I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

If one has a NIC with 'jumbo frame' capability, how important is it to pick a router having this capability on its gigabit WAN? I've no interest in LAN, as I will never have more than one PC, so this question is entirely focused on gigabit WAN and jumbo frames. Thanks.

A:Routers & 'jumbo frame'

More than likely you would not be able to see a difference in Jumbo frames on a local LAN/WAN vs. standard packet encapsulation. Unless you are moving a crazy amount of data back & forth between a fileserver, NAS device, your PC & the WAN connection. However, to utilize a jumbo frame encapsulation you would need a router or a switch that supports it.

Here is a few links to learn more about Jumbo Frames & Packet Encapsulation:

A:Wi-Fi stopped working now only works wired

Have you checked under your Device Manager to see if the WiFi was disabled for some reason? Does your Dell have a physical WiFi button, and is it turned on? You could also go to the Dell website and download the WiFi device drivers for your specific laptop. Un-install the WiFi drivers, reboot and then re-install them.

Q: Routers

When I had Time Warner Cable Internet installed, the router I have now came with it. I had Verizon before, and a router came with it What if I decided to buy another router? Like something from Netgear or where ever Would I still have to pay a fee to the provider I was using at the time.Would it be the same cost as if I was still using their router?

A:Routers

circusboy01 said:

That question you should be asking your provider.

I know we would have had to pay an extra fee to get a box with Wireless. But since we already had Wireless in-home, there was no need in even thinking about paying an extra monthly fee for it.

However if you return the device to the provider. I don't see how they can continue charging extra, if that is what they are doing. Most providers (I'm assuming here because that has been my experience) consider the modem as a free device, for buying their service. If that is the case, there is no extra fee.

Here again since I have the most weird problem ever which I have never seen nor heard of before. I recently upgraded the OS on a friends computer, from Vista to 7. However now I can't seem to get the onboard ethernet adapter to work, it can't be seen in device manager nor anywhere else. I have tried to reset the bios (by removing the cmos battery) and I have also checked that the network adapter is set to 'Enabled'. Also, when I connect the cable to the ethernet port no lights go on, it doesn't give any sort of hope what so ever. The cable is ok, the "modem" is ok, and everything else seems to be in order and yet it doesn't work.

Computer in question:
HP Pavilion 6530sc
Non-default GPU and added 1Gb RAM

A:Solved: Computer doesn't recognize the network adapter

Whenever you install a new OS, always take note of the model of core system hardware like GPU, chipset, and ethernet/wifi (there are a few others that aren't as important, but nice to have updated) since those are critical to your computers core functionality.

However, a quick google search of your model yielded me with your PC's system specs. Your PC contains a Realtek RTL8201N ethernet adapter. So far I am unable to find a driver from Realtek itself and the HP driver is not Realtek, but instead nVidia nForce.

So after a bit of searching, I came across this: it seems to me that you have an old chipset from nVidia. I am not completely sure, but I think you have an ION chipset. Try installing this ION chipset driver (64 bit) ==OR== this ION chipset driver (32 bit) and tell me if it works. It should include the necessary component drivers and if it works, it means you have an ION chipset like I suspected.

Here are the specifications for your PC BTW.

My living arrangement has it so that my computer is about 25 yards away from the router. I have high speed internet, and if I'm on a laptop right next to the router, I can easily get 30 mb/s. But when I'm at my computer which is 25 yards away, I get speeds of about 8 mb/s or less (often 1 - 2 mb/s).

The router and wireless adapter that I have both seem to be top tier, but I'm not sure:
http://amzn.to/1pcUvtF
http://amzn.to/1oiLkbI

My question is, are there any *significantly* better options than the ones I just linked, as far as signal distance? Or is the current technology in routers and wireless adapters limited?

A:The max range of wireless routers and adapters

To directly answer your question: No.

What should help you out: Drop it to 2.4Ghz rather than 5. That will get you increased range, and through that at a fixed range - faster speeds. You'll lose the ability to run 802.11ac and have to fall back to 802.11n, but you'll be happier since you weren't getting ac speeds anyway.

Yes, it stands true if you hook up wirelessly. Just make sure the router is secure. Also, Windows and OS X have a built in secondary FireWall.

Hey AttTio. Is your diagram correct?. I see the connection from the switch going to one pc that's wired and another that is connected wirelessly. I have this dell laptop, XPS M1330 that I bought new the ship date was 01/08/2008. I have been wanting to upgrade to a SSD but I don't know what kind of connector the system board has on it. It is some of SATA connector but it has separate power connector. I am hoping someone can tell me what type of connector this is and do they make a SSD with this type of connector.

You can view the photo I took of the drive here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/[email protected]/13177305443/

Those connectors are SATA and SATA power (the longer one is SATA power). No idea how it works on a laptop though, I think the connectors just are fixed in place where the old HDD was. Before buying an SSD though, make sure it fits in the old space and you should be good, correct me if I'm wrong on any of this though.

Hello all I have been playing around with my home network of late and noticed some surprising at least as far as I m concerned results For work I require a hardware VPN so I was using in Change routers bandwidth different with a Sonicwall TZ W as my firewall and a asus rt-n u as a access point because the TZ s wireless is pants With this my peak download rate was Mbps and upload Mbps I then bought a linksys E and flashed it with DD-WRT and used that instead of the Sonicwall as soon as I plugged it in I noticed a Mbps increase in my download rate Upload increase was neglible if any I then decided I wanted to change from having a firewall and AP to a all in one solution since there was no real need to have both so I bought a Asus RT-N U flashed it with DD-WRT Now this router is amazing Change in bandwidth with different routers and I can t rate it enough with DD-WRT it is off the charts Much to my surprise I now had a peak bandwidth of Mbps down and Mbps up which is what my ISP originally quoted me when I got the line The results from the RT-N U you could say is not surprising with it being a far superior router but the E vs a TZ I m confused somebody please enlighten me Oh and the setup on E and the Asus is Change in bandwidth with different routers identical Alastair nbsp

A:Change in bandwidth with different routers

My gut reaction is - - cudos to DD-WRT.
There are three factors for routers (especially when they get real busy):
clock speed of the processor
memory
the code/firmware

It is well known that DD-WRT is very good (read tight/small) and that allows the hardware (cpu + memory) to perform at its best.

