I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

First, thanks guys, and thank god i found you

I am running on Windows XP Home, we have 2 user accounts, today one of the user accounts can no longer access internet anymore, tells us it is firewalls etc, i have tried everything. The other user account is quite happily doing its normal thing, what is that all about and how do i fix it? we haven't installed anything new or made any changes lately, have done all the usual updates and scans. Just cant figure out why one account will and one wont.

Thanks for anything anyone can provide. Tina

Hi

Normally I try to find out myself, but for this problem I think I'll try asking.

We are often recommended to not run in Administrator mode/account. For this reason I created a second account on my Windows XP and have found that Internet Explorer can't get out through the wireless modem.

In the Admin account IE seems to have no problem.

I am new to this forum. So kindly inform me if there is any format in asking queries. It would be helpful in my future queries.
I have an Administrator account. Now i want to create another user account so that others can use my laptop through that account. I want to restrict those users in accessing my documents, folders, files etc and limiting them to certain programs only. I guess this is what is called Setting 'Permissions'.
But i haven't yet understood the clear picture of this. Can anyone explain it in a simple manner and help me out in creating an user account with limited access to my hard drive C and D.

But in safemode after loading some files it displays Safemode in four corners and stops. I've a password protected account and "My Documents" folder is not accesssible to other users. When I try to get the files from "My documents" folder by connecting the SATA HDD to another PC, the folder shows empty and when I try to copy it, it doesn't allow. Pls tell me how to get back the files and folders. After backigup the files I'll format the drive and clean install Win xp. Thanx in advance...

A:Accessing folders/files of Password protected User account in Win XP

Try this on your other pc with the laptops hard drive connected:

Use an Administrators account:

(1)
open my computer and from top menu select tools >Folder options > View :

Then scroll to the bottom of the list in window and UNTICK "Use simple file sharing (recommended)"

click apply at the bottom and apply to all folders at the top and click ok:

In my computer note the drive letter of your problem hdd then run: "chkdsk D: /r"
where "D" is the drive letter of your problem hdd.

Let the process finish (might take a long time).

When diskcheck has finished open the drives and go to the folders that you want to access (dont try to open them yet)!

(2)
Right click on the folder and select properties then select security tab at the top,
Click the owner tab at the top
then in the change owner to section click to highlight the "Administrators (........)administrators"
(.....just means some chars)
tick "replace owner on subcontainers and objects" and apply. then ok to exit that window.
In the properties window that is still open, Highlight the "Administrators" and Tick the "Full Control" tickbox under "allow" Apply and OK to close the window.

You should now now have full control any data in that folder. Repeat step (2) for all the folders you want to get information from. You can also perform step (2) on individual files if you still cant access them.

If this does not work I'm sure someone else will suggest recovery method for you
let us know your progress please.

Hi,

I run a computer repair company and we provide online desktop support, we are having some issues with the support user account on our clients computers, their children are remove the support account (the account our technicians use to access the computer and provide support), so we have to walk the customer through the process of connecting to our support software manually which is causing some delay in our support process, is there anyway to hide this account from the control panel & welcome screen? I've tried the "Special Accounts" way, it does the trick of hiding the user account but the technicians cannot logon via Remote Desktop or LogMeIn. Any suggestions?

Guys I have done this in the past but cannot recall how and don't want to botch.

I had hoped Windows 10 corrected the "rename user account" function but nope. I renamed a User Account due to conflict on the LAN [same name, same spelling] and sure enough, now I have two names for the account, one a slightly hidden original name, and permissions issues. To rid it, I will create an all new Administrator account, move everything over, and demolish the old.
How to do? the docs/files are easy... the settings for apps etc are not as I recall

thx

A:Move/copy-paste User Account data & docs to New User account same sys

Don't even try would be my recommendation.

Make a new Admin account and copy your documents. Set everything else up from scratch.

Most applications will store their stuff in %localappdata% but unless you have some specific app (Windows Live Mail or Outlook or something) tht you must move it would be much better not to try to move things.

If there is something specifically you want to move then ask about that - I've moved the 2 I mention above, for sure someone else has moved something else.

Generally it will be quicker (and cleaner) to start from scratch than trawl though everything hoping to make sure you moved the lot. You'll only end up missing some odd directory and it will not work.

