Disk Read Error on boot, Hard Drive Short DST Check fails

Q: Disk Read Error on boot, Hard Drive Short DST Check fails

I have a two year old HP Pavillion (now a year out of waranty) that crashed and now returns "disk read error press ctl+alt+del to restart" when attempting to boot. Using the diagnostic tools avialable under F2, I get the following failure: Hard Drive Short DST Check: FailedFailure ID: GLL3S1-76684P-MFPV7G-60RA03Product ID: E9Z18AV Would anyone be so kind as to tell me what this particular failure ID code means? Thank you.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

The hard drive has failed and will need to be replaced. A retail laptop SATA hard drive can be used-Western Digital, Seagate, Toshiba, etc. Just be sure to get one of at least equal capacity as the original in order to use Recovery Media to install Windows. It can be larger, but not smaller capacity. For instance if you have a 500GB hdd you could use a 750GB hdd but not a 320GB hdd. Your model is not one of the easiest to replace hdd on but the Maintenance & Service Guide will help you or your chosen repair shop.http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c04438537

I have a Dell XPS 15z laptop, spec. is i7-2640 processor, 8GB memory, 750GB hard drive. The problem is that it often freezes and when restarted it suggests no hard drive, "No boot device found". If I go into the BIOS there is no hard drive, if I boot into the diagnostics screen (F12) and run thr tests on the hard drive it comes up as passed, if I then restart the laptop it will boot into windows 7 Ultimate.
Evertime it freezes it won't boot after a restart unless I run diagnostics then it will start OK.
My thoughts are that it is hard drive, although all tests I have carried out on it suggest its OK, one of the times it booted into windows I ran the Seagate seatools and it was fine.
Anyone any suggestions as to the cause?

Sorry, message at start is "A disk read error occurred", not sure if that makes any difference to your thoughts.
I reformatted and reloaded the software to see if that made any difference but the problem still persists.

First off I have a HP 2000 Notebook PC with Windows 8 and I used Internet Explorer 10.

Processor Name : AMD E-300APU with Radeon ™ HD Graphics.

A few days ago, my computer started getting slower & slower, not responding, freezing up and even going to a blue screen before coming back to the page I was at.

So I put it in Safe Mode with Networking and ran Malwarebytes full scan - nothing.

Then I hit F2 at reboot and ran some of the tests on there - Battery was Okay, memory was okay, but this one failed :

Hard Drive Short DST Check - Software Error

Failure ID : RSG080-6P579C-MFGJXG-60VS03

Does this mean I need to update with windows update, that there isn't enough memory or does it mean my Hard Drive needs to be replaced? This laptop is only 1-1 1/2 years old....

A:Hard Drive Short DST Check Failed - Software Error?!

Your hard drive is probably failing. I would get your important data off it as soon as possible. After your important data is off download Seatools for Windows and do a diagnostic to confirm the hard drive failure.

So this really irritates me because I just spent hundreds of dollars sending my laptop to HP last year because the hard drive completely failed. I have a 1TB hybrid hard drive and 22Gb solid state used for caching.  When I booted up my computer Intel Rapid Storage Technology said there was an issue.  When I opened it, it says that the status of: SATA disk (932 GB)(System) Accelerated, is Failed.  My SATA_Array_0001 22GB is fine though.  So I ran a System Quick Test, everything passed except Hard Drive Short DST Check: FAILEDFAILURE ID: Q4MP7Q-6RA82U-MFGJWK-60W303 This is weird because other than the computer telling me there is something wrong every time I restart it, It seems to run just fine.  Im just worried because I don't want it to randomly die on me one day.