So I guess you are trying to stream media and such. Depending on the version of OS you are running you may have to give rights for the xbox to talk over network. I have two networks set up in my home .I have all wired computers hooked up to router A that is router / modem combo . All wireless and other wired computers hooked up to router B

I have two subnet mask. Some one was saying if I use same subnet mask on both routers , I would have problems.Should I be using the same subnet mask? What is subnet mask ? When should I use two subnet mask ? I thought every network needs it's own subnet mask? Or data would not know to be sent to router A.

Also router B does not need to know the gateway or DNS of the ISP , all it neesds to know is the IP address of router A.

I read that DHCP should be disabled on router B . I do not know why that is the case.

A:Should two routers use the same subnet mask?

Yes, you need the same MASK - - but there are bigger issues than the mask itself.

Q.a) Also router B does not need to know the gateway or DNS of the ISP , all it needs to know is the IP address of router A.

Q.b) I read that DHCP should be disabled on router B . I do not know why that is the case.Click to expand...

If you wire from A(lan slot) --->(lan slot)B (ie leave the B wan port empty, then you will use B as a switch, not a router - - very effective and 99% of the time, the solution you were after in the first place. If B has Wifi, that is still operational !!.

We disable DHCP in the B router to make Q.a true. Router A's DHCP will control all devices attached to either A or B.

Now to assist in allowing B to be configured while attached this way, it needs an IP address on the same subnet as A and A needs to never allow DHCP to handout B's IP address.
SO:

on A, set the DHCP range from 2-100 (that's more than reasonable)
on B set its IP address static to 254 (if A is x.y.z.1 then B is x.y.z.254)
[edit]
If B has WiFI, then you can modify those settings with the browser
http://x.y.z.254 and enter the user/pwd for router B
[/edit]

btw: if you wire A(lan)--->(wan)B, then B will enable NAT and devices on A will not be able to access devices on B.

A:Wired and Wireless networking at home

For multiple routers, only the router connected to the modem has a wire in the WAN slot. For all others, connect to any LAN slot and leave the WAN slot empty.

Only the first router should have DHCP active.

All devices regardless of the connection type (wired vs wifi) or the device to which they connect (RouterA, RouterB, Switch1) will then have DHCP addresses on the subnet of routerA.

The 192.168.2.3 static address will be immaterial but can still be accesses to control WiFi setups.

Suggest one wifi router be set to channel X and the other to any other channel than X.

Hi all,

So I'm upgrading my motherboard from an ASRock which has caused me nothing but problems since I got it to a MSI. They both are intel socket motherboards. My question is, how do I go about doing this? I would prefer to keep my files from my prior build but I have read that it is necessary that I reinstall my OS before I install my motherboard. I realize I can backup my PC's files and then reinstall them once I've installed the new motherboard but are there things that I should be mindful about while working on this process?

I have a lot of specific questions about this process. So maybe a step by step instruction or something like that would be a good place to start and I can see if I have questions from there.

Thanks

Help please?

I have recently moved to a rented property and have had fibre broadband installed. The hub is next to the modem which had to be placed at the main telecom entry point to the house. This means that the hub and modem are in the sitting room. I want to have my printer upstairs but do not wish to run a cable all the way from the hub to the printer. How many pc's are being used and how do they connect, wired or wirelessly?
Is this printer a network printer (has an Ethernet jack)?
Are these hubs or are they switches?

Hi everybody been searching the forum but didn t find a solution for my situation guess it s not very common Where routers, connection wireless two Two one LANs, I recently moved there s a shared connection What I got is a wireless LAN and an ethernet cable both coming from a router I do not have access to this router What I need is to create another wireless network to connect all my stuff smartphone a Two routers, two wireless LANs, one connection tablet a WDTV windows and ubuntu laptops without having to share the internal traffic with other people but still going out to the internet via the only shared connection I already had a Netgear JNR router so what I did is connect the ethernet cable to it and create a new wireless network The router changed its IP address to to avoid clashes DHCP is still active I tried connetting stuff and everything works mighty fine Everything Two routers, two wireless LANs, one connection except one windows laptop This one laptop Windows enterprise sees everything in the network but can t reach the outside world I tried disabling DHCP but that only worsened the things because my android devices cuoldn t get Two routers, two wireless LANs, one connection an IP address anymore To make everything even worse the non working laptop is the one I use for my job so I will connect using a VPN Everything works fine if I connect to the pre-exixtent wireless LAN so I don t really want to change a lot of things Does anybody have any suggestions to make this laptop able to run free on the internet Thanks a lot in advance nbsp

A:Two routers, two wireless LANs, one connection

Just to verify, you now have a layout like

Code:

ISP==router#1----Netgear JNR3210(10.0.0.1)- - -wired & wifi
|
+--- wired & wifi

* you have NO control over router#1 and it does NOT have an address of 10.0.0.1

Yes DHCP is necessary on BOTH routers.

? all systems connected to 10.0.0.1 have Internet access?
ie the 2 smartphone, a tablet, a WDTV, 2 windows and 1 ubuntu laptops

EXCEPT the Win/7 and the non working laptop is the one I use for my job, so I will connect using a VPN.

Sorry, VPN will never work. The VNP needs port forwarding from router#1 which you do not have control.

Then its not an issue with you specifically.

Take this as I'm thinking out loud as I don't know for sure. The virus would need to overwrite the router's firmware and be specific to each model they infect. A BIOS or Firmware virus would be a non-productive effort in creating them.

