Preferred Solution: laptop hangs when during sleep or hibernation with black screen

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello rajdeepak and welcome if you feel it might be a memory issue and want to do a thorough memory test mate use memtest you need to make a bootable disk for it set the BIOS to boot from optical and let it run.

This app does take a fair while to run and you should do at least seven passes. Sometimes you may find errors fairly quickly. This doesn't involve the OS by the way.

So...the title says it all. The problem occurs at random after I boot up my laptop from hibernation or sleep mode. And...I'm just going to try and describe what happens:
1. Clicks on application (ex. Chrome)
2. Blue spinny thing next to the mouse appears and stays there
3. Application doesn't open/doesn't respond
4. Moves mouse to taskbar and blue spinny thing disappears
5. Proceeds to try and right click to open task manager...when I attempt to right click, nothing happens. So I try to do the CTRL + ALT + DEL method, and that doesn't work either.
6. Realizes the only thing that seems to work during this "freezed"session are my "Sticky Notes"
7. This goes on for a good half an hour, that's basically when I give up and force shut down.

Hope that explains my situation, would appreciate any and all help!! Thanks everyone

A:Laptop Hangs and Then Freezes...Usually After Hibernation/Sleep

I'm going to hazard a tentative guess at this being a memory issue. In lieu of any other suggestions (which may come, give it time for other members to see this problem), I'd suggest you download and install Memory Cleaner - Software - Koshy John .

This small program just sits happily in the background and every five minutes will clear "Working Set" memory (applications which are open now, and using chunks of memory they should have let go of by now) and the system cache (Windows stuff, who knows what Windows does?).
Note: This is something you have to set it to do in the options.

You can also trigger the two types manually, with the pair of buttons available in the interface.
As I say, hang fire for an hour or two and see if anyone else responds because I am far from familiar with this type of problem, and am only working from my own (admittedly limited) knowledge here.

Hi,

Recently, I 'fixed' my dual boot system so that I could boot without windows again, using a recovery disk with bootrec.exe \fixmbr and bootrec.exe \fixbcd. The computer is booting properly now.

However, it has developed a problem. I can no longer enter sleep or hibernation. When trying either, the screen will fade to black as expected, but then nothing will happen; no keypresses will turn the screen on again. In the meantime, the computer seems to work 'normal', just with the screen off. After a while, the computer will simply power off and I will be greeted with 'windows didn't shut down successfully' upon restart.

I updated my drivers, updated and removed the Lenovo Power Manager, updated and resetted the BIOS, and checked powercfg -A which looks the way it should according to what I found on the internet.

Can anyone help me?

A:Unable to enter sleep/hibernation, black screen instead

Hello sanchises and welcome to Seven Forums.

It sounds like some system files might have become damaged or corrupt when you "fixed" your dual boot system. I'd try running a System File Checker scan from an elevated command prompt (Option Two), this tutorial.

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

I'd also consider running a full scan with your anti-virus of choice just in case. A couple of free on-demand scanners worth considering are Malwarebytes and ESET Online Scanner.

If the problem still exists please post back.

I'm having loads of issues with my laptop and I think it's got somethng to do with installation of Windows 10... When I leave the laptop open and on after few minutes the screen goes black but the power light is on and I can her the laptop is still working quietly but I cannot wake it up and I've tried a number of things but nothing seems to be working...? In addition, the same happens when I want to turn the laptop off; I can see the blue screen showing that the system is shutting down but then the screen goes black and the same happens - power light stays on and I can hear it working in the background but the only thing it works is to press the power button for a while and re-start it again. I'm losing will to live, please help...

Hi,
Please help if you can. Installed Windows 8 Pro clean install just kept my files. Now, every time I resume from sleep it hangs at a black screen for what seems like ever. Only way to start is to hold power button to turn off then restart it. Any help would be great. Thank you so much. Not sure if I posted this in the correct area but wasn't sure where to put it. Thanks.

Dave

Have you installed all your vendors drivers for things like video card, chipset, usb, audio, etc?

Have you made sure you have the most recent BIOS for your computer?

Hi guys!

The thread title about sums it up! When I try to wake my computer from sleep mode, my monitor gets no signal/is black. The "rest" of the computer seems to wake up just fine.

The monitor was working fine with Windows Server 2008, after sleep mode, but I just recently upgraded to windows 7.

I have already tried:

displayswitch /extend
displayswitch /internal

in a .bat file

using "Hibernate Trigger", "Power Triggers" and Windows task sheduler.

Doesn't work at all for me.

Any idea what might be wrong/how to fix it?
Any help is appretiated!

I put my laptop to sleep and I closed it I then just to check I opened it and well my computer indicator lights turned on, fan started going but screen was blank.

From google I get the idea that you should unplug power and take out battery and hold power button.

Is this correct?

Also no matter what I couldn't get my laptop to shut down by power button so I just let it drain the battery.

So now what?

A:Laptop come out of sleep mode but screen is just black.

Hello SR mate how old is the battery as I have just fixed an (admittedly) old Toshiba that would not power off if the battery was left in and although the battery kept it going but only for a short time it turned out to be the battery was cactus, and was somehow keeping the thing turned on with the power cord in.

So does this happen with the battery out? try taking it out and see what happens.

The Google is right it should drain the power completely after you power off with the Start > off button.

However it does seem to be similar situation to the fix I did.

