Drives not showing, folders/file icons/thumbnails not showing

Q: Drives not showing, folders/file icons/thumbnails not showing

I have just built a new computer using Windows Pro bit however I've noticed when I open Windows explorer out of times it will continuously search for drives when opening up explorer and not show any drives that are installed I've tried reformatting using different hard drives but the problem persists no matter what I do I've reinstalled Windows with only a single drive plugged in tried different SATA ports but this folders/file icons/thumbnails showing Drives not showing, not problem keeps Drives not showing, folders/file icons/thumbnails not showing coming back The only thing I can think of is that the Windows install disk is corrupted and not installing properly I've also noticed that once it starts searching like this the icons wont display in any folder although the file names will Likewise when trying to sort files Drives not showing, folders/file icons/thumbnails not showing by date type etc they will not sort When this happens I can easily type in Drives not showing, folders/file icons/thumbnails not showing C to get to the drive without problem to access the drive but above problems with icons not showing sorting etc still is a problem Has anyone had this problem Know of a way to fix this I'm not looking forward to having to reformat again as I don't have the time to sit through and reinstall everything again after

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Why is it that sometimes the folders icons show samples of their contents and sometimes not?

Check the two images: the first shows Desktop in Windows Explorer; the second shows the desktop itself.

Any idea on how to make Windows always show the folders contents samples?

I had Windows Vista since last year and everything was fine. Yesterday, my icons/thumbnails on the internet disappeared and show a box with symbols. I can tell what the box says when I scroll over but how do I get the icons back. I restored the firewall to its default setting and the icons came back but now they're gone again. Please help.

I have checked in the only two places I was aware of that would cause this:

Folder Options - View ....however, there is no option there to check show Thumbnails. I believe this option should be there at the top, but it isnt.

I also went to Properties of My Computer, Advanced, Performance. It is checked there to show Thumbnails.

But for whatever reason, I only see icons when I should see thumbnails. And yes, I have changed the view to Medium, large, extra large.

Hello Dave,

You might double check through each option in the tutorial below to see if it may help. It's for Windows 7, but it's the same in Windows 8 except "Windows Explorer" is "File Explorer" in OPITION FOUR instead.

A:Issue showing image Thumbnails when browsing folders

Hi hollyw,

Welcome to Vista Forums!

Here's a tutorial on how to do this in a variety of ways. Try them in the order presented as that's from the simplest to the most complex (even though I imagine you tried the first few already). Note the comment (and link to the procedure) near the top to set the default program to Windows Photo Gallery if none of the other options work (which you may or may not want to consider - or perhaps at least try to see if it works - let us know either way - and change it back if you don't want that as the default): Thumbnails in Windows Explorer.

If that doesn't work, try rebuilding the Icon Cache: Icon Cache - Rebuild to see if that helps.

If that doesn't work, you may want to clear the thumbnail cache (it won't delete anything but the cache and will rebuild itself when you open folders though it may take more time the first time you do so as it needs to do this first). Here's how: Thumbnail Cache.

I hope this helps. If not, post back with results of what you tried and we'll try some different options.

Good luck!

Hi everyone. I am having this problem with the My Music folder. I am using Windows XP Professional. Basically, whenever I select to view the folders as thumbnails, the title of the folder does not show up. This happened the other day. I think I hit some kind of key combination wrong or something and it caused it to do that. How do I fix it?

Some of the thumbnails aren't showing up windows explorer even though they are the same file type. There will be 12 episodes of a show in .AVI or .MKV, and only 9 will have thumbnails, the other 3 don't. I have the Haali Media Splitter on to show thumbnails and I installed the Windows Service Pack to to it too (not sure which one is actually working, if I had to guess I'd say it's Haali).

To enable the thumbnails on Haali Media Splitter I click it, the went: options → explorer integration → show thumbnails (yes) → thumbnails offset (10000)

Not sure what is wrong...can anyone help?

