What virus software do I use on a win2K server ? I tried Norton professional but it didn't work.
Are there special versions? If so what are they?
I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.
I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Looking for some help on this. I have 30 workstations all running Windows 2000 Pro. What I would like to do is to use the Active Directory to assign the computers in the domain the Office 2000 SP2. The problem is you have to have an .MSI to use when you are assigning. The only Office service pack I can find is the one for stand alone workstations. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance,
I have a stupid question on WIN2K virus problem. I am running a Win2K Adv.Server but get infected with virus. It stop me to bring up IE or any browser . So, I cannot launch online scan/cleaning which I subsribed earlier.
Is there any cheaper (free) way to fix this problem ? eg. free download virus killer.....etc.
Thank you in advance.
I use InoculateIT for my 98/ME and 2000 Professional computers. But, they don't have a version that runs on Win2K Server. Is there any other software that will run on this PC that is free?
If not - any other programs that run on this OS that is recommended?
No one knows?!?!?!?!?!?!?
I have one PC setup with Win2K Professional. It is used as a game server, sharing the cable modem, file server, and web server. I am replacing it with another PC that has Win2K Server. I have saved all the security updates from the old pc (in the Q######_whatever.exe format). Should I apply these updates to the new PC? I have about 30 of these updates. I've went to the Windows update site and got all the critical updates, but I know there are other bugs out there and I'd like to have this PC as secure as possible.
Thanks in advance!
Guys I am bewildered. Somewhere during installing codecs and getting the FRUCTA virus I believe, my Win2k Pro install has morphed into Win2k SERVER. Complete with Server Family bootup splash screen, shutdown screen, "Server" start menu banner, etc. Some software won't even install due to it reporting itself as Server instead of Pro. I've went through all the updates on this fresh install and I have no idea what has happened.Any thoughts on what caused this and how to get back to Pro without a reinstall? I can reinstall but I'm afraid it'll happen again if I don't know what caused it in the first place.I know this OS is old and I need a new pc, etc but at this time I cannot upgrade either. Thanks.
Sounds more like you were hacked instead of a virus.Personally I would wipe the drive and reinstall pro from scratch or there maybe a backdoor for the hacker.Make sure you install a software firewall and antivirus/antispyware BEFORE you connect to the internet if you are not behind a router.http://www.computing.net/answers/windows-2000/win2k-pro-has-morphed-into-win2k-server/65793.html
I just installed Windows 2000 Advance Server recently to a Compaq Proliant ML530 server and found out that the license for this server is more expensive than Windows Server 2003 Standard. The SmartStart CD of the compaq does not support windows server 2003 and I don't want to manually re-configure everything and start all over again. Does Win2K A.S. support Windows Server 2003 upgrade?
Right now I have a Win2k Server and all the user will authenticate to that server. But my company bought a brand new PC which has been installed with Samba Server. My bos wants the new server become the domain controller and unplug the old server (Win2k).
Is there anyone who is able to help me to implement this change?
Thank you so much before,,,,,

The Samba Sever is for file sharing. You did not state the OS on the new PC, but if it's truley a
Samba Sever, it's likely to be some distro of Linux.
You can google for Linix domain controller and find a flock of articles like this
doing some research on PDC Migration may save you a lot of time and effort.
I'm fairly computer literate with most things but when it comes to ports, and routers, and firewalls i'm pretty much a noob.
My friends and I have been using Ventrilo for a few weeks with me running the server from my computer. A few days ago i had to put norton antivirus on my computer to get ride of a virus. Ever since then i can't connect to my Ventrilo server and neither can anyone else. I uninstalled it and everything but it must have changed one of my windows network settings. The windows firewall isn't up but something is blocking stuff. Anyone have any idea how to make stuff like that work again? Thanks.
In our small network, there are a couple of servers running WIN2K advanced server.
One of these has developed a problem where, if on another machine, we go thru MY NETWORK PLACES - entire network - ETC to the list of computers and try to connect to that server, we get the error " \\SERVER is not accessible. The server is not configured for transactions" If any other machine had a mapped network drive to the server, the connection still works.
This has started only in the last few days and seems to affect only this one server.
Network is 10-WIN2K machines and 2-WIN2K advanced servers in a workgroup - no domain running thru 2 switches.
Anyone have a clue to the solution?
I lost my CD key....please someone help...urgent !!!!!!!!!!!!
thanks in advance
i don't think anyone can help you with this except Microsoft (legally anyway...)
Hi all Ok quick question basically I m learning win kserver at the mo and a bit confused about a few issues Namely if the server is NOT running terminal services am I correct in assuming that each application available to a user must be installed on EACH workstation on the network So say for instance theres machines all will need to have Office installed all will have to have Dreamweaver installed etc Then depending upon the permissions and policies I set to users and groups dictates who has access to those applications Further more All user files will be saved to the server Where do I add the file path HELP! win2k server back to the server s my docs And finally if the server is running Active Directory and the workstations run XP how do I get the client work stations win2k server HELP! to talk to active directory so that any user can log on and utilise the given permissions I have win2k server HELP! set for him or her Thanks ALL nbsp