I have a Vista 32 system that has some corruption. Several things like the NET v2.0 framework do not work correctly and it does not do a Windows update without an error. Basically, I know some corruption must exist in the registry.

I have a new drive that I restored a backup from way back when the system was working OK. Naturally there are programs and files that need to be updated. I will have to reinstall the programs that did not exist on the old backup, but I was hoping I could restore my user account profile "in bulk" without just moving individual files. Is there anything wrong with deleting the whole content of the restored user account profile and replacing it with my present profile?

A:replacing a restored user account from backup with present user account

You could use Windows Easy Transfer, I will be back with more information.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

You can also, just back up your files etc and then restore them to the new account.

You have to be careful with anything that you do, to be sure that the corruption is not transferred.

I have a Dell XPS 9100 with Windows 7 Prof. I am using the user account made during the initial bootup of the new computer, to make the desired settings and adding software installations. However after I finish with the initial tweaking, I will reduce the account privileges from Administrator to Standard user level. However, before I change the account level, I will make another user account with administrator user level.

Is there a way to have the new user account have the same settings as the initial user account when it is Simimade, such as copying, etc? I am not looking forward to manually making all of the sames changes/settings that I have made in the initial bootup user account, to the new user account with administrator privileges.

I would very much appreciate any suggestions regarding the above. Thanks Sam

A:Creating a New User Account Similar to an Existing User Account

Hello Scams,

About as close as you can get to this would be to create a new administrator account with the name you like, then copy all of the contents of the old user account's C:\Users\(user-name) folders (including hidden AppData folder) into the corresponding new account's C:\Users\(user-name) folder. After everything checks out ok, you can delete the old user account while logged in the new user account.

It will copy most of your settings, like your Start Menu shortcuts, to the new account, but items stored in the registry, like your desktop background, would have to be reset again.

Hope this helps some,
Shawn

Hi,

We are creating a PDF file in login user's local application folder (C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\folder1) through a custom .Net application and displaying the created pdf file in application.

The above functionality is working for users who are part of domain and added to local vista machine as users (both for administrator and standard user accounts).
The same is not working for local users (both administrator and standard user accounts created in vista box).

File is getting created for any user under their local appdata folder and can able to open from that location, but not displaying from app in case of local system users (admin or standard type).

Can anyone help me what security settings differ between domain users vs local users in vista business 32 bit OS?

Thanks
Padmaja

A:domain account user vs local account user in vista

Policy that is actually causing the problem (or lack thereof) is corresponds to Internet Options control panel, Connections tab, Lan Settings button: Use Automatic Configuration settings.
Having this turned on causes IE to load a configuration file prepared by IT department which makes a whole lot of configuration changes to IE, including remapping the security zones. We can test this by unchecking this option (the default state).
Since the machine is in domain and since we are testing with domain users accounts, I have monitored domain controller pushing down a bunch of policy settings which relax the IE security settings, causing the reports to display.
First, domain settings will resync over time and this checkbox will keep getting turned back on automatically. So you can?t really turn this off, it won?t stay off. I would feel better just testing local accounts, but since the computer is also a member of the domain, machine-specific policies are applied by the domain as well.

I have a user with a machine that was setup with Win 8.1 Home. The machine has been upgraded to 8.1 Pro and joined to a domain (WinSrv 2003). I need to get the conten/configuration from their old local machine user profile to their new domain user profile. I tried to copy the contents of their ../users/<name>/.. folder from the local user profile to the new domain user profile (after they had logged in once, and then logged off). This did not work. When I did the copy, I grabbed all files, including hidden...was that my mistake, or is the issue broader?

In the end....they want their old stuff and configuration under their new credentials/profile.

Thanks!

A:Merge Domain User Account with Local User Account

There are 4 conventional ways of accomplishing this task.

Option 1: Simply copy My Documents, Favorites, Desktop items from one to the other. You will have to setup program options again, may or may not be a big deal

Option 2: Use the Windows Easy Transfer option. Explained here. Vista & Win7 local to domain profile migration

Option 3: Use the Copy To Feature in User Profiles, explained here: Copy a user profile. The steps are outlined for different versions of Windows, but they work the same in Windows 8.