Using a Dell Inspiron 15 N5050 Laptop (Product Support | Dell US )

I've been running Windows 10 without an issue for around 6 months now. After a recent update (Thursday), now when I boot up my computer from shutdown/restart I get a black screen. I can hear the sounds. To remedy this, I close the lid and wait for the fans to go off (Sleep). When I open it again, the screen is displayed without a problem.

I had a look at possible remedies and came across this following microsoft QA:

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/w...?page=1&auth=1

I therefore turned off fast startup and still didn't rectify the problem. I checked for updates and confirm that BIOS and all drivers are up-to-date.

It's clearly something to do with display drivers. In device manager, my display driver is: Intel HD Graphics 3000 (ver: 9.17.10.4229).

Can anyone give me any suggestions on what to try next?

I deleted accidentally (!) the hibernation file via disk cleanup and also I think cocked up some power settings on my laptop.

Now it powers on and after the Toshiba splash screen all I get is a black screen.

I have seen all the solutions about powercfg, etc but how can I actually make any changes when I can't get into it in the first place?

All the lights are on but there's nobody at home

I'd be really grateful for help as I dont want to have to leave it in anywhere if I can do it myself

I recently purchased an HP G42 - 240US. HP G42-230US Notebook PC - HP Customer Care (United States - English)

The notebook came with Windows 7 Home premium 64x.

Whenever I put the computer into sleep or hibernation mode it becomes unresponsive. The only way to get it to respond is to restart it by holding down the power button and restarting. After which, I get the msg windows has recovered from a serious error.

I had tried doing a bios update but that has not helped. The computer still freezes/crashes when the lid is closed or put in to sleep/hibernation mode.

I currently have no peripherals plugged in, and there is no biometric scanner.

Any help and or suggestions would be much appreciated.

I feel your pain and have a dear friend who just had to replace her HP G50 112NR laptop for the sleep mode had fried the mobo. HP wanted $500 to fix it which was more than she paid for it. During her long conversation with HP they told her this was a recognized problem. She bought it at Office Depot and she took it back to them and their service confirmed it was a bad mobo and arranged a deal on transferring her data to a new Toshiba laptop.

Hi!

I have a Sony Vaio VGN-CS35GN. It came pre-installed with Vista 32 bit, but I am now using a licensed institutional version of Windows 7 Professional 32-bit. There?s only one OS.

The laptop recently has a had a problem with cooling. If i was playing videos/ or even if the laptop was on for a few hours otherwise, it was shutting down immediately. But I did not get any BSODs then. I subsequently got it cleaned with a blower. But even then I had used it for a couple days after that without any BSOD.

Today, just a while back after i resumed it from sleep, it suddenly crased and showed the blue screen.

I have uploaded the SF tool report. Please let me know if you guys require anything else.

So I have to manually hold down the button to turn it off and then turn it back on, which is a great annoyance.

How can i fix this from happening?
My computer is a Toshiba Satellite 1415

A:Laptop wont recover from sleep/hibernation

Alas it's not uncommon for the computer to act in this manner, its actually "dying while asleep" for want of a better term.

More likely it dies immediately it is asked to wake up.

The cause could be any of the drivers or added hardware (if any), it's very hard to diagnose.

Laptop hardware is usually OK with hibernation, the mode was designed for use with laptop hardware in mind.

Its even possible that Windows updates may have caused a problem, with some incompatability but that is also hard to prove.

I would start by reloading every driver with the latest available from Toshibas support website.

Hello Everyone:

I have seen the many posts about the BSOD. So I went to download the Windows Debugging Tools but each time it keeps complaining about missing files. This means I have no dumpcheck utility.

The problem occurs when I reopen my lid to wake up my laptop from sleep or hibernation. Sometimes it works fine and then other times it reboots and then after my login loads the message comes up about 'windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown'. I went to Device Manager and right click to upgrade the drivers but Windows said they were already up-to-date. I also ensured that in Windows Update, I checked the optional downloads too. However, the problem still occurred.

I am hoping that the forum members will be able to assist using the crash files that I have attached. My system specs are on my profile page. Thanks.

Regards
hikarimay10

Hi I am posting in regards to a blue screen error my four year old Dell XPS M laptop has suffered recently The laptop has had two hard drives throughout it's life thus far the second and current it has used since October and is a GB Seagate Momentus ST AS SATA I have never had any problems in terms of crashes or blue screens from this drive until two weeks ago when after leaving the laptop on hibernate mode for a few minutes the laptop powered itself back on while the monitor remained off Eventually the monitor turned on but all there was was a black void of a screen and the mouse cursor there also didn't seem to be any signs of it rebooting As I had never seen this before I foolishly panicked and turned the thing off by holding the power button down Unfortunately / and Laptop hibernation freezing restarting sleep after rather than restart with the usual quot windows did not shut down properly safe mode options quot message and rebooting as normal this lead to a series of boot up mishaps crashes and power button holding shutoffs which concluded with the thing just giving up and not booting to Windows at all As a consequence I had to reinstall the Laptop freezing and restarting after hibernation / sleep entire OS and all the drivers from the disks that came originally pre-installed with the laptop As this was a clean install I presumed the problem would be wiped away with the original installation data but since I feared the crash was caused by the hibernation feature I not only stopped using it but disabled the option completely using command prompt I began using sleep mode instead So two weeks later and all on the laptop seemed to be back fine the way it was before that horrible incident but again earlier tonight while putting the laptop to sleep mode it again resumed itself without a screen and then the same lone cursor Fortunately I actually waited a while this time and it managed to restart itself with nothing seemingly damaged or data lost I then receive a box with the following message Windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown Problem signature Problem Event Name BlueScreen OS Version Locale ID Additional information about the problem BCCode f BCP BCP F BCP BCP BE C OS Version Service Pack Product Files that help describe the problem C Windows Minidump Mini - dmp C Users Skull AppData Local Temp WER- - sysdata xml C Users Skull AppData Local Temp WERAF tmp version txt I'm not sure what to make of this I am most certain it is the same problem that caused the original hibernation crash but as I was unable to record any info regarding that I can't be Unfortunately seeing as this is a past problem returning to a freshly installed OS with no new drivers added excluding the ones that came with the laptop disks which I've never had any problems with before I am concerned the problem may lie with the hardware of the laptop or the hard drive itself failing perhaps rather than any issues with drivers or software I want to make sure however which is why I am here to post the dump files for analysis I apologize for the incredibly long winded post or if my points are hard to understand If there is any info I have not included that you may need I will do my best to elaborate on it

