Sharing with computer turned off/low power?

Q: Sharing with computer turned off/low power?

Just wondering, is there a way so that if for example, I have a video folder that is being shared on the network, to continue being shared, even if the computer is turned off? I want to be able to share my files 24/7 but I dont want to keep the computer running all the time. Is there a way to share while in a very low power state?

Preferred Solution: Sharing with computer turned off/low power?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Sharing with computer turned off/low power?

No, you'd have to wake the computer on a LAN event to bring it out of the low power state. Or you could purchase a Network Attached Storage appliance on your network.

Bought an USB fan to my som today but it does not work untill he turns the computer on.
Mine works even when my computer is off. Is this a feature in the psu or software related?

The mobo is MSI-7623.

K, I was playing SimCity 4 and my computer just turned off and then turned right back on. Is it the power supply or something else? I was watching TV and that had no problems, so it wasn't the power. It's a new computer with a ThermalTake power supply 420W, AMD64, Serial ATA HD.

A:Computer turned off in the middle of SimCity. Bad power supply?

Could be a heat related issue with your graphics card. If it gets too hot it might freeze or shut itself down and the PC. Make sure you are getting proper cooling, and things aren't too hot in your case.

I have been struggling with this serw.clicksor.w32 virus.  I have run Malwarebytes 2 times. Hitman Pro Several times, Rkill tdsskiller, Trend Micro Housecall and Kaspersky online virus canner.
My computer is on a home network.  I had downloaded the files to a computer on the network and accessed them via the network because every download I did on the infected computer was immediately deleted.
Well the virus has not disabled network discovery and file sharing.  The various programs have deleted a lot of infection from my computer but each time I attempt to enable fire sharing/network discovery and save the setting, the popup reappears and there is not network discovery or file sharing.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hello all I am not very knowledgeable when it comes to network security and so I ask for your help I have recently bought a new computer and made sure when connecting to my WiFi to connect to a public network and ensure that network discovery is turned off All the file sharing options are turned off as well Windows turned 10 discovery and on Network sharing The reason is I suspect someone in my home with physical or remote access to the computers which are connected to the same WiFi would use this to remotely connect to my computer They have done so Network discovery and sharing turned on Windows 10 in the past I also made sure my administration account is vivisble and password protected as well Today when I turned on my computer the WiFi connections that were normally available were not there and so I used the trouble shooter which seemed to reset my network adapters After this I noticed that network discovery was turned on It may have well been on before that but this is when I noticed it My question is could this have been the reason that network discovery turned on Is there any way by Windows update for example that network discovery could automatically turn on Please let me know I suspect that someone has already remotely connected to my pc Thanks very much

Neighbor's rig. After a teenager got it totally messed up I was called to have a look.

Windows 7 Home Premium x64. MSE and Malwarebytes found some 40+ threats which I cleaned. Rescans after last reboot clean. Got a cup of coffee as thank you, came home.

Later this evening a call, neighbor told that now media sharing is not working. Went to have a look, Action Center is disabled and can't be turned on, and when Windows Firewall is enabled you can't turn sharing on. Sharing OK when Firewall is turned off.

I have gone through all services, from security services to sharing. All services running as they should be.

Gone through everything mentioned in these:
Windows firewall blocking media streaming
Action Center is turned off

A:Windows Firewall blocking sharing, Action Center turned off

I'd look at the Malwarebytes and MSE logs to see what was involved. Serious infection can require specialized tools and methods known to our Security specialists to remove them.

Then check if damaged System files can be repaired using SFC /SCANNOW Command, or if not a Repair Install.

It is rare however that truly serious infection can be completely cleaned up. It may save time to get a Clean Install Windows 7 or Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7.

But I'd consult Jacee first to see what can be done for the specfic infection(s).

I have a Linksys router running NAT and DHCP. I have a desktop machine hardwired up to it. I have 2 laptops that use 802.11b. Up until very recently, I could print from the laptops to the printer attached to the desktop with no problems. However, that does not work anymore, and I cannot figure out why. I haven't changed anything that I know of.

