Upgrading my computer

Q: Upgrading my computer

I've had my eye on an GeForce GTX 660 2GB for quite some time.I have a standard Dell XPS 8500 right now and I'm planning on upgrading it sometime. Some concerns I have are if I will need modular power for this as well as if my computer will be able to handle this card? It currently has a 460W power supply, but some have told me I will need modular power in order to run this card. I am positive that it won't bottleneck considering I run an I7 processor right now. I could use another computer expert's opinion on if it would be able to work with this card! Thanks!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I'm not sure why you were told, you need a modular power supply. Modular is helpful in cable management for cosmetic purposes. Modular is nice but it is not a requirement. I currently have a MSI GTX 660 and my power supply is Corsair CX600V2 600W, which is not modular.

Looking at the specifications for Dell XPS 8500, I don't foresee an issue. The GTX 660 requires a 450W power supply, and your PSU supplies 460W.

By the way, were you the one I replied to on Newegg?

I am replacing my mobo, os (win7 pro 64bit), adding ram and a ssd. I want to put all of the programs on the ssd with the os.
How do I move all of Outlook with emails and the folders to the new ssd? I am hoping that all of the emails and folders and contacts will remain intact.

I should clarify that I will still be using the old HD for storage on the same computer.

Thread for a mate.

He has a

http://www.packardbell.co.uk/products/at-home/desktops/istart/istart-mc-2369/productsheet-PB49303801-802.html

and is trying to upgrade up to get a 8800 GTS. I'm not much of an expert myself, but him being on a tight budget, getting an 8800 gts would it mean upgrading his mobo? As far as i saw it said that mobo supported 16x pci, so i assumed he could run it on that board.

all the specs of the comp are in that link above. Any help would be appreciated.

Jamibi.

A:Upgrading Computer. Need help.

He should be able to run it but he might have to upgrade his power supply. I believe the 8800GTS requires a 400W or greater power supply with at least 26 amps on the +12V rail(s).

I couldn't find any power supply info on Packard Bell's site. Open the case and see if you can read the sticker on the side of the power supply. If you can't see it, it might be on the top of the power supply in which case you'll have to remove the PSU to read the sticker.

Hi Demon,
well definitely a GPU upgrade for gaming, however with that P-4, the biggest I would go is a gts 250, or a HD 4850. If you want DX 11 a HD 5670.

could you give more specific information about your system?
cpu-z is a good, free and easy tool to retrieve valuable information from your system
http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html

the cpu might be ok but would be good to know if it is a celeron, dual core, hyper threaded, etc
also, what brand and model motherboard is need in order to recommend you any ram upgrade and/or video card..
you should be able to pick up a decent video card for under $100. something like a nvidia gt 240 or better a gt 430.
you should upgrade to 2 gb of ram with decent performance or 4gb if the price is right.

Hi there, novice here.

If someone is thinking of upgrading an old computer, what things limit a computer? IE, i know computers have limits on how much ram they can handle, what limits a computer in what processor it can handle, memory disk etc.

Me and a friend are thinking of doing up an old computer as abit of fun, just wondering what we need to look out for?

Any insight helpful.

Thanks.

A:Upgrading my computer

On my gigabyte board with intel integrated graphics it auto disabled the integrated and detected my 6200. If it doesn't auto detect there should be a bios setting to set the display device to (pci/agp/intgrated/onboard/whatever), choose pci if you have the option.

ok I have an HP Pavilion desktop that I got last april for my 8th grade graduation. I want to upgrade the CPU but I don't know if the motherboard can handle it. How can I find out? Also, I want to upgrade my computer with more RAM. Right now I have 512MB of DDR RAM. The computer manual says its expandable to 1GB of RAM, can I go higher without damaging anything? My dad's IBM told him not to go higher than 256MB and he's running 384MB with no problems. Thanx in advance.

A:upgrading computer

What HP Pavilion do you own? With Brand Name systems its best to contact the manufacturer to see what will work when it comes to CPU's. Generally these systems don't provide as much upgradeability aas opposed to customed built systems.

As for the RAM, this is depenedent on the chipset - chipsets only support a certain amount. You can check at www.crucial.com to see what they say for RAM type and amount.

I am not a expert computer person. I need help. I decided to upgrade my computer instead of buying another one. I would like to start with the processor. If someone would be so kind and please tell me if I need to replace the motherboard also if i want to upgrade my processor.