It is difficult to find patterns and debug crashes with only one .dmp file. Are you deleting .dmp files with ccleaner?

Recommendations:The one crash included in your reports was likely caused by your Intel wireless device driver. The driver is from 2007 and likely to cause problems with Windows Vista. You can update it from the following Dell site. The Dell model is different, but the device should be the same.Dell (R) Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN

To update drivers, make sure to download the drivers from the manufacturer and not using 3rd party programs. Your drivers should be found from your motherboard support site (ASUS, Gigabyte, MSI, etc.) or your vendor support site (Dell, HP, Toshiba, Sony, etc.) first. If you have devices you bought yourself, the drivers for those devices need to be downloaded from the manufacturer support site for those devices. If you need help, let us know.

To remove drivers, do so by uninstalling the device or software associated with the driver. Devices can be uninstalled through device manager, and then the device itself should be physically removed from the system if possible.Uninstall or change a program

This problem has been going on already for about a month as far as I can recall The laptop turns on but the display is totally empty and Windows does not start at all This happens frequently after hibernation sleep What I do usually is I just turn the laptop off and turn it on again and the OS starts successfully but now it takes more than twice and it may be dangerous already to do such The laptop is still under warranty and I have it checked already at the store where I bought it The tech person did a few tweaks in the power settings It did work but after a little less than hrs the problem came back I am working as an architectural intern and most of the programs I use are heavy D drafting and D modeling softwares e g Autocad Sketchup and Lumion as well as Adobe Photoshop I use Sketchup very often Just mentioning this as it may have some bearing to the problem Thank you very much

You can troubleshoot Sleep and Hibernate by setting them to 1 and 2 minutes in Power Options. Use Balanced Plan. Then work through these Sleep Mode Problems - Vista Forums.

If this is still the factory preinstalled WIn7 then that is a corrupt install which causes many of these problems, which is why most tech enthusiasts will not run it but choose to Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7

At the minimum I'd Clean Up Factory Bloatware

I googled around and didn't find many similar incidents.  My XPS 17 (L702X) has recently developed a problem that is driving me batty.  About 60% of the time when it wakes up from hibernation or sleep, the computer comes on, but the screen doesn't.  I confirmed video from the HDMI port was working, but the LCD stays dark.  I tried setting the programmable softkey to the command that toggles your screen on and off, but when the laptop has dark screen problem that key doesn't do anything.
The only way I can get the screen to come back on, is to do a hard reboot (pushing power until it goes off, then pushing power again).  The screen comes on 100% of the time when I do this.  Any ideas?

Hey all,

I have a problem since I installed Win7 on my laptop. Whenever the laptop automatically goes to sleep or hibernation mode while the lid is closed, it wakes up with the screen black. The only thing I figured out to do is switching it off and starting it newly then.
I already updated my graphics driver (ATI Radeon X1200 Series). Maybe there's a problem there because the Catalyst Control Center which is apparently supposed to configure the graphics does not work together with the most current driver. But except for the black screen I never had a problem with that.
I'd appreciate any suggestions to solve that problem!

Hi I have a brand new laptop HP Envy with Windows Home Premium Sometimes when I come out of Hibernation mode especially a long-duration Hibernation I get a black screen that does not go away without me putting the computer into Sleep mode first The sequence of events goes like this The quot HP quot logo appears after I hit the power switch to turn on the computer The message quot Resuming Windows quot appears A black screen appears briefly with a blinking cursor black Hibernation... 7 when of out Windows screen coming in the upper-left hand corner The screen goes completely black a quot truer quot black than the one from Windows 7 black screen when coming out of Hibernation... step I can get rid of this black screen by shutting the lid of my laptop which sends it into Sleep mode and then lifting the lid again in this case the screen appears which allows Windows 7 black screen when coming out of Hibernation... me to click my username to access the desktop NOTE When coming out of Hibernation there are times when the black screen from step lasts only a few seconds but the fact that sometimes it lasts permanently without my intervention bothers me Can someone please help me resolve this Thanks

A:BSOD After hibernation black screen video error

Lot's of Windows Updates failures in the WER section of the MSINFO32 report. If the problems continue, please post over in the Windows Updates & Activation - Windows 8 Forums for further expert assistance with this issue.

