I can load windows 98 from my cdrom, but once loaded windows can't find cd drive

Q: I can load windows 98 from my cdrom, but once loaded windows can't find cd drive

Someone please help, I have just loaded windows 98 on an IBM 330pl. I set the bios to boot from my cd rom first and it does without a problem, I load Windows and everything is going well until windows finds new devices and the drivers are on a cd. Windows doesn't recognize my cd drive at all even though it loaded from there. I'm pretty knowledgable about computers but I may need some help please. By the way I know all the connections are there and the drive is working fine as I've tested it in another machine

Thanks
Mike

Preferred Solution: I can load windows 98 from my cdrom, but once loaded windows can't find cd drive

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello and welcome to Techspot.

Have you tried going to your cd drive`s manufacturers site and downloading the latest firmware etc?

I`m not saying that this will help but it might!!

Hello My  Toshiba Laptop failed to start so i removed my newly purchased and installed SSHD and put it in a replacement computer after removing its existing hard drive. I started the computer and it has worked fine for a few weeks so i decided to reinstal
the original OEM Widows 7 disc and its product key on the CD cover. Microsoft does not recognize the product key. I have checked the number several times it is the product key i am typing in. I also have the original product key for the xp version also.

Dell laptop n14 Int. Hard drive died because I punched on mousepad long time ago. So I replaced HDD with new one. I went to SetUp to check if it detects HDD I installed recently and it did. Awesome. Then pressed F12 and pressed on flash drive to load OS. Installation showed up like it should be, went into install but it can't find my HDD. I rescanned and it still can't find HDD. If BIOs were able to detect new HDD then why won't Windows find it too?

EDIT: I using different AC power adapter because I could not find right one that are for this laptop so warning came up like this "System will adjust the performance to match the power available. Please connect a Dell 65W AC adapter or greater for best system performance"

A:OS loaded from USB successful but windows can't find my new HDD

I followed a step from Windows 7 Installation Failure - Overcome

"At first installer screen Press Shift + F10, or enter System Recovery Options to open a Command Box, type:DISKPART
LIST DISK
SELECT DISK 0 (after confirming Windows 7 target HD #)
CLEAN

So far, most of them are successful. Now it is formatting. 21% so far. Will update once it is completed.

The computer doesn't seem to have any issues and I have tried to run a startup repair from the Windows 7 installation disk with no help.

Hey everyone I ve encountered this problem in the following machine ghz AMD Sempron mb RAM x GB HDD drives x CD drive x DVD drive Biostar motherboard VIA chipset This particular computer has quot extended quot drives available or something like that that I had never seen giving it the ability to load up to IDE devices Under Hardware manager they show up as Primary Primary Secondary Secondary Now I don t know what they did before I took over but both the CD drive and DVD drive while appearing fine under the BIOS do not show up in Windows and instead have loaded but the could find On driver the correctly drives: not Windows CD device an exclamation mark next to them in the device manager I uninstalled all IDE controllers which uninstalled both On CD drives: Windows loaded the driver correctly but could not find the device drives rebooted and no good I reinstalled the Biostar Chipset drivers VIA and it didn t do any good Apparently someone had the same problem and got a solution over at x-pert x-change but their greedy hands want me to pay to see the solution Not in this lifetime buster So any help regarding this issue is greatly appreciated I will continue to troubleshoot but I m not very good at optical drives Thanks nbsp

A:On CD drives: Windows loaded the driver correctly but could not find the device

Maybe works, try to connect only one of optical driver with one of working HDD on same IDE cable and setup jumper of the optical driver as "Slave". Jumper setting is important thing on IDE connections. And put a bootable CD (like Windows setup cd) in optical driver, will it work.
Use this TOOL maybe works.
I hope that gives you some ideas.

I'm unable to find the E drive on my compaq computer, I have tried to put the recovery disk in and restart the computer but the hard drive does not want to read the E drive, so there for it won't read the disk. Is there some way around it to make it come back, like through hitting F10 in the setup screen. Or through MS-Dos Prompt? I can't get into MS-Dos either it doesn't recgonize it.