A:The User Profile (Administrator Account) Service failed to logon and then left with only Guest Account in Windows 7

Hi,

Occasionally, Windows might not read your user profile correctly, such as if your antivirus software is scanning your computer while you try to log on.
Please try restarting your computer and logging on with your user account again.

If the issue still persists, please restart in safe mode to log on with the built-in administrator account:
1. Restart your computer and hit F8 multiples times until you see a menu-like screen, if you see the Windows splash screen then repeat this step
2. Highlight and hit enter on Safe Mode with Command Prompt. Try logging in there.
3. If you are able to login, once a command prompt pops up, type: net user administrator password /active:yes (you can specify whatever password you want for the administrator
account.)
4. If you get a message saying "The command completed successfully", then restart your computer by typing: shutdown -r
5. Boot up again pressing F8, but this time choose just Safe Mode.
6. You will be able to login as Administrator with the password you set in Step 3.

Then try the following methods:
Method 1: Fix these user account profile on these computer

Method 2: Log on to Windows and copy your data to a new account
Method 3: Delete the error SID and create a new profile

I have a set of folder I encrypted from my user account. I haven't figured out how to access them from my admin account.

In reverse, while logged on my admin account, I droppped some files into folder encrypted by my user account. I can't access those files when I log on as a user.

How can I get access to all my encrypted files regardless of which logon I use?

A:Access my user account encrypted files from my admin account?

Umm...if you could access encrypted files from another user that would remove the whole point of encrypting the files to begin with.

So this is probably the strangest problem I have ever encountered with Windows About two or three months ago I noticed that my user account had suddenly changed into a guest account I get prompted for an administrator password when trying to do any tasks that require administrator privilege It is not a huge hassle as I know the administrator account password Here a change changed it User can into account, I account how back guest is where it becomes very strange When I turn my computer on it automatically logs me into my user account the guest account When I got into the user accounts section of the control panel and try to manage user accounts it shows exactly zero user accounts on my computer Also when I try to change my user account the guest account to an administrator account precisely nothing happens It User account changed into a guest account, how can I change it back gets evens stranger When I log out of Windows the only user account I can pick from to log back into Windows is the generic quot Administrator quot account My user account is nowhere to be found When I go to the control panel and try to manage accounts only the administrator account is listed There is an option turn on a generic guest account but nothing related to my original user account is shown Again this is in contrast to when I am logged into my user account the User account changed into a guest account, how can I change it back guest account and see exactly zero user accounts listed on the manage accounts screen I feel that I am pretty good at avoiding bad websites and I do have an antivirus program installed not that that will prevent my computer from being infected but I have used it to do full system scans and I have found nothing on my computer every time Additionally I have Windows updates set to be automatically installed so all of the updates have been installed on my version of Windows I tried asking Microsoft support directly all I got was that no user accounts showing up under the manage user accounts tab is a pretty bad sign and that in order to fully diagnose the problem I would need to sign up for the quot Assure Plan quot or whatever it was called which cost for one year Forget that option for now Does anyone know how to resolve this issue How can I switch my original user account from a guest account and then how could I make it an administrator account once I have retrieved it so-to-speak from being a phantom guest account I mean I know the administrator password and all and so I have been able to essentially use my computer as if nothing is wrong But this whole issue seems very very strange and so I want to see what you guys have to say about it I hope these are not the signs of a more serious and potentially major issue Thanks in advance for anyone's help with this

A:User account changed into a guest account, how can I change it back

Hi and welcome to the Forum
When you refer to the generic Administrator Account do you mean the Account that is hidden in Windows 7? If so did you activate it using this:
Built-in Administrator Account - Enable or Disable If you did the above then this is strange as forgetting the "Hidden admin account you must have at least one ordinary Admin account in Windows 7. You can't operate the system without one!!

I just remembered that I could CTL ALT DELETE twice at the Welcome screen to get to the logon and type in Administrator. I haven't used it in years, so it did not occur to me. I am now in my administrator user account. If I delete the new user account, will it go back to the way it was before? Or will I screw something else up by doing that?

Hi,
In our company, there are few computers where we can access only limited user accounts. I went to control panel >> user accounts >>...it shows the only limited user account name like "xyz". It doesn't show us any administrator account names, why is it so? And how I can make it happen in my personal computer?

