hey guys, i have recently been given a laptop, i removed vista and did a clean install of windows 7 ultimate. since then i have made a 30gb partition on the hard drive and have installed windows 8 as a dual boot. i would like to be able to use my music library from the music app within windows 8, is there any way to link the music to the partition so windows 8 can read it from windows 7? (i wasnt sure if this should be eight forums or seven, I have an account here so i decided here.)
thanksw in advance
I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.
I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)
If you use Windows Media Player in Windows 7, you can tell it to look for music in a certain location.
Organize-Manage Libraries-Music-Add, and then select the location where your music is.
Hey there, this might sound crazy. But as I was partitioning my micro sd card. I decided to remove the partition. And when I did that. It is now undetectable by my laptop or any laptop for thaf matter but I formatted the card on my phone, and it works for my phone. But not my laptop. I am trying to partition the sd card because I am using it to store files from my internal rooted phones memory to the sd card internals. I really need help badly! Is there any way you can help?
My bother had deleted my laptop partition files and folders when attempting to extend my C partition. All my stored partition movies were lost and could not be found in Recycle Bin. Do you know where these partition videos are? I really want to view these videos again. What can I do to rescue them? Thank you for any advice!
Sorry to hear you are experiencing such an issue.
Your data is stilll there somewhere as long as you don't overwrite it. If you save new data, it would rewrite your previous files.
I did some research for you and I found a threat that you might find helpful:
I really hope this works for you!
As you can see from the screenshot, somehow I have acquired a partition of unallocated space of approx 195 GB...I want to delete this partition, adding the extra GB to my main, OS:C partition, but I cannot figure out how to do it...Can someone help? Thanks a lot,
Steve in Kansas
It is already deleted, that is why you can't.
What you can do is grow your C partition into that space (forget whether it is called merge or grow or expand).
I'm trying to partition my hard drive, when I click shrink, it takes me to the shrinking window and it says:
Total size before shrink: 704749 MB
Size available to shrink: 7185 MB
Enter the amount of space to shrink: 7185 MB
Total size after shrink: 697564 MB
I don't understand how I have so much space, but I can only shrink it 7185. It is an NTFS.
Here's some screenshots
Some files that are read only are preventing you from shrinking beyond a certain point while those files are open.
My suggestion would be to use partitioning software that is bootable. Boot to the disk and shrink your partition without windows running.
There are several freeware apps available to select from. The one I use is Partition Wizard Boot CD.
After updating the Windows XP to Windows 7, my computer becomes really slow and recently often receives a low disk space message. And there is only 3GB of free space left on my system partition. So, I think it is the time to extend my system partition space. But, I am not so familiar about the partition expanding things and don?t know what to do. Do you have any idea for me? Please, give me some suggestions! Thanks!
Can you post a screenshot of Disk Management, so we can better understand what you are dealing with?
Hey guys, I am going on holiday in early June and am looking for a way to listen to music while I'm in the pool as I plan to spend a lot of time doing so.
The way I can see it is that I have two options:
Buy a waterproof case and waterproof headphones
buy a waterproof MP3 player all-in-one.
Obviously each option has it's flaws - otherwise I wouldn't be there.
Even if I buy a waterproof case how can I be sure that even though there is a waterproof case, where it contacts with waterproof earphones will be waterproof as 'waterproof' to some sellers just means rain-proof.
The problem with the all in ones like the Sony Waterproof Walkman is that they are very expensive for very little space, the 4GB alone being £50 and 8GB is £80.
Does anyone have experience in the matter, anything they can recommend, preferably I'd like to use my phone in a case for my 32GB MicroSD card, but whatever works I guess.
:big grin: My wife JUST purchase a waterproofed iPad Shuffle from waterfi.com
website is very descriptive and the device is AS Advertised - - she's very happy with it
When I play windows media player or any other mp3 player my pc begins to slow down a lot and mouse stutters and my internet webpage closes :/ any help please?
I've posted my IRQ
What are your system specs?
Some possible solutions: Make sure Windows is up to date. Try updating your sound driver (post your system specs and I will show you how to).
I have an external hard disk of Samsung 650GB which got damaged when I was transferring some files to my pc through it. Now when I connect to any PC or Laptop it shows the safely remove icon but there is no letter assigned to it and also doesn't show up in My Computer though it can be seen in Disk Management.
I tried Mini Tool Partition Wizard but when I create a new partition it stops at 90%. I tried wiping out the partition but to no avail.
Is there any solution for it??? Please help.
I would check the manufacturers site for a windows utility to low level format it. If you cannot find a utility to do that on manufacturer's site, then try this: http://hddguru.com/software/HDD-LLF-Low-Level-Format-Tool/ to wipe the drive. WARNING!! this will destroy all data on the selected hard drive!! be very careful when selecting a drive to wipe that you don't inadvertently select the wrong disk. After a low level format, unplug the drive, plug back in, windows should detect as a new, virgin, drive and it'll prompt you to format it. Format it and hopefully everything will be fine from here on out for you.
Post back, Hope this helps!!
I am running an old Windows XP.
All od a sudden.[ 2 days ago ] I click on Craigslist and I get a "Can not connect" window even though I can access any and all of other web sites.
Also, now when I try to upload a photo onto Facebook.....it says "choose file"..."click upload"...but its dead. Yet I can upload photos to other web sites.
Does anyone have an idea what the problem could be?

Hey guys, I've recently ordered a new PC and it should be here in a week. I'm a gamer and I like to write music and will finally be able to record with my new system. I'm just lacking a sound card. So basically I'm looking for a card that will be awesome for gaming and music. Any suggestions out there? I know I will need a PCI-E card. I'm looking to spend $150-200. Any help would be much appreciated
This is probably the best one out there: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16829132010
That is the best of both worlds. There is a better card for gaming, but the Essence above is much better for creating music and phenomenal for gaming.
Tonight I watched a movie, turned PC off, went to sleep, now when I woke up and turned the PC on, there was no D: parition where all my files are...Looked up at Event Viewer to see if anyone was using PC after me, and seems like nobody was on it. The last thing I installed was Parition Magic which now made me suspicios that it is the cause of this chaos. It failed to start because of some drive letters error 117. How the hell can it possibly wipe my D: partition without me knowing it?
Right-click "Computer" on desktop (or Start Menu) and select "Manage", then click on "Disk Management'. once the disk management service starts, you should be able to see the drive, and see if Partition Magic somehow changed your drive letter to one already in use or allotted to a thumb drive in the past (making it invisible in Windows explorer) or whatever. If so, you should then be able to change the drive letter to make it show up (by right-clicking the drive and selecting the option from the drop-down menu).
My laptop:HP Pavilion g-series, W7, 500HDD, 4GB RAM, i5.
