2 PSUs in one tower?

Q: 2 PSUs in one tower?

Has anyone ever tried 2PSU's in one tower? I ask because I'd like just one to run my video card <ATI X800GTO> so I'd like to know if that's worthwhile since I have a few laying around that are not all that great. I know it's probably a stupid question, go easy on me.... ;>)

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I've never heard of that being done. I don't know where you would get the room. I would recommend that you get a new Psu with greater wattage.

hi, I am going to upgrade my graphic card to ATI 5770 so I need a new power supply which has power about 550--600 watt. But the most frustrating problem is that I failed to find a proper power supply with the correct dimension.
I have an HP pavilion e9300 which uses a very wired power supply tower-150mm(W) 86(H) 140(D). But so far all the PSUs I found is the standard size --150mm(W) 86(H) 150(D) which cannot fit in my setup.

So could any PC God give me some suggestion, please??
Is any PSU with the size of my tower or can I just simply install a bigger PSU which can still successfully power up the comptuer?

Thx in adance.

If the power supply will physically fit your case, it should work fine with your computer. Will the extra 10mm interfere internally with anything inside the PC?

does anyone know of a cheap and efficient PSU that has a 12V rail of 30A or more. i plan on buying an ati radeon X1950 Pro. it requires me to have a 12V rail of 30A or more. o it has to be more than 450W also. help would be appreciated.

I run an Ultra XFinity 600 watt $69 PSU. It has 2 12 volt rails. One of the 12v rails=20 amps, the other=18 amps. Total:=38 amps. My 8800 GTS requires no less than 26 amps and this PSU never misses a beat.

i'm just wondering what you guys think about these power supplies. i bought for my current desktop and it works fine, but i'm building a new one and was wondering if this is a decent power supply to use or if you think i should use a different brand. if so, what would you suggest?

Some days ago I posted a question on this forum about my crashing computer, and recieved the answer that it was because of a lack of power in the PSU. Well, I recently came across the battery from my 2 year old computer with a crashing graphics card, so I figured why not use the old PSU in the new computer. The PSU I'm currently using is a 500W Chieftec, and the one I found is a 250W Hipro HP-D250AA0

Anyway, my question is; Is it possible too have your computer running on two PSUs?

Thanks, Elevero.

A:2 PSUs in one computer?

I recently came across the battery from my 2 year old computer with a crashing graphics card

No, there is only room for one PSU. You have only one connector to each of the hardware devices. The 250 Watt PSU is too under powered to power the computer without failure in the future. And the 500 Watt is OK but we suggest 550 Watt or higher and a name brand.
You can replace the CMOS battery from any electronics shop or anywhere that sells batteries. If your Graphics Card is crashing, replace that. Or to test if it is that, run off the onboard video.

hi frens, ive a problem with some psus recently. I bought an Enhance460w and a Powersafe 400w. The thing is that i suspect the quality and Real output of these 2 PSUs. Is there any way i can check the real output using software and hardware?

A:need some advice on PSUs

Speed fan will work, also BIOS may have a temp/voltage monitor.

Software is going to be off a little. Use a DVM to know exact voltage output, and cheak under load. Yellow=12v, red=5v, and orange=3.3v.

A:Clueless regarding PSUs

Firstly, how do you know that your PSU is at fault?

Any decent 400W PSU will be more than enough for your PC. What's your budget?
Relevancy 47.3%

I have a 400W PSU and i recently upgraded from an 8800GT to a GTX 560 Ti on my LGA775 platform and I'm afraid 400W isn't enough at all. The PSU i'm going to buy is ATX12V v2.2 but the only thing i could find on my mobo is that it's ATX12v can't find anything v2.2. I was wondering if it was compatible. Another thing is what is the chances of a PSU from Antec arriving DOA or dying after short use. I don't wanna wait 25-30 days for something to arrive and find out that it's dead with no way to use the warranty.

why would you want to connect 2 power supplies? If you are looking for redundency then there are modular supplies that have multiple units within a single supply you can remove and replace if they should go bad. If you are just looking for extra cables and wattage then the answer is no.

