I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Not really. The ADSL router doesn't have the correct WAN interface. You need a standard router with an Ethernet WAN connection.

Hello I am having a strange problem connecting Wireless ADSL modem to an -port D-Link DES D switch If I connect the long connect connecting cable adsl2+ meter does modem using switch to not 12 a Wireless ADSL modem to my -port switch with a short -meter long CAT cable then it works connecting adsl2+ modem to switch using a 12 meter long cable does not connect well without any problem No losses shown on ping no losses even with packets using ping l command But if I use a long CAT cable of around meters then it does not connect at all Light on the -port switch is not stable and it keeps on blinking and ping just totally fails I tried changing cable too using CAT assuming that first CAT cable may be defective and then I even used another -port switch one of same D-Link model and one other of Intex make but no difference same error I also tried different ADSL modems wired and wireless but same error on all of them Now strangely if I connect the same Wireless ADSL modem directly to my computer without any switch in-between using same cable then it works I even joined both the cables to make it a total of around -meter length then also it worked without any losses Means without switch no length issues while connecting Wireless ADSL modems to PC I tried using straight and crossover cables but same results Switch is unmanaged so it is supposed to handle both types of cables but still I tried just to be sure Now one more thing I replaced -port D-Link DES D switch with a -port D-Link DGS D switch then it worked So it means that -port switches cannot be used to connect Wireless ADSL modems for long lengths Also -port switch is a Gigabit switch as compared to -port M switch so that will make any difference on this scheme If so then very strange because -port D-Link DES D switches connect PCs over up to - meters then why not take the Wireless ADSL modems to just meters All my IP addresses are static I am not using any DHCP in any hardware Please suggest if I am doing something wrong or how can I connect the Wireless ADSL modems with a -meter long cable I need a switch because I need my other PCs on wireless network too which are connected to same switch I do not want to invest into a new -port switch which connects it because just for PCs having a -port switch at home is not a wise option Kindly suggest Thanks NS nbsp

The only thing that comes to mind is some fault in the specific switches you're using. Are these cables you fabricated, or commercial cables? I'd make SURE they're wired correctly.

Alright. Right now I'm getting my internet from a Cable Modem. The Cable Modem has only 1 ethernet cable slot (where it connects to my computer). The problem is, I want to have another ethernet cable slot avaliable so I may play XBox Live without disconnecting the computer.

I have a DSL Router here, WITHOUT the cable thing (the metal part that sticks out in order to screw the cable to). I also have 2 ethernet cables. How do I go about configuring this mess?

Hi Guys,

I used verizon wireless broadband service for an year . Now I?m switched to roadrunner. The problem is cable modem is not wireless so I feel uncomfortable with the wires and all.
I still have DSL broadband router that Verizon provided (Westell Versalink 327w). This has DSL connector for in and regular 4 Ethernet connector.
Is it possible to connect this router to cable modem and use it as normal router? If possible is it very difficult to seup?
My cabel modem is RCA DCM425 (http://support.cox.com/sdccommon/asp...86f1#back_view)

Thanks a lot

A:Can I connect Cable modem to DSL router?

no. DSL and cable internet are two very different technologies. You'll need a standard router that you can use with any type of ISP. Then all you need is a cable modem or a DSL modem depending upon the type of service you have.

So I have AT&T DSL. I bought a Netgear N300 ADSL2+ Modem/WiFi Router that is compatible with my service.

Previously with this Modem/Router it would constantly drop the wireless connection for the Wii I have that was used to stream Netflix.

So recently I bought a Linksys E2500 Router so I could be able to use the Wii, along with 3 other desktops, 1 laptop, and 3 phones.

My ideal setup would be this:
Set the ADSL2+ Modem/Router to be just a modem (I know how to set the option for this)Connect the Linksys Router to be what all the devices connect to wirelessly (this would serve as the DHCP server)
I have read that one of the Routers has to be set to "BRIDGED" mode, yet I don't know which device has to be Bridged

Set the ADSL2+ Modem/Router to be just a modem (I know how to set the option for this)Click to expand...

this is being set into bridge mode - by changing to a modem

then connect the modem to the WAN on the router and you should be good to go

Do you have a wireless laptop that you can you can put next to the wii - would be useful to see the quality of the wireless signal and how many other wireless are there which may cause interference

put xirrus onto the laptop and put the laptop next to the wii and post a xirrus screen shot
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Run Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector
Download and install
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to copy the program across to the faulty PC
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file and install the program.
You will now need to take a screen shot and copy that back to the working PC and attach the screen shot in a reply on the forum here.