Problem: the drives are like this>222gb, 108gb and 102gb.
My os is in the 222gb drive and I'm not comfortable using the drive with the os in it.a lot of space is wasted here.
I have tried to shrink it but it shows that only some 450mb can be shrinked.
how do it get back this lost space?
Provided you have some free space on that partition you should be able to shrink it. What software are you using? Perhaps you should give gParted a try. Boot off a gParted CD or USB and shrink it outside the OS. If you have some time, it probably wouldn't hurt to defragment the partition you are shrinking first.
I was installing new Windows 7. I didn't touch partition F:\ at all! But there was a problem in installing Windows, after everything got compleated Windows wasn't proceeding from its logo and was getting restarted after blinking a Blue Scereen!
then I installed windows through Bootable USB everything worked that wasn't by DVD but now!
I got check-up for partition F: ! It was showing that "Corrupted master file"
Windows wasn't doing anything after that it was just stuck there So I restarted it!
Now! When I try to open this partition it shows:
Also It wasn't boot-able!
I just want to fix this partition! I tried "GetDataBack for NTFS" it didn't work as all videos It recovered wasn't working

Honestly I'm kind of confused, but I'll try anyways... So you're 500GB HD is partitioned into 2 240GB partitions, correct? If this is the case the 1st one that is full is the partition where windows is located on, and is set to automatically save you're files to that partition. What you can do is move you're large files onto the D partition to make use of that space.
It can be a simple as copy/pasting you're files into that drive, or you can also set it to route anything saved to a certain file to the 2nd partition. For example, my "Downloads" folder automatically saves to my Data partition on my PC. Do do this simply go to whatever file it happens to be, right-click, properties, location, and from there click move and choose the 2nd partition. Hope this helps.
I bought a new 240GB Kingston SSD. Going to migrate my OS (Win 7 Pro) to it, but should I partition it first? I've Googled several opinions on this, and no one has been able to provide a consistent answer. 50% of the people say don't do it - doesn't make any difference on an SSD and the other 50% say go for it, keep your OS files separate from data files.
Any SSD experts out there or someone with experience have an opinion to offer?
I can't speak much on SSD's and their performance in relation to partitions, but I will say that having your OS on a separate partition from the rest of your data is pretty handy universally. I just ran into an issue where I had to reformat an HDD due to user error. Luckily I had my OS partition separate from the rest of my data. All I had to do was format that one partition, reinstall Windows 7, and be on my way like nothing ever happened. My data was still there safe and sound on 2 other partitions.
Win XP defragger is having a hard time defragging external USB 2TB drive because of the back up .iso image files on it. What do you think about the cause of this problem and possible solutions? Diskeeper?
I just realized the actual file type causing this issue is .mrimg , a back up image file created by Macrium Reflect. Some of the big .iso files I have seem to stress the defragger, but at least they're not completely crashing XP and the drive. I end up having to unplug the drive to get XP responding again, even to reboot. I'm pretty convinced it's the .mrinmg file. Not sure if I should create a separate partition just for them, or get a better defragger.
Good afternoon, I have one harddrive that used to be an external sata drive. It's a 250GB. My laptop crashed recently and I used this harddrive to get my laptop to work. I originally had two partitions one 14GB the other 230GB. The problem Im having is that when I try to shrink the second partition (250GB) it tells me that I can only shrink 5MB and I have about 90 GB free. Can anyone help me with this?
Thank you in advance!
I'd say it's a limitation of the Windows Disk Management Partitioning software. Grab a 3rd party partitioning program: Acronis Disk Director, or Gparted. what has to occur is data on the larger partition has to be moved toward the end of the drive. Then the extra space at the beginning of the larger partition can be allocated to the 14GB partition at the end. does that make sense? Hope this helps!
I have Windows XP SP that would not boot to the desktop on a Normal boot The system has SATA HDD amp SATA DVD-RW partition HDD XP -- Windows lost data problem on Red SATA ports on the Motherboard amp Black SATA port on the mother board I apologize but sadly I do NOT remember if the DVD drive or one of the HDD was in the Black SATA port I m not REALLY sure I Windows XP HDD partition problem -- data lost understand the difference but The system would boot up almost to the desktop so I was able to boot up in Safe Mode Once I could get to the desktop I looked at the System log in Event Viewer amp it showed that the controller was reporting drive errors on Hard Drive NOT the boot drive It was happening so much that it was virtually filling the Event Viewer amp making it Windows XP HDD partition problem -- data lost hard to see anything else in there amp kept the system from being able to boot to the desktop It never made it to where it said Windows was loading my personal settings I have never seen a NON-boot drive keep an XP system from being able to boot up Once I made it to where I could see the Event Viewer messages I shut the system down amp disconnected the quot bad quot drive amp restarted the system It then booted up fine but when I looked at the event Viewer is STILL showed Hard Drive errors I thought that it might be a bad cable so I shut the system down again amp connected the SATA cable that was connect to Hard Drive amp moved exchanged it with the one on Hard Drive amp booted the system I looked in the Event Viewer amp it was STILL showing Hard Drive errors so I opened quot Disk Management quot amp it thought the hard drive that I took out was still in the system At this point it was actually in another room Disk Management showed hard drive errors so I right clicked on the drive that wasn t even IN the system amp chose quot Delete Partition quot amp that made the drive errors stop Remember THAT hard drive was NOT in the system at the time I rebooted the system amp looked in Drive Management amp it reported quot Drive Missing quot When I looked in Event Viewer it STILL had Hard Drive errors NOW I suspect that this is REALLY a power issue amp NOT a hard drive or controller problem My power supply has leads Has SATA type amp IDE type type power connector Has SATA type Connectors Has IDE type amp Floppy type power connector I shut the system down again put the quot bad quot drive in the system disconnected all of the SATA cables amp power cables Plugged the HDD in the Red SATA ports left the DVD uplugged moved the power cables Of course I figured that since there where SATA power connectors on one lead it would be OK to plug in hard drives Keep in mind that this system has been running this way for years with showing this problem although now that I think about it the boot drive has failed times BUT they were all Seagate GB drives amp I have had those fail in several other systems FAR more often than the Hitatchi or Samsung However the WD drives have failed just as often as the Seagate Since I now suspected that this was a power problem I decided to plug in only of the HDD in the SATA power lead amp plugged the remaining HDD in the SATA power lead that the DVD was using amp I left the DVD disconnected I booted the system NOW my question Problem The drive that I took out of the system thinking it was bad now has NO partition When I deleted the partition on the HDD even though it was NOT in the system at the time that partitions are gone I have not done anything else to the drive since I found this problem so does ANYONE have ANY idea what I might be able to do to bring the partitions amp my TB of data back In UNIX there are format commands commands that can bring back files because they re not REALLY gone the allocation table is just not looking in the right place or something I realize this was a L-O-N-G amp Boring story but I had to go through the whole thing to explain the problem amp hopefully get a solution Thank you ... I have Toshiba Laptop it contains 320GB harddisk and there is not partition in it.. I can see only c drive. I want to make partition without formatting harddisk.. is there any way to achieve this target..
kindly help me experts...
