Automatic Logon to Windows Account / Sound icon on taskbar doesn't show

Q: Automatic Logon to Windows Account / Sound icon on taskbar doesn't show

Okay when I turn my computer on, it goes through all of the normal stuff, but then it automatically logs on to my main account (which I use, but it's password protected and everything) and all of my scanners did not find any problems.

Also, the volume control icon does not show on the taskbar anymore. It comes back after going into control panel > sounds, speech, and audio devices > sounds and audio devices > uncheck "place volume icon in the taskbar" + click apply > recheck "place volume icon in the taskbar" + click apply

When I go to taskbar properties, the audio icon has "always show"

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

try deleting the need for a password and immediately reenable it and set a new one. You should NOT automatically bring up the desktop if the password is set.

When right-clicked my Windows Explorer icon in the taskbar only displays "Desktop" under "Recent". I use it to open lots of things, how come I never see them listed under "Recent". I guess these are called Jump Lists. They also don't display at all for Microsoft Word. There are some there for IE but they don't seem like my most recent visits. Are my jump lists messed up? This example is from a tutorial.

My son gave me his Presario 700 laptop. Yesterday I turned it on and all it would do is go to the wallpaper and then nothing. I do not get any icons or start button. I was able to get on line by going to the ctrl, alt, del and getting the task window and doing a search.

I can not find the restore disk and my son is in Irag, so I can not ask him where it is. My question is, is there a way to restore by using the task window to find the file?

Is this Windows XP? I guess what you could do is search for rstrui.exe, it's the system restore utility, and try that out. You can find it in C:\Windows\system32\Restore (at least on my computer.)

I have a friend setting up computers in a computer cafe (in Costa Rico) with only me as support. I told him to activate the Guest account for his users and have a strong password on the Administrator account he created. He would like to hide the administrator account (called Cafe Owner) at the logon screen without having to deactivate it. Can this be done? if so, how would you do it? Would he still be able to access it through Cntr-Opt-Delete (isn't that it? don't have PC in front of me now) or would he have to do something else to access the account he created?

Thanks for any assistance.

I haven't found this from searching yet.

I want to create a "system account" in vista 64 bit Ultimate. It's just a user account, it will have a profile but 99% of the time no one will log in interactively with this account, more often with just the RunAs option.

Once I created this account though, I have another icon for it on the logon screen! How can I get rid of this icon? I don't want other people who use this PC to log on like that.

It's a normal local account, non domain environment. I was hoping to find a "Do not display a logon icon" checkbox where you change the icon pic or something simple.

A:Create an account without a logon icon

Hello Pdwyer,

If you are just worried about someone logging on to that account, then you could password protect it to prevent them from doing so.

If you really do no want the icon there, then you can hide the user account to do so. Be sure to read the information at the top of the tutorial at that link though for how to access it after it has been hidden.

Hope this helps,

A:Windows 7 Restricted User - Remove Right click on taskbar icons; Remove show desktop icon

Hello Megan,

Hope you're doing fine.

Disabling context menu from application on the taskbar
Please note the task bar context menu for any application for windows 7 is sub-divided into two sections :

   a. Jumplist(to access recently opened files)
   b. Creating a new instance of the application, Pin/Unpin, Close window

We can only disable the Jump List of the Taskbar context menu but not the "new instance creation, Pin/Unpin, close window"

Please follow the steps below to disable jump list:
1. Right-click on the Taskbar and then select Properties.
2. Click on the Start Menu tab and uncheck "Store and display recently opened items in the Start menu and the taskbar".
3. Click OK.

Disabling Show Desktop from the system tray
Regarding the requirement of disabling the "Show Desktop" button alltogether from the System tray, this is by design.

There are no ways to remove it. All we can do is to disable aero peek at Taskbar properties by right clicking and uncheck the option "Use Aero Peek to preview the desktop".
There's a third party software which addresses this sopecific purpose but I'm not pretty sure if this works perfectly for Windows 7 SP1 as well. Please refer to the link below.

I have little experience with computers, so please bear with me here.

I deleted an account quite a while ago as I wasn't using it anymore. However, it is still showing up in the Users folder of my C: drive. It doesn't show up on the welcome screen, in the control panel's account manager, or even in Vistax64's System Info program, so I can't remove it. I can still delete some files off of it, but I would like the whole account gone, as it takes up a large amount of space.

