quick Question about my VIDEO card, 3 questions

i personally use Open GL and max up the settings.. with ur card, id prolly use open gl and leave most of the settigns at default.. and instead.. change the visual settings ingame (go to video settings in GTA3)

as for refresh rate.. i use 60hz... as for if i put it up higher.. everything gets blurry.. n sometimes i can see lines/kinda like flashing.. yea.. odd.. i dono.. in this case for ME.. optimal would be 60hz... play around with the refresh rate on urs.. n see which one is best for ur eyes..

directx 9.0c.. im not sure.. google around =]

PS.. i just tried boosting my rate to 180HZ.. text and words n stuff arent as sharp compared to 60hz.. also my cursor speed doubled for some reason.. does neone kkno why??

Hi, I just bought a new video card, it's a Gigabyte nVidia 8400GS. I just put it in the PCI-E slot and was about to plug it in to the power supply but for some reason I can't find a power connector on the card. It's not a defect as the picture on the website is the same as the card.

There's only a little two-pin connector (like the one the fan is plugged in to) but no other ports, is it possible for it to get it's power from the PCI-E port or am I being stupid and missing something vital?

I can take a photo if needed but I'm pretty sure I'm just missing something

A:Solved: Really quick question - Video Card

What Model number is the card? I checked the 8400GS cards on the Gigabyte site and none of them seemed to have a power connector. So I would say that it indeed does draw its power from the PCIe Slot.

So a buddy bought a new GeForce 8400GS for a hackintosh machine he's building, only to discover it's so new there are no OSX drivers for it.

Meanwhile, we have one other PCI-e machine in the house, which is the kid's gaming machine (A64 on A8V-E motherboard), running an older GeForce 6600.

Can anyone suggest whether 6600 -> 8400 would be a step up for the game box? It's a much newer card, but it's also one of the cheapest ones available.

A:Quick question: compare video cards

For a real computer, the 8x00 cards will be faster.

For a Mac the 6600 since it has drivers.

Need Help…Quick Video Card Question

I have an HP 9040 desktop. For the last week or so I’ve been getting 0x116 and 0x124 stop messages. The fan on the video card died months ago and now I think the video card died as well.

My question: When I restart the computer, the fans run, the dvd drive flashes, the wifi lights up, but the hard drive led blinks only once and the computer makes no attempt to boot, and I get a “no signal” message from the monitor.

If the video card dies, the computer will not boot?

Thanks for any help