Are there any free ftp servers for a win2k pro? If not, are there any share applications, which do not impose a limit on the number of processed files during the non-registration period?
I have just installed a Win 2000 server as a PDC and have made a mistake in the server name.
Does anyone know of any utiliies/fixes that will allow me to rename the server without a complete rebuild.
Thanks in advance
Presently have xp on my system and would like to have win 2k server on the machine as well. Does one of the operating systems have to be installed before the other? for instance, I know there is an issue installing win98 and win2k on the same machine and that 98 has to be installed first, or so I've heard. Also is there any particular way I should format the hard drive to accomodate the two operating systems.
Thanks in advance

I had to reinstall win2k server on my server, and afterwards I am unable to view my shared directories from my pc. From both systems I can see the other system in my workgroup, and with the server I can access the shared folders on my normal pc. However, everytime I try and view the shared folders on my server from my pc, a login prompt appears, and when I type in the servers admin password, the prompt keeps appearing, not letting me set it to automatically view the servers files. Is there a setting I need to fix on the server because of the fresh install? thanks in advance for any help with this
does anyone know how to fix this issue? thanks
I installed win 2k server and saved the directory that related to the previous O/s win98 se. What I wanted to know is how I would re install win98se and setup a dual boot between win98 and win2k how would I do that?
I was told it may be possible to re install win98 and it would ask for old or new windows this true?
Welcome to TechSpot
The only way to get them to work as you want, is to uninstall W2K Server, then reinstall W98 in partition C, nowhere else.
W2K can be installed later, but it must have its own partition, e.g. D.
Upon installation, W2K will automatically create the boot-menu from which you can choose your OS at startup
Installation sequence is: W95/W98/(NT)/W2K/ME/XP were W95 or W98 MUST be in partition C.
Not too sure if I should be posting a server issue but any advice is good so here is my issue. I have a 2K server and it seems to start up slow. Takes about 5 minutes. Where before t was like 2 minutes.
- WIN2K Server
- Always do Windows updates ( the important ones )
- It's an Intel P4 | 1 gig of ram | 2.4 Ghz
- Sometimes it take long to install a 2 megs update. I always run registry fixers and it works.
- Mcafee scan every Saturday
- Used HJT posted here http://forums.techguy.org/t390197.html
- Use adaware | spybot |crapcleaner | MS Anti spyware | CW Sheedder
I'm going to do more during the week but anyone have more advice they can give
I have a stupid question that I can't find an answer to on MS website. I have an NT 4 domain, and I want to add a Win2k member server to it. All this server will do is run SQL and IIS so that we can prototype an intranet.
Can I add the Win2k server to my NT domain without screwing up my NT network? Is there anything I need to worry about/be careful when I do this? Or should I make the Win2k box a PDC in its own domain and set up a trust?
Upgrading my whole network to Win2k is not an option right now.
Thanks in advance!
Yes you can add a Windows 2000 Member server to an NT domain. Don't bother trying to setup Active directory though. It will not work in that situation.
Since a member server does not do authentication, it will not affect the structure of the NT domain.
Please help!!! I have a Win2K Member Server with IIS 5.0 set up on my domain. We have recently had a problem where the server will deny access everynight and sometimes once thru the day. No services are stopped everything is running. No permissions have been changed. If I stop and restart the services it fixes the problem, but I have no idea what is causing this to happen. Every morning when I come in I have to go stop and start the services so people can access our web page. t.i.a.
Just built a small network (win 2k server- 4xp pro workstations) joined machines to server fine, yet following reboot all individual workstations take forever to log on. Is this a problem with me not removing any unneeded protocol's, or do I need to find a .bat file that will help speed up the problem ?
Any help or input would be appreciated.
I'd start by checking the event logs to see if there are any time-out errors.