My specs are:
AMD Anthlon XP 1600

Also, what processor would you recommend I upgrade to and if another motherboard is needed what would that be.

Thank you,

A:Upgrading my computer

If you go to the manufacturer's site for the motherboard it will have a list of all the supported processors, just find the fastest to maximise your systems performance.

If it is an older motherboard you may find the maximum increase in performance that you can achieve replacing the processor simply won't be worth the money.

There are a huge number of motherboards to choose from, what you need to decide first is what you are going to use the system for, if it is going to be for gaming then you will be looking for a fairly high performance mobo and CPU. You should carefully check that any new board will be compatible with your existing memory or you will also need to replace that. Likewise with the power supply. Then if you will be gaming you will also need a good graphics card.

If the PC will just be for general everyday use then you should find a package available from most good suppliers that will include a mobo, memory and CPU. Then you just need to check your power supply.

Things to watch out for. If you stick with the old power supply make sure the connectors are compatible with any new mobo. Another problem that can occur with a new mobo is the front panel connectors may need to be altered.

Any more questions, please ask. It will help if you can provide the make and model of your existing power supply and motherboard.

I am thinking of upgrading my Compaq (667 Celeron 512RAM) with another proc.

I want to have a PIII or PIV and over 1.gig hrtz

Does anyone havbe a guess on cost and how hard it will be to do?

Thanks

A:upgrading computer

First you need to make sure if that motherboard of yours will seat something like a 1ghz+ processor. That will make a world of difference in terms of difficulty and cost. It might cost as little as 120-150 dollars for that processor if you shop around, and only require you to pop out that old processor and heatsink. But, if the motherboard doesn't support your new processor, you'll have to buy another motherboard, which will cost you a good 100-150 plus the processor cost. Also, installing a motherboard is a big project if your sorta new, as I suspect you might be. I recently had a bad time with a motherboard (eeeh...we won't reflect on that). However, make sure you get decent cooling for that beast!

Hello Tech Guy community!

I have an eMachines W1050 Desktop in fully working condition with all the factory parts in it.
I want to spend no more than 500 dollars.

Is it possible to upgrade this computer with a new motherboard, video card, RAM, and CPU (or anything else) with this amount of money and be able to play most current games between mid-high detail running at at least 30 fps?

I would like this computer to end up with at least an i7 processor and a video card with at least 512mb of dedicated memory good enough to play, for example, Diablo III on max settings using a 1366x768 resolution setting, DDR3 RAM (any amount over 1GB) and a hard drive with a minimum of 250GB.

Thank you for your help!

Hey guys,

okay, so I have a Studio XPS 7100. And I would like to upgrade the graphics card (I do not know anything about computers). As far as I know, I would also need to upgrade my power supply. My questions:

What graphics card would I need?
What power supply would I need?
Would I need to upgrade anything else?
How do I know what parts will fit in my computer?

A:I need help upgrading my computer?

You would need to upgrade the power supply to support any of the current addon video cards.

That model uses a standard mid-tower case, so card size shouldn't be a factor for most cards. All you would need is a PCI-E slot on the motherboard and adequate power.

As for card selection, I'd recommend the fastest card that fits your budget.

A:upgrading computer

I requested this thread be moved to Hardware.

You can't connect 2 computers together for "double the power". It doesn't work that way. eMachines are very low-end computers with puny power supplies and minimal cooling. The only safe options would be memory and hard drive.

Hello Chips, could it be that the 580 is running out of Vram? What does it have 1.5gb?

Have you been able to monitor the CPU and GPU to see how much of what it's using? That should track down what you need to improve.

If it is running out of Vram then I would recommend a 4GB 670 or 680 depending on how much you want to spend.

I'm soon to be rebuilding my computer: New graphics card, mother board, case, PSU, RAM, almost everything. I've been worried that I may need to do a fresh install of windows 7 (worried since my copy was OEM and I don't even have a disc for it). The outgoing Intel CPUs/chipsets/motherboards are looking like the real bargain at the moment, if you don't mind the "dead" socket thing. You can build a kick *** machine for a very tempting price if you shop around, and it will perform everyday computing tasks faster than the AMD equivalent and at least equal it in gaming prowess.

