I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Before trying to troubleshoot this, if you are connecting to your wireless network with the laptop why not just connect to it with the phone?

I have the Toshiba Satellite L850 Laptop and have been using the wireless without any issues. Now I find I cannot get the LAN to work. I have tried disabling the wifi and enabling the realtech PCIe family controller, which is the LAN connection, but I keep getting unidentified network. Is there some sort of confliction between the wifi even though it is disabled and the LAN connection. I am tearing my hair out. The LAN worked fine before I decided to try the WIFI.

Hello and welcome Exfso mate can you tell me what the PART No. is on the bottom of that machine?

It is the label which says what model machine it is and then that number, and is usually near the Microsoft licence sticker. If you cannot find it run Speccy Speccy - Download and as in my pic it will show the machine part number - (that one circled is mine) it is necessary because it relates to where the machine was made or meant for distribution.
I need that to look for drivers as I think you may have a drivers problem.

Some other things you can run too are

Okay. I have two computers, a laptop connected to my router thats in another room via WiFi and a desktop in the same room as the laptop, with no wifi.

I am trying to share the WiFi through the laptop so that i dont need to purchase a Wifi card for the desktop. The problem is, that when i connect the two computers together with a crossover cable, and set both computers IPv4's to obtain IP and DNS automatically, i get an unidentified network. The desktop cannot access the net.

Both computers have been set to the same workgroup and i have also tried manually assigning IPv4 addresses and DNS's to no success.

I've Unidentified network home with Wifi internet only read countless threads here and elsewhere but have found nothing that really describes my problem First of all some background I live on a boat and the only available Internet connection is by Wifi There are no landline or cable connections available I have two Toshiba laptops one running Pro and one running Pro They are networked by direct ethernet cable connection The network works fine once you get past the unidentified public network to unidentified home network And I Unidentified home network with Wifi only internet can connect to the Internet by Wifi from either laptop or both at once DHCP is enabled on both adapters I have tried with no success and considerable frustration to make my Unidentified home network with Wifi only internet home network quot identifiable quot so I don't have to reset the network location on both machines anytime there is a break in the connection eg restart shutdown Everything I have tried that makes the home network identified though has kept me from connecting to the Internet by Wifi It appears to me that once the home network is identified specific DNS valid IPs that Windows wants to connect the network rather than the individual laptops to the Internet and so though I can connect to the Wifi network itself and it says I have Internet access I'm quot invisible quot evidently no gateway to the Wifi ISP I have worked manually through Properties of the adapters and have tried a wired only router Trendnet TW -S W CA also a Network switch which didn't solve the unidentified problem When using the router as soon as I unplug from it I have Internet connectivity by Wifi without having to reconnect The only thing I haven't tried is using ICS as I'm not sure how vulnerable I would be on the Wifi I hope I've presented the problem clearly but I'll try to put it more basically Is there a way to use a wired router with no Internet connection to create a home network and still be able to connect to the Internet by Wifi

It seems you can't get an IP address from the router DHCP server. Did you try factory resetting the router (not just power cycling)?

Also, Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 12-34-56-78-90-AB for onboard LAN I believe. Did you change the MAC address manually before?

A:Unidentified Network/valid IP configuration: both Ethernet and WiFi

When you see your IP address in the 169.254.xxx.xxx range that means you are not getting a DNS from your router. Try to turn your router off for about 15 seconds and then turn it back on and see if that helps.

You may have to restart your computer also.

Almost always it's best to get the latest driver from the laptop manufacturer's web site for an integrated adapter, otherwise from the adapter manufacturer's web site. But sometimes, as you say, you get lucky and whatever Windows finds works.

You can mark this solved using the button at the upper left of the page.

Good afternoon I'm hoping that someone may be able to help me with an unusual issue I am experiencing We have a swapping ethernet/wifi Network" between "Unidentified number of different laptops running Windows and all have the same issue The very first time a laptop is connected to the company network via Ethernet or WiFi lets assume we have connected by WiFi you receive the prompt to choose a network location After selecting swapping between ethernet/wifi "Unidentified Network" quot work quot the laptop can connect to the domain and everything works as expected Now if the WiFi on the laptop is switched off and the user try's to swapping between ethernet/wifi "Unidentified Network" use the Ethernet connection the Ethernet adapter reports a quot Unidentified Network quot The only way to get the Ethernet adapter to discover the domain is swapping between ethernet/wifi "Unidentified Network" to disable the WiFi adapter completely which our users cannot do as they do not have Admin permissions on our systems Anyone had and similar issues or heard of anything like this Any help would be gratefully received

A:swapping between ethernet/wifi "Unidentified Network"

I suspect but this may be dependent on the hardware/firmware in the laptops that they are only able to use a single adaptor, in other words they don't have dual port capabilities, sometimes if they have a power save active it will only allow 1 port, you really need to check the laptop model specs.
Have you tried to plug in and connect with a Ethernet and once you have established a connection try the wifi link,
As for not having permission can your IT not allow that specific permission.

