Dell laptop runs extremely slow - need help boosting speed

Q: Dell laptop runs extremely slow - need help boosting speed

Hello,

I have a Dell Latitude D620 laptop that I bought in 2006 and it runs EXTREMELY slow, whether I am on the Internet or just doing basic tasks in Windows or MS Office. It has Windows XP, some basic software (like MS Office), and only a few files (because the hard drive crashed last year, so I only put a few files back on it, after installing the new hard drive). I know it's relatively old, but is there ANYTHING I can do to increase the speed of the computer, without buying additional memory? Any help I can get with increasing the speed will be greatly appreciated.

Also, I don't know if this is a different issue, but sometimes the laptop seems to get too hot (at the bottom) after being on for too long.

Thanks in advance.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

First, make sure your vents are clear of dust. Heat can cause all kinds of issues. Do you have a cooling pad?

Second, have you scanned for infections?

Hello all you tech savvy people out there, I was hoping I could get some information on free AV and malware protection. I currently use Malwarebytes for Anti malware, and I was wondering if I should run an AV also, and if so what should i use? Any help would be appreciated.
On further note, im also looking to boost my laptop performance, it seems to be running slow lately, and I was wondering if there was something I could do to fix this.
Thank you.

A:Help with AV and boosting my laptop speed.

Yes, run either MSE or Avast in addition to Malwarebytes.

Hi,

I've just removed a virus, that was due to my son playing games on my home/work laptop.  It is running very slowly upon startup & now has several helper programs installed on it.  One is "we-Care reminder" that has installed itself in my menu bar & I can't get rid of it.  It pops up every so often with information to purchase something.  Another issue happens when within a text in a web page is displayed and something will be highlighted and then when the mouse goes over it, a popup displays some type of "helpful information about the item/word".  I think I have another or several items that didn't get found when I ran malebytes malware program.

Download Security Check from here or here and save it to your Desktop. Double-click SecurityCheck.exe Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box. A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.NOTE 1. Please download Farbar Service Scanner (FSS) and run it on the computer with the issue.Make sure the following options are checked:

I have a dell vostro 1440 that runs extremely slow, I have done every thing on the stick post list for slow computers and it is not any better. This computer had problems right away when it was new DELL worked on it and it was a little better but still very slow, I never worried much about it because it is actually the computer my wife uses to do the books for our church so it gets used about once a month. The only thing  it is used for is QuickBooks and Excel spread sheets. It takes for ever to get everything up and running, once it's up and running it seems to run ok but still not like it should. Sometimes you get the not responding message, it eventually comes out of it but it can take a couple of minutes sometimes. It also takes a long time to shut down to.

Any help is greatly appreciated, Terry

My laptop keeps running extremely slow when I first boot it up.

I tried to get rid of programs, defragmented, used avg but it still runs slow when I start my computer again. I tried to delete some processes from Windows task manager but I am not sure which ones to process and I even installed the HijackThis software but I am not sure which files to check.

I was thinking about reinstalling windows XP, but I don't have the Dell disks to re-install. And if possible, I'd like to avoid that so I can use some programs that are hard to get and reinstall on my new machine.

Thanks,
Yonnie

A:Computer runs extremely slow, too slow to function HJT log included.

Hi and welcome to TSF.

My name is Iain and I will be helping you clean your system.

You may wish to Subscribe to this thread (Thread Tools > Subscribe to this thread) so that you are notified when you receive a reply.

Please read these instructions carefully and then print out or copy this page to Notepad in order to assist you when carrying out the fix. You should not have any open browsers or live internet connections when you are following the procedures below.

Note that the fix may take several posts. Please continue to respond to my instructions until I confirm that your logs are clean. Remember that although your symptoms may vanish, this does NOT mean that your system is clean.

If there is anything you don't understand, please ask BEFORE proceeding with the fixes.

Please ensure that you follow the instructions in the order I have them listed.

Reboot
Reboot your system in Safe Mode.Restart the computer. The computer begins processing a set of instructions known as BIOS.
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8 (dependent on your system this may be F5 or another key)
Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
Use the arrow key to highlight Safe Mode and press Enter.

Uninstall Programmes
Click > Start > Control Panel > Add / Remove Programs and uninstall the following programs (if present):

Anything from Viewpoint

Folder Deletions
Delete the following Folder indicated in BLUE if it still exists.

C:\Program Files\Viewpoint

Reboot
Reboot your system in Normal Mode.

Now we'll use ComboFix. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/comb...o-use-combofix

**Note: It is important that ComboFix is saved directly to your desktop**

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console. This will help us restore your system in the event of a serious crash. It's very simple to complete and will only take a few moments. A quick guide is detailed below.

Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
See here for a guide to disabling AV, Firewall and Anti-malware programmes.

Once you've downloaded the appropriate RC setup package for your system to the desktop, follow these instructions:
Drag the setup package onto ComboFix.exe and drop it.

Follow the prompts to start ComboFix and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Recovery Console.

At the next prompt, click 'Yes' to run the full ComboFix scan.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please post the log C:\ComboFix.txt along with a fresh HijackThis log for further review.

NOTE: Combofix prevents autorun of all CDs, floppies and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you - please let me know.

Please make sure that HJT is run in Normal Mode - not Safe Mode.

Hello, and welcome to TSF!

Let's start here...

Open an new HJT log and check all of the below to be fixed:

I have an HP running XP. I had a number of viruses, which have been removed (my thread is in the HJT forum). However, the system is still extrememly slow. Specifically, if I'm not on the internet it's ok. Once I try to open a browser, I watch task manager and the system and explorer process both go to 50% (plus or minus 10), so CPU is at 100% and basically locks up. The explorer I/O goes into the 100s of thousands. It takes over a minute for the browser to open up. If I close it, both system and explorer usage drops to almost 0. This renders my PC basically useless for internet use.

I have run a number of virus checkers/scanners, and all are clean (Spybot, AdAware, Anti-Spyware, haxfix, combofix, f-secure). Per my HJT post, that is clean.

Would a different browser help...e.g., firefox, or should I look at a total restore?

A:Cpu Is Extremely Slow, Runs 100%

Can you list your system specifications? The problem goes away when you aren't connected to the Internet? Did I understand that correctly?

My PC runs extremely slow lately. Also, it frequently crashes with no reason.
It takes ages to shut down & restart, or start any program.
I am suspecting some kind of virus or trojan or other pest.

I am running regularly: Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D, AVG virus checker, Spyware Doctor, Spyware Blaster, Registry Mechanic.
Defrag daily, Delete TEMP files and Temp Internet files.

I appreciate any help .. and many thanks in advance.

ESET scan also clean. PC user said she hit a download link for a TV episode file, and her anti-virus software went off, but I think something was installed at that time, probably rootkit.

I have attached the DDS log for this PC.

Running GMER right now, scan is taking hours, letting it run overnight.

GMER scan did not turn up anything.

Hi,

I just bought a new Dell laptop and it is running extremely slowly. It has a 2.8ghz dual core pentium processor and 8GB of ram, yet i cant listen to music and browse the web without the music skipping. Any large application I run, like anything from the adobe suite take like 5 minutes to open and then freezes constantly. When i open the task manager and look at my performance, i see that im only using around 10% of my processor speed and only about 25% of my RAM, so i am at a loss here. can anyone explain this?

thanks,
Madison Brown

Hi I've had this problem for a couple of days now and I've ran out of ideas I really hope one of you fine people can help me out Background Please note that this section probably isnt related at all Not too long ago just about a week after I formated my computer for the first Everything extremely runs slow and sometimes freezes time in about years my computer started running INCREDIBLY slow Just opening a folder could take over a minute Eventually I ran it in safe mode everything was completely fine I then checked Everything runs extremely slow and sometimes freezes all the processes running and as it turned out Avast antivirus was not running in safe mode but was running when i started windows normally Sure enough even though it didn't seem to take up a lot of recourses Avast alone had lagged my computer down to an unusable standard This was solved around a week ago It probably has nothing to do with this problem but I thought I'd include it anyway Now to my new problem My computer started running slowly from time to time occassionally freezing completely for about seconds and then going back to normal This all started about a week ago and has gotten gradually worse At first it would as I noted happen from time to time I for example uninstalled Origin which used had an update and normally uses a lot of recourses and everything worked fine I thought I had solved it but sure enough it came back eventually So far I've uninstalled more or less all programs that were installed close to the first symptoms and none of that has helped Right now the computer runs slow every single time i start it The start-up is as fast as always but as soon as I get on my desktop each click takes at least seconds to react Eventually it just either freezes for - seconds or it just goes in to normal-mode and everything works fine for a seemingly random time before it either gets slow or freezes up again This never stops even if I have the computer running for a long time I've tried defrag check disk chkdsk and Temp File Cleaner without success My computer also shuts down incredibly slow Usually I have to power it off after waiting for about - minutes After I ran TFC I've only had one restart though and that one was smoothe and flawless so I'm not sure if this part of the problem still persists That's all the information I have now If you need more info or have any suggestions please please reply Many thanks and best regards EDIT And I'm ofcourse not using Avast anymore I tried uninstalling my current antivirus and that didn't help this time unfortunally

A:HP Laptop runs extremely HOT

When did this symptom started to appear or happen?

