I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.
I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)
I bought a toshiba satellite m -s on April It has an intel pro wireless bg adapter - driver v I have it connected a netgear wgr v router it has a problem maintaining a constant speed I watched the network monitor on the notebook and it always shows a quot connection excellent quot however the speed is not constant - it will vary from - issue pro intel wireless speed connection 2200bg wireless mbsp to wireless connection speed issue - intel pro wireless 2200bg mbsp - but seldom does it maintain the mbsp on I sent the machine to toshiba - they replaced the network adapter - or so they said and wiped the hard drive and reinstalled the original software I rec d the machine back and find that the problem has not changed - it still will not maintain a steady speed so viewing files on other pcs on the lan takes forever and page loads on the net can also occupy too much time I have an older toshiba satellite with a netgear wireless wireless connection speed issue - intel pro wireless 2200bg wg t adapter I have watched the monitor on that one and it will show connection excellent and maintains a steady speed of mbsp these two machines can be sitting side by side or in separate rooms and still the old one will maintain it s connection and speed but the new will not maintain the speed I called toshiba up again and they want to say it s my router I explained to them that another toshiba on the same network does not faulter -- so how can it be the router they didn t want to but they are quot granting quot me service to send the machine back to them again I haven t done that yet as I thought I would see if there was some real help elsewhere -- like perhaps here just to be on the CYA side I updated the firmware on the netgear router - the problem remained also after reading several wireless issues on this board and learning how to do pings and such I did wireless connection speed issue - intel pro wireless 2200bg run the DrTCP and changed the mtu to dsl modem netopia caymen series router netgear v windows xp home - on all computers anyone have any idea why the new toshiba will not maintain a speed on the same router as the old toshiba that continues to work and maintain a speed I would prefer to resolve this issue without having to send it off to toshiba again as I m not convinced they actually checked the problem before swapping parts and reformatting nbsp
Hi I'm currently having a problem with my win7 64 bit desktops wireless speed. It has recently decided to slow to a crawl I'm talking to the point where the speed is measured in bytes not kilobytes when accessing the net and downloading files. I know it's the computer not my network as other wifi gear still works at full speed.
The only change I have made is to switch antivirus from kaspersky to mcafee, I use a Asus wl-138g v2 wifi card( I know it's old but it's been very reliable until now). Any help would be apreciated, thanx in advance.
Sorry you are having issues dis0wned1!
Disable, or uninstall and burn (with a match) Mcafee.... I had the same issue on a clients lappy! Removed Mcafee and issue went away!
I am not seeing anything higher than 54.0 mbps connection speeds with my N wireless set up. Any input or help would be greatly appreciated!!!
My equipment/cable service is as follows:
Cablevision Optonline with Boost (30 downstream/5 upstream/100 mbps wired LAN)
Gateway M6817 with Vista Home Premium/IntelŪ Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN
2 gb ram, 250 HD, Intel Centrino Duo Core 2, 1.5 ghz processor
Belkin Wireless N model #F5D8233-4
Router settings: WPA2PSK/AES
b/g/n mode (laptop does not connect on N only mode)
***I also downloaded the most recent firmware/drivers for the network card and Belkin router***
Ok, so me and my counterparts have not been able to figure this out for about a month now. I bought a wireless usb adapter(b/g/n) for my rig and it was fine for a long time until about 2 months ago when I at somepoint started not getting full throughput.
My laptop(a/g/n) gets 50mbps and the adapter(b/g/n) now gets 30mbps. No, putting my rig next to the router doesn't help. The only way I can get full speed is via ethernet.
I've plugged in the bgn into my laptop and it still gets full.
Today, I've tried a friend's pci adapter and it only made a 1mbps difference.
Did the wireless adapter come with a software installation cd? If so, I would remove any wireless related drivers and the software, then reinstall the required drivers and software.
Could also try accessing the router from your laptop - there should be an option to restart/reset the modem. I've fixed speed related issued in a similar way.
I'm looking to buying a wireless router. My desktop however will be directly pluged into the router. So will my download speed etc... be faster on the draft N rather then then the G? or will they both be the same exact speed?
depends on what models your looking at. If they are both 10/100 then you should get the same wired performance from both animals.
I have four computers that are connected at any given time to the home network. I believe have two issues here.
The first, all of the computers connect and surf the Internet at very slow speeds. Sometimes it seems like I'm back on Dial-up. My MacBook (which is my main computer I work from) connects to the Internet with an Ethernet cable directly into the DSL box. Even if I turn the other three computers off in the office I still run slow on the Internet. Any thoughts on how to improve this? My DSL provider says its an issue with our setup. Great thanks for the help!
Second, my Mac overall seems to be running very slow. I have over 14GB of available space so I would not think that the computer is in overload.
Any support would be greatly appreciated.
If you have more than one computer, and all exhibit the same symptoms, it's hard to believe they're all bad.
Pick one that doesn't exhibit any other issues and do this:
Register at DSLReports and run their Line Quality Tests. It's best to run this test with a direct wired connection to eliminate any wireless issues from the results. It's useful many times to run this test several times, and we'd like to see each of the results. Post the results link from the top of the test display page for each test run here.
The link to post is near the top of the page and looks like:
If you wish to post this result to a forum, please copy/paste this URL
http://www.dslreports.com/linequality/nil/2357195 <- sample only, yours will obviously be different!
and your IP will be disguised.
Copy/paste that link here.
Note: You will have to enable PING (ICMP) request response either in your router (if you have one), or in your computer's firewall for direct modem connections. This is very important to get the most important part of the test to run.
I have a new dual band wireless-AC router Linksys EA and just installed an Intel AC wireless card in Wireless on equipment to 54mb/s Speed Connection limited Wireless-N my laptop The wireless network I am connected to indicates that it is a n connection but in the Wireless Network Connection Status it only shows a connection speed of mb s The router is capable of mb s in Wireless Connection Speed limited to 54mb/s on Wireless-N equipment the ghz band and mb s in the ghz band Using inSSIDer to examine the networks it shows that when I'm connected to the ghz network it has a max rate of mb s I have tried everything I can think of and have searched and searched to no avail If my router is an AC router and my wireless card is an AC card why is my connection speed limited to mb s I also have another computer with a wireless-N card and the connection speed is also limited to mb s on that computer too I've attached a screenshot showing the connection speed
Have you tried checking the various setting in the network folder? Also, your router has a configuration web page doesnt it? a page you would go to; in order to change the router settings? If so, log into that page and check the router settings. Also; even though the router is new I believe you mentioned; there might be a firmware upgrade for the router that you should be able to easily check for. Im not familiar with the type of router you have. but you should be able to get into the settings fairly easily.http://www.sevenforums.com/network-sharing/323962-wireless-connection-speed-limited-54mb-s-wireless-n-equipment.html
when i double click the icon in my systray of the the flashing monitor, which opens my wireless network connection status window, the number next to Speed fluctuates between 11.0 Mbps to 54.0 Mbps. I just updated my dlink wbr 2310 routers firmware to 1.03 from 1.02 because previously i was getting randomly disconnected. Its only been a couple days, but i havnt yet noticed that ive been randomly disconnected anymore, but now my connection speed fluctuates, where with the old firmware, i never once saw it change. what could be causing this change? as its screwing up my online gaming, causing me to lag when it drops way down. I never had a problem with the speed changing before, and cant find any setting that looks like it could be linked to such an event, though im no networking expert, so i may be missing something. what does anyone think of this problem? thanks.
google for a program called Network Stumbler. When it runs, you can see other
wifi systems near by and the real asset is the disclosure of all the channels in use.
pick a channel that is not used
monitor what activities you are performing when the connection rate changes;
it's likely that it only occurs when you're gaming. In that case, the stress of the
networked game is the actual cause of the rate change.

