Best WiFi Router For Home Network

Q: Best WiFi Router For Home Network

I'd like to add a new 802.11n WiFi router to my home network, one that comes with parental controls build into the router.

Just wondering if someone has a recommendation on a good make/model to buy?

Thank you

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have Windows 7 64bit, a Belkin router, and a Wifi usb card.

I have a Windows Xp computer networked and shared on the router.

I get my internet from the Wifi usb card.
I would like to use the internet off the wifi card, but also still connect to my network and get files from the XP computer.

(I would like to have the connections separate. One for Internet over Wifi. Lan for sharing files over home network.)

I have the two connections working just fine. and i can get internet...
But...

The LAN is a "public network" and I cant change it to a home network.
and i cant see the Xp computer or its files.
I would be grateful for any help.

Ok, your W7 machine is using the USB wifi, and your XP is using the home wifi (ie through your router). I cannot see why your W7 can't use both the USB wifi AND router wifi. Matter of fact it should work from connections point of view. I tried it on my eeepc, with a USB modem attached.

If you are just sharing files from your W7 and Xp, you don't need to be on the internet. That said if both machine can see each other, everything you wanted should be fine. Just create shared folder to be shared between the machines, and surf the net from either. However why do u want to use the USB wifi for internet when you can use your router's?

Hi All

I have recently renewed my Linksys WRT54G router and need to security protect my home wifi network. When I access the router admin panel and go to Wireless > Wireless Security > Security Mods, I see the following options:

Disable (currently selected)
WPA Personal
WPA Enterprise
WPA2 personal
WPA2 Enterprise
RADIUS
WEP

I assume the mode I need is WEP, but when I select that I am faced with another screen of options, and it is this screen I need information on please (see screenshot).

Which Transmit Key should I select, which WEP encryption should I select, and what passphrase should I use...? Also, when I then do this, what will happen to the laptops on my network when they try to access the internet? Will they be prompted to enter the 4 keys that are generated? Will this be just once, or each time they access the net?

Thanks all.

My ISP is blocking use of wifi router at my flat. They provided me static(private class A) ip address, gateway and two dns servers. When i configured my router, i can see that it can connect to internet and update the router date & time to current, but i cannot browse or download from my laptops or desktops. Although i can ping several websites. But that's it. They(ISP) said that use of wifi router is not allowed at their network. Pls help.

Hi everyone & thanks for the help!!I just changed the password on my Belkin Router. Now, however, I can not figure out how to get the new password into my Ipad2 so I can once again connect to wi-fi.I went to settings, then Wi-Fi. (Not connected) I do see my network on the list. (Belkin.ad2) When I tap on the actual work Belkin.ad2, I get a message that says "Unable to join Belkin.ad2". When I click on the blue arrow to the right of the network belkin.ad2, I see 3 tabs...DHCP, BootP and Static. Neither of them give me a space to type anything in such as a password.PLEASE HELP. Thanks again

A:Help me get wifi on my Ipad2 from my Belkin Home Router

Does it give the option to "Delete" or "Forget" the network. If you do that it will delete the key associated with the network and the next time you click to connect to the network it will ask you for the new key.

Greetings. My name is Randy. I got home after work yesterday and was unable to get my laptop or Android phone connected to my home network. The modem showed everything was working fine and the router was fine.

Then I noticed in the list of surrounding wifi hotspots, a new one I'd never seen -- Trojan.??? It was named Trojan dot something, like b9 or something like that. I cannot recall but can see it later tonight.

I have a TP-Link TL-WR940N V3 Wireless N450 Home Router.

Very troubling. Want to take care of this ASAP.

Thank you!

My phone won't connect to my Belkin router (F5D7230-4) thru the wifi connection. It previously had connected fine, but I'd reset the router today & changed the password. I'm able to connect with no problems (thru wifi or regular connection) on my pc. I went to my Belkin router page and have looked at my MAC settings (only option it gives is to clone, which I tried), I've also tried changing the password....my phone also gave me the option of hitting the WPS button on my router within 2 minutes, which I did, but it would not configure automatically as it was supposed to.

When I try to get on, on my phone, it'll say connecting, then authenticating, then eventually disable.

I would appreciate any suggestions. I did a search in the forum and saw a couple similar questions but none of those answers/steps seemed to allow me to connect. Thanks.

A:Samsung Galaxy S2 won't connect to home router/wifi.

from a pc can we see an ipconfig /all

then on the telephone from the network settings - would you post back the IP address, Subnetmask, default gateway and DNS settings if available

you could try logging into the router and removing the wireless security and see if the phone now connects - if it does - put the security back on and try again

Run Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector
Download and install
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to copy the program across to the faulty PC
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file and paste here.
http://www.xirrus.com/Products/Wi-Fi-Inspector.aspx
Direct link to the program is here http://wpc.475a.edgecastcdn.net/00475A/XirrusWiFiInspectorSetup.1.2.0.exe

{If the above link does not work heres another link http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_download/fid,77196-order,4/download.html}

Then run and install the program - on a wireless enabled PC/Laptop
if you get an error - You need NET Framework installed for the WiFi Inspector to function.