http://www.xirrus.com/Products/Wi-Fi-Inspector.aspx
Direct link to the program is here http://info.xirrus.com/Wi-FiInspectorConfirmation.html

{If the above link does not work heres another link http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_download/fid,77196-order,4/download.html}

Then run and install the program - on a wireless enabled PC/Laptop
if you get an error - You need will need to have NET Framework installed for the WiFi Inspector to function.
On windows 8 - (i do not have windows 8) but, it would appear that, When you first try to run, you may get a message that .net framework is needed, and included in that message is a link to download/install.

Run the program

A user guide is available here http://www.xirrus.com/cdn/pdf/Xirrus-Wi-Fi-inspectorguide-1-2-1-RevB-6.aspx

post a screen shot of the program running.
if there are a lot of networks showing can you click on "networks" top lefthand area - so we can see all the network information.

post which SSID name is yours, its located in the list, under network "Adapter Name" (1st column)

To post a screen shot of the active window.
1) hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application (Start> All Programs> Accessories> Paint) and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file.
OR
2) if you are using Vista/Windows 7 you can use the "snipping tool" which is found in Start> All programs> Accessories> Snipping Tool

To upload the screen shot to the forum, open the full reply window ("Go Advanced" button) and use the Manage Attachments button to upload it here.
Full details are available here http://library.techguy.org/wiki/TSG_Posting_a_Screenshot

Note:
For a reliable (or robust as the Xirrus user guide says) wireless connection you need a signal of about -70 dBm or better. "A desirable signal level for a robust Wi-Fi connection will be green".
note: the signal level is a negative number, so for example -88 is worst and -40 is better

If you are using the Mac OS then use http://www.istumbler.net/

if you want to optimise base station position and signal strength / dead spots use
http://www.chimoosoft.com/products/apgrapher/ which has a graph function to monitor signal

I saw some ADSL modems which also ran your network (access point/router etc) which worked while your computer is off, but I can't find them now.

The advantage is power-saving on the main PC while the others in the network can access the broadband anytime they want.

Does anyone know of any good hardware available in the UK?

A:Looking for ADSL2 modem/access point/router which works while PC is off

All those modems "work" even without a connected PC..

If you want to share an internet connection to several computers, then you need a router. As I gather, at the moment it is one of your PCs that is acting as a router.

If your current modem has an ethernet port, then it will work with any router that has an ethernet WAN option. If you currently have a modem with only USB, then you have to replace it.

Your circuit the router is plugged into has a problem, the router's power supply is faulty, or the router itself is faulty.

the MODEM uses PPPoE, the router should not. the ADSL modem will hold the connection

Hi guys I'm new here so please be nice

OK! so before i changed to TPG ADSL2+ i used to be on optus cable using a Netgear Wireless N router. then when i got TPG, i need a router but found out i had to get a combo modem/router. so i got an Open Networks 824RLW which has wireless G.

This unfortunately in my double brick double story house isn't good enough for some pc's. So i know there is a way to do it but i dont know what it is... I'd like to disable the wireless (G) of the Open Networks and keep the modem of it working (and possibly the ethernet ports) and connect my Netgear Wireless N router and use it for wireless (N) and wired networking.

Can anyone help me?

Thanks, Assassin.

A:Wireless N Router + ADSL2 Modem/Router

Welcome to Seven Forums!

You can certainly do what you describe. It will come down to reconfiguring the two routers.

First, reconfigure the ADSL router (824RLW) to turn off the wireless. I looked at the manual and you can disable the WLAN.

Next, on the old "N" router, disable the DHCP server. This will prevent it from handing out addresses. Also give the NetGear router's LAN port a static IP address on the same subnet as the 824RLW. make it's outside the DHCP range though.

This last piece is important. Connect a cable from one of the four LAN ports on the 824RLW to one of the LAN ports on the old "N" router. NOT the WAN port! The routers have two sides, WAN (Internet) and LAN (Inside). The radio and the switch ports are on the same side (LAN). That's the side you want.

By doing this you bypass the Netgear's router function completely.

A:Connect a Wireless Modem to ADSL modem for Wifi

The "nokia siemens SL2_141" is a modem/wireless router combo; I assume that "A Wireless Modem of MTS" is also a modem/wireless router combo.

If my assumption is correct you can use the Nokia as an ethernet switch and wireless access point ...