I am connecting to a win2k server with remote desktop client and think that the limit on colors is 256. In server 2003 they changed it so you can increase the colors.
I want to view a security camera feed and at 256 colors it looks bad.
Is there anyway I can increase the default 256 color setting in terminal services in win2k server or is the only solution to upgrade to server 2003.
Okay, I finally got the server set-up. Now I am attempting to change all my workstations, to make them logon the domain instead of the workgroup.
The connection appears to be intermittant at best. When I tell the workstation to use our domain, I receive a welcome message (thats good). But, within minutes, I lose the connection to the server. While transferring data, I received the error message: "the session has expired". I've continuously ping the server from the workstaion (and vice versa), and had no problems. I beleive this may be a problem with my settings, but I don't know what to change.
I have a server, Win2k w/sp3. Last week it began to act flakey, just dropping network connections, slowness, etc..
I rebooted the server, and it took forever for the server to come backup. I thought it was a fluke, and rebooted again. Same results.
I noticed once it came up that the network icons were not in the bottom right corner, so I tried to go to network properties to view the nic cards, and the system didn't respond. This happens from network neighborhood, start control panel networking.... or from start settings network and dialup...
Also, if I attempt to stop or start any service, it hangs and gives me an error 1053 service timed out.
This is the only error that it replys with. Nothing in the event log.
I have you checked the NIC cables?
Unplug and replug them.
I am getting a bunch of errors on a server and don't know what they mean. Can anyone give me an idea of what could be causing this?
Registration of the DNS record '_ldap._tcp.a2f3f91e-1843-4e8b-8be1-50e8102f254d.domains._msdcs.gcgr.com. 600 IN SRV 0 100 389 gcgrapplication.gcgr.com.' failed with the following error:

Are you running multiple DC's in a parent child fashion? If so check this out -
If not check all your servers DNS settings and make sure its pointing to the internal DNS resolver and you have DNS forwarders on that headed out to your ISP.
This is my first thread, so I am new here.
I gotta problem, I am dual booting between win2K pro and server. When I try to access folder or file properties(for example to set NTFS permissions or Quota) on win 2k Pro, everything is ok.However on server , I am not able to.I am not receiving any messages,I am logged on as a Admin.I can access only properties of My Computer and My DOcuments on the Desktop.THis is really frustrating.I also cannot access share.Could anyone help me?Please?
Were the files/Folder created in win2k Pro or Server ?? if Win2K Pro could be a permissions thing if you aren't logging in using the same ID and Password (i.e. as Admin) admin dosesn't automatically have all rights to all folders (especially user home directories) check permissions under win2kPro and then under win2kServer
If anyone has gotten this message in win2k, I have found a fix. It is a relatively simple registry hack. [In only took me three hours to fix my wife's computer]
I've got a Windows 2000 Server which just doesn't want to update it's time correctly via "time.windows.com" or our "local" "tick.nml.csir.co.za" or "tock.nml.csir.co.za".
The event log keeps on spitting the following out:-
Source: w32time Event Id: 14
"Attempt to set time which differs by more than 12 hours aborted"
I've followed the registry adjustments as per Microsoft to the word, and configured the time manually to be in sync. Yet I am still receiving this Event Error....
Should I adjust my local time zone??? to ... coher with another time zone. Yet my users will not dig it.
P.S. My server's time zone is: GMT+2:00 Harare, Pretoria - South Africa
Try using time.nist.gov as a time server.

I am on a win2k avanced server that someone who is no longer around setup. Its been running and I had access to everything and I thought I had been logged in as administrator. However, I just had to reboot, logged back in as administrator but I no longer have access to any of my desktop items or programs. The only thing I seem to have access to is the "active directory users and computers" from the administator tools menu.
How can I give the administrator full access?
I have a domain called teststuff
I have a cable router that is being used for both dns & dhcp
I have since loaded win2k server and made it the dns server
So my router is only the dhcp server
I have 3 win9x clients that I want to manage
I have tried to manage these clients but have not been able to
Does this mean that I can not or that I have not set up the dns server the right way or what
Please just give me the low down
I am in desperate need of a solution
What I want to do is to manage the Policy editor from within win2k
please help me