You can using something like GParted. Download and burn the iso to a CD, then boot your laptop using it. Do backup important files before you partition your hard drive, just in case.
when i formatted my laptop using win7 DVD i have deleted all partitions and created a new ones but beside the 100 MB ,partition 1, there was 128 msr(reserved) partition appeared and the windows loader was not accepted even it worked on different laptops and pc's
what is the problem
Can you explain this a bit clearer?

Take a look at this:
Hello, so... the question is this:
Can I make a partition of my laptops' HDD work as an external drive.
So that when I connect a USB cable to my laptop, then connect the other end of the USB cable to another PC/laptop this other PC/laptop than thinks that an external HDD is connected to it...
I'm assuming I would need some sort of software to specify which partition I want to be recognized as the external HDD and then possibly specify which USB port to use...?
Or not necessarily a partition, just any specific folder would work as well...
So... help... please... So far I haven't found any answers googling.
Not clear on your problem;
When I connect a USB tumbdrive to my Laptop it shows up as a regular Mapped Drive.
In fact, when I take it elsewhere, that happens also.
It is not related to the HDD on the laptop at all (is that what you're after; making the USB actually mirror datafrom your HDD?)
Having dredged the internet, I came across this forum amongst the many with questions relating to cd drives working but dvd not etc, but my issue is slightly different, i think.
CDs seem to play ok, and so do DVDs, but I seem to have a problem with my laptop reading a disc with DS games on it that it used to read no problem. The discs can be used in my other half's laptop, so it is clearly a problem with my laptop.
I'd appreciate if anyone could advise where I can start to solve this problem
You need to have the CD/DVD drive replaced. Internal lasers fail in strange ways. The drives are not too expensive and they are easy to replace
So this is my problem:
I have a 500GB Maxtor Hard disk, and I went to install windows xp, but during the installation i saw that it was split into different partitions. I have no idea why but i deleted one of them. Now i think the entire hard disk is screwed up. When i connected it to my laptop using a SATA docking station, under disk management it gives me my C drive which is disk 0 and it gives me the Maxtor hard disk which is disk 1. But disk 1 is split into 100mb, 60Gb and 405.66 GB with the 405.66 being unallocated. What should i do to make it 1 500GB harddisk.
Assuming the disk does not contain an operating system, or any personal data you need, just remove the partitions, so the whole disk is unallocated, then create a simple partition the entire size of the disk e.g. 465GB in size.
As a part time DJ i spend a lot of time playing the same laptop a Recording music from music in the same order so i was thinking what if i Recording music from a laptop could just sit down and record the tracks that i play Recording music from a laptop directly into one Recording music from a laptop big MP and then it would save me having to load and cue each track I use a program called ClubDJ Pro its a twin deck system with a predefined playlist i can usually just load a playlist and tell it to cross fade during the last quot X quot seconds of the song X being a set time between and seconds However i find some songs have an extended silence at the end that can when i first played them mess up the auto cross fade facility and as anyone will tell you silence is deadly when your doing DJ ing So is there a program i can use to either record directly from my program or use another PC or laptop to record onto i assume i would use the earphone out on one to the Line In socket on the other PC Laptop and then record onto that It would be good as it then means i can use different mixes of my own nbsp
you might use WavePad Sound Editor to remove the trailing silence
My speakers are Logitech Surround Speaker Z506 and motherboard gigabyte z68x-ud5-b3.
I havent got a soundcard but I'm wondering why i cant use 5.1? and what sort of plugins/codecs i need for it? it used to work for my old machine using realtek HD and all 5 speakers work but for some reason my newer machine doesnt work, anyone can help or lead me to find a solution?
What media player are you using and does it support Dolby 5.1?
I'm considering buying a new SSD, because I could always use faster speed to boot up Windows and load programs and such. I'd like to keep my old OS partition intact but I'm not sure what kind of performance hit would I suffer from cloning my partition to SSD?
Is it worth getting an SSD in light of this or is it just better to start over fresh?
My Specs are:
Acer Aspire x3200 w/ AMD Phenom X3 (TripleCore) 8400 2.1 GHz (Stock speed & HS)
4 GB G∑Skill DDR2 800 PC2-6400
Onboard NVidia GeForce 8200/9200
Asus Xonar DX
WD 500GB (30 GB OS partition w/ 9 GBs free space)
Windows 7 Ultimate x64 Build 7600
What you are proposing should be fine but the partition you are cloning must be smaller than the capacity of the SSD, the increased speed of the SSD should be noticeable and you won't get a performance hit from cloning the drive.
Acronis True Image is excellent software to use for this and it can shrink the partition you are cloning to make it fit on the SSD, obviously with some limitations.
Looking for the best headphones for gaming and music... Noise canceling preferred so I can use them in a work environment also. Planning on spending no more than $100. Don't need a mic I can just use a separate one.
What do you guys think?
I'm considering using a few more dollars to get the Audio-Technica ATH-A700's, hmm what do you guys think.
Hi Had a power cut yesterday and when the PC rebooted Windows XP is not say Partition not seeing no: says recoverers partition Windows Windows XP yes, properly recognizing one of the partitions on one of the drives In Explorer it gives quot The disk in drive H is not formatted quot and in the Disc Management section of Computer Management it says the partition is active and healthy but gives no file system should be NTFS So I think Partition recoverers say yes, Windows XP says no: Windows not seeing partition the partition table Partition recoverers say yes, Windows XP says no: Windows not seeing partition got corrupted or similar I ve now tried both Testdisk and EaseUS and they both have no trouble identifying the partition the file system and the files the size and label etc etc etc So much so that neither give the option of recovery as it seems neither thinks there is anything to recover And yet Windows XP still refuses to see anything but an unformatted partition I m stuck in no mans land between the OS which is having a problem and Partition recoverers say yes, Windows XP says no: Windows not seeing partition the fixers which don t think there is Now what Thanks Nick nbsphttp://www.techspot.com/community/topics/partition-recoverers-say-yes-windows-xp-says-no-windows-not-seeing-partition.171083/

Hi, in a different thread archean recommended that I make sure that there is reasonable free space in the OS partition. How do I know what size it is and if I need to make it bigger? As you can see I know very little about computers.
My hard drive has 59.3 gigabytes free and 84.9 gigabytes used.
I think it's fine.
DMA is enabled...
The sound is synced to the voices, but the music seems to be playing slowly. Like in slow motion.
