Temporarily Disable Internet Connection

Q: Temporarily Disable Internet Connection

I want to know the best way to temporarily disable my net connection. I doesn't have a router and always unplug the power cable of POE adapted to disable my net connection. This sometimes cause problem, internet connection is lost for a long time ( triangle appears for a long time )

So is there any better ways ?

And Is it possible to block that application only from accessing the internet ?

Actually why I want to disable the net connection is I have to use pirated softwares with no valid license / serial no ( they come with a serial no. but that doesn't work ). Disabling the net connection is the only way to avoid this !

Preferred Solution: Temporarily Disable Internet Connection

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A:How do I disable the internet temporarily in Win7 ?

i hope you aren't doing anything naughty.

anyway, you are using the default windows firewall?

type firewall into your start-menu searchbox- choose the 'windows firewall with advanced security' option.

on the left-hand side, click outbound rules - on the right, click 'new rule...'

then select the program you wish to block >> next >> block the connection >> next blah blah blah

I do have to do that, right?

It is not really necessary to disable them for our initial scanning tools, just be sure there are no scheduled scans while running the tools.

Hello and welcome!! I moved your post from Intro's to here.We would need to know which firewall you are using to help you disable it. Or you can look trough here. How To Temporarily Disable Your Anti-virus, Firewall And Anti-malware ProgramsBut this may be easier.........Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system.[/color][/b] Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.Look for "JDK 6 Update 20 (JDK or JRE)".Click the "Download JRE" button to the right.Select your Platform: "Windows".Select your Language: "Multi-language".Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".Click Continue and the page will refresh.Under Required Files, check the box for Windows Offline Installation, click the link below it and save the file to your desktop.Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.Click the Remove or Change/Remove button and follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed. Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u20-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version. If using Windows Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator. When the Java Setup - Welcome window opens, click the Install > button. If offered to install a Toolbar, just uncheck the box before continuing unless you want it.-- Starting with Java 6u10, the uninstaller incorporated in each new release uses Enhanced Auto update to automatically remove the previous version when updating to a later update release. It will not remove older versions, so they will need to be removed manually.-- Java is updated frequently. If you want to be automatically notified of future updates, just turn on the Java Automatic Update feature and you will not have to remember to update when Java releases a new version.Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click Ok and reboot your computer.

I have two internal 750GB HDs - one is partitioned to C (Windows) and the other D (data). The other is E and simply a mirror backup of D which I do once a day.

The problem is that the E drive goes to sleep after XX minutes but some applications or processes (e.g. Empty Recycle Bin) want to wake it up before they work, which means a delay of ~10 seconds as the E drive spins up - very annoying.

How can I temporarily disable the drive until I need it for the once a day backup?

Hello all, I'm about to have a meltdown caused by Win updates. I'm trying to recover data from a 8TB drive, and it's taking an unusually long amount of time (1+ week), but it's progressing and about done. The drive in question is on it's last leg and the BIOS fails SMART, I don't know if I'll have another chance to run this drive for a week. Is there any way to completely disable the reboot until this process is done? I googled this a few times, and there were a few things that made sense, but they were somewhat dated and comments led me to believe that policy updates no longer allowed this. In a corporate environment, auto reboots are a cool idea, but for home use it's not such a swell idea..

Hello,

I was curious if anybody knew this. I could not find it anywhere and had never heard of it. Is there a way to temporarily disable an email account? Like a pause button. So if I 'pause' a specific account (I have approx. 6 email accounts in my Outlook, mostly POP3 & Exchange), when I hit Send/Receive it will not be included, but if I 'unpause' it shall be included. Is there a feature like this?

If this is possible I'd like to implement this in a family members of mine computer. So it must be 'stupid proof' if it is.

How are you disabling it?
go to Start/Run and type ncpa.cpl and press enter,If your connecting with an Ethernet cable right click the Local Area Connection and choose Disable. Or go to Start/Run and type devmgmt.msc and press enter. In the Device Manager expand the Network Adapters heading right click your Network Adapter and choose Disable. No, it has nothing to do with your reading emails, but I suggest you turn it off and get a good free after market firewall like Sygate or Zone Alarm.
The Windows firewall is a basic utility that is, for the most part, worthless.

Hi all,

So I have two internet connections.