And this is a problem with pretty much all the file types, some thumbnails showing and some not when they're in the same folder and I got them from the same source (all the files in a folder are either AVI or MKV, but the problem happens with both)

I know there are some threads about this. but I couldn't solve my problem using those. so I decided to make a new thread instead of bumping the old ones.
Well, Here is my problem:
recently I installed a fresh copy of windows 8 on my PC. it was nothing wrong with it till I installed Kaspersky Endpoint Security 10 (v. & did a reboot.
Now non of my files including picture, audio & video files show thumbnails or even tags (ex mp3 files).
I've tried the solutions stated about turning thumbnails on & off with no luck. in my folder options the option "Always show icons, never thumbnails" is UNCHECKED.

Has anybody faced the problem?? Is the issue from Kaspersky?? Are there any workarounds??

I truly Appreciate any help.

PS. I also have some difficulties pinning folders to windows explorer taskbar icon since then.

A:Unable to change folder icons + folders showing the wrong icons

Hi, whenever you are about to make changes to your registry, back up beforehand. So you now know that and I'll show you an excellent way to rescue yourself in future.

First, do you have System Restore turned on (it's off by default in '10), and do you have any useful restore points?
Second, have you made a system image using Windows Backup and Restore or do you use disk imaging?

Either of those could let you restore your PC to a point before you made these changes- hopefully System Restore would protect enough to reverse your changes.

Please advise.

If you can't do that, and you are convinced there is a problem, then you may have two options, assuming you've not done some damage to the registry.

1. If you create a new user account for test purposes, do your folders look normal?

2. If not, I suggest you do an in-place upgrade repair install.
I will provide the instructions if necessary when you have replied.

Please post back and advise on these points.

I can also tell you how to achieve this quite easily and relatively safely:
Now here's the backup method we strongly recommend:
Creating disk images lets you restore Windows and all your disks and partitions to a previous working state, quickly and probably without technical help.

You can recover from:
- a failed disk drive (restore to a new one)
- ransomware (which encrypts your disk)
- user error
- unrecoverable problems from failed updates to problem programs
- unbootable PC (hardware faults aside)

Images also act as a full backup- you can extract files too.

You can even use images to help you move more easily and quickly to a new PC.

Imaging can even help you sleep at night knowing you have a second chance.

Many here recommend Macrium Reflect (free) as a good robust solution and more reliable than some others. It?s
- more feature rich
- more flexible
- more reliable
than Windows Backup and Restore system images.

It's well supported with videos, help and a responsive forum.

I used to open Outlook, create a new email then click on "attach file". I would then get a drop down menu of the recent files I've worked with. There were some files on this recent list that I wanted to remove. I couldn't figure out how to remove only the select one or two files, so I cleared the history. A:local drives are showing up in File History

File History works best with external drives or network locations. If your external drive is not recognized, create an empty folder called "File History" (without the quotes) in the root directory of the external drive you want to use. Try again if it is showing up now.

I am trying to remove empty folders using Remove Empty Directories. I know of a few that are empty, and just ran a test to see if RED would detect they were empty. Well, to my surprise, I am finding that RED shows 1 (or more) file in these folders (a JPG at 0.00 MB), but it's not showing up in the folder. Is there any way I can have these show up in folders so I can search for all JPG's and delete them? Example:

I do have "Show hidden files, folders and drives" checked under folder options as well.

You could try running JPG Cleaner v2.6

I use this software on a regular basis. I'd suggest limiting it's use to only one problem folder on your machine as a test run.

Run the program with admin rights then from the GUI choose Add Folder then browse to your test folder. Additionally choose the option to delete Unknown Files and also untick the option to Create Backup Files.

Then choose Start and when the cleanup is completed there is an option to save a log file. Save the log file somewhere and have a look at it to view the results.

Additionally you could run the program again choosing the Delete Corrupt Files option.

If you're happy with the results - go ahead and add the other remaining folders or directories to be cleaned.

I've never encountered any problems using this software but as always before running any sort of cleaning product it's best to at least create a system restore point to fall back on and ideally have a system image backup handy.