Have tried playing with several different audio players... VLC (VLC default codecs) and k-lite codecs as well...
I have two hard drives both from Seagate i have multiple partitions on both drives but just out of curiosity is one partition possible both drives together i mean only C:/ for both hardrives instead of two or more partitions.
Yes, it can. They can be configured into a RAID array or as JBOD although I'm no authority in this area. Either way you could have just one logical drive.

Hi again zillah
Sorry to hear you still have your problem.
I noticed one new thing from your old thread. You discovered it works when you're in Safe Mode? But not normal mode boot? See How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7. Don't remember if we mentioned this in the old thread.
p.s. Also, maybe a long shot, but also test to see if any difference by turning off real-time protection in your antivirus or other anitmalware products like spybot etc. as maybe some anti-malware product is trying to "protect" those registry changes
Okay, soo my computer's memory is full and I want to clean it out. I was wondering if it's possible to export my itunes library on a 1TB external hard drive, delete all the music off the computer than be able to sync my ipod while my hard drive is plugged in. Thanks
I have a Dell Inspiron 530 with vista and every time i try to play a song from my external hdd i get an error message that says "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Set associations control panel.
This is the normal instruction for setting up a file association.
1. Open Default Programs by clicking the Start button, typing "default programs" and then clicking Default Programs in the pop up list.
2. Click on Associate a file type or protocol with a program.
This opens a list of extensions.
3. Choose the extension of the files that you wish to open then click on change program button.

Hello with on on of Ran installed Windows space it out partition I need some help advice on a problem I am having with a new desktop I put together myself I m sure I have made some rookie mistakes along the way but this is why I did it for the learning process Anyhow a problem I have already encountered is when installing windows I partitioned a gb hard drive with one partition for the os with gb and two more partitions for storage Ran out of space on partition with Windows installed on it with the remainder of the unallocated memory Now the partition with my os is gb full and I know I am going to encounter problems I tried to shrink one of the storage partitions to leave gb of unallocated space to extend on the os partition but windows disk management tool does not allow you to do that Is my only option reinstalling windows onto one of these larger partitions and then formatting the old one I am fairly new to tech spot so If I am not using proper posting etiquette feel free to let me know Thank you any help would be appreciated nbsp
You can extend the partition that you have installed Windows into, but in my opinion it would be a better idea to use a program such as Easus Partition manager; at;
The free (Home) version is fine for a job like this.
An alternative I have used is at;
These programs work in a similar way, by showing the partitions as they exist now.
You click once on the one you need to resize (to highlight it), then right-click, choose 'resize', drag the end markers out to where you want the partition to be,
click 'apply'. That's it, it does all the rest, and can take a few minutes to complete.
Note that it is a very good idea to when making major changes like this, to make a system image onto an external hard drive, just as insurance. But this method has worked perfectly for me on several different makes of drive, (1TB Seagate, 4 partitons) and
Iomega 320GB (3 partitions).
Hi , I have only one partation and I fedup with some problems from the laptop so I really want to delete everything and start a new life
You must read my other thread because it will help you to understand something I want to say
or I can say I can't do anything till the welcome screen comes so I cant log in safe mode etc.
You need to go into the bios at startup and set the CD drive to 1st in the boot order, then insert your OS disc and reboot, follow the prompts to format and install.

I have an external Hitachi HD My system is recognizing the HD partition recognized-no External hardware but when I try to save to the drive this is the message Folder is not accessible the folder may be located in an unavailable location prtected with a password or the file name contains a or I went into Disk Management and saw there was no quot F quot Drive Partitioned which was at External HD recognized-no partition one time Went to My Computer pulled up the F Drive and there are no files So I formated the drive However I really don t think it formatted because Windows cannot see the file Please I need sound advice I need this hard drive for school coming up I do not know why this is not functional It was fine the last time I used it External HD recognized-no partition about months ago That was when I noticed something was wrong when the docs would not save to the F drive Didn t think anything of it I just saved to my C drive Now my C drive is almost full I need the the HD for Adobe CS Anyone please help me out Thanks Pam nbsp
As a first test on your external drive, does it have a 'power on' light, also when you plug it in to the USB socket on PC, put your hand flat on the case, can you tell if it's spinning up inside? ( I can hear my Seagate, 2 clicks then drive motor speeding up.)
Try a different USB socket on your PC if you have a choice. If you are using a tower PC, use the USB sockets on the back, rather than the front panel.
Assuming it is working, In 'Computer', does the drive appear on the top row to the right of 'C' ?
If you right click on it, and choose properties, does the pie chart show saved content on the disk? (ie, part pink/ part blue).
If you have a Flash memory stick, does that appear in 'Computer' when plugged in?
>>(all this is to prove if the drive is actually working)
If all the above is true, and drive seems to be working, can you go into 'Control Panel', 'Hardware and sound',' Device manager','Disc drives'
right-click and choose; 'Scan for hardware changes'. Click on the small white arrow left of 'Disc Drives'.
Can you see your Hitachi drive at the bottom of the list?
I currentley have 2 300gb HDs set up in a RAID0 configeration on my Dell XPS420 running Windows Vista 32bit. i would like to create 2 partitions, one for the OS and one for my Music and Videos.
does anyone have a step by step guide/tutorial on how i can do this?
not a good idea - - raid0 is fragile as-is.
The right sequence is
do the partitioning of the physical drive(s)
then initialize the raid-x on the appropriate partitions of your choice
format the remaining non-raid partitions
now load your data
On (3), make sure you use one partition per physical drive and don't allow the raid-x to be only one one HD - - kind of silly isn't it!
Okay, Complicated question.
I have one hard drive partitioned between
Windows XP Home edition And Ubuntu 10.10
The ubuntu is 5.29 GB's
The Windows XP is 148.08 GB's
I want to extend the Storage space on the ubuntu Partition without having to delete and reinstall Ubuntu.
Is this possible?
Thanks for the Help.
I usually use G Parted Live, it's always worked well for me.

Take a look here as may also be the issue with XP and your hard drive
I've just installed windows 7 onto my ide hard drive with my sata as a secondary. My sata used to be primary and was the only hard drive I had; now that I've restarted my computer my sata drive no longer shows an assigned letter but looks like it still has the data.
In Disk Management it shows that the sata has a healthy primary partition, but I am given no other options but to delete it. How am I supposed to get that data back?
Quick question, is there an easy way to read the block size of a drive in Windows 7? I'd imagine there is but a cursory look on google usually ended up as linux commands which do not apply to me.
With NTFS there is no means to set blocksize and the cluster size is adjusted automatically.
With Linux, yes, you set the blocksize and describe the partition in terms of count of blocks.
I've just reinstalled windows 7 onto another hard drive, and now I want my data from from my sata 1tb which was previously split to a partitioned for xp and the other for data. This sata is my secondary drive by the way.