A:SATA disk failed and Hard Drive Short DST Check: Failed

Hi there @nmulji,  Thank you for joining in on the HP Support Forums and Welcome! This is a great place to ask questions, find solutions and get help from others in the community! I read your post on the HP Support Forums and understand that the Hard Drive in your HP ENVY TouchSmart 15t-j100 Select Edition CTO Notebook PC failed the Short DST Check.  SMART (Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology System) uses a technology known as predictive failure analysis to tell you when a hard drive failure is imminent. Have you tried to Restore the BIOS? If not, please try this step first. Then, just to be on the safe side, back up your data that way it does not get lost. However, there might be certain conditions that cause a hard drive failure message to display when a problem does not exist (a false positive). To fix false positive hard drive errors, please try updating the hard drive firmware. You can check whether an update is available by going to the  Get software and drivers page. You will need to put in your Model Number and then click the links that pertain to the computer configuration and see if a hard drive update is available.  You could also try to do a  Disk Defragment to consolidate files and move them to another section of the drive where errors are less likely to occur. Did this reply resolve your issue or answer your question? If yes, then please share the good news! Let others know this reply was helpful by clicking the Accept as Solution button. You can also show your appreciation by clicking the Thumbs Up. If you require further assistance, I would be more than happy to continue to help you. Please re-post with the results of the troubleshooting. Thanks!

A:Hard Drive canNOT Be Read, Computer won't boot. Read Error

Hi malpert and welcome to the TechSpot Forum

As a laptop only has the ability to support 1 harddrive your option is to remove the drive from the laptop and connect it to a desktop PC using a 2.5" to 3.5" adaptor and try to read the files on it, however I would download the test tools from the makers website and run a thorough test on the drive to ensure readability of the drive.

Remember though if the drive has failed mechanically then any data may be lost and you will need to use one of the professional data recovery services such as "ontrack data recovery" to get it back.

Backup, backup and backup is the mantra when it comes to important data...

Hi, i have hp pavilion g6 laptop and its upgraded from windows 8 to 8.1 then windows 10.  From last few days i was getting "Memory_Management", "Kernel_Data_Inpage_Error" and so many other errors with blue screen. Due to this i have to power off the system from main power button by holding for few seconds. Now i was getting hang problem. I saw in task manager that DISK UTILIZATION was 100%. I did a hardware test where i got below results : HARD DRIVE SHORT DST Check : WARNING HARD DRIVE Optimized DST Check  : FAILEDFAILURE ID: 9U3UWX-6KT85B-MFPWWJ-61Q003 Can anybody tell me how to resolve this or i need to replace the hard drive. -ThanksPankaj

A:Hard Drive Short DST Check : WARNING and Optimized DST Check...

Yes you need to replace the hard drive. Since you have upgraded to Windows 10 it is very easy to get recovery media directly from the Microsoft Media Creation Tool. For most people, the problem is not physically swapping out the hard drive, but restoring the operating system since they do not have recovery disks. Post back if you want a service manual and/or video showing the replacement, purchase options for a new hard drive and step-by-step for restoring Windows 10. We would need the full model...g6-????

Hi nbsp As stated I have an HP envy laptop that I purchased year ago Just days ago my warranty has ended At the same point in time I was also trying to roll back to a previous windows install as there was a pesky app that was installed when I lend the laptop to my friend When I got it back it works just fine but it had that malware in it that I want to remove nbsp So I fired up system restore and go on restoring It finished doing so until nbsp it restarts When it restarts I was stuck in the loading screen with the HP logo for hours to which I decide to fire up the restore through the recovery media All works well until I got stuck in the installation I got stuck at When I searched on the internet why the reason might be because the wi-fi adapter is still on I am able to open it SM... Long Short DST check but Disk DST and passed Hard failed, up and take it off for a moment But because I need to go to work I decided against it I turned the laptop off and set off nbsp When I got back I can't even let it proceed to the installation saying that there's an issue with teh windows install and it needs to reboot Did that same thing several times and nothing happened nbsp Then I decided to go to BIOS and do the hard disk check It passed the SMART test but failed the Short DST as well as Long DST It produced the error code nbsp MFUC T- RG K-CD WMG- DK nbsp Is it possible for me to resolve the issue by my own through another reinstall Or is the HDD really is ruined If this is the case I'm probably just going to go ahead and replace it with an SSD

A:Hard Disk Short DST and Long DST check failed, but passed SM...

