Preferred Solution: Internal DSL Modem w/ External IP + External Router, how to get into local network?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My interpretation is that you have dial-up internet access and are using ICS? Correct?

If the above is correct does the ICS machine connect to the router's WAN port or a LAN port?

So between functions, budget & compatibility I've narrowed my AC router choice to the Asus AC55 which has external antennas or the AC56 which is all internal

Will I see better performance/range with the external antenna router than I will with the internal one?

I will be using this with an Asus AC56 USB 3.0 wifi adapter that also has an external antenna.

Could you possibly help on advising how I could allow a server to connect to another server via http on the same aux network using its external address?

For example,
I need to be able to connect to http://89.99.99.99/Login.jsp on a server that is on the same network as the IIS server hosting this address. Now if I use the internal IP address or servername on this server i.e. http://10.11.12.13/Login.jsp I can connect to the application. What do I have to configure on the firewall to enable this to work? I am new to the world of networking and am not sure what is needed to get this to work.

Any help would be most appreciated.
Thanks

A:Connect using external IP address on internal network

In order to connect to the public IP address, the router used would have to loop back the IP addresses into the network. I've been led to believe that some SOHO routers have that capability, but I've personally never tried to do it. Look in the WAN configuration for the router.

Hi,

I thought, I had got this, but,, potentially, i haven't. I used to be able to do this, when I had a different router/modem

I have a router/modem that I can access in my network, using 192.168.0.1.

It is the "gateway", in this network, to the "internet".

Now, if I go on google, or anywhere else, to find my ip, and, it says, say 95.91.225.xxx, should i not be able to access the router/modem externally, through this ip?

If i do this, say, in IE 9, it can't connect, saying

This page can't be displayed

•Make sure the web address http://95.91.225.xxx is correct.
•Look for the page with your search engine.
•Refresh the page in a few minutes.Click to expand...

Can anyone explain/help?

Cheers

A:Access gateway (router/modem) from external net

You need to make sure that the modem/router supports remote access to the administration pages and that it is enabled. Allowing this is a security risk since a remote attacker could take control of it. You definitely need to use a very secure password when enabling this function

If you are testing remote access while connected on the LAN side of the modem/router, you need to make sure it supports loopback access through its own public IP address. Some routers do not support it.

Your router has to support NAT Loopback, apparently yours doesn't do that. If you can't ping your public IP address from inside the LAN, you don't have it.

Hello,
I recently purchased a Studio 1558 laptop. The specs are below:
Processor: Intel (R) Core (TM) i7 CPU   Q 720 @ 1.60 GHZRAM: 6 GBSystem type: 64-bit operating systemATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470Sound - ATI High Definition Audio Device, IDT High Definition Audio CODECI have plugged in older Dell speakers that I used with my desktop. The sound works fine until I load a webpage, or load a folder etc and then sound will temporarily switch from my external speakers to my internal laptop speakers. This is quite annoying as it happens frequently and sometimes I blare my externals which can't be good if it keeps switching to my internals.
Can anyone recommend a fix? It would be greatly appreciated.

i'm about to purchase a new hard drive for my computer and i'm trying to decide if i should get a large internal HD (500gb) or if i should get a smaler capacity harddrive 250gb with an external drive. I use my computer mostly for music/video and was thinking of using the external drive to store those exclusively and use the internal drive for the OS, hence the wanting a smaller capacity drive as i can't find a use for a 500gb HD just for an os/ a few programs. I'm not a big gammer at all, but i do enjoy playing simulation games like The Sims 2and Startopia, which don't take up much space either. Currently i have 2x80GB drives, one with vista and my music and the other with videos. Guidance much appreciated.

I was wondering, because i believe that ALL external hard drives have an internal in them with a board/adapter to use usb. But i am wondering, is the hard drives in them are exactly the same as a internal without the adapter? Meaning, if i shell out the external and i get the hard drive in it, is it the same as buying an internal with the same size of the hard drive? I am asking because i can get a 120gb for like $30 at walmart and i can shell out the case and use the actual hdd inside and use it for my xbox 360 slim 4gb.

I have in my old computer an internal USB Memory Card reader (reads like 8 formats). It's connected to one of the internal USB controllers. My newer system is pretty similar, but I don't want to have to disable (unplug) external ports like I had to before. My thought was to take a USB cable and cut it. Take the internal; USB card reader, and cut the wires, then splice them to the cord, making the internal card reader external (and portable!)....In my mind this makes sense and should work. Is there anything that would prevent this from working?

