I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hey
I just came on the net and my sygate firewall said
"Denial of Service Attack is Logged" source ip 203.235.222.234

Sygate said this about it:

Denial of Service "Code Red" attack detected.
Description:
A Code Red attack from outside is detected, it is a very dangerous virus that will deface your webpages, perform a denial-of-service attack, and even crash your system.

what does it exactly mean?

A:Denial of Service Attack

Hi,

For some background info read here :

http://www.ciac.org/ciac/bulletins/l-117.shtml

Is the IP address you quoted your own - or the source ? I use Sygate as well but have found that the 'look up' function is not very useful when trying to trace the source of an intrusion. However I understand this to be because it is so easy for hackers to 'spoof' an IP address to avoid detection - not a fault of the firewall.

If you want to make sure you pc is as secure as possible then read more here :

http://www.cexx.org

http://www.wilders.org

http://www.pcflank.com

The first two have info / downloads for better protecting your system. The last has tests to run so you can ensure your system is safe on the net.

I know someone who is threatening to use DoS attacks on me. I have a firewall, but I don't think that it can protect me if he tries to mass ping me. Is there some sort of program that I can download to prevent these types of attacks, as well as some others hopefully??

Could the University of Sussex's website (www.sussex.ac.uk) be undergoing a denial of service attack? When you go to their website it says it is too busy. I cannot see it being that busy on a Sunday night. It looks nothing like a message you would put up if the site was down for maintenance?

A:Denial Of Service Attack

I would say yes to the denial of service attack or something similar. I just tried the link you posted and got the same message as you did. BTW, I'm in the U.S.

I seem to be having trouble with both of my PC's (dell dim 2400's with XP home) accessing the Windows Update site. I can never get on and get the usual page suggesting to try later or try downloading manually, which I can't do either.

None of my System Restore points work (on either one)! Also, our DSL connection is working fine, as for as IE6 goes. (I can get Google, Yahoo, Bestbuy.com, ect.)

I can't access the msn web-site either and Outlook Express 2003 hangs during the receiving part.

I've tried Trend-Micro's Housecall and it cleaned several trojans, but I still have the same problems. I've never experienced this "Denial of Service" attacks. I'm hoping we can work and fix one; then later, I can address the other. PLease help me.

Apparent distrust of Adobe PDF Reader has increased the popularity of my preferred alternate PDF application, Sumatra PDF. It appears that the popularity has also attracted additional attention. From Security Focus:

Quote:
Sumatra PDF is prone to an unspecified denial-of-service vulnerability.

An attacker can exploit this issue to crash the affected application, resulting in a denial-of-service condition.

Sumatra PDF 1.1 is vulnerable; other versions may also be affected.

From the exploit information at Security Focus:

Quote:
Vulnerability Detection Time : 21st June 2010, 1:13 AM
Tested on version 1.1 of Sumara PDF Reader
Nature : Accidental Discovery
Description : Sumatra PDF Reader crashed while testing recovered PDF

A:DDoS: Denial of Service Attacks

I have seen people complaining in chat rooms about having their internet frozen out or crashed from DDoS attacks.  I was told they can get your ip address from skype?  Do you have any suggestions for protecting myself and others from such an attack?  Thank you so much.Surfing the Internet in general, and your IP can be identified - not just Skype. Click on this link http://www.ip-adress.com and it will show your Wide Area Network (WAN) IP. LAN stands for Local Area Network and WAN stands for Wide Area Network.
Your PC==(LAN)==[Home Router/ISP]==(Internet WWW)=={www.ip-adress.com}
LAN address is your home network. Eg. 192.x.x.x or 10.x.x.x
WAN address is your broadband ISP connection, and is called the router's WAN IP address.
To hide your WAN IP, you need an Anonymous proxy or VPN.
Your PC==(LAN)==[Home Router/ISP]==(Anonymous Proxy or VPN)==(Internet WWW)=={www.ip-adress.com}

BIND 9 denial of service being actively exploited.