Since the sata doesn't show up in my computer I checked it out in disk manager and the first half is unallocated which is okay, but there the second half is, healthy primary partition with no letter designated to it. The only option I have is to delete it. How do I get my stuff off it and not delete it?
Hive might have got corrupted. Was this partition created under Windows XP or prior Windows 7?
When I went to install XP it asked to pick the partition and my computer shut off and then after that it said root32dill missing. I finally got it to boot with the XP disk and it won't let me pick a partition it installs over the old one and my hard drive is still full but I can't access any of my old files. Can someone please help Dell want me to pay 100.00 to fix the problem yeh right.
Tell us more about the computer model and configuration.
There is software that will work, but not if your hard drive is full.
A few weeks ago a non-existant partition has been showing up under "hard disk drives" on my computer. I have 3 sata drives in my computer (plus a dvd drive), and none of formatted to have partitions. This extra partition that is showing up is named "Local Disk Q:"
In the properties menu, it says the drive is 0 bytes in size. I've tried to format it and all that, but it says I don't have sufficient permissions. The disk management tool doesn't show it at all. It isn't causing problems as far as I know, but it'd be nice to know what it is doing, and why.
I'm running Windows 7 pro.
Have you installed any tools to mount ISO files?
So, I have a Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard and Windows 7 and I've got some partition problems. The problems stemmed from when I went to install Ubuntu. My macbook, like so many others, has a defective superdrive that works about 3% of the time. I got like halfway through the installation and then it failed. So now I am left with a 15 GB partition that I made for Ubuntu (it is unformatted), a swap partition (unformatted), and another small partition (unformatted) that I do not know the reason for its existence. I guess that the partitions could be ExFS4 and that's why they aren't showing up, but I don't know.
Point of the story: How can I "delete" these partitions so I can merge them together and try the installation again. I've tried Paragon HD Pro, EASEUS something or another, and OSX Disk Utility.
Have you tried going to a Macintosh support site where they know a lot about that particular model?
I don't see how you can repair that one when it requires a software install, and your drive for installing doesn't work, so that replacement would be the order of the day, in my book.

I'm thinking that without gaming ambitions, the new Intel core i3 CPUs might meet your needs with their integrated graphics. These give pretty decent scores in
the Windows Experience Index, something like 4.9 for Areo, and 5.3 for business and gaming graphics. To the best of my knowledge, the matching H55/ H57 Intel chipset motherboards provide Fire Wire input.
You should first subscribe to Newegg's Email list, so you can grab your parts as they become available on sale.
Here is Intel's list of socket LGA1156 CPUs available at Newegg; http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...=2010340343 50001157 1051749233&name=LGA 1156
And the matching integrated graphics H55/ H57 boards in the Gigabyte brand; http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...01314 1070549182 107173338&name=Intel H55/H57 Be sure to pick one with 4 memory sockets. (4 out or 5 do). I have this one; http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128421
Please pay no attention to the bad reviews for this product, they were all written by imbeciles claiming, "high technical ability". I don't know squat about computers, and I had one of these systems up and running perfectly, with Windows 7 installed, in about 3 hours.
In fact, I'm hoping Newegg will offer "don't know squat" as a technical ability claim option. That way, I'll be able to check, "don't know squat", and report, "it works perfectly for me, 5 stars"!
Here is a test report done on a few of these boards at Techspot; http://www.techspot.com/review/259-intel-h55-motherboard-shootout/

Hello everyone A few days ago on my Lenovo IBM T laptop Partition/MBR? Corrupt with Windows installed as an OS most of the applications on my PC stopped responding With a PC So I shut the laptop down When I booted it back up I didn t get the Windows start up animation Instead I recieved a screen telling me that Windows had failed to Corrupt Partition/MBR? start So I went to the recovery console Once there I went to the System Restore option When I went to select an OS it wasn t there I also didn t have a recent back-up file on hand so I whipped out my Ultimate Boot Disc and ran a check-disk It did find some bad blocks and repaired them Although when I restarted my PC and went back to the System Restore option in the recovery console my OS was back I also had a couple of restore points available BUT they were from Windows still won t start up either I thought it was an MBR problem but now I think it s a partition problem Anyway I need to know the best implementation or program I can use to solve this problem Thank you all Roxxas P S When I start it up the file it says it s missing is the tcpip sys file nbsp
P.S. When I start it up, the file it says it's missing, is the tcpip.sys file.Click to expand...
Probably because it is missing....if you have a disk, try to use the recovery console (I think you can still do that on windows7).
Here's my issue:
I currently have Windows Vista Home x64 as my primary OS/partition. I installed Windows 7 Pro x64 on a separate partition. However, when I did so I did not allocate enough hard drive space for that partition. When attempting to shrink the Vista partition I am told that I can only shrink it by about 1/2 a gigabyte. What I'm ultimately trying to do (if possible) is completely remove that partition (I've already transferred all my files) and give all that space to the W7 partition. Currently I can't because the Vista partition is my primary and "active" drive. I've found online that some programs can do this, but so far they all seem to have a cost attached to them. Any ideas on how I can do this without dishing out any cash? Thanks in advance.
Have you looked at Partition Magic?
i have 2 drives, a caviar black 1tb and a hitachi deskstar 320gb....currently the OS is in the caviar black but i am thinking of moving it to the hitachi drive...is there any way i can exactly clone the system partition from the caviar black onto the hitachi drive without having to reinstall the OS or anything? and if there is a way, will all the installed programs work after doing that?
I'm not sure, but if it's within the same computer, it should work.
This is really a quick question, what would be the best and easiest way to do a straight copy/clone of a primary system partition from one hdd to another hdd. This new cloned drive needs to be bootable in the same system without the original drive.
The reason I need to be able to do this is I want to rebuild my RAID without losing my OS installation just duplicate it to a separate drive, boot from it and then do as I need, any one have any ideas? The easier the better.
i use this alot Free Acronis True Image WD Edition Software
Hi folks My Lenovo Athlon desktop came with Windows XP Home installed on a drive that has the EISA recovery partition Later I installed Vista Home Premium on two other HDDs I have in the desktop Now in order to do a clean install of bit Windows I need to clean boot the system from the Windows installation CD but my desktop won t boot from CD DVD RW drive I changed BIOS startup sequence to have the CD drive first follows from w/EISA Desktop Can't partition: boot missing CD, NTLDR by the primary HDD containing XP which is on the disk that has the EISA the CD light comes on at bootup and it starts spinning but then the light goes off and system shows the normal bootup OS selection screen showing all the OS s available to boot from and asking me select one Then I also tried removed the primary XP drive Desktop w/EISA partition: Can't boot from CD, NTLDR missing from the BIOS startup sequence so that the CD is the only drive there now upon bootup again the CD lights up and starts spinning as earlier but then I get quot NTLDR is missing press ctrl alt del to restart quot I have tried the Windows CD on another laptop and that booted fine and showed me the Windows install screen - so the CD is definitely bootable I have also verified all jumpers cables etc and they seem to be okay Would appreciate any help with this issue Is my CDDVD drive bad i e unbootable Or is the EISA partition the culprit nbsp
"then I get "NTLDR is missing, press ctrl+alt+del to restart"...