I am assuming that when I cut the USB cable, there that the four wires are color coded with the standard colors...

Im running out of room on my internal hard drive and was thinking about getting a 1tb external hd

A few questions...first of all I know that usb might be too slow to play some games, so installing games on the external is a no no then?

What if i just got an internal HD and used an adapter? usb to sata, would that be faster than just using an external hard drive?

I want the fastest storage possible and really would like to run games and videos off it.

by the way I was looking at this my book essential by Western digital
http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=353

A:Internal vs external HD- Which should i get?

Installing them to an external is not a big no, but newer games are going to be totally unplayable. You could, however, get an E-SATA connected hard drive.

SATA to USB is not any faster than using external drives. They are, all in all, just normal hard drives planted inside an enclosure at the factory. Nothing else.

Do you have any reason to get an external? If you just want to have fast storage and run games and watch videos, why not get another external drive? If you want to carry the videos to your friend's place, etc, then yeah, external drive is a decent option.

Aaanyways. If you need an external, then get something like Seagate Freeagent Desk Extreme or Western Digital My Book Home (only model with esata and decent price(recheck this yourself, I'm not 150% sure)).

If you don't need an external, get a Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 or Western Digital Caviar Black/Blue.
Aaalso, of course the eSata is no good if you don't have a plug for it. You'll then need to buy an add-on card to handle that... Also the drives don't come with an eSata cable. You can use the USB for watching movies, but games, and copying lots of files are recommended to be done thru eSata.

A:External HDD to Internal HDD

I'm no professional, so this may not be the most correct answer. Be warned.

It sounds like it should work fine. I would aassume that since it's not originally an internal HDD, you may not be able to mount it. As long as nothing is scratched or jolted around as the HDD runs, meaning there's no damage, I would assume that the files would be just fine.

Hello!

About a year ago I started using an external HDD (Seagate FA GoFlex Desk 1 TB) to store all my files, i.e. documents, videos, music, etc. So whenever I'm listening to music or watching videos, which I'm doing practically all the time, the external HDD is in use. I'm basically using it just like I would use an internal HDD. The only stuff I still save permanently on my internal 500 GB HDD are the OSes (Win 7 and Kubuntu 11.10 dual-boot) and installed software.

Now my question is how bad this actually is for an external HDD in terms of (drastically?) reducing its lifespan? I'm asking because I keep reading that external HDDs aren't really suited for this and are primarily designed for plugging it in once a week or so and doing backups.

Greetings all,

Recently my 500GB external HDD stopped working. the power supply in the case stopped working.I took it out of the case and I've now got it hooked up via SATA as an internal HDD. Working fine but I keep getting SMART errors and warnings that the HDD is about to collapse.

At the moment of writing this I'm copying averything to another external HDD to save my data, so I can't give you the manufacturer name at the moment.
in properties I do get that it is an ST3500830AS ATA Device

Is there some BIOS setting I'm after forgetting, or maybe caused by going from USB external to SATA internal, or should I be really worried about this harddisk?

My pc info will give you any other HW info you may need, or else just ask!

Thanks for any help that can be provided.

I just want to know how to connect/set-up an internal modem to a router so that i will not use Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) of Windows XP because i heard that it is faster to surf the web using router rather than ICS. What kind of router should i use? Should i use a telephone line (RJ 11) or CAT5 RJ45 cable to connect the modem to the router? From the modem, the "line" port (as indicated) should be used to connect to the router port?

how to set-up the network settings in Windows XP using a router?

A:How to connect an internal dial-up modem to a router?

You don't hook a router up to an internal telephone modem. You hook it up to your network interface card (that's the bigger looking telephone jack, RJ45). You hook the other side up to either a DSL moden or a cable modem. You'll need to get with your new ISP for exact configs, but usually the default settings are for DHCP.

Hi.

I have an external Western Digital External HDD (500GB) and it is always connected to my PC. When I start the computer up the BIOS tells me that it cannot find a bootable device. I checked the BIOS priority with the EHDD connected and that was put at a higher priority than the internall HDD. Now, the problem is, the Internal HDD was not displayed in the boot priority and was not in the boot list, therefore I could not put it at a higher priority than the EHDD.

Starting the computer with the externall HDD works fine, it's just that it's a pain having to disconnect and connect it all the time.

Thanks,
Lighty.