JohnWill's procedure (Aug. 30, 2008) for configuring a secondary router as a switch and, optionally, wireless access point follows.

Connecting two (or more) SOHO broadband routers together.

Note: The "primary" router can be an actual router, a software gateway like Microsoft Internet Connection Sharing, or a server connection that has the capability to supply more than one IP address using DHCP server capability. No changes are made to the primary "router" configuration.

Configure the IP address of the secondary router(s) to be in the same subnet as the primary router, but out of the range of the DHCP server in the primary router. For instance DHCP server addresses 192.168.0.2 through 192.168.0.100, I'd assign the secondary router 192.168.0.254 as it's IP address, 192.168.0.253 for another router, etc.

Note: Do this first, as you will have to reboot the computer to connect to the router again for the remaining changes.

Disable the DHCP server in the secondary router.

Setup the wireless section just the way you would if it was the primary router, channels, encryption, etc.

Connect from the primary router's LAN port to one of the LAN ports on the secondary router. If there is no uplink port and neither of the routers have auto-sensing ports, use a cross-over cable. [You will not need a cross-over cable if one of the "routers" is a computer.] Leave the WAN port unconnected!

This procedure bypasses the routing function (NAT layer) and configures the router as a switch (or wireless access point for wireless routers).

For reference, here's a link to a Typical example config using a Netgear router

My Motorola SBG901 Modem/Router combo has stopped connecting to the internet. I have done all the troubleshooting with Comcast and with Motorola and it is out of warranty, so I will have to purchase a new one.

In the mean time, I wanted to use it only as a wireless router connected to my Scientific Atlanta DPC2100R2 modem. Is there any way to do this? Is there a way to disable the modem in the SBG901?

Simply connecting with the ethernet cords has not worked. I connected the DPC2100 to the SBG901 via ethernet cord. My computer was able to pick up a wireless connection but there is no cable connection. I am using Windows 7.

Perhaps a really skilled electronics engineer or technician could take it apart, separate the modem from the router portion and add an ethernet WAN port.

On the second router, DHCP needs to be disabled and assign a fixed IP within the router's IP scope (with Wi-Fi capability) i.e. 192.168.1.3 (make sure that 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.3 will be in the IP exclusion list).

Appreciate some assistance.

Have a PC running W-Millenium. Going to format the hard drive (too many programs installed, virus problems, spyware, etc.) and reinstall the OS.

The current PC uses a cable ISP (Charter.net), and is connected to a router and a cable modem.

After installing the OS to a clean Hard Drive, installing drivers for video, sound card, etc., and some programs, the PC needs to be connected back to the router and the cable modem to establish an Internet connection.

Might be a super dumb question, but, which software should be installed first, that of the router, that of the cable modem, or does it matter?

Any guidance somewhere that shows the steps needed to connect the PC to both a router and a cable modem?

I have succesfully been on the internet for a while now with a cable modem surfboard 4200 connected to a router smc 7004br connected to 2 pc's. the thing is that I had to manually input everything into my tcp/ip settings in the network panel for it all to work.

After reading umteen million times that all I had to do was to hook up the router to my nic cards and all would work (which it didn't ) I was just wondering how to go about just setting the tcp/ip settings to obtain an ip address automatically.

by the way when I do set it up that way I lose all connection to the internet.

can someone who has a 7004 br and win 98 1st edition tell me how to do so, also my internet provider is comcast...

I have a Linksys WCG200-CC, which is an router/modem/wireless combo and I was wondering if it is possible to access the cable modem. I know how to access the user friendly network set up screen, but I am trying to enable more than just the 5 addresses (192.168.0.10-14)(Comcast has somehow locked it to this). If I can't expand from the router, can I use another router to give me more addresses?

Hi,

I recently bought dlink D2750U WIFI ADSL modem/router, for my ADSL internet connection.

But I have now changed my ISP, who provide internet via cable(not telephone line). The ISP guy provides a cable modem(old modem) along with it.

I have connected my PC this way:
Cable modem -> Router -> PC through RJ45. I am able to access internet from my PC, but I am not able to get wifi working on the router. And I am logging onto internet through a dial up connection.
Questions:
1) Please help in configuring the router to get wifi working.
2) Also, my default gateway seems to be either 0.0.0.0 or blank. So, I am not able to login to the modem unless I remove the modem connection. Please let me know if I am doing anything wrong here.