This message means that the computer is still "looking" for a boot hard drive, and not an optical drive. You should see "boot from a CD/DVD, press any key" message. The boot device selection is still incorrect. Make sure the bios detects the Optical Drive(s) correctly
My favorite music player is "Winamp Media Player"
1. Flash Music Player
2. sidebar music players
3. RealPlayer 10
What is your favorite music player?
i just use itunes, since most of the time I only want to have the music playing the bacground, i don't really care for the download options that it gives or the visualizer.
I have a strange experience with sounds lately I have no come background games of music sound How some different? idea why this happening or what is causing it but here it is How come some background music of games sound different? One day I was doing some light gaming on both my tower and laptop since both my computers meets the minimum requirements and while playing this game I heard some unusual sounds on both How come some background music of games sound different? my laptop and tower my laptop while playing the background music of the game seemed to be missing a couple or not few sound types in the game On my tower it sounded like it had an extra beat as if I could here that extra sound s with the background music playing I can t explain real good but to simplify this my laptop seemed to be lacking of some melody beats while my tower has it all and slightly deeper bass I turned my laptop speakers high yet no extra melody beat appeared I How come some background music of games sound different? did the same with the tower sounded the same as before but just louder I am sure I installed this game on both my computer successfully with no errors I reinstalled it again and same problem occurred I don t understand is the speakers more sensitive on the tower and giving it more variety of sounds or is the laptop speakers not so sensitive in outputting more variety of sounds Or both are wrong and it is just the matter of XP and VISTA or is it the software or drivers installed for the sounds Is something wrong with the speakers Do I need buy better ones Ones that s suppose to act normal nbsp
try updating your sound drivers first, then you might want to look into past problems others might have had with this games sound. Since this happened to both your computers at the same time it sounds like the problem is the game.
A simple test to see if your speakers are broke is just...play music on them. Does it sound fine? yes? then it's not your speakers
unfortunatly without knowing what game it is that you are talking about I can't really look into any problems others have had with it.
Ok i just bought two Western Digital Caviar Black WD6401AALS 640GB drives for a raid 0 array and i was wanting to copy my current windows 7 partition over to it once i get it set up. hello guys I have bought new tb harddrive i want to create three different partition from this drive for backup nd for movies rd for music I also have old drive gb which also have partitions c for xp e for windows i created partition before using gpart it worked fine for my olddrive But for new tb drive it gave me error basically it didn t create partition Windows detected the drive and it was fine now when i booted to xp it found new disk and it said it needs formatting i choose quick format it gave me error says it cannot be completed so i am doing full format now complete why isn it xp quick formatting the drive why windows didn t ask for it to be formatted What do i need to partition so i can acheive the result i want I have gpart live and paragon hard disk manager or is it best to create partiton with default xp or windows through disk management what is mark partition as active Guys help me with this nbsp
Check this article and seeif it helps to understand the partitions. Now that you have formatted the drive it is all one large active partition. You will need to delete out the old partition and repartition the drive to get what you want. I love gparted for this work. It is easy to understand and very stable. Since you do not intend to boot off of the drive you can set the partitions to logical.
I didnt realize it until i was getting messages saying my C drive was filled up; but apparently my hard drive has a C and an E file where the large amount of space is the E. So I have a few large files and programs on both, but i'd rather not have to do the whole reinstalling processes and whatnot...
So my question is, is it possible to have the E drive become a part of the C drive again, thus making plenty of room on my one, C Drive? It seems like it should be possible without having to format the whole thing... also, i am on windows XP
who wants to help!
What is the brand and model of your computer, or motherboard.
The E drive may be where the "hidden" restore of your Windows is located. Can you access E to see what is in it?
There are partition editors that will remove a partition then reformat that once used space and extend the existing partition to the rest of the available space. Acronis, and others you can find with a Gurgle search.
I have 3 partitions on my 160 GB HDD:
C: 25 GB for OS and system files
E: 40 GB for programs
F: 85 GB for games and media
I would like to reduce the partition size of C and E to about 15 GB each and reallocate the space saved to F.
I am using Windows XP 32 Bit. What is the best way of going about it?
EASUS Partition Manager (freeware)
ok. i purchased a western digital 320g hard drive and am attempting to install. my computer recognizes the drive but when i get to the partition screen, it has 2 unpartitioned spaces. 1 of those spaces has a 76mb capacity and 1 has a 131 mb capacity even though i am installing a 320g drive. the second issue is that it is showing a previous install of windows(i think) on my d: drive. i would like to totally wipe everything out and start new. i formatted the drive i installed onto the 131 mb unpartitioned space hoping it would recognize the 320g after it formatted but it didn't. it loaded windows onto the drive and now the windows screen where it loads just stays on and never goes to a desk top. i think i really screwed it up this time

One of my extra partitions disappeared and it is showing under windows disk management but with no driver letter, and with an error message when trying to assign a driver letter. Anyone know how to fix this?
When you go into the BIOS does the drive show up in there? What drive letter was it prior?
I am running XP/Win7 on my AMD 64 Athlon 3400+ powered Pavillion. I have an integrated Realtek AC'97 audio card and lately I've noticed that all music playback is choppy - whether it's iTunes, Windows Media Player, or Youtube. I've tried different speakers, headphones, etc., but reagrdless of the hardware I use, I still get the same problem. It sounds as if the music is being paused and then played very quickly throughout the song. I don't really notice it in Windows sound effects, but that may be because they are short in length. I notice this happening on both XP and Windows 7 and don't know why.
Try updating your audio and chipset driver. There could also be a program running in the background taking up to much memory or CPU cycles. If you listen to music alot you should get a dedicated sound card. You can get a really good Audigy on Ebay for under $15. Onboard audio is notoriously troublesome. Too many other things in the system can interfere with it.
i have a new toshiba l305 laptop that am unable to partition. it runs on windows vista. i have freed the hdd up to 74 gb of 120 gb. also i have used paragon partition utility that reports cross linked files. the vista shrink utility does not even function it displays 0 in the shrinked space.
You could try Gparted.