Update virtual machine, video and bluetooth drivers to the latest, Win8.1 compatible version

Please note the drivers below that date from before the release of Windows 8.1 (17 Oct 2013) - check to see that each and every one is compatible w/Windows 8.1 (at the manufacturer's website). If not, you must either remove the device and it's software - or locate a Windows 8.1 compatible update on the web. Removing some drivers may make the system unstable - so if you're unable to find updates, post back for info on the one's that can/cannot be safely removed.

The drivers that are struckout don't have updates available (AFAIK).
DO NOT delete them, just leave them be.

If all of this doesn't stop the BSOD's, please run Driver Verifier according to these instructions: Driver Verifier Settings

Hi there.

I've recently built a new computer, and have been having some problems shutting it down. The computer shuts down fine if I don't put it into sleep mode, but as soon as I put it to sleep, the next time I wake it up and shut it down, it hangs on the shutting down screen.

I'm using a gigabyte z77 ud3h motherboard, and have had some problems with the usb ports so far, with certain ports being fussy about what I plug into them even though I've installed and updated all the drivers. Although I've got the usb devices I need working now, the shutdown issue still persists.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks

A:Screen Goes Black-Computer Hangs

irainbow said:

Really don't know where to post this, so forgive any inappropriate posting.

I'm running Windows XP Home, SP2 -- all updates current.

My problem is that my computer has just been freezing up and the screen going black for no reason I can figure. I've checked "sleep" and "hibernate" settings, and they all seem to be off. I've instructed the computer to NEVER go to sleep.

At first, I had the problem which I thought may have been linked to my newly-purchased & registered version of AVG AntiVirus, but then I took everything out of System Start-up EXCEPT for that, changed the time for daily update and it seemed to fix things.

Then the other day, I installed Kodak's Easy Share software for my new digital camera, and the problem started again. Suspecting the software,
I uninstalled that just this morning, and restarted the computer after the uninstall. After that, my mouse would no long choose just a single selection of anything -- no matter how much I clicked, it would choose multiple selections. So, I rebooted.

Seems fine now -- BUT I am leary, and of course, I have to reinstall the camera software in order to be able to transfer the pictures.

Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this problem?

Thanks in advance,
Iris

I have no idea what to tellClick to expand...

Iris,

I don't know if this will help at all, but here goes:

When you install software, such as the Kodak Easy Share, do you shutdown every running Windows application to do the install - and your Internet connection, and or broadband connection (don't know what you have).

Most software installers advise you to shutdown any running Windows applicatons before proceeding with the install. Do you follow that procedure?
If not, when you install, the new software might be in conflict with something that is running.

Also, you didn't mention it, but do you run a software firewall? Have a hardware router? If not, and are just on dialup, you can download ZoneAlarm Free from http://www.zonelabs.com It will stealth your ports and notify you of unauthorized outbound connection attempts. Good to have to keep the crackers from knowing there is a computer at your IP address, and if a trojan is able to get onto your system, to help stop its call-home.

I am having a go at sorting out a friend's Dell Dimension which is running XP. If I boot normally, it gets as far as the start up xp screen, then the screen goes black and the monitor indicator light glows orange then green then orange etc

When I boot in safe mode, the pc hangs at: System 32\Drivers|Mup.sys

It will eventually get past this, but that is obviously where the problem lies.

I was going to do a complete reinstall, but since I cant see the screen......

Any help and advice would be very much appreciated!

I have a Packard Bell All in One computer which I have tried to keep up to date with Windows updates, also have CCleaner, Malwarebytes, AdwCleaner and Secunia which are all up to date, however when starting up and now becoming quite frequent my machine starts the start up process, gets part way and then goes to a black screen and hangs. Sometimes after a few minutes(5-6?) it will continue to a fully set up mode but when loading Outlook it loads the screen but then goes into Not Responding mode and I have to shut down to be able to restart everything(which it then does without issue). On other occasions after the initial start up screen it goes to a black screen and just hangs permanently(but after restarting will often load without issue).

Running Windows 7 with Current up to date Service Pack 2

Can anyone suggest a solution or reason why this is happening?
Thanks

Greetings My PC is windows bit service pack Lately I've been having a recurring Hanging Freezing issue It appears to happen randomly sometimes when it's sitting on the desktop sometimes when typing in a forum like this other times while playing a game The computer will freeze or hang the mouse might still move a little bit for a second Then the screen usually goes black Sometimes I can still move the mouse but it will only move in a jerking fashion every couple seconds rather and Black Screen Freeze/Hangs than smoothly Some of the screen will sometimes start to come back like the bottom or top of the screen but the rest Freeze/Hangs and Black Screen is still black However every time it ultimately results in the computer completely locking up and I am forced to turn it off and back on I've scanned my entire PC multiple times with Malwarebytes Spyhunter MSE and others I used CCleaner to clean up my registry I made sure my video drivers are updated and windows update is all up to date as well None of that helped My video cards do tend to run hot when playing graphic intensive games but I've played for a long time like that with no issues I use in crossfire mode though despite multiple varifications saying its on and working I never see the nd card having any GPU Freeze/Hangs and Black Screen Load Though the st card never gets to load either Just in case that is the issue I just now took out the main card altogether and swapped it with the nd card Currently waiting for it to hang again as it appears completely random I use GPU-Z and Coretemp to monitor my temps If these aren't the best options or something else is needed I can download whatever programs and run whatever tests you Freeze/Hangs and Black Screen need for more info I'm pretty good with using computers in general but I have less experience troubleshooting an issue such as this so please try to be as clear as possible Please help Thanks

A:Black screen after Sleep, can't do or see anything

Welcome to the Seven Forums!