I just got 16GB of Corsair Dominator 1866Mhz ram. The computer has automatically set the speed to 1333Mhz. I have recently just got Virgin Media 10mb connection (wireless). Me and my friend share this connection, he has a mac i have a pc(laptop). It seems that my friend can get near enough full speed with downloads etc (tested on speedtest.net), my friend got nearly 10mb download speed, however I averaged at 6mb. Another example, my friend downloaded a file from a website, the speed went at about 1.5mb/s, I then downloaded the exact same file directly after his download had finished, my average download speed was 250kb/s.
My wireless card is "intel(r) pro/wireless 3945abg", it is a 54mb/s card so it should be more than capable to get the full 10mb/s that is offered to me. Any help in how to 'de-restrict' my card to obtain the full speed?
Any help is appreciated!
Thanks in advance
Just got an EVGA GTX570 Superclocked GFX card. Card works like a dream! One thing though. EVGA Precision will now only let me take the fan speed up to 85%. Can anyone tell me why or how to fix the issue? I have completly uninstalled the drivers and then reinstalled them but i can still only acheve 85% fan speed.
Hi, i am using a zoom modem. i am connected but the speed is slow. on checking the router status it is showing the downstream speed as 1728 and upstream as 448, but when i run a online speed test it gives a speed of 130kb/s and upload as 377Kb/s.On the router by gateway is showing as 188.8.131.52 and the ip is showing as
On CMD the gateway is 10.0.0.2 and the same ip.
Please suggest what i need to do to get the same speed that is showing on router status.
hi the problem is resolved it was the problem with the modem i bought a new linksys modem and now i am geting the same spped as showing on the router status, but will any one suggest what may be the issue with the zoom modem.
Hello, I have bought this laptop, in the product specification it tells me the ram speed should be ddr3 1600 MhzI have downloaded bios updates, and now the HP Support assistent tells me my ram speed is only 800 Mhz??I went inside bios but it doesn't give me options to change ram speed. 800 Mhz is slow. is there a way to change itback to 1600 or at least 1333 Mhz? Regards
@ginoversace?, welcome to the forum. Your RAM is Double Data Rate (DDR). Therefore, if you take 800 MHz x 2 you have 1600 MHz. Please click the Thumbs up + button if I have helped you and click Accept as Solution if your problem is solved.http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Hardware-and-Upgrade-Questions/Ram-Speed-Issue/td-p/5778237
I am taking a class at my school, and they lent us these older Dell laptops that run at 1.3ghz, have 800mhz fsb, and contain 256mb ddr ram (loaded up bios on the computer to see). What I can't figure out is the fact that whenever I log on using the schools user name, the computer takes a good 30 seconds logging on, and starts out with 100% usage of the cpu, although only has 22 processes. I end around six or seven of them, although the computer speeds up, it is still slow. It could probably use a good defragmenting, though it wouldn't slow down that much, right? Also, the computers are very restricted. I know some bugs with Xp that can remove the administators password, but I won't touch these computers further than I have.
I don't know if there are 1.3 GHZ CPU's with a 800MHZ FSB. I think those 800MHZ FSB CPU's are Northwood's C (A or B, donīt know ), and Prescotts.
There are 1.3GHZ P4's, with 400MHZ FSB, some P3's with 133FSB, etc.
Regarding the machine, I'd defragment it, but it would take a while. I don't think that you have time to do it.
Also, it could have viruses, and crap like that.
Anyways, 1.3 GHZ is a little slow for windows XP, so don't expect miracles, especially if they have a normal coppermine Celeron CPU.
I am having a strange issue. My wired download speed is .80/mbps while my upload is 8.5/mbps. The connection is FIOS 35/35 and I am having zero issues with any other cpu on the network wired or wireless.
This is a new machine with a fresh install on it. The only 'third party' app is Chrome.
Network setup is follows:
Verizon FIOS ont box > Cisco E1000 Router > Linksys 24port 10/100 switch
This box is plugged into the switch at the end of the chain. I have swapped cables and have tested different machines. Everything else is working fine but not this machine.
Is that the speed that you are seeing when you download a file or is it through a speed test?
Also, if that is the speed while downloading a file but your speed test is fine; Does the download start high then drop down?
Ran into a bit of a snafu wondering if some kind soul s might take pity and offer a hand I ve had this computer home built for a few years and never had any problems with it I turned on the computer yesterday and the BIOS is showing the incorrect CPU it shows Athlon XP I can t remember what it used to say I think but I m not Windows XP is showing my speed as Ghz which is Mhz less than it Speed Issue CPU used to show as it used to show xGhz I don t know exactly what my CPU is so I don t know what to look for when changing my CPU Speed Issue FSB multiplier and such I used CPU-Z hoping it would give me some clue but it is also telling me I have as an AMD Athlon XP Barton Currently my multipler is set at and my bus speed is Can anyone help me locate my missing Mhz Thanks nbsphttps://forums.techguy.org/threads/cpu-speed-issue.801691/
I recently added memory to my Gateway FX 7026 quad core. After I was done with the process, during the post process an error flashed across (too quick to capture unfortunately), but it had to do with a Microsoft Handler of some sort. The net result is that my cpu cooling fan is running constantly at top speed now. I have had the system for 6 months and it has never run like this before.
Hello Erekosa, welcome to Vista forums!
Seeing that you're having issues with new RAM installed and 'handler' issues; it may be that the 'new' RAM is bad! (it happens)
The best option would be to burn Memtesr86 to a CD and test each stick individually for at least one full pass.
Keep us informed!
I have a dell demension 3000 ( i know nothing special) The original specs were a 512mb ram and a 2.8ghz p4 and i have upgraded it to 2gb of ram and a ati radeon X1550 256mb graphics card. I just reformatted from xp home to xp pro and i have noticed a sever slow down in the computer before battlefield 2 maps would load within 2 to 3 mins and ran smooth now they take close to 5 and are jitterey in the game and simple task on the computer are all jittery and slow to what could be causeing this. is it xp pro or something else. I have ran virus scan and several disk defrag waht could be wrong.
Does that computer come with onboard graphics? And if so did you disable it in the BIOS and or uninstall it in device manager? Was the Pro installed fresh? Have you tried uninstalling then reinstalling the GPU drivers? In the BIOS you'll find a setting that says Init Display First. If you switched from onboard to a graphics card that need to be changed from PCI to AGP or PCI express depending on the systems configuration. The other thing is when the graphics become jerky like that it is often either a GPU unable to handle the applications graphics (like an old card trying to play a new game), or it's a GPU heat issue, but with the heat thing you would probably be getting artifacts (patchy areas that aren't rendering properly) as well.
as subject say my internet connection on this computer is only getting half of the speed I should be getting. this has been tested with three different connections, two wifi and the LAN.
Download speeds are slow as well. I have a 20mbps down and 1mbps up. I can achieve about 10mpbs down and 500kbps up.
All other computers on the network are running win 7 pro x86 and have full speed.

