Network icon in status bar showing not connected?

Q: Network icon in status bar showing not connected?

Hello again, seven forums

I have an annoying error

If you look at the picture below, you will see that my network icon shows that I am not connected, even though I am??

Does anyone know a way to stop this? It has been happening for a couple of days, over loads of reboots

Preferred Solution: Network icon in status bar showing not connected?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Did you recently change/update/install anything on the computer around the time this started happening?

Logged in this morning and certain network connected apps Xbox app, true key password manager, microsoft hello face recognition would not connect to the internet. I have internet access and have no problem browsing but settings shows I have no network connection. Tried other PCs connected to the same router and connection to the internet is shown in settings on all others.

It's the same if I use my wired ethernet or my wireless connection on this PC. I have uninstalled the adapters and reinstalled them.

Any ideas as to what can fix this problem?

This is a problem that started with the last windows update which included an update for my wireless network adapter which I have since rolled back My setup is as follows I have a dual band router The Ghz band's SSID is for example Testg and the Ghz band's SSID is Testg When I click on the network status icon and hover over the Testg connection it shows the SSID as Testg When I go into the Manage Wireless Networks and open the properties for this connection it shows the SSID as Testg I have fooled around with renaming the connections as all of a sudden one showed up as Test with the SSID of Testg Currently I have three connections listed in manage networks manage status different icon show icon Network and SSID networks Testg Testn and Test Testg and Testn Testg was previously Test renamed Testg and Testn previously named Testg renamed to Testn so I could rename Test both show the SSID being Testg The Test connection shows the SSID of Testg Network status icon and manage networks icon show different SSID Looking at this information by left clicking and hovering over the connections on the network status icon they show as follows Testg shows an SSID of Test Testn shows an SSID of Testg and Test shows an SSID of Testg Why is the SSID different for the same connection depending on where I look at it and is there a fix for this Thanks bruce

A:Network status icon and manage networks icon show different SSID

Well, due to other issues (thank you Cnet download for installing all kinds of malware on my computer with the program I was trying to get), I had to use a system restore to get rid of something that took over my computer and it also fixed this issue. I used a restore point from before the Windows update that I installed.

Hello!
I am running Windows 7 64bit on a Toshiba laptop.
As you see in the attached photo, the connections information icon shows "wireless connections are available" status even though I am connected! I am connected via hotspot (with a program called Connectify) to another laptop which has wired connection. I have no problems with the connection itself, but only with that status icon's wrong display.

This happend after I installed software for a bluetooth usb adapter. I have searched the web for the same problem and tried the suggested fixes: uninstalled the software, uninstalled the network adapters (wired and wireless), deleted iconchache.db file but none worked for me.
This problem is really driving me nuts so I would appreciate any suggestions on how to fix it!

Thanks!

So, this is not a major issue but kind of annoying. Recently I have noticed that the system tray icon for the wireless network always has that little red X and if I open the Network and Sharing Center it says "You are not currently connected to any networks." When I click "See Full Map" it shows a line from my PC to the Router but the line from my router to the internet has a red X.

The thing is, I am connected to the internet. I can go online just fine. Any ideas?

Hello Serg, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Sometimes a simple restart of the PC will sort the network icon for you.

If not, then a quick disable and enable of the wireless network usually will toggle it back with the correct icon.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Welcome to SF,

Check the browser's settings, remove or uncheck any proxy settings if found.

Any Security Software installed - McAfee, Norton or similar?

If you are using any 3rd party utility manager to wireless connect, disable the WLAN Auto Config for Vista/Win7 from Control Panel's Services. Click on Start and type services.msc press enter, locate WLAN Auto Config and Disable. Otherwise, the WLAN Auto Config needs to be Started if you're using Windows WZC.

If it's still an issue please provide an ipconfig /all of your computer.
Click on Start => in run or search box type cmd press enter (run as Admin). From the black screen, type the word ipconfig /all and press enter. Right click on the black screen or Command prompt then choose Select All and Paste the results here.

{run Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector} Download and install
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to copy the program across to the faulty PC

http://www.xirrus.com/library/wifitools.php
Direct link to the program is here http://www.xirrus.com/library/wifi_download_redirect.php
Then run and install the program
if you get an error - You need NET Framework installed for the WiFi Inspector to function.

Run the program

post a screen shot of the program running - if there are a lot of networks showing can you click on "networks" top lefthand area - so we can see all the network information, and also post which network "Adapter Name" (1st column) is yours on the list

To post a screen shot of the active window, hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file.
To upload it to the forum, open the full reply window and use the Manage Attachments button to upload it here.