Try blindly tapping the F8 key during a reboot in the hopes that you get to the safe mode.

You might also borrow/try another external monitor - besides the one that you've already tried. Maybe visit a store and tell them of your problem, they might let you hook up to a monitor or two just to test.

Hi there. I have a Toshiba Satellite 1805-s207. If my computer is running off its battery rather than the AC adapter, and it goes to sleep, I can't get the screen to start up again by hitting keys or the trackpad, even though I can tell by the lights and fan sounds that the computer is on. I have to then manually shut the computer off and restart, even if programs and documents are running. That means those documents have to be recovered. Can anybody give me some guidance about how this is best fixed? Thanks! Rachel

A:Screen won't come out of black after sleep

Rachel,

I do believe that there have been several reported problems with Windows and Sleep Mode. You may wish to search the MS Knowledge base for the Op/Sys you are using.

Also, you may wish to turn off Sleep Mode in Power Management to get around the problem for now.

It installed in another machine in a virtual environment, no problem.

In this machine, it installed, then re-booted itself (to complete setup?), I selected W7, and after 'Starting Windows', it goes black, with a cursor.

No rt-click, no Ctrl+Alt+Del, no Shift+F10, nothing lights up.

Ideas here?

A:RTM install hangs with black screen + cursor...

So I turned on my Sony TV in the other room, and Windows was using that as display #1. The monitor (#2) was not configured, so was not displaying.

On the Sony, I found 700 instances of Admin CLI boxes open. This machine is not online.

I have seen on the same machine, with Linux booted, dialogue boxes, such as for naming a file or folder, filling up with 1's. Once, it was in a command line window, and when I closed the window, a desktop file started adding 1's to the file name.

Could this be a BIOS virus??? BIOS bug?

As the title explains, I have a new HTPC I built with the following equipment.

Motherboard: Intel DG45ID Socket 775 Motherboard
CPU: Intel Pentium Dual Core E2200 2.2Gh
Memory: Kingston 4096MB PC6400 DDR2 800MHz (2x2048)

I have a 500gb with three primary partitions

100gb XP Pro
100gb (for win 7)
rest for data

Using a booting USB and selecting clean install, the install completes mostly, it reboots a few times like normal. When it should be time to enter the key, the screen is completely black *except* for the Windows 7 watermark.

Are there any known issues with this board and the on-board graphics chip?

Can anybody recommend a HDMI card to drive my Plasma Display that has good 7 support?

A:Windows XP 64 Boot Hangs Up on Black Screen

May be Hard drives goes bad. Once it does, and if it is only half alive, it will go into mode where it registers itself as such and such harddrive, but when programs try to access any data, it will hang... It sounds like this is the case. You need to get new hard drive.
If computer hangs when it tries to access harddrive, it usually means that it is not accessible anymore by any software means. If this is the case, you need to contact professional data recovery services

I haven't have this problem before, so I am really at a lost how to solve this stupid problem.

Brand new hardware. Bios booted fine, 1st boot set to CD-ROM.
Put in Windows XP cd, booting.... then it goes into black screen. Nothing responds. I assumed PC hanged cos the capslock or scrolllock doesn't work.

What's wrong? CD is definitely good cos I have used that in my laptop and it worked fine.

This is my specs:

Motherboard: eVGA nForce 780i SLI 775 A1 - motherboard - ATX - nForce 780i SLI - LGA775 Socket
CPU: Intel C2Q Q9300 2.50 GHZ OEM
RAM: 4MB
OS: Windows XP 64 Pro

My problem started a few days ago after I changed my virtual memory settings. Now I can't get booted up. After six hours two days I got it to finally boot up. It gets to the Windows Logo and then goes to a black screen and hangs. I can't get past it now.

Tried to boot into the Recovery utility with the Windows disk, but can't seem to get into it and use it.

I tried using the bootcfg and fixboot commands but doesn't seem to have helped.

I hate to have to re-install Windows XP 64 Pro, and not even sure if I can do that, the way the PC hangs up.

Could it be a hardware problem? Should I flash the BIOS? Upgrade to Windows 7?

A:That black screen of death (computer hangs)

Hello and welcome to Techspot.

May I say what a well written post you have.

First, what psu do you have? The reason I ask is because depending on the power output, and quality or your psu, it may be the culprit in all this.

Go HERE and use this handy psu wattage calculator. Bear in mind, that a generic no name psu will struggle to put out anywhere near it`s advertised rated wattage. Even a good quality psu only achieves around 70% efficiency.

What are your cpu temps? This is another area that may need looking at.

You can download the Speedfan programme from HERE. Also do you have the cool `n` quiet feature of your cpu enabled? If so turn it off, and see if this helps. You can do this by going into your bios. I know this may sound strange, but I recently did this to a friends computer, who was having a similar problem, and it did seem to help. If it doesn`t help, then you can always turn it on again.

And last but not least. It may be an idea to test you ram for errors. Download and run the Memtest86+ programme from www.memtest.org.