Run the program

A user guide is available here http://www.xirrus.com/Products/Wi-Fi-Inspector/xirruswifiinspectorguide1-2-0.aspx

post a screen shot of the program running - if there are a lot of networks showing can you click on "networks" top lefthand area - so we can see all the network information, and also post which network "Adapter Name" (1st column) is yours on the list

To post a screen shot of the active window, hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file.
To upload it to the forum, open the full reply window and use the Manage Attachments button to upload it here.
Full details are here http://library.techguy.org/wiki/TSG_Posting_a_Screenshot

Note:
For a reliable (or robust as the Xirrus user guide says) wireless connection you need a signal of about -70 dBm or better.

If you are using the Mac OS then use http://www.istumbler.net/

Hey guys..

So I bought myself a MyBook Live NAS few weeks back and I'm a little concerned about security when hooking this up on wifi, home network.
I get that you need a password for connecting to a WPA2 secure network, and that my home network shows for everyone in my routers reach, but does the NAS show up for my neighbours? Does the NAS itself need password protection?
Sorry if this has been covered on another post, but beeing new to the whole NAS thing, I have no idea how to search up this particular problem.

A:[HELP] NAS on home network through wifi..

Well you could always disable the broadcast of your network name (SSID) that way your casual computer user with a laptop can't see your network listed if they are in range. That added to a really strong password to get on the wireless network and you should be golden. ~Random alphanumeric strings work best for passwords, wifi is no exception~

I have been running a Netgear DG834 ADSL router here for a while and recently got a Dell notebook (Windows Vista Home Premium Edition)with built-in WiFi . For a period I was connecting to the network using a cable and using the internet quite easily but decided to give myself WiFi connectivity to my home network so I could move around a bit..

I went out and got myself a Netgear WGT624 and daisy-chained it to the DG834 and set it up - the problem is that though it sees the network I cannot connect to the internet gateway on the DG834.

Any solutions to this anyone?

A:Cannot Network My Pc To Home Pc For Wifi Connection!!!

Rule of thumb..

1. disable the wireless in windows
2. enable the wired in windows
3. if you get conneced on the wired in windows great if not?
4. if you great you're connected then enable the wireless got to 6.
5. if not so great you need to trouble shoot your router to see why it can't see the your PC, make sure DHCP is enabled
6. wait the wireless to connect again if it doesn't connect make sure got to step 5.

Also do this...
click on start
click on run
type: cmd
type: ipconfig /all make sure you don't see the 169.xxx address if you see that then better off rebooting the PC and reseting the router..

A:losing WiFi in Home Network

Why SP2 (which is what you have in your Computer specs)? SP3 has been out for I forget how many years and nothing prior to SP3 has been supported by Microsoft for about two years. Also important (to me) is that SP3 fixed some networking issues and don't get really motivated to try to fix something that isn't really a problem.

Update to SP3, then install the latest wireless driver from Acer's web site.

I can't connect connect to my home wireless network. It says I am connected but none of my browsers will load anything.
I can connect to other wireless networks that i have access to.
I can connect if i plug into the router directly
All of the other computers in my house connect just fine.
Any thoughts

A:Can't connect to Wifi on home network but everyone else can

I think its a security issue.
1) Check the password you put in and make sure its written correctly with the right case (lowercase/uppercase).
2) Disable any 3G/4G connections if you have any.

If that doesn't work giive me more information about your network:
1) General network layout (two computers, one laptop/one desktop, w/dsl modem to a residential gateway, etc)
2) Also, tell me what security mechanism you have on your wireless access point (WEP, WPA, WPA2). If you're using CCMP/AES and you have an older computer then you may not be able to use them together.

please help!

A:Unable to hook up a WIFI to home Network

Am I to understand that you are recieving Wifi on your vaio and have physically connected your 2nd laptop via an ethernet cable? If so, ICS (internet connection sharing) needs to be enabled on your vaio.

Navigate to your network connections, select your wifi connection on your vaio, right click on properties and click on the sharing tab and select the

"Allow other users to connect through this internect connection" check box.

Should start working instantly, but a restart of both may be necessary.

Hope that helps

i just bought a hp pavillion 15-R005TX , but it refuses to detect my homes wifi signal .i have gone through the previous posts on this site and i hv changed the ssid name of my router, but still the laptop is not detecting the wifi. Then is used my android phone as a hot spot and it was detected by the laptop but no site not even google could be opened (it may be bcoz of weak signal). i hope to get some solution soon thanks in advance