That is what happens when it thinks that it isn't connected anymore but connections are available...click on the wireless icon and conenct to your network that is in the list (if it is there)...if not reastart the computer to be safe and see if it returns to normal

I am connected to a network and have internet access.

However, the network status icon has a red cross on it as if i am not connected. Even more strange is if i hover over the icon its read "Network Internet access"

I don't use any third party connection software and don't have any third party firewalls running.

I am plugged in direct to the router with an ethernet cable.

This isn't a massive problem but i'd prefer the icon not to have the red cross on it.

Hi and welcome toTSF If in fact you are connected but you see the "not connected" icon and
status you describe, you may have two wireless configuration utilities
running simultaneously, and you should disable one of them it may have been installed accidentally

has this problem only just occured? have you restarted your pc since it happened?

dont suppose youv tried disabling then reenabling the adapter? to do this go to network and sharing centre and click change adapter settings, then right click the relevant adapter and disable, repeat to reenable

do you have the latest drivers for your network card and wireless adapter?

have you tried a system restore to before the problem started?

Hi!

I seemed to have this problem for a long time. I am a little experienced with problems and programming, so if you could post pictures in the steps provided, it would make it easier for me!

The network icon displays a red X symbol and an ethernet cable symbol with a computer screen symbol in the background. I'm currently connected to a wireless network (on Windows 7 Home Premium x64), and the notification box shows that I'm connected to the network properly, but the icon itself shows that I'm disconnected. I have tried to fix this problem by uninstalling and re-installing some wireless adapter drivers (Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter, VirtualBox Service - I think that caused the problem, and Virtual WiFi Filter Driver), I tried to clear the icon cache in the registry, and I used the troubleshooter for the Network and Sharing Center.

I don't know what to do now. Help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Thats weird! Please tell me how to delete the unidentified network? I would also uninstall drivers if necessary, but there might be some other solution.

Are you using a static IP address?

In your TCP/IP settings can you make sure that your local area connection is obtaining an address automatically.

If that doesn't resolve your issue then can you please upload a full ipconfig screenshot (ipconfig /all) so we can look further into this.

Also, do any other machines on the network experience this symptom?

Many Thanks,
Josh

A:Network showing I'm not connected, but I am. Dial-up

I'm having the same problem. Dial up connection, everything works - data flows, but network icon shows I'm offline.

Problem started yesterday. I've got SP2 installed on Vista Home Premium 32-bit, installed SP2 just about 2 weeks ago and several updates few days ago. Most I suspect it's a mess caused by some update package.

I tried to restack TCP/IP, localservice does have administrator privileges, hiding/restarting/showing network icon. Four networking services mentioned in one tip are also up and running. Now the last thing I'll try is to reinstall eset smart security, but then, I'm out of ideas. Update: I noticed very same behaviour with dad's laptop, which started at about the same time. Now, I'm convinced this bug came with latest Windows Update.

I think I might have a virus of some kind. Any suggestions on how to fix this and what to do? I even tried to do a factory reset and when I hit f11 it goes to the recovery page but I don't see a restore option. I'm hoping someone can help. Keep in mind I don't have the installation CDs

A:Home network showing connected to internet but not able to get on

There are a multitude of reasons for not getting an Internet page, even though it may appear that your home network is working properly. Microsoft has an extensive help center. I suggest that you start here (assuming Windows 7): http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/cant-connect-internet#1TC=windows-7. Also, a bit late, but you may not have system restore enabled. From Microsoft: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/264887, Cheers.

Annoying little problem.
I have my desktop, laptop, printer and 3 Raspberry Pi's on a home network.
The laptop and the Pi's can all "see" each other on the network and in the network map but the desktop only sees the laptop,
Otherwise, all machines happily talk to each other, there are no connectivity problems.

A:Wireless network showing connected but not connecting

How did you install the bluetooth over the network or using a CD? If you could remove the driver and see if that fixes the problem. There could be a conflict with the driver and the NIC wireless driver. Best bet is to remove the NIC driver for the wirless device.. Reboot the laptop or desktop then re-install the NIC driver back or you could install the bluetooth device first then the NIC driver to see if that fixes the problem.

Or you could try to fix network protocols by flushing / purging the 3 caches.

click on start
click on run
type: cmd

type each below

nbtstat -r
netsh interface ip delete arpcache
ipconfig /flushdns

If you get an error on the last one then you have a DNS client service is not running error.

