Showing JPEG images in thumbnails

Q: Showing JPEG images in thumbnails

I'm running Windows 2000, and I want to be able to see JPEG images when I select "Thumbnails" under the View menu. Currently, the only images that display are Windows bit map images (BMP). I know it's possible to see JPEG windows as thumbnails under Windows 2000 because I used to have a different computer that ran 2000 and did display JPEGs. However, I got a new computer that doesn't. I'm assuming there is a way to tell Windows 2000 to display JPEG images in thumbnails, but I can't find any reference to thumbnail views in Windows help or on the Microsoft website.

Any suggestions, please?

Preferred Solution: Showing JPEG images in thumbnails

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, I have been scanning my old photos into my pc, then burning them on CDs and viewing thru my DVD. I have 2 x dvds, 1 cheap (Magnavox) and one even cheaper... They work beautifully. I have started doing this for other people - however quite a few DVD players won't play my CD like my cheap ones do! I've been saving the files as JPEG. Question is: Is there a file type I can make the photos that will show on ALL dvd players? I am using XP professional and Canoscan scanner which scans slides/film/photos. Would appreciate any help you can offer.. Thanks heaps. Bevie.

Just within the past week or so, when viewing pics in windows explorer, only some of the thumbnails will show the image they are representing. Some won't. I tried rebuilding the library and doing Disk Cleanup to delete them so they'd rebuild; I've checked/unchecked the "show icons not thumbs" to see if that would kick it into showing it. Nothing has helped.
Also, maybe related, when opening up any Windows explorer window, the green bar at the top is very slow to load all the way to the right, sometimes never getting to the other side.

Windows no longer shows the handy previews for JPEGS and BMP anymore. It still shows html, and word/excel docs in the preview window though.

How do I get that working again?

(Using W98 with IE5)

A:JPEG/BMP thumbnails

E-mailed you a registry patch to fix that. If you would rather fix it yourself, then make sure the following registry keys are set up:

. . . ShellEx
. . . . . .{BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}

The value in that last humongous key should be (Default)="{7376D660-C583-11d0-A3A5-00C04FD706EC}" without the quotes. It should look like this:

Then create an identical registry key as above, except instead of a ".jpg" reg key, you would have a ".bmp" reg. key. It's easier to use the registry file I sent you, but if you'd rather fix it yourself, I included the above.

Hello, just got this laptop. It came with ubuntu, but loaded Win 7 64bit on it. All drivers on place. It works alright, but noticed this nasty bug that is driving me mad: It shows corrupted thumbnails on "big" jpgs. It can show huge tiff files (like 200mb and big resolution) as thumbnail, but it seems to really struggle with jpegs bigger than 1500px which is silly. Please dont refer me to Windows support forum, because i have seen people ask for help on similar issues and they just copy and paste responses that arent even helpful. I have seen good answers here so i think you guys might know whats up. Thanks!

In the last day, I'm experiencing problems browsing pictures (mainly jpegs) in My Pictures. When I open the subfolders in that folder, thumbnails are slow to load. Even if the view is set to 'details', the mini icons against the file name build very slowly. This wasn't happening until yesterday when I loaded some images to a subfolder in My Pictutes from a CD.

If I try to navigate away from the folder, my computer freezes.

I have tried deleting all the pictures I loaded yesterday and have defrag'd, but still getting the slow behaviour.

Running Windows XP.

I compressed a jpeg image using picture manager. I wanted to email a few pictues easier and used the email messages selection under the compression tab. Now the pic is too small and I can't figure out how to enlarge to picture without it being blurry and pixilated. Is decompression an option? Thanks!! Jennifer

A:I need help uncompressing jpeg images

Unfortunately, there's nothing you can do to restore the original picture from the emailed versions. Depending on the software and/or email program you're using, it's probably resized the image to lower resolution, which is NOT the same as compression. Also, JPEG is what's known as "lossy compression", which means it makes images smaller by discarding some of the image data, and once that data is gone, it's gone.

Your only hope is that you still have the unaltered originals on your computer - again depending on the software (I'm not familiar with Picture Manager), the resized version that's emailed may be a new copy and the original is still intact.

And this is my problem. I applied a custom folder icon in regedit and for it to work you had to check "always show icons, never thumbnails" but now i cant see thumbnails on images. Like this: no thumbnails. And i really want to view thumbnails on my images.

My problem started sometime in the end of December. I have Vista and Photoshop Elements 7 on my PC and somehow my .NEF and .JPG images start getting corrupted. In the beginning Photoshop told me that there was 'an unexpected end-of-file error' in some of the NEF images.
The result was that I couldn't view the images correctly and also when I tried to save as JPG the problem was the same.

Now I have totally reinstalled Vista etc and the problem has changed a bit.
Sometimes the images look ok in one application (e.g. Windows Photo Gallery) but corrupted in another (photoshop) like below, but the problem is that sometimes it is the other way around, meaning that the problem is not really consistent.