Hi, I would like to upgrade this laptop Wifi Card and was wondering if it will work, the service manual seems to have to antenna connections, but I am not sure if the laptop motherboard would be compatible with this card. Thanks for your input

A:Intel Network 7260.HMWG.R Revised WiFi Wireless-AC 7260 H/T ...

You have an AMD processor which does not work right with the Intel wifi cards. The one you want to use is the Broadcom AzureWave 802.11ac. However, your laptop might only have one wireless antenna in which case you cannot really upgrade the internal wireless card.  You said you have the Service Manual so I will not post it. The only way to know if it has one wireless antenna or 2 is to disasssemble it far enough to inspect. The manual might show 2 antennae, but many models and particularly AMD models with 802.11/b/g/n/ cards like Realtek and Ralink only have one.  If you need more help post back.

Is there anything I can do? I can probably try attaching an diagnostic report thingy from Windows Diagnostics if anyone finds it helpful.

A:All Wifi connections are unidentified

zchen, there are several possible causes, so there are several possible explanations.

Does everyone else' wireless work?

Your keyboard has a picture of a wireless antenna, usually on the F3 key. Press that and Fn to make sure you didn't accidentally turn your WiFi off.

In Network and Internet, make sure that Airplane Mode is turned off.

Try System Restore.

If none of these ideas work, come back and we'll try again.

Have you tried an image restore for that computer you are having problems with or doing a re-installation of operating system? Save any data you might need from that computer before doing this.

I've freshly installed Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bit on my system that previously had Ubuntu installed, and prior to ubuntu had win7 ultimate installed. With the fresh install of win7, I receive an unidentified network/no network access issue.

Heres a list of things ive tried:

- reset the network adapter
- restarted the modem and the router
- messed around with homegroup
- reset tcp/ip
- tried connecting to a specific ip/dns/default gateway (which i retrieved with a laptop)
- ip /release /renew although i wasnt successful

Ive tried almost every single thing I could find on google. Nothing works. I connect fine on ubuntu and I connected fine on ultimate.

I havent tried installing drivers though. Because I cannot access the internet on that machine to install those drivers. Help is much much appreciated as I am tired of ubuntu.

Thanks,

j

A:Fresh install of Win7 *unidentified network/no network access*

Welcome to the forums bietzshe,

I don't know much about 7 Enterprise, but I imagine you would need to install the Lan/Network drivers for your Motherboard.
Is your motherboard the P67 FTW? Do you have a driver CD for it? If not then you will need to head over to EVGA - EVGA Download Center find your motherboard from the drop down list and download and install the Network driver there.

Hello all,
I have tried all the similar solutions to my problem but non eworks.

I have just installed WIndows 7 Home 64bit.
Wireless works (slooooooow).
The cable from my Billion router/modem is recognised but does not work.

In network and sharing centre I can see Wireless as Home Network and cable as:

Unidentified network - Public Network (no link = can't change it).
The 4 TCP/IPv4 is set at automatic. Even if I put the Billion default address 192.168.1.254 and subnet and gateway nothing.

Tried going into ipconfig and it gives me a 169.254.176.23 (=no internet connection then, but I knew that).

The wireless IP is correct at 192.168.1.2

From what I have understood from all the fora I have to change the network from Public to Home.

How do I do it?

I would be very grateful for any sort of help.

For some time now my internet would be fine for 1hour after booting up my computer and then the network would then fail to be recognized. I have followed multiple tutorials on the internet, with countless suggestions, where other people have had the same problem. Some seem to fix the problem for a short time and then it comes back a week later.

Currently I am having to use my phone to connect to the internet.

Any changes I have made to try and fix it I have reversed. Except when I formatted my PC to try and fix it but again was only temp fix.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Willing to remote if needed but do not know how good the connection would be through my phone.

Many Thanks

A:Unidentified Network; No Network Access - Powerline Adapters

The router itself would present you with a new Local Area IP, thus the prefix of 192.168.0.*, so I can almost guarantee that it's not your computer acting up. Personally, I'm not too sure on why or how it gave your computer the middle-finger, but it seems to be the culprit..