A:xp shows only limited account name in user account control panel

Because you are logged in as a Limited User, so you can't make changes to the computer. Speak with your Network Administrator at your company.
At the log in screen hit CTRL+ALT+DEL 3 times fast. This will give you the traditional Windows Log In Screen. If you have the Built In Administrator accounts password, you can log in as Administrator and create a new Admin user account.

Hi guys, just the title of the thread pretty much says it all.
want to create a really limited user account for the kids of the house. I already have a user account, and have tried to set up a limited one through control panel. But that asks me to first create an Administer Account, which i already have. So it would be pointless if i had two Administer Accounts showing up on the welcome screen.
Also i'm kind of a novice at this, but i am keen to learn. so help with privacy and parental control would be appreciated.

Thanks

I've just returned home after being away for 2 weeks, and something has happened to my PC while I was away.
While booting up, it tried to perform a disk check but failed as it 'could not access' the main drive. So it dropped me straight into my usual user account loin page. After entering my password it took a very long time to load my profile, then ended up giving me a generic user account.
All of the files from my actual account are still under the 'Users' folder, but this account itself is empty. It has the right name, but this account's documents folder is just called Public.
About half the desktop icons and the entire contents of the recycle bin have been retained from the old account.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

I am using Windows 7 Pro 64x and apparently the default user account (Owner) that I use is not working correctly. Unless I have UAC set to Never Notify, I cannot open Control Panel or UAC again. When I try, I get the error message listed below. I have created a second user account as Administrator and it works correctly.

I would like to know if there is any way to fix this problem short of a clean install of Windows. If not, is it possible to move all of my settings to the user account that works correctly and delete the one that does not.

Thanks

I don't know how to retrieve my administrator account. I've been guessing several usernames and passwords for the "Other User" account (even my admin. username and password) but no luck.

Since this a security forum, I thought it would be nice to see how many of our members bother creating a Standard User Account or simply use the default Admin User Account.

Anyone is free to explain their own reasoning for choosing a type of account if he/she wants to.

Currently I use a Standard User Account. Decided to try one a few days ago, and so far I like it. I don't find it that much annoying or bothersome(so far)

My Windows7 suddenly displayed a default desktop. I then did an unsuccessful system restore, tried the undo and got stuck.

From there on, when I want to log in I end up at the error message "The user profile service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded".

I tried to activate the administrator account by using "net user administrator /active:yes". The command executes, but administrator never shows up on the login screen.

I cannot start Windows 7 in safe mode. A few seconds after the safe mode login screen appears the computer restarts automatically. No administrator account is listed here either.

I tried kb/947215, but only S-1-5-18, 19 and 20 show up (regedit from the command prompt, since I cannot log into Windows 7 in any mode.

The startup repair doesn't find a fault. What now? I want to avoid a clean install, if at all possible...

I tried background check on the machine to check it for possible malware or virus infection but couldn't find anything.
could it be the user profile settings getting changed athomatically due several usages or could it be log file getting full or needs to be cleared?

Its safer to always run programs with lower privileges, and run as administrator when needed. Personally, I like my UAC set to the max. Basically, it stops programs from messing with your PC without permission.

I have just one workarround: if i login with my adminaccount and logoff, the userpicture of my privateaccount appears again and the login is possible.

What could this problem be related to?

greetings
Nico Müller

Kind a strange problem indeed, but seems to be solved.

Thanks anyway,

I noticed an annoying problem when deleting a user account from your PC Basically Windows Store app got into a pickle on my main user account I fixed it with a restore point But it a traces of user Deleting account behind user in leaves that C:\users wasn't working on my wife and son's user accounts As they barely use them and have little to lose I decided to delete their accounts and then re-create them The intention being to see if Windows Deleting a user account leaves traces of that user behind in C:\users Store worked correctly after doing so It did I deleted the accounts restarted machine for clean slate and set them up again All good but something that I noticed and really annoyed me was when I went into network Deleting a user account leaves traces of that user behind in C:\users I could see the WMP sharing media projecting my wife's name twice and the same for my son Looks a bit rubbish I went on my TV into media sharing and could see the duplicate WMP clients listed on here So as a test I deleted my son's account again and re-created and sure enough now three WMP shares from his Deleting a user account leaves traces of that user behind in C:\users name So I looked under C users and can see using my son as an example three folders son's name son's name-pc name son's name -pc name So this is why I see the duplications because good old Windows doesn't fully delete the user from C users I tried deleting those old folders but got met with either 'in use' or 'denied - you need admin access' Of course my account is an administrator so that doesn't compute I tried taking ownership of those folders and got met with all kinds of resistance but I deleted enough of them to stop the duplicate WMP shares Basically there is nothing in the folders and sub folders but just having a Roaming Microsoft Windows Libraries folder is enough to create a WMP share even for deleted users I don't know if not running the WMP share service would make a difference in that you can delete the old user But this seems a bit lame and is another one to add to my poor experiences using Windows Of course I want to keep the WMP share feature I could of turned it off to stop this duplication but it would of been completely switched off which wasn't the answer Anyway I just wanted to share this in case this causes other users wasted hours of headaches like it did me yesterday

