Unable to start - black screen or empty blue screen w cursor??

Q: Unable to start - black screen or empty blue screen w cursor??

Hello,

My laptop will not boot. I end up with an empty black screen or a blue screen with no icons, just a cursor. I get choices for 'normal startup' or ' repair' but not safe mode. Any help appreciated.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Windows appears to load normally until reaching the logon screen at which point 2 quick cmd windows flash on the screen and i'm left with a cursor and a plain blue screen.

No access to task manager through ctrl+alt+del.

I was thinking it's a video card problem until i plugged in an external monitor and saw a windows error box pop up saying that the program running requires that you not be on battery power.

Pulled the drive and scanned with avast and malwarebytes which found nothing.

Inserted Vista DVD but the repair function is only able to find the HP Restore partition and is unable to locate any backups.

The system runs "mini XP" from Hirens Boot without a problem, but no diagnostics that i ran have been able to find any issues...

Ideas?

I received the following error message when I attempted to restart my computer:

C0000218 Unknown Hard Error

When I restarted after the blue screen it went into a check disk but would not finish the scan.

I have tried to start the computer in safe mode with internet connection and after a few minutes the screen goes black. I've tried to start it using last known configuration and the screen goes black. Everything I try ~ the screen goes black.

Help!!!!

A:Blue screen & now won't start in safe mode, screen goes black

I'm writing from my husband's laptop because my desktop is completely dead.

We were out of town for several days and when we returned my desktop was running very slow so I attempted to restart it. It locked up, I pressed/held the power button and when it restarted it attempted to run a disk check. The disk check locked up and I had to press/hold the power button again. When it restarted I got a blue screen ~ stop: C0000218 unknown hard error.

Sometimes when I attempt to restart it I get: checking file system on C:
file system = NTFS

When I attempt to restart it in safe mode, safe mode with networking or starting in last known good configuration I get . . .

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\windows\appPatch\drvmain.sdb
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\windows\system32\drivers\ . . . (various items)

Now it won't start, not even in safe mode. Everything I try ~ I just get a black screen.

** I just tried to restart AGAIN and it ran disk scan, said it had completed disk scan and would restart, the screen went black when it attempted to restart and the screen is still black and it won't restart.

What can I do to get my computer back?

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

A:Black screen with Cursor upon start up

Something you can try, go into My Computer, right click your C: drive (assuming that's where the OS is installed), select Properties, Tools tab, hit Check Now under error checking, select both check boxes, and hit start. You will get a message stating the drive is in use, do you want to schedule it the next time your computer is restarted and select yes. Then restart the computer and let it do its thing.

If that doesn't work, try using an XP disk to run a repair from it...(I did see you didn't have any disks, see what they would cost from the manufacturer, Asus)

In MSCONFIG, did you disable everything unnecessary to load on boot...like all the updaters, and other third party software?

A:Black Screen with cursor on start up

Just to be clear: where in the startup sequence does the black screen occur and delay?
The instant you turn it on?
A second or 2 after you turn it on but before the "Starting Windows" screen would normally come on?
Or after the "Starting Windows" screen.
Do the fans in the laptop run louder while this is occurring?
Is anything other than the HDD light blinking?
Is the HDD light blinking?

A:Unable to boot into windows 7 Black screen + blinking cursor

Instructions for a Windows 7 Repair installation.

A Windows 7 Repair Installation will require a installation disc.

If you do not have a Windows 7 installation disc you can download a free legal ISO image of Windows 7 SP1 at  Windows 7 Forums.  You will need to download the same version of Windows 7 that you have installed,  This image is hosted by the Digital River store which is an official distribution partner of Microsoft.  This is a genuine untouched image which is safe to download.

Attention:  If you do have a Windows installation disc, skip Part A and go to Part B, Step 1b.

Part A, Steps 1a - 6a

The ISO image will need to be burned to a DVD in order to create a bootable installation disc.

1a)  To burn a ISO file to a DVD please download ImgBurn and install it.

2a)  Insert a blank DVD into your CD/DVD drive tray, and then close the tray.

3a)  Open ImgBurn, and click on Write image file to disc.

4a)  Click on the Browse for a file icon:

5a)  Locate the ISO file you want to burn, and click on the Open button.

6a)  Click on the blue arrow to start burning the bootable DVD.

Please note:  In order to boot from this DVD you may need to change the boot order in the BIOS so that the CD/DVD-ROM is the first device in the boot order, and the hdd is the second device.

Part B, Steps 1b - 10b

1b)  Place the installation disc in the tray of the CD/DVD drive, close the tray and restart the computer.

2b)  You will be prompted to press any key to start the installation, I find the space bar handy.

At this point the setup process will load files, this will take several minutes.

3b)  You will now need to choose the  Language, Time, currency format, and Keyboard or input method that you'd like to use.

After this is done click on Next.

4b)  Click on the Repair your computer link at the bottom-left of the Install Windows window.

This link will begin the Windows 7 System Recovery Options.

5b)  System Recovery Options will now search your hard drive(s) for any Windows 7 installations.  This will take several minutes.

No participation is required on your part at this time, wait till it has finished and the next window opens.