A:2 PSUs powering 1 computer

marinkvasina said:

We have used a cable like this
to provide common ground for both PSUs.Click to expand...

Common ground it not the purpose of that splitter. The splitter provide a "power good signal" from the motherboard to both PSU's, a green light so to speak. Without this power good signal, the PSU's would shut down almost immediately after supplying power to the motherboard. The power good signal is what keeps the power supplies functioning. If the motherboard senses a problem, it will not provide a power good signal.

The power supply may not function, if there is a problem internally with the power good sensor circuit. I had a power supply go out on me and without knowing for sure, I suspect this circuit.

marinkvasina said:

My question is, how safe is this?Click to expand...

I would say it is very safe seeing as there are cases designed to support two PSU's.

In the last two months I have had two corsair cx600v2 power supplies that have died (almost exploded) in the same fashion: The first time it just dropped in the middle of a game of Dead Island and I smelled smoking from the PSU. Took it out and saw that there was a white substance (I'm assuming battery acid) pouring onto the psu. I recently got around to buying another power supply (same make and model). I plugged it in and no sooner than when I clicked the power button did the exact same thing happen again. Keep in mind I changed sockets and bought an $80 surge protector.

I'm wondering if anyone has stories or resources about repairing bad power supplies. Most people treat their PSUs like they're disposable, but with some experience with a soldering iron and a multimeter I'd bet common PSU problems can be remedied easily! I expect most problems boil down to a single bad component (which could be replaced for under $1).

Naturally, it was a bad power supply that got me thinking of this in the first place. Specifically, it's a ThermalTake Silent Purepower 450 W. Disconnected from the computer the DC output voltages are spot on, but connecting the 24 pin powercord to the motherboard lowers the output voltages by ~20% (way out of range for the computer to run). Connecting more components continues to lower the output voltages. Sounds like a fixable problem to me, but I couldn't find much help in google searches.

A:Repairing PSUs - Stories and resources

Sounds too risky to me. I expect that is why you don;t see many how-tos. A wrong move and you could fry some expensive parts and pieces. I don't think that is the best PSU in any case so why not spend effort on it?

A friend of mine who has recently built a AM2 4200+ system is saying that this power supply does not support "dual cores"?? Does this make sense?

He is saying that newer power supplies have some sort of special provision to handle both the cores properly, and just any power supply won't do. Is this correct?

Well I'm currently clocking out with 13 fans in my system, many are stock, but include some bay fans. Anyway I was wandering if two PSU's would do the job, and if so, how could you set it up.

Would the PC be sitting with its side off while the wires run in or out?

Would it put through water cooling ports, on the back on the case?

Is there a special "self standing" case out there built especially for PSU's that are outside the case?

Any of these questions being answered would help.

A:What about 2 Power Supply Units, PSUs?

Just get a bigger wattage PSU (and a good one)
Note I have no idea what PSU wattage you presently have, or how that co-incides with the amount watts used by your hardware (ie multiple fans)
But PSU can go all the way to Kilo watts

Oh, you can't run three of these cards in SLI, only two. Each card has only one place on top to put the SLI bridge, so, no three way. You could always use a third card for PhysX though.

Alright, I have this game named Sim Tower, which is a tad bit slow (but shouldnt be). I can manage to install it fine, and even play it off the CD quite well if I wanted to. Although when I start the game, it automatically goes into fast mode (which means time is fast forwarded until there is activity with the people in the game). It hasnt got too much to do with fast mode, but this is when it effects the game speed a lot (mainly the cursor though). I take fast mode off, and then the cursor drags all over the screen, making it nearly impossible to play. At most last time I got to put in some office floors, but Alt F4 Seemed like the best option after that. I have tried running it in compatability mode, and even with this kinda of patch. Any suggestions on how to stop my cursor from slowing down?

My new 'puter is runing XP Home.

I would like to put the old HD into my new machine.
Is this asking for big trouble or should this be ok?

A:old HD new tower

here's the depends. if you installed xp on fat32 then yes you can install your old ME HD as a slave and be able to read it...however if you installed xp in NTFS then you'r just plain outta luck. you can't read fat32 with ntfs

A:New SSD for old tower?

