I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi nombie88,
Please run the diagnostics to confirm the hardware functionality. Here are the steps for it:

Tap the F12 key on startup.
Use the Arrow keys to highlight the Diagnostics option.
The Diagnostics starts running the quick test without waiting for user input.
To select a specific device to test, you can tap the Esc key.
Please make a note of any error message that appears on the screen, also make sure that you note down the validation code too.
Once quick test completes, please run a thorough test on the hard drive by selecting the 'Thorough' under Test Mode option.
Please make a note of end result of diagnostics.

If the diagnostics pass, lets check if the hard drive is getting detected. Here are the steps to check that:

Boot to BIOS, by tapping the F12 key on the startup.
Please check under the Main tab, if the hard drive is getting detected as shown in image below:

Please share the findings.

Just got a new Dell Inspiron N5050 laptop.
Using it about 3 weeks and loving it.
Pop up window invited me to update Windows. Clicked Yes.
While  update was in progress, I accidently turned it off.
Now, It boots up, but moments afterward, it goes to Blue Screen of Death and, before I can even read the Blue Screen, it goes to Black Screen and asks how I would like to start up - Normal startup - Safe mode - Safe Mode with Prompts, etc.
So I want to restore it to an earlier time or just restore back to the beginning (factory settings).
Can I do this in one of the start up options on the Black Screen?

When I tried upgrading from windows 7 to 10 on my Inspiron N5050 the screen had the windows 10 logo and spinning dots below it before going black. I had to hard restart my laptop. I contacted dell support  who said windows 10 was not compatable with my computer. They said I needed to restore my OS back to windows 7. When I start my computer I  can enter the bootup menu briefly before it automatically goes the windows 10 logo with the spinning dots. It stays like this for about a minute before going to the black screen. Any help with restoring to windows 7 from this point?

I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 running XP Pro. This morning I received an error code M1004 (something about overheating) and the computer was frozen at that point. I cleaned out dust from the heat deck, as it was completely blocked with dust. I also did a hard shut-down then restarted, and all I get is a black screen with a blinking cursor. I can only use F2 or F12. I've tried running diagnostics with no help. I upgraded my BIOS with no luck. I also tried to run chkdsk from the XP repair module, and I'm getting a message saying that one or more volumes have unrecoverable errors. I also get a directory enumeration error when I try to use the dir command on the C drive. I'm trying to figure out what to do now, as I unfortunately didn't back up about 1 GB of pictures that I need to get off this hard drive. Please help. Thank you!

You can pull that drive out of the computer and put it on another computer as a Slave drive or buy yourself a USB enclosure and put the drive in there and you will be able to copy your pictures and any other valuable data. Then either buy a new drive (as this one may be bad) or put it back in and Boot off of the XP CD, Format and reinstall.

Good work on troubleshooting. It may be an issue with the LCD screen or LVDS cable or the port on the system board where the LVDS cable gets connected. In the link below punch in the system service tag or express service code and you can access the user manual for removing and reseating LCD screen and LVDS cable. I would suggest you to perform the steps with a help of a computer technician., I would suggest you to update to the latest BIOS on the system. Please enter your service tag # on the link below, select the OS, then download the BIOS from BIOS section onto the system and install it.
Please let me know if this helps.

You can find the list of all the processors below tested by Dell on your computer:
(click on image for enlarged view)
You can check the comparison of 'i3-2350M' and 'i7-2860QM' from the link: The lithography and the dimensions of both the processors is same but the Core junction temperature, Maximum TDP (Thermal design power) and the clock speed are way different and may cause system instability issues.
Dell does not offer processor or motherboard upgrades for purchase as discrete items, nor does Dell recommend upgrading the processor or motherboard in any given system. Therefore, Dell cannot support systems in which the motherboard or processor has been upgraded through third-party services or products. For more information, you can refer to the link:

After so much for research, I was able to figure it out the problem is because of Intel Video Driver. There is a beta Intel video driver package which supports Windows 8.1. Try to update that package and post your results. As i have already rolled back to windows 8. It will take atleast 4-6 hours for me to update the status. Since you're downgrading from Windows 7 to Windows XP, I have doubts that the bluetooth and webcam devices will have drivers and will work.

You're lucky there are Windows XP drivers for the graphics and audio and ethernet/wireless devices - the primary ones.

Hi Rab Nawaz/jazzies,
If the hard drive is detected in the system and the system does not boot. Please run the Dell Diagnostics to determine if the hard drive has failed.

