Windows won't save password change

Q: Windows won't save password change

Hello fellow Windows 7ers,

I have just had this problem recently that has been very frustrating.

Preface this with: I had this OLD password that I had set. During this time I had that password I did use windows' system image utility to backup my old 500GB drive to restore it on a 1TB drive and I did that while I had this password.

Now, when I try to change the password it will not save the change. When I change it, I can logout and it will accept the NEW password, but once I reboot or shut down and it comes back up, it only accepts the OLD password.

Any ideas? Thanks

Preferred Solution: Windows won't save password change

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

It sounds like windows is corrupt you may want to try reinstalling it to fix the problem

Our Windows 7 users are prompted when their passwords will expire in 14 Days, however They are not forced to change thier password before it expires. If the users ignore the expiration warning they can only get logged into the network after having the helpdesk
reset thier password.
Is there a way to force Windows 7 users to change thier passwords on the day it expires. Our WinXP users get the 14 day warning and are forced to change thier passwords on day 14.
I have the GPO configured to notifiy users when thier passwords will expire in 14 days
Thank you,
Glen

A:Windows 7 Expired Password - Recvd Warning prompts but not forced to change password

Hi,

After applying above settings, the user can change the password by default at the expire day. Please create a new domain profile and test the issue on several Windows
7 machines. Can the user be enforced to change password at expire day? If not, please refer to the following steps to collect the information for research.

1. On the DC, open GPMC, right-click Group Policy Results, choose Group Policy Results Wizard, follow the wizard to collect a Group Policy result for problematic
Windows 7 client.

2. On the Windows 7 machine where GPO failed to apply, please perform the following steps to collect log files:

a) Please add the specified registry key to enable group policy log (%windir%\debug\usermode\gpsvc.log), and remove or rename it to disable group policy log after
collecting data. You may need to create the Diagnostics key if it is not there.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Diagnostics

Type: DWORD

Value: GPSvcDebugLevel

Data: 0x30002 (hexadecimal)

b) Then on the problematic Win7 machine, run command “gpupdate /force”.

c) Then on the problematic Win7 machine, run command “gpresult /v > gpr_win7.txt”, send me gpr_win7.txt file.

d) On the problematic Win7 machine, run command “eventvwr”, then expand to Applications and service logs -> Microsoft -> windows -> groupPolicy
-> Operational. Right-click on it and click “save event as”. Save the file as .evtx format and send it to me.
e) After that, please send me the above output files. (please zip them first and then send them to me).

- %windir%\debug\usermode\gpsvc.log
- gpr_win7.txt
- win7.evtx

Please use Windows Live SkyDrive (http://www.skydrive.live.com/) to upload the GPMC
result and the zip files, and then give us the download address.

Thanks,
Novak

Hello.

Well that all depends on "a password for what function." If you are referring to Internet Explore / IE, then you can click on Internet Options > Content > Personal Information > AutoComplete. AutoComplete is a nice feature to any browser, but it is too much of a risk these days.

Hope I was of some assistance.

Hi Experts

I have been through these two links below

MS Office Word : Set Default Save Location

Library - Set Save Folder

If I want to change a default saved location folder for any of those file's types : Excel, adobe , jpg, access, email attachment , ,,,,,etc

Do I need to repeat the procedure explained in the above two links for each individual file type ?

Thanks

A:Change the Default Save Folder for Windows 7 Something else

Hello Zillah,

You cannot change the default save location for file types.

The methods you linked to use a library to set a program to save to, then set the library's default save location usually works best though.

Hope this helps some,

First and foremost, I do not want to disable OneDrive; I just want to make it behave.

I have an external hard drive that I save all my data to; however, to save to it in Windows 8.1 is a virtual nightmare. As you can see from the clip, OneDrive is the default selection, with Computer and Add a Place supposedly available.

However, when I click on Ad a Place, I get:

Which isn't helpful at all.

What I would like to see as a choice is my external hard drive, but after searching diligently, I can find no way to make my external hard drive the default location.

Thanks in advance for any help given.