Ok so I have a Cisco Linksys E Wireless router Over the past month I have been experiencing severe internet speed loss due to troubles with the router and the temporary fix for it untill now was rebooting it I have recently found out that the problem causing this was heat Yes HEAT The router kept getting too hot So what I did for now is I made a prop decreased wireless Internet for routers for fixing Suggestion speed for it to raise it up off of the table a little bit then took a little space heater set to Cool and stuck it in front of it Now I believe I have fixed the problem because I have not experienced any more bitrate loss Suggestion for fixing decreased Internet speed for wireless routers yet I am planning on rigging a computer fan to it because this small space-fan is proving to be too powerful to be an efficient fix it s blowing cold air rather than warmer air like you see with computers and consoles The only problem is it s my parents router and I will have to figure something out that won t modify it at all Hope this helps anyone having the same problem nbsp

Hey guys, wondering if anyone can help me with an issue in having. I have a Netgear wireless router (can't remember model, CGD or CGN something I think) and I'd like to set up a wired connection, the PC is right next to the router/modem and I'd enjoy having the slightly better download speeds with wired however, just plugging in an ethernet cable does nothing (surprise surprise). When I first tried I got Error 651, by fixing up the drivers with a Vista one I got past that but now I'm getting Error 797, I'm stuck here, I have no idea what to do. Any help?

A:Can I use a Netgear router for a wired connection?

Try to access the routers setting page over the wireless, usually for netgear its 192.168.1.1 or 10.0.0.1, and log in using your user and password given to you. Some routers (especically Netgear) will disable ethernet ports unless you specify otherwise for whatever reason. Ususally there is a setting in the router control panel to enable them. Wish you luck

Hi all, Had a friend call me up saying he was having an issue with his internet connection. Having worked for his ISP I went round to have a look and carried out the following:

Windows 7 Professional
Onboard atheros ar8121/ar8113/ar8114 pci-e ethernet controller driver

disabled - reenabled nic
uninstalled and reinstalled nic drivers
netsh firewall reset
netsh winsock reset
netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt
changed cable
checked ports on router with another pc all ok
stop and start of DHCP client and DNS
started in safe mode and get same issue
ran Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware no issues found
Used static address information
System restore

constantly got 169 ip address so installed another NIC (Realtek) and then got network cable unplugged. Had them to reinstall windows and just got a call saying they were having the same issue so was wondering if anyone else had any suggestions of things to try.

Many thanks in advance.

A:Wired connection issue

Check in BIOS for NIC settings, check for BIOS update, swap out & try different router, try hooking up directly to the ISPs cable/dsl modem/router... Try a linux live bootable disk to see if issue still occurs. if all else fails low level format hdd then do reload. If it's a rootkit, sometimes doing a windows reload does NOT eliminate the rootkit. I use a utility called CBL data shredder to write 0's or 1's to an hdd. It can be downloaded here: http://www.cbltech.ca/data-shredder.html hope this helps!

A:Multiple routers 6

Starting from the modem;
isp = = modem --->(WAN port)ROUTER#1then to have ALL systems on one network, daisy chain from R#1 to the next but
ONLY connect (LAN)-->(LAN) between all the others. Router#1 will now control
al DHCP assignments - - even for any WiFi router in the chain.

This requires that ONLY R#1 have an active DHCP, so each of the others need
to be set to disable DHCP.

1) One-by-one, connect Router#x via wire to a system, use your browser to access the
router default address, login using the user/password for that router, and DISABLE DHCP.

2) Many routers come preconfigured for lan address 192.168.x.1 where x is 0,1, or 2

Every network can never have duplicate IP address and if allowed, will case network failures.

As you disable the DHCP, also set a new default LAN address 10.0.x.1
where X is 1,2,3,... N and use a new X for each one you've fixed.
Thus, if ever they are wired R1(lan)--(wan)R2---(wan)R3---(wan)R4)
the addresses would be 10.0.1.1-->10.0.2.1-->10.0.3.1-->10.0.4.1
(but you don't want that for routing table reasons)

3) also change the default password for each router.
If your system login password is abcdefg,
you might set the primary router#1 password to abcdefg#1
router#2 to abcdefg#2 and so on.

I wasn't able to connect through my wireless router to the internet on any of my wireless devices until I plugged in my wireless usb stick. I plugged it into one laptop, and now I can use both. Is there a kind of routers to receive Wi-Fi then share it with several computer? if yes, any recommendation? Thanks in advance!

A:Is there a kind of routers to receive Wi-Fi then share it with several computer?

let's confirm what you are asking . . .

Code:

isp--->someRouter .. . . wifi connection . . . to second router - -- shared connections
yes, that is possible. the second router acts as a bridge and wired systems can use it.

to use 2nd router with wifi to 'shared connections' you need another wifi router, eg

Code:
. . bridge router --wired-3rd router with wifi . . . shared systems

Hi I hope this is a good spot to cannot Two routers and access a printer networked come for an answer Thanks in advance for any help At my business we have a server connected to a cisco router I m unsure of the model but I ll find out if necessary The cisco router is not a wireless router but I wanted to have wireless access for Two routers and cannot access a networked printer my phone and tablet and my quot tech guy quot told me I can t replace the existing router but could hook up a wireless router to the cisco one So I ve hooked up a TPLink Router and it works great I have internet connection through it My issue is - I have a printer which I used to be able to access through the network from any computer on the network Now that my printer and computer are connected to the TPLink Router I cannot find my printer on the network from a computer which is not connected to the TPLink Router - my quot tech guy quot won t respond to help me I think I m unclear and maybe this will help Router -- gt Server other computers Printer amp Router Router -- gt Printer amp My computer My computer can access the server and Printer amp Printer Server can access Printer Server cannot access Printer Please Please help It s so inconvenient having to use only Printer for work related stuff nbsp

A:Two routers and cannot access a networked printer

the issue is the wiring. If you took the link from router#1 to the wan side on router #2,
then there is no means to access router#1 resources.

fix:
a) use your browser to access router#2 setup (I assume you know how, if not ask).
then disable the DHCP service in this router
also disable the remote management port 8080
save the changes.

b) now take the wire out of the wan slot on router#2 and move it to a lan slot, leaving
router#2 wan empty.