Strange thing occur on my Windows 2000 Advance server. When I try to shutdown or logoff from the server it bring me back to the desktop. It would NOT allow me to shutdown.
Please let me know why???
Thanks in advance.
It could be related to the power settings. If you havent already done so, download SP1.
Can anyone give any advice? Thanz in advance.
Depending on the installation options you ran for IE 5.5 on the Win95 box, it may not have installed the correctly updated Virtual Machine drivers that are required. Try going here:
Download the VM build 3058 for Win95/98 and install it on the 95 box. That MAY fix your problem.
got a standalone win2000 server upgraded from NT4

Windows 2000 Server working perfectly until applying SP4. As soon as system was rebooted following install of SP4, system crashed with BSOD. Can not boot in safe mode and of course I have no recovery disks. Have used recovery console to disable ATI video drivers, and a couple of other items with no success. Stop error is as follows:

Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot would be greatly appreciated.
To make sure you are not experiencing a hardware issue why don't you unplug everything from the motherboard and plug the devices in one by one, turning on the machine each time, to see what device might be causing the problem. This includes the CD-Rom (which my research reveals is most often the culprit); but also the RAM and attached cards.
Once you figure out which device is causing the stop error go online and download the latest drivers for it.
People that have fixed this problem in the past either did what I just suggested and it worked, or they performed a fresh install of the OS instead of an upgrade.
I recently installed Win2K server and I am having problems using FTP, ICQ and any web related software besides browsers with my dialup ISP.
I connect to my ISP alright and can browse the web with no problems, but ICQ can't connect, I can't connect to any FTP site with my FTP program, I can't check my POP mail account. It says 'unable to reach host' whenever I try to do so.
I would greatly appreciate it if anyone has any suggestions
Thank You in Advance!
<LI> Do you have a personal Firewall installed? It is possible that the firewall software is blocking the ports needed to use your other services.
<LI> How are you connecting to the Internet? If you are on a corporate LAN, using MS PRoxy, you may need to install the Proxy client to be able to access ports other then port 80 (the web browsing port).
I have win2k server running with all service packs using two 60 gig hds on a raid 1 using a promise tx2 card. I was trying to add a second drive for a database using a sata tx2 raid 0 and as soon as i try to add the second card and bootup it does nothing.. I removed the first raid card and used a win98 boot disk and ran fdisk on the new drive and then tried adding the first card back and booting but it does nothing.. So next I removed hds from both cards and just left the cards in to see if that was the issue and when both cards are in it does nothing but when either is taken out it will atleast boot up with the 98 boot disk. Im thinking maybe an irq conflict? These are both pci raid cards
I moved a Win2K machine from a domain to a workgroup which uses a Linksys cable router as its DHCP server. I'm having trouble making the machine to pick up the new DHCP server. It thinks it cannot locate the DHCP service so it keeps getting assigned the APIPA (169.254.x.x) address. BTW, back in the domain, this machine was assigned a static IP address through client reservation because it was running a service. Does anyone have an idea? Thanks.
Have you changed all the domain settings so that its not still looking for the domain when it starts up? If the machine's name is part of a FQDN get rid of the extensions so that it has an "old fashioned" single name.
Also clear out all of the settings for DNS that may have been set, make them all blank in case the system is trying to find it that way.
Remove any other network protocols that are installed except TCP/IP.

I am in the process of migrating from a Netware server to a Windows server. I have had succes migrating files and programs (relatively easy). The biggest problem I've had is moving printers. I have one set of seven printers which have printed fine under the Novell NDS protocol for many years. My first thought was to install them on the Windows server and use those queues. I've had serious problems with that ranging from slow data transfer to jobs restarting randomly to jobs not starting at all. I have also tried setting up a Linux box dedicated to managing print queues, but have had similar problems. I thought maybe it was a hardware issue, but the Novell Print queues are still working like normal. I've been dealing with this for a while and am open to any suggestions as long as they involve clearing my network of IPX. Thanks.

i think my friend used one of those mini router/hubs from netgear or linksys that support port forwarding....but that again still leaves the port 80 wide open for periodic scanning that @home does...to be honest i'm not sure you can make that port steathy and yes still have your web site accassable via internet, maybe when you change the port # to something different and make sure that your www server doesnt reveal that its actually a web server...
also you may want to lookinto blackice software which should let you block the scanner from @home or any segment of ip's that it may be doing the scan from....
hope this helps or at least makes some sense...