After installing Windows 7 Ultimate and XP Office Pro, I configured my earthlink pop3 mail account. Once I configure the account, it works fine sending & receiving, but when I close outlook the password is not saved even with the save password box checked. So, every time I close and open outlook I have to go and reinsert the password to the email account allong with the authentication password. Hey all,
Yes I know I should upgrade to a more recent Microsoft office, but why spend the money when most all of it works fine? The only thing that happens after we switched to Windows 10 Home, is that Outlook asks me for a password when I do a send and receive. Works fine after you enter it , but was wondering if there was a secret to getting around this nuisance, or is it only accomplished by a newer version?
I have went the Compatibility Mode and the Compatibility Troubleshooter route, but no change.
I have a new desktop computer with Windows 10 preinstalled that replaced our Windows XP desktop - won't work in that. Also, have a laptop that was upgraded from Windows 7 Prof. to Windows 10 Prof., won't work in that either.
Used to work fine in our previous Windows XP home desktop.
Any sure fixes out there?

This is NOT about hacking or overriding passwords

I have windows XP home edition.

A couple of days ago I changed my windows password and the system accepted the change but when I restarted the computer it kept saying pw was not valid even though I was sure it was the correct one.
I went through a few manoeuvres to get by that problem, removed the password and reset it. Again, the computer kept saying the pw was not valid. I tried to set several passwords, always with the same result.
My pw included lower and upper caps, numbers and special characters, I believe windows should accept those.

Finally I reset my old password, the one I used to have before trying to make the change, and with that one it's fine, it lets me in. So basically, my computer only lets me set up one particular password!

Anybody knows what the problem is?

Thank you for reading.

I also noticed at the change password screen, there was an option for "other credentials" which I hid using this article:

A:How to change network password in Windows 8.1?

If you are talking about the Wireless connection, but she kept the same SSID, it should be asking you for the new passphrase, when it fails.  If it doesn't, you can go to the Network Adapter, as stated in that tutorial and change it.  Otherwise you can uninstall the Wireless adapter, which will flush the Security key and all settings, then reinstall again, and you should be good to go.

It will number the adapter one number higher, but that does not matter.  You can also remove the key, by following this guide.  http://superuser.com/questions/148139/where-does-vista-windows-7-store-wireless-connection-information  Only thing kept in the registry, is the network connection info, not the keys anymore.  The keys in that file are encrypted, so it is not plaintext.

I have often encountered the advice to use strong passwords. I want to change the system password on my PC but I don't know the procedure for changing it. My PC is a Gateway E2500 and the operating system is Windows XP, Service Pack 3.

I've checked the manual, where the phrase "system password" does not appear. It doesn't appear in Microsoft Help or its Glossary, either.

I know what my present password is, so this isn't a forgotten password problem. I am not talking about a user password for a user account, but the system password for the whole operating system.

A:How do you change the system password in Windows XP?

the user (admin) account is the full operating system unless you are talking about the bio password. That is the one where when you turn on the computer it immediately asks for the password.

I have a Panasonic FZ1000 camera that is wi-fi capable. However, I'm having the worst time getting the PC and camera to pair, as have many others. One suggested workaround was to disable "Password protected sharing" in the control panel's Advanced Sharing Settings. However, windows won't let me do this because (to the best of my knowledge) I would first have to remove the password from my Guest user account. I have tried numerous times to do this, but unsuccessfully. Here's what's happening: I enter the Guest account using its proper pw. In the control panel, I get to the "remove your password" screen. Hello I'm having a particularly weird problem with User passwords in a domain environment I've recently changed the Domain password policy Windows Expires at change cannot logon Password and applied it Windows Password Expires cannot change at logon correctly while taking away the quot account policies password policy quot settings from the default domain policy either way this problem already existed before changing the policies During the change of Password policy we activated for everyone quot password never expires quot and are reactivating this checkbox OU by OU The problem User passwords are older than the max allowed time therefore users have to change passwords at logon screen Most users get the normal message quot Your password has expired please change it quot and when they click ok they are prompted to change it However on certain workstations the user only sees the quot ok quot button from picture one and when he clicks it it takes him back to the logon screen to connect with a user not to picture screen When this happens the only way to log into this account again is to go into AD and reset the password for the User If the Same user were to reset his password through ctrl alt delete he would have no problem changing the password Also if the same user tries changing it on another PC he gets the picture screen therefore i'm thinking there is a computer setting somewhere not allowing him to change on certain workstations