Here are a few more details:
Output of ipconfig: http://pastebin.com/Zr9Eb7L7

A:Using dlink D2750U Wifi Modem/Router As a Wifi Router

Hey Narain. The D-Link unit you have appears to be a combo unit (modem and wireless router) since it connects straight to the RJ-11 phone line. This unit won't work with an ISP that provides service by way of coax cable. The D-Link will work if you want to use DSL, but you need a cable service compatible modem or combo modem/router if you use cable service.

A:Need an ADSL2 Modem

First.. Did your ISP just upgrade their network or do they actually give you ADSL2 speed? Usually customers get connection speeds way less than the network's capabilities.

Second.. As I have said before, a plain 100Mbit ethernet is several times faster than any DSL connection. No matter what you do with your LAN, your internet speeds will not improve.

Yes, all switches and routers have RAM in them.

Hi suomi64,
Welcome to the forums.
I would bypass the router and plug a Ethernet cable from the charter cable modem directly to the laptop and see what happens. If it works then try a different port on your router.

A:Can my unserviced DSL router be used as a router to my Motorola cable modem?

probably not, apples/oranges.

dsl uses phone lines which means you have/had dsl with your phone service.

cable uses coax cable to the modem and tv in my case with roadrunner, also provides digital phone service.

the cable comes in and i use a splitter for the modem/with phone jack for digital phone service and to the router/computers, both wired and wireless.

My wife's sister has Comcast Cable. They installed a Modem/Router that the wireless part seems to have died. Can a wireless router be connected via ethernet cable to the cable modem/ router?

A:Connecting Wireless router to Cable Modem/Router

Yes, adding a wifi router to one of the ports will set it as a node on the dhcp server{modem} and if there is a conflict in ip address, usually will change it to a 10.0.0.1

Here's the situation, I just upgraded from DSL to cable due to the fact that my cable company was supplying a package which consisted of: Broadband, Telephone, and of course cable. What I would like to do is purchase a wireless router in order to provided access to one other computer and my Xbox 360 (Connected via: Wireless Gaming Adapter), but I'm unsure how to go about doing this. Here's the information I recieve when using IPCONFIG
IP Address:74.140.157.56
Subnet Mask:255.255.224.0
Default Gateway:74.140.128.1
DHCP Server:74.128.9.4
DNS Servers:74.131.0.20
74.131.0.21

I guess my real question would be, if I bought a router could I implement NAT in order to connect multiple computers to the internet, is a router compatible with this modem?

It's important to make sure you have the latest firmware for that router. After updating it reset it to factory defaults and reconfigure it.

Yes, 20+ people is a pretty heavy load for a SOHO router. Note that if one user in the best of times gets 17 Mbps download 20 users with each average less than 1 Mbps at best.

Please show for a connection to the modem, and for a connection to the router ...

Start, Run, CMD, OK to open a command prompt:

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

Hi,

I currently have Virgin cable broadband and wish to establish a wireless connection to my PS3. I have a wireless router (Sagem model...old one from now defunct Sky Broadband service) and would like advice as to how to make the physical connections between cable modem, wireless router and the PC.

Many thanks in anticipation of help.

A:Cable modem + wireless router

Generally,the cabling is.
Cable connection to modem
ethernet connection from modem to router's wan/internet(could be called either)
If you want a wired connection, then from the router's lan port, ethernet connection to your pc's lan/ethernet port.

Before doing anything, power off both devices.
When completed with cabling, power on modem first, wait for it to settle(proper lights on)
Then power on the router and as above, wait for it to settle(generally, power light, wan light, internet light and ethernet port light if you have a hard wired connection.)

Then, log onto your router's admin page and set up your wireless network(security encryption, wireless mode, name, channel, etc.Hopefully you have a user's guide for your router)
Hope this helps a bit

Also, how can I use wireless router inside the panel and still have adequate range? It seems that wireless wouldn't work inside a metal box. Are there remote mounting antennas that handle this issue?

Hey guys this and Modem Wireless Cable Router is my first post here Hello to all I m using a cable internet service which requires me to login every time using their login page which opens in a browser when i try to access a website This has to be done everytime the modem restarts which is frequent due to frequent power outages in my country I have to use a wireless router since my primary machine is a laptop and I can t sit at one place with the ethernet cable connected to the modem all the time With the wireless router the system is unreliable Sometimes it will open the login page sometimes it wont Sometimes it will open webpages sometimes it Cable Modem and Wireless Router wont and sometimes it will only open select pages I was wondering if i can use some setting on the router to save my username and password for the cable internet service that would automatically log it in so i don t have to do that manually every time It could be done with DSL using the PPPOE setting doesn t that work with cable internet I m using the Linksys WRT G nbsp

A:Cable Modem and Wireless Router

You didn't mention which country, but I will make some assumptions.