We currently have a unique method of performing backups. It is working successfully but we have problems. WE have 6 hot swappable hard drives in removable enclosures. What the problem is when we remove the drive and insert the new drive it is unrecongnized. I have read various books on re-activating it with no luck. I do the import foriegn with no luck either. The only way to activate the drive is reboot the server. Then go to management and inport foreign. This works fine this way. I would really like to be able to remove one hot swappable drive and insert another. This server is a clone box with Asus Board running dual 933 w/1gig memory, RAID running off a Promise controller. The hot swap drive is running off the primary IDE port
Hey guys, I have 2 drives that I want to use as system drives, with 1 always on, and the other having an IDENTICAL configuration...but I don't want raid 1 or anything..I just want to be able to shut the comp down, change the boot order, and boot up cleannly.....well ya know.....low down time.....and since powerquest drive image doesn't work for Win2k Server, I was wondering what my options were for cloning of systems on the same hardware config with Win2k Server.
You really need PowerQuest V2i Protector Server Edition

I have a question.
I uninstalled Active Directory on a win2k server.
I used "dcpromo" to uninstall Active Directory.
I reinstalled Active Directory using the same server name but I wasn't able to use the origional NetBIOS name because the OS said it was already in use.
Is there a way to change the NetBIOS name while Active Directory is installed?

I question Win2k Vague Server m trying to get fax server software to run on a Win k Server machine When I start the app the hourglass appears for a second then disappears and the program never loads After troubleshooting attempts with several of the software publisher s tech reps one of reps finally gave up and claimed that the problem is probably caused by insufficient system specs--however the specs appear to meet the min requirements But if that were the problem would the program simply fail to load like it is doing Are there any Win k server experts who can suggest some things I might check to try to get this running I know it is a wide-open question with not a lot of info to go on--I m just hoping for some general ideas as to what direction I should take BTW I ve checked the system for viruses and it is clean The machine is an Intel X family Vague Win2k Server question model stepping which my research shows to be a Pentium equivalent which is Vague Win2k Server question the min requirement for the software Thanks nbsphttps://forums.techguy.org/threads/vague-win2k-server-question.236948/
Hi I have a windows advanced server sp with more pc s xp pro sp The network has settings win2k plus dns server modem dsl a domain and the server fixed dns settings win2k server plus dsl modem ip operates dhcp and dns The xp machines are set to automatic detect settings for LAN and used to have individual dial up conns for internet with relevant settings in dns settings win2k server plus dsl modem those connections This worked fine although slow internet until I got broadband and a broadband modem router This was installed on the LAN and given fixed Ip address of and i have pointed all the pcs to this as the default gateway Because now all pc s access both LAN and Internet via the one LAN connection on each machine only one set of settings can be used so there appears to be a problem with which dns to use The broadband modem also is capable of dhcp and dns server however these are disabled as the existing win server is already providing this for the domain dns settings win2k server plus dsl modem It seems now that if I point the dns on the xp s to the win server ie then the LAN works fine ie file and printer sharing etc but they dont have internet access If I point the xp s to the dns of the ISP ie talktalk net then they all have internet access but the LAN fails and pcs cant share If you try to click a mapped drive on another pc you get an error saying you do not have permission to access this and or it comes up with a logon screen asking for username and password If you put your original one in again an error says you have entered the same that you logged on with - windows has already tried these and there is no domain controller available to verify this logon or words very similar to these -I m working from memory as I m not there at the moment Can anyone tell me what settings to enter in the xp pc s and in the win server please nbsp