How old is this laptop?
Does your laptop get just as hot while in safe mode? If you haven't try this please do try. Restart your computer and go into safe mode, and stay logged in safe mode for 30 minutes running simple task like word and so on.

To log into safe mode you will need advanced boot options menu
Advanced Boot Options

My initial guess after reading what you describe seems to be that it could possibly be heating issue inside(fans being slowed down due to dust), a lot of dust and so on. Another possibility could be a virus, also would you please update your system specs. It would help, System Info - See Your System Specs

My wife's computer running on VISTA is running extremely slow. It is brutally slow logging on (15-20 minutes) and can take a long time toload programs, etc. I loaded Autoruns and there are a lot or things that load at startup but I am fearful to make changes without advice from an "expert" and it seems there is more to it as slow as it runs.

I realize this is a very broad "problem" and would appreciate some ideas on ways to determine and fix potenital issues.

Thanks for any help.

I have to reboot my computer all the time. During startup I get lots of boxes that appear referencing tray applications and other things that are not found or and cannot run properly.

Startup is very slow and after running the computer for just a short time it begins to freeze and slow down more and more until it just needs to be rebooted.

Because of my work schedule it may take me a little bit to reply once you get to this. I will monitor it from my phone but don't always have internet service as I have Sprint and they are HORRIBLE!!!! Anyway I hope you can help me.

Thank you so much.

I just bought a new Pavillion laptop from Costco and it runs incredibly slow.  Bootup takes about 10 minutes.  Restarting sometimes doesn't happen at all -- it just stays in the restart loop or can take 15 minutes.  Paid a lot of money for this computer, and am disappointed it is not working.  Will try to exchange it for another brand unless there is a way that I can fix this.  It seems to be defective. Anyone else have these problems?  It has a lot of new hardware so I cannot imagine there should be anything wreong with it unless defecive.

A:Brand new HP 15-r007tx runs extremely slow

Hey @saurabhlprocks , Welcome to the HP Forums! I understand you're having issues with performance on your HP 15 notebook. High disk usage is often the result of the Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS). Try disabling the service by following these steps:Press Windows Key + R.Type services.msc and click OK.Search for Background Intelligent Transfer Service.Right click it and select Properties.Stop the service with the Stop button.Change the startup type drop down menu to Disabled to prevent it from running after reboot.Test.I would also suggest going through this guide for thorough and easy to follow steps on optimizing your notebooks performance without adding memory (RAM): Improving System Performance without Adding Memory (Windows 8). Also, your notebook is a FreeDOS system, make sure that all of the drivers are up to date for your hardware after installing Windows 8. You can use the HP Support Assistant (HPSA) for this or update them manually using your products support page available here: HP 15-r007tx Notebook PC Drivers. If you don't have the HPSA installed you can download it here: HP Support Assistant. Start the download by selecting Notebooks, laptops, netbooks on the right side of the page. You can find a guide on using the HPSA here: Using HP Support Assistant (Windows 8). Let me know if this information helps or if you have any other questions.

I have an older compaq laptop running win XP sp3. It was running fine a couple of days ago then suddenly began running extremely slow (takes approx 20 minutes to boot and another 10 minutes to load firefox. Additionally, when I run Task manager it shows that there are several items of malware loaded that I am slowly getting rid of. All of the memory is reported as present but I have never actually seem the commit charge exceed a little less than 50% of the total available mem.

I have a suspiscion that a mem module is fried or that a virus is loading itself into memory on boot and then hiding itself from the task manager so I cant see it...can anyone tell me what inspection steps I need to go through to inspect the Memmodule and or MB?

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (v1.39) and save it to your desktop.alternate download link 1alternate download link 2MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.Make sure you are connected to the Internet.Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application. When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings. When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:Update Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareLaunch Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareThen click Finish.MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the definition updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install. On the Scanner tab:Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected. Then click on the Scan button. If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button. My computer seems to get very very laggy while playing games, and after it gets laggy it starts making noise that sounds like a fan going from off to on, and from there my monitor would go to sleep and my computer would not shutdown but would just be really quite. So I dont know what the issue is but I think it has to be my computer making my screen go to sleep maybe? Because I do get very laggy before this process takes place. I'm about to go to the stores to replace my graphics card maybe? But I would like some help so I can figure out what the problem is. If I have to reboot this computer to literally 0 Im down as long as it'll fix the problem and I can get help downloading the important programs. Please and thank you =)

A:Solved: Windows explorer runs extremely slow or freezes

You have an infected computer my friend. http://free.avg.com/us-en/homepage

Install that(hopefully you're able to) and if successful, update definitions if it doesn't do it automatically and do a scan on it.