I'm trying to replace my OEM cdrom with a new one. I removed the IDE cable from the old drive to the new one. I tried running the install disk that came with the drive but the PC still can't see the drive. Device manager shows no CDROM drives.

When I plug the original drive back into the IDE cable and connect the new CDROM in the 2nd slot of the cable Windows recognizes both drives. It seems like Windows is using the driver for the original drive as a default.

Any ideas for me?

Thanks,

Hello erick1,
Do you have any DVD/CD burning software, such as Roxio, or Macrium, or any other type of software connected with the DVD/CD drive ?.
If you do, disable it, or remove it, it is more than likely that it is something like that, interfering with your DVD/CD drive.
Good luck and post your results.

This may be a stupid question with an easy answer...

But I have a Dell 4600c (it's a compact tower)
So, it only has room for one hard disk, and the stock disk is only 40gb.

I'm thinking of buying a new hard drive.. and I'm currently looking at one on eBay that is 320gb, and it says that it's pre-loaded with Windows Vista.
I currently have Windows XP, and wouldn't mind upgrading... I do have ample RAM (2gb) and a nice 2.8ghz processor. So my machine can take Vista.

But what my question is... Is my machine going to just automatically detect Vista and start running on it? Or am I going to have to go through some painful procedure? Or will this just not work at all?

-Thanks

A:Windows Vista pre-loaded onto hard drive.

Hi. . .

I would be very cautious of this. Can you provide the link to Ebay for this drive? I would be glad to take a look as personally, I have not heard of just a hard drive installed with Vista... not to say it is impossible, but...

Even if legit, your system will need drivers compatible with Vista for all hardware.

Download and run the Microsoft Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor which will tell you if your system is prepared for the introduction of Vista.

I have Windows 10 on a lenovo T400 laptop, It was upgraded from Windows 8.1. I need to replace the hard drive because it is making some noise.
My question is whether I can do a clean install of Windows 10, using the Win 10 USB that I downloaded from Microsoft? Will the computer still have the License on it; even though the Existing Drive is not being used? Or will I get an error, asking for registration/license key? Trying not to clone the existing drive, as I's like a clean install, and am a bit worried the drive may not clone properly as it's acting up.
Thanks!

If you activated Win10 on the laptop, then you should be able to replace the hard drive and do a clean install.
The activation is tied to the laptop.

First off local the "Windows you then and is the profile." cannot cannot find logging "Windows load on... profile stored locally I d like to thank you very much for even opening this thread I greatly appreciate the help The following error message only occurs after someone has been logged onto the computer on their account for an extended period of time I think it s "Windows cannot load the locally stored profile." then "Windows cannot find the local profile and is logging you on... about or hours and over but I have no way of being sure A few months ago I "Windows cannot load the locally stored profile." then "Windows cannot find the local profile and is logging you on... got a pretty bad virus infection I cleaned it all "Windows cannot load the locally stored profile." then "Windows cannot find the local profile and is logging you on... up and the system ran but had some errors going on with windows I then bought an external hard drive So I re-formatted and re-installed windows XP Then I found this error message after logging off of my user and then having my brother try to log onto his user profile There are user profiles on this computer and only one of them has administrative rights at the moment Windows cannot load the locally stored profile Possible causes of this error include insufficient security rights or a corrupt local profile If the problem persists contact your network administrator Followed by Windows cannot find the local profile and is logging you on with a temporary profile Changes you make to this profile will be lost when you log off So it only occurs when someone has been logged on for over hours and then tries to log onto another person s profile it doesn t affect only one profle but usually affects all profiles but the one that was logged into for over hours I have tried running chkdsk it comes up with no problems I ve tried running SFC exe SCANNOW but it always around the end after fixing a few problems with the Dell re-installation DVD asks me to insert windows xp CD which I don t have I only have disc that has to do with windows XP the other discs are drivers and software I am pretty annoyed with this I have tried deleting and re-making the user profiles Over the past little while I ve done several re-formatting and re-installations to see if it was just a bad windows XP installation No luck I m starting to form theories - the virus damaged some hardware and my system is having trouble maintaining windows XP- The virus is still here even after the re-format and re-installations and is causing problems But I never had this problem after removing the viruses only after reinstalling - My Re-installation disc is damaged or had some corrupted files It is from afterall right Please this is the biggest annoyance I ve had to date Is there anything I can do I ve run so many virus scans that I ve been driving myself insane over the past few months Please BC community I really need you guys Thanks so much in advance Edit I forgot to add that the problem is fixed simply by restarting the computer The only reason this is a problem is because when it logs you into the temporary account none of your files are there none of your bookmarks etc And restarting the computer takes much longer than simply logging off and logging into another side