I'd try resetting your router back to Factory Default settings (Unplug its power source for about 5-10 minutes), plugging everything back in, and seeing how it goes from there.

EDIT::

Also, when you get the chance, I'd check to see if there are any available firmware updates for your router... just saying. Hope all is well mate.

Hi everyone quick story to detail my exact problem though this thread showed the same problem with no working solution for me I installed Win on a separate partition use Win Ultimate x normally and was using it It worked fine I connected my iPhone to charge it when the phone automatically activated a tethering app This instantly switched my wired network connection to the USB connection which I immediately disabled As soon as I did that my wired connection my hard wire internet not the tethered iPhone connection stopped working and showed the network only as quot Unidentified network Thus the error Now I followed all of the instructions in the previously linked thread I even reformatted my hard drive to for Unidentified network home error Network no avail Microsoft support wants me to pay not gonna happen Furthermore I know it isn't a router or actual network issue because my desktop is the only machine with that problem My xbox was streaming TV over the same network when it all occurred and Unidentified Network error for home network it is doing so as I type this I switched the cables obviously rebooted multiple time the whole nine yards What makes it worse is every time I try to diagnose the problem Windows just tells me to reset my router I even tried that but obviously it didn't work After every reboot my IP changes back to a address Every time I manually set it no change It seems like no matter what I do it won't get fixed The only thing Microsoft support said I should do is search for updated drivers for my NIC This shouldn't be necessary since I reformatted once before and I didn't need to update my drivers to access the internet I'm about a day away from just scrapping the whole thing for parts Any help is greatly appreciated

A:Unidentified Network error for home network

It sounds like your machine is having a hard time picking up the router. The 169 address is what you get when the router isn't being picked up by the machine. It's like a generic IP that Msoft uses when nothing is available.

You also take your chances plugging anything Apple into a Windows PC, seems to be when the problem started. That is what the entire Bonjour fiasco is about.

Have you tried updating the firmware on your router because something doesn't seem right there.

Updating the drivers might also be good advice. You haven't listed any system specs so I can't do that for you.

If all else fails you could try typing your default gateway from your router into your IPv4 settings window. The link below shows you how.

Ive just installed W7 7600 HP on to one of our work PC's and it says its connected to an unidentified network. I cant change it to work network or even Home network but the strange thing is its working fine. All our other PC's can see it and share files on it etc and i have internet access on it.
This is the second time ive installed HP and the second time this has happened. In the past ive been using Ultimate and this didn't happen.
We use static IP addresses for our internal network with no DNS server.

Anyone got any ideas how i can change this network location. Im using HP as im testing it out for when my copy arrives in Oct but if this is a problem related to HP i might think again.

Cheers.

In both cases typing in the default gateway resolved the issue as described in the link.

Hi everyone

I have recently installed windows 7 (64) and wanted to put more RAM in. I started off with 2Gb and added 1 Gb of ram to make 3Gb (No problems Here). I then added another 2Gb of ram bringing it up to 5 Gb (Now the fun begins!)

Windows 7 runs fine and I can play games with the 5Gb...but... I can't seen to get on the internet! It comes up saying unidentified network! I take out the 2Gb and everything is ok again and i can get back online and everything.

I was told to make sure all my drivers are updated which I did and they are all up to date.

Please help, does anyone have any answers??

Hello,

I have a BT modem which incorporates a wireless modem and 4 switches for hardwiring via ethernet.

I have had to set up a long ethernet cable because the wireless signal does not reach. The ethernet cable is less than 100 m. (About 30m).

I know that the ethernet cable works properly. I know that the modem receives the internet becasue I can connect to it wirelessly via another computer (laptop).

I also know that the wireless modem requires a password.

When I connect with the ethernet cable and bring up 'Network and Sharing Centre'. I find that I get 'Unidentified Network' (Public Network). When I try repairing with Windows Network Diagnostics this does not solve the problem.

Any ideas?

Nevica

A:'Unidentified Network' in Network and Sharing Centre

If you are trying to setup a Wireless connection then the logon name and password must be EXACTLY the same as the original setup.
If you can position the receiver( the comp) close to the sender( router/modem) then when it is up and running you will be able to see how strong the signal is. Then when you move the comp to where it is going to be used you will see how much drop off you are getting. If you are getting substantial drop of in signal strength then look around for how to improve the signal .
NB. Signal strength can be affected by moving the Modem as little as 25mm.

I got help to a BSOD problem in the crashes and bugs forum. Impressed with the help i received i was hoping to get help for a network issue ive had for a while.