The laptops can ping each other and browse each other, and the desktop can ping and browse the laptops, but the laptops cannot ping or browse the desktop anymore. I figured it was Windows Firewall that was the culprit, but I have it turned off on all 3 machines.

All 3 machines are using DHCP. This is a very basic setup, and like I said, had been working fine until recently.

I'm fixing my cousin's HP desktop. It was working before. But one day this happened after he turned off his pc and met his problem on the next day.

Now, whenever the pc is turned on, psu is on, cpu fan and case fan spin but they will stop spinning in a few seconds. Then only those two fans stop spinning while the psu fan is still spinning and the power button on the case is still lit. When I turn on the pc, no beeps come out and nothing shows up on the monitor. It just remains black after the cpu fan stops. And the pc doesn't restart automatically like when cpu is over-temperature.

If anyone knows what the problem, please let me know. Thanks a lot!

A:Power Supply Is On But CPU fan turned off

Has any cables been unseated?
Perhaps the PSU is at fault..if that is ok, then the Motherboard needs diagnosing.
If the lights come on, the PSU may still be at fault.. i.e not giving sufficient power for whatever reason.

you can turn your motherboard on manually by getting any slim metal and then touching both power pins with the slim metal, you touch one pin from the bottom and from the top something, but if you don't want to struggle you might need to solder

I need some help here,

I've had this problem before and was told that my RAM was bad so it was replaced and the problem was temporarily fixed. For some reason I don't think RAM was to blame. Recently, it has begun to act up again.

After turning on the system, my monitor shows nothing and immediately enters standby mode. The monitor fails to read any input from the system. I get nothing displayed on the screen. Not even the windows logo. My monitor, video card have and RAM have all been tested on other systems and show no signs of being bad.

Can this type of symptom be associated with a bad PSU or motherboard?

Any help or feedback would be much appreciated. This is really frustrating.

I've been dealing with the aggravation for over a year now of a network card that keeps turning itself off to save power. I have deselected this power saving feature in device manager; but, about two- to four times a month, someone comes to me to complain they cannot print.

Invariably, the computer the printer is attached to has no network access and restarting it fixes the problem. Also invariably, I will check the network card's properties and the 'turn off to save power' has been re-enabled on its own.

When shopping for network cards, this feature isn't listed in its specs so how can I find one that cannot be turned off?

A:Need network card that cannot be 'turned off to save power'.

I've never run into a computer or other network device that actually shut off while the computer was fully powered on. Something else is amiss, Alex. The adapter is not the problem.

Hello All,

In the last two weeks I have been experiencing something very strange with my Windows 10 Pro. When my laptop resumes from sleep the Wireless is turned off in Windows. I don't believe it was an update because I have defer updates enabled. Unfortunately, I just noticed System Restore was turned off.

1) I have checked the power settings in Device Manager and the device is NOT checked to use power management)
2) I have updated to the latest wireless driver available.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Edit: I believe this issue has something specifically to do with Sleep because when I reboot or shutdown/power-on the Wireless is enabled and working fine. It only seems to be when Windows goes into sleep mode.

A:Accidently turned off power while installing windows updates.

Hi MrAtiF and welcome to Vista Forums

The reason why you are having problems is because some updates overwrite and patch system files. When this happens, you need to take particular heed about the warning not to turn off your machine whilst the updates are configured/installed. Should power be removed, then some of these files will be incomplete and in an uncertain state.

Have a look at this Tutorial: Advanced Boot Options

Try Last Known Good Configuration (advanced). If that doesn't work, try these options in order:
System Restore - How to
Startup Repair
Repair Install For Vista

If none of these work, or you can't even access them, then you might need to do a clean installation:

My laptop is 1 year old and has worked great until a month ago. I was unable to connect to the internet and thru troubleshooting got a "missing network adapter". I have since upgraded the driver. I also purchased Registry cleaner program that supposedly found over 400 registry errors.

I found by accident that I was able to connect normally if I turned the PC off by holding the power button. Then restarting, I got a message to start windows normally. When I did, and then it connected to the internet normally.