A:"Windows cannot load the locally stored profile." then "Windows cannot find the local profile and is logging you on...

This problem is more serious than you think...since eventually user access could be denied.

Damaged profiles occur routinely...they beoome showstoppers only because users ignore the warnings that are provided...by permitting access via temporary profiles.

Users need to create a new profile...and then transfer settings, etc. from the damaged to the new...in order to overcome a damaged profile.

A:Installed Windows Service Pack 3 Now Windows won't load past Windows Boot Load Screen

Hi sirdanceal0t,
I had a similar problem when Windows XP SP3 was released it was only designed for Intel processors, so if you have a AMD processor it will cause your system not to load, if you are running a AMD processor if i were you try and get back to the System Restore Point or if that fails reimage your pc and just before installing SP3 looks for the patch/fix for your processor model, then install SP3 and it should all be fine.

On the other hand if you have a Intel processor i woulldn't know what to advise.

So after I have prepared the notebook for a user, I normally take a 'windows' image, (backup) before I SOPHOS encrypt. (as I have had this happen before). Since Windows did not load up on this notebook, I have applied the image twice after the notebook fails
to load windows, the third time,  I completely reformatted the drive (erased) and applied the image again. The notebook was working just fine before I applied SOPHOS and run fine before I apply SOPHOS.

Any ideas??

Need help! my old 120 gb hd will not load windows xp. It stalls at the safe mode option page and will not load in safe mode, last known or normally.

I bought new 160 gb hd and tried to install windows xp from original cd, which does work on other computers, but only loads everything and stalls at starting windows.

I also tried to run bart pe from cd but that also stalled at startup.

I'm at a loss. I can't seem to do anything with this pc.

Does any one have suggestions to test further? can it be a memory, video or motherboard problem. All help is greatly appreciated. bob

Welcome to TSG!!

Was it like this from the repair shop? If so, return to them with a request for a fully functioning machine, as you were expecting one after paying them for their services.

If this came about since then, let us know. There are various things to try. (One might be to pop open the case and be sure the cable(s) didn't fall off in transport.) Can you see it in BIOS?

It is that windows 7 has the failure to stop "seeing" my Dvd-rw drive.
This happens after a while, while using the os.
At start up i always check whether it's still connected or not.
After a while like i just mensioned the os stops "seeing" the drive.
I didn't have this problem with vista or xp btw.
And yes my laptop is compatible since i upgraded the RAM.
It's a Acer Aspire 9410.

I have an HP Pavillion a1025cc. Our power flickered last Sunday and this computer decided not to work after that. It would power on go to Windows screen and then we would get a "boot disc error". I ended up getting a new hard drive and installing it. I then used the recovery discs to reload the original software. Everything appeared to go well. Then when I got to the "restart or turn off" choice of the recovery discs, regardless of which option I choose it will not completely load. The farthest I get is to "wait while windows loads" and then I get a flashing cursor on a black screen that will stay on for hours. I put the hard drive in another computer and it worked fine. Any ideas? Thanks in advance for your help.

