Windows 2000 - laptop power settings get reset

Q: Windows 2000 - laptop power settings get reset

Greetings,

I have a Windows 2000 laptop (Toshiba).

I set my power settings to Never Turn Off Monitor, Never Turn Off Hard disks, Never System Standby.

Whenever I turn the machine back on, the settins are reset to 5 minutes for all three tasks.

Is there a registry setting I can change to not reset on every boot-up?

Thanks in advance,

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a dell inspiron 1000. Older model, runs windows xp. I just simply want to reset to factory settings but am not sure of what key combonation to use. Ive called dell, they wont help because my warranty is up and they asked me to pay 50 dollars for a month warranty. Id much rather donate such an amount to someone more grateful. Also being that it is a laptop it also is having a battery recalibration problem, wondering if it needs a new battery or if thats even possible. Starting to feel completly helpless with these simple problems, if anyone could help id be forever grateful.

A:How do I reset my laptop to its factory settings?

You don't tell us the model but on most HP laptops you can access a recovery partition and program by tapping F11 as you power up. Not sure this will work if an admin password is set. But it should since that just blocks changing BIOS settings. If you want more help we will need the model number and version of Windows

Recovery From CD:

Insert your installation disc into the driver and reboot your PC,Upon reboot the pc will ask if you want to load from the disc, hit enter and the system should start to load from the disk

You can then select to Repair or Install the Operating system, follow the instructions on screen

From Recovery Partition:

Switch your PC off and reboot

Tap F8 until your boot screen is infront of you and select "Repair Your Computer" You should now have your "System Recovery Console" on screen

Select "Windows Complete PC Restore" and follow the instructions,

This will now restore your PC back to the Manufacturers settings

The method to boot to the restore partition might vary with the gateway model but it looks to be either using the F11 key by itself or ALT and F11 together. You'd press those keys while the posting or logo screen is showing and before windows starts loading. What model do you have?

Earlier this afternoon I switched my power settings to power saver as my laptop was dieing.

I shut it down like this.

I hooked it back up to power and switched back to high performance power setting.

However, while playing games the performance is horrible. I even switched back to power saver while playing and it made no difference.

Any ideas?

Hi there,

I have a Compaq Presario C700 laptop running Windows Vista Home Premium.
It is an Intel dual CPU T2310 @ 1.46 GHz
There is 1 GB RAM

Some time back it began to run very slowly.
After trying various things (virus and malware scans, check disc, defragmenting and disk clean-up included) I decided to reset to factory settings.
Things are still as slow as ever though.

I would very much appreciate any help before I decide to give up and get a new laptop.

Thanks.

Paul

A:Incredibly slow laptop even after reset to factory settings.

FWIW:  1GB of RAM...isn't very much for a system that has OEM-installed overhead and also has applications installed which may tax the capabilities of the system.  There are other factors which may contribute to system slowness.

It is possible you can get better speeds without resetting it but we need more information. Is it slow all the time or just doing certain things? (surfing, downloading, using programs etc) If you can download the following it'll help us take a look at what might be happening.

Download and run Speccy http://www.piriform.com/speccy when done, click File/Publish Snapshot and it will provide you a link to copy and paste here.

Hi!  The 840 G3 appears to have a battery compartment that is secured by screws.  Sometimes there is a combination of keys that can be pressed that will simulate the function of a power reset (powering the laptop down, removing the battery, pressing the power button for a length of time to drain capacitors, replacing battery, and powering up) so that users don't have to remove the battery.  I've googled and found some key combinations for other HP products but can't find one for the 840 G3.  Does anyone know of one? Thanks!

A:How to power reset 840 G3 laptop

Hi, Thank you for posting in the HP Support forum. Welcome! I am not 100% sure if I understand you but I'll try to help. As mentioned by you and as confirmed by the product's manual, it comes with non-removable fixed battery. May be you want to perform hard reset to power off the computer >> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5NJQM8vJa9Q Why do you want to perform this you write about ? Is there some issues with Windows ? If so, have you tried restarting it (instead of Shut down) ?  Because in Windows 8/8.1/10 this process is by default different from what it was in Windows XP/Vista/7.