I've had no issues with this other then documents (Open Office) being taken over by an 'Unknown User', which I suspect is this account. What should I do? I've searched all over for a solution, and couldn't find one that matched my problem.

For example:

I'm using Outlook 2000 with Windows XP Professional both with all the latest updates. Very recently the new mail icon doesn't appear in the systray or notification area. The notification option setting for this icon is "hide when inactive". "Display a notification message when new mail arrives" is turned off by preference. An audible sound is emitted when new mail arrives. However, I need assistance to restore the display of the new mail icon in the systray or notification area when new mail arrives.

A:Solved: Outlook 2000 Doesn't Show New Mail Item Icon in Systray

Hi there,
Just change the notification to 'Always show' - this will make it show up in the systray when you have new mail. You can turn off the option for notication msg, if you dont want it. It will not affect the systray settings.

A:The User Profile (Administrator Account) Service failed to logon and then left with only Guest Account in Windows 7

Occasionally, Windows might not read your user profile correctly, such as if your antivirus software is scanning your computer while you try to log on.
Please try restarting your computer and logging on with your user account again.

If the issue still persists, please restart in safe mode to log on with the built-in administrator account:
1. Restart your computer and hit F8 multiples times until you see a menu-like screen, if you see the Windows splash screen then repeat this step
2. Highlight and hit enter on Safe Mode with Command Prompt. Try logging in there.
3. If you are able to login, once a command prompt pops up, type: net user administrator password /active:yes (you can specify whatever password you want for the administrator
4. If you get a message saying "The command completed successfully", then restart your computer by typing: shutdown -r
5. Boot up again pressing F8, but this time choose just Safe Mode.
6. You will be able to login as Administrator with the password you set in Step 3.

Then try the following methods:
Method 1: Fix these user account profile on these computer

Method 2: Log on to Windows and copy your data to a new account
Method 3: Delete the error SID and create a new profile

When I go to "Taskbar and Start Menu Properties" and click on the "Notification Area" Tab I see that under "System Icons" that the only one I can check is the Clock; all the others are grayed out and I can't check them, however, I had a Sound Icon in my Taskbar previously that has for some odd reason simply disappeared, and since I can't check on it here, I can't seem to get it back in my Taskbar no matter where I look on the computer. A:Missing Sound Icon on Taskbar gone after various viruses

G'day Bob,

There are a couple of ways to rectify this pesky critter (the Volume Icon) misbehaving, so lets try these two Steps....

(You will need your Windows? XP CD)

Insert the Windows? XP CD in the Drive. (Hold down the Shift Key to prevent it from starting)....

Now go Start > Run and enter these commands....(hit Enter after each command.)

Enter your CD/DVD Drive letter (I will use E: for this exercise.)

cd i386

expand sndvol32.ex_ c:\windows\system32\sndvol32.exe

(Please note the space between the ex_ and the c:)

Once you hit enter this time you will notice that the file will be 'expanded by an amount of about 145%'.

When it is finished, type exit; remove the CD.

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Manage.
2. Click Services and Applications.
3. Double-click Services.
4. Scroll down in the Services list, right-click SSDP Discovery Service, and then click Properties.
5. On the General tab, in the Startup type drop-down list, click Disabled.
6. Click OK.

Close all windows and reboot the computer.

Upon restart, all should now be normal (hopefully).

Post back with the results, and if there are any other queries/concerns.

A:FireFox Taskbar Icon, Makes Duplicate Taskbar Icon's

Let's fix the duplicate icon first, open Firefox from the pinned icon you have already after the second one opens up unpin the first one and pin the second one that should stop the duplicate icon.

Now the icon go to C:\Users\YOUR USER NAME\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar then right-click on the Firefox shortcut click on properties make sure you're in the Shortcut tab and click on the Change Icon Button. After you open up Firefox again icon will revert back to the default icon because it opens up Firefox.exe you would have to change the icon in the .exe for a permanent change.

however on my new asus, that came with home premium, it comes to the login screen and i must mouse over, select my account, and then enter my password

for convienience sake, how do i change it so that when it comes to the login screen, it automatically prompts me for the password on MY ONLY account, i.e. goes immediately to my account without making me choose (despite it being the only one anyway)

I want the day of the week to show along with the date on the Outlook calandar and on the date & time area of the windows taskbar. I have looked in the Control Panel under Date & Time and of course in the tools of outlook, but there is no option to turn on/off the day of the week. Otherwise the date is accurate & there are no problems with it. Anyone know how to adjust this? Thanks!