A:Can not get XP to load on old drive after loading Windows 8

I bought Windows 8 Pro upgrade on disc and tried upgrading from XP on a older computer that I have. XP was originally loaded on a old 250 gig HD and I decided that I wanted Windows 8 to be on a 1 gig HD that I had. So I cloned the 250 gig HD to the 1 gig using dd with a live CD of ubuntu. I then installed 8 onto the 1 gig HD and it worked OK. Windows 8 would load and I could do whatever I wanted but whenever I turned the computer off or reset then it would have errors and I tried fixing by reloading and trying the repair that is on the install DVD but it always failed. Anyways I am giving up on windows 8 and going back to xp, I disconnected the 1 gig drive from the computer internally and tried booting from the old 250 gig drive and I get this error every time: The operating system could not be loaded because a required file is missing or contains errors.File:\\windows\system32\winload.exeerror code 0xc000000e I can then choose to boot with a different operating system by pressing F9. Once I do this then XP loads and everything is just fine until I restart the computer again and I get the same error as above. I just want be able to load directly into XP again. I am not worried about trying to make 8 work for me. Any help would be great.ThanksLoad up the xp recovery disc. you don't have to load 98 first, just run the install on a clean drive and windows will ask you to pop in the 98 disk to verify you are entitled to the h/d.
boot from the xp cd and choose install and let windows do the format when it asks

A:Can't get Windows 7 to find my 2nd hard drive

Welcome to the Seven Forums! sortoffaerygirl

Your problem reminds of what was happening on the last custom case here where one storage kept disappearing while known to be in top working order. The solution was examination of the sata data cable found only slightly lfted up in the port at the board end of it.

The drive was seen in the bios post screen but not even in the Disk Management when it vanished and then returned until going over things like that assuming it could have been a cable gone bad. Sometimes a little dust or dirt will get in there over time from the warm up and cooling off along with the need to clean things up with a can of air cleaner.

First make sure both ends are all the way in. If nothing try another cable to see that's all it is. Generally unless a drive fails completely it's always some little thing like that.

What's going on?
All the other hard drives are fine?

I installed the drivers disk and made the Raid driver required and installed it and got the same result. I can't seem to get the hard drive located to install windows on it.

looking for a solution to get windows installed and up and running. Don't want to spend a large amount of time and money as this is an older desktop. Thanks

A:Windows XP can't find hard drive

Bad hard drive, or bad install.
You are using Service Pack 1. Windows XP only works on the first 133 GB of a hard drive. You may need a Windows Disk with Service pack 2 or 3 to propertly detect and format the hard drive if larger than 132 GB... Or use a non-Dell version of Windows XP.
The product ID on the Windows sticker will still enable the enstall if you have a borrowed OEM disk of Windows XP.

I'm doing a complete install from Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Professional (apparently a simple upgrade isn't possible). But the installation never gets started, because when it asks me to select a drive to install to, the list is blank. It can't find my hard drive, and there's no way to direct it to do so.

This is odd, because Vista has always run perfectly for me, and I've never experienced any issues. All of my Windows updates and drivers are current, Microsoft Security Essentials is disabled, and still Windows 7 can't seem to find my C drive. Any suggestions? Thanks!

A:Windows 7 can't find my hard drive.

Upgrade is possible. Run setup.exe when Vista is up and running. Close all apps including 3rd party firewalls and antivirus before doing so.

Hey guys long time lurker running into a problem which has Cannot Drive Bootable Windows Find me at wit's end This afternoon I put a secondary hard drive into my PC running Windows Ultimate x My goal was to load a friend's Windows Cannot Find Bootable Drive copy of Windows XP onto the drive so he could boot in his PC Everything looked like it worked fine I was able to go through the entire setup process and boot to the desktop without a hiccup I removed the second hard drive from my PC and rebooted Upon restarting my own PC with my hard drive only I ran into an error The system powers on normally until it attempts to load Windows I'm getting an error that's more or less telling me that my computer can't seem to find a bootable drive Windows will not load and I'm forced to restart I've gone into the BIOS it sees the drive there I've ran the windows XP recovery disc and it sees the partition as well I've reset CMOS by pulling the little battery out and replacing it restored BIOS settings to default and disconnected and reconnected almost every piece of hardware I even tried plugging in the drive to another SATA port Still getting the error I'm by no means a professional but I've built a few systems before as well as switched out parts in older PCs for a few years I've never encountered something like this and I'm basically out of ideas Can anyone here offer some insight into this I'm frantically searching for my own Win recovery disc but I've recently moved and I can't seem to find which box it's in I'm hoping there's a solution to this that I'm overlooking somehow Unfortunately I haven't backed up my drive so I would hate to reformat Thanks in advance

Plz help,

I got a virus in my system that has halted my entire system. My laptop wont even start. So i tried to format it with windows 7 (32 bit), the Bootable CD loads fine, but the setup does not shows any partition in my drive.