6b)  Choose the Windows 7 installation that you'd like to perform the Startup Repair on, then click on Next

7b)  Click on the Startup Repair link from list of recovery tools in System Recovery Options.

For a future reference, there are several other diagnostic and recovery tools available in the Windows 7 System Recovery Options including System Restore, System Image Recovery, Windows Memory Diagnostic, and Command Prompt.

8b)  The Startup Repair tool will now search for problems in the system files.

If Startup Repair finds a problem with any system files the tool may suggest a solution which you will need to confirm, or may solve the problem automatically.

9b)  Startup Repair will now attempt to repair whatever problems it found with system files.

Note:  If Startup Repair did not find any problems with system files you won't see this step.

Important: Your computer may or may not restart several times during this repair process.  This is normal, you should allow it to continue until you see the Restart your computer to complete the repairs window.

10b)  Click on Finish, this will restart your computer.

It is possible that the Startup Repair will not be able to fix the problem.  If the Startup Repair tool determines this, it may automatically run the the repair after your computer restarts.  If it does not automatically run the repair b... Read more

Hi, I have a dell inspiron 1525 labtop. It was working fine, ran some updates then on the reboot it would not go past the post. The screen turns black with a blinking cursor at the top.
I tried unplugging everything, rebooting by taking out battery, and holding down power button.
The only menus I get are F2 and F 12, no F8.
I tried rearranging the boot order, I changed the Ram around I tried each by themselves.
I have a reinstallation cd, the repair did not work and I wasnt sure about completly redoing the installation.
It wouldnt let me put in a new partition.
I would appreciate any advice!!!!!
Thanks, Lisa

You may want to try to do a repair installation with your discs. Directions can be found at http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tuto...torial148.html
If you do not have your CD's you may also try pressing F8 upon startup until you receive the boot-menu where you can select Repair Computer and once in their you may be able to try the repair option. You can also try c: chckdsk /f in the command prompt under that screen.
If all else fails you may need to contact your manufacture about hard drive issues.

Do you have another user account you can try logging in with?

If you don't log in as administrator normally, at the log in screen type administrator and your admin password. If you have the login screen that shows icons, press cntrl+alt+del twice and the standard log in window will appear.

It's possible that an application is attempting to load at start up that cannot complete and keeps the computer from finishing it's boot up. Another user profile might not have this same issue.

If you have another account to sign in with, give it a shot and let us know.

If the hard drive has failed (which seems likely) there is no fix for that other than buying a new one.
You can test the drive with the manufacturer's own diagnostic software. The links are at top of this page:

A:Black Screen With Cursor WINDOWS 10 COLD START

"Whenever I start my PC from a cold start it sometimes gets stuck on a black screen"You lost me there. Does it do it every time you start from cold or just sometimes? It will be more easy to diagnose if it is not intermittent.A good start is to use Clean Boot to see if you can work out what is causing it: http://winaero.com/blog/how-to-perf...Also see if it does it in Safe Mode (see link on page).Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanksmessage edited by Derek

Hello all I am in dire need of assistance and any help is most welcome I am running a Sony Vaio with Intel Core Duo GHz processor and Windows XP SP Media Center The computer boots with the Windows splash loading screen as normal afterwards when it would normally show the desktop I am left with a black screen with the cursor in the middle not blinking I have control of the cursor but can t do anything else Ctrl Alt Del does nothing black won't Windows movable screen start; XP cursor w/ and pressing Shift times does nothing I have attempted the normal system restore booting in Safe Mode Safe Mode with networking and Safe Mode with Command prompt All of these result in the same black screen with cursor control I am not aware of any viruses that might be on the machine I regularly run SuperAntispyware Malwarebytes and virus scans with Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition None of them detected anything earlier in the day prior to the problem However Firefox had frozen up an unusual number of times yesterday When it froze I noticed that there was always an advertisement on the site that didn t load properly so I attributed it to that Also the night before I received a Cicerouiwndframe not responding error on shutdown but that is not particularly unusual as I have seen it before though not recently Windows XP won't start; black screen w/ movable cursor Further I noticed yesterday that my computer was having trouble recognizing my printer in one of the USB ports but when I switched to one of the other ports it worked fine In trying to resolve this issue I have disconnected all auxiliary hardware mouse wireless adapter printer but this produced little effect Once I get to the black screen with cursor the only way for me to turn the computer off is to disconnect the power cord the back of the computer and remove the laptop battery Pressing the power button does nothing I was working in Excel last night with a couple of Firefox windows open when the computer suddenly froze up Today I m left with the black screen and cursor There are some important files that I need to retrieve from the hard drive so at the very least some help in accomplishing that would be most appreciated I don t have an original Windows XP Media Center Edition disc since the computer never came with one Apparently Sony includes a recovery kit as a special partition on the hard drive but it s not clear what this recovery will do or if it would allow me to use the Windows XP Media Center repair function that would be found on an original Microsoft disc nbsp

A:Windows XP won't start; black screen w/ movable cursor

The only time I ever used that recovery option on a Vaio, it performed a destructive return to factory settings with no further warning so I recommend leaving that one alone for the time being. Tap F8 to bring the Safe Mode menu up and try the option for VGA settings, which might just let your graphics card show with reduced functions. If you can get in that way, try updating the drivers for the graphics in Device Manager.