The wireless is one I share with my roommates and is fast. The wired NIC connects to a router which has slower internet. The reason I connect to the wired router is so my PC can talk to a linux machine, which I use for some data downloading/analysis.

I want to disable internet from the wired connection but keep the ability to talk to other machines on the wired network. I just changed the IPv4 settings and deleted the DNS server information. Is this the best way to do so? I want the wireless to provide internet.

Thanks!

So I just got a new graphics card (gtx 770) and have noticed after installing it that my display will temporarily losing connection during the windows logo on boot up.

What happens exactly is, startup will be as it always was, and when it gets to the Windows 7 startup logo it freezes mid animation (as the colors are swirling around each other) for about half a second and then my display will lose connection before showing the final stationary windows logo, my display then reconnects as it gets to the login screen.

I know that this is a very minor issue and is not causing any problems, but I am still curious as to what may be causing this to happen, as it did not occur before I installed my new graphics card.

thanks,

A:Display temporarily losing connection during boot

I see that with an NVIDIA GTS450OC video card. I suspect its when Windows loads the driver for the video card. When you first power on and boot, video cards (all video cards) default to their basic "VGA" mode. They only enter whatever mode you have set in Windows after Windows does its startup and loads the video driver.

Anybody knows how to do that ?

A:Temporarily cut Internet, but keep LAN

Many managed and smart switches allow you to enable or disable individual ports. For example if you have 10 computers plugged into ports #1 through #10, and your cable modem is plugged into port #11, you can disable port #11 to turn off the internet connection. Access to the switch is via a web browser interface or telnet.
A switch I have used that has this capability is Netgear GS716T.

A:Wireless Network Connection will only connect to Internet if Lcl Area Connect disable

sounds about right! Your big issue will be the VPN, as it is frequently specifically
config'd to use a specific adaptor AND to force all tcp traffic thru that connection,
even though you want to do some trivial google.com search.

Consider using a Hardware Profile to define
1) a LAN connection environment (ie no WiFi)
2) a WiFi environment (w/o a LAN)

the choice occurs at boot time and the hardware is enabled/disabled per
the profile.

Ok out of nowhere I'm getting this problem. I go into network connections, then I try to disable my lan connection and enable my wireless and bamm...

"Error Disabling Connection- It is not possible to disable the connection at this time. This connection may have one or more protocals that do not support Plug-and-Play"

What the heck?

I've tried a scan on my antivirus software - failed
Ran adaware - failed
Disabled uPnP - failed

I can disable either in the device manager but anytime I tried to enable the wireless I get a "connection failed".

Any help?

Hi Persianlity,

Sorry if i am missing something or misunderstood the question but the screen shot shows that it is just disconnected, this would suggest that you are not connected via the VPN connection at the point of that screen shot being taken.

Is it now showing as disabled?

THIS HELPED ME!!!!

PRB: Cannot Enable or Disable a Network Device from the Network Connections Folder

SYMPTOMS
If you have a network device driver with an unsigned co-installer and you use the Windows XP operating system, you cannot disable or enable the device from the Network Connections folder (that is, you cannot right-click the device and then click Enable/Disable).

You can, however, enable or disable the device from the Device Manager.
CAUSE
The Device Manager runs in the logged-on user context and is, therefore, allowed to disable or enable devices with unsigned co-installers. However, the request from the Network Connections folder to enable or disable devices is sent to a LocalSystem service, which is not allowed to enable or disable devices because an unsigned co-installer cannot be trusted to run in the logged-on user context.
STATUS
This behavior is by design.

I use my Win Vista laptop at home and the office.

I use wifi at home and wired lan at the office. My laptop does have any settings in the TCP/IP properties. Everything is at default.

Every time I I try to use it at the office I have to disable and reenable the Lan connection from Manage networks, otherwise I do not get Net connectivity (except local lan).

No problem at home.

Since everything is default it picks up my IP from DHCP and gets other settings same way.

Why do I have to Disable and Enable the Lan connection before it starts accessing the Net.

A:Enable /disable Lan connection

If you put the laptop to Sleep or Hibernation before disconnecting the cable that may the cause. Try disconnecting the cable first.

The adapter/computer may not be "signing off" the network properly. Make sure you have the latest ethernet driver.