Hi,

I currently have

Operating system : Microsoft windows XP professional (5.1, build 2600)
BIOS : Award Medallion v6.0
Processor : Intel Pentium III, ~800MHz
Memory : 256MB RAM
Video card : All-in-wonder 128 pro AGP (from ATI and its approx.total memory is 32 MB)
DirectX 9.0
Disk drive : QUANTUM FIREBALL AS20.5
Motherboard : I think its an ASUS mother board

Can I upgrade it to run games like Battlefield 2? I do not want to buy a new computer even though it is from 2001.., I've heard I can buy a new AMD 64 Sempron CPU to make it better and a new motherboard and a new video card and more RAM and maybe another hard drive I live in Montreal, Quebec, Canada and my budget is around 400$ :unch:

Try to explain something to me because I don't know THAT much about computers, believe it or not this is a 10 years old typing this message. :hotouch:

A:Upgrading an old computer!

I bet if you look around hard enough, want ads, your local (independent) computer store, ebay, you could find a P4 used with a decent video card
and still be able to grab a couple stix of ram with the budget you have.
Sometimes the P3 case will not support a P4 motherboard, so you would need a new case as well. Shop around, lots of people upgrade and sell nice comps all the time. Happy hunting!

A:Help in upgrading computer

I would say adding more ram and upgrading your vid card would make a pretty big difference. Especially more ram for the type of work you are doing.

Also if it has been a very long time without a reformat of your hard drive, you might notice a big difference in wiping your drive and re-installing Windows.

Hello everyone, I've become quite interested in upgrading my old box. Currently I have a Micro-Star mobo, dont know the model number offhand, but will be able to soon with some help. Anyway, I mainly want to upgrade my processor and video card. Currently I have a AMD Sempron(tm) 2500+, MMX, 3DNow, ~1.7GHz processor, and a RADEON 9250 gfx card (agp). I would like to know some quality options for a tight budget (100$ or less) if possible.
Cheers,

Well my computer right now doesnt let me play steam games for some reason and i need to upgrade some things so hopefully it will allow me to play them after i upgrade it.
The parts i have in my computer that i will be keeping are:
2 ATI Radeon 4870x2
1 150gb hdd
1 500gb hdd
Dvd drives
1100 watt Psu

So Im going to get the core i5 but im not sure what motherboard is compatible with it and supports crossfire. Also im not familiar with what kind and how much ram i should get. I believe thats all i need. I think ill just keep my current case but i will have to change my heatsink for the core i5 not sure which one is good. Please help

A:Upgrading my computer.

If you got the budget, I'd look more at an i7 class system to allow more upgrade options.

You have two 4870x2 cards... wow... Two 5870s would destroy them... But I'm guessing you're waiting for the 5850x2 cards to come put

You purchased a asus prebuilt computer with a A10 apu......it was not designed to be a serious gaming computer
Does it have a pic-e slot on the motherboard?
If so you could add a gaming video card....but then u would have to upgrade the power supply to power the new card!!
It has 8 gb's of ram so u are good there

My son is upgrading his computer, what is the best manner in which transfer the XP OS to his new hard drive?

A:Upgrading Computer

I'd say...clone the hard drive.

End product is a drive containing everything on old drive...that will be bootable when it replaces the old drive.

I would then take the old drive, delete everything on it...reformat it and use it for additional storage, backups, etc.

Although it would be nice...there is no way you can make/add in slots. What you have on your Motherboard is what you got.

WHat graphics card are you currently using?

A:Help concerning upgrading my computer

I'm sorry but none of your NewEgg links made it into your post. They have "..." in the cut/paste. Can you try editing/relinking or describing what the parts are?

It's also difficult to compare ATI and NVIDIA cards directly as they have different features and strengths/weaknesses. Putting these aside:
X800 XT ~ 6800 GT
X850 XT PE ~ 6800 Ultra

I do not believe NewEgg ships to Canada, but you may want to check. The only Canadian hardware source I know of is TigerDirect and they do not have nearly as good prices as NewEgg.

A:Upgrading my computer

Junk the computer.

Thats a waste of $160 (video card & RAM) for a computer that was built slow back in 2004~2005... so those parts would not be usable in a new computer.

$400 for this Compaq AMD would be better spent... too bad its not using the AMD chipset. You could build a better computer for about the same money... but since your nervous you just may want to upgrade the Compaq. You maybe able to sell your OLD PC for about $50 or so to go towards the upgrade/replacement.