I have just installed a new PC running Windows 7 Professional for an existing user on our Windows 2003 domain. When she tries to change her domain password, she gets an "access denied" error message. I am able to change her password on the server, and the new
password works fine. I have added her to the local administrator group. But no success. As a test, I added a 2nd user from the same domain to the users on the PC. The 2nd user is able to login and successfully change her password. Not sure where
to go from here except to create a new account on the Domain for the 1st user. Any help would be appreciated.
This is a single forest, Windows 2003 domain, with no other trusts.
This is the 1st Wiondows 7 PC added to the domain. All other workstations are Windows XP.

Hello, I am having trouble with changing my password on my windows 8 laptop it keeps saying Server Unavailable Right Now Try Again Later it doesn't matter how many days I wait it still keeps saying the same thing.

Thank you.

First of all, SHRINK DOWN your fonts! They don't need to be huge!

Second, my guess is that you are logging in through your MS account -- and since I avoid that option like the plague, I can't help.

A:Unable to change wifi password in windows 7

Can't you just log into the router and reset the settings?

If you don't have the password, you can perform a "hard" reset using the reset button on the back of the router, normally you need to hold this button down for up to 30 seconds.

How can student can be denied to put any password to it's own (Limited Student's) account?

It is not possible to keep watch on students. So, is there any way to prevent this?

Please help

I am trying to change the password on my
computer - but get a message that says "the password you typed does
not meet the password policy requirements. Check the minimum length,
password complexity and password history requirements"

I have searched and found where these settings are managed in Windows
XP - it is under Control Panel > Administrative tools > Local security
policy > Security settings > Account Policies > Password Policy

The Password Policies are all set to the minimum (zeros and disabled)
- but still I get the error when I try and change the password. I have
even tried setting the password to something that will meet the
complexity, length and history requirements and still I get the error

I hardly even need a password for my puter. My online passwords are high security, long and complex. I really do not want to type those in every time I start. I do have a much simpler one that I've been using for the laptop.

I've even selected to start without a password, but it still asks for my Live pw. I've also tried cancelling my Live account, but haven't been able to so far. I would hate to give up my Outlook email account, and might have to if I cancel live.

But something has to give. If I can't get a few of these pains taken care of, I'm slamming it in the can and going back to 7.

A:HELP FIND WINDOWS ACCOUNT CODE TO CHANGE PASSWORD

where do i find that MS account code to satisfy MS, is it in her computer some where?
It's normally sent as a text to whatever cell phone number associated with the account.

Or a non-MS email address, if one was registered when creating the MS account. For example, mine can go to my AOL account if I want it to, say if the cellular service is down or I'm out of network range.

It will be a 4 digit code.

1. Get User password via Windows Password Hint
While you type a wrong password, the password hint will pop up below the password hint box. Based on password hint, you can think of origin password generally.
But the preconsideration is that you have set up password hint for user account password, when you are creating Windows system account and password. Besides, password hint had better can remind you and only you of forgotten password. The most important thing is that it couldn't like password, but has to be related to password.

As seen above, my password hint is email [email protected], and my Windows 8 login password is the same as the password of email. So when the password hint pops up, I could think of Windows login password instantly.
2. Get into computer with PIN code, and reset password for locked account
PIN code is a quick, convenient way to sign in to this PC by using a 4-digit code. If you have ever created one, this may be the simplest and most effective method for Windows 8 password reset. Totally two steps are needed.
Step 1: Sign in Windows 8 with PIN code
When you forgot your local account password in the login page, sign-in options is provided for you to choose. Click the Sign-in options, there are two options, Password and PIN. Choose PIN, and type in 4-digit code in the box. Then you can sign in to your computer successfully.

Step 2: Press Windows +X, and click on Command Prompt (Admin) and Yes.
Step 3: On the Command Prompt, type in:Net User <user name> <new password> and press Enter to reset a new password for Windows 8.

Command Prompt screen appears, input the words like the words in the red box, user name is iSunshare, new password is 12345, and then press Enter to complete the Windows password reset process.

Hope this of some assistance.

Unfortunately, I cannot go to recommending other tools, as first, these may not be allowed per BleepingComputer.com rules.