A:hp laptop not detecting home wifi network

Hello @rohitseth21 , Welcome to the HP Forums! I understand you're having connection issues on your 15-R005TX notebook. If the notebook sees the hotspot but doesnt see the routers SSID you might be better off inquiring with your Internet Service Provider or router manufacturer. Here are some steps you can try. Powercycle the network:1. Shut down your notebook.2. Unplug the power to your router.3. Unplug the power to your modem.4. Wait at least 45 seconds.5. Plug in the modem, and wait for it to come back online.6. Plug in the router, and wait for it to come back online.7. Turn on your notebook, and test your connection.Reset the TCP/IP settings on your PC:1. Go to your start screen/menu and type CMD.2. Right click on the command prompt icon and chose Run as administrator.3. In the window that opens type "netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt" without quotes, and press enter.4. Restart your PC and test.It may also help to reset the winsock catalogue:1. Go to your start screen/menu and type CMD.2. Right click on the command prompt icon and chose Run as administrator.3. In the window that opens type "netsh winsock reset" without quotes, and press enter.4. Restart your PC and test.Reinstall the network adapter drivers:1. Download the drivers from here but do not run them yet.2. Go to your start screen/menu and type Device Manager.3. Expand Network adapters.4. Right click on the wireless adapter and choose Uninstall.5. Run the downloaded drivers from step 1.6. Restart your PC and test.If those three steps do not resolve the issue, try this document published by Microsoft for networking issues: Wired and wireless network problems. You can change the operating system with the dropdown in the upper-right corner of the document. Hopefully this helps!

Call your Help Desk. My wife's does that, until she goes in and disable the Proxy in Internet Properties in Control Panel. Just remember to turn back on.

The first time she brought it home, because they replaced her older unit. IT had made a Fat Finger mistake in the VPN connection.

So when she tried to get on our home WiFi, it did the same as yours. Plus her work a GPO, to restrict her from using any LAN or WiFi connection, but the company's.

I have had a problem for the past couple days. I have looked over many places on the internet and have not found a solution.

The problem is my computer ASUS ul 30-a up until a few days ago was running fine on wireless until a couple of days ago when the wireless constantly was cutting out every minute or so and reconecting 10-15 seconds later. I have reformatted my computer and installed multiple new driver from the Asus website. When wired into the router the internet works perfectly. But wireless even directly next to it does not work. Their are 2 other laptops in the house neither which have had any problem dropping connections. Another thing I fine odd is that my computer is perfectly fine on my wireless at school. I have tried resetting the router and multiple router setting but still nothing. Renew release Ip, Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:Wifi connects to other networks but not my home network

Probably won't help, but what does Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center show for your connection? And, when there, go to Change adapter settings. Once there, right click on whatever adapter icons are shown, and run Diagnose. For the heck of it, you could try Ethernet both through the router and directly to your modem. Does you computer have a manual external switch for turning wifi on and off?

And, try using WPA2 if not already doing so. Is Norton completely uninstalled to the point where Windows Defender is working?

I've Unidentified network home with Wifi internet only read countless threads here and elsewhere but have found nothing that really describes my problem First of all some background I live on a boat and the only available Internet connection is by Wifi There are no landline or cable connections available I have two Toshiba laptops one running Pro and one running Pro They are networked by direct ethernet cable connection The network works fine once you get past the unidentified public network to unidentified home network And I Unidentified home network with Wifi only internet can connect to the Internet by Wifi from either laptop or both at once DHCP is enabled on both adapters I have tried with no success and considerable frustration to make my Unidentified home network with Wifi only internet home network quot identifiable quot so I don't have to reset the network location on both machines anytime there is a break in the connection eg restart shutdown Everything I have tried that makes the home network identified though has kept me from connecting to the Internet by Wifi It appears to me that once the home network is identified specific DNS valid IPs that Windows wants to connect the network rather than the individual laptops to the Internet and so though I can connect to the Wifi network itself and it says I have Internet access I'm quot invisible quot evidently no gateway to the Wifi ISP I have worked manually through Properties of the adapters and have tried a wired only router Trendnet TW -S W CA also a Network switch which didn't solve the unidentified problem When using the router as soon as I unplug from it I have Internet connectivity by Wifi without having to reconnect The only thing I haven't tried is using ICS as I'm not sure how vulnerable I would be on the Wifi I hope I've presented the problem clearly but I'll try to put it more basically Is there a way to use a wired router with no Internet connection to create a home network and still be able to connect to the Internet by Wifi

I have an internet connection that I have extended to my Brother in law's house, next door. At the moment, I basically have two LAN cables coming out of my modem/router, one going to my computer and another, extended cable, going to his computer.
However, he wants to use his spare modem/router, which has wifi capability, to allow his son to use his own computer downstair with only wifi.
Therefore, will there be any conflicts if I simply splice in a Lan cable or add a lan socket for the second modem/router (wifi location.) at the appropriate point along Lan cable 2? See diagram below.
If there is a possibility of conflict what would be an alternate wiring method?

Thanks,
Tom.