I've been having this issue since I have installed windows 8.1 that sometimes that opened video games such as Dota 2 would not show on taskbar and I have to alt+tab to get back to see them. I was hoping to find a solution with regard in how to fix this issue.

A:Windows 8 taskbar issue (Apps wont show)

Some programs open with Hidden Icons. You can fix it by going to Hidden Icons / Customize / and choose Show Icon and Notifications.

Hi there.

I have a taskbar problem, where it wouldn't show any of my application windows opened/running. For example, if I were to open a word document, my task bar remains blank, and I would not have a clue if it were actually opened unless it's the window at the 'top' (i.e. I can only access it using alt+tab). It would show the quick launch toolbar, the language bar etc, but just simply none of the applications I open. I suspect it has something to do with the toolbars not terminating... you know how you can have a choice on how many icons of a toolbar you want to see just by resizing it? Well the resizing function is not available.

I was wondering if anyone had encountered a similar situation and know how to troubleshoot it.

My mate gave me an old HDD of his, a Seagate baracuda 7200rpm 80GB. This disk had linux installed on it before the computer it was on fried. I have plugged it in, and although I can see the disk in a linux disk explorer, it does not show up in windows, probably because it is the wrong format. I have since tried to format it to HFS+ for mac, but that didnt work either. How can I now format this disk to NFTS (thats what windows uses right?)(for the time being) so that I can see the disk in windows?

A:HDD doesn't show up in windows

Right click on "My Computer" and then click on "Manage." Next go to "Disk Management." At this point you should be able to see the drive in question. Now right click on the drive you want to forrmat and click on Format.

If you still can't see the drive go into the bios and see if it shows up in there.

Try this:

Recycle Bin Delete Confirmation - Turn On or Off

1) Right-click the Recycle Bin, then select "Properties"
2) Make sure that Display delete confirmation dialog" is checked
3) Click OK

Hi everyone,

I couldn't find a solution to my problem so far and I will be really grateful if someone can help me. After installing all available updates of windows 8.1, my checkbox for "Show windows Store apps on taskbar" simply disappeared from the taskbar properties. Moreover, the on and off option from Settings -> Change PC settings -> PC and devices -> Corners and edges -> App switching also seems to be forever gone. In other words when I open an app I can't close it (Esc isn't working any more or X option) and I can't see it on the taskbar Please HELP. Thank you in advance!

A:windows 8.1 missing show windows store apps on taskbar

Hello Geryga, and welcome to Eight Forms.

The show Store apps on the taskbar option was part of the April 8th updates. Please check to make sure that you have all available Windows Updates installed, then check to see if you have the option afterwards. If you did install them all, then see if restarting the computer may help.

I'm looking for a way to have something pinned on my taskbar (like a shortcut) to display sidebar, something that works like windows+G.

So far the best I've guessed is to create a shortcut with arguments, the problem is I can't find wich argument shows sidebar's gadgets, just to show their wizzard (/showGadgets).

Anyone knows how to find the argument?

A:Shortcut to Show Sidebar (icon not windows+G)

C:/Program Files/Windows Sidebar/sidebar

right click on sidebar, and Pin to Taskbar.

This will also allow you to pin stuff to the taskbar;

I was wondering if anyone knows of a program that displays all windows on the taskbar in the tray, each with it's own icon. For example if I have word and firefox open there would be a word icon, and firefox icon on the tray andt when I click the word icon it would make word the active program or if I click the firefox icon it would bring up firefox to the front.

Just to clarify I don't need a program that minimizes windows to the tray, I need something that shows even open windows on the tray
Thanks for the help

I have lost the IE 10 icon on the Windows 8 consumer review OS taskbar ( through my own actions ). Does anyone know how I can get the icon back to my taskbar?

A:IE 10 icon on Windows 8 taskbar

Go to the Start Screen search, type Internet Explorer, it'll show the Metro icon for IE, right click, and at the bottom there are four options, choose pin to taskbar.