Whenever the Hard Disk Short DST test fails that indicates that the Hard Disk Drive has failed and that requires a replacement to resolve the issue This issue could be due to Application or driver conflicts, virus issues, file corruptions due to incompatible applications, improper shutdowns, update failures due to conflicts, sudden power surges, if notebook is dropped etc.. HP will provide a replacement Hard Disk Drive if the Notebook warranty is Active, If not you need buy a SATA Hard Disk Drive from a retail shop nearby Please make sure you are getting at least equal capacity as the original one in order to use Recovery Disks. If you need you can buy a larger, but not smaller capacity Hard Disk Drive. For example if you have a 500GB Hard Disk Drive you can upgrade it to 750GB Hard Disk Drive but not 320GB Hard Disk Drive Please try the below shown troubleshooting steps once:Step 01. Remove the battery and unplug the AC/Power AdapterStep 02. Press and hold the Power button for more than 30 SecondsStep 03. Plug in the AC/Power Adapter (leave the Battery out for now)Step 04. Press the Power button and check if the Unit works normal If the above mentioned steps does not help, then you can try reseating the Hard Drive on your Notebook If the issue persists again please Contact HP if your HP Notebook is under warranty, HP would replace the Hard Disk Drive and provide you a Recovery media to restore factory operating system after replacement (if you've not yet created Recovery Discs/USB Media) Note: Back up all the personal data to an external drive if it's possible. Otherwise you could connect the failed HDD via SATA to USB adapter with another PC or same PC after replacement of HDD & re-installation of OS and try copying /recovering the files. When I boot up my computer, I get the message:

A disk read error has occurred
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart

Even when I press Ctrl+Alt+Del, I just get the same message after it restarts. I cannot boot into safe mode - when I press the safe mode key (F8) it just brings me to a boot selection. If I select my hard drive to boot from, I get the disk read error again.

I have already tried unplugging and replugging the cables on the drive.

My drive is a Seagate 160 GB IDE (2.5 years old). It has also been making a clicking sound (that I think was the hard drive) for the past couple weeks.

Is my hard drive completely dead? There isn't anything really important on the hdd since I just reformatted, and its still under warranty.

ETA: The computer is recognizing the hard drive in the BIOS.

Had this laptop for about 6 years, had a few issues in the past, but nothing major like this. After, I ran a system dianostic, the result shown that the Hard drive short DST failed. Not totally sure how to do a recovery, I do have the Recovery Discs, so I searched up how to run the discs; turned on the system- press f11-  window loading files- window starting- then it just stuck on a window blue screen with nothing but the cursor. Can I even use the Recovery Discs? I want to replace the old HDD with a new SSD, but I'm not sure if I have to install a new OS or can I recover the old hard drive OS and transfer to the SSD?

A:Hard Drive failure (Hard Drive Short DST Check: Failed)

DST:Fail means  the hard drive has failed and will need to be replaced. If you are still in warranty HP will send a replacement. If not a retail laptop SATA hard drive can be used. Just be sure to get one of at least equal capacity as the original in order to use Recovery Discs. It can be larger, but not smaller capacity. For instance if you have a 500GB hdd you could use a 750GB hdd but not a 320GB hdd.

Tried it w/ Norton System Works(went to their website for a fix but it was no help) and tried it thru properties, tools, under my C: drive with the same result. When the blue screen appears for the dsik check I get the same message-- cannot open volume for access-- disk check stops and XP then loads. Never had this problem in the past. It would ususally take about 20 min for it to run the check and fix any errors. Thanks for any suggestions on how to fix this so I can kepp my hard drive healthy.KDR

Often this is caused by v.5 of ZoneAlarm. If you are using it, go to their site. They recommend installing v.4.5. If that is not the case. try running it from the Recovery Console or from a floppy:

Hi, Sadly to say, the HDD on your machine failed. The following link shows its specs:          http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=c03663774 You can replace larger (capatity) and faster HDD. Any standard 2.5" SATA HDD on the market today can do the job. You need Recovery media to rebuild your machine. Did you create one ? Otherwise, please try:              http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/bph07143 Regards.

Stop using the laptop. Replace the hard drive with a new one. Get a SATA to usb adapter to connect the old drive (which you will remove) to another computer to try to salvage data. There is a good chance data is still recoverable this way.

I know my hard drive is failing. I cannot boot my computer tried every method. It's in the automatic repair loop. I'm going to have to send it in I'm pretty sure of it. However I was able to access the notepad through the command prompt and noticed that I can still see my files in different folders. Is there a way for me to back up my files? Is there a way I can access a program from command prompt and transfer files? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

try using ubuntu
------------------------------------------------------------------------

UBUNTU Stand Alone DVD

Note the latest version of UBUNTU needs a DVD to use and boot from

if you only have CDs then you can use an older version, version 10 or 11 from this archive list
http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/releases/

It may be possible to boot from another Operating System
This will at least test the Hardware and also see if you can see the Harddrive and possibly get any of your data off.

