I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I had a Dell Laptop with Win7 64-bit. But there was a problem and it wouldn't boot anymore. The problem is that there are some very important files in that laptop. So, I got that hard drive out and connected it to my Toshiba (Win7, 32-bit) as an external drive.

I was not able to access the 'user' files from the dell. When I tried to open it, I got an error message 'access denied'. So, I went to properties --> Security --> Advanced, and changed the permissions to everyone. Now, when I open the folder 'Documents and Settings', it opens the folder on my Toshiba, and not the actual files that are on that hard drive.
I NEED to get those files out of there. Please help.

I have joined a computer (PC1) to a domain control server (2008), and user able to login using their domain user account - although recently I have found out that even though the computer (PC1) do not connect to a server, user still able to access using their domain account.
Is there a way for me to restrict domain account user from accessing the computer (PC1) if they are disconnected from server?
Hope my explanation make sense to you guyz.

Thank in advance

A:Prevening domain user from accessing Computer

Lots to be considered. Joining a domain is intended to give the company admin configuration control of all the company users.
This is normal, expected and even proper for the company to do this.

restrict domain account userClick to expand...

hmm; only the company admin should be able to do this and almost always it is done using some scripts, NOT by loggin into your PC. So - - who is accessing your PC remotely, the admin - - how do you know this occurs?

PCs joined to a domain usually get a replacement for PC Login - - the network form and that creates a link to the domain controller.

I use "Teamveiwer" to access my daughters computer. I can and do this, sometimes, unattended. On occasion I see one of the children, in their teens, viewing inappropriate content. But I don't know which child. They each have their own account that are PW protected. I would like to place, on their screen, something that can't be removed that identifies which user account is being used. This item should ALWAYS be on top of anything else on the screen and cannot be removed except by the administrator, their mother.

Don't know if this is helpful, but if you can access the computer remotely, the command "WHOAMI" will tell you who is currently logged in.

Open the Group Policy Editor (GPEDIT.MSC); might be something in there which allows you to block internet access for certain programs.

Hi there,

I installed a second HDD on my laptop that can have up to 4 different HDD. I have a XP running on the first HDD. I just installed Windows 7 Premium 32bit on the second HDD. When the installation was done, Windows 7 can see and access the folders/files/drives from the first HDD. How do I restrict this? I knew how to do this with XP but I can't figure out how to do this with Windows 7. Basically, I don't want the Windows 7/Second HDD interacting with the first. Any help regarding this would be very helpful!

Thank you

A:Prevent Windows 7 from accessing/seeing other drives?

Have you tried removing the XP drive letter in Win7 Disk management?

Are you booting via the BIOS Boot order or one time BIOS Boot Menu key? This is cleaner than having Windows configure a Dual Boot which interlocks the HDs and requires surgery to remove one.

A:Installing rights to standard user or prevent an admin user something

a) This may be possible in theory but it would not be easy. Don't go there.
b) All administrators are equal. Any restrictions you impose can be undone by another.
The only practical way to do what you want is to encrypt the users folders. Windows doesn't care about user folders so that is not an issue.

Hi guys/gals,

I have a computer in the other room for my brothers and kids to use, it has full access to the internet. It uses Windows XP, and I've made two users for it, one for the elder brother, which is over 18 and I don't care what he sees and gets from the Internet, and another user, which I only install Firefox. The users for this account are two girls, age 10 and 12.

Believe it or not, they search using Google and they've learn it by them selves . The problem is now, since they are using search engines, they play games, search keyword 'games' and stuff, I know that someday they will reach pornographic or 18 rated sites.

Please help me to handle this situation. What should I install to prevent them from accessing these sites before its too late.

Hi, I am the administrator of my PC (not that that seems to mean much in Windows 7!). I wonder if anyone can help me please with either of the following issues:

(1) My main query is whether I can prevent people who log on to the Guest account from seeing a folder along with its subfolders and files?

(2) A side issue is that I am denied permission to preview pictures, i.e. if I right-click a picture and click Preview it says I don't have permission to view it. Can I somehow gain this permission to generally view all my pictures?