As for getting the files out, you could Google for Hirens BootCD and download that, burn it to a disk and use MiniXP to gain access to your files and move them to memory sticks of an external hard drive. Using MiniXP would also tell you if the graphics are working but that your own system lacks some files or settings somewhere.

Hello. I have a Toshiba Satellite C655-S5132 and it started with a virus in my svchost.exe file. Now my screen goes from the Toshiba logo at the beginning to a black screen with a blinking cursor. I I tried System Restore but it said it could not be performed, no matter what date i choose because of a damaged/missing file. I tried Toshiba Recovery Wizard and it asks me to put in the last cd of a Toshiba Recovery cd set, and I dont have one. I do have a bootup disk but it still is not solving the problem. How do i reset it back to Factory settings?

I've tried rebooting a multitude of times; it actually worked once, then crashed after about an hour...

Did the Memory test: checked out OK

Put my Vista DVD in to do a windows repair. Once it said it was done, but it didn't fix the problem. Another time it said it attempted to do a "start-up repair" but didn't work.

Tried a system restore, but to no avail...

Vista is a POS! Paid a bunch of money to have XP put back on my laptop. Now my desktop is acting up. Yeah I know, I should only put it on a dual-core processor (my desktop in a hyperthreading 800mhz FSB 2.8 P4 with 1GB RAM).

HELP!

Bob

Hi there,my name is Marius and I will assist you with your malware related problems. Before we move on, please read the following points carefully. First, read my instructions completely. If there is anything that you do not understand kindly ask before proceeding. Perform everything in the correct order. Sometimes one step requires the previous one. If you have any problems while following my instructions, Stop there and tell me the exact nature of your problem. Do not run any other scans without instruction or add/remove software unless I tell you to do so. This would change the output of our tools and could be confusing for me. Post all logfiles as a reply rather than as an attachment unless I specifically ask you. If you can not post all logfiles in one reply, feel free to use more posts. If I don't hear from you within 3 days from this initial or any subsequent post, then this thread will be closed. Stay with me. I will give you some advice about prevention after the cleanup process. Absence of symptoms does not always mean the computer is clean. My first language is not english. So please do not use slang or idioms. It could be hard for me to read. Greetings anhunt and to BleepingComputer's Virus/Trojan/Spyware/Malware Removal forum. My name is Oh My! and I am here to help you! Now that we are "friends" please call me Gary.If you would allow me to call you by your first name I would prefer to do that. ===================================================Ground Rules:First, I would like to inform you that most of us here at Bleeping Computer offer our expert assistance out of the goodness of our hearts. Please try to match our commitment to you with your patience toward us. If this was easy we would never have met. Please do not run any tools or take any steps other than those I will provide for you while we work on your computer together. I need to be certain about the state of your computer in order to provide appropriate and effective steps for you to take. Most often "well intentioned" (and usually panic driven!) independent efforts can make things much worse for both of us. If at any point you would prefer to take your own steps please let me know, I will not be offended. I would be happy to focus on the many others who are waiting in line for assistance. Please perform all steps in the order they are listed in each set of instructions. Some steps may be a bit complicated. If things are not clear, be sure to stop and let me know. We need to work on this together with confidence. Please copy and paste all logs into your post unless directed otherwise. Please do not re-run any programs I suggest. If you encounter problems simply stop and tell me about it.When you post your reply, do not use the button but use the button instead. In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see the button. Click on this then choose Immediate E-Mail notification and then Proceed and you will be sent an email once I have posted a response. If you do not reply to your topic after 5 days we assume it has been abandoned and I will close it.When your computer is clean I will alert you of such. I will also provide for you detailed information about how you can combat future infections.I would like to remind you to make no further changes to your computer unless I direct you to do so.Now let's get started ===================================================Now that I am assisting you, you can expect that I will be very responsive to your situation. If you are able, I would request you check this thread at least once per day so that we can try to resolve your issues effectively and efficiently. If you are going to be delayed please be considerate and post that information so that I know you are still with me. Unfortunately, there are many people waiting to be assisted and not enough of us at BleepingComputer to go around. I appreciate your understanding and diligence.Thank you for your patience thus far. Please allow me some time to review the information you have provided and I will reply as soon as possible.and then ran it again to fixCan you tell me what "fix" you did with Farbar's Recovery Scan Tool? And currently can you boot into Safe Mode?

    hallo dear experts,

my system crashed yesterday due to gpu overheating. now it boots till windows animated logo but at the point right when welcome screen usually comes there is nothing now but a moveable mouse cursor on a completelly black background.

now i have following stuff to get back to normal: two very old restore points and a recently created macrium reflect system image but no repair disc. i will be very happy, if there is a way to use the image since i know that some of you prefer macrium reflect insted of microsofts system image solution. unfurtuntelly my restauration points are way to old (april 2011). ill be very glad to hear your suggestions

A:Black Screen but cursor after crash; after windows start animation

You can create the Macrium Reflect disc on any system running Windows. Just make sure you create the disc for the correct version of Windows and the correct 32-bit or 64-bit version.

If your external drive is recognized by the Linux version of Macrium, you have even more options and can create the Macrium disc with any OS.