A:Adding extra wifi (modem/router) to my already extended network

Good drawing and this will work just fine. In fact, that's what I use to get access at the far end of the house. Here's the trick;

router#1(lan slot) ---- (lan slot) router#2 with wifi
Notice that #2 WAN slot is left empty! This places all systems on the same subnet of the router#1 {what you are doing is making router#2 act like a switch which has wifi support (y) }

* Give router# a unique LAN address (If #1 is 192.168.1.1, then make #2 192.168.1.1) This will allow each to be manage via a browser connection
* in router#2 disable DHCP. This forces #1 to be the manager of the entire network and it will handout all IP addresses
Personally, I use the MAC addresses of my devices to enable router#1 to use Address Reservation of IP address for all devices attached to #1 (ie I map the devices to the range 1.2-> 1.10)

Then set the DHCP range in #1 to 1.100-1.50
These will be used for all devices attached (wired or wifi) to #2

Optional:
All systems can then use the firewall to allow or deny access for one or both halves of the network. EG: I permit access for 1-10 and 255 while denying 100-254ALL system must allow the top-end address 255 as that is the broadcast address that is used to hand out the DHCP data.

A:Adding WiFi to an existing cabled network (router) system?

Rick said:

A wireless access point should be the solution. They look a lot like routers usually - but without the routing stuff. .

This device would basically just add wireless capability to your existing setup without interfering with your current configuration.

An issue to consider though is that APs tend to be just as expensive as their router counterparts, despite routers having more versatility. For this reason, you may want to consider getting a router, but turning off its DHCP-server function and not plugging any devices into is WAN port (basically turns it into an AP). It would add a little extra confusion, but the extra utility might be nice...Click to expand...

Aha, interesting... Any specific pointers for a wireless access point? I actually read about them in a how stuff works WiFi article, but I couldn't find anything specific on Newegg. If I were to get a wireless router (again, any specific pointers? ), do I have to replace my main router? Or can I connect the wireless router to one of my main router slots ?

Either way, thanks for the quick reply

A:Which Home Network Router, etc., Please ?

Cat 6 not needed and useless for short runs. Use Cat 5e.

I personally like D-Link routers. Cheap, efficient, works as advertised and basically, perfect stability. My DI-624 rev. C is wireless G+ (108 mbps wireless) and has been flawless for me for about 5 years now.

I'd imagine their N routers are just as good or better.

I have two router connected via a crossover between two lan ports. Disabled dhcp on the second and with the same gateway and subnet gave it an ip of 192.168.0.254.

The question:

As far as the computers connected to the second router ip's are concerned:
Can I set any ip configuration like
ip 192.168.0.253
subnet 255.255.255.0
Gateway 192168.0.254
Is this a proper setup for the ip on a pc connected to the second router ?

Hey!

I'm having a bit of trouble setting up my home network, which looks something like in the image below.

I've got Computer 1 connected to the internet via NIC 1 and connected to the router via NIC 2.

What i want to do is
A) is share the internet connection with the rest of the network via the router.
B) be able to access computer 1 shares from the rest of the network

Any suggestions?

/F

EDIT: The router is a D-Link DIR-100

A:Home network ICS with router

You would be better served to have the router connected directly to the modem then have everything plugged into the router. I can't think of a good reason to use ICS when you already have a router. The router will also use a common default gateway which will allow for file sharing.

Internet>modem>router> switch, >all pc's connected to either the router or a switch.

I have a new HP Pavillon g4 with Windows 7 Home Premium installed and connect to the internet via an external antenna to a hotspot nearby. I'm trying to create a Home Network or Ad-Hoc computer to computer network without a router and without cables, using my Windows 7 computer as the master, receiving the internet, and my second computer running on XP SP2 as a slave. I have tried ad-hoc setup, but my XP does not connect to the internet (the XP connects without problem when I insert the external antenna directly). Does anyone know if it is possible to share internet between Windows 7 and XP and how to go about it? I googled for hours and tried different setups, all failed. I have successfully installed the "Virtual Router Manager", it works well between Windows 7 computers or tablets, but not with XP. Any help is much appreciated.

A:home network without a router

To share a connection in that way uses ICS (Internet Connection Sharing).ICS requires that you use two physically separate adapters. So to do a fully wireless ICS network using your laptop would require that you use the internal wireless adapter (which I am assuming is the external antenna) for one side of the network and another adapter connected via USB or some other external connection to serve the other side of the network. Short explanation why is that ICS uses NAT to connect the other computers to the internet which requires two seprate networks...one WAN and one LAN. I can explain more in depth if you would like but that is the quick and dirty explanation.

I just moved my 4 year old Dell desktop into a different room and upgraded to Windows 7. I purchased a wireless network adaptor to connect to my home network. I set up the network profile on my Dell and typed in the password, but unfortunately every time my computer goes into sleep or is rebooted I have to reconnect to the network manually. In the network Properties I've clicked on "Connect Automatically" and typed in the password. But, and this is really strange, every time I reboot or come out of sleep the password has to be reentered and the "connect automatically" is no longer clicked. Am I crazy? Has anyone else encountered this? I suppose I'm missing something really basic, but am not sure what to do. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I am sure that you are well beyond this error now. Regardless, I am replying because I need help for the same issue. Even if I end up solving it myself, I will post my answer in this thread.

I plan to take the steps outlined in this post next. If that doesn't work, then I will have to read Microsoft developer documentation on the Native WIFI profile and hope that a deep understanding leads me to the solution.