Internet Systems Consortium, the developers of the BIND DNS server, is reporting a denial of service vulnerability that is being actively exploited. "Receipt of a specially-crafted dynamic update message to a zone for which the server is the master may cause BIND 9 servers to exit. Testing indicates that the attack packet has to be formulated against a zone for which that machine is a master. Launching the attack against slave zones does not trigger the assert. [...] This vulnerability affects all servers that are masters for one or more zones – it is not limited to those that are configured to allow dynamic updates. Access controls will not provide an effective workaround." ISC is urgently suggesting that everyone upgrade BIND to 9.4.3-P3, 9.5.1-P3, or 9.6.1-P1Click to expand...

Hiya

Oracle with Windows NT so I think this is the correct place. Its not a crossposting as it a different issue to the one I posted in Linux.

Internet Security Systems (ISS) X-Force has identified a vulnerability
with redirected Oracle connections. This vulnerability allows an
unauthenticated user to consume all the memory on an Oracle server. It
is also possible for remote users to deny access to all other users and
cause the operating system to crash.

I have tried several times to install XP SP3 on my DELL Inspiron 6000, XP SP2 and get and “Access Denied” error. I understand that this occurs if one or more registry keys are restricted so that the software cannot alter them. I have retired installing SP3 after disabling both Zone Alarm and AVG antivirus programs w/o success. (do they need to be uninstalled?) I also understand that there is a way to reset registry and file permissions, but I am afraid that this would be beyond my comfort level.

From the installation log, the first major logged failure is:
846.266: PruneCatalogsFromHotfixes:RegQueryValueEx Failed: 0x2 --- does this have any meaning.

So far, these attempts have not changed the computers functionality, however, I am not able to make the restore function work.

Can you help me to complete this installation? What are the consequences of not installing SP3?

My OS is Win8.1. I installed a software and instructed it to run as a window service. I uninstalled the SW. The service lingers. I ran the dos cmd box as administrator and typed in "sc delete XYZ". Where XYZ is the name of the service which I cut & paste from the property box. There is no spacing in XYZ.
The dos cmd returned this:
[SC] OpenService FAILED 5: Access is denied.

How do I resolve this issue in order to remove this windows service?
When I googled, I came across some random posts saying the above command "backfire" in Win7 (I assumed it may be the same for Win8). I don't want to go to the route of removing the service via registry.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Macromedia ColdFusion MX is an application suite for the development and deployment of Web applications for Microsoft Windows, Linux, and Unix-based operating systems. ColdFusion MX version 6.1 is vulnerable to a denial of service attack. A remote authenticated attacker could use an HTML form to repeatedly upload a file and then terminate the upload process prior to completion, which would result in a denial of service.

Hiya

Oracle Listener redirected connections denial of service

For Oracle on Windows NT, the Oracle listener process redirects connection requests to a new port and the Oracle Database server creates a new thread for this port. If a connection to the port is not made, the thread and consumed memory is lost until the Oracle Database server is restarted. By repeatedly requesting to be redirected and not connecting to the waiting port, an Oracle server can be forced into consuming all memory on the server. Once all memory has been consumed on the server, any attempt to log in to the console results in crashing the operating system.

Attackers have figured out a new way to get Amazon's cloud service to wage potent denial-of-service attacks on third-party websites—by exploiting security vulnerabilities in an open source search and analytics application known as Elasticsearch.
The power of Backdoor.Linux.Ganiw.a was documented earlier this month by researchers from antivirus provider Kaspersky Lab. Among other things, the trojan employs DNS amplification, a technique that vastly increases the volume of junk traffic being directed at a victim by abusing poorly secured domain name system servers. By sending DNS queries that are malformed to appear as if they came from the victim domain, DNS amplification can boost attack volume by 10-fold or more. The technique can be especially hard to block when distributed among thousands or hundreds of thousands of compromised computers.