And secondly, we have no 100% sure way of knowing whom this computer belongs to, which is why many forums forbids the posting of 3rd party password recovery tools.

I hope that you understand the reasoning of this.

QUESTON 3...... I am seeing net pages that say she can upgrade to windows 8.1 For Free, is that for real from MS or junkware, cause this 8 program does not even have a start button, and is really
a lot of just distracting octupus options

It's legit, however you need to download all of the Windows 8.1 drivers first, save to Flash drive or external (or DVD), then upgrade & before running Windows Update, install the drivers, beginning with the chipset. It's best when downloading these drivers to create folders & name each to what the driver is for (e.g. Video), so there won't be confusion.

Note that many Dell owners are having issues with Windows 8.1 upgrades, Usually over a minor detail, but nevertheless, it happens often. Be sure to create a Full drive image & have the recovery media (the set of 3 to 5 DVD's that's supposed to be created when new). Or a Recovery Drive, which requires a 16GB Flash drive. There is the option to copy the recovery partition onto it for fast recovery, much faster than the DVD's.

Many of you may have used or heard about this trick By replacing Setch exe The Sticky Keys Executable in C Windows System with a renamed CMD exe Command Executable all one has to do to Change in Trick. Windows Miss Hit Setch.exe and 8/8.1 Password run an Elevated Command Prompt is hit the shift key a few times at the Windows Login Page From there it's a simple case of running Net User User Name Password to change a User's password Now there are ways to stop this from working The simplest is to set the system to disable Sticky Keys so that hitting shift does nothing thus blocking the load of the Setch exe The second and in the past not really practical or possible for most users is to setup the computer in a Domain so that a Domain Server handles the User Accounts and Passwords Given that very few people actually care about Sticky Keys and that only Pro Ultimate and Server level Windows distributions have really ever had Domain Access Capabilities it's been easy sailing as the Setch Setch.exe Trick. Password Change in Windows 8/8.1 Hit and Miss exe trick just worked I can report that it still works in Setch.exe Trick. Password Change in Windows 8/8.1 Hit and Miss Windows as ever though still stoppable via the aforementioned limitations but for one new hitch Domain Access is enabled on a low level the moment a Windows system is setup MS Account If the computer has only been configured with Local User Accounts then there is no change what so ever but with an MS account you will be given a Permissions Error if you try and change a password this way The short of this is simple If you're trying to be more secure then there is actually something to be gained from setting up Windows with a MS account The problem for most though is that if you forget your Password then you're more or less boned There is only one way I know of that can get access to a Windows system to at least recover a missing password in this case and that is to use a tool like Ophcrack That tool does work on Windows with MS accounts but just like with older versions of Windows a good long password will take a long time to crack if at all and may need large Multy Gigabyte Rainbow Tables to even have a chance of cracking The end of this is simply that all though one can still use the Setch exe trick to do many things Net User may nolonger be a viable option

I have Windows 7 PC, and a Server with Windows 2003 server, I can map a drive to that server, the ID and password on the server match the PC login ID and password, so, with the Network Drive mapped to the Windows 7 PC, I should be able to change the password on that network drive. However, when attempting to change the password, I plug in the required info, network resource IP address\login ID , then the old password and then the new password and confirm, this process does nothing, the password change request does not go to the server. The server is not part of a domain.
We have never had a problem with this process until Windows 7. The Authentication security on the server is NTLMv2. On the Windows 7 PC, I went into Control Panel > System and Security > Admin Tools > Local Security Policy, and on the LAN choice set it to accept NTLMv2 responses. Still nothing, any thoughts?

I there a way to change the location of the password box on the Windows 7 logon Screen.

I managed to remove the Picture Frame on the login screen using instruction found on this forum months ago, but now, I am an assassin's creed fan, and I have changed the background screen to the Assassin's Creed Logo and would like to move the "password input box" down so that It does not end up n the middle logo.

Thank you.

A:change location windows 7 password box on logon screen

There must be, but it either involves knowing a programmer/hacker that crafted a program for you, or doing some intense studying of Window's inner workings and twiddling knobs here and there, heh.

Could that information you used to change the picture be used to guide you in a somewhat correct direction regarding the window position? Beware things can probably be ruined horribly if you twiddle with knobs of unknown origin . . .