I'm not a Windows developer nor am I a .NET developer, but I do know programming, so I'm hoping it will make sense regardless.

So far so good, except those 2 computers are ALSO part of a Wifi network to connect to the internet through a wireless router. There are other computers on this network (other roommates) that must NOT have access to anything shared on either on those 2 computers.

I've tried fiddling with homegroups but the only homegroups we can create are on the WiFi network. If I set the LAN connection to anything else but public by setting PC2 as a default gateway, I can't get access to the internet anymore.

How on earth can I set that up properly, if that's even possible?

EDIT: my brain is so close to imploding that I forgot basic curtesy-

Of course, thank you in advance for your help.

Sounds to me like you are using ICS to create a secondary wired connection for the second machine.

You need to use the LAN ports on the router or a switch rather than sharing a connection using ICS "internet connection sharing". Homegroups won't work with ICS.

Once you are connected to the router with a regular LAN connection with both machines, you should have no problems setting up a Homegroup between those two machines.

Once the Homegroup is set up it will lock the other machines out of your shared C:>Users folders on both of the Homegroup machines. You will be able to share exclusively between those two machines while the other wireless machines will have no access unless you give it to them by adding Everyone to the shared with list.

Hi everyone,

I need some help with a laptop, all of a sudden it stopped detecting my home WiFi network.

The laptop worked fine with this network before and it was configured to connect automatically.
The laptop detects the whole other bunch of networks around here (neighbours and such) but not my home. Other PCs and smartphones detect and connect to my network just fine.

I tried restarting the laptop, reinstalling and updating the drivers for the WiFi card and nothing worked.

It's an Asus laptop with Windows 8.1

I thank you in advance for any help you can give me.

Hi all I want to use a new LinkSys Cable DSL Router model befsr but some things are not working I have an older Netgear RP router and with that I can easily see all computers in my home and print etc In other words everything is configured and working at least with the old router The internet works fine on but seen on on old Computers router network on can not new one. home be the new router but I can t see computers in the home network It also can t find a newly added printer that I d like to share If I hook up the old router again then everything works again The printer is also found Once it s seen and shared I can then switch to the new router and print to it from another computer However I d like the new router Computers on home network can be seen on old router but not on new one. to be able to find that printer without relying on the old router every time If I re-install windows on a computer on the network then the printer of course goes away It then starts all over again I need the old router each and every time to find a printer for sharing Also the main problem of course is that I also can t see any computers in the home network with this new router I figure there must be some way to make the new router act Computers on home network can be seen on old router but not on new one. like the old one since the old one is so simplistic I m hoping I m missing something simple in the LinkSys s setup The systems all use Windows XP I d list all computer specs for all computers but this seems to be a problem with the new router and nothing in particular with the Computers on home network can be seen on old router but not on new one. computers To give you an idea one is a ghz Intel on an Asus motherboard with GB ram The other systems are ghz and on similar LAN connections are built into the motherboard The modem is an Arris cable modem All computers plug into the router which is then connected to the modem But again the router is causing the problem that prevents computers from seeing each other At least I think so since I can always hook up the old one and have it works Can anyone see something I ve overlooked Thanks Update I was able to somehow get the home network to be visible with the new router However I still can t get a new printer to be recognized with network sharing unless I hook up the old router nbsp

A:Computers on home network can be seen on old router but not on new one.

A bit more info would be helpful. Are the pc's static or dynamic ips? Can you ping anything? Have you been able to talk to your new router? Does it have the dhcp enabled/disabled? With a bit of info you might be able to duplicate most of the settings from the old to the new router if you can talk to them.

Once and for all I d like to learn about this so far I just hook things up and somehow get the to work and then think if I try and do anything else with it I ll mess it up and it won t work But I really don and a how network? set clear router up home to t know what I m doing I had a Belkin Router for or so years got it new didn t opt for a password and managed to get a home network working the router on a Win XP desktop also a printer attached to laptop Win Wi Fi and then my Android phone Since there wasn t any passwords it how to clear a router and set up home network? would just set things up I live in a rural area and didn t feel need for passwords and it seemed easier at the time Someone gave me a like new Linksys router WRT N hardly used when my previous one wasn t working good It started out asking for a usename and password the person who gave it to me said they either didn t have or don t remember having I looked online it said use ADMIN ADMIN or leave one space blank never got that to work Read complicated directions about how to clear the router sticking a pin in a little home and turning it off and on etc I tried this not sure I did it right but router stopped asking how to clear a router and set up home network? for password I got the network to set up on the Win laptop but it ended up giving me a number how to clear a router and set up home network? said to save it I d need it groups of letters and numbers with dashes XXXX-XXXX-XXXX I ve had to put this in anything I do to connect to the Wi Fi like with my Android phone and people who come here family who want to use the Wi Fi I think this is connecting to my network and not to the router directly though With my belkin router I could put in and get the router settings With this one it asks for a username and password when I do this Which I think shows the router isn t cleared of a password I tried leaving it blank or using ADMIN one or both spaces doesn t work Problem for me is I feel easily confused and at least it s working NOW even though it s not the way I think it should be and I really should learn once and for all about this and how to do it I ve googled this and found various directions which seem complicated and some seem different than others Like clearing the router pushing the reset hole with a pin for so long than starting and restarting it etc If I could afford it right now I d get a new router and start over I assume the new one would come with a factory set password or none at all but I d still have to set up the network again I use the network to share files myself between my desktop and laptop use the phone with Wi Fi and use the printer from the laptop wireless via the desktop the printer is plugged in to I d like it works now even though I don t think it s right and I really should learn one and for all how to do this and what I m doing LOL maybe someone knows a link that has very simple directions to do this I d like to end up for now anyway with the router without a password unsecured WiFi and my home network- whether this has a password for me to use or not I d like to be able to put a simple to remember password on or none at all I think now everything that is using Wi FI is using it off my home network and not the router directly and I don t think this is right Of course I don t know thanks nbsp