Turn off the computer. Restart it and pres F12 key at Dell Splash screen.
Use the down arrow key to highlight 'Diagnostics' from the 'One Time Boot' menu.
The ePSA starts running the quick test without waiting for an input.
Please share the error code(s) if any.
If the test completes without errors, restart PC and press F8 key.
Use the down arrow key to highlight 'Safe Mode with Networking' and press Enter.
If the system boots to Safe Mode, try System Restore.

Please revert with the results and I will help you accordingly.

A:Windows Starts then black screen with Cursor Inspiron 1525 Dell

will the new CD drive work without the drivers being installed on either hard drive? Thanks for your help.TammieHi Tammie and welcome to Bleepingcomputer.A CD drive or DVD drive is usually manufactured as a plug and play device, therefore there are no drivers required for it to work with a system. The plug and play technology is built right into the motherboard, that is where it begins. So a CD or DVD drive can be booted to regardless of whether there is even a hard drive installed, as long as the disk in the drive is burned as a boot disk.So a basic answer is, no you do not need drivers.Hope that answers your question and you are much welcomed for my reply.Bruce.

A:How do I get all of my pictures to show on my Dell Inspiron N5050?

Hi and welcome to SevenForums,
Sounds like you need to get rid of some temp files build up,
Run this and check the boxes for temp files and thumbnails at the least,

You can use this to cleanup both browsers,
Temp files delete,

I had an interesting problem, and there was a previous unanswered, but CLOSED post that discussed the same issue here:

I wanted to add to this. It seems that through trial and error that the motherboard/power supply is shorting out on a screw on the base of the unit. In particular, the two screws that are NOT on the edges, but towards the center of the laptop. I left those out and the laptop runs fine. I put them in, and I have no power at all. No lights, no fan, nothing on either DC or AC.

Just wanted to add this info in case anyone else comes along with a similar issue.

p.s. I also left out the screw in the battery compartment.

The normal startup sequence is:
1. Illuminated screen (1 sec) permitting F12 access to BIOS
2. Dell Logo with rotating dots
3 Desktop
What I am now getting is:
1 Black screen (30-35 sec) with no access to BIOS
2 and 3 as before.
Since this unfortunate change happened, I have been unable to see USB3 drives anywhere on the system (File Manager, Safely Remove Hardware, Device Manager, Disk Management, etc).
I have had this fault before with both Windows 8.1 and Windows 10, but have never found a remedy, and have always had to wait for the fault to rectify itself. This has meant waiting anything from 3 days to 1 month. Once the normal startup resumes, the USB3 fault is rectified without further ado.

A:How do I rectify black screen startup on an Inspiron 5537 15R running Windows 10 Home

Hi rackbrane,
Thanks for posting!
It sounds like your back light on your LCD screen is going bad or possibly the connection to the cable is loose! Try hooking up another monitor to it and see if you get video on that OK. If nothing appears on the other monitor try holding FN key and hit F1 to toggle thru ouputs until it shows.  If it is the screen, then a replacement can be easily procured from Dell Spare parts or from, or Discount Electronics.
Post back if you need additional assistance.  Thanks.

Hey all, I am trying to help somebody who knows nothing about computers reset her password and she doesn't have a password reset disk for it and I told her that she would have to re-install Windows or restore it back to factory default settings and I would much rather restore it back to factory default settings for her because doing a clean install takes forever considering that I would also have to download and install all of her drivers and the only thing I would have to do after a factory restore is re-install her programs and uninstall all the bloatware, can somebody please tell me how to do it thanks

It should be the same for Seven.
If it were me I would use a Disc with Seven SP1, I think that would be easier than going back to Seven with a factory reset, if SP1 did not come with the computer.

That sounds like a problem with the Vizio (no drivers) rather than a driver problem in the PC.

Have you checked Vizio to see if they have any Windows drivers?

In case it is a PC driver issue, make sure you have all the drivers installed from Dell.

Hi I was installing Windows 10 home on Dell Inspiron 15r 7000 7537 it got to around 80%, I looked down at my phone, looked up and then it was just a black screen...
I left it for around 3 hours and it hasn't progressed at all, its not responsive, there's no mouse cursur on screen and it doesn't respond to anything...
Any tips? I've downloaded windows 10 onto a USB incase it can help.
At the moment it seems pretty bricked...

After about another hour I was advised by someone to force power off as Dell laptops apparently sometimes hang during installation forever and Win 10 can retrieve installations. It booted past the Dell logo and said "Retrieving installation" and back to black screen...
I tried again and it just gave up and retrieved the Windows 8.1 installation that it backed up.
May try again later.