Router#2 will then operate as a switch but still retain the WiFi support. All devices connecting
to it will get IP addresses from router#1 and thus have access to all resources.

Dell Vostro laptop running XP with a Realtek network card connected to a peer to peer network (7 pcs) with a Netgear router providing internet . The laptop has 3 userids defined (one for the main user and two others that are used less than once a year). For some reason I can only enable the wired network connection from one of the IDs (and not the one for the main user). The other two show cable unplugged when try to enable the connection. (The one that does work shows cable unplugged momentarily on enable but then enables with a double click). Upgraded to latest Realtek driver but same result. Also if swap cable same result so it looks like a software issue. All 3 IDs work fine on wireless, but as location is some way from router wireless signal is low so this is not an ideal workaround. I have an ATI Radeon 9250 which is pci.
I'm looking to upgrade to a decent gpu.
I want to know if having a pci card necessarily means I only have a pci slot.
I have an Intel Celeron 2.4 GHz

I used PC wizard but didn't really come to any conclusion.
Under mainboard it says "Slot PCI : 32-bit [5.0v, 3.3v] - Empty"
Not really sure what this means.
I also see "Number of PCI Bus : 2"
Does this mean I could use two cards?
And also I see "Number of AGP connectors : 1"
Does this mean I have an AGP slot?

If I can upgrade, what might you recommend? I don't really play games, purely for game development.
If I'm stuck with pci cards, could I get anything that could significantly increase performance?

A:Two Linksys Cisco routers unable to communicate with server

this issue tat the server must be communicate to the both router at the same timeClick to expand...

hmm; as you express it, this is literally impossible.
There should only be one DHCP server on this lan. With the addresses you've provided, the server has only one connection to the router and thus it can literally read/write to one device at a time.

Code:

==== router#1
(128.1)
|
+ (128.08) Server
|
+ (128.100) router ===
I fear you are attempting to connect each router to an ISP and get twice the bandwidth;
usually it is wired like this

Code:

===router#1 ------ server ---- router#2 ===
the server would need two NIC cards, but this never works due to the routing tables.

Okay guys, I have a router that runs to my xbox through a wired connection. Im getting a new pc and need another connection running to it. The only problem is the ethernet cable would have to be around 40 feet long to reach to where my new pc is going. I am also moving my xbox to the same spot as the pc so i would need 2 40 foot long ethernet cables..should i get the 2 cables or can i set up a new router right beside where the pc and xbox will be if so how would i go about doing this.

A:Two routers...?

easy. If you have an extra router already, use it. Otherwise, by a switch.

The wiring is
router#1 (lan) -----------(lan) new box (lan) --- xbox + new pc

The swich makes this a plug-n-play install (ie nothing to do).

If the new box is a router, then

first disable the DHCP service in it
then leave the WAN slot empty when making the connections

I have a T1 backbone connected to a Linksys wireless 4 port N router running 2 hubs and 1 websmart POE switch. I need to bring in another network on the same T1 backbone, keeping it separated from my current network with it's own DHCP router. I'm thinking I need to go from the T1 to a hub uplink port, then out to the ethernet port on both routers. Keeping the current setting on #1 router 192.168.1.1 and assigning an IP to the #2 Linksys router 192.168.2.1. I'm not sure if this will work, but it seems right, right?

A:How do I connect T1 to two DHCP routers, setup two networks

Thanks Rick

Thanks for your input Rick.
Currently I do have the T1 in the WAN port of my Linksys wireless router. This is my network DHCP server and has been working great. We have a school moving into my church building and I'm trying to provide them with their own LAN and internet. I'm not going to spend the cash for VLAN stuff, not cost effective. So I guess I'll just have to give them a router with static IP routing and their IT guy will have to assign IP's to each of their machines. My Linksys router is managing about 20 user stations and 5/8 wireless each day. This leaves me about 20 IP avail for my network. I could easly manage the school's needs without another DHCP router, but I don't want them to see my shared folders on my network. The static solution is the only one I can think of. Plus I don't want to use up my IP's.

A:Graphics card issue (not solved by any other threads)

I suggest a clean reinstall of the OS and drivers from scratch. Clean out your PC, re-seat all the components and continue with a fresh install of OS, drivers, etc.

If that doesn't work, then it's an issue with your card or the PCI-E slot on the motherboard.

Hi,

Basically I live in a relatively big house, 2 Computers / 1 Console Downstairs and 3 Computers upstairs.

There is currently a Ethernet cable going upstairs into a computer, can I put that cable into another router and utilize it as a switch to then have 3 cables leading out of that router into the systems upstairs?

any information on this would be greatly appreciated I have been searching around google but nothing looks reliable to me, I have a fairly good knowledge on Hardware / Networking, but still studying.

thanks

A:Two routers on network

Put the cable to the upstairs computer into a SWITCH (not a router) and everything will be managed by the original router just fine

Hello TechSpot,

I am thinking of dual booting Linux Mint with my Windows 7 OS. I don't have a cd big enough for the installer, and I am thinking about buying a stack of CDs to use for booting. However, I don't know which CD type to buy. I will be using them also for Movie making, file storage, back up and etc..
Which one of these would work?

DVD R
DVD RW
DVD-RW
DVD-RAM

Thanks

A:What type of CD is good for installing Linux or other OS for dual boot?