yes you need to connect the PC to the internet somehow - so if you dont have wireless then a cable will be needed

I have a lenovo G505 laptop - it will no longer connect to my BT home hub despite it showing as being available. I suspect it might be to do with the fact that it is has a passkey - I entered it yesterday when prompted and it connected fine, but now I'm not being given the option of entering the key.
I've also tried connected using the BT wifi (as opposed to homehub) but once again it will not connect me.
I've been through all the troubleshooting options, and searched under every term I can think of, but nothing is working.
Any suggestions?

A:Cannot connect to Home Network - BT router

Have you ran the troubleshooter, this will reset the wifi adapter which will generally reestablish the wifi connection. Otherwise a hard reboot of the router should work. Just unplug the router from power outlet for 2 minutes and then plug it back in.

I'm tryin to figure out how to network my computers at home. I have a cable modem hooked into a linksys router. One of my PC's has an ethernet cable running to the router and my other is wireless.

I tried to set up a hom/office network and my notebook says that I need to be plugged into the router. I don't want to do that on my notebook, I want to be wherever in my home. Then I tried to set up a wireless network, but then it said I needed an access point.

All I want to do is share some files. Can't I set up a network with the equipment I have now? I was hoping to get this to work, then get a network harddrive.

Thanks

Please see the attached pic to learn more about my situation.

I have two routers at home: Buffalo wifi router and Cisco 1700
So far, i have configured on the cisco router
Fa0/0 with 192.168.12.1 255.255.255.0
eth0/0 with 192.168.11.60 255.255.255.0

route with RIP v2, no auto-summary.
In LAN 1, my PC1 can go online and Ping to LAN2 with no problem.

MY PROBLEM:
In LAN 2, my pc2 and laptop can PING to pc1 and router 1. but they CAN'T go online. It seems LAN2 can't go beyond LAN1 to the internet.
Does anyone if I am missing anything to configure on the cisco router?? Thanks a lot!!!

Many computer users don't realize it, but for most people their internet router is the most important electronic device in their home. It links most of their other devices together and to the world, so it has a highly privileged position that hackers can exploit.

Unfortunately many consumer and small-business routers come with insecure default configurations, have undocumented backdoor accounts, expose legacy services and have firmware that is riddled with basic flaws. Some of these problems can't be fixed by users, but there are many actions that can be taken to at least protect these devices from large-scale, automated attacks.

Don't let your router be a low-hanging fruit for hackers.

Well I have Linksys router by Cisco. It's known to be a good router, and I would reccomend it. Hopefully it would work for your situation. Just incase, try looking up multiple routers online just to be sure. A website like Cisco or newegg may be useful. Just a suggestion. Hope you get what you're looking for!

I currently have a dell desktop hardwired to my comcast cable (12MB speed). Components are Linksys wireless g cable modem gateway (wcg 200 model), and a vonage phone VDV21 phone router. My signal will intermittently drop, have to re-boot both the linksys modem/gateway and the vonage router. Comcast said the linksys modem was no longer a good modem with their service but activated it anyway. They tried to say it was not docsis 2.0 compliant and it is. They recommended a docsis 3.0 modem would work better, but I have not found many avaialble. Would I be bettter off with a cable modem and seperate wireless router for my home network? I am looking at doing something like apple tv, but want a more reliable connection as well as faster if posssible. The range is good when working with my laptop in basement. It just seems that larger files/webpages with video will knock off my signal completely at times.

Will be replacing my old and trusty Netgear WGT624 router with a new Netgear WNR3500 this weekend

Using WEP 128 bit security now and I believe will switch to WPA2-PSK available on the new Netgear.

Assuming I will have to redo all the various PC's with new "keys" from WEP to WPA2-PSK...but other than that is there anything else I need to do before/after or during the switch over ?

2 Win 7 Pro PC's (hard wired)
2 Win XP Home Edition Laptops (wireless)
1 Win XP Pro desktop (hard wired)
1 Wii game console using the network (wireless)
3 shared printers (wireless)

Thanks, TR

A:What Router/Switch for home network and CCNA

First, the top-end stuff would really be neat, but features come at a price, so
most commercial routers are eliminated.

review this post for some ideas.