Thanks for your help!

By default anyone using the guest account would be unable to access the desktop or files of any other account. This is by design. The rights of the guest account are the lowest of the low.

Been trying to migrate a user profile from one computer to another (both W7 Ultimate).
Outlook settings don't get copied and the most annoying thing is it copies the admin user by default also which ends up creating a second admin user on the destination computer.

I can live without Outlook settings, so is there a way to just migrate the user account or another tool that does? Looked at USMt but it says I need the Windows DVD etc.

I feel like such a ditz! Don't even know how to ask this question... vocabulary-wise.

When I'm involved in long downloads, how do I prevent XP from putting me "to sleep", "running me in the background" and bringing up the list of Users defined for my machine.

Depending on which connection I choose to use, and I have a lot of them, when XP puts me in the background the connection will be lost.

Is there a way to adjust the logged-on-user timeout? If not, is there a way to temporarily force XP not to put me in the background?

I appreciate all the help you guys have given me!!!
I apologize for not using the correct vocabulary in describing this... if I knew what terms to use I might have been able to find the answer in Windows Help.

A:How to Prevent Logged-on-User Sleep?

I think you have two separate things here. The "sleep" you describe and the bringing up of the list of users is controlled by your scrensaver and power settings. Right click anywhere on your desktop, choose Properties, go to the Screensaver tab, and uncheck the box that says on resume, display welcome screen, and better still, use "none" as a screensaver.
For stopping the connection being dropped, go to Control Panel, Internet Options, Connections tab, Settings, Advanced, and uncheck the two "Disconnect" boxes. That is the proceedure for Dial-up Connections, which I presume you are on.
Hope this helps.

Hi, i just wonder is that anyway we can prevent someone to enter safe mode or how do we make it just like only administrators have the rights to enter safe mode ? I used a software to block some website so the student unable to go to certain website, but if they log in to "safe mode with networking support" they able to go any site they wish to.... is that a way to prevent this ? Thanks.

A:How to prevent user from enter safemode ?

Follow the following steps to disable the Safe Mode :

?If you have installed the operating system in Windows in C drive, just type this command in run menu attrib -r -s -h -a c:\ntldr. If you have installed the Operating system in D drive, change the command to d:\ntldr.
?Then backup the NTLDR file in C drive with another name. You can do that by copying and pasting to the same location to get a new file ?Copy of NTLDR?.
?Download this free portable HexEditor.(
?Extract the HexEdit.exe and run it.
?Then go to file > Open and choose C:\ drive on the right hand side and look for ntldr file on the left box. Select the ntldr file and click OK.
?Scroll down and look for the line 00000770 and change the values 0f 85 09 to 90 90 90.
?Click file and save.
?Then close the HexEdit.
?Then type this command attrib +r +s +h +a c:\ntldr in Run menu.
?All it is done.

Before you are doing this, you have to remember that you can?t access the keyboard; therefore, you can?t select an operating system from multiple Operating systems. If you want to enter the safe mode, use windows installation disc for recovery console and rename the ?Copy of ntldr? file to ntldr. This way you can use the F8 key again.

I have a user who keeps changing the time on her Win7 workstation. The PC eventually resets the correct time automatically, but I would like to find a way to prevent her changing time manually. I've looked at various ways to prevent users from changing time (local security policy, GPO), but they all prevent not only the manual time-change but also the automatic reset of the time. What I seek is a way to prevent the manual time-change that still allows the automatic. I'm open to a third-party solution as well.

A:Logged in as temp user each time I log back in. How do I prevent this?

Hello Scarecrow,

The tutorial below may be able to help with this.

User Profile Error - Logged on with a Temporary Profile - Vista Forums

If you still continue to get this error often, then you might consider creating a new administrator account to use instead, and delete the old one after copying what you want from it.

If you still get this error after that, then it may be time to reinstall Windows 7. Be sure to backup anything that you do not want to lose first of course.

Hope this helps,

On the screen where you choose which user account to log in to, I've noticed the user avatars/icons are sorted in "last used" order. This is extremely annoying because it forces you to actively look at the icons instead of just alway clicking on the same place on the screen. (Compare it to if the digits buttons on your cellphone switched places e.g putting the 0 first. Confusing.)