Having the same issue here. A user account started misbehaving so I used Settings>Accounts to remove it. But the user *folder* is still in c:\users and won't let me delete - even though I have administrator rights. How can you delete these folders?

My grandmother was recently hacked and she changed all her passwords herself (yay!). However she did not write down her new local user account password for her laptop.

I tried downloading OPHCrack, I burned it as an ISO file and put it on a DVD-R(only thing I had on hand) and i changed the boot order on her BIOS menu to had the DVD drive as the first priority. It does not run....I hear the disk drive moving, or spinning but the program does not run. Are there any other options or do I have to do a complete system restore to bypass this? Also if that is what I have to do how do I do that without being in her control panel?

I need to add another standard user. I have one admin account and one standard user.

After adding the second standard account name and password on Control Panel
I get the confirmation that the new user can now sign in.

However,I get this famous message that the profile service cannot open.

I looked into C:users and find
Default.migrated
Default
Public
Administrator
First standard user

But not the newly created user account. Nor can I find it in the Registry ProfileService.

Why does Window lye to me saying the new user account is available but it did not create it?

Have you tried that?

Is FF's private browsing setting causing the login site to always ask to send a confirmation code. It happens when I start a whole new session clearing out cookies etc. It acts like I'm logging in for the first time. This code is only supposed to be a one time thing. But every time I log-in at a different day the site asks for a confirmation code to be entered and then I have options to which it sends me this code. i.e. to my phone or email.

Hello,
Cousin has an old Toshiba he bought pre loaded with W7 Home Premium. He was running it as he got it and I had him add a standard user account for general use and a quasi-administator account for working. He has been running that way for a while. Today I needed him to look in the C:\ Users account and it shows the quasi-Administrator, his standard user and a Administrator.
Is it hard to get rid of the Administrator account, that isn't showing up in User's Accounts from the control panel.
Thanks for any help!

A:No Administrator shown in User Account, but shows in C:\User ?

Hello Glenn,

The "C:\Users\Administrator" user profile folder is for the built-in elevated "Administrator" account. It's only created the first time that the built-in Administrator account has been enabled and logged in to.

When the built-in "Administrator" account is disabled, it will no longer be displayed in "User Accounts" (Control Panel) or the log on screen. However, it's user profile folder will still be there since it contains that account's personal settings and such.

According to the windows.microsoft.com website "Your user account prevents anyone who is using a standard account on your computer from seeing your files." My wife and I share our computer: I have an administrator account and she has a standard user account. Yet when she is logged in she can access my documents and read them via File Explorer, though she cannot delete them. This seems to contradict what Microsoft say or am I missing something? Grateful for any advice.

Since writing the above I have found that the same situation exists on the other computer that we share, but in this case she is able to delete the documents as well.

Sorry, everyone, I think I've solved this. I must have set particular sharing permissions and forgotten I'd done so.

Hi guys.

Windows 8 screwed up my old user account so I had to transfer to a new one. Unfortunately that new one was named after my email address for some reason as I logged on as a microsoft account rather than a local one. Hence in my computer its called users/email_000

This is very annoying.

I've read tutorials on this from other versions of windows ie. here : User Profile Folder - Change User Account Folder Name - Windows 7 Forums

However it doesn't work for Windows 8. When I try one of the earliest steps (renaming the user folder itself) I cant do it as its 'open in another program' even though that User is not logged on.