.NEF images have the same problem - in one application they may look good, and in another they look bad.

several of the photos will not display even though other photos, taken on the same camera, at the same time, saved in the same folder, of the same type will display just fine. I have one folder where out of 30 photos (my grandson's birthday), only ONE will display on the TV. Other folders may have none to several images which won't show on-screen. Vista Home Premium SP2. When browsing folders of digital photos, Explorer will load up all of the thumbnails, and as soon as it has the last one loaded, 95% of the photos will revert to the default icon and I'll end up with thumbnail views of only 2 or 3 images out of 75 or 80. If I change the thumbnail size, it'll "rescan" the folder, load all thumbs, and then revert 95% random ones back to the default icon. This makes it nearly impossible to organize my photos and is VERY annoying and problematic!

At least that is what works with my Win7 Ult. But then I use the Extra Large Icons view for pictures and don't get the .thumbs part.

I'm using images I have print-screened to insert into a document and I can't do this if they aren't JPEGs... (as far as I know!)

I can't figure out how to convert an image to a JPEG using paint or Microsoft Office... can anyone help please?

Hi Whilst on holiday I accidently wiped all the images from my digital camera s memory card not overly clever I admit When I got home I sent the card to a data recovery specialist who restored the images Corrupt - Images Thumbnails; Incomplete Pictures Full from the card to a DVD and sent it to me When I load the DVD and navigate to the pictures on my computer however the initial thumnails for the pictures load showing all of the details of the photo but then seem to automatically refresh a second later this time showing big grey-ed out areas in the photos If I then open the images the grey areas also appear It sounds a bit weird I know But it seems that the data for the whole picture may be there given that the thumbnail initially shows the whole picture Corrupt Images - Full Thumbnails; Incomplete Pictures Am I being too optimistic or is there a chance I can recover the whole of the pictures still Many thanks for any help anyone is able to provide Cheers David nbsp

Hello, this has been quite a while just now I like really need them.
I know for a fact that a new OS reinstall would fix this, but I don't want to do that, that's why I am here.

Some of the JPEG images I have in folders won't display. It just shows a blank icon where the photograph or picture should be.
Whenever I try clicking on one of the blank picture icons Windows Photo Viewer automatically tries to open it up and I get the following error message: "Windows Photo Viewer can't open this picture because either Photo Viewer doesn't support this file format, or you don't have the latest updates to Photo Viewer."

Keep in mind these are just plain old JPEG images. They displayed just fine in Windows XP which was what I was using when I transferred these pictures from out of my old computer.

If it is Windows Photo Viewer that is the culprit, then how do you update it? If it is something else, what could it be?

Thank you

this problem only started recently, so I must have inadvertantly changed something. When I try to open an image with windows picture and fax viewer, which is the default image viewer when I double click on the thumbnail image, I sometimes get an even smaller thumbnail, with the "window" itself only about 1" high, but across the full length of the screen. the thumbnail is a tiny 1/4" square!! it goes full size when I click on the maximize button. How can I reset it to always open full size? thank you!

I have removed it, but I cannot change the wallpaper through Control Panel > Personalization > Desktop Background; when I look at the wallpapers stored in Windows Wallpapers, I see the file names but no thumbnails.

I have the same exact problem in my Pictures directory, none of my pictures' thumbnails show. How do I fix this?

The pictures load normally if I double click on them, I can start slideshows, etc., but they are not displaying correctly in explorer.

Some of the thumbnails aren't showing up windows explorer even though they are the same file type. There will be 12 episodes of a show in .AVI or .MKV, and only 9 will have thumbnails, the other 3 don't. I have the Haali Media Splitter on to show thumbnails and I installed the Windows Service Pack to to it too (not sure which one is actually working, if I had to guess I'd say it's Haali).

To enable the thumbnails on Haali Media Splitter I click it, the went: options → explorer integration → show thumbnails (yes) → thumbnails offset (10000)

Not sure what is wrong...can anyone help?

And this is a problem with pretty much all the file types, some thumbnails showing and some not when they're in the same folder and I got them from the same source (all the files in a folder are either AVI or MKV, but the problem happens with both)

There is a registry issue where sometimes the explorer cannot locate the thumbnails
and there for when browsing through the folder some files dont have a thumbnail but
a generic symbol for the type of folder it is, You can fix it by following the next procedure

1) Save the Registry Fix file as Registry.cmd
2) Then run the batch file with elevated administrator privileges.

And you should see an improvement,

Sometimes, I open Explorer, and if I try to expand the Folder Tree on the left panel it won't expand, The Files are on an External Flash Drive. I've tried many troubleshooting searches for the problem so yes, I have the Folder Option, "View" set to "Display thumbnails." This is a recent problem. I have checked in the only two places I was aware of that would cause this:

Folder Options - View ....however, there is no option there to check show Thumbnails. I believe this option should be there at the top, but it isnt.

But for whatever reason, I only see icons when I should see thumbnails. And yes, I have changed the view to Medium, large, extra large.

VLC is not showing thumbnails view of video files. My Video files are generally flv. I have not checked whether it is showing thumbnails for other type of video files or not.

For some reason the image icons aren't loading and I can't see the thumbnails

Here's a screenshot...

Windows explorer on my system cannot display all the thumbnails my photo folder. When the pictures are copied to a newly created folder, all are initially shown. However when I access the folder later, a lot of the thumbnails are gone : only the default
icons are shown.
I have set folder options to Always show icons, never thumbnails.
I have even tried deleting the thumbnail cache and rebuilding the cache but to no avail.
Could anyone help me on this please?