More than likely it sounds like your reg files are screwed, so may I suggest a backup of files and drivers; reformat.

OR

If you have a retail copy of the current version of windows you are using, go ahead and boot off the disc and get to the recovery console.

Once in command prompt, do a fixboot, then chkdsk /r function.

PS

Definitely get AVG, it's the best freeware anti virus software out there known to man of this current moment.

AND

Definitely do a scan with it!

Hope this helps!

A:[SOLVED] Windows XP system runs extremely slow - HDD Problem?

Windows acting slow can be anything from hard drive going bad to a virus or some other program hoarding system resources

Can you check the system resource utilization under task manager and see which process if any is going out of control

Clean boot the machine to kill all programs on start ups even the AV

boot the machine into Safe mode to see the performance

Run Malwarebytes and Combo Fix on the system and post the logs here

Ever since I upgraded to Windows my download speed has been drastically slow The difference is with most people is that my connectivity is fine the bars are all highlighted in the icon I can easily jump from one page to another w o any connection issues It's just when I download files - no matter how small they might be And it's not just the files - but in my Programs in my computer like my Audio engineering programs I use or loading up as simple as MP files All that takes soooooo much longer to load than before when I had It's extremely annoying and I slow Extremely speed. download thought it'd be the complete opposite since I'm upgrading NOT downgrading I'm running on a Wireless router my friend uses her computer downstairs with her own Router that I'm latched onto Is there anyway I can fix this by updating the driver for the connection speed or something It's really bad for me when I'm working in my engineering programs as it Extremely slow download speed. takes too long to load up my music as well as the download times to download simple files that don't even have that much KB or MB on them Much appreciated if anyone could help me out

A:Extremely slow download speed.

To possibly isolate the source of problem, can your try connecting via Ethernet? Also, you might find it advantageous to try connecting directly to modem via Ethernet. An updated driver for the router might solve the problem. And, so might updating the router's firmware.

So a couple months ago i started a download for a game on steam but when i was checking it it would download at kb for like secs and say busy writing to disk for a whole minute i have DL and UP and steam usually downloads at a steady Mbps I checked my main HDD write speed and it was around Mb then i checked my other HDD and the write speed was at a really slow Kb I used a rd party program to check its status crystaldiskmark or info and both HDD's were fine so i used S M Speed Extremely Write HDD Slow A R T from CMD and it also said both HDD's were just fine so i really dont know whats HDD Write Speed Extremely Slow going on I am getting a new TB real soon and by that im doing a whole new build and i wouls like HDD Write Speed Extremely Slow to turn my current PC into a home PC for my family but thats not gonna work out to well with a failing HDD that isnt being detected or something So does anyone know some tricks i could try to fix this or is it done for Oh and it couldnt have been heat or anything since my HDD's are literally always at HDD Write Speed Extremely Slow body temperature level C - C The HDD is also about years old so it could just be dying but i want to know why its problems arent being detected by SMART or any programs

A:HDD Write Speed Extremely Slow

Download the disk utility from the hard drive manufacturer's web site.

It probably has a couple of tests. Run the quick one. If it passes that, run the longer one.

SMART isn't entirely reliable. Drives can go bad at any time with no warning.

But you may have healthy drives that are being affected by something else---malware for instance.

I finally got my WLAN set up and I'm getting ridiculously slow speed according to LAN Speed Test. When I say ridiculously slow I mean like 10 Mbps slow.

The router and all of the wireless cards are 802.11n. I have an excellent signal on both computers. I've tried two different routers and it made no difference.

My desktop is running Windows 7 Home Premium and my laptop is running Mac OS X 10.6.

Any help would be appreciated.

How much download speed does your ISP claim?

The speed used to be optimal, but in the past weeks it increased up to 4 minutes which is insane.
I disabled most of non microsoft services and startup programs but it does not decrease at all. If you need any further logs/info feel free to ask.

Thank you

A:Extremely slow boot speed

Did you use msconfig or simply Task manager ?
I wouldn't guess unchecking ms services would be a good thing to do ?
Post a couple of screen shots.

Hi,

I am on Win 7 32 bit. I have a transcend 8 GB , 2.0 Usb flash drive.

I have formatted the flash drive to ntsc using windoes format tool.

the problem is the speed of moving or copying files to and from the drive is only at 1.5MB/s to 2.5MB/s.

I read articles on the net, and changed the policy to better performance and formatted to ntsc. still no change.

how do i fix it?

Hello all.