I have a service running on WinNT 4 that serves the wireless connection for hand-held devices in retail stores. Recently, I changed the service to handle all communications for the client itself rather than spawining child processes to do the work. When a client connects on the socket, I use DuplicateHandle( ) to create a new handle to the same socket and pass it to a child thread that does the database work and returns the reply to the client. When CreateThread( ) succeeds, the parent (service) thread closes the handle that it has. Intermittenly (less that 5% of the time) the server send( ) returns errror 10038 (socket operation on non-socket). The handle to the socket is lost and the client which is blocking on the recv( ) appears to be hung.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

As Whitesnake once said 'here we go again on my own...'

Microsoft has released a patch that eliminates a security vulnerability in NetMeeting, an application that ships with Microsoft® Windows 2000 and is also available as a separate download for Windows NT 4.0. The vulnerability could allow a malicious user to temporarily prevent an affected machine from providing any NetMeeting services and possibly consume 100% CPU utilization during an attack

Also:

Microsoft has developed an improved version of the Cipher.exe tool, offering an important new option – the ability to permanently overwrite (or "wipe") all of the deleted data on a hard disk

I looked at my registry and both of my accounts look fine neither of them had a .bak on the end and so I'm not sure how to fix this if my only option is to delete my user account. I've already done a system restore to a couple days before this happened but, I'm still locked out of everything.

Is there anything else I can do that might help?

A:The system event notification service service failed logon ... token does not exist

Google led me to this post as I was researching the problem myself. I encountered the same issue. In this case on a vista32 ultimate box (although I do own an x64 box in case somebody thinks I'm blasphemous posting here ).

I haven't completely fixed the issue yet but I've gotten a bit further so in hopes of helping the next person here are the steps I've taken.

I was able to log in successfully in safe mode (hit F8 while starting up, select safe mode). Once there I went to command prompt (click the start button, type "cmd" [without the quotes] in the search bar and hit enter. From command prompt type services.msc to launch the services control panel. Find the System Event Notification Service, right click, select properties, change it from automatic startup to disabled, apply the change and "OK" out of the dialog box. You can now restart the computer and log in normally.

This isn't really a fix, it's a temporary work-around. SENS is needed for COM+ to respond to things like login and startup events. I've also noticed that my system is very slow right now. My next step is to find a way to generate a new token for SENS and then hopefully I'll be back at 100%. I currently have Dell researching that for me (this happens to be a Dell laptop). If I get a solution short of a reinstall to that one I'll post it too.

Hope this is helpful for someone. Good luck.

Hello all best wishes for us, this is my first post on this forum after searching fro to seek the help of some kind of malware attacks whether on my laptop.
Whether because of my careless causing virus attacks landed on my laptop.
After I turn on the laptop, the boot process was normal as usual. But as already in the process of logging on and has reached the desktop and there is no 10 second sudden pop up saying "Windows must now restart Because plug and play service terminated unexpectedly" also sometimes appears "Windows must now restart because power service terminated unexpectedly" so continuous thing happened this way.
But when I tried to enter in Safe Mode all of this run smoothly.
Can anyone help? I desperately need help for this problem.
Thank you.

Tap F8 when you turn the PC on or restart; when you get the Windows boot menu there should be some recovery options, I think near the bottom of the page. Try a System Restore to the most recent date prior to this problem.

Well...those two errors are somewhat different.

The user profile service error is common, IMO, while the server endpoint error seems related to networking.

Hi
I was experiencing bandwidths issues in my local NW, whenever my Windows 10 PC was ON. I discovered that the service (hosted by svchost.exe) BITS (Background Intelligent Transfer Service) was using 100% of my bandwidth, leaving none for other programs in the PC or even other devices in the NW.
I understand Windows Update runs with this service, right? Anyone else had issues? How to fix? I?m still on 10586 production SW. Not sure I want to update to Redstone yet.

A:Restart loop; Power service/Plug and Play service/DCOM terminated unexpectedly

Update: I never got a reply to this post and the computer has been sitting unused for about two months. Once in a while I turned it on and tried to quickly copy some files to a usb drive before it would restart. Since it restarted after only a minute or so, and it was carrying on other processes to start up, this was time consuming and annoying. I was planning on just getting some more files off of it, and then starting from scratch.