I created an internal local domain server that is named yourdomain com The external address for my website is also named yourdomain com At first there was a difficulty connecting the computers on the domain to the external yourdomain com addresses so I then removed a couple of computers from the Conflicts Internal Name and DNS External domain just to utilize for those types of addresses and it sometimes would connect and sometimes wouldn t I use bluehost as my mail and website host - Do I need to create DNS Forwards on the server - If Internal and External DNS Name Conflicts so what ip addresses do I use and where exactly do I need to place it - Do I need to reload the server with a different local domain name thank the external - Can I change the Domain Name without a reload I would like to be able to place all my computers on the network on the domain and still have access to email Is this possible and if so how Thanks for all your help It is much appreciated Thanks nbsp

A:Internal and External DNS Name Conflicts

1. Yes, as your websites are hosted externally you will need to setup forward and reverse lookups from your domain.

2. Not sure I understand the question? Place what where? The IP addresses you use will depend on the IP addresses already in use for your website.

3. As long as the domain name is registered to yourself/business this shouldn't be necessary but if your website is hosted by an external company you need to make sure the DNS records on the internet are correct. i.e. 'A' record for website points to website, 'MX' record points to your mail servers etc

4. No. Well as far as I'm aware on any windows machine, changing the domain name requires a reboot.

I'm currently in the market to purchase a DVD burner. I've got a desktop PC running Windows XP, 1.7Mhz processor, 512 ram, etc. So, it's pretty good, but not the newest. I also plan to purchase a laptop in the near future.

Any recommendations on whether I should save about $100 and get an internal drive or should I get an external that I can use on both PC's?

Also, any ideas how much slower it will take to burn a DVD, since I will be sending the information via FireWire rather than a direct cable inside the computer.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Also if you have any recommendations on burners, I'm open to ideas. Right now I'm looking pretty strongly at the TDK burners.

You may have better luck attaching your current drive to a working pc to salvage files you cherish

I have an E-machines T-3304 using the AMD Sempron Processor 3300+. The Hard Drive is 100Gb ATA. The OS is XP

I think the hard drive is about to fail, so I have bought an iomega external hard drive, Model #LDHD-UP 1 terabyte size and backed up in it.

My question is, should my HD fail, can I just substitute the external HD for it, and how is that done if it can be?

Thank you.

A:Can I sub an external HD for a failed Internal?

You can't just swap the drives. First, you will need to ensure the drive inside the external case is the same type (ie: IDE or SATA). Second, assuming it's the right type, you can use the disk tools from the HDD manufacturer (manufacturer of the actual HDD inside the enclosure, NOT Iomega) to clone your current drive onto the new drive.

Hey people,

So here's my issue, recently took out my laptop HDD and formatted it, NTFS format, and stored stuff on it. Now when I place that in an enclosure and want to use it as an external HDD drive, it doesnt pick up the device.

Through Diskpart I am able to give the drive a letter and access it, but when I "Safely" remove device, the Drive letters remain....

1St problem, Do I need to do anything special to make the Device a Plug and Play ?
2nd Question, am currently consulting google on the matter, HOW do I remove the Drive Letters that I assigned through Diskpart from "My Computer"

A:Make Internal HDD to External

Diskpart isn't the easiest way to do so, and I hope that didn't do anything to the drive. The easiest is to assign the drive a letter in Disk Management. But, to back up a bit, is it recognized in Disk Management, first.

A:internal or external cd/dvd-rom drive?

Doesn't really matter, need a little technical proficiency to put in an internal is all. External gives a little more flexibility on placement if there's a more convenient place than in the tower, but it also takes up a little bit of extra space.

hi how can i make a backup/ system image for my internal and external hard drives at the same time? thanks

A:backup internal/external

First you will need often a larger drive then you have for the OS and other drives internal as well as external. If you have one 500gb OS host drive, a second 500gb internal, and then two 500gb external drives you would likely need a 2tb drive to cover the size of any image created.

The program to handle this would like be Acronis True Image as one of the best paid for programs or one that will include multiple drives into one main image backup. Others like Paragon, Macrium's Reflect, the older Norton Ghost are some of the more popular programs.

With a few those either have free versions as well as paid for or like Paragon offer a free version. Paragon is a free open source program there. Also drive manufacturers like Western Digital will offer a free version of Acronis TI. Seagate also offers the rebranded Disk Wizard(Acronis under a different name) free as well for their customers.