They're DVD's, not CD's; though you can use them for burning a Linux ISO, it would be a waste of most of the capacity of a disk though. I'd choose DVD-R's.

You can always download Linux live creator and use that instead. You just need a spare 1GB USB memory stick/thumb drive.

Hello to start with here is a list.

Router 1 (wired from modem) : IP 192.168.1.1
Router 2 (wireless): IP 192.168.2.1

I am trying to get these two routers to see each other while keeping the IP Addresses, Router 1 is the main router, which I want to keep at 192.168.1.1 Router 2 is a wireless one which I also wanted to keep at 192.168.2.1

How do I get computers on the 192.168.2.1 to see the computers and shared files on the 192.168.1.1

Any help anyone can give, I would be most grateful, thank you

I will first apologize for How link routers? to two my noobness I m not familiar with networking at all I can setup a wireless router and that s about it So what I want to do is run a cable from a wireless router to another router How to link two routers? The other router How to link two routers? will basically act as a switch I don t need it to transmit a wireless signal What I did is ran the cable from the main router to the second one plugged it into the router not the WAN Internet port then ran a cable to my PC It worked for a second then stopped working The other computer floors up where the initial router is also stopped connecting to the internet I could ping google I would get packets received and sent but no webpages would come up So I unplugged the new router and just have a cable going from the main router to my PC which is working but I m looking to have another device linked up to the new router without having to run another ft cable I m sorry if this is jumbled mess Any help is greatly appreciated Thanks nbsp

A:How to link two routers?

the physical wiring would look like this

Code:

modem---(wan.side)router#1(lan.side)--- wired or wifi connected systems
|
+---(lan.side)[B]router#2[/B](lan.side) - - other systems
Note that router#2 wan slot is left empty.

Be sure to disable the DHCP service on router#2 and this will then leave router#1
as the master and in control of the whole network

Ok, so I have a DSL modem/router, and I was wondering if I would be able to use this router and connect another router to it with an ethernet cord that would be about 70 feet long, then connect another ethernet cord to the 2nd router and make a run of about 200ft to a PS3. It has been my understanding that Cat5e is rated for about 100 meters, which would be within this 270 or so ft that im trying to run this....a small diagram of what im wanting

Ethernet wire (200ft).................................................Ethernet wire (70-80ft)
------------------------------------------------------++++--------------------------------------------------{+++}
PS3.......................................................Router 2 ..........................................................Dsl Modem/router

Would this work with this kind of wiring, and if so, do I just connect the wires and tada? Or is there some technical stuff that I need to do?

A:Two routers

you are spot-on.

The sole trick is to first disable DHCP in router two
(connect system directly to it and have nothing else connected;
use your browser to access the config page of that router).

Then make the connections so that the WAN port of router#2 is left empty - -
Router#1 will be in control of all connections to either one AND you can
even have WiFi active on either OR both (suggest you use different channels if Both are active).

A:Connect all-in-one wired printer to wireless network

this can be done - - WITH CARE.

First issue is to understand what your LAN looks like and what the DHCP range setting is;

get a command prompt (start->run->cmd)
enter IPCONFIG /ALL
the Gateway address will be that of your router; eg 192.168.x.y
assuming you've not changed the default settings,
the X will be different for the make of your router, but typically it is 0 or 1.
the y is almost always 1, but I've seen a few at 254.

To get your A-I-O on that network (and to keep it there), you need to make sure that
the address of the printer [ the y number ]
is not within the router's DHCP range.
Again with bold assumptions, if the router is at 192.168.0.1, then the DHCP range must be from 2 to xyz. I've also seen it from 100-150, so we need to access the router configuration using your browser.

please follow-up with the make and model number of your router so I can tailor the instructions for you ....

When I plug in the laptop to the router with the ethernet cable I'm connected fine, but when it comes to connecting wirelessly it says that my connection is unidentified and 'Local Only'.

Probably not enough information but not sure what else to say about it!

I wanted to know if its possible to share a printer on two different routers with different isps.

One router is a 2wire dsl router, which the printer is connected to now by wireless.

the other router is a linksys router connected to cable internet.

2wire router is current set to 192.168.0.1 addresses

linksys is connected to 192.168.1.1 - addresses.

Do i have to bridge the routers together via ethernet cable?

and if so will i still be able to keep each isp separate on each router?

A:Possible to share printer on two routers with different ISPs?

the issue to be solved is the shared printer can only be on ONE subnet and still be shared.
192.168.0.1 has the printer now and it can be shared by all systems attached to that network.

the 192.168.1.1 subnet can't share anything (files or printers) with systems on 192.168.0.1

Why the two networks? Joining the routers can be done, but you will need to drop one ISP.