Could be a bad network driver, configuration issue, bad cable, conflict with another device on wifi, dns, etc
Can you go to start>search>type cmd>right click and run as admin>ipconfig /all

I have connected a wireless G (netgear, usb) to another computer in my house. It is less than 75ft away from my DSL router. I know distance and sharing of bandwidth can slow the internet speed down, but it is really really really slow. Anyone know of any easy fixes? The computer is less than a year old and it is a dell and XP home is the OS.
I've recently moved home, and because of the distance from the router, am forced to be wireless. now, we have a cable line that is generally very fast.
When I try to download files I only get like 50KBPS. I was thinking due to the distance that was what was killing performance, since If I moved my computer out to the router my download speeds jumped to almost 900-1MBPS. Recently however, I purchashed a laptop for work/pleasure, and when I was downloading I was pulling 790Kbps, and the laptop was right next to my PC. My desktop/router are both wireless N, but the laptop has only a G capability. What would cause such a degraded performance on the desktop versus the laptop. As far as I can tell, my PC is spyware free, and the laptop Specs wise is not nearly as powerfull. Any insight is greatly appreciated
After some tinkering, I switched the broadcast mode of my router to G only, and speeds increased greatly.
I have a dell inspiron e1705 i have 10mb fiber internet 2 laptops speed test at about 8.9 mb the dell only connects at 1.7 mb all of them are wirless.been through the configs can't find anything slowing it down any suggestions?
Make sure you have the latest correct driver for the wireless adapter (from Dell's site if it's an integrated adapter).
What speed do you get on that PC with ethernet?
I am using a Linksys G PCI Adapter with SRX (WMP54GX). I am sharing with my neighbor who has the router. My speed is slower than her speed. (she has come over with her laptop) and the signal strength is low to good. I am running XP home SP2. Is there any way for me to increase the speed?? Any help is appreciated.
sometimes the speed will reduce because of signal strength - does she have the exact same wireless hardware make/model as you.
also there maybe an option in the wireless adapters setting to change the setting - it may be set to type B rather than B and that would make the speed slow anyway.
Re Johnwill comment - my mistake here, I'm thinking of transfering data between PC's and that slows down around my house from 22MB to as little as 2MB However,my internet connection is only 1MB so we notice NO difference from the internet. also when I hover oveer the wireless icon you can see the speed, and as I move around the speeed drops - BUT again no impact on interent connection
So Just because your speed is different to hers on the icon - that should still make little difference to the page loading - unless your PC only has 64MB of memory and your running XP with loads of other applications running....
I have a Dell D630, previously running Vista. After some minor TCP Window adjustments I had no problem maxing out my circuit on a speed test at 20Meg. Now with a clean W7 install and multiple different trys to adjust things, the fastest I can seem to get it is around 13Meg. Any suggestions?
no reason to tweak the TCP.... tis a myth IMO... i havent tweaked anything on this particular install and i dont see any changes from the times i tweaked it on previous installs. try resetting back to default.http://www.sevenforums.com/network-sharing/10779-wireless-speed.html
My friend sent me a message about his laptop. He formatted it last night because it was running very slow, but the problem continues.
What sort of things should he look at to fix his issue?
Thank you in advance.
Hi guys after installing some new RAM i checked CPU-Z to see if all was ok, and it doesn't seem to be.
I bought some Crucial Ballistix 8Gb 1866MHz, however is doesn't seem to be running at 1866 more like 667MHZ.
I have a Gigabyte GA-970A-DS3 and a AMD FX-4100
Is there way i can force the speed on the RAM to 1866?
Any input is greatly appreciated.
CPU-Z reports the clock frequency of the RAM. DDR (DDR2, DDR3) transfer data twice per clock tick, so CPU-Z reports 667MHz for DDR3-1333.
Most motherboards seem to run DDR3-1333 and up at DDR3-1333 by default. To get the higher frequency, you'd either need to set the BIOS to use XMP, or manually set the RAM frequency and timings.
Hey Techist Community I was wondering if you guys could help shed some light on this issue since it's been puzzling me for a couple of days now I recently bought a new wireless router which is wirelessly bridged with my Router Modem downstairs all setup fine on my laptop it shows down and up through the ethernet cable excellent stuff However on my desktop PC using the SAME ethernet cable I get down but zilch upload on speedtest net the upload doesn't even start to test it OS Windows -bit Professional Ethernet Driver Installed Killer E Gigabit Ethernet Controller Downloaded latest version from the MSI website earlier Motherboard MSI Z -G Gaming Socket HDMI D-Sub DVI -Channel Audio ATX Motherboard So ye laptop gets down and up then using same cable and not moving the router whatsoever I put it in my desktop PC and I get down and zero up I believe Upload LAN Speed Issue this is a hardware issue which Is why I posted it here but if I've posted in the wrong section then please accept my apologyhttp://www.techist.com/forums/f77/lan-upload-speed-issue-277107/
Okay here s a real head-scratch-er About days ago I started noticing some serious speed issues with web browsing while using my wireless router Every once in a while I will notice little differences during what may be peak hours and whatnot Internet issue Serious speed but this is far worse I decided to do a speed and ping test and I got an F on my network that Serious Internet speed issue normally receives a low A or high B I ran a gamut of spyware tests and I am clear there Anyway the real thing that is confusing me is I attempted to connect via a hardline the cable I use to connect to my wireless router so I at least Serious Internet speed issue know it s functional but the network was unidentifiable and I could not get an internet connection but when I reconnected my wireless router and let everything restart I was able to connect wirelessly using the same modem that would not connect me through an ethernet cable I have a Belkin n wireless router and I would appreciate any help available Thanks nbsp
Are you remembering to power cycle (unplug for 30 seconds) the modem when switching the device connected to it?
What download/upload do you get with a connection directly to the modem with Speedtest.net? With an ethernet connection to the router? With a wireless connection to the router?