Personally, I've been using a Netgear 4-port for several years and it's been
a faithful servant

Don't get confused re router vs switch/hub. The router is at the top of the list.
A switch(preferred) or hub can then be attached to the router to make more
connections available.

Hi,
I have recently bouth the Topcom Powerlan 200 ( http://tools.topcom.net/userguides/PowerLan 200 UK-EUR-SCAN-PT.pdf )
I had previous a network with my SMC 7004 router on cable.

With the powerlines I've lost my homenetwork with my other computer.

This is the current configuration:
internet > cable modem > powerline adaptor > to AC > powerline adaptor > SMC router WAN > multiple connections to my PC, my network HD, network printer. And on the other side of the house a laptop.
Only thing is, I can't reach the other PC and hardware in the homenetwork. Internet works.

I've called Topcom, I've called my cable provider. But none could answer how.

Can you give a solution how to connect all the hardware?
Also, could the powerlines act as a firewall? And if not, how can I configure it all so everyting is safe in my homenetwork?

I would be thankfull !

I want to set up a router and some central storage my wife with her laptop and I with my desktop can share and that is secure I also want to save energy and have a secure network currently we use a separate DSL modem and router netgear WPN and have a W home group My desktop has RAID and I do frequent backups of data to an external HDD but whne my desktop is off and I don't want to waste energy so leaving that on all day is not an option my wife can't access it I also would like to have something where I can have automatic backup I eyed buying the NetgearDGND that has a DSL modem built in and is ENERGY STAR rated Deleting one device separate modem combination best storage router/network home also would de-clutter my desk best home router/network storage combination It also seems to have more security options than my current router which I like It has a USB port - does that mean I could attach an USB HDD and use that as my network storage and backup I don't know if that is what the USB port on that router is for Will I then be able to control the HDD like any other HDD and format it in whatever way W lets me - are the USB HDDs good enough to be on all the time they use less energy don't need additional power supplies etc But do they last as long I also was looking at some network storage but from reading the reviews the less expensive ones are slow and they use a proprietary file format If I'm desperate and the thing fails I want to be able to take the HDD plug it into my desktop and read the data in Windows without needing any netear D-link or whatever software And I still would need a router so the expense would be high and power consumption probably too And the HDDs in there don't get cooled so well I don't want to run a separate server for cost energy reasons and I also like the Hardware firewall the router offers Any ideas what the best would be I don't want to build a small server

A:best home router/network storage combination

Here is an example: Newegg.com - ASUS TS Mini SOHO Home Server w/ Intel Atom N280 1.66GHz 1GB DDR2 500GB HDD installed, powered by Windows Home Server - Server Systems But for your purpose you may consider a netbook with Win7 where you attach a couple of disks and share them in the home network.

Can anyone offer help on this, please?

I have a new 64-bit desktop running Windows 7 (Home Premium) and an old 32-bit laptop running XP Pro, networked via a linksys router with a HP printer attached to the desktop. I have installed a Windows 7 printer driver in the desktop, and it prints fine. I can no longer print from the laptop, however, although it recognises the printer.

The desktop replaces a previous one running XP Pro. I don't think I have a printer driver in the laptop (but it is possible), nor do I know if it is necessary.

Can I get around this problem by installing an XP driver in the laptop, or is there a 32- vs 64-bit incompatibility causing it?

Thanks!

A:Home network printer, linksys router, 2 different OSs

If you connect the laptop directly to the printer and install the driver and check that everything is working.

once this is done disconnect the direct link and go through the network add printer and it should see the printer and allow you to use the "existing driver"

if not you need to create a new port in the xp printer driver, ( printer properties - ports- add port), a TCP/IP port pointing to the address that the printer is on the network - (either the machine address,(/computername/printername), IP address,(/192.n.n.n/printername) or just the IP address for a network printer

Hi,

I recently bought dlink D2750U WIFI ADSL modem/router, for my ADSL internet connection.

But I have now changed my ISP, who provide internet via cable(not telephone line). The ISP guy provides a cable modem(old modem) along with it.

I have connected my PC this way:
Cable modem -> Router -> PC through RJ45. I am able to access internet from my PC, but I am not able to get wifi working on the router. And I am logging onto internet through a dial up connection.
Questions:
1) Please help in configuring the router to get wifi working.
2) Also, my default gateway seems to be either 0.0.0.0 or blank. So, I am not able to login to the modem unless I remove the modem connection. Please let me know if I am doing anything wrong here.

Here are a few more details:
Output of ipconfig: http://pastebin.com/Zr9Eb7L7

A:Using dlink D2750U Wifi Modem/Router As a Wifi Router

Hey Narain. The D-Link unit you have appears to be a combo unit (modem and wireless router) since it connects straight to the RJ-11 phone line. This unit won't work with an ISP that provides service by way of coax cable. The D-Link will work if you want to use DSL, but you need a cable service compatible modem or combo modem/router if you use cable service.