Having a bit of a quandry. I have one laptop, a Toshiba Satellite L500-2H, that seems to get ridiculously slow wireless speeds sometimes. Like, slow to the point of not even being able to load webpages. Or taking way too long to do so. Either it cripples along or can't load outright. I run the silly little Windows 7 diagnostic and it says my broadband modem is experiencing connectivity issues. I know this isn't the case because the 6 other computers in my house have no problem connecting, via ethernet or wireless. And sometimes the Toshiba will do exactly what it's supposed to and pull 20 megabits/s on speedtest.net, which is what the others do. The wireless adapter is a Realtek 8191, if that helps.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

A:Extremely Slow Internet Speed

There are two things i would recommend. First would be to run Disk Cleanup. You will find that in System Tools. This will remove old coolies, internet temp files and your internet history. Second set your internet History to 0 or 1 day, instead of the default 20 days. You will find that under Internet Options in IE. This will force IE to retrieve a new page each time instead of trying to access a cache page in you temp files. One more thing is I would clear your Rcache. Go to Start> Run> cmd> ipconfig /flushdns

Start by reading this:Slow Computer?, Use this troubleshooting checklistDo you have a desktop computer? If so, when was the last time the innards were cleaned?http://www.wikihow.com/Clean-the-Inside-of-a-ComputerEdit to add: there are other reasons why a computer will run slow.A hardware issue is one. Another one a lot of people don't think about is their firewall and antivirus may not play nice with a system. If you have a security suite, it could possibly be that causing the problem.

A:Extremely Slow Network Speed

Lets take a peek at your network environment:

First:

Power Cycle everything . . Turn off the Modem, router and all pc's . . turn on the Modem and wait a few minutes for the lights to stabilize . . then turn on the router, then one pc at a time. See if you connect to the internet.

Then:

Remove all the stored wireless network profiles and search for the network again.

How to Remove Stored Wireless Network Profiles for XP, Vista, and Windows 7

Then: check your browser's settings, remove any proxy settings if found here's how.

Then:

with the pc connected to the router, Click on Start . . Run . . type CMD

At the > prompt type type the following command: IPCONFIG /ALL and press enter.

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter. Come back here and Paste the results in a message.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB drive, or a CD-R disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

then please Download and run this Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector, click the Networks link on the upper left and paste a screen shot of that screen here. Note that this application requires NET Framework to run. If you get an error about a missing function, download and install NET Framework.

To post a screen shot of the active window, hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file. To upload it to the forum, open the full reply window and use the Manage Attachments button to upload it here.

Might I ask what time of day you did that test? In My Opinion, the Internet is like the Interstate. You can't go fast at rush hour.
You should try it at different times of day to see if it changes.
You could even try another test site http://www.internetfrog.com/mypc/speedtest/

A:Extremely slow Internet Speed and more issues

Also, I recently installed Malwarebytes Anti Malware, ran a scan and it found one thing and removed it. Below is the log for it. I only recently installed that because my computer starting running really slow, but after I did intall this, it got even worse. I installed it from Cnet. Also, I don't know if this will help or not, but the other day I could not get on the internet at all, I called Verizon tech support, they walked me through troubleshooting and had me enter a long password I had never known about to open up the settings in the VZ Access Manager, then he had me change some of my settings and also told me someone had changed them and that's why I could not access the internet, I explained to him that was impossible since no one uses this but myself and hubby and he knows less about computers than me, plus in order to change those settings, someone would have had to know that Verizon password, so how could that have even happened?

Thanks in advance to anyone that can help me.

Hey Guys I was wondering if anyone could help me with a problem I've been having I have Windows XP completely up to date and an Agere Systems AC' modem I have done virus malware and spyware scans which all came back clean My problem is that starting about three days ago my Slow Speed. at Extremely Modem Connecting modem would only connect at about Kbps sometimes slower rarely any faster Before this it would connect at Kbps about of the time with no problems and remain connected for the standard hours The new connection speed makes it nearly impossible to browse the Internet It's just too slow for pages to load and I constantly have to reload pages that just stall out If I had the money I'd definitely purchase Modem Connecting at Extremely Slow Speed. high-speed Internet but I don't have the funds right now I brought up the diagnostic tools for the modem and it said that the modem was working properly I tried to update the driver and got the message that said it was up-to-date When I ran a troubleshoot on it it said quot Is your COM port turned off The troubleshooter detected that a COM port may be disabled This may be the cause of the problem Follow the steps below To enable a COM port Open Device Manager in Control Panel Double-click Ports COM amp LPT to expand the list of ports Right-click the port the modem is using and then click Enable If Enable is not listed the COM port is enabled quot The modem is listed as being COM port but when I follow the steps that are listed no COM ports appear on the list only a printer I have no problem connecting to the Internet It connects every time just at the reduced speed It does seem to take longer to connect though When I called my ISP they said everything was working fine on their end and that if I could connect to the Internet than it likely wasn't my computer So the next logical conclusion is it's the phone line right The problem with that though is I've tried connecting from other places in my home with the same results maybe a little faster in the s Kbps I also have two separate lines and have tried them both with the same results At one point yesterday I connected several times in a row at my normal Kbps speed and thought maybe everything had returned to normal so I left it connected but when I came back the download speed had reduced to a crawl My brother who lives with me says that his connection is fine no change in his speed - which must mean it is my computer right The only thing different I've done during that time frame is download a new version of my virus software I use AVG and had to download version Well it didn't download an actual exe file to my HD It used something like a download manager like what Firefox uses to update Anyway everything appeared to be working fine maybe it slowed my browser down a little because of the quot Link Scanner quot it uses but I was still connecting at Kbps with no problem Well after I started losing connection speed I jumped the gun and uninstalled AVG thinking that might be the problem it doesn't appear that it was Now I have no virus protection because my Internet speed is too slow to re-download it and the old exe file for version is about a year out of date and won't run correctly completely because I can't update it with speed I have I'm at loss right now I have no idea what's wrong and so have no clue how to address it Could my modem just be fading Should I buy a new one Any help you guys could give would be greatly appreciated If you have any questions please ask them It might take me a while to respond because of my speed issue though Thanks a lot in advance I apologize if this issue has already been addressed I wasn't able to really do an effective search with the connection I have