Well there are three issues I see;
1 Your mb only has sata 2 ports and that will limit or throttle the speed of a modern ssd. It will still be a HUGE improvement over a mech hard disk however you will be somewhat limited.
2 Next issue is that xp [your os] does not support TRIM or wear leveling for the ssd. This causes a degrading of performance over time. Sometimes the drive mfg has a utility that will do basically the same thing. Another option is to make an image of the ssd and store the image on a second hd, external, etc. Once the image is made, boot with parted magic linux and secure erase the ssd. Once the ssd is secure erased, restore the image. This will also restore the ssd drive's speed.
3 XP does not apply the correct partition offset for a ssd. This can be edited manually using linux OR you can create the partitions with a win7/win8 boot disk then install xp.

Other than the above issues, you can install a ssd drive and you will see a significant improvement in performance however not as much as with a modern mb supporting sata3.

Im working on Compaq something tower. Doing a favor for the mother in law. This tower is her co-workers and asked if I could look at it.

At first glance, all the internal cables and wired are firmly attached. So I direct my attention to the power source, It is equipped with a green led light (to tell its getting power I assume). This little green light is not lighting up when plugged in. Its doing nothing. Power source model is a Bestec ATX-250-12z

Any ideas or suggestions?

A:Tower not getting power?

Hi garaboldi,

This might sound daft, but I've done it before. Have you made sure that you have plugged it in and switched on at the wall socket? Is there power to the wall socket? Try with another appliance that you know is working. Does the fuse need changing in the plug, and is the wiring secure?

Hi all.

Not too long ago, I saw this amazing looking pc that was part of a contest that featured an LCD screen on the front of the tower. It was blue, and looked almost like it read off all of the specs for the interior of the pc, as well as the hard-drive and mobo running capacity and such. I am pretty sure it also acted as a fan controller. But it seemed ultimately like it was just there to read off the pc specs of usage and such.

It looked to be about the size of half the case, and probably pretty expensive. It looked really sharp and useful though.

Anyone know what this is or where to find it or something similar?

Also, anyone tried out those fingerprint readers for your pc that removes the need to remember any password? They are only 40 bucks so its worth a shot...any reviews?

it is happening, per the new PC case layouts were seeing with the PSU on the floor of the case sucking straight from the outside & venting it back out the rear..

but the old case design has worked perfectly for years with the PSU at the top, thats why a 140mm fan was added to newer PSUs to help remove hot air from the case

but its not really an issue, your PSU will never die from the extra heat of your components...

it is on the other hand possible to create a ''dead spot'' where the PSU fan cannot extract due to chassis fan configs, but each case is different so its something you would have to test.

move your chassis fans to different locations each time holding your hand by the PSU exhaust, see if the flow changes at all. (i doubt it will)

i always try to put a ''positive'' pressure inside the case (more intake than exhaust), so air cant be sucked in through cracks & drive bays, thus lowering dust coverage

but a PSU can get very hot so i wouldnt worry too much....

Hi all

I have a Tuniq Tower 120 on an LGA 775 board.

Does anyone know whether I can get the appropriate rear bracket to fit it on the Gigabyte EX58-UD5 motherboard with an i7 920.

I checked Tuniq's site but they seem to have bought out a new tower for the i7 and I can't find any info on whether it'll fit or I need a bracket(or whether I can get one)

I would have thought the original 120 would do a good job cooling an i7 and I don't want to spend more than I need.

Anyone know anything or have any comments?

Thanks, John

A:Can I use my Tuniq Tower 120 with this lot?

I don't own one.

A little web searching makes it look like Tuniq hasn't produced a backplate and retention bracket for this model for Socket 1366.

I suppose that they could if they wished. My cooler is a Thermalright Ultra 120. It was an existing product to which Thermalright added Socket 1366 support. (Works well on an I7 920 at 3.8 GHz.)

I recently performed a clean install of Win7 HP on this older tower and it's been running very well. Trouble is, it sounds like a vacuum cleaner on its last legs...very loud noises. I'm not qualified to identify a correlation between the upgrade and the outrageously noisy internals, but I've been given suggestions about poor heatsink mounting a la dried up thermal compound, or bad fans' bearings, or hard drive, etc.