Hi.
Due to my inspiron15 Dell laptop running extremely slow, I did a factory reset to original factory settings. It worked fine and the laptop came with Windows 8. I decided to upgrade to Windows 10 using the free one still available from Microsoft for people who use disability functions (my mum uses magnifications). However, when turning on it gets stuck on the Dell Logo page with no bar underneath. I have attempted another factory restore as I have managed to get it to run automatic repair but it says that the partition has changed and there is no restore point to work from and won't let me continue. Can you please suggest what I may do to fix this problem?

On my laptop, running XP, I use to have an option in my power options which
had several options in the dropdown for actions to take when I close the lid.
I now have only " Do nothing". I had to reload my OS. but I don't remember
having to do anything special the last time I reloaded the OS. Specifically,
I want the system to hibernate. How do I get that function? I do not have a
"Hibernate" tab.

Hey guys, I've had a little problem with my laptop. I had closed it this morning and went to class then to other places...I just got back, opened up the lid and turned it on...the screen had turned a lot darker, and I had forgotten how to brighten it up so I thought I'd restart it. Well...after restarting it...everything appeared as if it was brand new, except the programs and stuff were there, but my start menu was cleared, all my personal settings for Windows XP was cleared...and I ended up having to brighten up the screen after I found out how. Does anyone know what this could be? I think I had a virus recently but I'm not sure I got rid of it properly. Any ideas?

I've been trying to get rid of whatever virus I have by going back to original factory settings. It makes like it is running the reformat but never does. Windows stays open, it periodically accesses the hard drive, etc. I did not make a bootable disk but still can. I'm afraid that it would be infected and would be worthless. the microsoft help people told me to get a copy of Win 7 on a disk, which for me would mean buying one. I haven't gotten to Dell What do I do? Right now I'm really afraid to use it so I went back to my old HP laptop.

The machine runs Windows 7 Pro 32 bit. on a Dell Vostro desktop.

I've tried several password reset programs, but they won't boot. The machine will however boot to CD.
So, anybody know of a password reset program with bootable .iso that will work on this old machine?

I am using a new Dell laptop with I5 processor and Windows 8.1.  My problem is that I cannot find out how to prevent the screen from blanking after 10 minutes of no keyboard entry.  This is happening to the secondary monitor on an extended desktop setup.  The primary monitor (built in display) stays up but the secondary will go black.  Anybody got an idea of what is going on?

Just thought that when I'm just running the built in display, the screen will blank shortly even though the power settings are set to 3 hours to dim and never to blank the display.

Maybe it's the screen saver.  I need to check that!

Well, the screen saver was set to blank after 10 min.  I changed that setting and it probably will fix my issue.  I don't know why I didn't think of looking there before I posted...

I downloaded Windows 10 a few days ago, and every time I turn off my computer and log back in, my mouse settings revert back to their defaults. The defaults have a lot of annoying extra features, and the scroll is backwards. Every time I change the mouse settings to my preferences and apply them, on the next restart they are back to defaults.

Any tips on how to make my settings permanent? I'm sure once a patch or two for Windows 10 comes in the problem will sort itself out, but in the meantime, any suggestions?

Thanks

Hi I followed the excellent tutorial on here to reset windows mail by deleting from the registy and all the data in the user/appdat/windows mail folder.
Everytime I restart it it brings back some of the settings from previously eg the pop account settings and the title "outlook express provided by Freeeserve" The initial transfer was done from XP using the easy transfer wizard so I am guessing there must be some outlook express settings in the registry it's using to reconstruct windows Mail?
Any ideas how to delete it. The problem I have is that Windows Mail crashes and restarts when ever I close the program. I have tried disabling AV.
If I create a fresh user it is fine but there is another issue in copying all my settings over so I dont want to use a new profile really.
Any tips much appreciated.

Hello Mapzza,

I guess since you have used the Easy Transfer it might have transferred the Outlook Express setting as well. Follow this KB OLEXP: How to Manually Uninstall and Reinstall Outlook Express on Windows Millennium this will speak how to manually remove Outlook Express i guess this should apply for you.

Hope this helps,

A:Cannot Reset my Windows 8.1 Computer to Factory Settings

Hello, and Welcome

The problem is when a person updates 8 to 8.1 through the store, you lose the ability to do a factory reset or refresh.

http://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1183043-caution-you-may-lose-resetrefresh-if-you-upgrade-to-windows-81/

There is a work-around on the above link.

