I am having trouble accessing a partition on an external drive.

Q: I am having trouble accessing a partition on an external drive.

I am having a similar problem where a partition is not accessible and when I click on properties I get a message that recycle bin is corrupted. I have a win7 OEM Home edition and one feature that I do not see is the security tab in Properties that many of you have mentioned as a means to resolve this issue.
Any suggestions are much appreciated.
Thanks in advance for any and all considerations in this matter.

Preferred Solution: I am having trouble accessing a partition on an external drive.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: I am having trouble accessing a partition on an external drive.

I am having trouble accessing a partition on an external drive. Other partitions on that drive are accessible. When I click on properties for that partition, I get an message saying that the recycle bin is corrupted, do i want to empty it? I saw elsewhere in forums that others were having similar problem and that this was recommended as a solution. I downloaded the zip file, followed the instructions and when I click on properties for that partition I still do not get the option of taking ownership.
??????
Will try rebooting to see if that helps. Otherwise any and all consideration in this matter is appreciated.

I was moving some files between my external hard drive and computer, but my cat knocked over the external, causing it to disconnect. I am now having trouble accessing the hard drive. I'm thinking that the hard drive became corrupt (like when it does not get safely removed). I've tried to use Testdisk to try to repair the hard drive, but I keep getting "Partition: Read Error". I cant access the hard drive at all, but it does get detected by the computer. Is the data still salvageable? The drive is a 1TB toshiba external SATA drive.

I have an older 30 GB SATA drive (FAT format) that I use for backups via USB. It works fine when I connect it to my Mac. When I connect it to my XP SP2 computer, device manager shows it's there without any conflict, yet I have no way to access it - there is no icon under My Computer for it.

A:Problem accessing a partition on an external hard drive

the mac part is what got me to my answer, it is because that 900GB partition most likely in format mac os journaled and not seeable by windows at all and never will be it has to be fat 32, NTFS (which a mac can't write too without special drivers), or ExFAT which if you are sure that there is nothing on it then you can delete the whole partition setup of it and format the whole thing to ExFat as that is something mac and windows can read and write too.

I've created a new thread for your issue here.

Hi,

I have a Dell Inspiron with the the new Windows Visa OS. I'm attempting to use my LaCie d2 Hard Drive Extreme (160gb). When i plug it in the computer only partially recognizes it. If I go to "manage" my computer and then storage, the device appears there. it doesn't, however, appear under the My Computer main page (the one with the main internal drive, and the cd/dvd drive...etc.)

Any ideas why the computer isn't allowing me to access the drive? If so, what do i do?

I have a Seagate BUP Slimline 1TB external drive, all was working well, but I think I have pulled it out while it was "reading"

External drive shows in device manager and properties says its working properly

Nothing showing in Explorer or My Computer
Nothing showing in Disk Management

I have tried right clicking it within device manager to try and force it to disable/enable or update driver or uninstall and it just hangs indefinitely.

I have downloaded a couple of data recovery programs but they don't see the drive.

I have plugged the external into my sons desktop and it's not seen there either.

Does anyone know of a fix for this? or have I rendered it useless?

Any help would be much appreciated.

A:Help accessing external hard drive

Hi @3billy3!

Since the drive appears in Device Manager you can try to boot with Linux Live CD and see if you can access the data stored on it. In order to do that just follow these steps:

1. Download/burn the ISO image to a CD or USB.
2. Change the boot order to the media you burned the Linux on.
3. Once it loads, you could try and mount the drive (or if Linux can read it, it will mount by itself) and see if it is recognized. In case it is - transfer the data.

Once the information is stored on another location you can run a diagnostic test on the external with the manufacturer tool and see if anything wrong will be detected. In case there is you can RMA it back and get a replacement unit if it's still under warranty.

Hope this helps and let me know how it went. Feel free to upload some screenshots as well so I can take a look.

I took some video with my Sony Handycam and imported it onto my external hard drive with my desktop computer. This desktop uses Vista home premium 64 bit OS.