If the laptop is not rebooted from one day to the next, and
the work router or server is reset while the laptop is away, and
the lease time is long enough for the computer to think it still deserves the "old" IP, then that is a problem. Ask the network administrator to shorten the lease time, or shut down when you transport the machine, or live with your work around.

Can the "disable" button be used to disconnect the internet connection, or should I just switch off the modem? ("disable" sounds like you're breaking something.... ) Thanks.

A:"disable" Local Area Connection

The "Disable" tab is just a software switch that allows or disallows your NIC to function. It comes in handy if you have more than one NIC for your computer and only want one used at a time.Personally I have had my cable modem on since '97, expect for moving, black outs, and hardware upgrades. Although it is possible I do not feel it needs to be an essential device to be detached either by unplugging the Cat5 or power. Having your firmware up to date and the router properly configured, along with a software firewall (Not the XP firewall) would be a better approach. Even if you unplug the modem\router\NIC you should consider a software firewall a must have security tool. There are many suggestion but to answer your question it will not hurt to use the disable tab in Windows according to Microsoft.Using local area connectionsIf you disable your local area connection, the connection is no longer automatically activated. Because your hardware profile remembers this, it accommodates your location-based needs as a mobile user. For example, if you travel to a remote sales office and use a separate hardware profile for that location that does not enable your local area connection, you do not waste time waiting for your network adapter to time out. The adapter does not even try to connect.

To connect to the internet using my old IBM notebook 600e, I just boot up or come out of standby mode; click on browser (IE) and it's always ready to go. With the newer Lenovo T61, I must disable the connection before I go on standby, or problems usually result. When I come out of standby, I must enable connection; otherwise the little computer icon is missing from the lower right bar and there is no "repair connecytion option." If I click on "view available networks," none are found. Then it is difficult to get things going again. I use a siemens modem and a Belkin router, but doubt these are responsible as the 600e has no problem.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions. I'd especially appreciate a list (however short or long) of possible things to check.

Hi,

I have been using Windows 7 for a little over a week and today while exploring it some more I noticed I have two network connections listed under Network Connections.

(1) Local Area Connection -- Realtek PCIe GDE Family Controller

and

(2) Wireless Network Connection -- 802.11n Wireless LAN Card

The only computer in the house is mine so I am curious if I can just disable the '802.11n Wireless LAN Card' without causing any problems?

Thanks and regards,

A:Can I disable my Wireless Network Connection?

If your computer is connected via a cable there are generally no problems with disabling the wireless connection.

You can do this from Control Panel|Network and Sharing Centre, Click on change adapter settings, right click the wireless connection, left click on disable.

If your computer is a laptop then there is usually a button on the side or front that will also disable wireless.

Hi
I'm using windows XP professinal SP1
I used an ethernet card to connect my PC to laptop, on which is windows XP home edition. I had to delete norton antivirus programs from laptop.
Then I set up a LAN. My PC can see and configure laptop's files, but laptop can not see/configure PCs'. Laptop cannot connect to internet through the DSL on PC in which I have been using DSL for a long time.
Laptop can disable LAN connection but cannot delete it, but PC can neither disable nor delete LAN. I'm always using an admin account. I also enabled enable/disable LAN connection from group policy, but it is no good.
My PC was infected with some kind of virus norton doesn't detect. Luckily I deleted the virus with NOD32. (It writes some files to windows system32 like: mouse.exe, 1.tmp etc.)
Can some kind of virus spyware be doing this?
Thanks

Hi

How do I disable local area Connection properties for a standard use and for an administrator on a pc, users on my network keep changing the network adapter settings to allow them to have access to the internet. The users are a little tech savvy so by setting the adapter settings and just leaving out the default gateway and dns server address has not helped. I need to go deeper into windows network configuration to find a way to block them or find another way to prevent internet access. None of the users have email so they do not need access to mail either.

Every so often (it could be 5 minutes or an hour) I lose my connection. Then I have to disable and enable my wi-fi adapter (a Linksys USB adapter) to get it to work again. Usually that works until the next disconnection. However, sometimes even when I disable and enable it won't work for a few minutes of waiting and disabling and enabling again. I can connect to either a 5ghz connection or a more standard connection (I can't remember the ghz.. I think it's 2.2-2.4 or something), but I have the same problem either way. I've been having this problem for the past couple weeks or so. Before that I had the exact same connection set up and didn't have the problem.