Hi,

I have 32 bit Windows 7 enterprise edition installed on DELL Inspiron 1525 with 4 GB RAM.
I am facing the issue of extremely slow copying speeds. The copying speed hovers around 4-5 Kbps.

Other XP machines are able to do this real fast. I updated from Vista, believing this problem would've been solved in Windows 7... but this is a big disappointment... for all the hype created.

Is there a solution to this...

Thanks in advance for any help that can be provided.

A:Extremely slow copying speed over the network

Please try to answer as many as these as you can.
Location on network (LAN, other LAN, Internet)
What type of connection between the machines? (both wifi, one wifi other 100mbit)
What type of machine are you copying to? (NAS, Mac, Windows, Linux)
What protocal are you using? (FTP, Samba/Windows share)
By copying do you mean from two network locations? or from your machine to network? or from network to your machine?
how is internet download speeds?

i think this has something to do with the new version of SMB but im not sure... that might of been fixed allready

Hello Recently I ve been having problems with my internet connection It has become very slow - around - KB s it used to be - KB s depending on the time of day This started around a week ago when it got very hot in the UK don t know if that has anything to do with it Some background information - my ISP is BT and I m meant to get mb speed slow already but can t be helped due to location out of a possible mb I m using the BT Homehub that the subscription came with which is telling me the broadband is fine However when I plug my older modem router in some Netgear model from last year the internet light glows orange indicating there is something wrong with the connection My connection is a wired connection but I use DLAN power socket to ethernet connecters throughout the house These aren t the cause however as I ve tried my Xbox - which is Extremely Slow Download Speed Browsing are and plugged straight into the modem - and the problem still persists I phoned up BT but we all know how hopeless their support is I have tried plugging it into the main ADSL line which didn t help and even unscrewed the plate and put it into the quot main socket quot inside as the support guy described it which also didn t help They ran a test and Download and Browsing Speed are Extremely Slow said I was getting a KB s download speed Download and Browsing Speed are Extremely Slow - which they acknowledged was extremely slow They also told me there was no problem on their end but this is rather unclear and the person hung up on me during our conversation so I couldn t reach him again I really don t know what to do I d rather save calling them again for a last resort it gets very tedious after a while I m thinking there may be some internal wiring problems but they said there was nothing wrong from their end Anyway thanks in advance and thanks for reading Download and Browsing Speed are Extremely Slow this huge wall of text nbsp

A:Download and Browsing Speed are Extremely Slow

This is almost surely their issue from your description.

Let's do a test. Boot in Safe Mode with Networking, and connect with a wired connection directly to the modem and run the following test.
Register at DSLReports and run their Line Quality Tests. It's best to run this test with a direct wired connection to eliminate any wireless issues from the results. It's useful many times to run this test several times, and we'd like to see each of the results. Post the results link from the top of the test display page for each test run here.

The link to post is near the top of the page and looks like:

If you wish to post this result to a forum, please copy/paste this URL
http://www.dslreports.com/linequality/nil/2357195 <- sample only, yours will obviously be different!
and your IP will be disguised.

Copy/paste that link here.

Note: You will have to enable PING (ICMP) request response either in your router (if you have one), or in your computer's firewall for direct modem connections. This is very important to get the most important part of the test to run.
DSLReports

Here's also the Line Quality Tests FAQ to help you understand the results. This will answer some questions about the line quality display.