Now when I connect my external hard drive to an older computer, I can only hear the audio with Windows Media Player but cannot see the video.

Is there something I have to do to my older, Windows XP computer to be able to view this or is that impossible since it was imported with a 64bit pc?

So I have a 75 gig firewire drive (Ganite FireVue 1394-IDE Bridge LUN0 IEEE 1394 SBP2 Device) that I used for video capturing with Mac computers. I would now like to use it on my PC.

The hardware manager shows that both my Firewire card and my drive are working properly and have updated drivers.

However, I have no idea how to access the drive! I thought it would appear in My Computer like a plug and play device would. But this is not the case.

It shows up in the Disk Management as the following:
"Disk 2: Unknown 71.59 GB Online" and "71.59 GB Unallocated". It has that little minus sign in a red circle on top of the icon. But I never used disk management, nor if I should. There are some files on the drive.

Enough babble! Can you help me get at my drive?

No problem as long as the drivers for the drive are always loaded before the programs from it.
Any program can be installed to a different drive - it is an option on the program install.

A:External Hard Drive (Clickfree) Having Problems Accessing

Do not initiate or format the drive for any reason unless you can back up all the data on it.

Lesson learned: Do not install the "bloat-ware" that comes with these external drives. W7 can handle all of the functions in this redundant software. And if you were to be unhappy with Windows functionality, there are much better, stand alone programs that you could use instead.
Can you see your data on the drive when looking in Windows Explorer?
With the drive connected, could you post a screenshot of the Disk Management screen here?
Do you recall the software doing a backup during or after you installed it?

A problem has been plaguing me for some time now. I use a Western Digital MyWorld NAS 2Tb drive, set to Raid 1 with 1Tb live and 1Tb mirrored. When accessing the NAS drive with this machine I am able to explore the drive and its content and all directories. However, each time a modification is attempted, such as renaming a file or directory, or moving a directory or file to another location, the PC does a hard dump and crashes. I have spent hours with Western Digital on the phone. We have shut down all services and start up items using msconfig. All to no avail. Please help.

If it's pre-configured, then I'd suspect an issue with the hardware of the external drive. If it's your caddy, then I'd suggest checking the jumper settings on the hard drive to ensure that they're correctly set.

Hello I've been having a problem with my Lacie TB external HDD for some time now I'll just precise that it's a USB disk and has an on off switch I apologize if the post is long but I'm gonna put in everything I can think of The disk worked fine for a few months then at one point it started hard clicking and soon after I external when drive. freezes Windows accessing explorer hard was unable to transfer any data in or out of the disk without causing the transfer to hang after about s I sent it back to Windows explorer freezes when accessing external hard drive. Lacie for repair and Windows explorer freezes when accessing external hard drive. long story short after they quot lost quot my disk they sent me a brand new one but apparently the repair centre wasn't informed so I received my old disk too repaired So I now have similar HDDs My problem is - at first when I tried to run the format tool preloaded on Windows explorer freezes when accessing external hard drive. the disk to format the disk before use it hanged and the progress bar didn't move The only way to close the window was to shut down the disk That happened on both disks and they were then listed as RAW in disk manager - I tried to format or delete the volume using window's built in tool but when I select my format options and click ok it just gets back to the disk manager with the hourglass mouse pointer as if it's doing something although there is no progress bar or anything It just stays there for hours although it should be super fast as the disk is empty I tried different softwares like partition magic but they just hang on quot detecting devices quot as soon as I turn the disk on Same thing for disk manager if I open it after having turned on the disk it just hangs on quot connecting to virtual service quot Again same with both disks - I then tried to format the disks using my dad's xp laptop and the software Partition Wizard and it formated both disks into NTFS in seconds That leads me to believe that the fault comes from my laptop I partitioned one of the disks with GB of FAT and the rest in NTFS to see if it would change anything on my laptop - For both disks and both NTFS and FAT when I try accessing them from quot Computer quot I sometimes can get in the disk folder but when I try to copy a file in it the tranfer bar just stalls on quot transferring file quot without even starting the transfer If I try clicking somewhere the transfer windows blanks out and freezes followed by the quot Computer quot window then windows explorer itself If I turn off the disk then everything returns back to normal Sometimes just trying to access the disk folder freezes everything and that can affect wmp or any other program open they just freeze until the disk is turned off This happens every time Not finished - At one point it kinda started working if I had the little software Lacie USB Boost activated which is supposed to boost your transfer speed Here's a copy of what I sent Lacie I spent months with the support team and I'm not closer to resolving that They replied to this post by saying that there is no known issue with the usb boost quot If the USB Boost is activated I can now transfer files to the disk however I get the exact same error message xd as the one I described in my very first post if I try to transfer large files to the disk although it did that for a Mb file This problem is the same as the one experienced by this person BSOD when transfering Large files to external HD He has the same disk as me and it was suggested that he uninstalled the USB boost or changed the extension of the FNETURPX sys to make it unusable I did that which brings me to the nd problem If I do disable the USB Boost I revert back to the message saying that the file is no longer in its folder and I can't create a new folder on the disk either I have tried to reenable the usb boost and transferring works again but for large files I get the stop error message again quot I have now uninstalle... Hi all,
I recently bought a WD My Book Essential Edition external hard drive and wanted to change it from FAT32 to NTFS. I was following instructions given on WDs website, however the directions weren't entirely clear (of course only noticed after the fact). I right clicked on My Computer, clicked manage and used Disk Manager. The instructions said to find the drive, right click on it and click delete partition. It didn't mention however, to do that with bottom part of the screen and not the top. So, I think I just deleted the logical drive.

