Preferred Solution: how can I enable the buttons in my touchpad on my laptop

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Try uninstalling the Alps touchpad driver in the Device Manager and reinstall it again.
You can find a version released on 06/08/2010 here.
1)  Open the Start menu and type devmgmt.msc in the Search programs and files box.
2)  Programs will appear above the search box with devmgmt listed below it, click on this.
3)  In the Device Manager scroll down to Mice and other pointing devices and click on the diamond to the left of it to expand the list of devices.
4)  Double click on the Alps touchpad.
5)  Click on the Driver tab, then click on Uninstall, then click on OK.
6)  Reinstall the touchpad driver.

Hi there, first off, I'd like to say that I am using a Dell XPS l502x. Yesterday I was cleaning my keyboard and palmrest, and i think some liquid got inside the mouse buttons and the power button, because they malfunction now. The mouse buttons do not work, and the power button only works when I press it sometimes. When I do press the mouse buttons, sometimes the laptop will go to sleep or on standby. I'm thinking of buying a replacement for the palmrest because it contains both the power button and touchpad, as well as the mouse buttons, but I need confirmation so that I don't end up wasting money if it doesn't work. Is there anything I can do?

This is my first time posting here, I appreciate any help. Thanks .

Hello and Welcome to TSG moeenali.

You will need to download the drivers for the touch pad. As well as other drivers such as chipset drivers.

If anyone has acces to the connections/schematics for the M4600 touchpad/button assembly, I'd love to see them! For some reason both the right buttons have stopped working. Tried to disconnect/reconnect  the 14 pin "touchpad cable from the mainboard, but unfortunately this did not do the trick. Need to look a bit deeper - so would love to see the schematics or at least the pinout of the connector(s)... (It's a button - how hard can it be to fix... ;-)
Thanks and best regards,

I did a touchpad update  and now the buttons switch around. when one works the other will pop up with a tiny menu ive never seen before. If both buttons work the touchpad wont work. I have put them to default and it works for a bit then will switch again. Didn't have this problem till that stupid update. I have a dell 15-3552 laptop and its less than 2 months old.

The leftmost touchpad button (not the ones in between the keyboards and touchpad, the buttons below the touchpad), is sticking. The other two bounce right up like the keyboard keys, but the left one has worn down it's spring after heavy use. Is there a replacement option for this other than replacing the entire upper casing (595775-001)?

I have a Toshiba Satellite A200-27Z. It is a fairly old laptop running Vista but there are no plans to get rid of it yet!

A couple of weeks ago the touchpad and mouse buttons stopped working. There was no lead up to this, just suddenly stopped. This lead to a second issue with my wireless connection which I eventually had to solve by re-installing Windows (I sought help in this thread

The fresh install of Windows fixed my wireless issues but strangely the touch pad and buttons still don't work at all. Given that I just installed Windows with all the drivers does that mean this is a hardware fault? And is there a way to fix it or do I now have to rely on the USB mouse?

Thank you in advance for any help,

A:Touchpad and buttons not working

Since you re-installed Windows with fresh install of drivers for the touchpad, chances are good that it is a hardware failure.

> No mouse or touch pad are showing in Device Manager. Perhaps I use the wrong set of drivers?

The touchpad device should be visible in device manager; either as unknown device or device marked with an yellow exclamation mark?.this should be visible even if the driver would not be installed.

But if the device (touchpad ) is recognized by system, then either is disabled (in BIOS) or it malfunctions.
Check the BIOS settings.
There you could enable / disable touchpad (pointing device)

This may sound like an odd request, but is there a way to disable the touchpad buttons from moving the mouse, but still have them work when they're pressed? Here's what happens...I'm using the touchpad and I hit the left button and it moves my mouse pointer a little.  But I don't want it to move. I just want to press the button without my touching it causing the pointer to move a little. It really screws with some things I do.
Is there any solution to this? If not, can I buy a completely different touchpad?