Let it run for at least seven passes. If you don`t have a floppy drive, there is an iso version, that you can burn to cd, and then boot from that.

I don`t know if any of the above will help.

Regards and good luck Howard

Okay, I've seen many people with this problem, and all of the solutions provided do not seem to work for me. I've had the problem of vista hanging at a black screen every now and then, but after a few restarts it would boot up fine. Now though, its not booting up at all, displays the vista loading screen and then hangs at a black screen. I've tried running safe mode(s) and last known configuration to no avail. Safe mode hangs after it gets to crcdisk.sys (I've let it sit there for about 30 minutes) and last known configuration just hangs at the black screen too. I've tried inserting my factory restore cd, and it loads up to the screen with a vista background and a mouse, but does nothing else (I've let that one load for about an hour or two) I would very much like some help please.

Before I read the entirety of your post, I was about to mention that 278 converted to Hexademical is in fact 0x116, which is a BSOD bugcheck code.

Please post using - Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Posting Instructions - Windows 10, 8.1, 8, 7 & Vista

Moreover, whilst your posting your dump files, I would suggest updating your graphics card drivers, since almost always Stop 0x116's are related to those said drivers.

Where did you get Win7? Did you burn the Disk yourself? If so try another at 4x speed.

Unplug all other HD's and peripherals, Boot into BIOS setup to see if there is an EFI Boot Disk in BIOS Boot order. If so remove it, set DVD drive first to boot. If EFI BIOS also set to Legacy BIOS. Then set SATA controller to AHCI. Save changes and Exit.

Then boot into installer DVD or flash stick burned or written using tool and latest ISO here.
How to Boot your Computer from a Bootable CD or DVD

At first installer screen Press Shift + F10 to open a Command Box, type:

DISKPART
LIST DISK
SEL DIS 0 (after confirming Windows 7 target HD #)
CLEAN
CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY SIZE=102400 (for 100gb partition, adjust as desired)
FORMAT FS=NTFS LABEL="WINDOWS 7"
ACTIVE
EXIT
EXIT

Next click Install Now to Clean Install Windows 7 to the partition you created. If it fails then report back at which step and the verbatim error message.

In addition read over these steps to understand the tools and methods which work best to get and maintain a perfect Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7. The steps are the same for retail.

I am new here so apologies for being a newbie. I have a mid ranged gaming tower from ncix. That's about 7 months old. Its a 64bit windows 7 with 12gbs ram and 1tb hard drive.

I was playing Starcraft with friends earlier today when suddenly the computer restarted during the match and was unable to boot up again after the sudden restart. It hangs at a black screen with the blinking underscore.

Any help on the matter would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance and sorry if this has been posted before.

Possibly after overheating the screen, I can no longer boot Vista except with a rescue disk. I've tried the latter several times. Sometimes it runs a chkdsk and sometimes it reports "no problems". I get as far as a live cursor on a black screen, going into hibernation with a regular boot almost immediately, and into a screen saver in safe mode after a while. The ntbtlog.txt file returns a list with 150 driver entries. Not loaded are NDProxy.sys; srv.sys; and parport.sys

The reason I know all this is because a Puppy Linux usb stick OS boots perfectly with an aux. monitor connected. But I want my Vista back! Please advise.

Hello Nicky, thanks for posting here for assistance, i will toss out an idea for you to try as i think you have an issue that this may well fix for you.
Look at this please : Startup Repair: frequently asked questions

This is a start up repair which basically goes like this :
first this : Boot into the System Recovery Options screen.
then do this : Click on the Startup Repair option.
Note : The Startup Repair tool will attempt to fix your computer and get it booting up again.
Note : Startup Repair might prompt you to make choices as it tries to fix the problem, and if necessary, it might restart your computer as it makes repairs. If repairs are not successful, you'll see a summary of the problem and links to contact information for support. Your computer manufacturer might include additional assistance information.

Brink, who is one of the Admins on this site has posted an answer to a similar issue as you have described. So, if this works. he gets all credit.
Thanks again for you post. Please post back results so we may do something else if this is not working for you.

I'm not sure if this counts as a crash but please bear with me here I have a Sony Vaio VPCSB FX W laptop I lock the screen it's password protected too and close the lid when I need to get up to do something else while using it Usually sleep after mode--why? screen Black the blue Windows lock screen shows up when I open the laptop but just now I got a black screen that wouldn't respond to any buttons so I shut the laptop down manually by holding down the power button When I booted up and logged in I got the old 'Windows was shut down unexpectedly' message Just Black screen after sleep mode--why? curious why did I get the black screen Also the power button was Black screen after sleep mode--why? green which means it wasn't in sleep mode at all and the laptop's fan was whirring loudly too This has happened to me a couple of times before and I usually wait at least - seconds for the black screen to respond before shutting down though the fan makes a louder noise the longer I wait This happened even though the lid was closed properly I'm hoping you guys can give me some advice on how to prevent this from happening in the future please and thank you

A:Black screen after sleep mode--why?

I still recommend following the http://www.sevenforums.com/crashes-d...tructions.html if you have had blue screens in the past. You said you usually get a blue screen during these circumstances, and those are the best method to determine why sometimes you also get the black screen. It is highly likely the behaviors are related to each other, and this behavior usually indicates a Bug Check 0x9F: DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE crash.