Now, each night if I leave the power connected to the laptop and shut down windows from the Start command it works fine.

I do not want to have to leave the power connected. Can anyone help? Toshiba tech support is unable to help other that suggesting I return the PC to the "out of the box' status which is totally unacceptable to me.

A:Unable to connect to internet after laptop power is turned off

The "Registry Cleaner" you purchased is mostly likely a sales scam which has ruined your Win7. These are Public Enemy #1 of Win7 which will not tolerate the mindless tweaking they do.

If you want to clean your PC use CCleaner Disk and Registry tab which is a genius program recommended by everyone here, while no one here recommends any "Registry Cleaner."

You may still be able to System Restore to a point before you likely ruined Win7 with the scamware. I would try that now. We can then help you troubleshoot your wireless problem without the interference of having run the worst possible software you can run on Win7.

After assuring your wireless driver is updated in Device Manager, rightclick the wireless connection in System Tray to run the troubleshooter. What does it report?

You cannot expect to mess with Win7 the way you apparently do and not need to periodically restore it to factory condition, or even better let us help you achieve the superior Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7 sticking with the Best Practices tools and methods within to get and maintain a perfect install.

Wifi is completely fine without mac using it
No ethernet cables neither or plugs

A mac book pro is beating me up using all the internet

So, I have this amazing windows computer that has really great specs, and then the macbook does something that uses wifi, then all hell is broken loose on my ping. My download speed goes to a kb/s, same with upload. Everything that uses wifi freezes. Its all fine when the macbook is turned off, and my friend goes to do something else. Does your friend happens to have a BitTorrent client installed and if so usually one can limit the bandwidth such a client uses as from memory they tend to be set to use 100% of available bandwidth by default

In our office a co-worker accidentally unplugged their PC while they had several peer-to-peer shared files open from another computer primarily a shared Access database Since that time Power - File Problems Failure Sharing performance with those essential shared files for that computer has been significantly slower than before to the point where it is almost unusable The rest of the computers in the office seem uneffected and able to utilize those Power Failure - File Sharing Problems files as normal In Access for example it will open a database form with a smaller set of data but takes forever to open a larger one if at all compared to it operating fine previously with that same shared file before I re-installed Windows and the Office suite on that problematic machine but the problem persisted I then did a clean install hoping to wipe out any issues and start fresh but it is still the same and getting an error message when trying to copy large files some drivers and software to reinstall on the system to from the shared computer mid-effort quot Specific network name no longer available quot I was going to attempt to install a previously unused version of Windows XP Home Edition to see if that improved anything but it instructed me that I couldn t upgrade from Windows unless it was to the professional version I don t know if that will be beneficial or not There is also an office printer shared from this PC and though people in the office can still print to it the performance of the print jobs is also noticably much slower and sporatic I am not sure if these symptoms are hardware or operating system related Other than the file sharing issues the computer seems to be operating independently satisfactorily I m hoping to get this resolved before we decide to just scrap it and buy a new PC nbsp

A:Power Failure - File Sharing Problems

I wouldn't scrap the computer. It sounds like it's a network issue(since you reinstalled the OS and still didn't help). How is your P2P set up? Try to ping some of the other machines from the problem one and see what you come up with.

It could be a defective inverter or LCD panel. I would try a new inverter first

I recently got an update from Microsoft on Win 7, and immediately after it had finished updating I had no sound in any application (AIM, Skype, Chrome, Firefox, Youtube, etc.). This has happened before, and I ran Microsoft's Sound problems wizard and it always said that an option had been clicked off and that it had restored it. This time when I ran the wizard it says it detects no problems. I am sure it is the software, as it happens a lot with MS updates. Will downloading a new driver help? I can't go back to a previous configuration, I don't have one to go to. What should I Do? A computer without sound is like a bicycle without wheels.

Hello, all the bros here. I need some help on my CPU.

Firstly, my CPU has been working fine for the past 2 years. Recently, when i changed my resolution, my monitor would black out and hang there. But still i could hear the background music. After countering the same problem for 10 times, my CPU cannot be turn on. The fan is functioning but the LED lights above the button that turn on the CPU are not lighted.