The problem could be because all the data that was present inside the pen drive now have become system files by the virus. This is the reason why they are not visible even with the option “Show Hidden files and folders”.
To remove the problem this is what you need to do.
1. Go to Folder Options -> View tab
2. Make sure that your Show Hidden files and folders option is enabled.
3. Uncheck the option that reads “Hide protected operating system files (recommended)”

Now when you see your pen drive, you will find that your data is present there but in hidden form. There are 2 ways to unhide the data, either right click and uncheck the Hidden box or type in the following command in the command prompt
attrib filename –h –r –s
where filename is the complete location of the file.

Let me know if it solved your problem.

I ran a virus scan not just three days ago? Nothing showed up. Re-running another one... and nothing has yet to show up.

The problem is in the purple rectangle in the attachment. (Did the same exact thing when I was uploading this picture).

Hi All would love some help with this - in theory - easy problem It's just that I've tried all the solutions that my Google-Fu skills up Thumbnails not showing have turned up and nothing seems to be working for me The issue is this Essentially when I open a folder with photos in it I only see jpg icons I do not see Thumbnails not showing up the thumbnails of the photos Some weird things that are happening When I change the view from large icons to medium icons nothing special happens besides the icon images getting smaller But when I change BACK from medium Thumbnails not showing up to large I briefly see the correct thumbnails and as I watch the icon image literally loads over the thumbnails one Thumbnails not showing up by one Essentially I have to sit there and cry as I watch all my thumbnails disappear and turn into useless icons If I try this a second time in the same folder nothing special happens anymore I simply see the icon image I've made sure that clicking organize- gt folder and search options- gt view tab - gt Always show icons never thumbnails is UNCHECKED I've made sure that clicking start- gt control panel- gt system- gt advanced system settings- gt settings under performance - gt Show thumbnails instead of icons is CHECKED I've run disk cleanup and cleaned up my thumbnail cache I've downloaded a Clear and Reset Thumbnail Cache bat file from a different forum and run that several times And yet I still only see icons I will admit that the pictures I am trying to view are on an external hard drive but I do have a couple photos on my desktop that are also only showing icons instead of thumbnails Anybody out there have any ideas what could be happening Thanks in advance for any help you can offer

On my USB external drive, when I connect it to either an XP desktop or a W7 laptop, the video files show as thumbs ie: small pictures of the content. There is a registry issue where sometimes the explorer cannot locate the thumbnails
and there for when browsing through the folder some files dont have a thumbnail but
a generic symbol for the type of folder it is, You can fix it by following the next procedure

1) Save the Registry Fix file as Registry.cmd
2) Then run the batch file with elevated administrator privileges.

And you should see an improvement,

When I open Windows Explorer I and go to my Picture File, the Thumbnails don't always show correctly. I can open Windows Explore and see no Thumbnails displayed but if I open another copy, it's better but not all come up. I have multiple folders, some display no thumbnails (a blank white sheet), others show a few and others show more. I also get a green bar at the top that never finishes. Sometimes, I open Explorer, and if I try to expand the Folder Tree on the left panel it won't expand, The Files are on an External Flash Drive. I've tried many troubleshooting searches for the problem so yes, I have the Folder Option, "View" set to "Display thumbnails." This is a recent problem. Just within the past week or so, when viewing pics in windows explorer, only some of the thumbnails will show the image they are representing. Some won't. I tried rebuilding the library and doing Disk Cleanup to delete them so they'd rebuild; I've checked/unchecked the "show icons not thumbs" to see if that would kick it into showing it. Nothing has helped.
Also, maybe related, when opening up any Windows explorer window, the green bar at the top is very slow to load all the way to the right, sometimes never getting to the other side.

Hello. The thumbnails in my music folder don't display correctly for some of my subfolders.

I've Googled this before and I haven't found any useful solutions. It seems most people just clear their thumbnail cache, but that only seems to work on the C: drive. My music folder is on a separate partition.