Windows Server is on a network with other PC s One PC has had Windows Xp for some time I believe the machine came with it as a matter of fact the other two PC s were upgraded from Win Having Sasser Win2K not? Server or with Worm issues to XP Pro recently The issue with the Windows Server machine is that it seems to issue a system message indicating that lsass exe has terminated unexpectedly with code and needs to close System starts a timer to shutdown which then shuts down and restarts the system after seconds Being a Win K box the shutdown command is not recognized like in XP This machine had no antivirus or firewall applications loaded when I got to it It was also in limbo for a year since someone came out and looked at it as it was still on SP Here s what I did -Ran the Sasser removal tool from Symantec nothing found -Applied the patch from MS - security bulletin for LSASS vulnerability everything OK -Followed instructions on creating a read-only log file in the systemroo debug Sasser Worm or not? Having issues with Win2K Server folder called dcpromo log This read only log file was supposed to stop the machine Sasser Worm or not? Having issues with Win2K Server from rebooting similar to the shutdown -a command on XP boxes but which Win K does not have -Unplugged the network cable this seemed to stop the LSASS service from rebooting the machine for now -Applied SP everything OK -Loaded up and ran AVG Antivirus with latest defs no viruses detected -Downloaded all the latest updates beyond SP About - updates were downloaded from the Windows Update site and installed everything OK -Checked for Sasser-related files in Windows directory nothing found -Checked out HKLM Sofware Microsoft Windows CurrentVersion Run key in Registry nothing unusual there and nothing related to Sasser worm set to load from there -I loaded a simple firewall Zonealarm Free Edition just so I could have some sort of protection but I think I may need to go back and put something made for server OS s such as Mcafee Firewall or Tiny Software Firewall When Sasser Worm or not? Having issues with Win2K Server I loaded up the firewall and plugged the network cable back in Zonealarm was asking if I wanted to grant permission to allow LSA to access the internet which I denied However I allowed permission to LSA for the Trusted Zone I created for the LAN IP range - Allowed DNS to access the internet as well as Winlogon when they asked permission But even with these settings on the firewall in place the server issued the same message about lsass exe after about minutes and rebooted My question is should I use a different firewall I was going to try McAfee s product and or Tiny Software I was also thinking of running a virus scan on the other machines on the network as two of the workstations the ones upgraded from - gt XP Pro had no antivirus programs either but do not act like machines infected with any sort of spyware or viruses as they are lightning fast for P - s Would running SIGVERIF to look for any digitally unsigned files help either The only other option is the customer purchased a copy of Windows Server I think I read somewhere that with the default security settings on that it mitigates the lsass exe error Any help would be much appreciated Thanks nbsphttps://forums.techguy.org/threads/sasser-worm-or-not-having-issues-with-win2k-server.367460/
Was asked this question by a acquaintance the other day and did the
normal research and came up blank. Question is this; Is there a limit to the
number of users that can can use win2k server or is the users unlimited
like in winnt server edition? The best answer i could come up with was
there was a limit of 10 users and if you wanted to use IIS then you were
out of luck as far the Internet goes. Since I don't believe in giving out
false political statements, I was wondering if someone could give me
some info or point me in the right direction. Thanks in advance. Flixx.
how do i put my win2k server comp into safe mode? I need to stop a process and i cant in normal mode. The program quits responding when i try to install and uninstall programs.
Pressing F8 while the computer boots up will get you to the boot up options menu. From there you should see the safe mode option.
how to remove win2k server with xp pro dual boot
I know this sounds a little strange, but my xp pro cd wouldn't boot and i don't have a floppy the laptop. i was able to get finally boot the system and install Win2k Server (120 day eval). from here i then installed xp pro. the system is set to start with xp pro and i know how to remove the win2k line from boot.ini. my problem is there is only 1 winnt folder (i assume it is for both). am i missing something here? also, i just noticed that my pagefile.sys is 1.48GB, is this accurate for a fresh install?
This all depends on how you installed XP and what you told the XP installation routine to do with the Win2K installation. If, as I suspect, you've installed XP and Win2K on the same partiton, I'm surprised that it even works!Putting that aside, can you boot into both the Win2K and the XP installations successfully? If so, then boot into the XP installation.Open up Windows Explorer and ensure that you can view Hidden and System files.Locate the boot.ini file in the root of the boot drive (usually C:\)Right click on it and remove the Read Only check markCopy the boot.ini file with another name (I'd suggest boot.BAK)Then right click on boot.ini and select "Open"Here's an example of what one looks like:[boot loader]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINNT="Windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetectIn your case, it's likely that there will be some differences:- the \WINDOWS will likely be \WINNT- the partition(1) value should be the same for both installationsSo, what you'll do is delete the value for the Win2k installation. You'll also have to make sure that the default= line points to the WINNT directory that your XP installation is in. Once all that's done, save the file then re-make it Read-Only. Then reboot and check to see if it works.
Read this original post from webhostingtalk forum. Just curious if it really works.
"I got a win2k dedicated server just so that I could login through the terminal services and open paypal.com so that they don't detect my IP address."
I have a new question:
What is the maximum partition size on C:/ where the OS WIN2K Server is installed and other programs?
I have the Disks (9x 9.1GB Cheetah) in Raid 5 working.
Till now on C:/ I have 8GB partition size but going out on space on C:/
I have PowerQuest Server Magic 4.0 installed.
Could you please help me in answering my above question and how to proceed with PowerQuest if I can increase the Partition size?
Many thanks in advance
Anyone know if there si a free antivirus program for windows 2000 server that can be downloaded, updated and scan? I only need this to work once, so if it's a trial version, that is ok too. Thank you!!
I'm sure Panda or Housecall would be fine (both free, should work with your platform.
AVG may also be good (free as well)