Well today it started up and has not restarted after a few hours. This is the first time it has done this after probably a hundred restarts. Perhaps it is a coincidence, but I used a different monitor with the pc this time. I still got the "Windows based script host has stopped working" message and these are the details:

Problem Signature
Problem Event Name: InPageCoFire
Error Status Code: c000009c
Faulting Media Type: 00000003
Damaged Filename: wbemprox.dll
OS Version: 6.1.7601.2.1.0.768.3
Locale ID: 1033
Additional Information 1: b688
Additional Information 2: b688e40ddee6555e26a47dbf0ad9b87b
Additional Information 3: ae63
Additional Information 4: ae63fd9c06abfa4442bb1441adaaeca9

Usually I got the restart message shortly after that, but not this time. I ran disk check and got this message:

"Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them."

It directed me to the CBS log for details, and I have a copy of the log, but I don't know if I should post it here.

Anyway, it still has not restarted and now I have an opportunity to try and do something about this. Even if I do end up having to wipe and start over, I would like to know whether this is virus or whatever. If you can suggest how I might proceed, bear in mind that any diagnostics I run should ideally not involve restarting, because it may very well go back to the endless restarting again.

Maybe somebody can help now?

I am attempting to the load the software for a Canon Mx850 printer to my Lenovo PC with Windows Vista.

I get the message Print Spooler Service has been stopped. I have checked in the services area and it is set to automatic. When I attempt to start it. I get the following Error: 1068 dependency service or group failed to start.

I have gone to the command prompt and typed the following: sc config spooler depend= RPCSS however I get message access denied. I am set as the system administrator. Not sure what to do at this point. Very frustrating. Printer works fine when connected to laptop. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

A:Print Spooler Service stopped Error 1068 dependency service or group failed to start

Double click on the Print Spooler service to open its Properties. On the Dependencies tab see upon what it depends, and trace back to see if the cause/fix can be determined. Caveat: no guarantee this will work any better than your command attempt.

Every time I Restart the Laptop, it opens to the Desktop, but there is a period of sometimes upwards of a minute, where once everything is loaded, the Desktop freezes.

Today in Windows Task Manager - Services Tab, I see that WdiServicesHost is not running. When I right click on the line, this is what appears;

....but then when I click on Start Service, I get this nasty little message;

So where to now to beat this problem?

A:Wdi Service Host not running - in trying Start Service : Access is Denied

Hello,

Looking at my computer, for me it is stopped, and when I try to start it, I get the same error message. My computer is working fine, so I think this is not your original problem. However, some websites suggest that it should be started. I am slightly sceptical as to the accuracy of this information, but here is the link to this file on my favourite website for looking these things up: Diagnostic Service Host - Process and Service wiki

I logged on to my computer as an administrator and my desktop didnt display for about 4 minutes. There was only a black screen with the white mouse arrow on it. When the desktop had loaded a Windows notification
bubble popped up saying:

"Windows could not connect to the System Event Notification
Service service. This problem prevents limited users from logging on to the
system. As an administrative user, you can review the System Event Log for details about why the service didn't respond."

I don't believe that I have installed any software etc. recently that could have caused this problem to occur. It just randomly happened one day. In sync with this error I am unable to connect to the internet using my 3 mobile modem and my laptop isn't recognising any wireless signals bringing up the message:

"The dependency service or group failed to start"

My laptop is a Philips freevents 12NB5800 which uses vista.

every single session since the latest update I inevitably spend half an hour sitting with high cpu usage going to the 'service host unistack service group' and its to the point where I'm curious...what is this? what does it do? is its sole purpose in life to have me glare at it for 30 minutes every morning? I've read and tried some of the troubleshooting steps here on other threads, looked at ms' community forums, seems like an issue within the os to me. so...what do I do?

I have a Sony Vaio SVS 151 with 12gb of ram running Windows 8.1. The disk usage runs at 100% almost all the time, and as long as the disk usage is high the laptop is almost unusable it runs so slow. Most of the time it is Service Host: Local Service. I have read other threads and none of the suggestions have corrected this problem.