It shows up on the device manager and the "Safely Remove Hardware" window, but the drive letter no longer shows up under My Computer.

Is there a way to fix this? Or did I just buy a $120 paper weight?

Thanks,

PaveFE

A friend of mine gave me his external hard drive with the hopes that I might be able to fix it.

It's a new external Western Digital that is 2TB in size and he purchased it within the last 2 or 3 months. I don't know what he did, but it wouldn't surprise me if he pulled the USB cord without properly unmounting the drive and something with his filesystem became corrupted. I don't know how to repair this.

The drive will show you a drive letter when you attach it to Windows, and using a partition manager (in Linux) shows the drive to contain an "unknown" partition type. In Windows, running "chkdsk e: /x /r" returns an error that says "chkdsk is not available for RAW drives".

Anyone know of a reliable (and preferably free) utility that might be able to repair this kind of problem quickly?

A:External hard drive NTFS partition missing; chkdsk says it's a "RAW" partition now

Is this a data recovery operation? Should be able to just format again if not.

Otherwise testdisk (http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk) might be useful to recover the partition info.

A:USB to IDE for external drive trouble

Stay away from no-name cheap ones. Vantec is a good brand, for example.

No, you don't need a driver. XP has it. Just plug it in and XP either auto installs driver or asks you, just leave it as default, press Enter. In order to use the drive, you need to format it. The best way would be format it when connected to IDE in PC BEFORE moving out. My friend does it this way. No prob so far.

Is this possible?

If yes, what software do you recommend? Any freeware options?

Thanks,

A:Partition external hard drive

should be doable using the XP disk mgr -- did you try it?

btw: 120/6 parts = (6x) 20gb partitions; why so small?

Also consider: An external HD can be used by other systems,
even Mac and Linux *IF* you plan ahead now -- format as FAT32

I have been using a Western Digital external drive with their SmartWare program and haven't been very impressed. Therefore, I uninstalled the SmartWare program from my mac and then used Disk Utilities to partition the drive. Initially it seemed to be successful. Two separate volumes appeared and I was able to use Time Machine to do a full back up of my mac to one of the volumes. However, when I connected the WD drive to my mac today, all I saw was a single volume named WD SmartWare (with some SmartWare files -no personal files at all) and it appears that what I did before was completed gone. How can I delete/uninstall/eliminate the SmartWare from the external drive and partition the drive? Thanks!