Hey guys, you know how you can go into the Control Panel, Network Connections, right-click on "Local Area Connection" and set it to disabled, is there a way to do that on a remote PC without taking remote-control of it?

Using a remote control program like VNC, etc. isn't an option. Needs to be done via command console or some other third party software that has that kind of control.

Or if there's a way to remotely disable the NIC from device manager would be another option.

Any help would be much appreciated.

A:Solved: Remotely disable Local Area Connection

if the remote computer is on the same network as you, and you have administrative rights to that computer you can....

right click "My Computer" from your computer then choose manage, then make sure Computer Management (local) is highlighted then choose Action then "connect to another computer" select the computer then highlight Device Manager and disable the NIC from there.

Hi all I'm specific LAN user/enable wireless only Disable for connection setting up a computer for public access to a local site repository There are two accounts admin account running a virtual machine as server for the local site I need access to LAN through wired ethernet in this account Disable LAN connection for specific user/enable wireless only public account the account for the users to navigate the repository I need to disable the LAN access and just enable internet access through the public wireless interface I thought I could just disable ethernet card for the public account on the Group policies but I Disable LAN connection for specific user/enable wireless only didn't find out the way to do it I've created a group policy for the public account but under quot user configuration - gt administrative templates - gt network - gt network connections quot I only see options for enable disable LAN properties settings etc and not LAN access itself --- gt Is it possible to disbable hardware for specifc users In that case I could just disable the wired card driver for public user Thanks in advance

A:Disable LAN connection for specific user/enable wireless only

Ok, I go again (trying to do my best in english!) :

-There are two interfaces in the network:
a- LAN-> access through wired connection. Only for enabled MACs on the router
b- Public access to internet -> through wireless connection. For everyone.

-I cannot use router rules (for instance blocking MAC address, time settings, etc.) as far as I need both connections enabled at the same time, any time: wired for admin account and wireless for standard user account. Both users could use the computer at any time.

-I know I can set up preferred connections, but what I actually want is to prevent any way for the standard user to get connected to the LAN.

-On Group policies I've already disabled access to network settings and IE options for the standard user.

I appreciate any help (and really need it). Thanks!!

Hi,
In the Network Connections / Properties, you will find "TeeFer2 Driver". Uncheck this and your problem would be resolved.

Dear Guys:

I recently just got broadband internet. The problem is, whenever I shut down then restart the computer, I have to disable and enable the Local Area Connection in order for it to connect.

When I click on CHange Adaptor Settings, it shows a Local Area Connection with NVIDIA nFore Network Controller, and a Local Area Connection 2 with MArvell Yukon 88E8053 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller.

In order to get the internet to connect, I have to disable the NVIDIA, not the Marvell Yukon.

Is there any way to he IE proxy settings apply via gpo when users are on the LAN and to be disabled when the laptop users are remote.
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated, as most of the laptop users need to manually change the proxy settings for getting connected to internet.

Hi there and thank you for taking the time to help folks like us recently had a virus which was resolved here and fully cleaned by a professional However there are still some issues from that the virus left behind I've been and To Microsoft Update Local Problem Disable Connection Unable Area told my computer is fully cleaned from all viruses and they are unable to figure out how to solve this issue I'm unable Microsoft Update Problem and Unable To Disable Local Area Connection to disable my Local Area Network I was able to before the virus hit me but after getting it fixed it doesn't allow me anymore Here is the exact error message quot Error Disabling Connection- It is not possible to disable the connection at this time This connection may have one or more protocals that do not support Plug-and-Play or it Microsoft Update Problem and Unable To Disable Local Area Connection may have been initiated by another user or system account quot The virus itself installed a Layed Service Protocal which was use by the hacker to get information off my computer I believe LSPFix was used to help fix that and restore my normal connection I'm thinking the hacker changed one of my settings somewhere such that I'm no longer able to disable my connection or corrupted something I'm admin on my account so I should have sufficient rights to disable it Also I'm having problems with Windows Update I can't seem to quot install quot patch KB When I download it from Windows Update it says it installs successfully and is found in my update history as being successfully installed However when I scan for new updates it shows up KB again and asks me to install it again Before the virus I've also had a similar problem with Microsoft Office asking me to install it sometimes when I visit certain websites but I definately have Office alraedy installed and it just keeps prompting me to install The first Windows update that I had problems with was KB which kept on asking me to reinstall the same update When there were new updates I found that it no longer prompted me to install that one again but it prompted me to install KB again I'll post the logs in the next additional posts Also some additional info I found that the correct versions of the updates were in my dllcache folder however the files in the system file were outdated In addtion I checked my registry and found that SFCDllCacheDir was not there Is that supposed to be like that I've also run QFECheck exe to see which updates were installed correctly and it listed that a whole bunch were not installed correctly which was weird Some did have the same file versions in dllcache and matched the descriptions in the knowledge bases at Microsoft com The error always stated that quot The following files are not valid in the system catalog quot The log is also posted in the additional posts If you want the verbose output I'll post that as well Sorry for the LONG message hopefully you can help me out Thanks a lot