You are speaking about BIOS password which you set up in the BIOS?
As far as I know you cannot remove the BIOS password if you don?t know the old BIOS password.
In such case just the Toshiba ASP could help you? just the Toshiba ASP technician could remove the unknown BIOS password

I have an end user who is getting a Password Change notification balloon but she has already change her password a week ago. Do you know why it would remind her even though she has already change her password. We have it set for a 90 day period.

PC is running Win 7 Enterprise and is joined to the domain.

I've created a password for the guest account. Now I can neither change nor remove it.

Logging on as admin I can't find a setting to change or remove guest account's password.

Logging on as guest I am getting the "windows cannot change password" warning if I try to change or remove it.

On guest account using ctrl+alt+del>"change password", now I get a "access is denied" warning.

Any kind of help would be appreciated. Thanks.

PS: The whole issue has started with me seeing a warning on Bitdefender's Vulnerability module telling that the guest account has no password. I clicked on it and created a password for my guest account from within BD. That doesn't necessarily have to be related with the problem, just FYI.

A:Password Change / Remove Password Problem

uninstall bitdefender first, then reboot, next go to control panel, User Accounts and Family safety, User Accounts, select change your windows passwords and remove password from guest account and any other accounts you wish. Then reboot.

In WinXP, when you first enter a username and password for something, a window pops up asking if you want Windows to save the password. If you say no, this window never pops up again for that password. Well, I've changed my mind, and now I want it to save the password. How do I get this option back?

A:New WPA password will not save

I'm not sure if it's necessarily a wireless issue either, because when I try to connect to the internet through a wired connection it will not work either.Click to expand...

it maybe a firewall issue

Have you tried switching off the modem and router then switching on just the modem wait to settle , then the router - wait to settle - then the PCs

What firewall do you or have you ever had on the PC - HP normally come with Norton Security Suite which has a limited subscription time , norton has caused issues like this, even when un-installed from Add/Remove programs
can you disable all firewalls and re-try

lets try and get the PC working when connected by cable

go into safemode with networking and see if that works
Keep tapping F8 as the pc starts - should see a menu with safemode with networking
see if you can connect now

also try reseting tcp/ip

When I open a windows office file from the internet (Word or Powerpoint) and I then I go to save it via "save as", it automatically opens the temp file as the save destination, not the folder I most recently had open, or the folder where I've saved the previous 20 files I've downloaded.

A:Can I change where programs save data?

Most of the programs you have listed there would require specific Registry entries, so would need to be installed on each Operating system.

If you do want to install multiple Operating Systems, then partitioning will work just as well as adding a ne whard drive. Be sure to check the file structure you're using (FAT32/NTFS etc) as they are not always compatible if you want to vie wfiles from both linux and Windows.

As far as your games go, you could probably save your games on a common partition - but the option will be within the game itself, so every game will be different.

It appears that I can get the USB is first place and save changes but USB which is bootable is ignored and when I go back to look at the first start up drive it has changed itself back to original.

To clarify, I reboot the laptop and press F2, to make the USB the first place the OS looks for boot instructions.

Last time I also had this same version of chrome but the difference was that i got that version through updates starting from a lower version, so my all settings was saved. Now this new chrome is fresh and not offering to save passwords.

And at an ultimate bad moment, I deleted that lower version .deb package mistakenly '-.- Now all I have this new chrome.

Tick the box for "Prompt for name and password, certificates, etc". Next time you dial, the dialog box that opens will let you save the Username/Password for All Users.

Hello. Since I first got computer and was set up by cable guy for internet access I have not been able to save my password. I have checked all the boxes for this (I think) and yet i still have to log in every time. Not a big problem but annoying as I have to wait till the pass word box pops up. It has my log on name saved (?) but have to enter password every time. Have called cable company and they say its a software problem. Any suggestions. Thx

A:Can't save password for Outlook

The solution will most likely be found in either

Your Outlook Express Password Is Not Retained in Windows 2000 or XP at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;[LN];q264672 (you'll need to copy and paste this URL into IE's address bar since it will not display correctly due to the brackets within it)

or, if using Win98,

Cannot Save E-Mail Account Password in Outlook Express