There is nothing you can easily / worth-while reuse in a new built/parts.

If you built yourself (rough cost) similar to the Compaq (Windows7 costs the most):
$60 - AMD X2 CPU
$65 - Gigabyte AMD 740 board
$60 - 2GB DDR2 800Mhz ($80~90 for 4GB)
$60 - 450~500w (low-cost PSU - by my standards) or $70 for a 450w quality unit.
$60 - 500GB HD
$30 - DVD-RW drive
$40 - mouse & keyboard (far better quality than what comes with a desktop)
$50 - case (quality) - cheap stuff starts at $15... and looks cheap.
==========================
$425 Base parts
$110 Windows 7 Home OEM (OUCH - told ya)
---------------------------------------------
$535 Complete computer

$ 75 ATI 4670 video card PCIe

$610 Total

If you bought the Compaq and upgraded it to the custom build:
$400 + $135 (PSU and same 4670 video card) = $535.
*note: The desktop self-built system has more options and slightly faster CPU)

So thats the choices... look at how much MORE it would cost over just trying to upgrade the OLD computer. Which was about $210.... so for $325~400 extra, you'd get a much faster, modern computer... the HD is much faster, helps.

$210 = improved game graphics, but no upgrade path. CPU/PC will never go faster.
$535 = Upgraded Compaq... limited upgrade (CPU limited)
$610 = Clean hand-build... can easily upgrade to a X3 or X4 core CPU.

I am currently using a laptop running Vista which has 2 gigs of ram in it, and it runs pretty slowly, both due to ram issues and a processor issue.

For Christmas, I bought myself:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16883229017

and today I bought 2 of:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820141300

Which, when I get them into the box, will put me at 5 gigs of RAM, which is overkill I know, but the 2 gig sticks are just way too cheap and my ram at least will be future proofed.

Anyways, is there anything I need to know about the interaction of the ram and the Vista? It's the Home Premium version that comes with the PC.

Also, should I get the computer formatted and up and running, then install the 2 new sticks of ram, or just put them in there and boot with them the very first time?

Ya get a Geforce 7800GS AGP card. It is about the best you can do on AGP. Other than that you need to do a complete overhaul to goto PCI-Express video cards. I just made the jump but the 7800gs did very well on most games @ 1280X1024. It will need a little more power so I would make sure your Power supply can handle it.

My current computer is:

RAM: 8GB DDR2-800

I am looking to spend on GFX card however if you feel i should spend on other areas then please let me know.

I have been looking at this GFX card Sapphire HD 5970 OC 2GB GDDR5 Dual DVI PCI-E Graphics Card - Ebuyer. (sold out on ebuyer but i have found it here also: http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/-/667/874...archtype=genre )

Will that work with my current set up? Or would i need to upgrade other areas first?

Thanks in advance,

Hi cfitzarl,
welcome back, I only know of you from your great posts in the gallery I have a couple of suggestions for you, if you don't mind coming in under budget. the Gigabyte board is a solid well performing board. the DFI is a personal favorite of mine, its more of a high performance board at a good price. the DFI board also has 2 pcie 2.0 slots if you decide that you want to up your gaming....uh...game..lol.
the HD 4850 will give you good performance up to 1680x1050 resolution with most games on high settings. a notch up from that would be the HD 4870 for good performance at 1920x1080. and yes we have pcie v2.0 now. its not a huge deal yet as no card out to date saturates the bandwidth of pcie 1.0 yet....although Nvidia is coming out with a monster card (the GTX 300) that might challenge that. anyway i own a similar DFI board and 3 of the 4850's and they perform wonderfully. from what needs you described, this seems like it may be a good fit and pairing for your x2 6000, let me know what you think and if I can help.

Without upgrading the motherboard you won't be able to add the AMD FX6200 as the socket type is different (the FX6200 is AM3+ whereas your motherboard appears to LGA775), and that motherboard (Dell 0N826N) only supports up to 8GB DDR2 RAM.
You'd also have to find out the wattage of your PSU if you're looking at adding a GPU, from what I can find your machine only has a 250W PSU but I may have that wrong.

A:Help With Upgrading My Computer!!!!!

Hi and welcome to TSG.

That new set of kit should definately give you a performance increase over your current setup, however there are things that you must look at / consider.