That is not a bad speed at all. The advertized speed is the maximum, rarely achieved in real situations. The location of your internet connection is where WildBlue's servers connect you to the internet.
Not sure what to say about your video problem except that when I had a 2 mbps connection, I watched YouTube without many delays. A lower quality feed may help.
Hello everyone, I am using a linksys WRT54GS wireless router and usually works fine, but lately I noticed it's been getting slow speeds and then when I restart the router it goes back to normal and very fast for about 20-30 minutes (could vary and be longer sometimes). But then after that it goes back to it's slow speed until I restart it again.
When I bypass the router it works fine with direct connection, all my firmware is upgraded, getting 100% signal strength, it's not just my computer because when I ping from the router admin panel it gets all request timed out aswell.
Thanks for any help I can get.
what would cause a slow wireless connection?
the computer thats wired is fast enough...
but on the toshiba it takes 20 to 35 seconds for google to open...
what i have tried:
i have updated the browser to internet explorer 7
i installed firefox 184.108.40.206

I am using a D-Link DIR-655 router on a Windows Home Server network.
When I connect the WHS to a cable upstairs (short cable) I get Gigabit connection speed, however when I put the server downstairs (10 metre cable), I only get 100 Mb LAN speed.
The only difference is the CAT-5e cable and length.
Do I need a shielded CAT-5e or a CAT-6 cable.
The WHS box needs to be downstairs.
Ok, I'm stumped by my internet issue. Maybe you can shed some light on it.
Ping is averaging 11000ms, upload 0.01-0.07, download 0.2-0.4
Here's the setup: AT&T modem --> Linksys Router --> 2 simple switches --> computers
What I tried:
1. I plugged in a laptop directly to the modem and speed is back to normal.
2. I swapped out a cat 5 cable between the modem and router and speed was back to normal for a few minutes, then bad again.
3. I swapped out the router with a new one and speed was back to normal for a few minutes, then bad again.
So the router is fine. I don't think it's the switches if everything is working fine for a couple minutes. Also, my wireless is fast and then bad again when I tried swapping stuff out.
i am downloading google softwares with fast speed but slow on other sites slow speed.....
I mean when i download any google softwares and youtube videos ..download speed will be about 1Mbps but when i download from any sites like softpedia.com or other sites ..download speed will be about 25 kbps...please guide me ...
First what kind of internet service do you have, and what speed.
Test your internet using dsl reports, or speedtest. I prefer speedtest: Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test
How are you connecting to the internet, wired or wireless. Also as a side note the slow download speeds could also be on the downstream server end. The number of simultaneous downloads, they might throttle back the server to save bandwith, etc.
I'm running a DSL connection from a router to my wireless laptop. Regularly my speeds aren't quite as advertised but I still get 2-4 Mb/s generally. Lately it seems my web browsing has been sluggish and doing a speed test, this is proven.
However, bittorrent downloads go much faster than normal browsing.
Can anyone explain to me why this might be? I thought my slow speed could be due to my latency, but that doesn't explain to me why bittorrent is so much faster!
This laptop comes with the Qualcomm atheros qca61x4 speed. It is supposed to be a x4 card, but it seems to only be running at x1 with a link speed of 433.3 Mbps. Any thoughts? I have a Linksys WRT54G wireless router. I have a HP Pavillion DV5000 Laptop. I have cable service for internet. When I use my wireless router for my laptop, I get 1.5 mbps for a download speed. When I use my wired connection, I get over 5mbsp. How can I get the wireless speed closer to the 5. I know I probably won't be able to get 5, but I think I should get more. My connection speed for the wireless route shows 54.0 mbps in my taskbar. I use Windows XP, AVG Virus, Comodo Spyware. Thanks in advance for the help
One possible cause is wireless interference. NetStumbler www.netstumbler.com can help check for noise and other wireless networks.
I m using Virgin s cable broadband I ve a question about the speed of my broadband in broadband speed ??? Wireless particular the one that I receive on my laptop and wondered Wireless broadband speed ??? if anyone around may be able to point me in right direction I ve a PC upstairs connected to Virgin s modem amp wired connected to PC After upgrading my broadband speed to MB from MB When running online speed check on different website the PC upstairs shows around MB of speed however on laptop it only shows around MB Laptop shows signal strength of wireless router as quot very good quot understandably Wireless broadband speed ??? upstairs it show quot excellent quot due to its close proximity to router However when I m next to router i e when signal strength shows quot excellent quot and when I run a search the test shows the speed of around - MB I ve disabled ZoneAlarm firewall Spybot anti-spyware and AVG s anti-virus software when running this speed test but it s made no difference whatsoever amp remains just under MB I ve also ensured that the channels set on router and my wireless chip on laptop is same Router s default setting s channel and I ve ensured the same set for my wireless chip on on laptop as well I ve had new modem amp router sent out by the Virgin people due to this but the problem continuous I m afraid Can anyone tell why I fail to get around or just under MB of broadband speed on my laptop Can investing in new amp better router i e quot N quot router make any difference in broadband speed though bearing in mind it shows better speed at close proximity to router than running test result downstairs Though why would distance from router affect quot broadband quot speed shouldn t it just affect the connectivity quot strength quot alone nbsp
I think you'll find that some wireless cards just don't yield the maximum throughput. I've run speed checks on my connection here, 15mbit/15mbit fiber, and my Toshiba running XP-Pro gets 15mbit, but the HP running Vista-32 only manages around 9mbit. Never been able to squeeze any more speed from the HP on the speed test.
My old router (Linksys WRT54GL) is acting up so I figured it's time for me to change it.
Looking for a new one, I didn't know what all those N numbers mean until read this article:
Well the download/upload speed that I subscribe from my local cable company is 75Mbps/5Mbps.
I mean, even with the N300 router, that should be fast enough right?
Why do I need to get N600 or even N900 routers when the bottle neck is at the speed from the provider?
Anyway, I'm looking at these routers recommended from these two lists:
Any comments or suggestion for which one?