I am using a cablet connection with my Zyxcel P2602 HWT modem. The modem/router is provided by my internet provider. It also supports a wireless connection.

When i start my computer both the connections is fine. After a while though the cabled connection is said to be unidentified. It works as a local connection, but has no internet access. When i run the diagnoses for the connection it again recognize the network and its working fine for a while until the same happens.

I tried upgrading the driver without luck. The version now says Atheros AR8121/AR88113/AR88114 PCI-E ethernet Controller (NDIS6.20
Driver date: 11.06.2009

If there is information needed ill be happy to provide.

A:Network problem - Unidentified cabled Network

Hello DonkrDjay, welcome to SF!

As a test, can you check what IP number your router gives you (through its DHCP server i hope) when it works well?
Then when it stops working... is it still the same or did you get a totally different IP for your PC?

Second, if posible, could you post snips of your router DHCP settings?

Hello there; My windows 7 computer was connected to my home's wireless network yesterday perfectly normally. I drove last night to my mother's house and proceeded to connect to her own wifi router wirelessly. Although my sister's computer that's on windows 7 connects ably, and both our iPhones connect, my computer will not. My computer finds the network( it is unsecured without a password if that makes a difference ) connects, receives an ipv4 address in ipconfig, yet does not obtain Internet access. It labels the network as an "unidentified network". If you do know how to fix this problem, please let me know; I will be forever in your debt.

Ipconfig /release tells me "The operation failed as no adapter is in the state permissible for this operation." Despite having run CMD as an administrator.

A:Unidentified Network Error on working network

You just need to re-identify the network with windows.

Last time you may have checked the bx at the bottom by mistake.

Hi. this site had a post of a similar problem, but the suggestion did not fix my problem. So, I thought I might post my problem specifically and see if anyone has any suggestions.
I have 2 different laptops. both running Windows7 and connecting to the internet wirelessly. within a few days of each other they both began to display "Currently connected to: Unidentified network No network access" and they will not let me get on the internet. It is not my router becuase It shows the same thing no matter where I try to connect. I have tried my gym and a local restaurant that I have always had success connecting to before. Furthermore my WindowsXP desktop is directly connected and is connecting to the internet without any problems. My laptops are both running AVG for antivirus. Any ideas?

On my laptop I just noticed this appearing when I hover over the Wifi bar indicator in the right hand corner.

I have no way of deleting this connection, I also don't need it nor do I know how it got their in the first place. It also shows up as a Public network. Furthermore, in Network Connections it shows up as TAP - Windows Adapter V9. I can't delete it but I can disable it.

There is no option to remove from the Network and Sharing Centre. Any suggestions on how to delete/remove?

Thanks

Ive been Unidentified Network through many of the posts on here about the Unidentified network error Ok first I am using a computer that has Win Ultimate Bit installed It has an Intel Network Adapter and I Unidentified Network am connecting it wired to a Netgear WPN v Yes both of these have the most recent firmware and it didnt work before I upgraded the firmware on both Prior to using this Netgear Unidentified Network I had been using a Netgear WNR but we were having issues with the wireless on that router where it would just completely stop Ok this is where it gets Unidentified Network complicated I am too far from the modem to connect directly to it This was not the case hours ago when I was plugged into the WNR The computer was moved across the house and most of the network has been changed Windows Update also installed a bunch of updates right when I shut it down to move the PC but I have uninstalled all of them and it didnt change anything The room with the modem has a DLink DI- Everything connected to that router works fine including the Netgear WPN v The Netgear WPN v has a computer with XP on it connected to it and it is running perfectly I can also plug my laptop into it and it works fine and also the wireless on it functions great I need to use both these routers right now because I have that many wired devices that I need all the ports Ive tried setting up a static IP as well as letting the router assign one and I can't get anything either way I can not even get into the router settings or anything else on the network A ipconfig all shows that the default gateway is blank so I put the proper address for the gateway in and it comes up in ipconfig but I still have no connectivity I originally thought the cable had something to do with it so I bought a new one and there was no change I am completely lost here if anyone has any other ideas please help thank you In short I think Ive tried all the most common fixes and I still have made no progress whatsoever

A:Unidentified Network

The easiest way to fix this problem is to replace one of your routers with a switch. The way you have it now your routers will be fighting over which default gateway to use and it ends up creating a big networking mess.

It's not meant to work that way which is why that set up isn't working for you. There are ways to use a router as a switch but it's not considered to be a reliable set up,...it's just not meant to work like that, you would much better off just purchasing a switch.