This can be fixed by typing this in the same area you had type the one above

REG ADD HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Dnscache /V Start /T REG_DWORD /F /D 2

Wait for the okay then reboot the system
Login back then click on run type: cmd
type: ipconfig /flushdns this should work..

My girlfriend is having an issue with her laptop, where the Network icon on the task bar has a red X over, however she is still connected to the internet. It prevents her from seeing her laptops battery, so there is always the chance it'll randomly shut down.

If anyone could help, it'd be great. We can provide more information as it is necessary, along with screenshots/specs as well if needed.

A:Red X On Network Icon On Task Bar, However Connected To Internet

Hello Xylisithe and welcome to Seven Forums.

It sounds like some of the Notification icons might be frozen for some reason.

Try this:
1. Click on the small white arrow pointing upwards to bring up the extra icons on the task bar
2. Click on customize...
3. If you have specific 'Behaviors' for icons that you want to keep then take note of them
4. Click on Restore default icon behaviors

If this doesn't help then click 'turn system icons on or off'
1. Turn all of the System icons off, then click OK
2. Then turn all of them back on and click OK

Basically what we want to accomplish here is to try and refresh the network icon and hopefully make the power icon appear as well.
Would you be able to upload a screen shot of this big red X that seems to be covering up both the Network and Power icon?

Hope this helps

I got a new IBM Lenovo about a month ago that was running Windows 8.1. Before doing anything I immediately upgraded it Windows 10. When I hover over the network icon it says "Not Connected-Connections Available." The thing about it is, is that I am connected to the network and the Internet. I did update the network card driver today. I thought that would solve the problem, but I'm at a loss. It wasn't really a big deal until I wanted to connect to twitter and the weather apps that pop up when you click the Windows button in the lower left corner. Any help is appreciated! Click submit

A:Network icon in system tray says I'm not connected, but I am.

Disable Windows from updating Device drivers, uninstall network device, reinstall after rebooting. Also unplug the Router/Gateway, wait about a minute and plug it back in and things should work.

The only other item that can cause this is third party network security software.

Lets try flushing DNS cache and renewing your IP.

Flush the DNS cache and restore MS's Hosts file ...
Copy and paste these lines in Note pad.

@Echo on
pushd\windows\system32\drivers\etc
attrib -h -s -r hosts
echo 127.0.0.1 localhost>HOSTS
attrib +r +h +s hosts
popd
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdns
netsh winsock reset all
netsh int ip reset all
shutdown -r -t 1
del %0

Save as flush.bat to your desktop. Right click on the flush.bat file to run it as Administrator.

Your computer will reboot itself.

I've tried everything to get it back. In my network connections, it only shows my local area connection. I can't connect to a wireless network, and my wifi light on my keyboard isn't even lit.
I don't have any switches or buttons on my keyboard either that would allow me to enable or disable wireless internet.
I do have a wireless card built into my computer, and I have been able to connect to wireless networks for the three years that I've owned this laptop. It basically just stopped working a few weeks ago.
By the way, it's Windows XP. Anyone have any idea how to get my Wifi back?

Try to disable and enable the WiFi adapter by going through 'Network and Sharing Center' .

Or have you restart your system? Usually there's only a delayed monitoring which it didn't show in realtime.

Hello,

whenever I'm connected to a network, the attached icon is displayed. The other icons (e.g. the spinning wheel thing when establishing a connection) do work, but the "connected" icon seems to have disappeared for no reason. I did not install any new software and I don't know what else might have triggered this, it was just that way when I booted my pc a few days ago.

Any help is appreciated, thanks.

A:Network connection icon always shows "not connected" even though I am

You might have a two adapters enabled. Right click on the bars and open the network and sharing center. Then in the left pane click on change adapter settings and see if there are 2 adapters present. If so disable the one that isn't wireless..I don't know if the two are related but mine used to look like this the left pic now it looks like the right pic. And it happened right after some windows updates.

I have two computers that I want to be on line, but on one, I get a message that I am not on line. The local area connection status says that I am connected the duration is clicking away. The speed is 100.0 Mbps. Packets are being sent. When I open Explorer, I have no connection. Before I had cable, both computers were on, so I thought it was a Comcast problem. They say I should be on with both computers. Is this an Explorer problem or a connection problem? This computer that I am on now is XP Pro. The one that I can't get on line is 2000 Pro. Thanks

A:Status connected, but no internet.