The advantage would be if you move large files around your LAN partially or totally by Wi-Fi.

As the title might suggest im having a proplem with the speed of my wireless products
I think i should start with exsplaning how my network is connected.
My moms computer is connected to the router, my DSL Modem is also connected to the Router.
I am connect though wireless to the router via an exsternal adapter.
Both the router and the adapter are the newest N1. the router is the Belkin N1 Vison, and my adaptor is the N1 Wireless USB Adapter.
When i first connected too the internet i was resiving speeds of just over 100mbps.
But now i am only getting 54mbps.
I have been to the tech help page on the belkin website and have tried changing the 13 channels.
I have also made sure the the adapter and the router are both up to date with there drivers.
Any advice or suggestion would be great.
Is your wireless network secured? If not, maybe you have a freeloader (who doesn't have the matching pre-n adapter).
My sister's laptop is able to get 300 mbps wireless connection from anywhere inside the house. But my computer is only able to get 120-150 mbps. Is it because of my network card?

What is your network/wifi card?
I recently had to buy a new laptop because my old one had a bunch of issues.
It is a Dell, and the wireless card is a 10/100 Ethernet, 802.11b/g/n Wireless LAN
When I do a speed test, I am hitting about 30-35Mbps. My Internet connection has max speeds of 100Mbps, and on my work laptop I can get around 95Mbps wirelessly.
I thought with the /n they could hit speeds higher than 100Mbps? Are there settings I can try changing on the laptop to get my wireless speeds faster, or could it be that the card Dell included just isn't powerful enough to get these speeds?
I don't want to mess with the hardware too much since this was the cause of most problems on my old laptop, but wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions to try.
Thanks in advance,
Make sure you have the latest wireless driver from Dell's web site.
If you show the following we may see some clues as to if and how throughput can be improved.
Please attach a screen shot of the Networks page (don't collapse the Radar, Connection or Signal History) of the Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector. I have 2 wireless laptops, 2007 Acer w/Vista and 2006 Compaq w/XP. Hooked to RR turbo 15mbps. No problem the Acer. It connects @54mbps with a speed of 13-14mbps and all 5 bars on signal strength meter. But the Compaq will connect 48 to 54mbps but only at 2.something to mid 3.44mbps speed with only 3-4 bars on signal strength meter. The speed is definitely slower by the longer time to download pages. If either 'top is connected directly to router with cat5 cable they both connect to internet at 13-14mbps OK. Question. In the Compaq is it possible even tho the built in wireless card works it get weak and not receive the signal as strong and with less speed as when was new? Or whatelse would make it work fine wired direct but slower when going wireless?

Hello everyone I'm new here I came here because my computer has lots of problems Lots of problems that I've been unable to solve despite the fact that I'm fairly capable of fixing computers But the problems I have are unique Or at least I think they are Maybe somebody here can help In this post I'm looking for answers on the biggest problem Speed Connection Wireless I have that is driving me nuts Allow me to explain I am running a Model Compaq Presario I know it's old but it's all I have right now I connect to the internet using a high speed cable wireless connection Specifically a Lynsys wireless modem router My room mate has a PC Machines desktop computer and is always connected at mbps on the same wireless network But my computer is almost always slower My connection speed jumps anywhere from mbps to mbps but most of the time it's on the lower end of the spectrum I'm usually under mbps Considering both my room mate and myself are connecting the the same wireless network It makes sense that my computer is the problem I have deleted large files off my machine and I now have GB of free space I have defraged my drive and my connection speed is still slow At this very moment I'm running at mbps when I should be at mbps I am desperately Wireless Connection Speed seeking advice as to what I should do I'm paying for high speed internet but I'm experiencing dial up speeds

I am running windows on a hp dv laptop and am experiencing extremely slow wireless speeds I have a linksys wrt g v wireless router that is running ddwrt firmware The problem is when i first connect to the router if it has been rebooted or unplugged and plugged back in the wireless speeds on my laptop are normal mbps down but after a few hours or so the speed is reduced to mbps down or less my up speeds stay about the same or maybe reduced a little bit but no where near the amount my down speeds are cut Now at first i thought this might be an issue with the router since it doesn't have stock firmware but with my ps which is on the same wireless network i went to speedtest net and my down speeds are mbps even when doing the same test on my laptop afterwards yields mbps So i'm not sure this is solely a router issue I haven't tried leaving the wired connection in for an extended period of time so i will try that overnight but in the meantime any ideas Thanks for the help Matt Edit with a straight wired connection I'm actually getting mbps down so i'm apparently experiencing some slowdown even when it's working good but that still doesn't explain the enormous drops Also the ping time is cut in half with the wired connection from - to
So after leaving the ethernet wall connection plugged in all night it is still working fine so now i'll try the wired connection to the router and see if that connection holds.http://www.techsupportforum.com/forums/f217/wireless-speed-slowdown-483302.html
My wireless download speed has dropped to about .38Mbs since I installed Win7Pro64bit. I've troubleshot with MS, HP and AT&T and still no luck. Wired it's about 1.4 Mbs so there is something amiss. Have the latest wifi driver, no router, just an AT&T/2Wire modem, 2901HG.
can we get your system specs?http://www.sevenforums.com/network-sharing/55393-wireless-download-speed-38-mbs.html
I live in an area that doesn't have cable or DSL so I opted for buying a wireless card for my computer. That has helped a lot but I can only get two bars of signal strength and I still don't get enough bandwidth to get my favorite internet radio station without constant rebuffering. There is an external antenna jack on the card, so I wanted to buy an antenna (a rare thing, apparently) but I don't want to spend the extra 150.00 if it won't make a difference. So, my question is: Is signal strength proportional to bandwidth?
Nobody at the Sprint store had a clue and even the "geeks" at the local electronics store didn't know!
Hello. Ive a smal problem. Im using 3 computers at home. One desktop and 2 laptops. All of them are connecting to the internet wireless. The speed that Im getting on all of them is between 300 and 400 kbps!!!!! But If I connect any of them with the router thru ethernet cable the speed is jumping to between 5-6 mbps which is a looooooooooot faster. My question is what could be the problem?????????? On desktop Im using the Belkin USB Adapter and my router is Siemens SE587.