A:Partition WD external drive didn't take

You should be able to access the HDD using WD tools. At which point delete ALL partitions, then create the new partitions and format.

Hello,
I connected my existing external HDD (@USB2.0) to a new PC with Win 8.1. From the beginning all partitions mounted properly and were accessible as expected but later suddenly the first partition was not accessible due to insufficiant access rights. All other partitions keep being accessible except this one. I wonder how this could happen, especially when it's a FAT32 format partition (no eser-level security support) The exact errors I'm receiving are these:

Currently you don't have permissions to access this folder.
For obtaining permanent access to this folder, click on the option Continue.

If I click Continue I get this warning:

Permission to access this folder was denied.
For obtaining access to this folder, you'll have to use security tab.

If I click the Security tab link, I get properties dialog for that partition opened, however no Security tab is available (oviously, this is a FAT32 volume)

I would appreciate an soulution how to reenable access to this drive.

I take it you mean it doesn't show in Explorer?

When you go to diskmanagement, do you see it there?

Probably it doesn't have a driveletter under Win7, so you'll have to add it.

Hello, so... the question is this:

Can I make a partition of my laptops' HDD work as an external drive.
So that when I connect a USB cable to my laptop, then connect the other end of the USB cable to another PC/laptop this other PC/laptop than thinks that an external HDD is connected to it...

I'm assuming I would need some sort of software to specify which partition I want to be recognized as the external HDD and then possibly specify which USB port to use...?

Or not necessarily a partition, just any specific folder would work as well...

So... help... please... So far I haven't found any answers googling.

A:Make HDD partition as a USB external drive

Not clear on your problem;

When I connect a USB tumbdrive to my Laptop it shows up as a regular Mapped Drive.

In fact, when I take it elsewhere, that happens also.

It is not related to the HDD on the laptop at all (is that what you're after; making the USB actually mirror datafrom your HDD?)

Howdy. I have a Mac Mini with an internal hard drive partitioned with Bootcamp for a Mac side and an XP side. It is so full I can't run the SP3 upgrade (lots of photos). I need to add an external HD to store the photos - like in the 1TB range - and although I will use it almost entirely with XP Pro, I do want a small part of it for the mac stuff. It'd be a USB 2.0hookup.
I think I can just do this with Bootcamp, but the WinXP side is more important to me, so I'd like the opinion of you WinXP guys first. Any suggestions?

Hello,

I have windows 7 home premium 32 bit. I got a new WD Elements 2.5 TB external hard drive. The laptop detected it perfectly and it showed about ~2.25 TB space. The problem came when I tried to partition it into two partition, one 1.75 TB and other ~500 GB. I tried windows 7 data management. When I shrunk the volume to make first 1.7 TB partition it made it correctly but it created two ~250 GB un-allocated partitions. Then I created one partition from first un-allocated space and tried to extend it but it is not giving me an option to extend it. Also it is not allowing me to create another partition from remaining ~250 GB partition.

I tried EASEUS partition manager but it shows whole external hard drive as unsupported.

Can anyone help me with it please?

A:External hard drive in trouble

someone once told me, and no i tell others that the 1TB drives are very unreliable and shouldnt be used for storing anything of value...

Time after time ive heard from friends and collegues who have come across this and feel sorry, after all companies make them as nothing more than a selling point, when in fact you could buy 2 lots of 500gb drives and be a lot safer.

Its sad to say but your data has to all intents gone west...and may not be recoverable, that said, you could direct mount the drive into a tower pc and use a good quality file restorer to try and get them back..

if you do, dont use a 1 TB drive again will you.

I have a Seagate FreeAgent 500GB USB external hard drive. The trouble is, a friend gave me the hard drive to get some video files off of it, I plug it into my computer, I partitioned it and it shows up in my computer, but when I try to open it, it tells me I have to format it before I can use it...

This is bad because I NEED the files on the hard drive, so is there any way that I can open this hard drive WITHOUT formatting it??

And I think the person that used it before me used it on a mac, I know that is probably the problem, but if there is anyway I can get the video files off the hard drive with out reformatting it before I open that would be great.