Hello I have what I consider a very basic understanding of networking I work for an IT solutions provider and a restaurant chain which we support needs to fix a PCI compliance issue The network at the location was put in place a year ago with little documentation My goal is to move a DVR device for CCTV system away from the PoS machine because the DVR requires a port open which is not good for PCI compliance if both are behind same router I apologize for ignorance or lack of any details you might need to help me if there s some info I need to dig up I d be happy + to How modem routers multiple use bridged to find it I m in a rough spot trying to fix this This is how they are set up They How to use bridged modem + multiple routers have a bridged modem which is the first thing that the DSL line comes into My impression is that the proper way to use multiple routers with a bridged modem is to have a quot main router quot which will be the director if you will All the other routers should then plug into that main router as opposed to having multiple routers plugged into a bridged modem I ve confirmed that for whatever reason TWO Linksys Firewall Routers are plugged into this bridged modem which is a Netopia Again I apologize but I don t have the model numbers This brings me to my first couple of questions If two routers are plugged into the same bridged modem how would they behave Wouldn t they be fighting for control to be the quot main router quot Is it possible to set up two routers to connect to the same modem if some advanced configuration is made I actually would like to AVOID using a main router with the other routers connected to that if possible One of the routers has desktop PC and a Point of Sale system connected to it Router A if you will the other has some IP phones connected to it Router B Router B always times out when I try to access the console and I ve been told that in order to fix that I need to reset the router The problem is I can t afford to lose all those settings because I don t know how the company who installed IP phones configured that one The reason I mention this is to further stress that I don t want to have to reconfigure the existing routers However even though it times out when I try to access console it will assign me an IP properly I don t know what that really means I made sure to double check the gateway IP for that router is correctly typed into web browser At the moment the routers seem to be somehow working fine even though they are both plugged into a single bridged modem What I would like to do is add a third router that will only have the DVR device plugged into it My guess is that since Router B does have connectivity it gives me an IP and I can connect to internet when plugged into it I should set up this third router Router C plugged into router B and go ahead to configure Router C however is necessary for the DVR to function correct Give Router C a different gateway than the others forward the port that the DVR needs etc Is this a viable solution Some of my concern is that I m getting mixed messages from AT amp T technicians I have talked to Supposedly when there are routers connected to a bridge at least one of them need to have the PPPoE Username Password johndoe att net entered on it In a situation like this does router A and B BOTH need to have PPPoE user pass entered What about Router C Since router C is plugged into router B does that eliminate the need to enter PPPoE info Is it possible to only use the routers in static mode as opposed to PPPoE with user pass For example I just enter the primary and secondary DNS which the ISP uses give all the devices a WAN IP using the block of fixed IPs the ISP gives us Will that eliminate the need to use PPPoE mode with user pass And finally my last question would be In getting this DVR set up on Router C should I just go ahead to connect it to Router B and try using Router C in static mode with all the right numbers or go ahead to use the... A:How to use bridged modem + multiple routers

One thing I noticed from reading your post was that the problem you are trying to solve (not having the port opened to the DVR on the same network as the PoS) would not be solved by placing router C behind router B. You would still have to open the port on router B to allow it to pass to router C. Wouldn't this be the same as opening the port in router B to allow it to pass to the DVR (if the DVR was connected to router B)?

As far as the issues with AT&T, you can only program the IP addresses that they assign to you in the routers. They should be able to tell you how many IP addresses are assigned to your customer. If you have a router behind another router, only the one connected to the modem would have an IP address from the ISP.

Hello.

My title is a somewhat simplified version of my question, I will try to go a little more into detail.

I just bought a new router, Cisco E-3000. I want to bridge this with the old router, a 3com router.

Problem is, the old router is not mine. And I'm not allowed to remove the old network.

What I would like to do:
Set the new router up as primary router. Set the old router up as secondary. Keep the old security settings on the old router so that everything remains the same for the other users.(They don't want a password for some odd reason).

What is the point of all this?
I want my router to be on a different subnet, with better security and QoS. This way, my network stays better protected, meanwhile the other users will not even notice things have changed.

Would this be possible?

A:Bridging two routers of different brand

use the following layout

modem==firstRouter(lan)------(wan)newRouter----your systems

any request(s) from your systems will flow out to the Internet and back to you correctly,
but nothing attached to the firstRouter will be able to access the newRouter or beyond,
as firstRouter keeps its default route to be its Wan Side connection, not the port to the newRouter.

The newRouter(wan) side will take its address from the firstRouter.

You set the newRouter IP address to what you want and let its DHCP make assignments for your systems. The three common addresses for private LANs are

192.168.x.x
172.16.x.x
10.x.y.z
If the firstRouter is on say (#1), then set yours to 2 or 3 - - this makes it even more interesting for the upstream systems

one consequence: the new router will be isolated and thus no port forwarding will be possible,
reason: it would be required to port forward on BOTH routers. This may impact gaming or any 'servers' on your systems.

ok here goes first post on any forum ever ! i have to try to get two routers linked at my cabin. the lodge has wireless but it doesnt quite get to my cabin ,i need to use my netgear router/ or buy one that i can link to the linksys router in lodge for two reasons . 1 is to get the net in the cabin but more important to be able to hook up an AT&T microcell for cell phone service ,,the micro cell ican do already it works great , if you have a router to hook up to .. any ideas ? or questions

A:Linking two routers

I assume you want a wireless connection between the two routers and then to allow
systems to wifi connect to either (or both with multiple systems).

The normal practice is to use an Access Point(A/P) for the second router, as it has the feature
you need (using a Bridge Connection) and which is missing in most routers
(typically restricted to Infrastructure Mode; if you find a router which has that feature, then you can use it as well)

The setup looks like
Code:
ISP==YourConnection--->PrimaryRouter - - - Access Point
The Primary and the A/P can use the same SSID and passphrase, but separating the channels (1 vs 11) will reduce the interference.

Now you're down to getting ISP==YourConnection--> to work.
Besides the Cell phone data plan charges (which can be exorbitant), the issue becomes
YourConnection--->PrimaryRouter.

Try using the Cell phone for a single system connection to determine the requirements for dialing the connection - -
if it's easy enough, you may be able to use YourConnection--->PrimaryRouter
otherwise, you may need to put one system in the link like
YourConnection--->system#1-->PrimaryRouterwhich requires Internet Connection Sharing on system#1 (and that system must be active for all systems on the Primary or A/P to get any service).

SO. Where does that leave you?

A:Are my settings safe for linked 2wire & netgear routers?

I think you'd be better setting up your AT&T router as a switch, and then running your Netgear router as your main router.

DHCP should be setup on the Netgear router, and then that used to assign IP addresses to your networked devices.

Your AT&T one should have wireless disabled, DHCP disabled, and be assigned a static IP address. You can then use a cat 5 ethernet cable to connect the two routers.

Most of all, I would be setting up the AT&T as a DMZ, because you want the extra security it provides by isolating the internet from your private network (Netgear router).

