I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Is there any way to protect a Folder on a external harddrive

Most externals are formatted as FAT32, so the answer is basically NO.
You can get a PGP tool to protect files and folders.

If you ONLY attach to Windows systems, you might consider

converting the external to NTFS
then changing the NTFS permissions on the folder of concern to allow only your login

I have an external harddrive that of which I keep all my files on.
It contains a huge network of folders, which help organize my files.
Thing is, I want all these folders to be sized and arranged just how I want them to be.
But, with windows saving these settings to the registry, is there a way for me
to export the customized folder view settings for this harddrive, to use if my system
somehow manages to reset these settings, or use on other PC's?
Be it a registry file or executable/batch file, anything that will solve this problem.

Is it possible to password protect a Hard drive entirely, independent of OS.

I just came across an ebay auction (3 Seagate disks) and according to the seller 2 of the drives are password protected and he removed password protection for one.

I know that there are applications using which you could password protect a disk.

A:Password Protect Harddrive?

Yes. Newer hard drives can be password protected so that you cant use them without the password. I saw a post on another forum where you could buy a service to unlock a passworded hard drive at a cost of about $50.00 per drive and the post said it doesnt work on all units. For that price I would buy a new hard drive.

My desktop computer's motherboard was fried in a tragic lightning accident, but the hard drive is intact. I would like to purchase an enclosure for the hard drive and use it as an external hard drive. I'm posting here because I'm worried about compatibility.

Here are the hard drive details:
Seagate, S/N 90Z7588X
ST 380215A
P/N 9CY011-305
Firmware 3.AAD
Date code 08257
Barracude 7200.10
80 Gbytes

Will that work with any of these enclosures:

Thank you in advance for any help!

A:Need to password protect external HDD

See if File Secure Free would help. You can password protect external hard drives or USB flash drives by plugging it in, choosing the drive and clicking a "lock" button to enter a password which then locks the drive. To unlock the drive, you'd again select it, enter the password, and then click the "unlock" button.

I've read a few online articles on how to protect the contents of a folder. Bitlocker, 3rd party software and some cmd magic can also be used, but what is really the best/safest AND most user-friendly(the user being the administrator of that folder) way to protect/secure a folder? Also, that folder must be able to be uploaded to a cloud service such as google drive and downloaded on another computer and still be accessible by myself on the other computer...

The simplist way is to zip the folder using something like 7ZIP, and password protect it. Other solutions (e.g. portable TrueCrypt) are generally more complex.

I have 6 external HDDs which I use for my back ups, problem is, I live in a very dusty area in a semi-basement, so loads of dust comes into the room daily. 2 of these drives are Western Digital Elements, which have a very big open area to vent heat, but dust could easily get in from there. I was thinking of buying anti-static bubble wrap (RED Small Bubble Wrap 300mm 500mm 750mm ANTI STATIC PROTECTION FREE DELIVERY | eBay) to cover the drives when not in use. Any opinions?

On the same note, can I cover my gaming rig when not in use with this same bubble wrap? It has vents on the top of the case, so dust could easily get in.

A:Password Protect Folder USB

Hey, unfortunately because of the nature of USB storage (and the way in which they can be read by many OSes [which you wouldn't be able to script for]) The only secure way to password protect a USB stick is by encrypting the files within or using an encrypted file system.

I've heard good things about TrueCrypt and the time it takes to encrypt/decrypt. It depends entirely on how badly you need to make the files inaccessible.

how to protect "WINDOWS" folder in xp? so that the files inside it cannot be deleted. because it happens to me that almost all of the files inside the WINDOWS folder are deleted and as a result the OS cannot be booted.

If you are thinking why i know that almost all of the files inside the WINDOWS folder are being deleted, well that is because i've make the harddisk (the one that has a problem) as a slave and found out that only 3 folders and 5 or 6 files are left inside the WINDOWS folder.

A:How To Protect "windows" Folder In Xp?

You will have to reinstall XP to get the computer working again
After that create a non-administrative ("Limited User") account and use that for day to day work so that you can't delete items within the Windows folder.

Be careful when installing programs or deleting files, and make sure you backup important data!

I'm currently in need of a tool or piece of software that will password, or even easier, lock a folder.
At the moment, Domain Admins within our network are able to view pretty much all of the C drive. I am a DA myself.

I'd preferably like to be able to gain access just by opening it (thus authenticating with my account). At the least, i will have to manually enter a password each time.

Can anybody recommend a tool or software that is safe? Opensource is always good...

Yes, use the EFS:

I don't know how it is in the UK, but medical records in the US are subject to very strict Federal regulations about privacy, aka HIPAA.
It's not something I would want to freelance with, especially with untested and possibly non-compliant 3rd-party software.
There is little/no slack cut for violations and the penalties are substantial.