I installed Windows 7 on my ASUS EEE PC 701. It runs great, but the only problem is space on the hard drive. The internal hard drive only has 4GB, and about 3.20GB of it was used to install Windows 7. I'd like to install programs like iTunes and Adobe Audition but one of those alone would probably exceed the amount of space I have left.

However, I do have an Western Digital 320GB external harddrive. How do I make it so I can switch between using the internal hard drive and the external one as the main storage for installing programs and such? I know its possible because I've seen many people ask about it, but nobody ever completely shows how to do it. They just vaguely explain how it works...I'd really appreciate detailed instructions.

Thanks in advance!

A:Can I use both internal HD and external HD as main?

I'm not sure how you'd go about it without problems. You would always have to have the external HD attached for Windows to work, at which point you're better off getting something suitable for that use from the beginning, i.e. a desktop PC, or a regular notebook with a proper HD. You can't just arbitrarily be switching from Programs residing in the Eee PC's internal drive and an external drive.

My 2 cents .

What would be my connectivity problems?
What are my compatability considerations?
Is it possible even?

Though I would consider buying a new Internal HD if it is possible and eleviate compatability problems.

Internal, or External..?? failure it's happened to me once I never wanna loose everything again I have over songs and Lots of Photo's and video's I'm going to get one ASAP I wanted everyone's opinion I was thinkin to get an identical drive and just make exact copy of my current drive and then have a program always do that so if I get a failure I'm ok cuz I can just swap them out But then I started thinkin that maybe I want an external If I'm going out going to a freinds house or whatever I was thinkin maybe a Seagate External or Maybe those cool My Passport ones whatever is best and mid priced So what does everyone think what would be my best bet for best Drive safest and overall a good price ratio I know external's sometimes die faster than internal cuz always getting moved and what not or from heat in that tiny enclosure so I'm just not sure Peoples Opinion's are very much wanted Let me know what you think I should do I'm only using around GB now maybe a lil more but I plan to add to that Thanks Cheers

A:Back-Up HDD. Internal, or External..??

I'm always lookin for a good deal. I'm thinkin external because I can have portable 500GB.. that would be great.. I know that Firewire and eSATA are both much faster than USB2.0 but when it's something your only using to Back-up Data to.. and not something I'll be using on a daily basis, I'm thinkin that the speed is not all that much of importance.. yes I could get a external that has USB and eSATA both.. but they cost a good $40 or more just for having the eSATA. and like I said, it's nice but not all that important.. the cheapest one I could find for a 500GB external HD by seagate was like 119.00 USD.. until I found this.

Seagate 500GB FreeAgent USB 2.0 7200RPM External Hard Drive - ST305004FDA1E1-RK - Buy.com

I'm thinkin I'll get that, Does not have eSATA or anything special. but it's cheap, and just what I need. How does this look. thats a GREAT deal and pretty cheap for 500GB and even better has a 5 yr warranty. what ya guys think?

Edit* Or something like a WD MyBook, I'd get a my passport but they only go to 320. The Mybook looks like it has better cooling, as the Seagate doesn't have any vents at all from what I can see.. what do you guys think.??

If not, shouldn't she be able to install it as slave into another computer and boot up and retrieve the files?

A:Internal HD connect as in external

You can get an external enclosure, put the drive in there and then connect it to the laptop with a USB cable. Find out if it's an IDE or SATA drive. Here's an example of an IDE enclosure http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817193019 and a SATA enclosure http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817201025. There are also a few that will handle both IDE and SATA.

She could also put it in another desktop (one that will hold more than one hard drive) as a slave drive.

If she gets an access denied error, take ownership of the files or folders http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308421.

Hi there! I hope I'm in the right forum.
Here's my issue.

We're running Windows 2003 R2 using native Windows DNS

I need to create a DNS entry that will allow our internal users to connect to an external IP. There is no FQDN, just an IP.

I tried a CNAME entry but it would not resolve, I also tried an A record but again it would not work.

I can access the external site by plugging in the IP into a browser but for our users here that will not cut it. They need a user friendly name they can remember that resolves to the external IP

Any help?

TIA,
Dave

How can i get the line-in (External mic) as a separate option?

Help me plssss
Thanks in Advance

A:Internal and External Microphone

You need the Microphone mode. The microphone mode provides 5VDC on the "ring" connection, which is required by a "computer" microphone. If you use or set the jack mode to "Line" the "ring" connector will change from 5VDC to a signal in connection and a "computer" microphone will not work.