A:Can I create a partition in a (used) external hard drive?

Yes indeed. If you don't have an internal hard drive portable case, just power off your computer, hold the power button in for a minute to discharge all electricity, open the case, plug the older hard drive into the IDE or SATA cable for a secondary hard drive, (keep the case open to watch all fans), plug in the power cable, press the power button. The system will see the old hard drive and assign it a driver and may want to reboot; that's OK. Now after reboot, go to Windows Manager (Right click computer, choose Manage). Choose Disk Management, point at the older hard drive, right click your mouse and choose Format. When prompted, choose NTFS and format the entire disk. When it's done.....voila! You now have a second internal hard drive that you can use for backing up an Image of your C: Drive (Highly Recommended) and for storing all kinds of files like music, videos etc. rather than keeping them on the C: Drive and filling it up. A:Backing up to External Hard drive - do i need to partition?

I will assume you are talking about Windows imaging as opposed to file/folder backup.
In one partition root Windows will recognize an image folder called WindowsImageBackup. If you create another partition you could have another WindowsImageBackup. Alternatively, you can rename or move (within a partition) WindowsImageBackup to a different folder. As long as what you move and/or rename to WindowsImageBackup in a partition root, a Windows system repair disk boot should recognze it. See these tutorials
Backup Complete Computer - Create an Image Backup
System Image Recovery
Many people prefer this third party imaging program which is more flexible
Macrium Reflect FREE Edition - Information and download
I use both.

A system image restore will restore everything you need. It is a snapshot of when you made it. You can even restore it to a new HDD if your current one fails.

Re Ubuntu dual boot it sounds like you are booting Windows through the Ubuntu HDD = bad idea.

Hello, I have a problem resizing NTFS partitions on my external hard drive. First I tried to shrink one of the partitions using the Disk Manager utility in Windows 7 (I thought that I can resize the other one to the unallocated space using the 'expand' functionality), and later also tried EASEUS Partition Master. Both seem to have trouble with the first step, which is reduction of the space on the first partition (700 GB -> 250 GB), as both programs simply get stuck. (I let it run for 4 hours before giving up). I also tried runnig checkdisk to see if some sectors of the partition are not damaged, but it didn't help. I would really appreciate any hint as to how to solve this problem, or a recommendation about which alternative software to try. Thank you.

A:Solved: External Hard Drive - Should I Partition?

For the most part, unless you have an organizational need or desire for partitioning, one big partition is fine. I did have one situation where I had to partition a 1.5 TB drive into 500 GB each but that was because the networked media player I use could only see partitions of 500 GB or less.

I recently purchased a 3TB external hard drive. While using the disk management tool in Windows I created unallocated space intended to be used for a partition. The system wouldn't allow me to create the partition continually showing an error message that MBR drives are limited to the first 2TB of space available. My question is two fold: How do I return the unallocated space to the primary partition on the disk? How do I then add the secondary partition?

The BIOS in Dell laptop's doesn't usually give you a lot of options so it might not be possible to boot from USB. Presumably you'll be looking to replace the internal hard drive with a working one? If so, you could use a different system to clone the content of your external hard drive to the new internal one and then plug it into your Dell.

Last night during the shut down process a message popped up telling me that a certain file was corrupt and that I should run CHKDSK. I should have made a note of the name of the file, but I didn't. It was a gibberish name that may have started with "m$".

Today, I find that my external hard drive (a Maxtor One Touch III) is inaccessible. When I try to access it through Windows Explorer, I get the following message: "F:\ is inaccessible. The disk structure is corrupted and unreadable."

I ran CHKDSK. At the beginning, it gave me the following message: "Warning! F parameter not specified. Running CHKDSK in read-only mode." It claimed to fix some things at the end of step 2, but it didn't help.

Device Manager thinks that the device is running properly.

I rebooted the machine but that didn't help either.

Any ideas?