Any workarounds? Ive created another admin local user, to no avail.

Thanks for your help!

A:CHANGING User Account Folder names as well as User Name

Hello Chookyman, and welcome to Eight Forums.

The best method to do this is to create a new user account with the name you want, make it an administrator account type or leave as a standard user, sign out, sign in to the new account, then delete the old account.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

hi people what i want to accomplish is to set an user account type automatically after creating one as you may know when you create an user account the system ask you what account type to apply for that new user the default user and user group or account privilege type choice are Administrator and Limited i want to user account type and group or user privilege create an account that is not too limited but neighter with same privilege as an administrator i went to the Local Users and Groups at the Microsoft Management Console now on MMC and assigned a different Group to each users i desired task accomplished but the problem is that i don t know how many user the computer will have the owner of the computer are primitive human that don t know how to configure the system i neighter want any of them to have administrative right because they have internet access and they still on the experiment process meaning that they re propense to click YES to any message even if those are viruses most of them don t read english the solution i thought was to assign only one user the administrative right so they can install and uninstall software and perform other administrative task as creating more user accounts there is anyway that after creating an user account the system automatically assign the user a specific Groups for example the built-in object Power User or among the choice on user account tool add an new item or modify the existing items or if there is anyway to modify the privilege and right for an built-in object Group the Limited account pertain to the User Group so instead of automatically assign other group the new account inherit the privilage right limitation from the default group any help or comment is welcome thanks nbsp

A:User account opens as guest account

Your user profile has become corrupted. If you have Windows XP Pro (not home) at the login screen, pres CTRL+AL+DEL 3 times fast. This will give you the classic login screen. Here log in as Administrator, leave the Password blank unless you set a password for the admin account. Here go to Start/Run and type control userpasswords and press enter. Create a new user account with admin rights. Log out of the Administrator account and login as the new user. Browse to C:/Documents and Settings open up your old user profile folder and Copy the My Documents, Favorites, Desktop and Start Menu folders and Paste them into your new profile folder overwriting the empty ones.

I was using a friend's computer.
I created another administrator account while I was on her administrator account, so when she woke up, she can go on using her own account without interrupting what I am doing -even mistakenly- on the other account.
I wanted to start a program, and the program told me that it was not licensed. I switched on to her account and started the program and saw that it was licensed and started without any problems.
Why would this happen?
Both accounts were logged in by the way.
And I also were able to hear sounds from her account such as message income, etc. while I was on my account. Is that normal behavior?

A:Licensed on One User Account, not licenced on another account...

Welcome
It sounds like the word license is from the software and not the OS. If the software must be paid for, it does not recognize you a a legit user, this MAY be a programming error. You may want to make sure that you have permission, to run it (from the OS point of view).

Is there any possible way to make it so that my normal account can be transformed into an administrator account?

In order to make one of my games function properly, I need to enter the task manager and set the affinity so that the game uses 1 core to operate. In order to do this, I have to run the application, switch user accounts (from mine to the admin), set the affinity there, then switch back.

It gives me no option to apply administrative settings when I try to set the affinity on my main account, it just tells me I can't.

Any help would be great, thanks!

Hi all.

I am using Windows XP Media Center Edition and I would like to use my current account as a Limited user account.

I realise that I will need at least one administrator account on my PC -- so I go into user accounts, create a new administrator account, then I try to change my current account to a limited account, but it will not let me!

See the screenshots;

I would like Admin to be administrator, and Dell07 to be Limited... I do not have the option to change Dell07 to limited for some strange reason.

I have managed to do this on my parents PC easily. I simply created another Administrator account, then changed their account to a limited one. I don't understand why this will not work on Windows XP MCE...

Any idea why this is happening?!

A:Help change my account to a limited user account!

You should log-on to the administrator account thru safe mode and this will allow you to change the account you want to so it will be a low-admin account. You can not change the account you are logged into t anything other than the account it is because it is the active account.