Anyway, this is the problem .... I have my music folder, and all subfolders, "optimized" for music. In an artist folder, the album folders will usually show the proper album artwork.

However, when I go up a level, the artist folder doesn't show the album thumbnails in it. In this picture, you can see Barenaked Ladies doesn't display properly--- but their neighbor, Band of Horses, displays just fine. It's this inconsistency that really confuses me.

Anyone have any ideas?

You might also want to try combining the batch file for icon cache rebuild with this one... only kill/restart explorer once at the end.

I just installed a new asus p4s533-x mobo. that was a pain because it would not reconize my cd drives. then suddenly they showed up and everything was working fine. now they are not working again. i have tried the jumpers, switching cables, removing the 2nd ide conn. but to no avail. i am wondering if the conn. is bad because the drives show up when i conn. them to the primary channel. i even tried running my hdd to the 2nd channel and it wont show up there either. Is the motherboard bad?

by the way in device manager it shows that the secondry ide channel is working fine.

I have a A floppy, B zip internal drive, C hard drive, D cd rom drive & Internal CD burner. And now there is another drive showing up.
And some times neither one of my cd drives will read.

A:6 Drives are showing up, only have 5

Where is it showing up ? What (exactly) shows up ? What Operating System are you running ? The more details you supply the more likely someone will understand the situation and be able to help you.

hey all- i've googled this issue all over and though i've found many people with the same problem none of their 'fixes' have worked for me not showing Drives up hopefully you guys can come up with something without reinstalling vista again to make it work as a note i'm running Ultimate x and all of my hardware specs are more than enough and i'm pretty positive that's not the issue here's the rundown suddenly in the middle Drives not showing up of normal usage my drives were no longer recognized by my computer optical and virtual drives they do not show up in quot Computer quot or disk management they are recognized by the BIOS i had DaemonTools installed at the time it was the latest version i've read that could be an issue i have absolutely no idea how to get my drives recognized again - i've got some work i really need to get done and haven't been able to fix this when it happened i was using daemontools to mount images for installation and working just fine - this is the closest i can come to a culprit but nothing Drives not showing up i've done with regards to DT has resolved the Drives not showing up issue what i've done reinstalled vista because of this another issue but this just happened again uninstalled daemontools and have since reinstalled rebooted before after in between etc uninstalled devices via device manager rebooted for auto detection etc no luck downloaded latest drivers for optical drive firmware update was all i could find actually - exe won't run because it tries to detect which drive i have first and comes up negative and i'm stumped any ideas

Hi, cyoie, and welcome to the forums.

First off, you have only listed your OS in your system specs section under your UserCP - might want to fill in the rest so we can be sure your specs are adequate.

However, I can say this - I have had no issues using DT for the last ~2 months on Vista Ultimate x64 w/ SP1 - are you running SP1?

If so, what Antimalware software are you using, and did you install DT with the sponsor? There may be a conflict there as your anti-malware may be taking out the sponsor, which in turn may be disabling DT....

I'm working on a machine currently that is running win98SE. I have overlayed the OS on it to fix some Dll errors and I have gone into msconfig and shut off all the unwanted programs.

I go into bios and it shows both of the drives are there, but when the computer boots up neither one of the drives show up under my computer.

I can go into device manager and both of the drives are there but I just cant use them. Its really annoying and I was looking for anyone's info on the matter. Any help would be appreciated thanks.

Check the cabling and jumper settings again....and again. Then try another cable.

Hi Gang

My original Win 7 dumbed on me and I could not recover it so had to do a complete Win 7RC install. Since then I cannot get my 2 DVD drives to show up. There is power to them but when you click on computer only the HD shows up. This Win 7RC install is on a separate computer. My other computer runs XP SP3. If you want to share printers on both computers should you be in Workgroup or Homegroup.?

Any and all help appreciated.

hey gunny
Im an oldtimer so im not that fond of homegroup it seems like whenever I have tried to get xp and win 7 to talk it wasn't in homegroup. As far as your missing dvd's are concerned did you enable them in BIOS as bootible devices?