How can I prevent this, ie to have the avatars in a fixed position always?

Thank you!

A:Prevent Log in screen user avatars from switching places

Hello boardsmm, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Option One in the tutorial below would be a good option to have "All Users" always show at sign in instead of the "Last User".

About once every 6 months, I have to fix my mother-in-law's computer. It is always the User Profile Service failed the logon problem. The solutions in this forum have been helpful in solving them.

What I would like to know is how to prevent getting this error in the first place.

A:How to prevent User Profile Service failed the logon

Sounds like the account is corrupted
Get ideas from this turorial
The User Profile Service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded.
In addition, to fix corruption run this command
System Files - SFC Command
If errors are found run 3 times

If errors are fixed and the problem still occurs, I suggest that you set up a new account , then delete the old.

hi :

i would like to find out more from you guys.
what is the data prolicy in your company that restrict user to copy data out to the external media ? assume user can only use/review the data within the company pc only. what are the best practice/ways to prevent user copy data out to their own thumb drive, floppy disk, or cd media etc...

solution that i can think of ...
1. disable the floppy drive.
2. disable the usb port .
3. install only read cd-rom drive.
4. setup file auditing in the file server.

it will be even more troublsome if the pc can access the internet coz they can upload to offsite storage or use webmail to send data to themselves

solution that i can think of ...
1. block all the website and storage site.

what else can i do to restrict it?

A:Administrative user only for install software but prevent intercative session

you can deny logon with security policy. this can be done locally or via GPO. Note you cannot deny log on locally as this also will prevent logon through AUC. If rdp is used to access the syetem, you cna deny log on through remote Desktop Services.
the settings can be found in computer configuration\security settings\local policies\User Right Assignment
If this is about local logons, a common solution is to configure a logonscript that does a logoff. This also can be done by gpo. As a security solution this is not completely waterproof, but keep in mind administrators will always be able to circumvent security

Is it possible, in any way, to prevent the right-click menu, from a single user?

I'm creating a local group policy to lock down a Win7 Pro Workstation for use in the Staff room.
It's the first time I've used it, previously I've worked a bit with AD. but I've been following on line tutorials and using google and I'm nearly there with it.
But I'm stuck on one thing. My approach has been to remove access to pretty much everything apart from IE, Firefox and Skype icons on the task bar.
I've got the start menu empty apart from the shutdown button, which is what I want but at the top of the start menu is the users icon/picture thing and if i click on it it takes me to "user accounts". I can't for the life of me work out how to get rid of the picture or just stop this happening.

I set up my Windows 8.1 tablet offline at my dad's and used a nude photo of my girlfriend as the user account picture. All done offline. About a week later, the tablet forced me to link it with my Microsoft account in order to continue to log into windows. Now I am finding that same nude picture is showing up when I am on the Microsoft website. That would not make my girlfriend happy if she found that out and I don't think the public needs her urinating. How can I prevent it from automatically posting it online. When I go to my account using a web browser, I can change it back to the Sylveon I originally had, and my user account on the tablet will still be my girlfriend, but eventually the nude photo returns to the Microsoft website. How do I stop this?

Normally I try to find out myself, but for this problem I think I'll try asking.

We are often recommended to not run in Administrator mode/account. For this reason I created a second account on my Windows XP and have found that Internet Explorer can't get out through the wireless modem.

In the Admin account IE seems to have no problem.

Hello Inepoe888 and Welcome to BC,

The only way I know of to be able to do what you are asking is by setting group policies. This is somewhat advanced, and usually done by IT tech's / admins, however if you Google "group policies Windows 7" you can find out a great deal about what it is, and if this is something you feel comfortable doing.

Couple of things worth noting:

1) Only works on Windows 7 Ultimate, Professional, or Enterprise to my knowledge. Will not work on Home Premium versions.

2) Must be admin.

Good Luck!