In your situation you want the AT&T router to act purely as a switch, and nothing more. Your Netgear router can handle everything else. You also need to be aware that setting up a DMZ is more for public network devices, e.g. for webservers, so you can place them in the "public" area for net access, and hide your private network (Netgear in your case) away from it. You do not want to be connecting any devices to your AT&T router if it has DMZ enabled.

Here is a good, brief read on what DMZ is.

In a nutshell, I have a dell inspiron laptop that will say connected to a signal, but the browser will only say web page not found. At first I thought it was a browser issue, but then found it connects just fine with a hard line setup via a lan cable from the router. I have ran scans with malwarebytes, spyware doctor, avast, kaspersky internet security, and ad-aware externally finding a few infections. I also have uninstalled the wireless driver, and reinstalled from a fresh driver download from dell. Still says 'connected' on the wireless, but the browser says 'cannot find web page'. My wireless network is working fine as I have 4 computers hooked up wireless and working fine. I also have tested the laptop on surrounding signals to be sure it wasnt just something about my network the laptop didnt like. same results all around.
Any ideas what to try next?

A:Wired LAN connects, but not wireless

let's get some documentation of the configuration.

Connect via Ethernet and then attempt to also connect the WiFi (ie both at the same time).

Now get a Command Promt (Start->Run) and then enter ipconfig /all >myTCP.txt

Attach myTCP.txt to your follow-up and describe the OS and Version of your system.

Has the WiFi EVER connected to your router?
Have you used your system at a hotspot (assuming a laptop)?

A:Need help to setup home network with multiple Access Points or Routers

With Ethernet wiring available you have some nice choices;
use wires to access remote locations
and place wireless in the room(s) needed
Likely you can just wire to each floor and the garage and then let the wireless be accessed from those locations.

The Modem==>#1Router can control all the DHCP assignments and assuming that you only need four remote locations, you can use a 4-port router. If you need more than four, you will need a Switch, eg
Code:
modem==router---switch-- four connections
|
+---- three more connections
Each port from the router is wired to an Access Point or a WiFi router (doesn't matter so use whatever you have). The trick is
disable the dhcp in each Wifi device
attached the ethernet from #1Router to any LAN slot on the WiFi (leaving its Wan slot empty)
This will place all the WiFi on the same subnet as #1 router and sharing et al works across the board

WiFi setups:
start with just one to get the setup running and then you can use that as a template to
config the others. When performing this task, ALWAYS connect a pc to the Wifi device with a cable!

a) change the SSID to something unique to you but not obviously name, address ,,, (
you could add a suffix to it to identify one from the other

b) set a unique channel on each WiFi router to reduce interferrence.
(if you're using a DSL service, then make sure all phones in the house have a new filter attached)

c) enable encryption (WPA2 or WPA in that order) and set the passphrase (can be the same for all wifi devices)

d) for heaven's sake, change the admin password and save it.
(this will disconnect your PC from the device being configure so don't be shocked)

disconnect from the Wifi device and attempt a wireless connection.
Once this works, you can repeat for each of the others.

This is the strangest error I have EVER seen in XP. I find no mention of this phenomenon anywhere on the web so perhaps I am the first? I surely hope not.

I have a Dell laptop with an integrated keyboard (i.e. built-in). Suddenly, and with no good reason, today my keyboard is acting strangely. Some letters I have to hit 3 times before they type. Others twice. And yet others behave as normal. The correct letter will eventually appear but my Lord no one should have to hit any character on the keyboard more than once.

I need this fixed ASAP because I am taking this PC out of the country with me and I have to be productive.

Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A:Windows XP - Keyboard - some letters I have to type multiple times for them to appear

Laptop keyboard problem

This could be a failing keyboard matrix, fairly simple to order a new one from Dell and fit. Or it could be the keyboard software faulty. A way to check for a failing keyboard, is to plug in a separate keyboard, into a USB socket. If all works well, then the fault is the Laptop's keyboard. Hope that helps, if only to eliminate one possible problem.

The keyboard on my Dell 1501, will not the letters I,O,P when I press them. My laptop is older, just three years, and has had moderate use, mainly my husband looking for information. It has the Vista program, I know, but it has worked basically fine for the little use it gets. Nothing has been spilled on it, could they be worn out/

Is there anyway to take the keyboard cover off without damaging it and look to see if there is some type of debris blocking the connection?

A:3 keys won't type on keyboard

Inspiron 1501 laptop from Dell seems straight forward for removing keyboard to check for debris. Check it out at:

Read directions carefully as laptops are quite delicate.

good Luck
Failing that, a new one shouldn't be too expensive.

Hello!

Bear with me here... I am a rookie in the networking business but I read through many threads and helpful "manuals"; however I have a bit of a specific question which I could not find anywhere...

After setting up my old US Robotics USR5463 router as an access point (DHCP off, static IP, used WSD) to be able to extend the wireless network (main router D Link Dir 655) I came across a problem of connecting another device to the "access point". My question is: Is it possible to connect via cable a device to the router number two after convrting it to an access point?

I hope the question is understandable...
Any and all help appreciated,
Regards,

I have a Linksys WR54GS router as my main router attached to the internet. I run a Bed & Breakfast and I give my guests free access to the internet via WiFi. My problem is, I also use that network for my business and personal computers and I am afraid that a tech savvy guest could hack into my files. I thought that if I connect a second WiFi router, I could set up a second network which my guests could use to access the web thru my main router.

Does anyone have a clue if this is possible?

It mostly depends on the company that is your internet provider... With their sayso, you can do it easily... just be sure the channels are widely different, and that you can control them through your client setups so the customer understands what and where.

I have an Actiontec PK5000 connected to a DSL line. I have Linksys WRT54G connected to the Actiontec. I want the Linksys do the DHCP address assigning because the Linksys (with DD-WRT firmware) had more capabilities than the Actiontec. However, use the DD-WRT features (MAC blocking, etc.) the Linksys must do the address assigning (DHCP).