Do you have access to another system, or friends who could let you use theirs?

My laptop just had same problem. couple of hours ago.

What i did was I press f8 when windows were starting up and then I clicked on "Repair system"

Afterwards man options came like system restore, memory diagnostic etc. I clicked on Command prompt then type this command without quotes. "chkdsk /f /r C:"

This command will do chkdsk and repair any hard drive issue. My laptop seems working for a moment.

Hi, can you get it to boot into safe mode?
To do so, from start up keep tapping the F8 key, that should give you the Advanced Boot Options screen, use the up and down keys to highlight Safe mode, or safe mode with networking, then press the Enter key. If it boots into safe mode, or not, let us know, whoever comes next will help further.

Hi all I ve been searching around for someone with my problem however the things I find don t seem to be exactly the same Sometimes when I turn on my computer the screen will turn on as usual and there is like a cursor start of frozen startup with at very Black screen blinking cursor that blinks in the top left corner of the screen again as usual However it will sometimes stop and stay on this screen for upwards of a minute or more The laptop sounds like it s still working as the fan is going pretty fast and everything sounds like it s spinning however it doesn t show anything on the screen After around the minute duration the screen will go black and the normal boot up process is proceeded with From what I ve read of other people they can t even Black screen with blinking cursor frozen at very start of startup get past this screen which is why I think my problem is slightly different or the same just not as severe Does my problem also sound like it s the MBR as indicated by other people s questions on the Internet If so is there any easy way to repair it without having to use a windows disc as I have a laptop and didn t get a disc with it Thanks Denno nbsp

A:Black screen with blinking cursor frozen at very start of startup

If you go to Backup and Restore in Control Panel you can Create a system repair disc. You can then use it to start up and try a repair. You may have to do the same MBR several times before it works.

Today I tried to boot up my laptop but I am stuck at a blinking cursor on a black screen.

To make matters work my keyboard doesn't work either so I can't use F2 or F12 before it boots to the black screen.

Any idea what the problem could be? I'm stumped and thinking the laptop may just be trash now.

A:Toshiba Laptop won't start up- blinking cursor on black screen

Most often failure to boot disk is a user failure, not hardware. Keep trying, more vigorously. Sometimes what helps is to reset the CMOS which can also be done by pulling the battery if you can access it easily enough on your lappy.

You need to work through these steps for Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Start.

There are some Boot disks/flash sticks provided in the steps that will boot themselves without user input so I'd boot Hiren’s BootCD 15.1 or Hiren's BootCD From USB Flash Drive to run an A/V test, test your HD and RAM, Check File System and Active partition with Partition Wizard on Hirens.

But if you can't get the Win7 installer or Repair CD to boot you may need to rescue your files using Rescue disk in Step 9, then wipe the HD using Partition Wizard on Hirens, which will force the installer to start to Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7.

You can also try getting the inferior Toshiba HDD Recovery Utility if you can get the Fkey to boot it.

I think I saw this post aver at Toms but I also think you gave some additional info.
I think what may be going on it during the switch from the windows low res video driver to the driver used in normal mode.

Since you can get into safe mode try to go to device manager.
    Start|right click computer|properties|device manager.
    Look in the display adapter.
Is there a yellow exclamation mark there?
Or is it showing the video that you know should be there?
Please post the video that the machine uses and or the PB model.

Let's try looking at these reports:
    1)  Please provide this information (even though you may not be reporting BSOD's) so we can provide a complete analysis (from the Pinned Topic at the top of the forum):  http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/576314/blue-screen-of-death-bsod-posting-instructions-windows-10-81-8-7-vista/
    2)  Please do the following:
    - open Event Viewer (run eventvwr.msc from the "Run" dialog)
    - expand the Custom Views category (left click on the > next to the words "Custom Views")
    - right click on Administrative Events
    - select "Save all Events in Custom View as..."
    - save the file as Admin.evtx
    - zip up the file (right click on it, select "Send to", select "Compressed (zipped) folder")
    - upload it with your next post (if it's too big, then upload it to a free file-hosting service and post a link here).
FYI - If we're looking for Event ID 41 errors (unexplained shutdowns), there's more info on that here:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2028504

My computer used to boot very quickly (less than 20 seconds to desktop, I'm on an SSD), but at some point recently it started pausing at a black screen with the cursor in the middle for about 40 seconds before getting to the logon screen. I ran Xbootmgr and it shows that PlugPlay start is taking 40029ms, during which time Xperfview shows that there is no disk or CPU activity.

This is the line from the xperf XML from a boot trace that is worrying me:

    Code:
    <serviceTransition name="PlugPlay" group="PlugPlay" transition="start"
    totalTransitionTimeDelta="40048" firstCheckpointTimeDelta="18" processingTimeDelta="40029"
    container="DcomLaunch svchost (956)" startedAt="5644" firstCheckpointedAt="5663" endedAt="45693"/>
I've attached the full XML file below.

Any help identifying what's actually causing the issue?

A:Boot pauses on black screen with cursor, possible PlugPlay Start issue

Right after a start run this in cmd:

    Code:
    tasklist /svc /fi "imagename eq svchost.exe"
and see what comes up, post a screenshot perhaps

Also check event viewer for any abnormal hangs.