No, PPPoE doesn't work on cable modems, so you can't use that. On most routers/cable modems, the web page thing is an configurable option on the router. You need to turn it off. Contact your ISP about turning it off.

In the U.S. cable service does not require a log in (by the user) The cable modem does this automatically before the modem even comes up. It is invisible to the user. ADSL always requires a login. This is where the PPPoE auto login comes in.

A:Cable Modem Gateway + Router

One of the problems you have is that router will severely limit your internet speed. I had one with the comcast connection and it dropped me from 21MBs to 6 MBs. Once I trashed that and went with comcast's modem I was back up to full speed. Seeing how you pay roadrunner, I had them when I was in TX., I would call them and tell them that you want to switch to AT&T. Not that you really are intending to but let them know this. Then tell them the problems you are having and that is the only reason you are thinking of canceling with them and switching to AT&T. Watch how fast they quickly offer to resolve your problem by sending a Tech out for free and fixing the problem for you. They key word here is you have to tell them that you are thinking of canceling with them and switching to AT&T. That should fix your problem with no headaches on your part! Post back to what they reply with you.

A:Cable to Modem 2 router 2 wireless help PLS

Start by telling us the exact make/model of the modem and the two routers.
Here's a suggested configuration that should work, but it's based on the limited information we have to work with.

Here's what I'd do first, this is using the modem and the wired router.
Reset the router to factory defaults by holding the reset button down for 15 seconds with power on. The following procedure should get you a connection with any broadband modem that is configured to use DHCP for the router connection, such as cable modems, and many DSL modems. If you require PPPoE configuration for the DSL modem, that will have to be configured to match the ISP requirements.
Turn off everything, the modem, router, computer.
Connect the modem to the router's WAN/Internet port.
Connect the computer to one of the router's LAN/Network ports.
Turn on the modem, wait for a steady connect light.
Turn on the router, wait for two minutes.
Boot the computer.

When the computer is completely booted, let's see this.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

IPCONFIG /ALL

PING <computer_IP_address>

PING <default_gateway_address>

PING <dns_servers>

PING 206.190.60.37

PING yahoo.com

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

<computer_IP_address> - The IP Address of your computer, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

<default_gateway_address> - The IP address of the Default Gateway, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

<dns_servers> - The IP address of the first (or only) address for DNS Servers, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Next, I'd configure the wireless router as follows.

Connecting two (or more) SOHO broadband routers together.

Note: The "primary" router can be an actual router, a software
gateway like Microsoft Internet Connection Sharing, or a server connection that has the capability to supply more than one IP address using DHCP server capability.

Leave the WAN port unconnected!

This procedure bypasses the routing function (NAT layer) and configures the router as a switch (or wireless access point for wireless routers).

My Netgear FVS318 router is connected to an Optimum Online cable modem (dynamic IP). The router needs to be rebooted periodically (the internet connection stops). I think it is when the cable modem had gotten a new IP address. I'm not completely sure of that but it just happened and I noticed my modem a new IP address than what it had yesterday.

This happens every few days or so. The cable modem has a phone line that keeps working even when the internet is down, when I reboot the router the internet comes back up right away.

Would there be a setting in the router to help it adjust? or might there be a different problem?

Thanks

According to the user's manual on my cable modem (a motorola SBV5220), "You can connect a single computer to the USB port and from one to 31 remaining users to an Ethernet hub, as shown."
Here's the diagram (as well as i can get it - cant find the manual on-line):

Comp \
Comp---Ethernet Hub or Switch----Cable Modem
Comp /
Does this mean that I could use an ethernet hub or switch to share my connection over 3 or 4 computers, or would i need mutiple IP addresses to be able to do this (in which case i would use a router instead)? Tech support at motorola referred me to Time Warner, and TW's tech support had no clue what i was talking about.

Just seeing if i can save a couple bucks. If anyone understands what i'm trying to say, thankyou for your assistance.

A:Will my cable modem serve as a router?

That tech support person at Motorola certainly is not on the "A" team.