To take ownership of that folder again:

2. Right click on the folder
3. Select Properties
4. Click on the Security tab
5. Click on the Advanced button
6. Click on the Owner tab

Unhide not working change my passwords and lock me out anymore my vps admin put me back directly onto my old vps desktop I thought all would be well and I could try and run unhide exe and get my stuff back or find a system restore point and do it that way My problem is that he seems unable to get me directly logged in as the original user profile admin where all my desktop stuff is and from what I was told where I need to directly run unhide exe for it to have any chance for effect I was setup with multiple user names to get access including a new Administrator but my vps admin is unable to help me further to connect to the original admin I hope that makes sense as I find it very confusing myself yet I ve done the best I could to post what I m dealing with in hopes of getting my files back I have run unhide exe and checked out the main thread on it to no avail I do not remember seeing anything called fakehdd but I dont know what other names it could be under besides I dont understand why it would change my pass and lock me out I cant buy their bogus tool if I cant login and see that my stuff is gone Any ideas or if you need further clarification just let me know Thanks

I want to set-up a facility that can check if a user is running scripts to access my website, as I have seen elsewhere. Parts of my site need to have the user running scripts so that it is fully accessible.
Is there a way that if I turn off scripts in IE, then the site detects it and bars my way by forwarding away from the objective page? Could anybody suggest a solution?
Many Thanks

Hi,For a reason or reasons unknown to me, my Limited User account (on Windows Xp Media Centre SP2) seems able to access System files, Administrator files and Administrative tools. It can even access the Registry Editor! I am not sure if it supposed to go this far... But it cannot create a user account or change account type. I have recently been wandering through Local Security Policy and Services in Administrative tools, but I don't recall making any changes. Even if I did, I make sure I know what I'm doing first and normally after confirming from more than one source. I have checked again that it is in fact set to 'Limited User'! Please help. I have been trying to figure out the problem for like 2 weeks now. Thanks in advance.

Requiring user name\password when accessing a machine over the network\router,

I have multiple machines connected by switch\router. What I want is to let the system ask any user for the ?network password? when wanting to access any machine via the network (attached). This message (Enter network passwords) sometimes is available and others is not. how to make it appear all the time?

At which level this property is set?

1. At the level of sharing\security of a folder?
2. At level of network sharing?

How to manage this issue? To share a partition\folder but to allow accessing it with user name and password?

Thank you

A:Requiring user name\password when accessing a machine over the network

The problem is that Windows remembers these user names and passwords unless you tell Windows not to remember them.

I haven't tested out this Security Policy yet but it does tell Windows not to not allow storage of passwords and credentials so it may have the desired effect you seem to be looking for.

Just go to Control Panel, > Administrative tools,> Local Policies,> Security Options,>Network Access, Do not allow Storage of Passwords and Credentials per the picture below. Enabled should restrict Storage of Credentials.

A:User accounts lock out while accessing network resource

u didn't mention which OS u r using...anywayz try removing everything from your network configuration i.e. network card, TCP/IP, client for Microsoft network etc... remove everything, restart your PC n it will autodetect your network card, reconfigure your IP etc...reset once more n c whether that works. good luck

I had several files that I NTFS encrypted on my Windows XP pro laptop. I recently changed my log in password and now cannot access my files. I receive an access denied error message. I really need to get into these files. I have tried taking ownership of file and changing password back. Neither worked. I can locate the key within regedit but I do not know what I can do with it. If anyone has any suggestions I would be forever thankful.

A:Accessing NTFS encrypted files after changing user password

How did you change the password back? Did you do it from within the account in question or as the Administrator? If as the Administrator, try changing it back again while already logged into the account. If that doesn't work, and you don't have either a Password Recovery Disk or a user set up with Data Recovery rights, (the disk or the user rights must have been created while you still had access to the files) then I'm afraid your files are not recoverable.

Hi everybody, recently my desktop running on Win xp started to boot very very slowly (unimaginable ... it's not posssible to work !!!! horrible!!!) so I tried to boot into SafeMode. But in safemode after loading some files it displays Safemode in four corners and stops. I've a password protected account and "My Documents" folder is not accesssible to other users. When I try to get the files from "My documents" folder by connecting the SATA HDD to another PC, the folder shows empty and when I try to copy it, it doesn't allow. Pls tell me how to get back the files and folders. After backigup the files I'll format the drive and clean install Win xp. Thanx in advance...