A little while ago I put a new 1TB hard drive in my Dell Inspiron N5050 to replace the old 500GB one. I used the Windows backup program on the computer and the information on the Windows website. I transferred the system image to a backup hard drive, then installed it onto the new hard drive. I've tried a disc cleanup, defragmenting the hard drive, and I've run all the diagnostics that Windows has and still this thing is SLOW!
I'm running Windows 7 64 bit, my computer has an Intel Core I3 processor. I still have the old hard drive with everything still on it and I still have the system image on the backup hard drive. Please if anyone can help, I would GREATLY appreciate it, this thing is driving me nuts (My OLD Inspiron 1420 with a Core2 Duo processor runs circles around my N5050!)

when bandwidth tested through www.speedtest.net shows normal download speeds:5.1mbps however actual download speeds are around 12-100kbps, other computers on this network are downloading properly. Troubleshooting steps I have already taken: Tried different router, tried different cables, changed NIC card, disabled QoS packet scheduler, moved computer to different location entirely (friends internet tested at 16mbps on speedtest.net, download speeds were around 600kbps, all other computers in the house were downloading at acceptable speeds), updated drivers

A:Extremely Slow Interent/DL speed LAGS/FREEZES please help

In the computer industry, anything sold as an "optimiser" is almost guaranteed to be a scam. My suggestion would be to try to revert your configuration to default as much as possible - uninstall all "optimisers" and utilities promising to enhance your browsing or download speeds.

Also test and see what happens when you boot to [safe mode + net]. If that leads to a substantial increase in performance (back to normal), you could use the "selective startup" option in the MSCONFIG utility to try to find the culprit which slows things down in normal mode.

hi all, having a major issue with my SSD, all of a sudden it has terrible write speeds of only 1.5mb/s - I noticed a real slow down on PC, narrowed it down to SSD. Tested with various things, although read speed is ok, the write speed is atrocious. Tried it on both SATA 2 and 3 controllers and is the same, I have tried to delete it and clean using diskpart, recovery from image is taking 15 hours to write 139gb image in acronis, sure it should only take a couple of hours. Any help or advice appreciated please.

Hello everybody
I have a question
Actually I need a program that I do not know is there any program like this or not but I heard there is something like this for Linux but I am not sure about Windows.
I am using the internet in my university and university limited download speed for every system up to 100 KB/S. I heard there is a program which can introduce my system to the router as 10 or more systems so I can download with 10x100 KB/S
I will appreciate if you let me know is there any program to do that.

We cant help you with something to bypass the University's network policy. I suggest you tailor your needs to theirs, or ask them if it can be modified.

I have been using a USB 2.0 Seagate 250GB external hard drive for a number of years and it's been working fine.

My laptop has USB 3.0 ports.

The last couple of weeks it's got really slow (less than a MBs) when transferring a video file.

I checked the hard drive for errors - none were found.
USB drivers are up to date Driver Booster 3 says.
Is there some settings I could try to speed things up?

As far as I know I've not changed anything so I don't know why it's suddenly got so slow.

A:Extremely slow transfer speed to external hard drive

If you right click the drive in Device Manager and look through the Properties you may see an option to either treat the drive as removable or permanent. Removable supposedly you can unplug without ejecting. But it is slow. Permanent supposedly enables write caching. Likely it was set to permanent before.

If nothing seems apropos you can try the old trick of deleting the drivers and rebooting. Plug and play will install the same drivers that were there but will do it "right" somehow. I have seen a lot of problems disappear just by doing this on a particular device. That is why support does it. Anecdotal success rate seems to me around 50%.

Hello
My desktop's internet speed is extremely slow, worse than dial-up, downloading a game off steam I get around 6/kbs whereas on a different computer using the same connection I could download up to 700/kbs.

I've tried using an ethernet cable and a wireless router with no different results.
The computer was shipped in the mail but I took it to a geek squad and he reconnected all the loose ends so it could still be a problem but im at a loss.

I did a fresh install of vista so I doubt my cookies could be bogging it down already.
I also don't have McAffe so its not that.

Any help is greatly appreciated.
Cheers.

Hi Everyone.

I have recently had to format my hard drive and re-install windows. I have also had to replace the motherboard, CPU and power supply. I borrowed a 1.5 TB Freecom firewire external hard drive from a friend to back-up important data before the format, but the transfer speed is uselessly slow now that I am attempting to put the data back on the drive.

I have tried:

- updating the drivers for the firewire card
- switching to 1394 OHCI Compliant Host Controller (legacy) in the device manager
- Optimizing the drive for 'better performance' as opposed to 'speedy removal' in the drive's properties.