Well I've fiddled around and searched to no avail I have some form of conflict between my main wireless network and a LAN I use for file transfer and streaming The attached PDF file illustrates the setup Basically the wireless network is fine by itself Music streams from the Asus EeePC to the various Squeezeboxes and internet connectivity is without internet wireless connection connection internet stops LAN enabled on all PCs LAN connection without internet stops wireless internet connection and LAN connection without internet stops wireless internet connection the iPad The LAN works well by itself allowing me to use FreeFileSync to quickly and relaible transfer backup music between the Acer dekstop and Asus netbook server PCs and to stream music from the Asus EeePC which is the music server running Logitech Media Server to the Squeezebox However the two networks can't co-exist without the Acer and or Asus losing internet connectivity when their respective LAN connections are made to the Buffalo router they share with the Squeezebox The notification area shows - Currently connected to BuffaloLocalNet No internet access SqueezeNet Internet access Wireless Network Connection SqueezeNet Connected DD-WRT I have attached the ipconfig all output in the out txt file and diagram of the network in Network pdf I suspect this is a simple clash of parameters somewhere or incompatible IP addresses but I'm not good enough to resolve it Thanks GRC

Hello to all,

In our company we have multiple computers running XP. Each computer has it's own installation of XP. When I try to disable the internet access to some of them, everything is fine the internet is disabled, the e-mail is disabled however if they go to:

start then search -
they have the option to search the internet- which pops up an internet search window and the address in the bar is " about:blank."

What the @#!#@ is that and how do I get rid of it.

I apologoze if this is an easy fix but it is driving me nuts.

Thanks in advance

WILL CONNECT to intenet if connected to the router via a cable. Have tried release and reset IP address, reset TCP/IP stack, and reset winsock. Have done re-install of the Linksys software (deleted the connection and followed the add new computer steps in the Linksys program.) In past had a HP laptop running Windows XP that had same problem, but simple IP address release and reset would fix that one. Thanks to anyone who has the fix to this one! Icarus50

A:Working LAN but no internet connection on a laptop; broken wireless connection

can we see the ipconfig /all and an xirrus screen shot

------------------------------------------------------------------------
ipconfig /all
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post results here

We would like to see the results from ipconfig /all post back the results in a reply here

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD then press Enter to open a command prompt box (A new dialogue box - black with white font, will appear on screen ):

In the command prompt window that opens, type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

ipconfig /all > network.txt & network.txt

It will export the results to notepad and then automatically open notepad.

Now all you need to do is copy and paste those results to a reply here
to do that:
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Select all
all the text will be highlighted
Next
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Copy
Now go back to the forum - reply and then right click in the reply box and paste
------------------------------------------------------------------------

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Run Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector
Download and install
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to copy the program across to the faulty PC

http://www.xirrus.com/Products/Wi-Fi-Inspector.aspx
Direct link to the program is here http://wpc.475a.edgecastcdn.net/00475A/XirrusWiFiInspectorSetup.1.2.0.exe

{If the above link does not work heres another link http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_download/fid,77196-order,4/download.html}

Then run and install the program - on a wireless enabled PC/Laptop
if you get an error - You need NET Framework installed for the WiFi Inspector to function.

Run the program

A user guide is available here http://www.xirrus.com/Products/Wi-Fi-Inspector/xirruswifiinspectorguide1-2-0.aspx

post a screen shot of the program running - if there are a lot of networks showing can you click on "networks" top lefthand area - so we can see all the network information, and also post which network "Adapter Name" (1st column) is yours on the list

To post a screen shot of the active window, hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file.
To upload it to the forum, open the full reply window and use the Manage Attachments button to upload it here.
Full details are here http://library.techguy.org/wiki/TSG_Posting_a_Screenshot

Note:
For a reliable (or robust as the Xirrus user guide says) wireless connection you need a signal of about -70 dBm or better.