Does an external HDD have any benefits over an extra internal HDD for backing up data?

I think if the truth be known that an internal HDD providing it's not a partition of the primary HDD would be the best but is this correct?

I was thinking about having as well as my 500GB HDD that has a partition which is also being used for automatic back ups another 80GB HDD for just copying and pasting the folders I want to back up, but using Bitlocker to protect. As well as that I was going to buy another 500GB HDD which will be used for automatic back ups as well.

So in total I have 2 locations on 2 separate drives for Norton Ghost to use for automatic back ups and an other separate HDD for just copying folders to which has been encrypted using BitLocker.

Will this be alright or should I add either another internal HDD or an external HDD?

A:External Vs Internal HDD for back up?

Well, I've always recommended external HDDs, so that the data will still be protected in the event that heat or motherboard issues mess up more than one internal HDD.

Hello,
I have a dell 910 notebook and the ssd has failed.
I would like to know if I can load windows on a external hdd and run the notebook from that
Thank you in advance

A:Using a external hdd insted of internal ssd

Leon478 welcome to SF,
Absolutely you can. I might recommend a new SSD though and a back up drive. On my work lappy I run a 256gb SSD and then a 1TB usb 3.0 HDD external. Another idea would be to get a large SD card and boot from it to a internal spinner. Lots of options but your idea is correct but you will need to change the boot order in your bios.

would an internal SSD made into an external USB drive be just as fast or slower?

A:Internal SSD made into USB external

The usb bus would severely limit the speed between the computer and the drive.

Hello, I recently formated my computer and now I'm having a recording problem. I'm a DJ and use the mic input to record my mixes.

The problem is, that when recording both the "plugged in/external"mic and internal mic input sound. This causes distortion and I only want to use the plugged in mic, not the internal mic

I have tried to work the problem myself but the only way to stop the internal mic working is to mute the mic, but this makes it that my plugged in microphone is no longer working as well.

I'm not sure if it matters but I'm using Windows 7 65 bit ultimate. And I use a Sony Vaio Laptop. The sound card is RealTech High Definition.

Thank you for your help,
Beni

A:Can't turn internal mic off, and keep external mic/plugged in mic on

I think you may need to get the Sony manual for your laptop.

It should tell you how to turn just the onboard off.

It appears Windows just recognizes one but two mics are live thus the distortion from both.
My guess is that a third party software controls the internal mic on/off as they usually do with the web camera.

I'm planning on buying a new hard drive to use as a backup drive. What are the pros and cons of internal and external drives (assume price is not an issue)

My internal dvd writer is shown in windows explorer but when I right c lick on it, Windows Explorer becomes "not responding". I have trawled the internet most of the day and tried every conceivable fix and dignosic but with no improvement. About the only one that I am not sure about is selecting and reinstalling the chipset drivers. This all started when I tried to burn some windows recovery DVDs. just as the writing began, the DVD was ejected with the message "DVD write failed! error: 0xcaa0301 Idiskformat2data ->write failed!" I then worked through every fix suggestion only to find Windows Explorer nor responding as above.

I suppose this is more of a question answer than an actual real-time issue Mneighbor has a year old -> External Internal USB using Data Transfer HP desktop and his computer fails to get past the Windows XP loading screen I broke the news to him that he can replace the hdd os or he can just be practical and upgrade to a brand new system I tried to transfer his files off Data Transfer using Internal -> External USB by adapting his IDE drive to USB with a data transfer adapter I was trying to transfer the information to his windows vista laptop The USB installation quot Chime quot sound kept going off and on as if I was unplugging and replugging the port but it would not show up in 'My Computer' with the exception of showing up for a split second The drive never lost power while in it's original Data Transfer using Internal -> External USB tower so I doubt that the drive disconnecting is due to power issues My question is this Did windows vista pose to be problematic with external hard drives My next plan is to try with one of my Windows laptops to see if I can bring the files over to my computer so that I can create discs for my neighbor Is this worth trying at all Any input would be appreciated Thank you

A:Data Transfer using Internal -> External USB

Are you using an adapter like this ?

Are you getting enough power to the old HD ?

Are the USB ports on the receiving computer USB 1.1 or 2.0 ?

What happens if you just type in the command instead of running the batch?

I know in command prompt there can be issues with the code page. But I don't know enough about it to advise you. Perhaps another poster will have more specifics.