1) Exactly what make and model power supply are you going to use? Your current one may not be up to the job.
2) That board only supports DDR2 RAM, it would be better to look for a DDR3 board for future proofing a bit more.
3) Its a MicroATX board, ensure your current case can support it.

A:Upgrading RAM on my computer

I am wondering what the CL 5 & 6 difference is, it may be meaningless or significant.  Try searching the net to clarify what it means, if it does not have any effect I would grab the Ebay ram.

I got nosy and did the search there is about a 2% difference in speed, IMO you would never notice such a slight difference!

I have an old Fujitsu Sylistic 5112 Tablet PC and am thinking about upgrading it to Win 8. It only has 4GB of ram (the max it takes). Should I go ahead and do a 64bit install or just 32bit.

the processor is: intel mobile core 2 duo u7700.

thanks,

I am in the process of updating to Windows XP, and everything went fine up until I was prompted to restart. Upon restarting, it's freezing on the Windows XP logo screen. It says Please Wait... and the cursor is the hour glass but it looks like there's no HD activity.

The computer I'm upgrading on is a Dell Dimension 8200, with a Pentium 4 processor. I found this support document at Microsoft's site that says that it could be a problem with the BIOS.

It's been frozen now for about an hour. I'm guessing it shouldn't be taking this long. So what steps should I take from here? Is it safe to just shut if off? Thank you.

Hello, I come to you with this problem that has been giving me grief for the past few days. I am attempting to upgrade the RAM on my computer from 256mB to 512 mB. Current there are two 128 sticks in there. If I add a 256 stick in a third slot, the pc will crash within two minutes. If I take out the 128's and leave just the 256 in, the pc works fine. The pc works fine with the two 128's by themselves. They are all SDRAM PC 133's. I have a Gateway with a Microstar MS-6330 K7T-Pro motherboard. (1.6 ghz). The max RAM capacity is 1.5 gb. 300W power supply (new) Any ideas?

You'll be wanting a major upgrade of CPU, RAM and Graphics if you want to meet the recommended specs for The Witcher.

2GB of RAM on any system seems to be the "sweet spot" for Vista AND XP - any more is just showing off really!!

I'd look at upgrading CPU to at least Athlon x2 5000, 512MB graphics card - at least geforce 8600GT or similar

The Witcher (great game!!) requires (at most and recommended by manufacturer) - Athlon x2 5600, 2GB RAM, 256MB GeForce 7900 GTX/Radeon 1950 Pro or better

So you have the RAM, you need to find out about what connection your mobo has for graphics (PCI-express is standard now), and the processor needs upgrading (although at lowest specs for game - what you have is theoretically fine but may struggle)

Download SIW from here - http://www.gtopala.com/siw-download.html - click siw with installer. Install that and run it - it will tell you exactly what is in your PC - motherboard type, memory type, etc, etc - I think you can generate a report with this tool - so post that on here and more help will be coming your way!!

Hi
i got this compaq presario, with an athlon thunderbird 1,4 gzh processor , 640 mb pc 133 ram, a 20 gb hdd ide 60, 250 watts psu and a nvidia vanta 8mb graphic card (agp 2x).
The chipset is via kt133, i read about that chipset and only support 4x agp and 64 mb on a video card.
I was searching and i found a geforce ti 4400 card, with all the specifications above, so i was planning to buy it, but then i found that its a directx8.1 card, Its worth trying to find a directx 9 card for this cpu?
i read that the geforce fx series sucks and the geforce ti were better cards. The only difference is the directx support.
Maybe i can find an ATI card? i need some help please
(dont tell me to buy another computer, i cant afford one and i got another decent cpu , i just want to play games using both of them)
Thanks

A:Help me upgrading graphics on my old computer

Th 1.4Ghz athlon is good, prrobably better than a low pentium 4. You will probably need a new PSU, and a 4/8X AGP card will run in 4X mode on your chipset. As long as it is a 7800GS or less lol.

I just recently upgraded to Windows 7 and now I would like to upgrade my computer.

I have a technical question about hardware:

Mobo that i want to buy is a Biostar T5XE CFX-SLI, I currently have a Asus A8n Sli-Deluxe. Would the new mobo fit in the same case that the Asus fits in? I do not know how to check and any information would be appreciated.