I would assume there is something similar in the UK?

Unless you are talking about your own personal medical records on your own personal, home computer (and even then), I would research the rules very thoroughly before proceeding.

I think you can do that with such softwares, TrueCrypt, MyWinlocker...FolderLocker, DirLock...

But you can aswell set to private all the folder in C:\Users\your Name\

I don't believe that MS-Word includes any support for applying password protection to a folder. It will only control password protection for individual Word files.

Windows XP Professional on an NTFS formatted hard drive allows you to encrypt a folder so that its contents can only be opened by the user that encrypted it. Any other user of the computer can look inside the folder but is blocked from opening or copying any files in the folder.

Was the program a trial version?

Also, lets have a look at a HT log, go to , and download 'Hijack This!'.
Doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that, save the log somewhere, and please copy & paste its contents to the forum.

It will possibly show other issues deserving our attention, but most of what it lists will be harmless or even required, so do NOT fix anything yet.

Someone here will be happy to help you analyze the results.

I tried using WinZip, a friend said that it's possible to password protect a ZIP file but I am unable to do so. I don't like WinRar and 7Zip much for daily use, so I would like to have an alternative to password protect my folders/files.

I have heard and read about many 3rd party softwares, but all of them create a separate folder in which I have transfer the files, similar to a real life locker. But the kind of software I need is the one which has the ability to right click a folder/file and set a password, and whenever someone clicks on it, the password is asked.

I DO NOT want the folder/file to be invisible, I want it to be visible but protected by a password.

Any suggestions on a built-in or a 3rd party software to do so?
I'm on Windows 7 Home Premium (32 bit).

A:How do I password protect a folder/file?

I don't think it is possible to password protect a single file/folder. You' have to either use one of the file compressors or create a virtual partition to save your files to that need protection. TrueCrypt and PGP come to mind. with compression, 7zip I think is more secure.

Other option is to place a password on your startup so one is needed to start the PC.

We have a shared network that requires a password to enter, however i want to place a folder on the network that has a password.
All users are able to access on the folders on the network as soon as they login to it but I want to create a secure folder that certain users can access.
I tried creating a batch file to lock the folder, this works on my own computer but not in the network itself, it says access denied and closes before allowing me to type the password to unlock or lock the folder.
Has anyone any ideas on doing this without the use of third party software or creating a new user because i still want certain users to have access to it

A:Password Protect Folder on Network

Hi and Welcome to SevenForums.

Generally the way you would do this is using NTFS permissions rather than setting a password on the folder (setting a password isn't possible within windows without 3rd party tools / scripts as far as i am aware)

Where is this network?
If it is at work i recommend you ask your IT department to do this but below is a guide that may help if needed.

If you are not familiar with NTFS permissions then this may be a lot to take in but check this guide out Permissions - Allow or Deny Users and Groups

I am trying to password a folder on two of my computers. Is there anyway to do it on Win 98 and Win XP.

I am willing to download any freeware or maybe buy something if anyone has any ideas.

A:Can you password protect a folder on WinXP?

Yes there are two ways that I know. One is to use winzip to zip the containing folder and assign a password.

The second way Is a bit more geeky. In xphome you restart and boot in safe mode. You log in as administrator. Then you find the containing folder and right click it. There are new tabs, one of them is the security tab. Here you can deny acces to certain accounts.

My computer does not use a log in password. It boots right to the desktop. However, I would like to password protect one single folder without having to have a password on the whole computer. Can this be done?

It's my understanding that if one sets a password on a file or folder, then one is required to log in to that computer itself.

One of my friends at work was asking if it was possible to put a password on one of the folder's on his harddrive. I have told him it is possible (as I did it years ago, but can't remember how).

I searched Google, but all I get are sites where they want to charge you for software to do this (which i'm not against paying for software, but if it can be done without spending the money then great).

Does anyone know of a way of doing this?

Any help would be greatly appreciated..

A:How do you Password Protect a folder (Windows XP)

Well you can Zip the Folder and put a password on it but other than that I don't believe Windows ever had anything native that did it, if that is what you are referrring to. Microsoft did come out with a utility called Private Folders but then quickly yanked it from their website because Network Administrators accross america banded together and forced their hand to remove it.

Now there are programs that can encrypt the folder with a password. I usually use Axcrypt to do this but there is an easier utility out there to use and it is free. I just can't remember the name of it. It was something like one click encrypt or single click encrypt. My Google foo isn't working right now.

I don't understand why Vista wont allow the SIMPLE password protecting of a single folder, so I need some good 3rd party software that will allow me to password protect a folder.

I do NOT want to encrypt or compress the folder, just ask me for a damn password when I click on it!