You really should secure your wireless to make sure nobody is hogging your bandwidth. Use WPA(2)-PSK if all your devices support it. At least use WEP 'cause that will slow somebody down longer than your "hiding" SSID or making them spoof a MAC address.
Are you sure your speed drops are not caused by your other devices using bandwidth?
firstly my adapter is a Dlink DWA- or thats wireless speed annoyance. whats listed in the device manager over the past month or two lve noticed slowdowns on browsing and downloading the strange part is that rebooting generally resolves the issue however that said lve once noticed when lve encountered this issue that it seemed my laptops wireless was slowed wireless speed annoyance. down as well around the same time but l cant be certain its a related issue as its only happened once while my PC was doing it its just the fact that rebooting seems to wireless speed annoyance. be the only resolution to the issue that bothers me lve tried rebooting the router when it happens but that doesnt help was just wondering what other avenues to try Edit l will note that after quite a bit of searching lve found a newer driver which lm currently trying you see the download page for my adapter specified above doesnt show the rev d wireless speed annoyance. adapter thats whats on the side of the adapter and noted in device manager so after ages spent downloading the newer driver the one l was using well the one l have backed up in my drivers folder on my PC was version it was only by chance that l remembered and found a newer driver the russian site for dlink tho l had to search using the driver folder name which l didnt think to do until now l will see how it goes but one thing l do know is most times l reboot is down to wireless slowness recent reboots on average are days but the past couple lve been getting slowness after about a day where google took a few mins to load my routers internal settings would take ages to load not to mention lm going to question why its taking mins to download meg when after a reboot l get that down in under seconds on good days l have meg down speeds on bad days around meg either way l shall find out some point soon if the issue is resolvedhttp://www.sevenforums.com/network-sharing/391411-wireless-speed-annoyance.html
Hey, just brought myself a new Wireless N USB adapter and I used to have a DWA-110 D-Link 802.11g, I've purchased it because I've been wanting to watch video files on one computer but they can be stored on several others as we have 1 laptops and two other PC's in the house).
Before I was getting 36Mbps (out of the 54Mbps?), but with the new wireless N device I'm only getting 14.5Mbps even though it's got more signal bars and what not.
Browsing the internet is fine but I thought I would be able to get like 60Mbps+ connection with this new adapter?
Can you or do you have access to your router? You might have to navigate to the wireless tab of your router and fiddle with the wireless mode. If it's on a Mixed Mode, change it to an N or G/N, you may also try this method from your Wi-Fi device. It seems to be that your Wi-Fi device is not hand-shaking with your router's wireless mode.
Im fairly adept at networking so I think Im missing something simple here. I just formatted an HP laptop and the wireless is working ok through the windows wireless zero config. There were 2 sofpaq's for the wireless on HP's site but their online support is telling me to only get 1 of them. The reason I even went there was because it only connects to wireless networks at 11Mbps and its supposed to be capable of 54Mbps. Ive now downloaded the software they recommend and installed it but there is no change. I cant find anywhere to change the speed either. I thought at one time I saw a setting in my Linksys router to adjust bandwidth but Im not finding that.
As far as the laptop, its an HP pavilion ze4700 w/XP home. Any tips on the connection speed?
Hi guys. i am a new guy on useing wireless. and since i bought router. my download speed is going down and down ..

Just upgraded from a 6mbs DSL to AT&T Uverse Max 18, which is an 18mbs line. Our wired pc gets the full 18mb. Our wireless notebooks won't beat 6.7mbs. Each notebook (HP and Dell) has the manufacturers 54G wireless 802.11 b/g card. AT&T tells me those cards won't go above 6.7mbs. They tell me if I go to an 802.11 N wireless card I can possibly reach 10mbs or 12mbs. Anyone know if that's true or if my existing config can exceed 6.7mbs?
My 54mbps wireless G router transfers about 10mbps at a distance of 8m. I believe they are telling the truth. The rated speed is alot slower that the actual throughput.
I am sharing my neighbor s wifi it s okay she knows Now here s what is happening I live right below her and coincidentally right under her router which is a combo westell router modem We re using Verizon DSL wireless curiosity speed My wireless utility says I m getting decent enough connections anywhere from - mbps I just ran a speed test and the speed is what it should be around - kbps up and from - down depending on where the server is located Yet the speed of my browser is really slow I just upgraded to Firefox but it was the wireless speed curiosity same before It takes forever for pages to load almost at dial up speeds sometimes For instance when I just went to go to the Speakeasy speed test site it took forever to load and when i ran the test it said I was getting a good speed I ran network stumbler and there are three people on channel including us Would that make much of a difference But still why wireless speed curiosity would the speed test show the results it does if the others were interfering Or is it my laptop I don t think it is because I get good results on other wifi networks Any clue as to what s going on and how to fix it It s making me nuts Thanks Bernie nbsp

I have 2 HP computers with the same specs that use the same Intel Pro Wireless card. On speedtest.net, one of the computers averages a download speed of about 4000 bps while the other one averages about 8000 bps. I have tested both computers in the exact same location in my home. On the slower computer, I have tried virus scans, spyware scans, trojan scans, registry cleaners, etc and everthing comes up clean. Does anyone have any idea why one computer is so much slower than the other? Is there any thing else that I can check out on the slower one? Any help would be much appreciated!
Is there anyway to not lose half my speed when running wireless?

I'm using a Belkin F6D3000(Atheros Chipset) (g/a/b) wireless adapter that is able to get 108mbs on XP Pro(with and without the "controlling" software). The Problem is, on the 7000 x64 Beta, it will only connect at 54mbs, even with the newest Atheros drivers. Is there some way to fix this, or does 7000 just have problems with super G?
Because it's surely only using one standard instead of using both a and g standards to achieve 108 Mbps under windows 7 (and under vista?). 802.11g (2.4Ghz -54Mbps) + 802.11a (5Ghz - 54Mbps) = 108Mbps
Your adapter is also marked as unsupported for vista by Belklin -> Belkin : Support : Vista
Yet, they give instruction to install drivers on Vista -> Belkin : Support : Vista Installation Instructions and Atheros has Vista 32bits and x64 drivers for the chipset your card is using.

So go figure.
Before somebody tells me something I already know, yes I am aware that wireless is supposed to be slower than ethernet, but my problem is something legitimate.
I just purchased a D-LINK DIR-655, which seems to be working fine. But here's the issue I'm having, when I am connected via ethernet, according to a speedtest.net connection, I get a 5.0 kb/s download rate. However, with wireless, I get a 1.6 kb/s.
However, my girlfriend's Macintosh when connected to the WIRELESS network, on the same test can get 5.6 kb/s.
I have just updated my wireless driver, and this didn't seem to fix it, and it is 802.11 G capable.
For reference, my wireless network adapter is:
Dell Wireless 1350 WLAN Mini-PCI Card
I am operating
Windows XP SP2
Pentium M 1.6Ghz

Any help/info is appreciated!