I took a snapshot of the inside of the chassis with the side panel removed for uploading of the jpeg here, because I'm not savvy enough to understand where the heatsink is I'm happy to replace fans and even the heatsink if someone will please just tell me how to find it

Thank you.

A:Noisy tower

Is it definitely louder than before the clean install, with no new components? That is, is this a new development?

The heatsink refers to the CPU cooler in the lower right portion of that picture. If the heatsink were mounted poorly, it might cause the CPU fan to speed up in an attempt to lower temperatures. It wouldn't be my first guess for the source of noise, but that fan may be working very hard or going bad.

Check your temperatures and fan speeds with a tool such as HWInfo.

Fans spinning above 1000 rpm are typically audible--some more than others.
Get your ear in there and listen. You can stop case fans or even the CPU fan for a second or two to see if the noise disappears---that's one way to determine if it is a fan issue.

Listen near the power supply, probably upper left in that pic. It has a fan also.

Does the noise sound like a wooshing? That's most likely fans or air turbulence.

Whines can be drives, power supply coils, or even motherboards.

Hard drives are probably lower left in your pic.

Cases can be noisy in general, some more than others. You might have a vibration component to the noise from the front bezel rattling a bit--or just from poor design where noise leaks out through gaps or vents.

It's not easy to quiet a noisy case. The best way to get a quiet PC is to assemble it from quiet components, rather than trying to quiet it after the fact.

Some fans are noisier than others, even if working properly. You'd have to replace them with known quiet fans--preferably of the largest diameter that will fit the mount.

Several months ago I bought an Elite Cooler Master Tower It was in Tower Air Flow for a build for a file server I liked it because it had a section on the front for quot hard drives I figured I could take advantage of that Plus it was cheap Also I liked other Cooler Master Products and I figured that they knew how to deal with air flow I ve messed with stacking hard drives in the slots to see how well air flow would work I have since wondered whether or not I made the right decision Any Air Flow in Tower thought about air flow in all the hard drive slots is welcome Here are some pictures http www coolermaster-usa com product php product id http www newegg com Product Product aspx Item N E To a lesser extend I also bought a module for converting the quot bay into at least quot hard drives There is air flow around the hard drives albeit the air flow space is quot http www coolermaster-usa com product php product id http www newegg com Product Product aspx Item N E amp Tpk cooler master module nbsp

A:Air Flow in Tower

It's not specific to just that Cooler Master case. In any situation where you stack numerous drives, air flow is impeded as there typically isn't much space between the drives. You would overcome the issue by using fans to suck more air through the case.

As for the module, it converts 3 (not the - inferring one) 5.25" bays. I prefer the Icy Dock model as the drives are all accessible from the outside.

If I bought a pair of tower stereo speaker is there anyway to hook them to the PC?

There is a possibility but there is a need to know what kind of in/output jack on the logitech speakers are being used. Usually the 3.5mm stereo plug jack type can be soldered on the speaker wires and then connect on the logitech 3.5 jacks audio out. The in audio jack then would be connected to your PCs audio jack. There are also dual 3.5 mm male/female to RCA audio adapter if you prefer the RCA cable. All audio outputs should pass the amplified speakers going to the PC.

A: Help Deciding on a tower Pc

Do you have a budget for this?

You don't mention hard drives. You should certainly get an SSD for at least Windows and applications. You can use an ordinary hard drive to store data.

I don't game, but I'd guess gaming types would tell you to emphasize the graphics card. There are several steps above the GTX660 that you could consider, but it may be perfectly fine for the games he intends to play. I have no idea.

What resolution will he use?

An i7-4790 would likely be considered overkill for gaming, but if it's within your budget, knock yourself out.

Likewise with 16 GB of RAM rather than 8.

What case do you have in mind?

What power supply?

I assume overclocking is not on your agenda since you haven't chosen a K series processor. In that case, there's no reason to splurge on a Z97 motherboard.

Any suggestions for checking to make sure they have all of my backup material on file in case this older system takes a dive?