Recently this has been happening: http://i.imgur.com/1Mc7v1B.png
So I ran a search and found this: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/494636/service-host-local-system-cpumemory-hog/
Is this still the best way to go about fixing it? If so, would anyone mind looking at the results for me?
I'm on Windows 8.
I have an intel i72700k and 16 gigs of RAM.
Bonus problem: My CPU is going up to the high 50% range usage and I'm not running anything big or much of anything period, going into task manager reveals that a large majority of the CPU is being used by nothing.

Hi, Try the following. First of all, use another PC to create a bootable Windows 10 DVD or USB Flash Drive via the following link.  Under the section 'Need to create a USB, DVD or ISO', download the Media Creation Tool. http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 Once you have this, run the tool, select 'Create installation media for another PC', then select the language, edition of Windows 10, and 64bit. Follow the rest of the prompts to create this and then click Finish when completed. Insert the Windows 10 Installation Media and Shutdown the notebook by holding down the power button for 10 seconds. Tap away at the esc key as soon as you press the power button to enter the Start-up Menu and then select the Boot Options Menu ( f9 ). Use the arrow keys to highlight the CDROM (uefi) or USB Flash Driver ( uefi ) option, depending on which type of media you created, then hit enter - if prompted to 'Press any key to continue....' - do so. Boot to the Advanced Start-up Options Menu - see Option 5 on the link below for details on accessing this. http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/2294-advanced-startup-options-boot-windows-10-a.html#option5 Then try running Windows System Restore to return the notebook to a point in time before this issue occurred - See Option 1 on the link below for details on this procedure. http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/4588-system-restore-windows-10-a.html Regards, DP-K

Would love some intelligence into this error message Although this isn't a system performance hit, I wonder if there's a security or meaningful application risk associated with this error and, either way, am curious if there is a 'fix' to this. So I have the problem described in the title. The service host or antimalware service executable process will, at random times, start using alot of CPU power and cause my laptop to be performing a lot of work. I'm not sure whether this is normal or an indication of infection; I've ran malwarebytes and I did get a few detected items, but I want to do a more thorough scan just in case the malwarebytes scan didn't work, or if there is malware in my system I'm not even aware of. I am running Windows 8.1. If any more information is needed please let me know. I appreciate the help, thanks.

Hi,

I Purchased this Laptop few years back. Now it stopped working suddenly. Am in India right now but when i consulted the Dell Exclusive store here they say its not repairable. Kindly suggest. I never fell down nor got damaged by any external source. I wanted to get it repaired or may be send it back to recycling if possible.

A:Service Tag <ADMIN NOTE: Service tag removed per privacy policy> || DELL Inspiron 14z 5423 || Laptop Dead

We cannot assist without knowing  why the shop said it's not repairable.
How old is "a few years"?  Any system more than three years old likely isn't worth a major repair such as a replacement system board -- even if a board is available.

This is a low-end system -- if it requires a mainboard change, it's likely not worth the repair, as the shop has told you.

So I've been having this problem for days now, two tasks named Service Host: Local Service(Network Restricted) and Service Host: Local Service(No Network) keep using up ALL of my cpu, theyre usually accompanied by any app I have open, so my task manager is basically like this for example:

Service Host: Local Service(Network Restricted) 40% cpu usage
Skype 29% cpu usage
Service Host: Local Service(No Network) 26% cpu usage

If I close skype, the usage goes down to 2 percent for a brief second and then any other app I have open launches up instead of skype and uses up all of my cpu.

I've tried several virus scans and I've done my best to clean up the system but I still have this problem, any solutions?

A:Service Host: Local Service very high cpu usage

You could start pinning down the problem by using Task Manger and look in the processes tab and scroll down to the Svchost using the CPU time. If you expand it, you can see what is running in that host. But I do not believe it will give you individual usage on each service.

If you open Resource Monitor (resmon in a run box) You can go to the CPU tab, check the CPU usage and find the svchost you want and put a check mark. It will then list the services running in that process in the Services window and how much the Average CPU time is being used. Get us a picture, or let us know what is causing the high usage.

Keep track of the PID (Process ID) number so you can confirm which svchost you are checking. Those numbers may be specific to just your system. There may be other pertinent info about the situation in some other windows also.