Try removing the Ethernet cable and start. Also try restarting in Safe Mode (with and without networking).
Try a clean startup too - Troubleshoot Application Conflicts by Performing a Clean Startup

Recently, when I start my computer, the Asrock splash screen appears, followed by the pulsating windows logo. Once this is done, it moves on to a black screen with only the cursor visible. The cursor is movable but no key commands seem to do anything. Eventually the desktop appears but it can take up to two minutes and seems to be getting longer every time. I was also looking at my event log and found this entry: "The Religious Religion service failed to start due to the following error:
The system cannot find the file specified." I'm not very knowledgeable on the subject but "The Religious Religion service" sounds a lot like a virus. I'm not sure if these two things are connected, and an AV scan has turned up negative. Thanks for any help.

Hi, my video card died this morning so I installed one from a different computer. I have a three year old Dell Vostro 410 running XP Pro. I took out an nvidia G310DE from a different Dell computer and put it into my computer. I managed to get a display so I uninstalled the old ATI drivers, restarted and installed the new nvidia drivers. When I restarted, I got a black screen with a white square cursor after the windows splash screen. I can boot into safe mode with no issues though. I've tried the driver from the nvidia website, the dell CD, and let windows look for drivers. Each time, I get the same result.

I've been at this for the past 4 hours now and can't think of what else to do. Thanks for your help!

A:Installed new graphics card and drivers - Black screen with white box cursor on start up

<<I've tried the driver from the nvidia website, the dell CD, and let windows look for drivers>>

Why would you use the drivers from the Dell CD...which I would think are only for the Intel onboard video?

Did you disable the onboard video in the BIOS settings?

Did you completely uninstall all the ATI software...both via Device Manager and via Add/Remove Programs?

I think I'd take a look at Device Manager and see what's reflected there.

    Brief overview:

Everytime i load up I get a Black Screen/prompt Before Welcome Screen. The System hangs on until i click ok.

This window's prompt is always a different title with the name of a location. Inside this pop-up window are square charaters(usually two square characters). It is square because my system cannot read that type of character(I think thats why the are square characters). So to get passed it to reach the "Welcome" screen, I must click "OK". After I click "OK", the "Welcome" window comes up, and then everything is ok as I am on my "desktop screen".

Every time I Start up XP I get a Black Screen/prompt Before Welcome Screen. The System stalls until I click the OK prompt.

This window's prompt is always a different title with the name of a location. Inside this pop-up window are square characters(usually two square characters). It is square because my system cannot read that type of character(I think thats why they are square characters). So to get by it to reach the "Welcome" screen, I must click "OK". After I click "OK", the "Welcome" window comes up, and then everything is ok as I am on my "desktop screen".

Blue lines are on my screen and I can't see the picture. Now after a month of this at start-up the screen is black, but I can hear windows start-up sound in the background. Anyone know why it's doing this?

    Thanks,

    J

A:Screen is black at start-up, before there were blue streaks.

    Assuming its a laptop...

Have you tried connecting another monitor to it to see if you get a picture?

If you hold a light up to the screen, can you see anything on it (faint picture)?

Have you tried putting pressure on the laptop and around the frame of the screen in multiple places to see if it responds?

Your screen could be dead or have a bad connection. It would be helpful to know if you have tried these things first.

When I turn on my computer all I get is a black screen with the flashing cursor up in the left corner of the screen. Any ideas as to how to correct this? I have a Dell from he'll computer-- inspiron E1505 about 8 years old and just had windows 7 home edition installed on it

A:Black screen with flashing cursor in upper left corner of screen

Hey I just went through something very similar. I found that my SATA cable connecting the hard drive to the motherboard had failed. I replaced it with a new SATA cable, and it booted right up. Try the cable first if you have one lying around, plus its a cheap solution. If you replace the cable and it still won't boot up, it might be your hard drive. Seeing as how your machine is that old, it could fail at any time.

Do you get anything on the screen when you turn it on?

sounds like you need the PCIe power connector to run your video card. Try removing the card and enabling the onboard video until you get a new PSU or adadpter.

Hey everyone I did a bit of research and this seems to have been an issue for a while or has been in the past Was upgrading to windows I first had to restart my pc cause it was initially stuck on that preparing to install problem with the green bar being stuck around It then got through that and began the installation process with the big circle and rebooting process However around when I last looked at it it was just black screen this stayed this way for about - hours I then decided to reboot the pc and it has now booted to the login screen Is this a known (no screen just Black Screen to blank) but cursor of Doom Booted login bug or could there be a possible issue The problem seems a bit different Black Screen of Doom but Booted to login screen (no cursor just blank) as some people I saw have had to fall back on PC restore points etc So not sure if it installed or what could be the problem Also side note I upgraded my pc when windows first publically released but rolled back because I had about min shutdown times So not sure what is Black Screen of Doom but Booted to login screen (no cursor just blank) going on and any info would be greatly appreciated Thanks

A:Black Screen of Doom but Booted to login screen (no cursor just blank)

I never had a problem upgrading like you've experienced but I experiencing Windows 10 upgrading process is the longest time taken ever compared to previous versions. It took me 1 hour+ to finished.