Hi..I have a 300 gb HD and im wondering if theres a way to make about half the space on it for me to save stuff on so it wont erase when i restore my OS.. I sometimes just do a clean install of XP or Vista ect and it deletes all my files (i know thats the point) but im wondering if i can make a large part of my HD to just saves like games pics etc on so that when i do a clean install those files wont be messed with..Im pretty sure thats what partions are for but not really sure? Can someone tell me how i would make a partion that would be around 100gb just for my extra files and the rest of the space for the OS. Sorry if this is confusing..not really sure how to put what i mean into words. Thanks
Not confusing at all and this is something that can be done within Windows! It can also be done with a 3rd party disk partitioning program such as Acronis Disk Director. Anyhow, Microsoft incorporated this feature into Windows for exactly the reason you stated. You divide your hard into partitions and put your Windows system on one and your files on the other(s) This way, it isolates and protects your files from a Windows system corruption.
Repost if you want to use the Windows built-in partitioning feature (more manual and difficult) or buy Acronis Disk Director which costs money but is easier.
Hello to all I built a computer specifically to operate my modest home studio years ago It smoked at that time with Win K Gig music build computer Multi-channel of RAM and LVD SCSI RPM drives It cost a bundle to build and has lasted me until the lightning hit it a few weeks ago Also blasted was my Echo Layla audio interface and my Cubase USB dongle Data was fortunately backed up I wish to build a new box from the ground up The insurance company paid me for the fried machine I wish to spend this money building another box that will last Multi-channel music computer build me for a long while as well Throughput is key of course as is graphics speed bit architecture and boatloads of RAM I have a NewEgg order all set to place Here tis -- ww eddiecurrents com ComputerBuild order jpg -- the system would not let me post a link I am ready to press the quot place order quot button I THINK I can do away with LVD SCSI as I believe that SATA II drives even RPM ones will do what I need I very seldom exceed - tracks at a time and if I have the math right SATA II should do but I am having troubles locating data on actual throughput I administer a huge database among many other things The data is pounded daily by hundreds of live connections as well as over the internet I am very familiar with throughput but find that it s not much of a consideration for MOST people gamers power Multi-channel music computer build users graphics and video designers I really want to spend the money ONE time here and am sure there are some great ideas out there on how I can improve or even cut corners Cubase comes with both the and bit versions Soundforge and Acid also should run fine on bit Vista Windows Ultimate when available Gotcha s like sound interface software though can be a headache What other systems are out there I will never buy quot off the rack quot so who s built a mohuncher of a music editing system I was just told I don t need an I and who needs or Gigs of RAM Me that s who I have used RAM disks for years and send all my temp files and editing files to it I d like to set up two RAM disks each large enough to contain the contents of a standard DVD Gigs With Gigs total this is no problem Thanks for your input in advance I ve got a few days left before I will blow this money and any help is VERY much appreciated LoMan eddiecurrents com nbsphttp://www.techspot.com/community/topics/multi-channel-music-computer-build.135474/
I have a Dell laptop with 120 GB hard drive, partitioned in 20GB and 100GB. Foolish, I now realise. I need to expand that small partition, or maybe merge them into one.
I have downloaded Partition Logic 0.69 and created the CD. When I boot up my Dell laptop from the CD, the Visopsys loads, but it tells me that there is no hard disk registered. Then I have to quit.
The laptop boots fine from the HDD, which is Vista SP1.
What am I doing wrong?
it might be a SATA drive and your copy of PL isnt seeing the drive
i was on disk management on my computer and i right clicked on my portable harddrive and accidently clicked delete partition how do i fix this. my hardrive wont show up in my computer or disk management so i cant partition it. i dont need to recover the data i already have it all backed up.
Unplug and re plug in the external drive while you are in Disk Management and see if an unknown device appears. You can also leave it plugged in and restart you computer. Do you get the "bing, Bong" USB connection sounds?
Hi, I recently installed xp on a new computer, I chose to partition my seagate 320gb hdd. I called the main partition c. (Don't boo, it's traditional!)
C has windows and all my programs on it, the other one (oh i divided the disk in half btw) isn't showing up in my computer. I used the windows disk to create the partition. However D isn't showing up in my computer at all, C does and says it holds half the disk capacity, but d isn't anywhere I can see Can I make it appear as it should? Or if not delete d, whilst keeping c untouched I do not want to lose my xp installation or any of my data oh btw its ntfs i used.
Thanks Bob. oh btw my dvd drive is called d is this anything to do with it?
Oh no i just noticed the storage sub forum. Sorry.
right click my computer and choose manage then click on disc management when you see the missing drive right click the drive and you should get an option to activate the disk this will allow windows to now see the drive and assign a drive letter to it
OK, I have a 100 GB IDE hard drive that I am going to replace with a 250 GB SATA drive. I have an external hard drive to which I have saved an image of the IDE drive. When I put the new SATA drive in, I want to restore that image to it.
The question I have is.....if Acronis True Image is installed on my original 100 GB drive, how exactly do I 'restore' the image to the new drive? I've read the instructions and am just not getting it. Which pi**es me off because I'm a fairly smart person. Is there an Acronis for *****s book out there?
It has been a while since I have done one, but I don't think you want the Acronis installed on the old drive. You want it on the computer of the new drive.
Hello, I have a Sony Vaio with a partitioned hard drive. One partition is about 15GB's, includes all of the OS files, and has only about half a gigabyte in empty space. The other partition has random data, measures about 127GB's, and has around 100GB's in empty space. Is there any way I can merge the partitions into one large volume without losing dada? Or should I backup everything in the second partiton before deleting it? Thanks for your help.
Hi Juanra, you will have to back up anything you want to keep, it goes away when you return that partition to the rest of the drive.
Hey! My comp can play music but when I play DVDs or run .avis I only get background music and the vocal audio is so low it's almost muted. I can't figure it out. I have DivX installed and AC3Filter as well but I use WMP and Cyberlink PowerDVD, no vocals from either. Do I need codecs? How do I find out which I need?
I've been able to boost sound with the AC3Filter and get DVD vocals now through WMP but I still am not getting any vocals from my DVDs when played through my Cyberlink PowerDVD. Any suggestions? I'm sure I'm missing a codec or something but I can't figure out what. The website I used to go to to download audio codecs for WMP11 looks down for the count so I'm at a loss.
Bought my wife a Sylvinia SMPK4068, 4gig MP3 player. My son has a zune and an account. He was able to download to an OPEL RCA MP3 player with no problems from the zune site. However when we try to down load to the Sylvinia it states it's a bad file type or can't download subscription. This is a plug and play device with an disc included for conversion of AVI files. Any suggestions? Like all the options of this unit for the price just the problems with downloads from the zune site.
I thought that site was strictly for zune users, as I own one myself, i know you cant go hooking an ipod up to it either.
For whatever reason nothing will buffer here at home (youtube, myspace, etc) after a few seconds. It'll start out working fine and then just stop buffering.