Another option:
Get the windows key using produkey. The key is embedded in the BIOS of all OEM windows 8 computers. Go here to download the 8.1 media iso and you can install Windows 8.1 or try the workaround in the above link.

Backup any important data first.

I recently upgraded my Dell CP Latitude notebook computer to Windows 2000. Everything was working fine before the upgrade. Now, I have a functional mouse for random periods of time and then the mouse pointer will freeze. I cannot get the mouse to move. Nothing else is locked up, ie the keyboard works fine. The mouse is a serial mouse connect to com1. I have check the event log and get the message "the mouse reset failed" with a source if i8042prt. A search on the Microsoft site did not have this message.

*I have change no IRQ settings so I can't imagine a device conflict.
*My mouse is a microsoft intellimouse and I am using the driver windows 2000 selected.
*I have reinstalled the driver but it did not help.

After reset, the mouse will be fully operational. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi guys,

I think that the latest Windows 10 update might have reset my windows to the default (initial/standard) settings. I leave my PC ON over the night and when I woke up the PC seemed to have restarted over night (I say to myself it might have been that the power went off sometime over the night or that windows freaking 10 updates restarted my PC), and now I have all of the settings I did to windows back to their default state and all the file associations are reset back to default. Even the video player settings are reset to default.

What the **** just happen ?

A:Windows 2000 Display Settings Problem

MTG, Welcome to TSG.
It may be your Display Adapter,(graphics card) drivers have become corrupted. Do you know what graphics card your PC has? If so, go to their web site and download and install the latest driver version for your 2000 machine and card.
If you aren't sure what card you have, you can find out by using this program:
http://www.lavalys.com/products/overview.php?pid=1&lang=en
It's free and will tell you nearly everything.
Look under the Display/ GPU and it should give your the info and a link to go to. Any problems you may have, post back to this thread and someone will be glad to help yousort it out.

The windows 2000 that I was running stopped booting due to a corrupt system file. I therefore reinstalled windows. It seems to have worked, but now my window is only half the size of the monitor. I've tinkered with the display settings, but I cannot change the pixal settings, or adjust the window to monitor ratio. Any suggestions on how to fit the window to the monitor screen? (this is a labtop and thus the monitor does not have it's own menues and settings).

Thanks,

Devin

So about an hour ago my computer decided to crap out on my, when on reset my ASUS informed me that there was a power surge and was prevented. But now all I can do is access my OS via Safe Mode even if I choose to "Start Windows Normally". If I do it simply forces it into Safe Mode again. I'm at a complete loss if this is a software problem (I'm hoping so). Or if my motherboard or something else internally has been compromised or damaged when said surge happened.

Any thoughts on this or possible solutions?

Try unplugging the PC from the mains power for a minute or two. Also try loading defaults in BIOS.

I have been attempting to underclock my CPU to reduce heat during gaming. I have tried using both AMD Vision Engine CPU power setting and the windows 7 power options for min/max state. The settings apply fine but as soon as I fire up any game or full screen app, they reset back to maximum and the overheating ensues. If I run the game in windowed mode, the settings are kept and working.
I guess I am probably missing something here, so if anyone can offer some advice it would be appreciated.

PC has Windows 2000 on it. As soon as the power is connected (doesn't wait for a manual power switch) the pc tries to boot up, but doesn't get far at all. No graphics, it just beeps constantly. The beep are as follows; beep pause beep pause etc...

I don't know what to do with it as the information on the hard disc is important.

I would appreciate any advice you may have to give.

it could be a memory issue or a video card issue. try opening your pc and reconnect your video card and so as the memory module it should be set properly to its slot.

hey guys,
I build out tons of machines of all makes and models for demo scenarios. One of the things that is the same on all devices is our custom power settings.

Is there a way to copy the power settings and apply them to any new laptop we build out?

Example:

Laptop 1: Power settings are set to never go to sleep, not require passwords on wake up, brightness set to max, disable adaptive brightness.

I am hoping to be able to run a batch file or something to accomplish this on every machine I build out.

Anyone know of a way to do this? Or have done it before?

Thanks,

Fireballbrady

I leave my PC running 24/7, with only the occasional and require reboots.