I'm doubting its the monitor or the video card problem. So i test my monitor with another CPU, but it works fine. Therefore, i check out my video card. Its ATI Radeon 9600S. I unplug and plug it back. The red LED light is lighted but the green LED light doesn't.

So, is it the motherboard problem or the video card problem??

A:Help.. My computer cannot be turned on!

if your cpu isn't start then nothing will start
the video card is your problem
try to get other video card for test (old one or from friend) and see if it will work
also check that all the cables and connections are setup propperly

the C and D drives are there, but F, G and H have just disappeared. I'm so confused >.< What should I do? It's really late here so I can't call my computer guy now, so I'll have to wait till tomorrow.. but if anyone here could help, that would be awesome! thanks..

A:I just turned my computer on..

First of all head to:

using RegEdit and check things like "NoDrives" are set to 0. If it's set to 1 change it to 0 and reboot.

If you can type in the "My Computer" address bar F:\ and it takes you to your F drive then just create some shortcuts to it..

Hi guys,

I was wondering if there was any type of program that allows the computer to run in a minimal power state while leaving file sharing accessible so that I can transfer files without one computer using much power. I looked around and kinda doubt it, but I thought i'd try here first

A:Solved: Lowest Power State that allows file sharing?

The monitor can be off.

It may be OK to reduce power to the network adapter, but that does not always work satisfactorily.

Hi guys. While playing a video game (VVVVVV) on my desktop last night, it just up and shut off. No warning or anything. I immediately pressed the power button, and the fan spun for half a second before shutting off again. My motherboard has lights on it when plugged in, and those are all on. I took everything apart and painstakingly cleaned it, hoping maybe my computer just needed a dusting. I put everything back together; no dice. I've done nothing to my desktop of late. I have no idea why this happened. I checked around on some other forums, but their situations all sounded a bit different from mine.

Window 7, 64 bit
Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTS
Intel i5, 2.66 gigahertz quadcore
4gb DDR3 RAM
ASRock motherboard (sorry, I don't remember offhand the exact model)
750 GB Seagate hard drive

It was in the starting windows page and it said 60,000 files of 350,000 or something like that.. then after a while the monitor didn't show anything and moving my mouse/pressing keyboard did nothing so I simply turned off the computer guessing it was finished. Now it hangs on the Starting Windows page and after 5 minutes gets a BSOD -.-

System Restore could not complete successfully and says no files were changed... and startup repair can't fix it or something!

Try to reset the bios with jumpers or popping the battery for a minute, first to make sure it is not a BIOS glitch.
Check cleanliness of interior and clean up as needed.
Then try carefully reseating all cards and plugs.
Then check the fans are running. You can set a small fan to blow into the open side to boost cooling while you try a boot.
Then unplug all but boot drive.
Then start removing cards one at a time, except video.
Then memory sticks down to minimum trying each piece separtely in a boot.
Then swap out video card.

I turned my computer on today, and to my surprise my desktop has changed, it only has a few things on it now, just a few programs, also my downloads file is empty, my bookmarks are gone along with many other things (well they're not gone because I searched for a file I was working on and found it) and my Windows 7 UI now looks like Windows 98...

I opened up a file that I was working on and it gave me this 'Firefox can't find the file at /C:/Windows/system32/config/systemprofil… Folder/gallery.html.' even though the file is on my desktop.

I tried to system restore to a few days back and when my computer reloaded it looks the exact same.

Did you clear the CMOS on the new MOBO (motherboard)?

Test the CPU under stress
Test the RAM under stress
Test the Video under stress
Test the HDD under stress
Test the MOBO under stress

There is free software that you can run in the pre-windows before Windows load. MemTest was one you can test the Memory. Sounds like one of your components is not functioning. If the PSU is new right. If everything checks out you should blow out the OS wipe the HDD then install a fresh copy as sometimes what had worked prior might not work with the new hardware. It should work. I had a system where it run 24/7 installed a new PSU. I would come back after 12 hours and the all system would be shutdown. The issue was the new 550watt Green PSU. Gone faulty!