A:Black screen after waking from sleep

Hi @PapaDelta52?, Thank you for your inquiry.  I grasp that you have your notebook set to enter sleep mode when you close the lid.  When you open the lid you can hear the fan and  hard drive spin up, but the display remains black or blank.  If you press a key or move the mouse the screen responds. You have tried the  power setting troubleshooter, disabling  hybrid boot, resetting the  BIOS to default, updating  graphics and all other drivers, but the problem persists. When I checked the software and driver page for your notebook Windows 10 is  not a supported operating system.  HP has not tested Windows 10 on your model of notebook and the outcome is unknown.   This does not mean it will not work only that the outcome is unknown.  HP does not guarantee that Windows updates will have drivers. Here is a link to  HP PCs - Sleep and Hibernate Issues (Windows 10, 8) that may help. Please let me know the outcome.Thank you  for participating in the HP Forums! A:Screen black after sleep wakeup

Try using System Restore to set it back to a point before this problem started happening - IMO that's the easiest and 2nd most successful way of fixing this problem.

Also, update your video, chipset, and storage drivers - just in case.

This is the most successful way of fixing KSOD (Black Screen of Death) issues:
At work we don't mess with these issues - as it can take weeks to solve them (and no one wants to pay me by the hour to troubleshoot their computer for weeks!). We slave the hard drive to another system (to backup the data), then we do a diagnostic (to make sure there's no overt hardware issues), then we wipe the hard drive and clean install Windows.

A:Solved: Windows XP hangs at black load screen

I was able to resolve this issue by going into Windows in Safemode. I went to my computer and right clicked the C drive and chose Properties/Tools/Error-Checking.

I check marked both options for Error fixing and then rebooted back to Safe Mode. It took a long time to do the error checking but when it finished it rebooted and Windows XP came back normally.

This is something to try for those with a similar issue.

Sorry for the delay in responding. If you still need help with this, please start with these free hardware diagnostics:  http://www.carrona.org/hwdiag.html Your post said that you'd run some of the tests, so feel free to skip those that you've run.  As the graphics card is a possible suspect, please be sure to run those tests and let us know the results. Your UEFI/BIOS (version 2402) dates from 2010.  Please check at the manufacturer's website to see if there are any UEFI/BIOS updates available for your system.  If you are able to install the update through Windows (without booting from an external drive), then go ahead and update it.  WARNING - if the computer might shut down during this procedure, please don't do it, as this may physically damage the computer and prevent it from booting. These devices have problems in Device Manager: Сетевой контроллер NVIDIA nForce    PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0373&SUBSYS_CB841043&REV_A3\3&2411E6FE&0&88    Это устройство отключено.NVIDIA High Definition Audio    HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_10DE&DEV_0071&SUBSYS_10438508&REV_1001\7&2CBF1AA9&0&0001    Это устройство работает нормально. The first item is your nVidia nForce networking driver while the second is for the High Definition audio that' often a part of the video card.As such, you'll have to update both to the latest, Win10 compatible version. As there are no drivers for later than Win7 here:  http://www.nvidia.com/download/driverResults.aspx/30655/en-us I'd have to wonder if this system has reached it's limit of upgradability and just isn't compatible w/Win10Should you decide to keep working on this, download the latest version of the chipset and video drivers for your system from nVidiaThen run them in Compatibility Mode for the version that they were intended for (for example, you'll run the chipset drivers in Compatibility Mode for Win7 - as that's the latest version that's available). There are many Live Kernel Events listed in the WER section of MSINFO32:Please do the following:- open Event Viewer (run eventvwr.msc from the "Run" dialog)- expand the Custom Views category (left click on the > next to the words "Custom Views")- right click on Administrative Events- select "Save all Events in Custom View as..."- save the file as Admin.evtx- zip up the file (right click on it, select "Send to", select "Compressed (zipped) folder")- upload it with your next post (if it's too big, then upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link here).FYI - If we're looking for Event ID 41 errors (unexplained shutdowns), there's more info on that here:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2028504While waiting for a reply, please monitor your temps with this free utility:  http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.htmlThere are no memory dumps in the uploaded reports, yet there's at least 4 BSOD's reported in the WER section of MSINFO32.Please do this: Upload Dump Files:NOTE:  If using a disk cleaning utility, please stop using it while we are troubleshooting your issues. Please go to C:\Windows\Minidump and zip up the contents of the folder.  Then upload/attach the .zip file with your next post.Left click on the first minidump file.Hold down the "Shift" key and left click on the last minidump file.Right click on the blue highlighted area and select "Send to"Select "Compressed (zipped) folder" and note where the folder is saved.Upload that .zip file w... Hello,I went through the steps for malware removal with one of the pros who review the HiJack This logs. Upon completion, I noticed my PC hangs on the black screen when I start or restart. This had not happened prior to the infection. Perhaps a registry issue caused by the malware? It takes several attempts either hitting the reset button or the power button to get it to fully boot up. I'm leary of restaring at all for fear that it won't come back up. Your HiJack This pro referred me to this forum for further assistance. I am running Windows XP Pro SP2 and am including the URL to my HJT thread for further info in case it may be of assistance. http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/ind...mp;#entry949041Thank you,OrygunGal

Try doing a System Restore, if this doesn't work there are a couple of things we can do.Start> All Programs> Accessories> System Tools> System Restore. When this opens make sure that "Restore my computer to an earlier time" is chosen, and click on Next>.The dates appearing in bold are the dates that you can restore to, click on the date that you want and then click Next> to start the System Restore. This may take a long time to complete, and when it is done it will restart your computer. When the computer restarts and you have logged on as the administrator a Restoration Complete page will appear, click on OK to complete the process.