The error message is no drive found.

I was worried that my hard disk may have crashed, so i started my laptop using ubuntu 9.04 live CD, and it worked.
But I had 3 partitions in my drive...
1. C (primary)
2. D (Documents and imp DATA)
3. E (some other data)
Ubuntu can only detect C: drive, It is unable to mount D or E drive. And i have loads of data, very imp documents and projects in it.

Plz suggest how can i load my windows in my laptop. How can i make my setup detect my drive.

A:Solved: Cant load Windows xp onto new hard drive

XP is too old to natively support SATA drives. But there are workarounds:

Installing XP on a SATA drive
Install Windows XP on SATA without a Floppy
Resolving "Setup did not find any hard disk drives" during Windows XP Installation
"Many newer BIOS allow an Alternate method for SATA . . Go into the BIOS and check the 'Sata Operation' setting, change it to 'Raid Autodetect/ATA' if it is not already. Now try to install XP (Verbiage will vary by manufacturer)" - Courtesy of simpswr.

I am trying to help a friend who purchased a 2nd-hand HP Pavilion DV5 {don't know model} laptop and it came Pre-Loaded with Windows 7 (I think Home Edition). Anyway, someone upgraded it to Win 8 Pro (Urg!) and we are trying to get it restored to the Factory Default but have no disc for either Win 7 or Win 8. Supposedly you should be able to press F11 or Fn-F11 and it will start system recovery but this is not the fact. Can anyone help me to help him get this laptop back to Windows 7/Factory Defaults. Any help would be MOST appreciated. I've been told so many things to try by both HP & Microsoft and nothing is working.

I wouldn't swear to it, but the problem may be related to the fact you didn't backup to an external hard drive.

Also, did you create a system repair disc that you can boot into and restore from it?

that is because windows does not understand the mac os journaled file system you need to go into the mac installer and then when it says to continue or pick disc go into disc utility at the top and format your drive as one partition and pick ms fat as the file system to do it as then in the windows installer you can delete and resize as you need. in the pics in options you want guid not master boot record since its windows 8.

Hi there was wondering if anyone could help me.

I bought a new custom PC from ebay, a shop called FreshTech Solutions, so when it arrived I tried installing Windows 7 Home Premium (came with it). Obviously I need to do a custom install, as I'm not upgrading from anything, but when I get to the screen where it asks where I would like to install Windows 7, nothing is listed. I've tried loading from the disc that came with the motherboard, the Windows 7 CD itself, even the C drive (said it needed to format it, but couldn't).

I don't really know much about custom computers so was wondering if anyone could help me?

I have this - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/140816631147?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649#ht_6177wt_1186

The motherboard is a Gigabyte Z77-DS3H.

Hi and welcome to Bleeping computer.

Please go to the BIOS and see if the hard drive is detected if not please follow the below instructions. In order to go to the BIOS press F2 or del key during startup.

Sometime not often components can get loose during shipping, Make sure the Hard drive is physically in the connector Data and Power.

If you have a anti-static wrist strap please put it on if you don't make sure you are grounded.

1. Open the case
1b. Make sure that your grounded first by touching the chasis or the metal on the power supply
1c. check the connections to the hard drive.

and than try again with the install.

A:How do I load a CD and have it open. I loaded Tur...