A:Computer turned off then back on again

Sorry, but I would have to think that you certainly do have a bad PSU, and I wouldn't run the machine. You need to examine the wall socket where the computer is connected and look for burns or scorch marks, and you also should check your surge suppressor or UPS for visible damage. Open the case and give the insides an inspection as well. If everything else appears OK, it's a power supply.

Why won't my computer stay turned off?

A:My computer won't stay turned off.

Can you be more specific? Are you saying that it turns itself on during the middle of the night or something?

Go into BIOS, you can enable or disable a time to turn your computer on or off automatically.

Hey everyone - This is my first post My computer no longer boots at all Yesterday I went out and bought a PNY GeForce video card to replace the GeForce FX that came with my computer My computer is a Dell Dimension model which I purchased in June When I put the new card in I received warning messages saying that the video card was not receiving sufficient power and also my computer was no longer able to detect a sound card It seems that turned nothing when on, beeps Computer does else I had forgotten to hook my new video card up to my power supply so I did that and it eliminated the error message With my new video card working I went to work trying to fix my sound problem When I tried to reinstall the sound drivers that came on the Dell CD I got another error message telling me to reboot my machine I rebooted but now my computer just makes or long beeps and then just sits there The disk drives don t make their usual spinning noise when I first turn on the main power before pressing the actual power button on the tower I m wondering if this is a power supply issue because the new video card said that it needed a W power supply but I m not sure exactly Computer beeps when turned on, does nothing else how many watts my power supply was I also read that Computer beeps when turned on, does nothing else if the computer Computer beeps when turned on, does nothing else is beeping then the motherboard should be OK I tried putting my old video card back in but the same beeping happens and my computer does nothing Does anyone have any ideas Thanks in advance for your replies -Tim nbsp

Hi, I recently built a new computer. It was working just fine for a week. Since yesterday, however, it freezes right after it's turned on. There is no error messages, no weird noises. All fans are spinning. I reset the CMOS. No changes.

The last thing that appears on the screen before it froze is processor make, speed and then DDR2 RAM 512.

Any kind of help will be deeply appreciated!

Hello! My name is Sam and I will be helping you. In order to see what's going on with your computer I will ask for you to post various logs from the tools that we will use to resolve your issue. Please also share with me any information about how your computer is reacting and behaving each step of the way as we work through this process. Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.alternate download link 1alternate download link 2Make sure you are connected to the Internet.Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application. When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings. When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:Update Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareLaunch Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareThen click Finish.MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install. On the Scanner tab:Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected. Then click on the Scan button. If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button. The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient. When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. We need to create an OTL ReportPlease download OTL from hereSave it to your desktop.Double click on the icon on your desktop.Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.Under the Custom Scan box paste this in

Click the "Quick Scan" button. The scan should take just a few minutes. Please copy and paste both logs back here in your next reply.

You might try a PSU tester (

Sounds like a bad PSU or something overheating, but if nothing is overclocked and I doubt it is since it is a new system lets start there.

I have recently been on holiday, I have not used my computer for around a month or a month and a half, before that my computer has been working fine. I have recently turned it on as I have some programs installed that I require, when I boot it up after a few seconds it will turn off automatically and I do not know what is causing the issue. The computer is Custom Built:

Seagate ST3500418AS 500GB Hard Drive SATAII 7200rpm 16MB Cache - OEM

Zotac 9800GT 1GB Synergy Edition DDR3 DVI VGA HDMI Out PhysX and Cuda ready PCI-E Graphics Card

Antec Basiq Power 500W PSU - 20+4pin 2x SATA 1x PCI-E 5x Molex

Brand: ECS
Model: GF8100VM-M5

AMD Phenom X4 9500

I dont think I hear any beeps

A:Computer Shuts down when turned on

Go into Bios and look into your voltage readings mainly the 12+ readings post here. I suspect an under powered psu with your quad core cpu and graphics card they might be taxing the psu, including any other devices you may have installed.