If you're using a switch instead of a router, it could be a problem. If you had that setup, though, you'd have only one computer with a connection. I would also check proxy settings in internet options under connections tab, then click lan settings.

I have a toolbar on my taskbar titled "Programs". It has about eight folders in it. I made another toolbar, and placed it directly adjacent to the Programs toolbar, to obscure the eight folders and force it to be a dropdown menu.

Trouble is, as soon as I lock my taskbar, right next to the arrow that displays the eight items of my Programs toolbar in menu-form, one of the eight items is showing up as an icon, as if the other toolbar isn't close enough to the Programs toolbar in order to completely obscure the eight items.

Here's what I mean in graphic form:

It's bugging me to no end. Anyone else had this problem/resolved it?

A:Toolbar on taskbar should only be showing an arrow but is showing icon

Hello thewonkits, and welcome to Seven Forums.

I notice this happens when using small icons for a toolbar. If you like, you could unlock the taskbar, right click on the dotted separator line to the left of the two top far left toolbars (one at a time) click on View and Large Icons, then lock the taskbar to see if that may look ok to you. It will make the top row a bit bigger though.

Hopefully someone may know a better way to hide that bit of icon poking out when locked.

Hi:
Windows 8.1
I just got HP desktop with Win 8.1 and started to learn all of those new features.

One thing about which I've concerned most is 'Status Bar' at the bottom of the screen.

Status Bar is very visible at the bottom of the screen, however there is not seen 'in progress' which both XP and Win 7 has. Then, I just need to wait to see 'done' at the left corner of the screen before doing anything, ... i.e. trying to read all way bottom of the screen by bring the mouse or click to save on 'favorite' at the top.

Is there anything I can see 'in progress' in the middle of the Status Bar at the bottom of the screen.

Thanks for your help in advace.

In Windows 7 64 Ultimate, the Task Status box in Task Scheduler is empty, even if I set it to "Last 7 days" and even though Tasks have run (I can look at individual Tasks and they show "Last Run" time as today.

I've also been having a problem where an instance of svchost.exe was using 25% of my CPU (Athlon II X4 630) and 170MB RAM. I tracked this down to the Schedule service although I haven't worked out what triggers it to happen yet. I have deleted some unneeded Tasks though, so perhaps that's fixed that problem.

All,

I've been using XP SP3 for the past few weeks and I've noticed that the text boxes for the icons I have in the status bar never appear properly.

As shown above, the text box seems to be behind the task bar. I've looked in the task bar options and the only option on there that seems remotely connected to this (Keep the task bar on top of other windows) is not the one. If that is un-checked then the Firefox window covers the taskbar.

Does anyone know what I can do to show the full text box?

A:Showing Status Bar Text Boxes in XP SP3

From what I've seen, you're stuck. It's a known Windows bug that's migrated version to version and still shows in Vista apparently. The only 'fixes' I've seen are temporary, but you can either log off then back on, not use the Win-D shortcut to minimize all windows, or uncheck the option to have the taskbar stay on top of all windows.

Hi there,

I am new to this but hopefully somebody out there can offer some pearls of wisdom? My Packard Bell laptop (I think it is called an "Easy note TJ71) model will not work. When I turn on the power a black screen telling me to "insert my Windows installation disc" choose my language and then click "repair your computer" appears.

I copied recovery discs and driver discs etc when I bought it (about a year ago) but no "Windows installation disc".

The system running on it is the Windows 7 one.

Is there anything to be done (other than trying to contact Windows for a copy of the install disc).

I am sure that I saw on one of these help sites that you can download a copy of said install disc but for the life of me I cannot find it now!!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

With searching I haven't found anything definitive on this. Does anyone know why the "Show icon in notification area when connected" option for VPN (PPTP) connections no longer exists in Vista? Is there a hack to get it back? The Network icon that can be enabled in Notification options is for the LAN connection. Through it you can connect/disconnect the VPN connection, but there's no independent VPN status icon anywhere that I've found.

Not having such an icon is more than an annoyance: you can very easily forget you're connected to the VPN.

its like bridging connections, since effectively with a VPN you are sharing connections with it, the only way i can think of is to enable it when you are using it and disable it when you are not, seems simple enough to me.

We didn't install anything new, and this "Intel Management and Security" icon (which you can't close) started appearing in the start menu on the bottom of the screen.  What made this start appearing, and how can we get rid of it?

A:Intel Management and Security Status Icon started ...