Kinda risky to have Internet Connection Sharing enabled when using a router that also uses the 192.168.0.x subnet. Suggest you disable ICS and use dynamic addressing on your wireless TCP/IP properties.
Make sure you have the latest wireless driver from Dell's web site. Use your Service Tag for easier searching.
A conundrum. My mom's Dell Inspirion E1505 runs super slow on her wireless at home. In fact, in the time it has taken me to Google this site, register and make this post, she is still waiting for one page to load.
However, the computer runs normally on the wireless everywhere else.
My Dell, my sister's laptop and an Uncle have all been able to successfully connect to her network and surf without problem.
She's chipped it up, bought a new battery, but the computer continues to run slowly. Any other suggestions?
Please supply the following info, exact make and models of the equipment please.
Name of your ISP (Internet Service Provider).

If you're using a wireless connection, have you tried a direct connection with a cable to see if that changes the symptoms?
For wireless issues, have you disabled all encryption on the router to see if you can connect that way?
For wired connection issues, have you booted in Safe Mode with Networking to see if that changes the symptoms?
Have you connected directly to the broadband modem to see if this is a router or modem/ISP issue?
If there are other computers on the same network, are they experiencing the same issue, or do they function normally?
On any affected computer, I'd also like to see this:
Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:
Type the following commands on separate lines, following each one with the Enter key:
Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.
If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.
I am looking into buying a laptop and have dialup for internet connection . I f I do a wireless network with the desktop will I get a lower connection as far as speed of things .
Sharing a dial-up is going to be slow, at times you may have both computers downloading and that will slow down the internet. Plus you'll need a wireless card for the desktop or a wireless router. Can't get DSL or Cable?

Hi NomadAU, welcome to Seven Forums.
I recently had similar problems with my Netgear DGN2000. It would download on my wired desktop pc at a snails pace. On my laptop, speed was excellent. When I wired my laptop to my router it would load my home page only and gave No Internet connection. If I moved the ethernet cable to any other ports on the router to my desktop pc it would give No Internet connection.
Removing all connection related settings from both pc's and resetting router to factory default did nothing to improve anything. So I bought a Netgear DGN2200v3, now normal service resumed.
My LAN interface connects only with 100Mb/s speed with no reason though it is 1Gbit capable card (Intel 82577LC). I tried it with 3 devices (router, switch, PC directly) and a lot of cables, which are works with 1 GE speed between each other except for Toshiba laptop.
Did anybody meet this problem too? Is there any fix for it?
The integrated Intel 82577LC Lan card supports the 10 BASE-T / 100 BASE-TX and 1000 BASE-T network standards.
Usually you can change some LAN card options in the LAN card properties.
Go to device manager -> LAN card (Ethernet) -> click right and choose Properties.
Switch to ?Advanced? tab.
Now you should see all options which could be optimized

The following may give us enough information to make a recommendation ...
Please attach a screen shot of the Networks page (don't collapse the Radar, Connection or Signal History) of the Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector. If you need help with a screen shot see TSG Posting a Screenshot. FWIW to take screen shots with Windows Vista or latter I prefer to use the built-in Snipping Tool.
Ok so I have been fighting this issue for days with no luck I'll provide as much information as I can and hopefully someone may know a fix or at least some more steps I can take in fixing this issue This is a home user Sky Fiber using Sky's router at Issue Network Speed Windows just over Mbps download His LAN consists of Windows laptop Windows PC iPhones Windows Network Speed Issue Windows laptop - speedtest net shows consitant download speeds of - Mbps Iphones - speedtest net shows consitant download speeds of - Mbps Windows PC - speedtest net shows - Mbps download although at random times during the day can reach - Mbps not often The windows PC was previously Windows when this issue started From the begining on Windows - I upgraded network adapter drivers to the latest version updated bios amp chipset drivers to latest versions with no change I performed virus malware scans and found the PC to have a fair few viruses and malware I did numerous removals with no change Safe mode with networking worked fine At this point I decided it may be a very nasty Virus Trojan Rootkit of somekind that is evading the anti-virus malware programs He had Windows and was looking to upgrade his machine anyway so we though it would be a good time to format the drive and do a fresh Windows install Windows - installed the latest drivers chipset networking adapter graphics card etc and still no change Speed still around - Mbps ocassionaly hitting the expected speed of - Mbps but not very often Safe mode with networking still working fine At this point I'm thinking a driver issue Tried with a wired connection no difference tried taking the wireless adapter out of the machine unistalling the drivers and then testing wired connection same issue Tried disabling IPv same issue Tried turning off the option - allow the computer to turn off this device same issue Tried changing the local computer policy that resevers bandwidth - forgot the actual name - however no change Tried with Windows firewall off and A V off no change All the while it is working in safe mode with networking Motherboard - Gigabyte GA-F A XM-HD Wireless Adapter - Edimax EW- Pin V Has a Realtek chip Wireless Adapter Driver - Realtek RTL CE Wireless Lan n PCI-E NIC Driver Date Driver Version So any help with trying to resolve the issue would be much appreciated a question in my mind is that if the safe mode drivers work fine could I use these drivers in normal mode Assuming the drivers are at fault Kind regards Tom