Also clean all fans, and heatsync with a can of compressed air, and check temp readings in bios?
Is your cpu overclocked?

Hi folks....

I have a Toshiba Qosmio F20, Media Centre, SP2, 1.73ghz with 512mb RAM. Today I noticed that the My Computer icon has changed to a low resolution version of itself.

(see above image)

I have tried changing it to something else, then back to default. Even though it looks 'high-res' on the icon setting page, it defaults to the 'low-res' version when the settings are applied.

Not the end of the word, but it aint half annoying!!

Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance!!

Hello BonnieQ7, Welcome to TSF.

Symptoms like this are usually attributed to malware/spyware infections; so, my suggestion is...go here...

Follow the steps, and post a HJT log in the HJT Forum ...the guys and girls there are excellent at 'cleaning' your system of these problems.
Once you get a 'clean bill of health' from them, and if the problem still persists, post back here and we'll take it from there.

Good Luck with it.

Kind Regards,

Sometimes it also happen when I am using it and it turn off just like when I click on Power button to switch it off.
I am just wishing that it doesn't happen while I am doing any important task.

When I see something like this, the first thing I suspect is the power supply. Do you know which power supply you have? I mean, the make and the model.

I'm a bit unsure as to why this would happen, but I had just finished watching a video on YouTube and when I closed by browser (Google Chrome), my computer simply turned off. No advance warning, no traditional shutdown. At first I thought I had had a power surge but when I noticed that the monitor and speakers were still on I knew that something was up. I don't think my PC has ever done something like this, and I really don't know what could cause this. My PC is big and spacious and is equipped with 3 fans. So I don't think that it's a heat related issue. Somewhat worried it could be a virus of sorts. Anyone know where to begin solving this problem?

A:Computer turned off randomly.

an incompatibility of some type is what probably caused the unexpected shut down. Is the computer still shutting down unexpectedly or was it just that one time?

A:How do I know if my computer turned itself on or if a person did?

You can check if the computer was turned on by looking at Windows's logs if i'm right.
If logs says it was turned on, then someone did turn it on.
Things can take the computer out of sleep, but i don't think it can take the computer out of hibernation <-- (To be verified, unsure about this part)

if you're afraid someone will touch your computer, you can crypt the whole system drive, and it will fix the problem, your brother will have to re install windows to use the computer if you don't turn it on for him.
It will also fix anything that could be used to remove the user's password and acces the computer.

You can log off Skype when you quit, if you're concerned about security, don't use auto login (will also fix one of your problems).

I apologise if this thread is in the wrong location but i honestly dont know what could be causing this problem specifically so i just put it freezes whenever turned on Computer in the Vista one Ages ago my computer was experiencing problems after using the computer for a few months whenever i turned it on the computer just froze and stopped working and nothing would happen when i did ctrl alt del or tried to open windows or the start menu etc It didnt hit a blue screen just froze and all i could do was hold down the power button and restart it only to have the same thing happen The computer is a Dell XPS and im not that clever with this stuff so im not sure how to tell you all my info about the computer but i dont think its a problem with a specific brand of hardware i Computer freezes whenever turned on am having because last time the error occurred i had my hard drives replaced by Dell to two completely different hard drives im using gig ish hard drives that are striped and the same error is occuring now i have noticed that the recent problems are only occurring as ive hit the half way mark of my disk space and i thought maybe thats because it was now trying to access the other hard disk but then i read up on Striped drives and found they used each drive equally so im stuck now P after having the hard drives replaced the computer worked fine until now where exactly the same error occurred but the most confusing thing this time is that im using this computer to send you this thread because its somehow working s its working i think because i booted the computer up in Safe Mode which works fine and uninstalled some random programs i dont think it was the programs themselves that were causing the problems but these programs being uninstalled caused the computer to go back from being more than half full in terms of hard drive space now i dont see why being more than half full would cause problems but thats the only conclusion i can draw from my computer suddenly and miraculously starting to work again Im mostly asking if anyone out there has a clue what on earth is going on and if they know what the solution is i have wondered about whether it was the whole Striped HD thing and considered reinstalling windows and making the two hard drives non striped but i dont know how to do this and dont even see why my HDs being striped would cause this problem Thanks xD