I had a new desktop PC in August this year. Prior to that Seagate was connected to my laptop and working well, quietly in the background. However, I've now found that on the new PC it isn't backing up my files. I have a new Windows 8.1 PC and an even newer WD My Book Essential External Hard Drive. I often find it difficult to eject the latter from my computer. Just now, for example, I tried to eject it and received the message ?This device is currently in use. Close any programs or windows that might be using the device and then try again.? The trouble is, there don't seem to be any programs active, and indeed task manager showed ?There are no running apps.? After some online research I downloaded Microsoft's Process Explorer and searched for the external drive but this showed simply ?0 matching items.? Can anyone suggest what the problem could be, please?

A:Trouble ejecting WD external hard drive

Hi curt jugg!
It's a very peculiar problem you have. Generally, if you're using the Safely remove hardware option you shouldn't have any concerns.
This is Window's built in safely eject solution. But sometimes it's possible that it will tell you that it's not safe or that this device is currently in use. It won't tell you which application's using the device which makes it a lot harder to fix. Though, you could guess and try a few things.
Close every Windows Explorer windows and every program that may be using a file from the external device. This includes the antivirus and any applications on the Taskbar. Then safely eject.
Check if you have Indexing turned off on your drive by right clicking on it and choosing Properties. If it's on, turn it off, see if that works.
You could also shut down the PC completely, or log off and then log on, and after it eject the drive. But this takes more time and can be quite annoying. But sometimes such an error is just a temporary glitch occurring perhaps with no important reason and the restart/log off option is the best approach.
If none of this works for you, you could follow the advices for a third party software from this Microsoft article:
Problem Ejecting USB Mass Storage Device
I hope I've helped!
Cheers and best of luck!

Hi,

Sorry if this has been treated somewhere else, but I cannot find a suitable answer anywhere. I have a used trascend external HD and am trying to partition it to make it NTFS so that I can create and store on it the system image of my computer.

I have plenty of free space, but when I right click on it, in Windows Disk Management, the option 'shrink volume' is greyed out and am not able to partition the drive .

I do not want to format the whole drive as I've got an older version of Windows that might not recognise the files (am I correct in thinking this?).

Any advice really appreciated

Thanks,

Lucia

Can you please post a screenshot from Diskmgmt.msc, maximized and with columns spread so the text contents in each column are readable in the screenshot.

Once you post this screenshot, we can recommend a proper course of action or suggest a possible "recipe" that might work, or maybe ask more questions.
As an excellent alternative to Windows Disk Management, I suggest you try Partition Wizard... either standalone boot CD or using the installed program under Win7. PW should have no problem dealing with this drive, and being able to resize partitions, format partitions to NTFS, or if necessary being able to "delete all partitions" and then you can "create partition" and format to NTFS, etc.

Partition Wizard can be used to do anything Diskmgmt can do, and more. It also has a standalone boot CD which can be used for more significant drive/partition work... involving the OS's C-partition... which cannot be completed while actually running under Windows but which must be done at re-boot time (or using the standalone boot CD for PW).

You can get [free] Partition Wizard Home Edition v5.2 from here.

You can download the ISO for the standalone boot CD from here, and then use something like [free] IMGBURN (which you can get from here) to burn the ISO to CD.

I want to merge the 2 partition(F and G drive)
And How can i recover the Lenovo Softwares if the OEM Reserved is on the External Hard Drive.

My External Hard Drive is the Hard Drive of my laptop before.

A:How to merge partition and use the OEM reserved on External Hard Drive

First you want to back up all of your data. Never play with partitions without doing this first.

The OEM partition could be imaged (using disk imaging software) to back it up and save it, but I wonder if it would work from an external drive? It would have been better to use the utility to burn recovery CDs of that partition while it was still in the laptop.

Then, to make this easy, you want to get a copy of Partition Wizard for bootable CD. (This is because Windows Disk management will only work to the right, it won't expand partitions to the left).

Using Partition Wizard you will delete Test F: and then expand H: to the left into that now unallocated space.
Since it is only 199MB you could just stop there. But if you wanted to add that to G: you could.