After having to re-install Windows 7 on my laptop I've found that the trackpad and associated mouse buttons are no longer working. The keyboard works fine. The touch screen works fine. When I inserted an external mouse, it automatically installed the driver and worked without issue.I installed the Synaptics TouchPad Driverbut that didn't make any difference. I also tried removing the battery, holding the power button for 30 seconds, re-instering the power cable (but not the battery) and booting up the latop.  It was working fine before the re-install so I can ssume i's not a hardware fault and if the keyboard works the interface cable is also working... Just wondering if anyone has had the same issue and can suggest anything?

Hi Matt0000, What generation is your Zbook 17? In regards to the touchpad issue, please check your touchpad to see if there is any amber light on the top left/right corner. If there is, double tap it. When the amber light is there, it means the touchpad is disabled. If that doesn't fix the issue, please go to our HP drivers page ( and install the Synaptics Mouse driver. Once you have installed the driver, restart the notebook and open Synaptics software. Most likely it will be located on the task bar. You should be able to control your touchpad feature there.  Thank you, -Tenzin

My problem is, I use the touchpad/USB mouse on and off, depending where i am.

Last night i was at my desk, and I plugged in my mouse, When i moved to somewhere comfortable, I unplugged my mouse, and now my touchpad's buttons (left and right) dont work, well they do, but they work as the scroll button (open things in tabs ect)

What can i do to fix this problem? I was told that i need to do a full system recovery to see if its a hardware problem. This has never happened before.

I can backup by documents, but I need my software... (in total, easily ?5000, but no serials(got serials over phone), so i cant get new ones...)

Hello.  I have a fairly new Lenovo G510 laptop, just a few months old.  Ever since I received it, I noticed the buttons on the touchpad are very loud when pressed.  The left is louder than the right, but frankly both are annoying the people around me.  The sound has not changed with use.  Is this just how they are, or is something wrong?

A:Lenovo G 510 Touchpad left/right buttons very loud

Hi Lulu12,
Welcome to Lenovo Community!
As per the query we understood that you are facing an issue with the touchpad buttons are very loud.
As this is not hardware or the software issue, as there is spring below the touchpad the sound might be due to the spring when you click on the touchpad, this is due to the mechanical action that goes through when the clickpad is clicked this is not a issue with the hardware.

A:Satellite C50-B-189 touchpad and buttons stopped working

Hi, this is due to the pad driver (which is bugged), just kill the process using CTRL+SHIFT+ESC AND THE TAB plus DOWN ARROW to navigate to the target process. I have to do this each starts.

From tomsguide (november 2014):

These fixes don't help, all that happens is, after some time, the touchpad fails again. While Toshiba works on this, I have figured out a quick, effective workaround. This is for my new Windows 8 Toshiba.
Press CTRL ALT SHIFT to get your processes to come up. Find the Touchpad "enhancer" process. End the process. Your touchpad will work fine until next restart at which point just repeat this step.
If you are struggling to end the process without being able to use your touchpad, I found a curious thing out. If you hold a mouse click down, you can move the mouse arrow with the touchpad just fine. Its a bit... inconvenient...but all you need to do this for is to end that process and after that you can use the touchpad normally.

We have recently performed a fresh install of Windows 7 x64 on a Toshiba Tecra A10.
The OS has picked up most drivers, we had to install drivers for the card reader ourselves.

Our problem is that the touchpad and buttons do not work at all.
The driver shows in Device Manager as being properly installed, but that's all. I have even installed the Alps Control Panel (Vista x64) which runs okay.
Have tried the "Touch pad and stick are automatically invalidated" settings when using an external USB mouse, all to no avail.

The hardware was working perfectly okay with Windows 7 32 Bit installed.

Is there a fix here?

A:Tecra A10 - Touchpad and buttons do not work on Windows 7 x64

Maybe it?s just a driver issue? I have checked the available downloads for Tecra A10 on Toshiba page and for Windows 7 32bit there is a newer driver available, for Windows 7 64bit not (no driver). So you must use the Vista 64bit driver?

What you can do is testing the touchpad driver for Tecra A11. There is a newer version for Windows 7 64bit from Alps Electric so the correct one. Touchpad driver is not system related so I?m pretty sure it also works on your model.