For some time now, I have found that windows does not come to life when I have left it unattended for several hours, and I have to restart it. This is annoying as I have some software running continually which needs access to the outside world if you like. Actually it gets data from a external weather station, and if it can't then I have to wait while it gets updated as soon as I restart windows.

My settings are 'Never turn off the Display', as I do that, and 'Never put the computer to sleep' because I don't want it that way.

I save the settings, and a couple of hours later, or after a reboot, I recheck, and they have been changed back to Turn off Display 1 hour, and Put Computer to sleep after 1 Hour, regardless of me saving the changes I made.

A:Windows will not save my power settings

Running win 2000 pro SP4. every time i reboot, certain program settings are lost. for example, my zonealarm settings are lost, and all program net access authorizations have to be re-authorized, when the programs attempt to connect to the net. It will not remember the "always use this answer" option, that you can check in zonealarm to keep from having to continue to re-authorize the program each time it is run. Does anyone know what could be causing this? thanks in advance for any advice..

A:Solved: Windows 2000 pro forgets zonealarm settings every time i reboot

Hiya

I was about to move this to Software, but you say other programs are having problems.

Which version of ZoneAlarm are you running, free or pro? Is it just the initial startup on the internet that it forgets, or any programs that are wanting to go out/come in? If its the former, have a look at this:

Depending on your version (I'm on Pro), look for this:

Program Control tab, Main option. On the Alert Adviser, is it set to Auto or Manual? Also, the same for Program Control.

Hi all,

I am trying to figure out if there is a registry hack that will retain power options set on Windows 2000 pcs. As far as I know, every time the power settings (schemes) are changed in the control panel, it reverts back after a reboot. Is there a registry hack that will retain those power settings?

Thanks in advance,

A:Windows 2000 Registry Power Options

XP Answer

Of course you know editing the registry is dangerous. More so because the edit you are requesting involves loading user profiles. You know how grumpy people can become if you mess their stuff up.

In XP

Setup: Permissions to edit registry

Performance Steps

1. Navigate to Start\Run and type REGEDIT.
2. Highlight the HKEY\USERS registry key
3. From the FILE menu select LOAD HIVE
4. Browse to C:\Documents and Settings\Default User and select NTUSER.DAT and click OK.
5. Next you are prompted for a name. Type NTUSER and press enter.
6. You will now see a NTUSER registry key under HKEY\USERS.
7. Highlight the NTUSER\Control Pannel\PowerCfg key.
8. In the right pane you will see Current Power Policy with a value of 0-4, change this to a value of 1 for laptop, 3 for always on, 0 for home ofice.
9. Highlight the NTUSER key.
10. From the FILE menu select UNLOAD HIVE. Confirm that you want to close all sub-keys.
11. From the FILE menu select EXIT.
12. Log off current user and test registry edit by logging in as a user and check the power options in the control panel. It should be set to always on.
13. End Task.

Note: This is for XP but the principle should be the same for 2K. You should be aware that for every user profile already created there is a NTUSER.DAT file. You would need to repeat the process for each user. The default user is to take care of future users.

Have used this fix on over at least200 XP systems. Good luck

I am trying to solve this problem for a client. They have a Windows 2003 server,
and 4 windows XP workstations, and 2 Windows 2000 Professional workstations which
are part of a domain. The 2 windows 2k workstations take about 15 - 20 minutes
to load. When they get to the step where they load the personal settings and computer
settings, it takes forever. We have had no problems with the windows XP workstations,
and the problem just started recently with the Win2k machines. Im wondering if this is some kind of new Win2k problem with loading the settings from the server or what the cause is. Once the machine loads it runs perfectly.

any help would be greatly appreciated

I have a power settings GPO set with the following settings:

- Turn off the display after 15 minutes

I also have a screensaver GPO that turns on the blank screensaver after 30 minutes. It's set to display the logon screen on resume. In Windows XP & Windows 7, this works flawlessly. After 30 minutes the logon screen appears when resuming.

On my Windows 8 computers, I find that the policies & settings are properly applied but the logon screen is displayed after only 15 minutes. The only thing I have set to 15 minutes is the above GPO to turn off the monitor.

PS - It seems that the log on screen always appears as soon as the display is set to shut off. I tried changing it to 1 minute & the logon screen appeared when resuming.

I can't seem to figure out why this is happening. Any ideas?