Switches are cheap and easy to set up, just plug it in to one of the routers ports and plug your other machines into the switch. Your unidentified network problem will most likely just go away once you remove the extra router and install a switch.

If you really want to save the money for the new switch or just like to mess with networks you can use the instuctions below to set up a dual router network.

Installing a router to work as the second one on a home network requires special configuration. Do the following on the second router to ensure it (and the devices attached) function properly: 1. Connect as local device or bridge - If connecting the second router via Ethernet cable, plug it into one of the LAN ports on the first router. If connecting the second router wirelessly, ensure the second router is set for client mode. Note that some home wireless routers do not support client mode; these must be connected by cable. Check your router documentation for details on its client mode configuration support.

2. Check / change IP address - Most home network routers use a default IP address setting. Often, these default IP addresses will not work in a two router environment. Check the second router's IP address value and reset it if necessary to work within the valid address range of the first router (and to not conflict with any other device on the network).

3. Disable DHCP - To avoid IP address conflicts between all of the devices on the home network, only one of your two routers should assign addresses via DHCP. All mainstream routers provide an option to disable DHCP as part of the router's configuration screens.

Instead of adding a second wired router to an existing network, consider adding a network switch instead. A switch accomplishes the same goal of extending the size of a network, but it does not require any IP address or DHCP configuration, greatly simplifying configuration.

If you are still seeing the problem with the Unidentified network you can use the procedure in the link below to fix that problem.

Hi,
I'm on Windows 7 32 bit.
2 network card in your PC. One of them stuck on the Internet, to another on the Xbox 360. The internet is working but the Xbox 360 Amra it says: Unidentified network. Swap the cables, even if it is the same. If it flips to that which you can plug it into your internet does not work. Would be very important. THX in advance.

PS: Sorry for my bad Angol, it's not my native tongue.

A:Unidentified network. HELP ME!

It sounds in essence that you are basicly creating an ad hoc network using your second NIC with your Xbox. First be aware, depending upon the NIC(s) on both devices, older cards do not support auto midx (automatically crossing over a straight cat 5) so a cross over cable may be required. Other wise read this article Using ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) it's a vista walkthrough but the technique is the same. And also since it is an ad hoc network please read the three caveats regarding ics and ad hoc networks at the bottom of the article.
Hope this helps.

Not normal.

For some reason your router is not assigning an ip address to your computer. You may need to set a static ip address.

What kind of router do you use? Depending on the brand, the ip may be either 196.168.1.xxx or 192.168.0.xxx.

How to Assign Your Computer a Static IP Address in Windows 7 | eHow.com

Also, try plugging the ethernet cable into the other ethernet port on your computer since you have more than one.

Your network configuration looks ok. Usually when you can connect with the router and not the internet is because DNS is not working. Try rebooting your router.

Hi! I recently purchased a Linksys E3000 router for my network. Every computer works perfectly, except for a Vista Business 64bit Laptop.

I have the dreaded "Unidentified Network" problem - I have "local only" access but no Internet. I've Googled this extensively and found a variety of solutions, such as disabling IPv6, but none of them worked. I'm at my wit's end here (my free tech support has expired from microsoft) and I hope that someone here can lend a hand. It would be much appreciated.

Signal strength is not a problem, BTW.

Thanks!

The 169.254.173.01 is a local IP (of course).

I am thinking the most obvious which is driver.

Can you look in device manager to see if it is there and working.

Please go to start>search>type device manager.
Are there any "unknown devices" with yellow triangles on them?
Is you driver there , listed, and working?

If your driver is missing, or there is a yellow triangle on it, you will need to update it.

"Unidentified Network" pops up just under my regular connection (which works fine). When I pull up all local sites (outside users), they each have a name and appear ok. This "UFO" never seems to interfere with my regular connection. It could be hacking, but somehow, that just doesn't add up.

To cut a long post short bluegirl I am assuming you are trying to wifi the computer?? and you can only connect via Ethernet cable?

I cannot find the drivers for the WLAN for 7 in the HP site only it is telling me that drivers are downloaded via Windows Updates in 10. So where exactly are you getting your drivers from?? The Windows feature via control Panel in my mind is weak at best so you need to go to the HP site.

An option is go here and ask Home - HP Support Forum

You will need to describe a little more than that. Like your wireless router setup. How does your wireless normally work? Do you have an internet light blinking on your wireless router? How about your modem? Did you try connecting to your ssid?

I am running Vista Home Premium SP2 on a Dell XPS420. it is on a home network consisting of multiple laptops running Win8. Most times when the Vista computer boots up, it connects to an "Unidentified Network" with no internet connection. I can get it to connect to the internet by:
1. disabling the LAN connection
2. Manage network connections
3. enable the LAN connection.