If you have another PC with a DVDwriter and spare DVD
Download the ISO http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop

UBUNTU version 14 http://releases.ubuntu.com/14.10/
For almost all PCs. The following ISO 32Bit image will work on most machines with Intel/AMD/etc type processors and almost all computers that run Microsoft Windows, as well as newer Apple Macintosh systems based on Intel processors.
http://releases.ubuntu.com/14.10/ubuntu-14.10-desktop-i386.iso

You can also run from a USB device now - if the Machine supports booting off a USB Stick
http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download
http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/create-a-usb-stick-on-windows

A tutorial is here BUT this is for version 9 - so the start up options are slightly different
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/wind...backup-files-from-your-dead-windows-computer/

click on the image "download ubuntu"
Select a location
then begin download
Save the file onto your PC ? remember where you saved it ? so you can find it again to create the image bootable DVD.

You do NOT copy the ISO file onto a DVD - you have to use the ISO to create a bootable DVD
The DVD creator software you have on the PC may have an option to create an image from an ISO

If not - use this free program http://www.imgburn.com/ - Choose the option Write image file to disc
Be very careful when installing , as imgburn now includes and installs a load of unwanted programs, so make sure you read each page during the installation and decline them ALL
OR
you can use this stand alone ISO Burner to burn the ubuntu onto DVD ftp://terabyteunlimited.com/burncdcc.zip

If you need any help burning these images to disk, see the Image Burning Guide, from the ubuntu website.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto

When the UBUNTU DVD boots - you will see a screen - with Language on the left panel and two option images labelled

== > Try ubuntu
== > Install ubuntu
You can try Ubuntu without making any changes to your computer, directly from this DVD

Use "Try ubunto" ONLY. This option will run from the DVD and "will not" install onto your harddrive
Be careful, if you do install onto the PC - you will wipe the data and software OFF your hard drive.., you have been warned, only use the option "try ubuntu"
Now you should see a UBUNTU desktop
This at least proves the main parts of the PC are working
NOTE: if you only see a black screen - then this is a known issue, and can be resolved by using the following:-
On some hardware configurations, you need to set some kernel parameters for ubuntu to boot or work properly. A common one is nomodeset, which is needed for some graphic cards that otherwise boot in to a black screen or corrupted splash, acpi_osi= to fix lcd backlight and other problems.

A:Hard drive Short DST check failed

Hi @Himanshu9001, Thank you for visiting the HP Forums! A great place where you can find solutions for your issues with help from the community! I have looked into your issue about your HP Pavilion Notebook and getting the start up error message failure ID. This error is DST Short Test Failure code. What that means is your Hard drive could be failing. I recommend  the first thing you should do is back-up all your personal files etc as soon as you can. Wondering if maybe reseating the Hard Drive would help. After you reseat it I would run the Hardware Diagnostics again. Please get back to me how this goes. If this post helps you to resolve the issue you can click the Thumbs up icon to show gratitude! Thanks.

Hi, The 24 character error code is a failure of the short Disk Self Test and would indicate that the Hard Drive is failing and needs to be replaced. As your notebook shipped with Windows 10, it is probably still under warranty, so contact HP and arrange to have the drive replaced - If needed, you can check your warranty status Here. If you live in the US, contact HP Here. If you are in another part of the world, start Here. Regards, DP-K

Hi I'm new to the forums so I hope this is the right place to post this nbsp But anyways I basically dropped my HP Notebook -f Fail? DST Check Drive Short Hard dx and now it won't boot Hard Drive Short DST Check Fail? When I turn it on it goes to the loading screen for a few seconds and then goes to a blank black screen and after a long while a blue screen that has an 'Unmountable Boot Volume' error Sometimes it starts and says 'Preparing Automatc Repair' but only for a few seconds again then it goes back to the black screen and the same error I saw some tutorials but it involved me getting a bootable CD or USB drive and I tried that and it still won't work It just makes the loading screen stay on a little longer then goes back to the error So I ran a System Quick Check and it failed the Hard Drive Short DST check I don't know what any of this means do I need a new laptop nbsp

A:Hard Drive Short DST Check Fail?