I found the "data sheet" online. No mention of the magic words "router" or "gateway" so I think that it is safe to say the suggested network (which is also in my Motorola SB4200 manual) implies multiple IP addresses.

As you suspected, you want to put a router in that diagram in place of "Ethernet Hub or Switch."

Time Warner just came out on Saturday to install cable internet (Road Runner). However, he couldn't get it to connect through the ethernet, it will only get online from the USB.

The whole problem is that when I click on Repair (I have XP) it says that it cannot renew my IP address. I thought the problem might be on my end, so I bought a new NIC. No change.

Then time warner gave me a new modem, and the problem still persists.

I've already run the ipconfig /release junk, and it changed nothing.

Before I moved into this new apartment, I was using T1 cable from the old apartment, so I know my ethernet slot works as well as the cords and such.

What is going on?? I'm so confused, and I'd like my internet to go thru the ethernet so that I can get Vonage phone service.

Any help would be great! :giddy:

I would like to know if by using a standard router I could connect to a cable/dsl modem as well as another switch for file/print sharing by using a crossover cable.

My situation is that my company is going to be renting space at an office. The GM said we can use the printer they have, but we have to get our own interent access. My thinking was that i would be able to use a router and connect to a cable/dsl modem on the WAN port then use a crossover cable to connect to the switch that the printer is connected to. Will this work or do I need to get something with dual WAN ports?

Thanks in advance!!

I have an issue with my Windows 10 PC not connecting to my cable modem by ethernet cable. I connect the PC to the modem and all I get is "unidentified network - no internet", yet my laptop connects to the modem by ethernet (I'm using it now) just fine. I've tried everything I can think of to get my PC to connect to the modem, but nothing has fixed the problem so far. I can connect my phone to the modem fine by wifi as well, so the modem isn't the issue - or is it? Yesterday I had no issues with connecting to the modem and internet until I had a "blue screen event" and when the computer rebooted, I had the yellow triangle ! ever since.

I've got 15 Mbps internet service from the cable company. When just one computer is connected to the modem without the router, the speeds average about 8-9 Mbps. However, when we attach the router to share the internet, speeds drop off significantly, like down to about 1-1.5 Mbps average and max at about 2-3 Mbps (around 3000 KB/s) and that's when one computer is downloading and the other computer is idle. The router says its capable of 54 Mbps and both computers have 10/100 ethernet adapters. Also, I'm using another router as a repeater since we don't have a long enough cable from where the one router hooked into the modem is.

I don't understand how the router is restricting the speeds since me and my roommate share large files (4-5 gigs sometimes) and we can transfer files of that size in like 4-5 minutes.

I need to buy both because I'm only getting 20 Mbps.
It seems like I should not install both new components, but start with the cable modem.

Or am I being too conservative and should go with both being 802.11ac components instead of 802.11n?

For the cable modem, I am considering ARRIS/Motorola SB6141 which Time Warner approves of for 50 Mbps. I think/hope it will talk to my old router - a Linksys WRT54G.

For the router - ASUS RTN66U.

All advice appreciated,
cb

A:Router and Cable Modem - Install both at the Same Time?

Both your existing router and modem are rated for at least 50Mbps so I would check with Time Warner first to make sure you are supposed to be getting faster service. I'm on Cox and they have three tiers rated at various speeds. Tier 1 is 20Mbps, Tier 2 is 50Mbps, and Tier 3 is 150Mbps; I have Tier 2. I recently replaced both my modem and my router because they were over seven years old and the router was dying. However, I had to do some tweaking with the piddle poor cabling job Cox's contract installers did to get the full speed I was supposed to get (the biggest improvement came from putting a terminating cap on the unused leg of the data tap). Also, you most likely share the same cable connection with several of your neighbors and that can slow down the speeds you can get. During high volume traffic times, my speeds can drop to as low as 30 Mbps. What position you are on the line can also affect the maximum speed you can get; the farther away you are from your ISP's hub, the less speed you will get.

If you do decide to replace both, I would get and install the modem first, then, if necessary get and install the router.