Also, any recommendations on a nice gaming mobo+cpu in the $200-250 range? I have a nice video card (Nvidia 8800GTX) and I would like a mobo with 2 pci express slots because I am also looking to get another video card. Such as any enticing christmas deals?

Thank you all for your time, and any input is appreciated.

A:Upgrading Computer Questions..

These two come to $350. You would need new DDR3 memory too, but it would be a good start for a gaming rig.

Newegg.com - GIGABYTE GA-P55M-UD4 LGA 1156 Intel P55 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard - Intel Motherboards

Newegg.com - Intel Core i5-750 Lynnfield 2.66GHz 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1156 95W Quad-Core Processor - Processors - Desktops

As far as size goes, you will need to find the form factor your current case will accept. This is a "micro ATX" board.

well there really isnt too much sense to upgraded something that old although is sounds like war hammer doesnt have very high requirements. you should run belarc advisor to get better idea of what your specs are but it looks like an old amd socket A mb with agp gfx and pc3200 ram. ususal for games you want a decent gfx card i dont see what you have now.
more than likely you will need everything new except you cdrom drive and new dvd burners are only like $25 so you are looking at probably case, psu, mb, ram, cpu, gfx card, sata hdd, dvd burner probably get something decent for around $700

Yes it will. just make sure they are purchased together and are in one package. Ram is finicky.

It wont "speed up" your computer but it will lessen the things that need to be sent to the really slow page file.

hey, i am thinking of upgrading the lego computer to the 500-1000Mhz. My friend can hook me up with a motherboard and chip for very cheap. works for a local computer store. However, will i need to change anything else around. The current ram is 32 mb in 4 slots and is shorter than the stuff in the new computer. The sound card goes in a black slot, which i dont see in a new computer, and the powersupply is 230-250w, cant trully read the last number. I have a few old games that require a 400mhz, and a 4mb vidcard, 32mb ram, etc.

Thank you so much for any input.
Mobo and processor will cost me $50-75, so i want to stay below 30 for the rest of the stuff.

Hello, I would like to reinstall Windows on my computer. I have XP and I want to upgrade to Vista, 7 or 8 but I have to put that off until I can purchase a new OS. In the meantime, I would like to get help with reinstalling XP because my PC has become slow over the years (since 2006) to log on and open up some of my applications. Also, several viruses and malware have came and left some damage to my system after I got rid of them (the folks at Bleeping Computer have guided me with getting rid off them so I have to thank them for their professional help).
So, my questions are
1. How can I reinstall Windows XP and
2. What information do I need to provide to determine if my PC is able to get an OS upgrade?

A:Reinstalling XP and upgrading my computer

Does the system boot into Windows right now?

Ok, my computer is really outdated & I'm going to give you guys some computer specs to see what I most need upgraded & how much should all of this cost to get better hardware!

Intel Celeron processor 600Mhz
64 MB SDRAM memory with up to 11MB allocated to video memory
Hard Drive 10.2 GB Ultra DMA hard drive
Sony Cd burner!

I've been thinking to upgrade the Memory to 256 SDRAM & upgrading the 600 Mhz to 2 ghz or something..

I can't really afford a new computer right now! Plus I'm 18 just graduated out of high school with no job YET! My parents won't upgrade, they said if I want to it will have to come out of my graduation money. Right now I have about $165.00. Would that be enough to upgrade the following two things?

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ My specs

Recently Ive decided to get a new video card, one that won't force me to think of suicide whenever getting a newly released game, this 7300LE sucks major time. I'm thinking of getting a 8800GTS (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...0038&ATT=14-130-038&CMP=OTC-pr1c3grabb3r#spec) but the problem is that I don't think my current 300w power can support it, so Im thinking of getting a new psu also, I was wondering if this(http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817104015) would work out with everything I have.

My friend is looking to upgrade his computer to Windows 7 soon, and I was wondering what kind of system specs he should be looking at to be able to upgrade and be able to use his computer to play at least a decent assortment of games. I ask because his system is somewhat old and I want an idea of where he has the hardware to support games on Win7 and where he needs to upgrade at first.

Here's what I think is true about his current hardware:

AMD 2600 (REALLY sketchy on this one)
2 GB RAM
NVidia 8600 video card

I can try to get more specific stats, but that's what I've been told so far.

The power supply won't fry your system like that, it only supplies the amount of power your computer needs. The wattage in PSUs mean the maximum amount of power they can deliver (in theory).