How can I get the Vista computer to connect automatically to the correct LAN connection?

A:Unidentified Network

I'll venture into this but recognize I don't know that much about it.

Did you share the Vista computer with the Win 8 machines using the same Workgroup?

Everytime i resume from standby i get a short delay (20-30 seconds) while my pc reconnects to my wireless network but get 'unidentified network' on the network icon in the system tray. I am able to connect to my network & use the internet but its like it doesnt fully recognise my network.

Is there any way to have vista reconnect quicker to my network after resuming from sleep mode? It connects instantly when i logon after a reboot but not when resuming from sleep/hibernate.

*EDIT*

Problem solved, i disabled the IP helper service which prevented windows from displaying my network info properly.

ipconfig /all
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post results here

We would like to see the results from ipconfig /all post back the results in a reply here

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD then press Enter to open a command prompt box (A new dialogue box - black with white font, will appear on screen ):

In the command prompt window that opens, type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

ipconfig /all > network.txt & network.txt

It will export the results to notepad and then automatically open notepad.

Now all you need to do is copy and paste those results to a reply here
to do that:
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Select all
all the text will be highlighted
Next
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Copy
Now go back to the forum - reply and then right click in the reply box and paste

Hi I am in Australia and have a non-tech savvy friend in Network Unidentified the Philippines with a curious network problem on her new Windows starter netbook It is giving an unidentified network error when she attempts to connect using her fixed wireless connection The error fault is the same at her aunts house but when she physically visited her ISP SmartBro the laptop happily connected ostensibly using the same type of connection I have yet to confirm with the ISP that the equipment they Unidentified Network used to test her machine is the same as they have supplied to the two houses but Unidentified Network assuming it is I am puzzled by the problem because - her old desktop running XP is happily using the connection at her aunt's house and her old laptop also running XP will happily use the connection at her own house but the old Dell laptop has a video chip problem - hence the need for the new machine The netbook would happily connect to wi-fi in the shop she bought it from but there is no wi-fi hotspot within range of her house so this is not a viable alternative The only conclusion that I can come to is that the equipment supplied to clients is different from that used to test at the ISP and that it is in some way not compatible with Windows starter edition So far the ISP has been of very limited assistance and with only SMS contact between me and my friend checking settings drivers and the like makes solving this problem quite difficult Sorry for the long explanation - Any ideas would be very welcome solving this

It would probably be more help to your friend if you asked her to join the forum herself, trying to fix a problem like this through a third party could prove difficult and time consuming.

It doesn't matter that she is not techy as the experts here will help her to get the machine online without baffling her with technical jargon.

If she doesn't want to join and you still want to try and help can you post back with all the details about the equipment she has, make model etc: and I'm sure there will be someone around who can help you both.

Ok so i have looked at a lot of other threads about the unidentified network thing and the main thing about those other threads is that network??? Unidentified they revolve around wireless connections which doesn't help me Plus i'm not sure if that has any relevance setup I have an HP touchsmart desktop with windows vista home premium i don't think all the spec are necessary if so please let me know problem A few weeks ago i was able to connect to the internet and then out of nowhere the computer tells me that it is connected to an unidentified network and won't connect to the internet Unidentified network??? at all It is connected via ethernet cable I have enabled and disabled the drivers as well as firewall gone through the updates did roll backs tried a system restore and reset both the modem and the computer and so far nothing has worked Oh and i have tried letting the computer diagnose and repair and i get a notice that says that the network adapter is experiencing driver or hardware issues with some options if necessary i can provide a screen shot thoughts There cant be anything wrong with the modem due to the fact that I have laptops connected wirelessly and they work perfectly fine which is also how I am posting this thread I didn't install or remove any programs before the problem started so I don't think i have to worry about anything like that question So after all that can someone please tell me what i am missing Could the ethernet card in the computer be the problem Any thoughts on the situation would be helpfull

It looks like you are already running the latest driver for the Atheros AR8161 which is the NDIS 6.30 > Microsoft Update Catalog

When the connection is down I'm seeing the typical > Autoconfiguration IPv4 Address. . : 169.254.28.196(Preferred) Which basically means it's seeing the router but is having a problem staying connected to it. Many changes in the network stack and how DNS is acquired so firmware updates are typically required here.