Hi...Lately, I have been getting noises in my tower when I run on line tests like Panda Active Scan and Window Security Trojan Scan that are like those that emergency vehicles make in Europe. It doesn't happen with Housecall antivirus or when I run Ad Aware se. Sometimes the same noise comes when I run Spybot 1.3. The noise stops at the end of the scan and no viruses are found. What can I do to stop this because it does get rather annoying?

I have a Dell 17"" LCD TV/Monitor. The only way I've found to have the sound play through the computer's sound system is to run a line from the earphone jack on on LCD to a "hole" on the tower. Actually did that once upon a time. However, when moving everything to a new desk, we unplugged ALL the cables, lines, whathaveyou. Now, no one can find the bloody slot, hole, or whatever it is that the line from the earphone jack is to go into. Please be rather explicit as I'm in a wheelchair, and thanks to my new set up I can't actually see the back of the tower. My helpers are able to do so, but don't have a clue as to what anything is on the back. Thanks much, Jack My system: Windows XP. Dell 2300.

I have a Xigamatek CPC-T45UB-U01 Asgard Chassis tower where the PSU is a top mount.

Does it make a big difference when the PSU is mounted at the top or bottom?.

I really need to know as i have just purchased a new mb, i was also thinking of purchasing a case with a bottom mount for a psu.

I need to hear some info before i make my mind up.

As always, i appreciated the advice.

A:PC tower PSU top or bottom?

I can always mod the the case, adding a new hole on the top in the centre for a fan.

I'm looking to upgrade my dad's computer setup. He has a Gateway with Windows 98 -- all hardware from around '97 or '98. It needs upgraded so I wanted to get something like this new tower, but he wants to keep the same monitor. Will a 10+ year old monitor work with a modern tower?

A:Getting a new tower for old monitor

it will definitely work , it will just look like crap.. its totally worth getting an LCD if what you currently have is an older CRT monitor

What do you reckon folks???????????????

A:Whats the best pc tower?

You aren't likely to get a clear answer to this one. It all depends upon what you are trying to accomplish and what your goals are.

Some will insist of full towers, others need/want smaller cases. Some people love windows and lights, and others don't care for them at all.

Generally speaking, there are lots of recommendations on this forum for

my tower on my emachine w5243 will not come on, I hear the motor pwer up but it will not come on, the on button will light for a second and then it will go off

A:tower problwm

What kind of motor do you have in it? V6, V8 or a 4 cyclinder? J/K

Could be a bad power supply but that would be hard to check unless you have another one to replace it with to verify that.

In some computers, if the cpu fan is not working correctly it will trigger the bios to shut down the system immediately. Usually the cpu fan is plugged into a specific connector on the motherboard for the bios to detect if one is attached.

Iv no idea how to find out the make or moduel of the fan One day last year it beggan to make strange noises rattling When i reset the pc tower PC fan noisy is it stopped I looked online recently and found it could be multiple reasons so i opend the pc took a good look inside removed the fan cleaned very single area of the fan put it back in ensuring nothing was damaged When i turn the pc on and im looking at the fan it seems to be working perfectly but with the noise If i run my finger along the smooth centre to slow it it makes no noise If i slow it down with the three speed button thing that hangs from the fan then it still makes a noise The fan has lie a suspension on it and when i press PC tower fan is noisy it in theres no noise when i let it go the noise rattles again I personally think that inside the fan right where the motor is spinning theres is a problem of dust or something but i can t be sertain I want my fan to make no noise but be on full speed as befour since im a heavy gamer and i work with music too What should i do If i want to buy a new fan how do i choose one that will fit into it s place My pc uses a fan for the power supply a fan for the cpu and a fan on the side of the tower What do i do if i want to add more fans to my pc tower nbsp

A:PC tower fan is noisy

To find a fan or a similar size, just measure the old one in mm and get the same size locally or online. Case fans are generally 80MM, 92mm or 120mm.

Adding fans where they are no holders or screw holes would require something as simple as twist or zip ties or actually modifying the case to accept more fans.