A:password protect a folder in vista

Here are two free options that will hide and password protect folders. While both are free, in one the free version limits the number of folders that can be protected without upgrading to the paid version. I'm also not sure if you can avoid the hidden feature and just use the password feature, but you'll find out if you try them. If you set your system to show hidden files, that shouldn't be a problem in any event.

My Lockbox - Files and Folders Password Protection - Hide Folder Lock Folder Password Protect Folder - FSPro Labs

System Vault | Computer Realm

There are many other options if you search for "Password protect folders" but most are commercial though not too expensive. See if either of the above free options work for you first before spending money.

I hope this helps.

Good luck!

I am trying to password protect a folder or file in win 8.1 desktop have tried program zip winRar or compressed window folder.
I am able to add the password to zip folder , but when i transfer the zip folder to a usb and try and open it on my laptop using vista which has winrar as well, it doesn't even give me the option for password it nor will it open, it will only show properties pop up.
i just want to open the file or folder on any computer but only with password.

Instead of using a .ZIP file on WinRAR, convert the file to a .rar and then add your password.

I recently had my laptop hard drive replaced (using Windows XP SP 2) but the Home & Student 2007 they installed lacked Outlook so I installed my 2003 copy of Office Outlook. A few days later when I booted up, a window with a folder titled 'Protect' appeared holding a single empty folder titled 'S-1-5-18' (WINDOWS/system32/Microsoft/Protect/S-1-5-18). Research suggests this should contain only files associated with the Administrator, but I'm not on a network, and it continues to appear whenever I bootup. Can anyone suggest a way of solving this problem? Thanks!

A:HELP..Something wrong in Microsoft\Protect folder

I have the same issue on my laptop. I have noticed, once I could see all the files (little over 900,000), that the the first filename datestamp goes to 11/23/2006 and the last one is 11/04/2007. Now, I have had this laptop two years prior to the first file and the file writing to this folder stopped about 3 weeks ago.
I can not backup my drive using Ghost because of failures scanning this folder [C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService\Application Data\Microsoft\Protect\s-1-5-19]. I can't virus scan because it takes over 10 hours. It is driving me crazy. I have renamed, changed attribute, moved this folder some where else and I am still afraid of deleting this folder due to the known reasons. It is related to the localservice account / group and I definitely don't want to loose all my installations.
However, a friend of mine at work recommend imaging this laptop and installing the image on a vmware and then deleting this folder and see what happens. However, I am afraid that the initial image processing may fail too.
Has anyone got back to you on this issue with some kind of a direction at all???
Any information will help.

See the Section on Sharing over a Network in the Documentation. You'd want to use the second option. It only has to be mounted read only if more that one system would be mounting the container at the same time.

Hey guys.

I recently downloaded this file encrpytion program :

It was working good until a few weeks later when suddenly all my locked folders changed into a control panel icon.

Usually to unlock it, i would just have to double click the folder & enter my password but this time when i double clicked it, it just open the control panel. Right clicking on the folder doesnt work either, theres no Unlock option. Theres no way i can view the folder contents!

I tried using TWEAKUi to repair desktop icons but it still didnt work.
One thing i noted was when i tried to delete that particular locked folder, the folder name was very long & included some CLSID numbers.

Please help. Thanks.

A:External Harddrive

First step, Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Restore. Create a restore point and name it something like "Before USB Fix". This is to bail you out if something goes wrong during the following process and makes things worse.

Create a file with NOTEPAD containing the following lines and save it as FIX.REG
-------------------------- Use text after this line --------------------------------

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Environment]

-------------------------- Use text before this line --------------------------------

Double click on FIX.REG and say yes to the Merge Into Registry question.

Unplug ALL USB devices.
Open Device Manager.
View, Show Hidden Devices.
Uninstall all devices under USB Controllers.
Uninstall all devices under Disk Drives that you know are not present.
Uninstall all devices under Storage Volumes. Say no to any reboot prompts until you are finished. Also, if a Storage Volume doesn't uninstall, ignore it and move to the next one.
If you have a yellow ? with unknown devices, uninstall all of the entries there as well.

When this is done, reboot TWICE.

Reconnect the USB devices and see if they're recognized properly.

NOTE: If you have a USB keyboard and/or mouse, you'll have to modify the instructions and leave enough parts for those to function. I don't have one yet, so I haven't had time to modify the instructions.

Hello All,

I keep having an issue with my Maxtor My Touch 4 USB hard drive on my Windows 7 64 bit desktop (Dell XPS 8300). Randomly on power ups of my PC, this external hard drive is not recognized and shows as an "Unknown Device" under the USB controllers in Device Manager. To fix this issue, I can uninstall one of the two "USB Root Hubs", reboot, and the hard drive will reappear.

Why would this hard drive show correctly after one boot up and not another when nothing on the PC has changed? And how can I keep this from happening?

Thanks for your input.