Which make/model router are you using for this connection?

any idea what could be causing my computer to randomly have an unidentified network error? worked fine as of 2am last night, turned it on this morning and after an update it wouldnt connect to the internet. ive tried restoring it to before the update, even restoring it from days ago, releasing and renewing my ip with cmd and tried resetting it with the netsh int ip reset prompt too, updating the drivers, installing the tcp/ipv4 reliable multicast protocol, even found a few known problems with bonjour and mcafee but disabled the services which did nothing and eventually just removed them from my pc. nothing seems to help. its hardwired to the modem but the computers connected with wifi still work fine.

No. Let's regain network access, and then please explain this in more detail.

I'm assuming a Windows version more recent than XP ...

Uninstall McAfee and run the Removal Tool. You can reinstall it, if desired, after regaining network access.

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Vista and 7 and 8.

Start - All Programs - Accessories and right click on Command Prompt, select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt. [For Windows 8: <Windows Logo> + x - Command Prompt(Admin)]

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reset IPv4 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log

can we see an xirrus screen shot
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Run Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector
Download and install
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to copy the program across to the faulty PC
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file and install the program.
You will now need to take a screen shot and copy that back to the working PC and attach the screen shot in a reply on the forum here.

If you do not have another PC - do you have a phone connected to the internet - can you photograph the result and post the image in a reply

http://www.xirrus.com/Products/Wi-Fi-Inspector.aspx ( the site now appears to require a business email, so try the direct link below)
Direct link to the program is here http://info.xirrus.com/Wi-FiInspectorConfirmation.html

{If the above link does not work heres alternative links

http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_download/fid,77196-order,4/download.html

http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/Xirrus-Wi-Fi-Monitor-Download-99109.html

http://download.cnet.com/Xirrus-Wi-Fi-Inspector/3000-18508_4-75758254.html}

Then run and install the program - on a wireless enabled PC/Laptop
if you get an error - You need will need to have NET Framework installed for the WiFi Inspector to function.
On windows 8 - (i do not have windows 8) but, it would appear that, When you first try to run, you may get a message that .net framework is needed, and included in that message is a link to download/install.

Run the program

A user guide is available here http://www.xirrus.com/cdn/pdf/Xirrus-Wi-Fi-inspectorguide-1-2-1-RevB-6.aspx

post a screen shot of the program running.
if there are a lot of networks showing can you click on "networks" top lefthand area - so we can see all the network information.

post which SSID name is yours, its located in the list, under network "Adapter Name" (1st column)
Note:
For a reliable (or robust as the Xirrus user guide says) wireless connection you need a signal of about -70 dBm or better. "A desirable signal level for a robust Wi-Fi connection will be green".
note: the signal level is a negative number, so for example -88 is worst and -40 is better

To post a screen shot of the active window.

Windows XP
Hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application (Start> All Programs> Accessories> Paint) and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file.

Vista or Windows 7
you can use the "snipping tool" which is found in Start> All programs> Accessories> Snipping Tool
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/how-to-use-the-windows-snipping-tool/

Windows 8
you can use the snipping tool > Open Snipping Tool (From the Windows 8 Start Screen, type "snip" and press enter.
>Press the Esc. key.
>go back to your Windows 8 start screen - Swipe from left or press Window Button
>Press Ctrl+PrntScr button to use Snipping Tool

Hi,
I Just installed Vista x86 on an old machine and am unable to connect to the internet or connect to my home network.
I have the latest drivers for the ethernet Adaptor.
I tried to uncheck ipv6 with no success.
Loaded protocols to both ipv4 and ipv6
Turned on all network options except password protection.
IPV4 and IPV6 are set to obtain IP Address,DNS etc automatically.
I havent looked for bonjour but would it come with a fresh install?

When i do IPconfig/all (i'll try to copy and post it on this machine later)
It shows no default gateway, dhcp off.
IP starts with 169.xx so i take it that the router isnt providing an IP address.

Any help would be appreciated

Hey there monitar,

Your router may need to be reset. You should be able to hold down a little button to reset it. This way, it will hopefully reset whatever setting is stopping it

Let us know,
Ben

We have a netgear modern router model CDG N We were able to have three computers and an ipad connected wirelessly as well as the PS through Ethernet with no issues As soon as we connected the Xbox we had problems and needed to change the NAT settings Since then whenever the computers try to connect it comes up as an Unidentified Network All other devices can connect and have internet access as long as I keep the NAT open I have tried many different things to fix it Eventually I worked out how to set network Unidentified up the different devices with specific IP addresses and this allowed my computer to connect to the network and the router However I still do not get Internet access I am able to connect to the router s configuration page and I can ping the router with the information sent and received I can t ping a web site I have tried calling my ISP and they have said it is a computer issue and referred me to a technician But how can it be a computer issue if the same thing happens with all computers I have tried the following changing to a specific IP address Turning NAT on and off Connecting through the LAN cable But none of these get me Internet access Does anyone have any ideas It is driving me crazy Unidentified network Thanks I hope it all makes sense Unidentified network nbsp

My internet is not working. I have a wired ethernet cable and when plugged in, only the green light is on, the orange light does not blink. and it shows that it is an UNIDENTIFIED NETWORK. though the same ethernet cable when plugged in another laptop shows the same, but it also has another homegroup network through which connection is accessible.