I can get the Linksys to do the wifi connections but the Actiontec is doing the DHCP. Turning off DHCP on the Actiontec and turning the Linksys DHCP on does not make the Linksys assign the addresses.

How can I configure these two routers to get the Linksys to do the DHCP?

Notice that the WiFI IPv4 address and the gateway+dns addresses are all on the same subnet (a requirement :grinthumb )
The Wired Nic is a mess; the IPv4 address is not connected to the same gateway + DNS subnet.

For Win/XP, uninstall IPv6;
For your Win/7 just disable IPv6 and reboot.

Look for interference sources. Be sure none of the equipment is within 10 inches of any surface such as a wall, and is 12 inches or more from any corner... or heat source... or electrical fan or special lighting.

Some TV or video screens can also have an influence if within 20 inches.

Didn't see your screen grab.

Can we assume you have attempted to uninstall, then install to a different setting?

I am building a PC and i found out about SSD drives. I have never heard of them before. Anyways I wanted to get one but I'm not sure how many GB do you need. I was thinking of using it for the operating system so it starts up faster and then use my 1TB HDD for all other files. can you do that?

A:What type of SSD do you need?

Three issues: Cost, size, and speed.
And their long-term reliability is still in question.
Plenty of 60 GB and 80 GB SSD drives available for under $100 now... but above that, you can easily pay $235 to $285 for one that is fast and rugged.
There are price drops nearly every week... while 12 different manufacturers know this is the cash cow. They are all rushing to beat their competition.
After Christmas, there will be 350 GB to 500 GB drives at a reasonable price... Then if they work well, two years from now, you probably will not find many regular hard drives still on the market.
We just received our first SSD drives on the first of July... and so far they are impressive... Quiet, relatively fast, but not nearly as fast as a Good Western Digital, Samsung, Seagate, Fujitsu, or Seagate hard drive... But they are now up to $350 for 250 GB.
Now if we only knew something about their long-term reliability... everybody speculates they will be good for five years... We will need to be convinced.
In the meantime there is nothing wrong with using a Western Digital, Seagate, Fujitsu, Toshiba, or Samsung drive that is 500 GB for $55... or a 750 GB for $80. Just avoid the unreliable TriGem, Hitachi, Maxtor, There are still plenty of problems with the 1TB 1.5TB, and 2 TB hard drives.. mostly with speed and early failures..

I have kind of a strange situation (I think) let me explain and see if someone can point me in the right direction. I currently have a wireless network up and running. I get a string wireless signal throughout most of the house.

I recently added a internet ready TV in another room. The TV has an ethernet port, and is not capable of wireless connection to my existing network.

Without running any ethernet cable all over the house, how can I get the TV connected to my existing network???

Can I add another wirless router close to the TV, run a cable from the TV to the new router, and have the two wireless routers connect??

Im currently using a lynksys WRK54,

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!

A:Wired / wireless hybrid network

Hey, what your saying would be using the second router as a sort of repeater and then using one of the switch ports on the back to connect the TV to the router.
In this case, you could just use a wireless adapter. If the TV has USB, I believe you can use that, if not. there are USB to Ethernet adapters that you can use to connect the adapter to your TV.
This would also cost a fraction of the price, since the only routers that I know of that can work as repeaters are DD-WRTs with the firmware upgrade.

This was my first attempt at helping someone out, so I hope I was at least some help lol.

I bought a Belkin G Wireless Router about 8 months back.

Starting a few weeks ago, I've had to set a static IP address to my recently built computer (sitting at 192.168.2.10 right now) for it to not disconnect every few minutes.

I then noticed that no wireless devices (tested with 2 Laptops and Ipod Touch) could connect. If I restarted the router and did NOT connect anything to it, it would connect with local access only. If I attempt to set the router up using the CD that came with the packaging, it claims it cannot connect to the internet, and then proceeds to actually kick me off the net.

Does anyone have any clue what coulda caused this?

As far as I know, I've not changed anything.

A:Can connect to wired but not wireless

My first thought is you should not post all off your IP info

Just got Road Runner Turbo, but my speed is still awful. I'm running though a wireless G and would like to plug directly into the computer and test it again.
I unplugged from the router and plugged into the computer but got no internet. I set up (or thought I set up) a new connection and got nothing.

A:Switching from wireless to wired

use the Device Mgr to verify there are no Red or Yellow Flags on the Network Devices.

Disable the WiFi device will make it easier to use the Network Wizard
CP->Network Connection Wizard

Here s exactly what happened I ve been trying to get my router to support an airport wireless adapter and an Xbox I have computers that currently connect to the airport adapter just fine but only when I directly connect that adapter to the modem Earlier today I was toying around with the router I manually reset it once because I forgot the password and username Router Need wired Linksys a with help After that I went to the router home page and attempted a firmware update I uploaded the file that I got from the Need help with a wired Linksys Router Linksys website yes I m positive it was for the right router and eventually it said settings are successfully updated or w e I had the option to click a continue tab so I did it but that s when everything turned to hell I haven t been able to get Need help with a wired Linksys Router the router to work since Whenever I reset everything and reconnect it all I just tries to acquire the network address and eventually says limited or no connectivity I followed the instructions for the firmware update to the T When I try to Need help with a wired Linksys Router run the set up disc provided by Linksys it says it can t detect the router and won t go past step The weird thing about it is that after the firmware update my connection was screwed but then I disabled the wired LAN connection in the device manager ran a windows network setup and my connection was miraculously restored for about - minutes I had enough time to look at the router home page again and the version next to the firmware wasn t the one that I downloaded so I m assuming that the updated was unsuccessful I have tried to manually reset the router or times now and nothing is working The router is a BEFSR version wired Anyone have any thoughts or info on how to fix this I d greatly appreciate it nbsp