I'm handling a win2k advanced server as a firewall in my department. Before this, we're using linux RH9 and in linux, i can even view current activities of all clients within the network using ETHERAPE programme. Is win2k server provides any similar facilities??
Thanks in advanced.
My com have one OS (WindowXP)
I want to use Multi Operting system WinXP and Win2K
After Install Win2000 Server the my WinXP cannot startp
It show message :
I think this problem about Master boot record error
but my win2K don't have any problem
Hope I have explained everything simply
Thanks for all ........
You always install the older OS BEFORE the newer OS. In this case, Win2K first and then WinXP. Just an FYI.
Also, I'm afraid that your WinXP partition is toast.
I recently installed win 2000 advance server on one of my computer. The purpose of doing this is because I want to restrict users at home so that they can use the computer only at a certain time. That mean, I want them to log on when allowed, and when the log on time expired, the computer will log them out automatically.
This is a stand- alone computer. After I run dc-promo to promote it to a domain controller. I used the Policy to enforce restriction. THe results: Users can only log on at the time I indicated.
THe problem: The computer doesn't log them out when logon time expired.
Please help me to find a way, so that Users can log on when time allowed AND log out is a must when log on time expired (OR the PC will shut down automatically)
(Please provide details)
i have been trying to install ms proky 2.0 to a windows 2000 server and wil not install it says it is not complianent with iis 4 os i disabled iis in the serveces but it wants to and a file to iis and will not let the installl go how do i get around this !!!!
Ok, this is real easy, just need to get a Update patch for Proxy to run on win2000. Here is the link.
After that it should be a breeze.
Infinity Networking and PC's
I have over 300 MB of uninstall patches. They are in C:\WinNT\$ntunintallQ######$ - where # are numbers. I also have one that is C:\WinNT\$ntservicepackuninstall$ I'm fairly sure these are safe to delete once I've made sure everything is working fine. But, I just want to be sure before I get rid of these.
So, are these safe to delete?