I work for a company that uses multiple servers both internally and externally We have some servers on-site that are occasionally moved to off-site collocation servers in order to test fail-over protocols However when the servers are moved the IP addresses change and our NOC team updates the DNS records accordingly We have a VPN setup in order External to Windows Routing instead IPs IPs 8 of Internal to force our company computers to continue to connect to the internal servers while our customers will begin connecting to the servers on collocation Both the internal IP and external IP are provided when running an nslookup on the domains We have two desktops and one laptop running Windows and all of them are affected by the following issue Once we move the servers off-site the Windows computers will only use the external IP xxx xxx xxx Windows 8 Routing to External IPs instead of Internal IPs instead of the -hop internal IP NSLOOKUP command will return the following C Users username gt nslookup domain com Server dns-cluster domain com Address Name domain com Addresses xxx xxx xxx But attempting to connect to the domain via browser ping or more importantly one of our utilities we are forced to the second IP which is an external IP However we do not allow logins from the external IP for our utilities The only workaround has been to setup about hosts entries for the various servers This is fine except the IP addresses do change on occasion and it's a bit annoying having to update the hosts entries on the computers especially because one of them is off-site Additionally using another adapter causes the same issue so it's not specifically an issue with the adapter Windows XP Vista and do not appear to have this problem I hope someone has an idea as to what's causing this Thanks

Hey guys, I'm new to ten forums but I've been on seven forums for a while but upgraded.
Here is my issue
I want to mirror one of my internal HDDs to my external HDD. Then I want to run my computer off of the external HDD so I can RAID my only two internal HDDs. Then transfer everything from the external HDD back onto the two RAIDed internal HDDs.
I've already looked at the storage spaces in the control panel and I don't see any way to successfully mirror the two drives without erasing all the data on the internal drive.
I'm not concerned about space; I have two 1TB internals and one 1TB external.
Any help will be great, Thanks.

Is there going to be much of a difference in open/save time between an internal HDD(SATA, i believe) and an external HDD with a firewire 400 hookup? I am looking into adding a HDD without installing internally. I plan to use 64 bit XP for some software reasons and do not want to use USB because of the Apperent driver issues that 64 bit has had. I am totally aware that USB may be faster, but i am not looking forward to finding a compatible driver( if one exists). Does anyone have any other suggestions? It would be greatly appreciated. TIA

I just looked and the USB and Firewire ports look to be on the MOBO, not in the section of PCI slots

Hello!

I just recently bought a WD Green 1TB Hard Drive.

I was wondering if there is anything I need to do to start moving files onto it, or is it just a plug and play situation?

Thank you!

A:Do I need to format a brand new internal HD for external use?

Hi as far as I know it should be plug and pay so's to speak,
Although it's best to I believe format it anyway to remove anything that might be on it,
Also to make sure it's NTFS instead of FAT32

Try this, make a new folder on your external. Put the old folder in the new, then try to transfer. Hope it works, good luck..

There are many knowledgable people on these forums and I hope someone can help me out.

Where can I buy a kit that will convert an internal Plextor Plexwriter 8220 scsi2 cd-rw to a portable external version. I am trying to find one with a fan and power supply built in. I would like to find a new one under $30 or a reputable site that offers used ones. Any links to prospective sites or any info would be most appreciated.

Are there any stumbling blocks/drawbacks to doing this type of conversion that I should know about?

Saw this devive in a catalog...you take any hard drive and
this device converts it to a portable that connects via USB. Anyone used or heard anything about this device? Do not remember catalog name(it's at work).I have a spare 6 gig I would love to use for this device.

A:Converting internal drive to external?

I've seen similar housings that work with parallel ports. Basically it is an enclosure with a power supply and a converter board - converts parallel (USB in this case) to IDE. You have to install drivers on your system to make it work. USB won't work in DOS or Windows NT, but if you are using it for Windows 9x/ME/2000 that won't matter.

As with all things, you should make sure it is from a reputable company and has a decent warranty.

The concept is solid, there is no reason to expect trouble. But cheap parts can cause trouble with anything...

Appreciate some assistance.

Have a Toshiba Tecra 520CDT with a 4GB internal HD, and would like to get an external Travelstar 8E (8GB) PCMCIA (Slot Type II)hard drive.

Q#: Is it possible to use an external hard drive (such as the one mentioned above), and the laptop's internal 4GB at the same time, or can you only use one or the other?

---

A:Using External and Internal Hard Drives

You can use both at the same time....just sees it as another drive.