I was playing War of the roses earlier, and my pc decided to turn off for no reason. I thought, ok, I'll just turn it back on after dinner and continue playing. But when I pressed the on button, nothing happened. I tried a few more times and opened up my case. I unplugged the power cable then plugged it back in, and the CPU fan turned on for about a second, then went dead, and this happens everytime I unplug and replug. I'm pretty certain it's a PSU fault, but I just need someone to clarify this for me before I buy a new one. If it isn't a PSU problem then please tell me what else it could be and what I should do about it? By the way, I only built it a week ago, so my warranty is still valid, if that changes anything. Thanks in advance <3

Hi there,

Could someone please give me some ideas as to why, when I turn my computer on, the monitor doesn't boot up. Sometimes when I reboot the computer it comes on, sometimes it comes on straight away.
I have asked a couple of computer techs., different answers.
One said I probably had to buy a new ? card, I can't now remember the name of the thing (abt. $140). The other said it could have been the connectors to ram video card etc. inside tower.......
I don't have a regular technician, so would like some explanation of what my trouble is before I take the tower to anyone.
Don't want to be ripped off!
The machine is 4 years old.

Any help very much appreciated.

It could be something as simple as the graphics card coming a bit loose in it slot (assuming its not an integrated card).

Do you get a 'No Signal' message on the monitor when its turned on?

The first thing I would check would be all the connections. Make sure the cable from the PC to the Monitor is connected securely (remove and reconnect it to be sure).

Then open up the case and check all the cards / cables are connected securely in there as well, It isn't unheard of for cards to work loose over time.

Hi. I don't know if this has been asked before, but I searched for a while and didn't find anything,

Anyway, sometimes I want my computer to stay on overnight, but have the display turned off. I only do this once in a while, but it has become more frequent with uploading large files overnight. I have tried using programs like nircmd, and its "C:\Users\Harry\Desktop\nircmd.exe cmdwait 1000 monitor off" command in a shortcut. I have tried using Monitor Off, and a whole range of other programs. The thing is, every single program I try to use does not make the screen stay off. It always turns back on again, consistently. There is about a 10 minute period where the display is off, then it just turns itself back on. I would really appreciate some help with this as I have searched and searched to no avail.

Hello and welcome to Techspot.

Try another psu and see if that helps.

Check this psu wattage calculator HERE.

Make sure you get a decent psu. Antec/fortron/Enermax all make good quality psu`s.

If it doesn`t, theres a good chance you`ve got some major damage to the mobo etc.

My parents are having a problem with their HP desktop and I could really use some advice. They have a HP Pavilion A6500F and monitor model W1907. When you turn on the tower the monitor says no videos signal, then says monitor going to sleep. If i unplug the monitor cable from the tower the monitor stays on, but as soon as I connect it back to the tower it goes to sleep.  I can not figure out any way to get the computer to come on and the monitor to stay on. My parents are elderly and on a fixed income, so they don't really have money for a repair visit, I'm hoping this is something i can fix on my own with your advice. Thanks in advance for any help, it is GREATLY appreciated!

Hi all,

When I turn on my computer, it stays on for a couple seconds then shuts down, the monitor never activates so I cannot get into the BIOS. There are no beeps when I turn it on. The first time I booted it up since I put in the new processor, RAM and video card, there was a loud pop on the first boot, I have no idea where it emanated from.

I am having this same problem with the same computer build and have followed all steps. it's still shutting down after a minute or two.

A:Re: Computer turns off on its own after little time of being turned on

Please do not Hijack someone else's thread. I have moved you to your own thread. The OP in the original thread had a laptop and not a build, so what works for them will not work for you.
As for your problem, Shutting down is usually caused by Power Supply Unit failing or overheating. Open the case and blow out all fans with a can of compressed air. Take a look at the PSU label (Desktop not Laptop) and report the make, model and Wattage. If it continues to shut down, then replace the PSU

Hi, guys

My sister didn't listen to me or bothered to follow the directions on the screen that say don't turn off, and she turned off the HP laptop while vista sp1 was being installed. Now windows won't load. I tried running a system restore but that doesn't work. It goes through the process of restoring then says your system was not restored.