Have a look on Toshiba website for Tecra A11 driver: > Support & Downloads > Download Drivers

Our organization recently invested 250 G4 enable/disable Touchpad, in a large batch of G notebooks I'm wondering 250 G4 Touchpad, enable/disable if there's a way to quickly enable disable the touchpad modify something in our group policy or distribute a driver update or something to allow for this option nbsp Due to the environment many of our staff are working in frequently out in the community or even operating off of mobile hotspots in their parked vehicle many users don't use a mouse but would like the option to turn the touchpad off while typing to avoid misplacing the cursor Naturally they'll need the ability to easily turn the touchpad back on without the use of a mouse in this case nbsp As a result I don't see navigating to the mouse settings to disable the touchpad as being a viable option as they wouldn't have the ability to turn it back on when they were done typing nbsp I'm used to seeing a Fn F key option to disable the touchpad but this doesn't seem to be available on this model Is there a solution that would result in functionality with that level of simplicity If not what other options are there

I have an HP Pavilion dv6.I want to play games that require you to move with the some of the keys and aim with the touchpad. My touchpad has an automatic setting to be disablde while I'm typing though.I've seen so many forum posts that are asking how to get there touchpad to do what mine is doing and I can't find a forum that talks about how to enable it.I've searched everywhere under my control panel for an option to turn this off. I want my touchpad to still work while i'm typing, how do I change this setting?

What you want to do is move the PalmCheck settings to minimum. You will need to go to Start, type "Mouse" in the Search bar, click on Mouse in the search results, click on the Device Settings tab in the Mouse Properties window, Click on the Settings button, click the expand for Pointing, the expand for Sensitivity, Select PalmCheck, and move the bar in the upper right window down to Minimum, then click Apply!

Hi all, I'm new to sevenforums, so I'm sorry if this is not the right place for this question. Basically, I just got a new laptop and started doing a little gaming (KOTOR and Battlefront II), the only problem is those games use awsd to move and the touchpad to look around and I can't use the touchpad while using the keyboard. Is there any way to enable touchpad use while using the keyboard? And an external mouse would do no good as I have no where to put it.

A:How do I enable my touchpad while using my keyboard?

There is a option in the touchpad settings called "palm check" that disables touchpad input while typing. Disable it, and you should be all set.

I have a Toshiba Satellite C875D-S7120 to fix. It has Windows 8. The touchpad and mouse buttons do not respond at all. They quit accepting input without warning. Device Manager and msinfo32 show no errors and Device Manager says the device is working properly. I have tried the Fn + F5 to turn off, then back on, and that has no effect. I tried 2 older drivers. Both installed correctly but did not fix the problem. I have 3 spare scrap Toshiba Satellite laptops, a C655-S5225, a Pro L550-EZ1702, and a C855D-S5305. All 3 have the same Synaptics touchpad, the part numbers match. I swapped in each of them and tested. That still did not solve the problem. Is it maybe a problem with the touchpad connector on the motherboard? The system is otherwise fine and works properly and a USB mouse works.

I have just upgraded from windows 7 to windows 10. everything seems to be fine till now apart from the touchpad.
The problem is that every time I press a button on the keyboard the touchpad stops working for about 4 seconds.
another things is that most buttons do that, but for example the ctrl, function, alt and windows keys don't cause this problem.

Any Idea what can cause this? and do you know any solutions please??
I tried updating the drivers for both keyboard and touchpad, but that didn't solve the problem.
It's very frustrating and I'm considering to goback to windows 7!

Many Thanks :)

I recently used a projector that plugged into my computer. Once I got the projector to work, my touchpad mouse on my laptop stoppd working, but I didn't think anything of it and just plugged in a wireless mouse with USB and my mouse worked again.

Now, I can't figure out how to get my touchpad working again, so I am thinking it is just a simple enable/disable option.

When I go to the Control Panel > Mouse, I get an error message that says that my laptop is not recognizing my touchpad.

It still lets me open the configure window if I hit "no," and when I go to Device Settings > Scrolling > One-Finger Scrolling, it does not let me check the "Enable Vertical Scrolling" box. When I click the box, nothing happens.

My Synaptics driver is enabled to turn on at start up, so I don't know why this problem is happening.

I think I must have disabled something in msconfig without realizing it, because one day when I turned on my laptop I just wasn't able to use vertical scrolling. Any ideas? Advice would be much appreciated! Thank you!

A:How do I enable touchpad vertical scrolling?