Ok here s the deal I ve just purchased an Acomdata GB external hard drive It comes preformated with TWO partitions - one is the CD Section which takes just something like that MB and is used to house installation files for applications having to do with the HD and the other one is the HD Section which is the whole HD minus the previous MB The CD Section partition is according to Acomdata impossible to delete or alter This initially annoyed me but I m basically ok with it as long as I can format partition the rest of the HD Magic And External 8 Partition Acomdata Hard Drive however I want Now both of the initial partitions are FAT and that s where the real problem lies I want to split the HD Section partition into two partitions with one being about GB NTFS and the other being the rest of the space FAT I need the NTFS partition so that I can transfer files bigger than GB which can t be done Partition Magic 8 And Acomdata External Hard Drive on FAT and I need the FAT partition so that I can still transfer files between a PC and a Mac So I started up Partitionmagic so that I could reformat partition the Partition Magic 8 And Acomdata External Hard Drive external hard drive the way I Partition Magic 8 And Acomdata External Hard Drive wanted it but where the information for the external hard drive is supposed to be in partitionmagic it just says Bad If I try to create a new partition or re-format the exisiting partition or anything else having to do with that drive I get error messages What s the deal nbsp

A:Partition Magic 8 And Acomdata External Hard Drive

You may have to go into Windows Disk Management and cleanup the whole disk, then use PM to format the larger FAT32 partition. I suspect the "CD Section" is done with non-standard formatting and/or partitioning, and is the issue here.

If that doesn't work, I'd take the drive out of the enclosure and run a disk ZAPPER on it, then partition and format it.

Hard drive: WD Caviar GP WD7500AAVS-00D7B0
Enclosure says WD Elements on barcode
Capacity: 750 GB

Windows Vista Home Premium
2 GB RAM
AMD Athlon 64 Dual Core Processor (1.8GHz, 2x256 KB L2 cache)

Windows asks to reformat it.
TestDisk ran into an error partway through a deep scan.
Partition Table Doctor says total number of sectors on harddisk 1, partition 1 is 292096000. Correct number is 292109895. Offers to correct it.

And thank you to everyone who aided me in my previous 'help me' thread.

A:Want to fix external hard drive with partition table\MBR issue.

I've had some issues with 2 different Western Digital MyBook external drives where Windows offers to reformat it.

I ripped the case open and removed the hard drive. Then hooked it up with my USB slave device and everything was OK. I'm starting to suspect that there's a problem with the circuitry in the casing that causes this.

I would suggest removing the hard drive from the casing (if it's out of warranty) to see if you can recover the data that way. If it's still in warranty, I'd suggest contacting Western Digital to see what can be done to recovery your data before getting it repaired/replaced under warranty.

Hi

I've taken a 1TB SATA HDD from a second computer which had Windows 7 OS on it. I have housed it in an external caddy to use as a backup drive for my primary computer. It comes up as two paritions G and H. I've formatted G to give me a 931Gb drive and I have a H drive with 99.9MB which is the System Reserved from the previous Windows 7 install.

Can I format the System Reserved partition on the external drive and combine the two partitions to create one external backup HDD?? If I need software tools to do this are there any freeware tools that would do this?

Thanks
Mike

A:Remove System Reserved partition from external drive

I want to reformat an existing external HD for backup. Currently it has 3 partitions:
1 x Primary NTFS; 1 x Free Space; 1 x Logical NTFS.
Can someone please advise how to reformat this into a single NTFS partition? I'm running Win7.

A:How do I Reformat Multi Partition External Hard Drive

If there's no data on the drive that needs to be saved, just go into Disk Management and remove the partitions, until you have a blank, unallocated drive. Then create a new, solid partition for the entire drive.

I don't mess with extended and logical partitions, but you may have to delete the logical first, then the primary.

A:invalid extended partition and bad sectors on external drive

That drive failed the Western Digital diagnostic test with too many bad sectors. Some of the tests passed run from the Ultimate boot CD for windows, but it may develop more bad sectors so I most likely do need a new hard drive.