Not sure I understand your question 100%.. So i am going to guess at it..  You have installed a CD with your Turbo Tax program and had it install? After the install was done you don't know where to find the installed program or run or is it that it didn't install right so it isn't anywhere on your computer to  I don't know what system your using or what Windows so it is hard to say really how to get there... If it did install. Most times you could find it under your start button and new files installed. At times depending on the software it could be that you would need to find the folder it loaded in to and make a Shortcut to the program to make it run if one wasn't made for you... If you have Win8 or 10 it should be under your new programs. IF a Short cut wasn't made you could click the start button and may have to find it under all apps. Then should be under T for Turbo Tax. Then you can click that folder if it is a folder and then the program should be in there for you to run... Hope this helps someJames

I was thinking of buying a laptop off ebay. If the laptop does not come with a cdrom drive, can I use the cdrom drive in my desktop and somehow hook/interface it with the laptop?

I will only use the cdrom once to load the O/S, and then won't need it anymore, so I was thinking of buying the laptop without it to save money.

The other option is to take the cdrom out of another laptop, and put it in the one without to load the O/S. Are cdrom drives for laptop interchangeable like desktops, or does one brand not necessarily fit in another?

well I had the same problem when I first got a new hard drive, but gave up and used Ubuntu (which is way better I now know). Anyway, now I want to dual boot so I can play games in WIndows. Ubuntu finds the harddrive easily and installs easily, but Windows can't even find the hard drive or anything.

So I used Parted Magic to shrink the Ubuntu partition by about 25GB and created a new primary primary partition.
I have a SATA hard drive with a PCI SATA card
my motherboard is from like 2002 and doesn't have any onboard SATA

halp please

My friend was deleting some files on her PC and now she can't find either the soundcard or DVD drive, the sound card just comes up saying it is Multimedia Audio Controler and that the drivers are not installed but it will not let me find the drivers. Also the PC will not see the DVD drive it just says says "Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)" I've tried trouble shooting but to no avail. The DVD is COMBOIDE5216CO. but we don't know what the soundcard make or model is.

Thanx

A:Can't Find Soundcard And Dvd/cdrom

Welcome to BC
If we know the make and model of the computer, we can hook you up to the driver. The DVD should be plug n play. Simply remove it in Device Manager and reboot. Windows should redetect it

Hi, my friend is having some problems with her laptop and I haven't been able to help.

XP takes about 7-8 minutes to load and when it has loaded it is slow and laggy when trying to run anything. CPU usage is jumping to between 30 and 50% every 5-10 seconds. The processes doing this are all HP system tray processes and it varies which one jumps in CPU usage.

I was wondering if anyone has any advice on what may be causing this and how we can fix it. I have attached the hijackthis log from her laptop.

Thanks, Harry.

Long story short:

Had issues with Windows Update (would not download/install properly), then one day last week, system restarted and now Windows will not load. Safe mode, normal mode, recovery mode all do not work - they just result in a black or blue screen with a visible cursor. To make matters worse, booted in startup check mode and performed a hard drive test which resulted in the following message: "failed - replace hard disk 1 (warranty TD - error code 10008). What are my options? My main focus is to recover my personal files. Thanks in advance!

A:OS will not load after Windows Update; hard drive failure message

Welcome
Ill give it to your straight. Sounds like a hardware problem, specifically harddrive.
If it is the hard drive you may have lost everything already. If hardware, excluding harddrive, your worst case scenario, you can take the hard drive and access with another computer. If it is not a hardware, but rather a software problem, back up your stuff with this procedure

My cdrom drives are not recognized by the system. I have uninstalled and reinstalled numerous times and they seem to install correctly. There are no hardware conflicts. Purchased and ran registry fix and still no luck. Anybody got a clue?

Hi all...
Searched here and in Win95 nad didn't find an issue quite like mine.

Had a new hard drive installed a couple days ago. (I had the tech remove the old drive.)

Now I'm stuck, because I'm not DOS-literate enough to load my (existing/internal) CDRom software so that I may load Win95 (on CDr).

The new drive is partioned; tech told me to load all of my programs onto C, work in D.

I also have Zip Drive (100mb), Canon scanner and Epson printer.

If I had *step-by-step* DOS instruction for getting the CD software properly loaded I'd be capable of completing the job.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

I know that this issue has been around since the dawn of time, but when you insert an cd/dvd into your drive in windows, you always get that brief system pause while the drive is loading...Is there any way around this or is it inevitable?