I get an error stating windows defender service does not exist as an installed service 0x80070000424 I don't have microsoft essential. It was working fine until today. When I open the program and click on tools and others it will not click at all. Also, real protected is off. Also, its not under the services.

A:windows defender service does not exist as an installed service

Hi,
In win-7 windows defender is Not a antivirus program,
So what do you have installed as one

Install MSE if you haven't already or any third party antivirus if you wish they would usually disable defender anyway.
Cheers.

I usually know my way around a computer, but this has me stumped.

My Windows 7 PC has an admin and a standard user, one for me and one for the kid. Somehow my account, when attempting to log into it, feeds me "The User Profile Service service failed the logon, User Profile cannot be loaded".

The issue is that the only other account is a standard user, and in order to have access even in the command prompt, you must run as admin, and when I do, I am prompted by UAC for the admins credentials. I enter them correctly, and then nothing, even when in Safe Mode.

What do?

Thank you in advance.

I am having a major problem trying to reinstate my user/admin rights on my 8yo son's computer. The computer has created a bogus "user" profile and backed up the original as a "bak" file. I have tried renaming both of these to recover the setup, (as recommended via an archived thread), but the computer will not let me save the changes ... I have also tried many online software programmes to help clean and restore but the problem still exists. As I am struggling to gain full admin access I can't modify some important security settings, please help!!

A:'User Profile Service service failed the logon

You may want to give this a try. If you still have problems post

The User Profile Service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded.
I would also make a full updated virus scan and download and make a full scan with malwarebytes, update it first.

and then it continues on to say 'User profile cannot be loaded' So when i logged onto my computer today as normal the screen was black and im sure it had a little window open which said 'Loading personalised settings' and then after that im sure i seen a window which said 'Windows service pack now available' and then when my desktop came on the wallpaper had been changed to default literally all my icons had disappeared there was nothing in my pictures or downloads folder which is were i keep my downloaded movies and series and Google chrome wasnt there and instead internet explorer was kinda like my computer had been reset to factory default But some of my games was still on the desktop and skype was there and when i double clicked skype it started installing it So i have restarted my computer a few times shut it down and started it up again and same thing and i looked at the most recent windows updates and the latest one user profile the service service failed 'The logon....' had been installed on the th of October so that surely cant't be the problem I should also mention that i checked the hard drive and it had the same memory like everything was still 'The user profile service service failed the logon....' on it gb left of gb the same with my other hard drive the memory was still the same And now it isnt logging me into my profile at all its saying what i mentioned at the very top ''The user profile service service failed the logon User profile cannot be loaded' What is the problem here and how can it be fixed If it can thank you for any help or advice

I experienced this problem and just solved this a few hours ago. Do you have an alternate account? If you do, follow the steps written in User Profile Service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded.

You must make sure that the alternate account is also an administrator. Else, boot to safe mode, which allows you to login to the administrator account, and follow the same steps written in User Profile Service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded.

Hello, I've had a similar problem to the one mentioned in this thread- http://forums.techguy.org/windows-nt-2000-xp/199125-solved-specified-service-does-not.html

I managed to find the proper key, however, there was no LowerFilters there.

The list of items there is:
(Default)
Class
Icon
Installer32
NoInstallClass
SilentInstall
TroubleShooter-0
UpperFilters

I am using Windows XP SP3, if that helps.

Thanks in advance, Raz.

Hi
I recently purchased a Dell Inspron 7559 laptop. It arrived on the 31st August. The issue I have is that the service tag is not recognised on the Dell site. I get the following message when I enter the service tag: -
There’s no match for that Service Tag or Express Service code. Retype the code or select your product below. Allow 48 hours for new devices to register on our site.
It's been well over 48 hours since the machine was registered.
Please help.
Many thanks.

A:There’s no match for that Service Tag or Express Service code

If the system was purchased from Dell, it can take a week or two for a new service tag to show up in the database.
If the system was purchased elsewhere (at retail or from a third party, Amazon, EBay etc.), contact the seller for information.