First Right Click anywhere blank on your Desktop and go to Properties.
Then you click the Screen Saver tab at the top of the Display Properties window. Then click on the Power button at the bottom right of the page.
Then the Power Options Properties window will open and change the time settings accordingly to what you would like.
When done click OK on all open windows to close them and you're done.

Power button command on "Shut Down"

I've been trying to change my power options. I go into Power Saver, "change plan settings," and try to change the "On battery" setting from "Put the computer to sleep: 3 minutes" to "Put the computer to sleep: Never." (I want to make this change because I have a Dell XPS, and it can have difficulties waking up from sleep.)

I've made this change a number of times, but after a while my computer simply reverts back to the 3 minute setting on its own. So, I leave the machine alone for a few minutes, I come back, and it's asleep...even though I thought I had changed the setting to 30 minutes. And in fact, I *had* changed the setting to 30 minutes; the computer is somehow reverting to 3 minutes on its own.

Anyone else experienced this? Got an answer? Thanks!

You might check if Dell's power management software is installed, that would explain your problem. Your power plans should be changed from there.

Was wondering whether or not Windows 7 power settings actually do anything to a system SSD? If I have a system set to turn off the "hard drives" after 20 minutes, but have Sleep disabled, is it any slower to awaken from having the disk turned off when that disk is an SSD? And is there actually an power savings to be had when doing so?

A:Do Windows HDD power settings have any effect on SSDs?

Hello Carson,

Nope. They will not affect SSDs. Only HDDs.

Hard Drive - Turn Off Hard Disk After Idle or Never

It depends on how often you access the HDD, and how long the HDD stays turned off for how much power you may save. Either way, the more you save the better. It can add up to save a little bit on your electric bill for the year.

There is a delay of a few moments as the HDD spins back up when trying to access it after it has been turned off. If you do this often, then it can get annoying. You would just need to adjust your settings to fit your needs to help with this though.

I replaced my Hard Drive this summer and reinstalled Windows 7 with the Disk that came with my Laptop. Ever since then my computer will not accept custom changes.

For instance I change the power settings so that the CPU doesn't turn off when the laptop is plugged in or I change the time before the screen turns off but they are not implemented. When I go into the control panel I see that the settings are exactly how I set them but the computer doesn't change what it's doing.

For instance if I change the time before screen turns of when computer is idle to never, the screen still shuts off after 1 minute even though I can see in the control panel that it has been set to never. I am selecting save changes.

Any ideas?

A:Windows 7 not implementing custom changes/ power settings

Hi,
I'm not sure but if I remember correctly the screen changes can be made in the power menu as well as the display menu. There is also a difference in the shut downs when you are on AC power or strictly battery.

Critical Level: 5%/5%
Critical action: Hibernate/Hibernate

Low Battery Level: 7%/10%

I'm not having any problems with Windows, but this message is annoying. Theoretically when the battery hits 5% remaining, windows will gracefully hibernate and I can resume it without any problems. But that isn't what is happening.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

I been noticing lately that every time I open my power settings in the control panel it shows the quot Balanced Plan quot ticked despite the fact that I've changed it to quot High Performance quot several times in the last 7 reverting Balanced ]... to back Plan settings [ Windows keeps Power month Another thing that concerns me is that usually whenever you make any changes to settings the quot Save quot button at the bottom of the page is supposed to be highlighted or in other words able to be ticked but every time I visit my power settings through the control panel the Save button is never highlighted so I can't even click on Save even if I wanted to I usually just exit the control panel explorer once I made the changes I want but as I mentioned it seems to just revert right back to the Balanced Plan option upon re-opening of the Power Settings Maybe the fact that I cannot click the Save Button is the problem The only thing I can think of which may or may not have caused this problem is the fact Windows 7 Power settings keeps reverting back to [ Balanced Plan ]... that I was making several tweaks to the system using the Advanced management options mostly to shut off options that I didn't need to have running and to tighten my overall system security etc but I don't specifically recall ever coming across an option that would restrict me making changes to the Power settings In fact if I did find something like that through Advanced Management options I would have made sure that quot High Performance quot was the option I wanted to keep The changes I did make were quite some time ago so I guess its possible that I may have forgotten making any changes relative to this problem but if that is not the cause then maybe there is a registry adjustment correction that can be made but of that I'm not too sure Any insight into this issue would be much appreciated Thank you