It appears the impact of dropping your computer damaged the hard drive. The Hard Drive Short  DST Check Fail error is an indication that the hard drive has failed or is about to fail. You will need to replace the hard drive with a like unit and use your HP Recovery Media to return the computer to a factory like state. If you didn't create your HP Recovery Media when you first setup your computer, you will have to purchase this media from HP. Please see USB - Windows 10 64b Recovery Kit to order the media or contact HP Customer Support to purchase the medai, If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to ask. Please click the White KUDOS "Thumbs Up" to show your appreciation

Hi I been using my laptop as usual today and all of a sudden a notification popped up saying hard drive failure imminent. I restarted the laptop, pressed f2 and ran a system test. Everything in the test passes expect from the Hard drive short dst check, which failed.Failure ID: 0SG2J1-7K289U-XD7WLJ-60VW03I'm not sure why this has occurred. I regular run virus scans and defrag the hard drive. The hard drive is 1TB and around 100GB is used. The laptop is only 2 years old and ran out of warranty around April/May (typical). I don't have any recovery disc or back ups, is the laptop now unusable? I try to boot up but the laptop either freezes on login or on desktop. I have all my uni work, including my dissertation report on there, please help.ThanksDale

An issue I had resolved a few months ago has begun occuring again wherein the laptop has difficulty loading things when started up and soon after crashes and has to be restarted I assume this means the hard drive has failed again and so I have no doubts about how to resolve this but I am posting this query to ask Why Why has a laptop I have had for not even a year DST short failure... drive again. Hard check at this point already had the same problem occur twice even with replacing the part that broke the first time I'm willing to assume it's something to do with excessive use as I will admit it is switched for a Hard drive short DST check failure... again. good part of most days often for several hours as I play games on Steam on it I do not currently plan to have the hard drive replaced again as this is clearly an issue that is going to keep occuring the way things are and so I may as well get a Hard drive short DST check failure... again. PC that won't break every time a gust of wind hits it Any information on why this is occuring and how it could potentially be prevented in the future is appreciated particularly if it provides a solution that doesn't involve paying an extortionate amount of money

Your hard drive must be replaced. Post back if you want specific help with that. On  your model it is manageable for the end user to do, although not real easy. Are you under warranty? Manual see p. 46.  If this is "the Answer" please click "Accept as Solution" to help others find it.

A:SATA Laptop Hard Drive "Disk Read Error"

This thread can be closed as #1 the issues has been resolved and #2 it doesn't look like anyone will be repying anyways.

Now, in the case that someone does stumble onto this thread here is an update....
Turns out the hard drive was physically damaged (or so I'm told). Since there was sensitive data on the drive I was being extra cautious and after removing the drive and connecting to another pc and seeing the drive but not the partitions or data I didn't even try FixMBR or anythinhg else becuase I didn't want to take the chance of further damage. I took the drive to a data recovery specialst who was able (for a small fee ofcourse) to recover the data. Since the laptop is still under warranty I took it into the store I bought it and told them the sit. Tehy gave me a new hard drive on the spot and I have now restored it back to normal. Thank You all and goodnight.

Have quite some experience with the aesus tools, never failed here, but have no idea about what went wrong in your case, can be anything, software or hardware. One thing:

Quote:
and selected to clone the disk from the external to the internal hard drive

Your process should have worked, but I have mostly done it the other way around > copying from the pc to the external, and then do the switch. Maybe worth a try. First fit the original hd back into the laptop and check it's booting fine and programs etc work well, maybe do a chkdsk, defrag, ccleaner and sfc job, then do the cloning (will clone it without even leaving windows).

(btw, current Todo bu is 5.0. And posting this using a new hd, cloned 10 minutes ago happy when all goes well)

A:?WinXP Pro: boot error "Primary hard disk drive not found"

Hi, Ed from San Diego,

A couple of things that might help.
You say "The CD drive starts, as if in auto run mode, but then stops without reading boot files. The CD drive will run from the Microsoft XP boot floppy, so the drive is ok.". This ain't necessarily so !  Just because the drive is spinning it doesn't mean it is reading. Can you borrow a drive and swap it for your own ?
It's not holding in the 'On' button for 30 seconds that resets it, it is turning the power off from the computer for 30+ seconds that does this. You can turn it off either at the wall or at the switch on the back of the computer's power supply, both have the same effect.