Hello moonlightxmania and welcome to Seven Forums.

If this issue just recently started you may be able to roll back your computer to a date/time prior to when it first began. See if you have a restore point that goes back that far.

System Restore

Another possibility is to see if you can update the Synaptics driver. Just as an example, my computer uses the Alps pointing device. When I go to control panel > mouse I get this:

When I click the Hardware tab and then double click on Alps pointing device I get this:

Click on the Driver tab and see if the "Update Driver" button can be clicked. (Mine is grayed out because I have the newest available driver.) If you can update the driver, do so. Please post back if your problem gets resolved.

Hello all,

I recently installed Windows 7 x64 onto my Dell Latitude D630 and found that the scrolling with the touchpad does not work at all. I have already downloaded and installed the Synaptics driver and nothing happened. I also downloaded R165804.exe directly from Dell's site and it came up with an error saying that 'the software does not work on your operating system. Click OK to exit.'

What now?

A:How to Enable Scrolling on Dell Latitude D630 Touchpad?

The Dell downloads do not show a touchpad driver for Vista 64 bit. Just the one you have which is listed for Vista 32 bit only.

Try installing that in a compatibility mode and see if that will help.

You can also post on the Dell laptop forum and maybe someone there will have something for you. Officially Dell does not support Win 7 on this model, although Vista drivers should work OK.

This may help, open the start menu, and click settings, and then click the “Devices” icon, then on the left column please select “Mouse & touchpad”. Click on the “additional mouse options” link under Related Settings. This will bring up mouse properties, click the buttons tab and then under Click Lock, uncheck the box for “Turn on Clicklock” and see if that helps.

You may also wish to turn off Tablet Mode, again click the start menu, then settings; you will be able to find Tablet Mode on the left. Turn it off and see if it makes a difference.

I can see a lot of values in the regedit ( HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Alps and HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Alps ) but I don't know which one it can be,
Do you know if a generic ALPS drivers exist? Do you have a solution for this issue?

Quick question, Your model has Quickset buttons? usually Quickset is a application You install when loading Windows. What happens if You disable Quikset temporarily?
I'm not recollecting the layout of Your Dell.
The service manual is here
If the quickset buttons are separate as I seem to recall, they may have been damaged too. If not is there a possibility more liquid has been spilled into the keyboard?
Some trouble shooting You could do. Using the service manual and being very careful as the connectors are delicate unhook the Keyboard and test using a USB keyboard.
Any chance You can take it back to the Technician and ask why this is happening when they said only the keyboard was defective.
Good Luck

I know this should be an easy one, but I can't figure it.

I use my HDTV HDMI tv and was having audio issues so i started enabling and disabling devices. When I disabled the Laptop audio, it disappeared from the list of devices (sounds). Now It does not show up and I don't know how to Re-enable it. Device manager doesn't show it and tried rescan hardware. Any ideas?

The only thing I did prior was making the audio on the TV the default, this elimated having to manually switch over every time I used it.

A:Can't Re-Enable Audio on Laptop

Try right mouse clicking in the body of the sounds window, this wil then give the option to show hidden devices.

My laptop froze in standby and after reboot touchpad and buttons do not work.
I have tried a restore point and also disableing the device rebooting and finding new hardware none of which has worked. I have noticed that during the boot process there is a point that it works briefly then stops. Device manager says working fine and it is definatly not a settings issue within Synaptic Device. So i guess it is a softwre problem but am now completely flummoxed.
I can get by with a usb mouse but I do not find this very practical as i use it mobile a lot.
Pease Help.

A:Laptop Touchpad.

i would download the driver for that device off the manufacturers website

gointo device manager and remove it - reboot, let windows find new hardware and re-install the driver for it

I just bought the above mentioned laptop for my daughter. It is a basic laptop with an I3 processor and was rather inexpensive in a bundle at Best Buy.  We have looked everywhere and cannot find out how to turn the TouchPad off. It is on and works fine but we cannot find anything keys on the keyboard or anything in the users manual that tells us how to turn it off.  I personally have a Toshibs laptop and the F5 key (without pressing the FN key) toogles between turning the TouchPad on and off.  Can someone help?  Thanks - Russell