also a friend of mine said to try and get ahold of a computer cleaner or booster, something along those lines if that will help does anyone have any suggestions on where to find one?http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/439228/having-an-issue-with-computer-speed-and-problem/
After having problems with IE 11 on my old eMachine with Win-10 (Home)/ Comcast server I installed Chrome. It works good but the speed test resulted in 1/3rd the speed of IE 11 or FireFox. Several typical dead end suggestions (Internet ?sperts) I assume that Chrome has some setup problems, but cannot find the cure. Any suggestions? BTW, both IE and FF run ~125 Mps, Chrome~45.
Well, guess no one here knows or cares about this.http://www.tenforums.com/browsers-email/63138-chrome-speed-test-issue.html
I have 20mbps Broadband, today however i re-installed windows, having issues with my speed........
for some reason i can not seem to get past 5mbps
I`ve checked device manager and updated the lan drivers etc
anyone any idea why my line is so slow?
as my brother and a friend in the same street seem to have better results on www.speedtest.net etc
on virgin media gamefiles website, i can download files but yet still getting much slower speeds, i called virgin media they say that my account is fine and still at 20mbps so i have no idea......
anyone any ideas? please?
I have recently chosen a new ISP and am paying for a 1Mbps connection. The problem is that i get a very low download speed of say 16Kbps only when i download using IE. Howver when i use a download manager speeds move up to 100 Kbps and the download gets completed in 1/7th of the time.
Another thing that seems related is that even if i download 6 -7 files at one time (simultaneously) each one will download at around 16 - 18 Kbps totalling to the same overall seed that i expect to get on my 1Mbps connection
Is there something i can try from my end before i blame my ISP?
If you download the same exact file from the same location via another browser, are speeds normal?http://www.sevenforums.com/browsers-mail/157238-unique-downloading-speed-issue.html
I purchased 10? Windows Dell issue? XPS 13..speed/RAM and received my Dell XPS 13..speed/RAM issue? Windows 10? new DELL XPS I intel laptop two days ago I opted for gb RAM and SSD I was torn between this and the macbook pro for university I have never had apple and decided to stick with microsoft just for ease of use with onedrive and what I know I have always heard negative things about windows but have had a chromebook up until now After researching Dell's laptop I thought surely a gb RAM and SSD would mean I would not have any issues unfortunately after onyl two days of using it I am getting slow responses Some examples just clicking on cortana it seems to crash occassionaly I opened a rd tab on Microsoft edge and the screen lagged and crashed for - seconds Opened a PDF from gmail which had pages laptop froze for seconds Opening microsoft word takes way too long and loads for a while My internet is fine IMO is this the laptop Windows or a mixture of both I really thought a laptop of this quality should manage to run windows with no issues Has anyone got any ideas Thankshttp://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/forum/helproom-1/dell-xps-13speedram-issue-windows-10-4603600/
So originally I was using a Rosewill USB HDD Dock with my WD HD103SI 1 TB Hard Drive. Everything went great, but eventually filled that up. I bought a new WD HD103SJ 1 TB Hard Drive, formatted it as NTFS, but the speeds are horrible. Transfer rates say around 2.0 mb/s give or take .5 mb/s, so it takes around an hour to transfer a 4 GB file to the hard drive, whereas it took 4 minutes on my other one. I didn't change any settings, I just plopped a new hard drive into the same HDD dock, but the speeds I am getting on that hard drive are poor. I also noticed that the file text on the hard drive is in blue? not sure why that is...
Hello welcome to TSG forum.
I have just googled the part number you have included in your post "WD HD103SJ" and it comes up with a samsung spinpoint not a Western Digital (WD) like you stated. Is this correct?
I recently reinstalled XP on my computer after erasing my entire HD, the problem is that it seems to be a lot slower for some things. For example, when I open a folder and drag the window across the screen, it's extremely laggy, when it used to be perfectly fine and smooth. Or when I scroll down on a webpage, it's also very slow and the frame rate, I guess, is horrible.
I suspect this might be because the Windows partition is 5GB instead of 30GB on my HD.
Also, I have a USB mass storage device and windows has made it the C:\ drive, and the internal HD is now J:\ How do I correct this?

You disconnect the external hard drive and then do a full re-install of Windows and during it you make it do the drive C:\ First backup any important data and format the drive that the Windows XP is installed on now.
Here are instructions on doing a full install of Windows XP

I am having problems with my internet connection and my connections tray in general. I keep losing my internet connection and then when I try to repair my connection, it doesn't respond. Nothing in the connections tray will respond. When I go to reboot, I get the message that the connections tray is not responding and I have to end it. Does anyone have any experience with this or know what might be happening? Today I called IBM .. I have an IBM Lenovo X61 Tablet .. they told me I needed to reinstall my drivers for my connectivity (they called it the wireless stack .. I downloaded something for power management, hot key driver, wireless card connections, access connections) .. I did that and am still having the same problem .. any suggestions? .. I would appreciate any help! ..
Welcome to TSG:
Things to try:
Change the wireless channel being used .1/6/11 in US
If standalone router, download and :install latest router firmware.

Take a look at the wireless network adapter in device manager.Look at the driver info.See if there is a more current adapter driver for that card on the pc makers web site.
Reset the router to it's default config.Hold the reset button in for at least 15 seconds.
These are most of the basic fixes for intermittent connectivity issues.
I did some with XPS8100 Slow wireless speed searching but did not find the exact problem with the same equipment I am Slow wireless speed with XPS8100 using a Dell XPS with a Atheros DW wireless adapter I have gone through windows reinstalls at the recommendation of Dell Tech support I have had an on site tech bring a new adapter to correct the problem My router is a Netgear Wireless N and have no difficulty in getting to mb sec on my small laptop located next to my but I usually only get a max of mb sec on the and much of the time I only get mb sec or less I use Speedtest net to evaluate Upload speed is normal at each test When the tech was here he had me boot in safe mode with networking and got almost mb but now even safe mode produces no more than to mb I have the latest driver installed I did take a snapshot of my system with Black Box if anyone wants to look at it and comment

I am using a Dell XPS 8100 with a Atheros DW1525 wireless adapter. I have gone through 3 windows reinstalls at the recommendation of Dell Tech support. I have had an on site tech bring a new adapter to correct the problem. My router is a Netgear Wireless N and have no difficulty in getting 5 to 6 mb/sec on my small laptop located next to my 8100, but I usually only get a max of 3 mb/sec on the 8100 and much of the time I only get 1mb/sec or less. I use Speedtest.net to evaluate. Upload speed is normal at each test. When the tech was here, he had me boot in safe mode with networking and got almost 10 mb, but now even safe mode produces no more than 2 to 3 mb. I have the latest driver installed. I did take a snapshot of my system with Black Box if anyone wants to look at it and comment.
Are you using "homegroup" for networking?
Wirefirewall and av are you using?
What is the speed when you connect wired (if you can)
Okay so my situation is this. When I'm connected to my router wirelessly..which is about 50ft. away from the router..I have 3-8mb/s download speed..
But when I connect by etharnet my download is at a constant rate of 35mb/s
I always have a signal strength of 2/5, while my next door neighbors signal is always 5/5 for me..I understand our connections are different..but if there were some type of interference wouldn't my signal still be stronger since it's closer?
As my name implies, I am a true novice when it comes to computers and networking. I recently bought a Netgear 108 Mbps Super Wireless ADSL Router (DG834GT) which is connected to my phone line. In order to access the internet from my notebook, I also purchased a Netgear 108 Mbps USB 2.0 Adapter (WG111T). The connection itself works well, however the Wireless Connection icon on the system tray states that the speed is 54 Mbps. I would have expected 108 Mbps since my notebook is placed next to the router. Have I been sold a 54 Mbps instead of a 108 Mbps adapter? Thanks for your help.
You have to explicitly enable the 108Mbit mode both on the router and the wireless adapter.
Hello I just bought a new Ultrabook from Samsung that came with windows Processor Intel R Core TM i - U CPU GHz RAM GB -bit Connection! I was just wondering, if both the local area network and wireless network connections are enabled on a machine, will the LAN having a (default) speed of 100 mbps and the WLAN having one of 54 mbps, make the overall connection speed increase? As in maybe 154 mbps all together?