If you are using the Mac OS then use http://www.istumbler.net/

Hi,

Hoping someone can help.

I have a Sony Vaio laptop running Windows XP with a wireless connection to a broadband router.

Several weeks ago my laptop started dropping the internet connection randomly (I'm alos unabel to access email when this happens).

My wireless network icon in my toolbar shows the connection as 'Excellent' but for some reason both Internet and Email is not available. The only way to fix the problem has been to restart my laptop which is very frustrating.

I've noticed that this also happens randomly when I'm at home (using different wireless broadband modem) so I think the issue is my laptop not the 2 x routers/modems.

I'm running NOD32 for security as well (but have been for 4 years now with no problems till now).

Please help.

Cannot connect to home wireless network with Toshiba Satellite laptop running Vista with SP2. Other family wireless devices working fine and good internet connection using ethernet cable from my laptop to router.

Problem just started today after trying public free wireless in airport early today. Would not connect and got a security certificate warning on another free internet network. So, did not use. Internet worked fine tethered to my phone.

I have an internal wireless g card and a usb plug-in wireless n adapter. Neither one works now. In network status section of control panel shows good network connection but red X before internet connection icon.

I ran a Norton scan and Malwarebytes scan in safe mode with no issues. Also tried to connect wireless in safe mode with no success.

Lastly I did system restore to a few days ago when wireless connection was working fine. No success there either.

A:Enable and disable Internet

What? Is disabling the adaptor too hard? I'm sure there's something for this, but uh... really..?

Or do you want to disable Internet access and still have LAN access?

Is there any way to disable Internet Explorer in Windows 2000 or XP? I want to prevent users from getting to the internet. I would like to do something a little more sophisticated than hiding the Internet Explorer links and icons. I don't want to purchase a proxy server, either - unless there is an inexpensive solution you can suggest.

Thanks!

Hi all this is my first post here I'm interested in knowing if it's possible Disable Internet Access? to disable the all Internet access on my Windows XP Professional SP machine More than that I need to know if that kind of tinkering can be password protected I have a sneaking suspicion there's an easy way to do both those things but all the same I don't really know where to Disable Internet Access? begin looking Here's the deal I don't want my Windows machine to be able to access the Internet without having a password entered I want it to be friggin' impossible to get around it for anyone who isn't an advanced hacker All browsers all profiles no Internet without entering a password Is it possible I thought about replacing my motherboard with one that doesn't have an onboard network card but I'm not sure those are even made If this no Internet password thing can't be worked out I'll have to take extreme measures and hop over to the motherboard forum and ask how to permanently disable aka destroy my onboard network card Disable Internet Access? Any help would be greatly appreciated Just so you know you needn't go out of your way to be overly basic in your explainations I've been using Disable Internet Access? computers constantly for about years now as a gamer and multimedia enthusiast Although I'm certainly no technical wizard I do at least know Windows and computers in general at a mostly intermediate level I've shyed away from all intermediate to advanced networking-related stuff because it's always confused the hell out of me and never much affected my gaming and multimedia processing

A:Disable Internet Access?

Depends on HOW you connect. Dialup or Broadband (DSL or cable).

The simplest way is to disable the device (modem or LAN card) in Device Manager. Right-click the card, select Disable.

Just in case:

There is an easy way to make a LAN-based connection act like a Dialup. That is, you have to enable connection FIRST.
Open Network Connections and find your LAN connection
Suggest you rename the connection to something more meaningful (right-click connection and select Rename), example AT&T DSL Lan
Right-click the connection, select Properties and ENSURE that BOTH boxes are check at the bottom of the General tab dialog (Connection Icon shows ALL THE TIME)
Now drag-and-drop a SHORTCUT to your desktop (or wherever)
Now to disconnect, you right-click the Connection Icon in your Taskbar Tray, and select Disable.

To make LAN connection, just click/double-click the shortcut you created to the Network Connection, this will automatically re-enable the LAN.

I use this method at home since I do not want to be online all the time.