I planned to try the frequent advice to do as much work as possible in a quot Standard user quot account rather than in the quot Administrator quot account I created a new account quot me Standard quot On opening the account I found that I could not access any of quot my quot personal files That seems fair enough I should probably have guessed that would happen So I user account Admimistrator or Standard account? deleted the new quot me standard quot account I'm now thinking about the possibility of downgrading my quot me Administrator quot account to a Standard account But is that going to make any difference Here is the description of UAC from quot Help and Support quot quot User Account Control UAC is a feature in Windows that can help prevent unauthorized changes to your computer UAC does this by asking you for permission or an administrator password before performing actions that could potentially affect your computer's operation or that change settings that affect other users quot Currently as Administrator I need to click the UAC popups that appear frequently I'm not complaining I know the reason for the UAC If I downgrade to a Standard user I will still need Admimistrator account or Standard user account? to click the UAC and probably need to give an Administrator password Again I don't mind doing that But what will I gain in terms of security Another frequently-mentioned reason to use a Standard account is that it restricts viruses and malware to the account of the current user However I'm the only user of this laptop so there are no quot other users quot to protect Any comments

A:Admimistrator account or Standard user account?

My best advice is to simply avoid infection and contamination by getting yourself a good Anti-Virus and Firewall. Your common sense should be the first line of defense when it comes to downloading and executing programs on your computer though, Anti-Virus and Firewall protection are to be considered a last line of defense.

I've never heard of using a "Standard" account to improve security coverage, but I can see how it would help. Though I've used administrator accounts forever and never had any problems with viruses or other infections. I personally disabled UAC after a week or two of using it on Vista, it's to obnoxious, intrusive, and completely useless. It's quite a bit better on Windows 7 though, especially since you can set a "drag-bar" to the level of protection you want.

I am trying to recover some information from a hard drive that wouldn't boot properly by setting it to slave and accessing via a healthy drive running windows XP, the data seems to be intact but I do not know (if its possible) how to access the personal documents which I had in my personal account in the older drive. Is there anyway to access the personal documents without having to be in that account (something that has become and impossibility at the moment)

Thank you

My friend's PC motherboard toasted and before that he did the incredibly stupid accessing account a from protected computer another option of adding a accessing a protected account from another computer password to the account and checking the option to protect his files So when I hook up his hard drive to an IDE to USB converter on an XP machine it just says access denied and won't open his profile folder He knows his old password but it's not like XP uses full disk encryption so is there a way to force it to pop up a window that lets me input the account's password and then lets me accessing a protected account from another computer access the files or are they just marked as protected and that's that And before you ask unfortunately no I don't have a virtually identical PC to stick the hard drive in to boot it up and copy the files after logging in Here's the fun part I hook it up to my WIndows Home Premium machine and I can just go to the security tab on a folder's properties and accessing a protected account from another computer change me to the owner and list its contents but not copy it off the drive If I choose to apply the ownership change to all subfolders and files it fails If I go into the folder and change owner permissions on the files one at a time it appears that I can copy them off the drive Since I need hundreds of photos off it to make a website for him one a time isn't going to work So since Windows seems to have more features for the whole NTFS protection thing than XP Home is there a way in Windows where I can plug in the password that's protecting all these files and get access to them

A:accessing a protected account from another computer

Hello,

The encryption is tied to your friend's user account, not necessarily his hardware, etc. The files are literally encrypted, so the only thing you can do would be to somehow boot into his user account.

Since you don't have another computer you can boot up the old hard drive with, your best bet would be to replace the dead motherboard on the old machine.

Hello folks,
I hope someone can point me in the right direction here.... my usual user account on vista is very limited - I can't even send items to the recycle bin without it freaking out! But when I click on the Administrator account tab (on start up), the 'welcome' message displays, as does the round swirly symbol to show it's processing - but then - NOTHING! The message continues to be displayed and nothing else happens!! I just don't know what's going on, is the fault with the computer processor or hard drive, as opposed to the actual software?
Any ideas?

A couple of weeks ago, I was using my computer, when a power cut struck. When it ended, I logged back onto my user account and tried to access my internet, but nothing happened. I tried to access my documents...nothing happened. I couldn't access ANYTHING on my user except Windows Task Manager. I tried signing into another account and this was fine, so I created a new account and transferred my documents and other items over.

Earlier today, there was another power cut whilst using my computer, and the same thing has happened again. I've tried re-starting, but that doesn't work. I just cannot access anything at all, no matter how hard I try.

Does anybody know what the problem could be, and if so, is there a way of fixing it? I feel like screaming at the moment!

Thanks in advance.