Play around a little bit to get used to it then did a clean install. No problem arise, seems working fine.

The point is, problems always happen after upgrading, to solve it just perform installation from scratch (clean install).

    Hey

I have a toshiba satellite l350d laptop and earlier today for some reason the screen went black while I was using it. No back light or anything. I figured it just shut down due to over heating because it was pretty hot underneath. But the fan was still running and the power, battery and cd drive lights were still on. I tried shutting it down by holding the power button but it is completely unresponsive. So I waited until the battery ran out. I booted up my computer but the screen remained dark and only the lights and fan turned on. I know I should be posting my computer specs but I don't know what they are at the moment.

Hopefully there is a easy fix for this

If you see harddisk activity, try an external monitor/TV. Turn on the laptop and wait a while (most laptops don't display to externals until Windows load).

SAMLIB.dll is a security account manager dynamic linked lib. A repair install from the dvd should fix the problem unless you are infected with malware, or have a modified system

    Hello,

I bought a new computer in September, Dell N5050. The first problem occurred in November, I made prntScr: http://i49.tinypic.com/2gsjp5y.png
This problem is solved: I thought it's a virus, I downloaded Advanced SystemCare (I had McAfee) this scanned my computer and found a four Trojan.

    Then came a new problem.
I turn on computer, starting windows, black screen with a cursor about 8-9 minutes, log on and welcome screen loading about 5 seconds.
    OR
I turn on computer, starting windows, black screen with a cursor about 1-2 minutes, log on and welcome screen loading about 6-7 minutes.

I really don't know, what it depends on.
What is problem? How I can fix it?

PS: my native language isn't English. Sorry for mistakes.
PS: I have Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit.

    Thanks,
    theHappie.

A:Welcome screen load time or black screen with a cursor

First thing I'd do is getting rid of Advanced System Care. It's a system optimizer, and Windows 7 does not like optimizers. I'd bet that it is responsible of the slow start.

Second, ASC isn't an antivirus, or if it is I never heard of it. Which isn't a good sign. Install a good antivirus and run a full scan, I like Avira (my favourite, which is free and nuked all evil things I threw at it), but other people like Microsoft Security Essentials (again free, but less powerful than Avira).

Welcome to TSG, Kiwichick. You stated....

Fan has been cleaned and power supply checked, no change.Click to expand...

It's very possible that in cleaning the machine something may have become loose. (It happened to me before,
a sata cable wasn't completely connected.) Check all of the connections at both ends. Any cables or straps
need to be tightly seated to the HDD as well as the connection to the mobo.

Before you open the case, disconnect all peripherals and press the power supply button in for approx. 30 seconds
to drain the remaining flea power. It sounds like a loose cable to the drive.

Hello. Recently had a virus and have been going through the steps here on bleeping computer to help get rid of it. The last thing I was told to do was run the farbar scan tool and to copy and paste a code and hit fix. Upon doing so the computer prompted for a restart. It now won't get to the log in screen. I've tried booting in safe mode and I've also tried last known working configuration as suggested and nothing has worked unfortunately. I was told to come here. Hopefully something can be done. Thanks a ton.

You cannot do the above and if you have another Windows 7 computer create a System Repair Disk. Boot and try a System Restore to a date just before the problem.

There is a hotfix for this issue, with the issue being so wide spread one would think Microsoft would put it in an update. The hotfix is called Windows6.1-KB2578159, make sure to download the 64 bit version from Microsoft's site. This will hopefully fix your issue. At the hospital I work at we have had this issue a lot and just now found this hotfix, so I can't say for sure if it will fix your issue. Also make sure you have all the Windows updates installed. Hope that helps.

A:Unable to start my computer a blue screen appearing and my avg antivirus..

Well if its booting into safemode thats letting you know its software related. Giving you a nasty virus.

I would then run a virus scan on that, using something besides AVG for this.

I've got a problem with my Win install I recently bought a of instead screen + cursor screen login Black copy of Win Pro amp installed the -bit version as I intend to get more ram at some point fairly soon I installed it last weekend amp for a few days it's been running fine Then days ago when I start it up instead of Black screen + cursor instead of login screen a login screen all I have is a black screen with a cursor if I wait until the screensaver kicks in amp then move the mouse or press a key etc then I can see the login screen amp log in with no problems if I wait until the HD activity finishes amp then type in my password I can Black screen + cursor instead of login screen login fine Safe mode starts fine amp if I log in to normal mode then everything runs fine amp I don't get any other black screens At no point am I getting any errors I've run my usual AV Avira free version amp MalwareBytes Antimalware amp neither of them have come up with any issues Windows seems to be booting up fine until it gets to the login screen after the Black screen + cursor instead of login screen swirly windows screen amp it's obviously doing something as there's a normal amount of HD activity I've tried the Startup repair on the install disk to no avail I've tried post from this thread but things went a bit pear-shaped around the quot taking ownership quot bit though I've not had any errors afterwards I've tried enabling the OEM default background registry edit since it seemed straight forward enough to no avail I've even tried changing the background colours via the registry switch Hkey users default control panel colours Background from black to white The login screen is still there since I can enter my password amp get into windows it's just black on black on black which is somewhat annoying So I'm stumped since the vast majority of what google returns for combinations of quot win login screen black quot are issues where Windows goes black after loging in which isn't my problem I've also uploaded my ntbtlog though nothing really jumped out to my non-professional I'm an accountant amp probably know just enough to really screw up windows eyes Any ideas Or am I going to have to re-install windows a mere days after installing it for the first time though at least I do have everything I'd need to install afterwards saved And finally amp probably unrelated I seem to have mislaid the Search button thing on the start menu Any help with the blakc login screen would be much appreciated

Avira, no idea why it's showing as AVG, I've not had that installed in several years (& several re-installs including a reformat)...