I have done this before where I had gotten cable on the month special for months I switched over from dsl to cable so I found a post about how to turn your westel into a wireless router for your cable network It worked like a charm back when I did it before Well my year is up for dsl so I went back to cable on the special as my to cable westel327w modem. router Use a connected my again but this time I can not get the westel to work with Use my westel327w as a router connected to my cable modem. the cable modem again The directions for doing it are here Re Use Versalink W with cable modem It Use my westel327w as a router connected to my cable modem. was suggested to me by the cable forum that I ask here There are two things I am not certain about as I ve lost the detailed directions I had made long ago in case I wanted to do this again For one is ethernet port the uplink port or is ethernet port the uplink port I looked at a user guide and it says E but there is a networking picture over E So I m not sure I have been trying with no avail but it may be because of another issue I am asking to be sure as I ve tried everything anyways The second question I had was should I be using a straight-thru cable or a crossover cable to connect the westel to the surfboard cable modem I am guessing straight-thru if indeed one of the ports are designated as uplink right The funny thing about the uplink port is normally it is a regular ethernet port to hook up to my computer yet for the purposes of connecting a router or whathave you it says that that same port becomes an uplink port So I m not sure if it means it is specially configured to do both without changing the wiring around Not sure that s why the confusion over which of the two cable types to use to connect the two devices with Well I believe I ve tried quite a bit of different ways with the cables and the ports with no luck One thing I notice is that the instructions say to enable dhcp after the first reset happens to the westel but when I check it it s already enabled I dunno why that would be there in the instructions if it didn t need to be done Well I am just grabbing at anything now I guess I hope someone has run into a similar situation and has a solution Thanks in advance nbsp

First off, let's see this when you're plugged directly into the modem.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

Next, try this procedure for getting a wired connection to the router, we'll work on wireless after this works.

Reset the router to factory defaults by holding the reset button down for 15 seconds with power on.

When the computer is completely booted, you should have Internet access. If not, I want to see this again.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Hi!
I have Comcast and have a Linksys wired router that my brother's friend put on my computer so that my brother could have Internet access.

It's been great for months, but yesterday and today, my Internet is very slow and times out. The Comcast guy said he checked my connection and there are no outages and also ran a couple of tests to my modem, and did not get any slow or missing responses.

He said I should try plugging the computer directly to the cable modem to see if the router is the problem.

But when I do that, I get no Internet at all.

Any suggestions? Thanks

About every 1-2 weeks my router loses the connection to the internet via cable modem. This has happened with 2 different cable modems (Netgear CM212 and Motorola Surfboard 5100) and also with 2 different routers (Netgear 614 and D-Link DI-524). When this happens the thing that usually fixes it is unplugging the router for several minutes and then plugging it back in again. I have Windows XP set to automatically detect the internet connection, and the router is set to use DHCP. Sometimes I also have to bypass the router and then put it back (so this could be partially a Windows problem?). Is there any way I can configure the router so it doesn't keep losing the internet connection? I have Comcast cable modem service.

Thank you.

Now since moving, I have an intermitent connection, on for 30 min, reboot router, on for another 30 min...

The cable company will check the modem, but if its not the modem they won't try to fix the problem, but will charge $50

Could this be a modem issue?

Any tweaks I could do to my router's settings?

What do you want to try to do? If the router is dropping the WAN connection it will probably drop it no matter what it is connected to. See if there is a firmware upgrade and then reset the router to factory default settings. Sometimes one or both these steps will "shock" it into behaving again.

You can't bridge the connections as you described unless you are paying for two public IP addresses from your ISP. And then you still may not be able to because you can probably only get one on the USB connection.

If you want to use the Belkin as an ethernet switch and wireless access point the following is the complete procedure.

So I ran into a very puzzling situation this weekend and I m wondering if anyone has any theories as to what may have happened I have one but it has huge holes in it This weekend overnight with no weather events such as a storm both Mysterious Router... deaths Cable modem and of my Cable Modem a Ubee model model number escapes me at the moment but I can get it later and my TP Link Archer C both died on me They were hooked in to a surge protector not just a power strip with a few other devices none of which are showing any signs of Mysterious deaths of Cable modem and Router... a surge or power spike Both devices do quot power on quot but that s about the end of where they work correctly The modem would only function for about minutes after a reboot after that no connection could be made This was checked with a wired connection with multiple latops and consistently around minutes after a reboot connection was lost every time The router was a bit different it Mysterious deaths of Cable modem and Router... would also power up and broadcast both and G signals but would not issue IP addresses to wireless devices or even wired devices The IP address would also not get me to the router gateway even after soft and full resets I unplugged it for about minutes to both let any residual power fade and let it cool down if there was a potential heat issue When powered back up wireless devices would be allowed to connect to the router but not allowed to connect to the internet Wired devices were also not allowed to connect to the internet this is post getting a new modem that finally maintained connection but they were finally able to access the router s IP gateway Changing the settings in the router IP setup did nothing even after attempting to go through a full setup after a Factory Reset and Firmware flash My question I guess is what the hell would do this I thought maybe a power spike through the cable line took out the modem but that doesn t explain why the router went out Other devices wired into the router are also fine I m at a bit of a loss but I really just want to do what I can to prevent this from happening again nbsp