As things stand at the moment, I am getting about 400 kb/ps transfer speed from the external to my on-board drive. As you can imagine, this is virtually useless to me, considering I have hundreds of gigabytes worth of data to transfer.

Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

A:Extremely slow transfer speed from external hard drive

The best option if the external HD offers an eSata port would be to plug the drive in by either an eSata port provided with the case you or by an addon eSata card. Even when backing things up on a drive in a usb enclosure like seeing a full system image made the data transfer rate slows to a crawl.

One example for that was an image made from a 7 laptop to the drive in the external enclosure taking some 3hrs. to finish from a 120gb drive with hardly anything on it and comparing that to an image totally 497gb made to another internal drive on the desktop here only taking about 35min.!

Unfortunately the only other option would be removing the drive from the self contained external casing it came in to install internally like I did with one WD Essentials 500gb model during the beta and RC testing of 7 simply to add in an extra drive. Otherwise you have to suffer with what the firewire bus will allow.

Of course if it did have an eSata port you could also open the side cover on the case while powered down long enough to plug the drive into a port on the board long enough to see everything copied over which would be faster but just a little awkward. Then you would be using the onboard sata controllers.

Overclocking is never a "safe" activity. To overclock, one must be willing to accept the hazards of such including shorter life and occasional burnout of the processor if you exceed the max limits it was manufactured to operate under. Some of the "hobbyist" or "game" priority motherboards already have some degree of overclocking processes built in so they do so automatically.I would research thoroughly and become expert before I traveled that path. I have a Dell XPS 8700 running WIN 7 professional with Service Pack 1.

About two weeks ago I started having problems with more than one window open or running more than one program at a time. It was sporadic. This morning it is all the time.

Very slow accessing Internet Explorer or Chrome. Hangs trying to move from site to site. Can't access e-mail while accessing internet.

I run Panda antivirus and have it scanning every day. I use Malware Bytes once a week. Today I used online Trend Micro and nothing showed up. However I wonder if I picked up a virus or malware.

Any ideas? I really need my computer today!

Thanks for any help!

Sue

Hello hope someone can help me, my brother is currently serving abroad with the military and is fortunate enough to be on a base that has wifi access. Trouble is there is that many people using it he is only able to load msn home page during his off time.

He always has full signal strenghth and has and acer aspire (not sure of the model at the minute) with a built in wifi card. His only problem is it is so slow and will time out rather than open anything other than the home page.

Thank you in advance for any help offered.

A:Help with boosting internet speed via a wifi hotspot

I doubt he can increase it If there is limited bandwidth and soo many people are using it, then it will likely go slow
Suggest to him he should go on when theres not many people browsing etc., Night?

Hello the computer I am concerned with is running Windows with IE Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware I am currently in Safe Mode with Networking without issue The owner of the computer says that something happened earlier today while he was online that sounds like some false antivirus popup but he s unsure Here are the symptoms in normal mode Every application from moving through them to opening and closing them runs exceptionally slow - one to three minutes to open at least a minute to open internet pages I noticed that when in IE as the pages are loading the IE page disappears and reappears I am not very familiar with Windows so I don t know if it is related The computer seems to be getting slower as the day goes on CPU usage is very high So far I have disabled many startup items that were unnecessary I ran CCleaner and cleaned up MBAM was run in both normal and safe mode full scans and found nothing This is also posted in Viruses and Malware but I m unsure where it should live If you can help thanks I have to work on the Win computer from LogMeIn and may have to get around in safe mode there

A:Win7 runs extremely slow in normal mode, but nicely in safe mode

A:Dell Dimension 3000 Runs SLOW !!!

In most cases, issues dealing with slow computers can be attributed to viruses/malware. Sometimes loading new software (or software updates) can slow down a computer because of the size of the program relative to your computer's hardware specs, but 95% of the problems I've ever run across as far as slow computers are concerned (especially abrupt slowness) are due to viruses/malware. So my question to you is have you run a virus/malware scan lately? I'd start there especially if you haven't loaded any new software recently.

I was given a Dell Inspiron 8200 laptop. System information says its Windows XP Service Pack 3, Intel Mobile CPU 1.6 GHz and 256 MB of RAM. This system is slow. It takes 15 minutes or so to boot up but even after it does boot up if you click on a program it might take 5 or 10 minutes for the program to open. Occasionally the most pointer disappears and then comes back. Also, when you try to close programs it takes just as long to close them as it does to open them. Can anyone help to get this running again. Thanks for the help.

My brand new laptop is really disappointing me. It runs so very slowly that it's really taking the joy out of it.
I have 8GB RAM, Windows 10.
It also turns off suddenly when in use.
Any thoughts on a resolution?