Edit: Though googling avgntflt.sys says that it's part of Avira.

I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium.

As I brought my computer out of sleep mode the computer had crashed with the screen showing vertical, multicolored lines that vaguely resembled gray.

I had to hard restart my computer and after the splash screen, the login screen with all the users never appears, nor does my cursor.

Nothing is on my screen except a faint glow indicating that it's active.

Could anyone help me solve this problem? I've searched on Google but all the results have something to do with the cursor displaying.

I've already tried doing a System Restore and Startup Repair.

Currently posting from Safe Mode w/ Networking.

Hi, I have recently installed windows updates and after restart the black screen occurred after I typed my password. About five days before that I have reinstalled my Mobile Intel 4 series driver and now in Device manager it shows 3 grayed out monitors which were installed when I have reinstalled the Video driver. The monitor driver that Is currently loaded was installed when I installed the OS itself. Is it safe to remove the grayed out drivers and will this fix my problem?

    Thanks!

    Hi werty,
if you delete them after you press check for hardware changes will they reappear?
if so uninstall them hard then reboot your PC you might wanna create a restore point first in case some thing wrong happens, refer to this link if you dont know how:Create a restore point

A:Computer crashed, unable to start windows in reg mode, Blue Screen info provided

possible that you have some bad random access memory (RAM) in your computer microsoft provides a free memory checker you can run off a cd or floppy disk. you can get the program here http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp this should provide you with if you have bad memory in your computer. if it won;t let you boot at all into windows and gives you a blue screen of death the memory should fail right away but if it doesnt let it do a few passes to verify probally 5 times should be enough.

otherwise something happened to the OS you could put the OS disk in and do a repair install if the memory passes the test to see if that gets you anywhere

Black screen errors are notoriously difficult to fix (if they can be fixed - most times I've seen that they can't be fixed)
I would suggest, since you have a good backup, that you go ahead and start with a clean install of the operating system
BUT, please run these free, bootable diagnostics BEFORE installing the OS:  http://www.carrona.org/initdiag.html

Hi thanks startup, death Black at Solved: all blue with began screen screen a of for checking Solved: Black screen of death at startup, all began with a blue screen my question I haven t found an answer to my particular situation Dell xps m laptop w vista It all started with a blue screen w scrolling text after the fated restart The blue screen text said quot if this is the first time you ve seen this message quot and then comp restarted again showing the blue screen then restarted into windows repair mode after repair mode tried to fix Solved: Black screen of death at startup, all began with a blue screen the problem comp restarted then the screen went black blank right after the little windows loading animation where the bar keeps moving from left to right and there s a small windows logo It all happened fast so there may have been steps I forgot but that s the jist of it Now screen always goes black blank during startup after the windows loading animation so I can t start windows in normal mode I can start in safe mode if I manually force shutdown by holding the power button so I m not imploding with fear ok I am Possible causes This occured right after installing vista updates that restart was when I saw the blue screen Also occured the restart after running a patch called quot Vista TCP IP and UAC AutoPatch quot I downloaded it from softpedia the developer was listed as defcon and their website listed was securevista net but the site is down I found this out after the problem occured The patch had lots of positive reviews and lots of people on other sites also suggest using it to remove the limit of tcp connections which windows unnecessarily imposes Removing the limit supposedly increases P P filesharing speeds so it s a common approach to slow utorrent problems etc to patch the tcp sys file I have since quot unpatched quot it using the unpatch file which came with it but I m suspicious of the software developer now The patch originally disabled UAC user account control which is suspicious to me but I m not highly tech savy so I dunno if that s common or not I did also remove mcafee s security center I was busy I guess that was a mistake should always restart after each big change I apologize for the complication this creates in identifying the problem It s possible I did something else before the fatal restart if none of these three could be the culprit then I ll think harder about what that could be but for now these changes stand out in my mind I m assuming that windows repair mode s changes didn t cause this problem but I don t have any factual reason to believe that What could this be What can I do Thank you p s This is the last time I ever install software from a company that doesn t have an active website even if this wasn t the problem s cause nbsp