I also tried running repair from the vista upgrade disk the came with the computer but the repairs didn't work.

Is there anyway to fix windows without restoring the factory settings and loosing all the data? I can restore the computer to factory settings, but would lose the programs and files. Any way to restore windows and keep the files?

A:Computer turned off during vista SP1 update

I'd make her take it to a computer repair shop and pay to have it fixed. That will teach her. Can you unistall the SP1 in the Add/Remove Programs? Can you reinstall SP1 from a download of it?

I accidentally unplugged the powerstsrip from the wall while vacuuming. I plugged it back in and went to turn on the computer and now it won't turn back on. This happened once before, and in a few days, I was able to turn it back on. Not the case this time. Any suggestions? Thanks!

A:How Do I Speed Up The Start Up After The Computer Is Turned On?

The Microsoft System Configuration Utility (MSConfig) tells Windows what programs to start on boot up. But when Windows slows down, those programs are prime suspects. They eat up memory resources. Reducing the number of programs that launch when you start your computer is a good way to speed up your system (and possibly cure some problems). There are two startup areas that are easily accessible. First,? Click Start > Programs > Startup This will give you a list of programs that start when you turn on your PC.? Right click > Delete the programs that you do not want to start with Windows. This deletes the automatic startup ONLY. It does not delete the program. You?re not done yet. To see what is running when Windows boots, ? Click Start > Run. ? Enter msconfig and click OK. ? Select the Startup tab. Clear anything you don't think you need. (see note below)* Restart. After boot up, you'll get a message about the Systemconfiguration utility. Check the box to not show the message again.Windows 98 and ME include programs needed by Windows in MSConfig. So check before you clear anything. Windows XP does not include critical services in MSConfig.EDITED TO ADD: If you come across something listed in the startup list, and you'renot sure what it is, try checking for it here

I'm not sure how to explain this issue. It's relatively new.

When I turn on my computer, the colors would be over saturated at the login screen but a few seconds later, it'll be back to normal.

Does anyone know the cause of this or how to fix it if it's fixable?

I should add that I had uninstalled the display adapter and reinstalled it because I was trying to fix a different issue and on another forum, that was recommended. It's not a big issue for me since it lasts at most 2 seconds on the login screen but I rather my computer not have any issues at all...

A:Computer cuts off every time it's turned on

Hello and Welcome to TSF

You can try a repair install. It may solve your problems if the hard drive is not on its way out.
You may want to check the integrity of the drive before proceeding. Run the hard drives manufactures Diagnostic Utility.

If the drive comes back with now errors proceed with the Repair
Follow these instructions.

Configure your computer to start from the CD-ROM drive. Then insert your Windows XP Setup CD, and restart your computer.

1.When the Press any key to boot from CD message is displayed on your screen, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD.

2.Press ENTER when you see the message To setup Windows XP now, and then press ENTER displayed on the Welcome to Setup screen.

3.Do not choose the option to press R to use the Recovery Console.

4.In the Windows XP Licensing Agreement, press F8 to agree to the license agreement.

5.Make sure that your current installation of Windows XP is selected in the box, and then press R to repair Windows XP.

6.Follow the instructions on the screen to complete Setup.

If you have xp sp2 installed it needs to be incorporated into your xp disk or it will not offer the repair option only the clean install.

After using Skype the other night and turning off my computer that night (heard the turn off music from XP) when I turned the computer on the next day, I have no sound. The speakers work on a different computer, I have updated the driver and restarted and still nothing. I tried a system restore but cannot seem to restore, probably another issue, and I updated directx but not sure if it is the right one? I have no idea what sound card I have or what it even is lol. Everything says it is working but it is not. I even tried turning off norton when trying all. Any ideas??? Thanks