I just purchased a Dell Inspiron N5050 laptop computerspecifically because I wanted a computer that would support WiDi (IntelWireless Display) to my HDTV. I had been under the assumption that all currentgeneration laptops included Intel Wireless Display technology.
After receiving the computer, I have just discovered thatthe wireless network card in this machine apparently does NOT support wirelessdisplay technology. Is there a way that I can replace the network card in thismachine with one that DOES support wireless display technology or at least addan additional card to the machine that supports wireless display? Or…am I stuckwith a machine that does not have the capability that I need?  Thanks for any help.

A:Can Inspiron 15 - N5050 Support Intel Wireless Display (WiDi)?

Hi Scott_SK,
Welcome to the Community.
To be able to use the Intel Wireless Display the system needs to have the  following minimum requirement as given in this link below :
Replacing the wireless card(Dell Wireless card with Intel) or adding wireless card will not help as this feature should be enabled on the system from the factory.
If your system is within 21 days from the invoice date you may returm the system for full refund and re-order a system which supports the WiDi technology.
Thank You

Hi, I'm trying to do a factory restore on an Inspiron N5050, and the F8 menu does not have the 'Repair Your Computer' option, nor other expected items, such as last known good config. All it shows is the 3 safe mode options, and the boot windows normally option.

Dell's F12 menu is also missing an option to repair/restore.

I can boot the laptop to normal windows 7, but it's a black screen with a movable cursor. I get the same thing in Safe Mode, black screen, cursor.

I'm trying to figure out why the F8 menu is so limited. I can boot a Hiren's CD and get to a Mini XP desktop from there, and it works fine (no black screen).

Any help would be appreciated.

I think 1 item is n inverter ?

Thanks 4 any help

It could be the inverter - particuarly if the failure was sudden.  It could also be the backlight bulb itself, meaning a replacement screen is needed.

I've been working on a dell inspiron 1525 today and cant figure what is causing this problem.

The laptop boots, displays the post screen, and then the screen goes black.
You can boot into BIOS,
You can boot into the Boot menu.

You cannot boot into safe mode, the f8 key does nothing,
when using the boot menu, u can't boot into a windows disc to reload the operating system, it just goes black.
I did however manage to boot into a linux cd i have and run a HDD test (what passed) and a memory test (what also passed).

It does exactly the same on an external monitor aswell so I am lost with this one.

Any ideas would be appreciated

A:Dell Inspiron M5030 Black Screen When Installing Windows 8.1 on "Getting Devices Ready"

I had the same problem and did this and it worked with no problem....The idea is to slipstream the updated drivers into the ISO/DVD. The drivers that came with the W8.1 DVD dont work well as I was getting the BSOD upon install.
1. Download Winreducer and install all 3rd party software it requires.  Look in the howto.pdf
2. Download the latest AMD Catalyst Drivers from AMD's site (not beta).  Listed as Windows 8 drivers i think.
3. Extract the files to temp dir.
4. Copy the files/drivers from the temp dir (packages\drivers\display\w86a_inf) and the sub dir (B149756) to the winreducer drivers dir (work\integrate\drivers\x64).  So in the x64 dir you should have the cats, msi, infs, and the b149756.
5.  Run winreducer.  Make sure you have handy an iso of the Windows 8.1 DVD.
6.  After you mount your iso, you will be taken to the options and features screen.  You will see presets, appearance, features....on the top.   Leave all options alone EXCEPT the drivers location under System.  Change that to x\WORK\INTEGRATE\DRIVERS\x64.  Dont forget to change the x to your proper location.
7.  Click finish.  Save as iso. Apply.  It will save the modified iso into the winreducer folder.
8.  Burn and install.
9. After you are done installing, install the FULL driver package you downloaded in step 2 by running the setup.exe in main dir.
10.  Thank me LOL

That worked for me on an Inspiron M5030.  I hope my answer is detailed enough.

When I turned it back on, all I got was never ending flashing red, green, blue, white. No end, no escape. 2 futile hours on the phone with Dell will cost our business 2 weeks of down time while computer is sent back to Dell for warranty. Biggest frustration is that this seems to be a 'known' issue for at least 5 years and Dell seems to be infinitely disinterested in the problem their update has caused. 3rd business day since, and Dell is just now getting box in the mail for us to return. Then, another ???? days until we get it back.

What is the exact system model? Does the system power on and stay on or does it go off automatically? Do you see any leds come on and stay on when you press the power button?
Try using a flash light and check if any dim display in visible.
Run the LCD bist - Turn off the system and press and hold the "D" key + power button to turn on the system and it should run the LCD built in self test - see this link for more info -
While running the lcd test and the diags - swivel the lcd back and forth and see if the display comes on.
Also, try the onboard diags - press and hold the fn key + power button to turn on the system and it should initiate the diagnostics - check if any beeps are heard. This will help isolate the source of the issue.
Connect an external monitor and check if the display is seen.