I've been having this problem for many weeks now, and I haven't gotten closer to fixing it. I had to resort to borrowing a computer from a friend to use while I try to figure this out.

It's a problem similar to this one, except I can't even boot to safe mode. I have taken the RAM out one at a time and booted, but it will still stay at the black screen. I have tried reinstalling XP, and installing it on another drive to boot from there, but neither of them fixed the problem. Since I can't boot at all, I can't run HJT or those other programs that were posted in that thread.

Does anyone have any solutions? I've tried asking around to friends and other tech support sites, but none of them could help.

This is a Windows 8 OEM CD install, on an i7 x64 system. I have tried this with both UEFI and legacy modes.

I cleaned the drive and allowed setup to partition and format how it sees fit on an Intel SSD.

The system copies files, sets them up and reboots.

The blue windows logo is up for a minute, then the screen (not the PC) power cycles (probably due to a resolution change). It hangs there on a black screen. There is a mouse cursor that responds and the num lock toggles on the kb, but nothing else. CTRL-ALT-DEL does nothing.

Any ideas?

A:W8 CD install hangs on black screen after 1st auto reboot

To me it sounds like there is something wrong with disc, might just have a scratch or be defective. Do you have the product key? If you do you should be able to hypothetically just download the same version of Windows 8 from the web and use that for the install as long as you have the product key for that computer.

I'm having a problem where if my laptop is idle and the screen goes black, I can't get it to resume. I try moving the mouse and hitting buttons, but nothing happens. I have to completely shut the PC off and start it again. Also, if I put it to sleep, the same thing happens (it goes black but doesn't sleep or resume). My drivers are all up to date but it still happens.

A:Black Screen waking from sleep mode

"select boot device" is normally a message form BIOS id it can't find a proprt boot device. I think win7 crashed and did an automatic reboot. On reboot it couldn't find or access the harddisk. Do you have "automatic restart on crash" enabled? If so, disable it so you can see the BSOD

I get responses from my keyboard lighting etc. But the screen stays black. I have to shut down my laptop by holding down the power button, when it restarts, it works again.I also have to mention that my computer froze more than often the las couple of days, with only the internet on and my fan is making a lot of noice, with no heavy programms running.  Does somebody has any idea what the problem could be? Thank you in advance! Kind regards, Maarten

A:Win 8 Pro x64 After wake from sleep black (blank) screen

Just an update, Been doing a lot of searching of the internet about my problem and I was about to give in, I kept thinking it was my GPU drivers. But I was wrong

I was thinking I might have had some ideas off people from my post, but I guess without it crashing and giving a bsod it made it hard to find what was the problem.

Just to give help to anyone else reading this post I think I have found the answer . I though I had the most up to date drivers for my ACHI controller from the Asus website which where newer than what I had installed.

But once I found out that I had a Intel 5 series chipset, I found some more up to date drivers on Intel's website. Even though when I went there before and ran an online scan it did not offer any updated drivers (I guess Asus had changed them so Intel did not know them to update?)

So the moral I guess is if you think you might have up to date drivers maybe sometimes you need to keep looking, Hope this helps someone as this is a great forum.

Make a System Restore point
Backup your data
There's no telling when this will stop working for you.

Uninstall all ATI software from your system.
Then go to http://www.ati.com and download the Display Driver Only (NOT the Catalyst Control Center) for your video card and OS
Install that Display Driver Only and see if the error stop.

Hello!

I have a problem with the hybrid sleep mode.
Whenever I try to put my notebook in sleep mode everything works ok, also normally waking up the system.
But when I disconnect the power cord and restart the system, Windows tries to resume its state but suddenly stops with a black screen and a blinking cursor.
I have absolutely no problems with normal sleep and normal hibernate (shutdown -h).

For a short time hybrid sleep worked only when I put the system to sleep with the notebook FN keys, but not through the Win start menu.
Now it doesn't work at all. Maybe this was also just a coincidence.

Can anyone help me?
Thanks in advance and best regards!

Windows Does Not Start After Sleep

This was a fix for a common error that we had here, on a previous thread. It seemed to cause the error in waking from sleep.
Perhaps disabling Hybrid sleep will fix this for you.

Hi

This thread kind of looks like my other one in Windows 7 support. I kind of got an black screen after putting my computer to sleep mode. I was away for an hour and when I got home again it just recovered with three options upon bootup.

1. Bootup on safety & Network
2. Safety without network
3. Normal windows bootup.

Does anybody know how to fix this so i can put my computer to sleep mode without any black screen crashes?

That usually indicates a driver issue, and it can be coupled with a blue screen that you do not see due to the sleep sequence.

Even if it was not accompanied by a blue screen (that you did not see), the http://www.techsupportforum.com/foru...ta-452654.html may be able to help us help you track down the problem.

I cant get Windows to load.. when I try safe mode it goes through a list of files then hangs on...

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS\system32\DRIVERS\agp440.sys

I have tried to do a repair install following instructions from Microsoft but when I press 'R' on the page that lists the partitions, nothing happens. It doesn't give the option to press R either.

Please help