You can delete the following entry from Winampa.exe
Also try to uninstall the antivirus and test. Then reinstall the antivirus.
What are the system specs?
Is this a domain controller?
Are you running IIS, DNS, DHCP, SQL all from the same machine etc...
What is slow?
I need to set up a Windows 2000 Server as a PDC. It will host files and an ACT database. No Exchange. No external web service. Can anyone point me to an online resource or a book that will help me through the process?
Would someone be so kind as to break down the process of drive mapping for me. Heres where we are at the mo.
I have one win2k domain controller and 35 machines running XP Pro. (all theoretical) I have joined each client PC to the domain (corp.com) using system applet then changed work group and domain name (YES???). At the PDC I have added these machines and a number of user accounts. Set up printers and all the assorted user policies etc. User profiles are roaming.
Ok what would you then do if you were me to allow users to save My Docs data back to the server. Step by Step.
Is it possible to change the boot disc on a win2k server?
1. My harddisc partially crashed (all partitions are NTFS, including boot partition), but I was still able to boot from the disc using a NT4 Server installation present on the disc.
2. Installed a new HD, booted from the old one using NT4 Server,
added the disc, formatted it, installed win2k Server on it.
3. Moved all data still intact from the old disc.
4. If I remove my old disc it won't boot, since it's configured as boot disc. Need to change it, can't mark it as active in Disc Manager...
Any ideas? (Looks like I have to do it all over again, removing the old disc first, fresh install to the new one, attach the old and then move the data.)
We have several Win 2000 servers tied into a domain. What I want to do is make a local admin only account on one of the servers, but when you make an account it's automatically domain admin.
Any ideas on how to do this?
I have just made some changes to my PageFile settings in Win2k server and am getting strange results.
I made a 2.5GB partition for the PageFile and allocated the entire amount as the pagefile to reduce fragmentation and increase performance. However the Virtual Memory settings do not reflect the correct amount and I'm getting some strange errors: "Delayed Write Back Failed writing to Device .... " which might be related.
In the screen I've posted you can see that the total VM amount does not equal what I've allocated. Obviously there was, originally, a PageFile on Drive C, but I got rid of it and put one on Drive F. In any case the PageFile on Drive C was 1.5GB and 1.5+2.5 does not equal 5.5!
Any ideas about what's happening??
I observed that sometimes one software( websites, games ...) showed differently in win2k and win98. In games, the intros in win98 had sometthing that did not show in win2k. In webssites, win98 showed a different page( introductory) than in win2k. Can someone explain explain it?
Windows 98 runs a graphical user interface (GUI) on top of DOS.
Windows 2000 Professional runs a GUI on top of the NT kernel.
The operating systems are very different. Many programs that run on Windows 98 will also run on Win2K since Win2K was designed with some backward compatibility in mind, but not many programs designed to run on Win2K will run on Windows 98 because the underlying operating systems are so different.
I am looking for a software that would allow me to use my computer as a gateway, i.e. get the input from the COM port of another computer and direct it to Ethernet address. Please lemme know. Thanks.
Does the oem version of the os install like the retail version? Do I have to format my hard drive?
Is there any difference between the 2 installations?
Hello everyone As you all can see I m a new user and Logon directories Server: Win2k & Home scripts from what I ve seen maybe this ll become my site-o-choice for computer problems Anyhow I ll go on to my problem Also FYI I m not sure how much in-depth posts go so I ll detail fully and if you MODS feel it Win2k Server: Logon scripts & Home directories s uneeded feel free to edit out the boring stuff Ok I had a fairly complex system of shares and network links in my little computer network All comps are running Win SE fully updated http windowsupdate microsoft com After an attack at my PWS running on one of the machines and several other incidents I decided to get a Win K Server to control a domain and so I could centralize all my data shares backup data replication The machine will also be hosting my FTP site HTTP site and a few other quot shell quot type accounts for myself and others Setting up the domain was beautiful and so was creating logon scripts network shares home directories and user rights This is my first use of Win K server as I ve always used WinNT before and haven t really needed a server on teh network before this Now for the problems I said before that I have no problem making logon scripts but what I am having a problem is getting them to run upon logon to a computer in the network I ve tried defining the script in the user profiles and in both the group and local policies The script can be run manually by navigating to servername netlogon logon bat but no matter what I try it just doesn t want to run on it s own Home directories I have them set up shared and permissioned for each respective user and in the logon bat I have the command quot net use p home quot which I think is the correct syntax for mapping the logical drive p to servername username but I keep on getting a quot syntax error quot when I run the script manually look up that s why I have to run it manually right now I looked on support microsoft com and I still think I have the correct syntax so I decided to abondon that line in the script and just assign p to the user s home dir in each account profile still to no avail I have a hunch that both of these problems are linked somehow to some security policy setting I am overlooking so that s why I am posting both of them together Thanks in advance for your time in helping me solve this problem nbsp
As I've read through the forums, I've noticed this might be better off asked in "Networking" but since it's a 2K issue, maybe this is the right spot for it. Either way if the belongs in a different forum, please don't hesitate to move it.
We have Windows 2000 server with Proxy 2.0 installed. We also have our Exchange 5.5 sp4 on an NT 4.0 server sp6.
Here is the problem. Port 110 is dropping and comming backup by itself. I have port monitoring software running on our proxy server and it is showing that port 110 is dropping but, Only on our Windows 2000 proxy 2.0 box. When port 110 goes down the monitor software still shows port 110 on the Exchange Server as running.
Port 110 on our Win2k server with Proxy 2.0 is dropping.
Port 110 on Exchange stays up while Proxy is dropping it.
Anyone have any Idea why this would be happening.
Now I have restarted the Internet Mail Service (Service) on our Exchange box. This did seem to stop the problem up until the point we restarted our Exchange Box. Now the problem is occuring again.
Thanks for any help.
I have tried to figure out what is happening with your system, but I don't know why Proxy Server would be dropping port 110 at all.
Now as far as Exchange staying up, shouldn't it keep the port open when the proxy server goes down? I am not certain about this, but our email server stays up even when the proxy server goes down and does not drop the port. We are not running Exhange though, so it may behave different than our Netscape Messaging server.
I need to move my 3 disk raid 5 out of my win2k server box and into my vista ultimate x64 box.