We have a wireless network here so we can share a printer. I've tried all the computers in the house (Vista, XP), multiple browsers (Firefox, Explorer, Chrome), disabling the firewall, and clearing browser data. Nothing has helped. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
try uninstalling flash and install the newest version here
I have an 80G C:\ drive, and a 250G that I plan to RAID with. I'd like to set up RAID to backup my C:\, but since that would only take up 80G of my 250, I have all that extra space, so is there a way to partition 80G out of this 250 for RAID and use the other partition for independant data?
If so, how?
Simple answer is NO. The RAID controller (or BIOS) will treat both drives as one. So they are dependent of each other regardless of what RAID implementation you are using. Why do you want RAID?? If it for redundancy (auto backup) there are other ways to achieve this using backup software. The only other reason would be to gain speed (striping). I would leave the 80gb as is, split the 250 into two partitions (i.e. D: and E Use D: as extra space to store whatever. Leave your important data on C: and do automatic differential backups from C: to E: using Ghost or Acronis. The reason for differential is it will backup only what has changed and once the drive starts filling up you can delete the oldest backups.
I am trying to management partition new windows Can't disk with create create an approximately gb partition for and OS instalation on my gigabyte media drive When Can't create new partition with windows disk management I go to Disk Management and try to shrink the volume it just sits there with the busy mouse symbol I ve left it for about minutes with no change and I ve tried this Can't create new partition with windows disk management twice After I close out computer management and I reopen it Disk Management will not find my disks until I reboot the computer It just says quot Connecting to Virtual Disk Service quot I ve also tried making a partition on my gigabyte hard drive but it will only let me make a megabyte partition even though there are gigabytes free on it The drive has free I ve made a partition on the media drive before though it didn t have as much stuff on it then but I removed that partition Is there another free partitioning tool I could use that won t erase that data on the drive Or is there some way to fix the problem Thanks TC nbsp
I have had great results with partition majic http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Hard-Disk-Utils/Partition-Magic.shtml
1)I have recently purchased HDX1155CA Laptop.I got 280 gb single partition.I want to make repartition the hard drive.Whether i can use recovery software located recovery drive to restore the original OS into repartitioned drive using recovery drive present in laptop.
2)I want to install windows 7.whether i can recover to original vista using recovery partition available with system.
Leave the partitions the way they are, upgrade to Windows 7 but leave the restore partition intact. Then when and if you want to restore back to factory specs then just do a system restore.
You can also make recovery disks for you computer then you can do whatever you want to the partitions.
I m using a laptop Runs on windows internal 2nd not Vista functioning partition of HDD vista The internal HDD is split into partitions- it was this way when I purchased the laptop The partitions are as follows- C OS and D Data The first partition contains the operation system and had initial programs upon PC purchase as well as drivers and such This partition is very small with only enough room for such as described above The nd partition is the larger remaining portion of the HDD- where the Vista 2nd partition of internal HDD not functioning user would install additional programs and store data files Both partitions are equally accessible by the user Last night I was running partition doctor on an external TB HDD This is not the issue at discussion but may have been part of the cause The external HDD uses an external power source- requiring an outlet to run Given my current location I am unable to have both the external HDD and the laptop plugged up- during part of the partition doctor operation the laptop battery was running low so I stopped the operation and shut down the laptop for the night However when I booted up the laptop the next morning I was prompted with a quot system resume quot option This has not not been the first time I had to start up my computer with a system resume due to a battery drain or unexpected computer shut down When the system booted back up the vista prompt was up- quot The following programs are still running- Shut down Cancel quot indicating that the laptop didn t shut down the previous night but instead the battery had died causing the laptop to power off incorrectly I proceeded with powering up the computer- I clicked cancel Immediately I noticed some things out of place Some programs that were scheduled to start upon system start up failed to do so Also my taskbar and windows were in the classic windows view MSN messenger proceeded to reinstall on it s own As well a new device was found window popped up and a disk drive was ready for use As I was thinking a moment gathering what was going on the computer came up with a blue screen and rebooted I went to my computer only to find out that the Data partition was missing I then went into disk manager to see if it was recognized there- and it was but as unallocated I also went into device manager it appears there too However there is a SCSI RAID host controller failure My next step I took was to reboot the computer This didn t help I then used a system restore point This didn t work either I have options I can live for- fix the issue that is causing the partition to fail to show up or recover all the data from the partition store the data on an external HDD and then format the currently failing partition then place the data back onto the partition Any help would be much appreciated nbsp
maybe im not reading you correctly but you might have screwed your data partition although i thought that 2nd partitions on systems from OEM's where for data recovery / restoration. maybe not.
if you have a backup of the data partition then i would recreate the partition as it was. put the backed up data onto it and then use something like Acronis True Image (FREE version available for Seagate / Maxtor drives) to image the whole drive (both partitions) onto your external drive.
that way, if a system or partition failure occurs in future, you can restore both partitions quickly
hope that helps
So a few days ago I tried to resize my partitions shrink my linux one and grow my XP one I decided to use the Paragon Partition Manger and it restarted went into a not-actually-in-windows mode more or less resized them and then it said it needed to reboot to continue the operation So it did that but when it did GRUB came up with an Error because the partitions had changed I had no idea recovery? Partition how to fix this so I decided to try to restore my partitions I used Partition recovery? TestDisk from a recovery CD and then loaded into Tiny XP from another CD I tried to access my drive from there but it said the file system was corrupt and now I m sitting here with a computer with nothing working on it GRUB is now giving me an error corrupt file system I m going to try to load into Knoppix via a live CD and use some of the tools on there Anybody have any recommendations I have photos movies music on there from the past years or so and I d hate to lose it all nbsp

Ok I tried everything to repair an XP install on my Qosmio GA - The recovery disk was a joke and wouldn t work I decided to skip all of the DMI junk I read about and clean install a copy of XP Put the Raid drivers on a floppy and proceeded with the install Setup would not install on the boot partition and gave me a quot page fault quot error I went into the bios and changed disk to JBOD from RAID disk was already now on Drive Deleted 1? HDDs Two 0 Drive partition in access cant System. set to JBOD Reentered setup and at the point where you select the partition to install to only one partition was shown This was not a good thing as I backed up all of my data from the C drive Disk to Two HDDs in System. Deleted partition on Drive 0 now cant access Drive 1? the F Drive Disk I went back to the BIOS and set Drive back to Raid and started the Setup procedure over again Two partitions were showing this time but Disk was not showing an F drive designator The question Did I lose all of my data on the second gb drive in the system Is my F drive recoverable Help nbsp
I think it depends on what Raid type you were using, some good info of different types here: http://www.techspot.com/vb/showthread.php?p=597010
Personally I don't like Raid all that much, as I don't think it's fantastic for data recovery or backup (which was its actual purpose, plus speed)