I have tried to solve this problem on my laptop through various methods like detection of problems in the network adapter, driver etc.

It keeps showing that there is some problem in the "Local Area connection Driver" and sometimes shows that there is some problem in the local area connection adapter. Ive tried updating the driver and the adapter. Please help me solve this issue.

What is listed in Device Manager under Network Adapters?

What, if any, warnings or errors are anywhere in Device Manager?

Start, Run, CMD, OK to open a command prompt:
(For Vista or 7 type CMD in the Search box after Start)

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

Click that "Change adapter settings" on the left side. Then Disable and Enable (Reset) whichever adapter you are using ( Wireless/ Wifi or Ethernet/ LAN). Then restart your PC.

I have a HP desktop with windows vista and a wireless internet adapter. We have one other computer in our house which has the router. I have successfully installed the driver and it recognizes our household network. The thing is, I cannot successfully connect to it. It shows the signal is excellent but the network is still showing that it is unidentified. I am pretty sure that I know the WEP( i have entered it but nothing is really happening)im still not sure what to do or if if I have the right settings. I am not an expert at computers, so I would appreciate if someone could help me.

The following was put together mostly by etaf with a little help from me.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Atheros Wireless Adapter - AR5007EG & AR5007
Over the last three or so years we have been seeing a lot of problems with the above adapters, mainly concerning WPA and WPA2 encryption and mainly on windows Vista.
We have seen just a couple of issues on other windows operating system, windows XP and windows 7.

Windows XP:- A driver update has resolved the issue
Windows 7 :- No conclusive results for a fix

The wireless adapter gets an IP configuration, and shows as connected, but communication is non-existent or sporadic.

Log into the Router and disable the wireless security and see if you are now able to connect to the internet and surf OK.
Please post back a reply here, and let us know if that works or does not work.
If you post back the make and exact model of the router - we can advise how to disable the wireless security

Here are a number of possible solutions

--- 1) In Device Manager right click on the wireless adapter and "update driver."

--- 2) Download and install the latest wireless driver from your laptop manufacturer's web site support section,

If you post a reply here with the Make and EXACT model of your PC, along with the windows version you are running. we will see if we can find a link to the driver and will post a reply with the link here.

--- 3) On one occasion re-setting the router back to factory default and re-configuring the router settings has resolved the issue

--- 4) The majority of members, have now used the drivers from the atheros driver site, which has resolved the issue.
- see below for direct links for windows vista and the link for all Atheros adapters and supported operating systems
AR5007
Vista 32 / 64 Bit
Direct link Drivers for Atheros AR5007 and Windows Vista 32 / 64 bit
You only need to click on the green download button labelled " Click to Download " and wait, the file will download - you do not need to click on any other buttons to get the download started
AR5007EG
Vista 32 / 64 Bit
Direct link Drivers for Atheros AR5007EG and Windows Vista 32 / 64 bit
You only need to click on the green download button labelled " Click to Download " and wait, the file will download - you do not need to click on any other buttons to get the download started
Drivers for the other windows operating system
http://www.atheros.cz/atheros-wireless-drivers.php
You need to look down the page for your particular adapter model and then look across the columns to find your windows version.
Now click on the blue tick mark in the column under your windows version.
This will open another page for that particular adapter and that windows version.

Now click on the download button labelled " Click to Download " and wait, the file will download - you do not need to click on any other buttons to get the download started

Assuming that after all the above the wireless still does not connect to the internet, all I can suggest is to use wireless security of WEP or to get an external USB wireless card.

unidentified network if wireless means a network with no SSID or Windows can not determine the SSID. Are you trying to connect your wifi router or someone elses?

Please supply the following info, exact models of the equipment please.

Make/model of the broadband modem.
Make/model of the router
Connection type, wired, wireless.

Have you connected a single computer to the modem to see if the problem still occurs without the router in the picture? Have you upgraded the router to the latest firmware? Have you done a factory reset and reconfiguration of the router?