Hi
I alreadfy have a home network. Cable modem connection serving my computer and telephone (I have vonage broadband phone) through the linksys adapter provided by vonage. I purchased a wireless router and I need to hook it up. If I connect the wireless routers internet port(WAN) to an ethernet port in the linksys adapter, it doesnt work. However, when I connect it port to port (ethernet port of the wireless router to an ethernet port of the linksys adapter), the internet connectionw works. However, I am unable to activate the wireless network.

I tried connecting the wirless router directly to the modem (removing the linksys adapter) and carried out the installation provided in a CD by the manufacture and it wont work fine.

I cant get rid of the linksys adapter as it is essential for my broadband phone.

Any suggestions? Please help..

Thanks
RK

A:Connecting a Wireless router to an existing home network

You should have bought a wireless access point instead of a router.. *mutter*

"unable to activate" means what? Increadibly heavy feeling creeps into your hands making you unable to operate the computer?

Some more information here would really help.. Symptoms, computers and operating systems involved, types of wireless equipment, the router configuration etc.

I am not sure how to make it accessilbe.

Any help would be appreciated.

Often my router drops connection to all my devices. Multiple times a day. It's only for a minute or so, but it's annoying. I'm using a Linksys Wireless-N router (WRT160N) with WEP encryption. I'm running two Windows 7 laptops, LG BluRay player, Apple TV, Xbox 360 (Wired) iPhone 4, and a iPad 2. It doesn't matter if I'm browsing the web, watching Netflix, or playing a game, the connection gets lost. As we speak it happened again. I have no clue on what to do. I've reconfigured it multiple times. Firmware has been updated months ago. I bought this about nine months ago. This has been a problem since day one, only now I'm seriously getting fed up with it since I started working from home.

Hi,

I have just joined up to sky broadband and have been sent a d-link router. I followed the set up disk that came with it and the Internet worked fine while it was connected through the Ethernet cable. I disconnected the cable and tried to connect wirelessly. My laptop found the new network to which I selected connect. I typed in the key code supplied with the router and my laptop tells me it's connecting. Once it connects it states that the network is unidentified and can only connect locally.

This has confused me as my iPhone works fine on the new network but my laptop can't.

My laptop is a Samsung R20 and runs with OS vista. I have never had problems like this with any other network I have connected to.

Please let me know your thoughts

thank you in advance.

{run Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector} Download and install
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to copy the program across to the faulty PC

http://www.xirrus.com/library/wifitools.php
Then run the program
if you get an error - You need NET Framework installed for the WiFi Inspector to function.

post a screen shot of the program running - if there are a lot of networks showing can you click on "networks" top lefthand area - so we can see all the network information, and also post which network "Adapter Name" (1st column) is yours on the list

So, after my router reset itself, I had to set it up again. no problem. Got it up and running, checking it was all fine, when I saw this under statistics.

The received bytes was a figure of around 7mb. The transmitted bytes was 47mb.

The packets, received was about 20000, transmitted was easily twice that.

I don't upload anything at all. I would watch youtube videos, browse webpages, and the received always seemed a lot less than transmitted.

What would be causing my network to transmit so much data and receive so little? There are no unauthorized devices connected to our router, so I'm at a loss as to what is using up all my bandwidth and what data it's sending?

Is it a simple thing, like I've misunderstood received/transmitted actual meaning, or what?

A:Home network router shows higher transmitted packets than received

Are you talking about the LAN statistics, or is this what your router is saying?

If the former, are there any shared services on the network like HomeGroup, streaming or file shares?

If the latter, what?! It could be a virus. Check your Resource Monitor to see what is doing what and also to confirm which PC is doing it.

I am trying to connect my old Linksys WRH G with DD-WRT firmware main router to my new Linksys E with Cisco firmware as access point However I want two SSID s available on my WLAN One is for my Home network and another is for my Guest network The Guest network should not be able to communicate with SSID's point (Home/Guest main broadcasted over router Network) Two and access my home network as to provide security for my home devices I have already created for my Guest network a separate bridge with a different subnet and a different DHCP range from the ones on my Home network I have configured these in my main router It works perfectly on my main router However I don t know how to configure my access point to duplicate both SSID s I understand that using the bridge mode and then putting a same SSID and password on my access point will provide a smooth handover for my mobile devices though I haven t really tried it yet However since I have two Two SSID's (Home/Guest Network) broadcasted over main router and access point SSID s my question is how do I broadcast on my access point the SSID s of both networks if only one can be registered Is this setup even possible If not do you have a different workaround Thanks I d appreciate all the help I can get nbsp

I am trying to use a new Macbook Pro with an existing wifi network that has several Windows 7 PCs. The Mac has no problems getting on the wifi network. I can connect to the Mac from my Windows 7 PC to read files on the Mac and transfer files from the PC
to the Mac. But I cannot get the Mac to connect to my Windows 7 PC. I want the Mac to read files on the PC and use the printer that is connected to the PC.
When I try to connect to the PC from the Mac, I get an error message on the Mac saying ?there are no shares available or you are not allowed to access them on the server?.