I recently purchased a wireless router (netgear WGT624). I have it connected to a cable modem provided by charter communications. I am connected on one computer with a wireless card(it is compatable with the router, works fine) and on my computer i am connected by network patch cable to the router. Everything works fine for a while but then the cable modem will just die or the router wont allow me to connect to the internet but if i reboot the router and modem i can again connect but the same problem keeps on occuring. Can anyone point me in the right direction to get this problem fixed?

i eventually got it set up, and working, however, i no longer have the full 100mbps speed on the desktop, as its now recieving the wireless signal instead of the mainline from the ethernet cable. not sure if thats normal, or solveable. anyways, that was with the budget Asus WL-520GC.

Today my sisiter calls me and asks if i want her NetGear Wireless-N 300 router. (WNR2000). heck yes i do! so i pick it up, disk, cable, etc...

i get home, (and maybe this is where i went wrong) but i unplugged the Asus, plugged in the NetGear, popped in the Install CD, and Bam. wont recognize the ethernet cable/network adapter. cant get past step one of install. after some digging myself, i gave up, re-plugged in the Asus, had to go through a bit of a hassle, but here i am connected again with the Asus.

id really like the Netgear to work, since its a lot better model, and shouldnt give me so much performance loss on the desktop.

anyone know whats goin on here?

If the Netgear router is second hand it will most likely need resetting to factory defaults, you can do this by poking a pin into the the indented rest button on the back,

It may be that you just have to restart your PC.

Could you also please fill in your System Specs under User CP so I can find any possible network card updates for you.

In terms of the alleged performance drop, I can almost guarantee that you won't notice a difference especially if you don't do local networking.

That 100MB/s is what an ethernet cable can handle.

Your Internet connection will be no more than 12.5MB/s (which is only achievable in Japan and South Koreas far as I'm aware).

It's more likely to be less than 1MB/s.

It is possible that that cheap router is only compatible with Ethernet 10 (10MB/S) but that really shouldn't make a difference if you're only using it for internet access.

PS a Mega bit (Mb) is different to a Megabyte (MB).

A megabit is one eighth of megabyte and internet speeds are advertised in Megabits to make them seam faster.

Both routers should be fine, but if ou want the Netgear one working I'll help you get it there.

If you have any questions please ask.

Oli

I'm switching from AT&T U-verse to Comcast since comcast can offer speeds up to 5x faster.

As you might know At&T uses ethernet as incoming signal vs. Comcast that uses 75 ohm cable.

I need to buy a new modem and router to install the new Comcast service.

I have two questions:

1) What is better? the combo modem/router units (i.e. Motorola SBG6580) or buying a separate stand-alone modem Motorola 6141 modem + Netgear N750 wireless router)?

2) I do have one issue to overcome. I have one TV in my house that is wired for cable only. That is, it has a cable run going to it. It's too difficult for me to install an ethernet run to it, so I'm stuck having to use the cable run. Are there modem/routers that have a cable OUT so that i can feed this TV its hard-wired signal?

Thanks,
bob

Hi,

I need help in configuring my cable modem/router (SMC8104wn-res) and wireless router (CISCO RV120W). What I need is to be able to be able to successfully connect the site-to-site VPN. This is how it was configured:

RV120W > Modem (DSL) > Internet > Cable modem/router > RV120W
Site 1 Site 2

I don't have issue with the site 1's end. but I need help in configuring site 2 since I need the Cable Modem/router to act as a modem only (do not know how to set this in bridge mode, disabling it as a router) and making my RV120W as the main router and as the DHCP. Can you give me a guide on how to set this up? Thanks!

Regards,
Mike

Heres the situation. I am renting an apartment in someones home. They have provided me with an ethernet cable from their router(not wireless) but the line is located in a different part of the room that i want my computer to be located in. I CANNOT snake the wire under the carpet or along the wall and do not want a line running through my living room.

So basically there is a cable modem in one section of the house with a conventional router attached to it. That router supplies me with a ethernet cable. I would like to put a wireless router on the cable that I have so I can use my computer in a different location. Will this work?