Its part of the "SOL 4.0" package for Intel AMT. You can in fact close it and make it disappear. Right click, press exit.To make it disappear next time you boot windows, click on the icon,  UNCHECK "Management and Security will be availabe next time i log onto windows". It will be gone then.  I do agree, it is relatively useless for people not using AMT. You can actually disable the entire AMT engine in the Bios (Go to Intel AMT, DISABLE). It does no good if it is not running in a network with provisioning server.

Win 7 Ultimate 64byteThe network icon in the tray is red with a red X.Network and Sharing center states I am currently not connected to any networks.I click on 'Connect to a Network', at the top of the pop up it says 'Not Connected', below the 'Connections Are Available' icon it shows my wireless network and connected.I can't connect to a HomeGroup.Internet connectivity is working.

A:Windows 7 states I'm not connected to any networks when in fact I am connected to my wireless network??

I found a solution for (my version of) this problem.  My tray icon never showed the red X, but if I clicked on the icon, the popup showed a bigger icon with a red X, and said "Not connected".  As in your case, Internet worked, but I'm unable to setup a VPN connection because it insists on using a non-existent modem, obviously because I'm "not connected" (which I am).

I monitored the processes running the NlaSvc and Netprofm services (using ProcMon), and noticed that both were denied read/write access to subkeys within the HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\NetworkList hierarchy.

The processes were running as NetworkService and LocalService, respectively, so I tried adding full access for these service accounts to the entire subkey mentioned above.  Notice that permissions are not automatically inherited in the registry, so you may need to explicitly "replace all child object permissions with inheritable permissions from this object".

Within seconds, Network and Sharing Center tells me I'm connected to my domain.  Yay!
A reboot was required to fix the tray icon and its popup.

However, I'm still unable to add my VPN connection.

I'm interested in hearing from you guys if your registries miss the same permissions?  If so, Windows 7 must have a bug somewhere with misaligned service permissions/rights.

I purchased this laptop for school and it was working perfectly fine. The network connection was great and everything. Today it decided not to connect to the internet, yet it is still connected to my network, but recognizes it as undefined. Instead of having the normal bars it has a yellow exlamation mark. I have contacted my ISP and my router is working fine. I'm on a different computer and it is working fine as well, so there's something wrong with my computer. I have contacted a representative and they said they could not help me either.

But surely someone here will be able to help hopefully.

I have tried everything I know to fix it. I cannot connect even if I'm using the ethernet cable.

The computer is an Acer laptop and I have Windows 7.

I just did a fresh install of XP pro. I went into Network Connections and setup a new connection - simple ethernet connection to my cable modem. Something strange is happening with it. When I unplug the ethernet cable from the computer, the Status still remains "Connected," and the duration continues to move. Shouldn't the Status change to something other than "Connected" when I remove the ethernet cable? (BTW, this machine has no wireless adaptor either).

What is even more strange: even when I boot up without the ethernet cable plugged in, the connection still shows Status: Connected and the duration moves.

Any insight will be appreciated.

A:XP says "Status: Connected" when nothing is actually connected

You do not need to setup a connection. As long as your Ethernet ports driver is installed and you have a modem/router connected to the internet, you just plug it in. You will have instant internet.
Go to Start/Run and type ncpa.cpl and press enter. In Network Connection, you should only have Local Area Connection, unless you have wireless or something else. If you have a connection you created, you can right click it and delete it. You will still have internet.

My wireless connection is showing as not connected when I put my mouse pointer over the icon in the task bar but if I click on it to open the connection window it shows as connected, which it is

This has only happened in the past few days. Any ideas on how to fix this would be appreciated ....

A:Wi-Fi not showing as connected!

Hello Ashg,

Have you tried updating or re-installing your wireless adapter's driver?

You can do this through the Device Manager.

I have a my book essential (western digital) and when I plug it in to the router (netgear N900) it never shows up. I had the same drive before, but the other was 1 tb this is 1.5 tb and is has the USB 2.0 and USB 3.0. I am running windows 8 pro, could this be it? The other one I had, which was the same, when I plugged into the router, it showed up as "readyshare". Now, there is nothing there. Any help would be great!

A:HDD not showing up when connected to router

I assume the N900 is a ReadyShare capable router.
I'm not sure how you do this in W8 without a Start Orb, but in W7 you connect the drive to the router, the USB light blinks, then you go Start > and in the search box type: \\readyshare and hit Enter and the drive should show up in My Computer.