Hope this points you in the right direction

I have a couple of ATA DVD drives that will not show up with Win 7RC. They show up in the Bios, but when I click on my computer the only thing that shows up is the HD. I have changed the cable, no change. They are getting voltage, the door opens. I know these are good drives.

A:ATA drives not showing up

Go into "disk management" right click "my computer" and click "manage" and see if they are "offline" if so just right click on the DVD and click "online" At least see what the status they are in.

Hey I noticed the last weeks that some icons aren't appearing next to my clock at the bottom right like Windows live messenger and Steam etc, which I only can go now by going back through the start panel. I know how to arrange these icons however right click start and doing that doesn't change it.

I'm running Vista on a new Vaio laptop.

On XP I could right-click a webpage and create a shortcut on the desktop. It would show that site's icon (like the orange 'Z' for jigzone) on the desktop.

For Vista the "unrecognized" icon shows. The title of the webpage shows correctly, and when I ask for a description of the link on the desktop the proper icon (the orange 'Z' for jigzone) shows.

Since I can create the shortcut with the proper icon on my HP running Vista it must be something different on my laptop but I can't find what it is.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi ,

Good day sir! . i got some BIG TIME PROBLEM HERE ..
my desktop ICON is not showing up . Also the ICONS in taskbar , ICONS INSIDE THE FOLDER , MOST IMPORTANTLY THE START - UP BOX .

Hello genhartg,

This may be an association issue. If you like, download and merge the .reg files for the listed EXE and lnk (LNK) options in the tutorial below. They will restore the default associations for these file types, and hopefully fix this for you.

Default File Type Associations - Restore

Hope this helps,

Hi - I have just had a new hard drive put in, and busily customising everything.

I notice that the Microsoft Office Tools are not showing the correct icons - e.g. W for Word etc. they are just a white square with blue top, which could suggest they wouldn't open, but they do. Several other applications are like that namely Adobe, Windows Media, Microsoft Power Point.

Is something missing - have I deleted something - or turned something off ??

I'm having problems viewing the icons on my computer.

What do i mean you say...

We'll i first noticed it in my Favorites in Internet Explorer.(not the drop down Favorites)

I have a bunch of folders there and the little folder icon doesn't show up and neither does the IE icons next to website names.

Other places i have this problem is when i try to create a shortcut to my desktop for an application. None of the items are indicated with a icon next to them.

I hope i made sense. If i didn't reply. i wrote this ina hurry.. have to goto work...

A:Some Icons Not Showing

I had this problem for my desktop since I want to use icons I am familiar with for special shortcuts. My icons are stored in dll libraries that I had to convert to 32bit. I found by accident that when changing icons if you click the "Restore Default" button after selecting your icon, the icon shows on the desktop. Don't know why. haven't had problems with any others yet.

Hi I experienced a weird problem while working on my daughter s Windows laptop last night The little area in the bottom right-hand of the screen forget what it s called normally shows little icons of the main programs that are loaded Keep Icons Showing? How to and running in the background This How to Keep Icons Showing? had been set to always show the icons for our antivirus and antispyware programs even if they did not have active notifications to display Well those icons were showing just fine beforehand but then started acting up How to Keep Icons Showing? after I d uninstalled the free versions of Adaware and Spybot plus then installed the free version of SpywareBlaster and a paid copy of the antispyware add-on extensions for McAfee Enterprise VirusScan How to Keep Icons Showing? i I kept trying to change the icon preferences for the McAfee icon to always show up no matter what but every time I rebotted the computer it would go back to being a hidden icon Changing the preferences to having ALL icons show up all the time does work but that is a bit of an overkill Does anyone have a suggestion as to how I could fix this minor icon display problem Thanks

A:How to Keep Icons Showing?

it might be a setting in the program that overrides the windows command to always show, i would check the settings in that one program that you want to show.