I have a Dell Inspiron 600m which I have been using for just over 2 years with virtually no problems....but about a week ago I was on a plane playing solitaire and my screen showed a few green, blue, and red squares and then went black. It sounded like it was still running, though. I turned it off and tried again a few minutes later, and it was still black but sometimes if I moved the screen back and forth I would get a brief view of my desktop. I hooked it up to an external monitor, and everything is working fine. I have spoken with several places, and I get different answers every time so I was hoping to gain some insight via this forum. Any help you can offer is greatly appreciated, thanks so much for your time!!

I don`t know what answers you have received so far,

but here is mine ;

- the standby switch near the hinges is stuck/dirty or a cable connection is not making..

- the power inverter (suppliies the backlight) is dying.

Both are user fixable tasks, but you may want to have someone look at it.

Also you will need a new dvd player it sounds like yours is no good. But who ever fixes your pc should be able to confirm whether it is good or bad.

A:Dell Inspiron 600m black screen?

Is the screen's power light coming on to show that power is available? If not then either there is no power getting to the screen, or the screen is dead (as in failed in the circuitry)

If power is getting to it, then there is the possibility that the video card in the PC has failed.

I turned my laptop on today and there is a black border meaning that the screen is not being used completely like it was yesterday I measured the part of the screen being used and it measured quot and it is advertised as that but I am sure that this black border was not here yesterday or ever before As seen in this Inspiron video at the entire screen is being used and there is no black border nbsp nbsp however on my there is a clearly visible black border which i used my ceiling fan light to show exactly where it is and 5547 around Inspiron screen border black how thick it is nbsp This is in no way my fault and is apparently a known issue with this model yet I am still expected to pay for a screen replacement This will not be happening and I will gladly switch to a different brand after being a year dell customer if I must do so

see if pressing ctrl+alt+del brings up a screen where you can choose task manager...if so click on file>new task(run) type explorer.exe , should get you to your desktop....create a new user account (admin) and see if it works correctly , if so save your data from other account, then delete it....

good luck

I have read all the posts and ordered a new inverter. It was actually very easy to change the inverter, but alas. After changing the inverter the screen still goes 'black' after a few minutes. It actually goes very very dim. I can barely see the outline of things on the screen. So, if the inverter was not the problem, what is the next thing I can try?

Have you tried running an external monitor? Is it normal or does it go dim too?

just a few hours ago, a small pot of water spilled directly to my old-ish laptop, and it shut down instantly. I unscrewed the bottom and propped up a fan next to the exposed inside, and now the computer turns on again!
However, the screen does not. Whenever I turn it back off, it does so instantly. The same exactly thing happened to this poor laptop 3 years ago, when a quarter-cup of soda entered through the keyboard. Last summer, it worked again!
But, not as much liquid entered the laptop, so I`m sure the damage isn`t as severe. Plus, the computer still turns on, so I`m not completely hopeless.

I don`t want to spend a bunch of money sending it to GeekSquad or Dell, or wait a long time so it can dry off or whatever. Can anybody tell me what to do to get the monitor working again?

I spent a few hours last night searching this as well as other forums and I just couldn t find the answer to my questions I hate to be redundant but I really need some advice Heres the skinny I have a Dell Inspiron running Dell Death of Screen Black Help! Inspiron - - Windows that is roughly a year and a half old out of warranty Last night while using it a bunch of error messages popped up looked a lot like the kind of pop-ups associated with malware viruses I ve seen in Dell Inspiron - Black Screen of Death - Help! the past and before I could read them my computer shut down Upon restarting my computer it Dell Inspiron - Black Screen of Death - Help! went to the Dell splash screen and then went to a blank black screen backlit I ve tried a number of things that I ve read about on other forums to no avail I tried pulling the battery holding the power button for Dell Inspiron - Black Screen of Death - Help! - seconds and then restarting - nothing I tried starting in safe mode but pressing F doesn t work The only buttons that seem to work are F and F I ran the Pre-boot System Assessment quot and everything passes normally I took the bottom cover off and pulled both my HDD and RAm and reinstalled them to make sure they were seated correctly - nothing I plugged in another monitor to see if it was just the screen and the other monitor showed the same black screen What is my next move Any suggestions would be helpful As I have a lot of files on my laptop that I would hate to lose I plan on hooking up the HDD from my laptop to my desktop If I have the HDD from my laptop hooked up in this way would it be prudent to run a scan of the drive to see if there is something I can repair Due to recent flooding all the discs that came with my Dell were lost So I don t have those Any advice would be helpful