I thought I had started a "help!" thread on this subject earlier today, but can't find it. Must have had a "senior moment" and not licked the submit button!
Here is my problem:
I see a tutorial on the HP site that explains how to add a PATA to my new machine (Adding or Replacing a Hard Drive HP Pavilion p6347c Desktop PC - HP technical support (Ireland - English)), but it remains a mystery to me how to match any of my connectors to the old drive. I see no parallel cable anywhere! And if I need to go and buy one, where the hell is the connection on the motherboard? The tutorial assumes I know all this, but if I did, I wouldn't need the tutorial.

Look for a blue connector next to the 24pin power connector. I can see it in the manual

When I bought my new cmputer, I didn't transfer my photoshop 7 stuff, now can I hook up my old tower to my new computer, download the PS 7 stuff on to a CD, then upload info onto the hard drive of my new computer? I'm new at this, so if this is a real stupid question, just say so.

A:question re tower

You can move any files PS created, but to use the program, it will have to be installed on the new pc.

Hi, for the past few days I have noticed a sound coming from my tower. It sounds like I put in a cd in the drive, but I haven't. Can anyone tell me why this is happening. Any comments would be great.

A:Making a new Tower

If you are not going to overclock, you shouldn't need Ballistix RAM, but Crucial is a good brand.

That's a good basic case.

Many here would try to steer you away from Seagate hard drives toward WD or Samsung, but you can obviously have good or bad luck with any of them.

A friend recently gave me an old tower of his with Windows XP installed. He did not give me a monitor. I was hoping I could use a VGA monitor cable and be able to plug that cable into my laptop and the tower but I am having difficulties. There is no place for me to "physically" boot up to that tower. Do I need to buy another/different cable to do something like this?

Don't even think about using the laptop screen as the desktop monitor unless you know exactly what you are doing, how the desktop was configured, etc. What you are proposing is having the XP desktop set up like a headless server, connecting the desktop and laptop via a crossover cable (or connecting to a network) then "running" the desktop using remote access from the laptop. Not a simple undertaking.

Buy a cheap used monitor and keyboard for the desktop - it's cheaper than replacing a fried laptop!

Since i installed windows 7 my tower started just randomly making that click/tick noise it makes just as your shutting it down or booting it up, the case doesnt restart, just get this weird click noise, in explicable really, just started happening since i updated from 7 and ive no idea if its my PSU or mobo showing signs of early wear or maybe if 7 has a fan controller or something i dont know about that keeps kickin in and out on one of my onboards, im still clueless as to why it came up, and i know this probably isnt the most informative post, but even to know if anyone else has it happen as well would be wonderful

A:Tower clicks

You are going to need to remove the side of the case and try to isolate the noiseA clicking sound is usually related to hard drive problems. Often called the click of death

I almost had my tower catch fire because the power supply fan stopped. The cputhermometer software wouldn?t shut it down because the cpu operates at only 40c but the mother board and the other wiring was melting. By the time the cpu would be effected by the ambient temperature it would be too late. I am trying to find a method of sensing an overheating problem which would be an independent stand alone system. Even though my system has fans everywhere and is dust free I still want it to be safe from setting its self on fire when I?m away.
Would someone please know of a solution.

I hooked up a used tower it worked great for 15 mins then comp. froze. tried to reboot and orange light came on moniter stayed black..tower is not making any beeps at all..Can some one help???

A:Tower Not Working

Do you happen to have any of the computer's specs you can post?
Problems like this could be a number of things, but my guess is either dead PSU or motherboard.

Let's start here: open up the case, and see if there are any led lights on the motherboard that are lit up, even when the power is off, as long as it is plugged in you should get something.

Hi for the past few days I have been hearing sounds coming from my tower. I just had it cleaned about 2 months ago, so I don't think it is could be dust built up on the fan. It sounds like it is trying to load a disk, but there isn't on in the slot where you put one. Any help would be great.

Thank you,

hello. My sister pulled the power cable from the back of the tower while her computer was on, now when i turn it on, the fan is abnormally loud. No image to the monitor what-so-ever. is there a fix to this? thank you =]

A:Odd tower issue

Sounds like some stuff got fried. It could be your Mobo. Isolating your hardware might be a good idea in figuring out what got fried. Do you have another graphics that you could swap for the one presently installed?