A:Accessing folders/files of Password protected User account in Win XP

Try this on your other pc with the laptops hard drive connected:

Use an Administrators account:

open my computer and from top menu select tools >Folder options > View :

Then scroll to the bottom of the list in window and UNTICK "Use simple file sharing (recommended)"

click apply at the bottom and apply to all folders at the top and click ok:

In my computer note the drive letter of your problem hdd then run: "chkdsk D: /r"
where "D" is the drive letter of your problem hdd.

Let the process finish (might take a long time).

When diskcheck has finished open the drives and go to the folders that you want to access (dont try to open them yet)!

Right click on the folder and select properties then select security tab at the top,
Click the owner tab at the top
then in the change owner to section click to highlight the "Administrators (........)administrators"
(.....just means some chars)
tick "replace owner on subcontainers and objects" and apply. then ok to exit that window.
In the properties window that is still open, Highlight the "Administrators" and Tick the "Full Control" tickbox under "allow" Apply and OK to close the window.

You should now now have full control any data in that folder. Repeat step (2) for all the folders you want to get information from. You can also perform step (2) on individual files if you still cant access them.

If this does not work I'm sure someone else will suggest recovery method for you
let us know your progress please.

I have a series of 7 forms which allow users to select various options and complete some computation in the DB. The whole process takes no more than 3 mins.

However, some users will go to Form 3, then exit Access. And they will forget which Form to continue from.

To prevent such a problem, I thought of writing some code to prevent the user from exiting Access till they have completed all 7 forms.

I would appreciate if anyone can advise if this can be done and how to do it.

Is there any way to disable the computer from booting itself up?

I've been having an issue where the computer will reboot itself about a minute or so after I attempt to shut down, it doesn't happen every night but rather a couple of times a week. Perhaps there is a way to deny it from booting on a schedule like 10 PM to 7 AM or deny any Scheduled tasks from starting itself to perform them (I've checked and changed any scheduled tasks to just perform at start up)

Sounds like you've got it pretty well under control and have good habits.

I would not expect registry crap to affect speed unless you have VERY extraordinary circumstances.

No, don't defrag SSDs.

Keep an eye on your non-Microsoft services as seen in the services tab of msconfig.exe. They have a way of growing. Also keep the startup programs checked on the startup tab of msconfig.exe to a minimum.

I haven't done a clean install since I built this PC in early 2011. It's as fast as ever. The only issue I note is that reboot time has crept up by 10 seconds or so, despite my efforts to keep things ship-shape. A clean install might solve that, but that's a huge step to take for little and possibly no benefit.

With any luck, you won't have to do a clean install until forced to by your next upgrade. I do clean installs any time I change motherboards (almost never), but there are programs such as Paragon Adaptive Restore that will at least attempt to get around the problem of new motherboards and chipsets.

I assume you use some sort of imaging program and keep at least a couple of images--maybe one done shortly after you got things properly configured and others from later periods as time goes on.

Avoid the temptation to use a bunch of magic utilities or suites that claim they will refresh your PC or ensure its health. I'm not sure what you are now using, but I'd get antsy if you went beyond CCleaner, maybe Revo, and whatever is built into Windows. I used Revo for a while, but have heard of issues and am frankly unsure it does anything that measurably improves performance--though it would clearly make you feel better for "being clean" and save some miniscule amount of space. Mebbe you're better off just taking a shower to feel clean and instead rely on the Windows uninstaller.

Win 10 is too much of an unknown at this time to judge. I'm undecided myself what I will put on a new PC I plan to build before year end. Win 7 will be supported until 2020.

The major issues surrounding Win 10 to me are the nature of the licensing, the details of the "free upgrade" offer, and how it will be updated and upgrade over time. If the only issues were its functionality and the interface, I'm sure I could live with it---but the unclarified details may be a show-stopper. No way to judge that until Microsoft starts talking.