Hello,I will be helping you with your problems. Please be patient while I assist you. Some points for you to keep in mind while I am helping you to make things go easier and faster for both of us Please do NOT run, install or uninstall any programs, unless instructed to do so.
We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability. Please do not attach logs or use code boxes, just copy and paste the text.
Due to the high volume of logs we receive it helps to receive everything in the same format, and code boxes make the logs very difficult to read. Also, attachments require us to download and open the reports when it is easier to just read the reports in your post. Please read every post completely before doing anything.
Pay special attention to the NOTE: lines, these entries identify an individual issue or important step in the cleanup process. Please provide feedback about your experience as we go.
A short statement describing how the computer is working helps us understand where to go next, for example: I am still getting redirected, the computer is running normally, etc. Please do not describe the computer as "the same", this requires the extra step of looking back at your previous post.NOTE: At the top of your post, click on the Watch Topic Button, select Immediate Notification, and click on Proceed. This will send you an e-mail as soon as I reply to your topic, allowing us to resolve the issue faster.NOTE: Backup any files that cannot be replaced. Removing malware can be unpredictable and this step can save a lot of heartaches if things don't go as planed. You can put them on a CD/DVD, external drive or a pen drive, anywhere except on the computer.NOTE: It is good practice to copy and paste the instructions into notepad and print them in case it is necessary for you to go offline during the cleanup process. Previously it showed Blue Screen every time I boot my Y460; few seconds after the Window Logo. No matter how many times I reformate, it still showing Blue Screen, indicating STOP 0x00000116 and atikmpag.sys error. Subsequently, I went into the BIOS and changed the settings on the graphics switchable to discrete graphics. However its getting worst now because there is no display (totally black with no background light) every time I on my y460. Hence I need assistance and solutions, thanks.

    Hello.

Just today, I turned on my computer and got the blue screen of death, so I restarted my PC. Then a black screen came up saying "Windows could not start beacuse the following file is missing or corrupt : \windows\system32\config\system."

You can attempt to repair this file by putting the winxp cd in etc...

Now when i turn on my computer there is just a black screen showing, with nothing at all on it.

    Any ideas anyone?

Thanks very much for your help.

It's a nasty error that requires some persistance and resourcefullness to overcome without a clean install.

If you have a Windows CD or have the recovery console installed, you might want to have a go at these directions.

My screen came up the other day blue and saying it was checking disk and that volume was dirty. now the screen is black. computer acts like it is coming up but just sits there. Is there anything I can do?

A:blue screen, ckdisk, volume dirty, now black screen

First, backup your data using a bootable disk (such as a Live Linux or Ultimate Boot CD)
If the scan didn't fix the drive (if the drive is still marked as "dirty") then you'll most likely have to format the drive (and will lose everything if you haven't backed it up).
Then start with these free diagnostics (before formatting the drive):

    Quote:

I suggest starting all troubleshooting with the following diagnostic tests. They'll save you a lot of time and heartache if there is a hardware failure, and you'll have the disks on hand in case you need them in the future:

    Quote:

    H/W Diagnostics:
Please start by running these bootable hardware diagnostics:
Memory Diagnostics (read the details at the link)
HD Diagnostic (read the details at the link) - Test ALL of the hard drives.

Also, please run one of these free, independent online malware scans to ensure that your current protection hasn't been compromised: Free Online AntiMalware Resources (read the details at the link)

This can happen at any time for me (including when I was re-installing windows in an attempt to fix the problem... did not go well ) but more often than not happens during web-browsing and especially when watching youtube vids. I'm going to assume it has something to do with my graphics card as the blue screen does not actually come up... instead the screen goes black and then I have to restart the computer. Anyways upon boot up and log in I get a windows message that tells me that windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown ect.. and the numbers are:

Have you activated your Win 7?

Fully and completely update your Win7. Afterwards, I'll be asking you to submit a file which will show me all of the installed updates.

The update procedure will take qute a period of time since you do not have SP1 installed. This means there are updates to get you up to SP1 and then there about 100 updates post-SP1.

    UPDATING YOUR WIN 7
    1. ASSURE THAT YOU RECEIVE ALL UPDATES
WIN | type WINDOWS UPDATE | ENTER |
    Change settings (left-hand column) |
checkmark all four of the boxes | OK button

Approve any dialog boxes presented. Let Windows install any update features.

WIN is the key with the Microsoft flag on top.

    2. INSTALL CRITICAL UPDATES
    Check for Updates (left-hand column)
    Install ALL critical updates.
Restart your computer (even if not prompted)

Repeat this procedure until there are no more critical updates.

DO NOT TRUST the ?Windows is up to date? in center of dialog. until you see that TWICE IN A ROW!

    3. INSTALL IMPORTANT UPDATES
Use the ?critical update? procedure until all important updates are installed.

    4. INSTALL OPTIONAL UPDATES
Under Optional updates you will be presented with:
    a) Microsoft Bing Desktop which is of questionable value
    b) a list of about 34 language updates.

You can hide those updates so that aren't continually notified of those updates.
When you click on 34+ optional updates are available, then you
    a) highlight all of the language updates,
    b) right-click anywhere in the highlighted list.
    c) click on Hide Updates,
    d) OK button.
    Install ALL other Optional Updates.
    Use the ?critical update? procedure.

    UPDATE GOLDEN RULES
    Install ALL, yes, ALL updates.
This is Win 7 and not Vista or XP (eXPired).

    UPDATE IS HUNG ?TAKING FOREVER
Hung is very doubtful unless you interrupted updates.

CTRL + SHIFT + ESC key combo will pop-up the Task Manager.
Lo and behold, Windows Update is still running!

You hold down the CTRL and SHIFT keys.
While holding them down, tap the ESC key once.