Welcome! On my inspiron 1521, when the power is on only a black screen (do not even get to the BIOS), the fan is operating but none of the signaling LED lamps do not light up. I've tried removing the WLAN Card, CMOS battery, RAM. Unless you remove both RAM, flash me right and medium-sized LED flashlight, while left off. Please advise what could be wrong?P.S. This occurred after I did pasword recovery in the User Account, then I could do some work with the admin account, and since then it happens.

nothing loads and when my options appear(safe mode, last configuration, or regular mode) nothing happens if I press anyone of them. It just keeps restarting.

u can try connecting an external monitor from a desktop if u have one or borrow one and see if that monitor shows anything without sounds to me that your monitor on the laptop has gone bad.. the led modules that light it up have gone bad or your video card might be could also be that the motherboard or hard drive is failing.usually if just the monitor is bad it should load up with no problems.hope this helps u.

Hi! I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 with vista preinstalled. I went to power it up today, only to find it has a completely black screen. *No cursor. I have searched forum after forum with similiar issues, but none the same, and i have tried the quick fixes people have recommended to no avail. I power it up, Everything works power light on, i can hear the hd, but screen is completely black. I plugged it into an external monitor, and that is blank as well... Is this a backlight issue? Its not dim, it is black. nothing at all. I tried removing the battery, holding power, and putting it back in, nothing. I inserted vista repair disc... black screen. Regardless of if i am able to fix this issue, i absolutely need the files i have on this laptop.

Alright, my friends laptop is a Dell Inspiron about 3 years old and she said she received a blue screen with error codes, it then restarted and started to load and then it froze during the process.

after that they couldnt get it to turn on, the laptop itself would turn BUT the screen wouldnt.

after a couple hours they managed to turn it on, but it froze again

also the laptop has had issues with the battery/charger

it wont function unless the charger adapter it plugged into an outlet.

if not the screen will go into a dark haze then it would shut off.

maybe this has to deal with it or not, im not sure...

so i tried to put in my windows operating cd, to repair it, but the screen is still black when i insert it. i can here it loaded but i see nothing...

much appreciated

Yeah, so I accidentally bumped my laptop and caused it to fall about 3-4 feet pretty hard onto an amp. It was off, so I turned it on and it is making noises like it is powering up, but nothing appears on the screen. I googled around and when I hold a flashlight up to the screen I can see my desktop. I opened up the LCD panel thingy, disconnected and reconnected the screen inverter to see if it was just a loose connection, but the problem prevails. I just want some opinions on whether or not it is a busted screen inverter or something else before I go buy a new one.

Thanks in advance.

A:Inspiron 1521 Laptop Powering on, but screen is black.

Probably a busted inverter (since you can see your Desktop with a flashlight)
Try connecting an external monitor to it (there's usually a VGA port on the side of most laptops).

You may also want to check to ensure that the screen cable is tightly plugged into the mobo.

On start-up, I get the Dell screen, followed by options for the F-2 and F-12 buttons. I then get a black screen with a blinking cursor in the top left corner.

I tried removing the battery and pressing the power button for 40 seconds, no luck. Starting in Safe Mode is not possible either.

I got some CD's from Dell. One is for the Dell OS, and the other is for Drivers and Utilities.

My main concern is saving whatever files, documents and photos I can. Any idead if that's possible?

Thank you

I am having issues with my Dell 5547 laptop. There is a roughly 1cm border all around the screen which wasn't there before and I noticed it now as my taskbar is adjusted 1cm up but when I put google chrome in full screen it sort of chops the top bar down a bit.
I noticed through google searches other people have had similar issues with Dell laptops however I can't seem to find a solution because every time I try to turn off the "maintain display scaling" it won't let me turn it off.

A:Dell Inspiron 5547 Black Border around screen

The product in the product video has the same black border. It can not be "'fixed''Some of the photos do not seem to have this which is pretty poor form, but the screen size and resolution are as promised.Personally, I would've liked a smaller laptop overall, but if it had to be this size, then I would rather small bezels and a black border, than big slabs of plastic on all sides. It makes it look better when its off and I don't notice it that much.I've also heard people say that this is to do with the touch functionality?? Maybe it gives you a better ability to swipe in from the sides... I don't know.Still, there is nothing wrong with your laptop. If this is a deal breaker for you, you might have a decent argument under consumer laws to get a refund. They really can't show pictures that cover this up and make the screen seem bigger than it is. But the video was there, and the specs are all honest.