I will admit that I am as much in the dark as you are about what has caused your problem. I have had computers crash and / or just stop running for a number of reasons over the years, but never a time when the BIOS refused to recognise drives. I do have the situation on my own computer, where I have three HDDs two of which are the same model, and the BIOS occasionally has got confused about which is which. All this results in is a message at boot time 'No operating system found'. And all this entails is going into the BIOS and swapping the drive order around.

Best of luck,

Chris Cosgrove

A while ago I was cleaning out the inside of my Compaq Presario desktop (it was very dusty) and I had it laying down on it's side. Well, last night I was trying to watch a Jackie Chan DVD and stood it up so I could use the DVD. A couple minutes later, after the DVD had just begun to play, everything froze. Firefox wouldn't open, iTunes wouldn't open, Windows Media Player wouldn't close, I couldn't even stop anything with task manager. So I turned rebooted my computer manually, and it wouldn't start. The Compaq screen at the beginning would show up, and then an error saying "Cannot read disk, press Ctrl-Alt-Del to restart."

The only thing I can think of that could have caused this would be standing my computer up to watch the DVD damaged the hard disk. If this is the case, can it be fixed?

A:XP SP2 won't boot, says it can't read hard disk

One thing I forgot to add. Compaq has a recovery feature. From the Compaq screen at startup you press F10 and it apparently recovers your system automatically. I don't know if this will work since my C drive can't be read anyway, but if it is what will fix my computer then it won't hurt to do it. I have all of my word docs on Google docs, my email on Gmail, and my music is on my iPod i could just copy over to my computer. Just a thought...

I had a regular install of Windows 7 on a WD 1 TB drive with the usual C:\ as the boot drive.

I just got a new SSD, so I set up a parallel or dual boot of Windows 7 on the SSD which is set up as the B: drive.

So when I boot into the Windows on the SSD (B:\) and run the WEI, it fails because it can't write a file to the drive.

Any suggestions? - I don't want to start changing the drive numbers as that will mess up my file associations. I tried editing the xml files under the Performance directory, but still can't get it to work.

A:WEI fails (cannot write file to hard drive) Boot drive set to B:\

Generally B: is not assigned to a hard drive, but can be used for a volume. I don't know if this is the reason you are having problems. I'd think modern BIOS might not have an issue with this, but older BIOS always assumed A: and B: were floppy drives. A Guy

nope. Hard drives don't heal themselves, and once you get bad sectors, they are just going to multiply. Back up the data, and get a new HD.

You can run Microsofts Chkdsk utility on any drive which spins and whose controller and interface function, but if you want a detailed report then the very best software is probably Spinrite (many drives are cheaper to replace than a Spinrite licence though!)

Using Win8PESE80_builder.exe (also 82_builder.exe), trying to build Win8pe boot iso using Win8 pro retail downloaded ISO as the source (files copied from iso to HD folder).

I receive the error in the screenshot just after starting the build.

For those using google, error text is:

Can not detect windows 8 source!!!
You must select a folder with Windows 8 files in the 'Source Directory'

I did find one post at reboot.pro stating that source containing the file install.esd would not work as the file is encrypted, but that is the only reference to that.

Is anyone familiar with why this error occurs and how to work-around? I have no problem building from a win7 pro source.

you have selected L as your source directory?

look inside that \sources\ folder - do you have an install.wim or install.esd

Since this is the downloaded ISO, I can say for sure it is an install.esd - thus can not be mounted by winbuilder

A:Check Disk on External Hard Drive

Sounds like your drive has a bad sector or two. Let scandisk run; when it stalls it means it is hitting a bad sector, so it will go a lot slower, but when it finally finishes the bad sectors will be marked on the disk eliminating the stalling problem. Once this is complete, copy all of the data off of the drive so that you have a backup in case the drive fails later on down the road. Sometimes the drive will continue to run without any further issues for a long time, but if it starts getting bad sectors soon after, then it's probably on its way out.

I recently built a computer with my friend and everything has been fine until about 3 or 4 days ago when the CD/DVD drive stopped working properly.
The symptoms are that it will not read any disks regardless of their type i.e. program, video or audio.
However, the drive is definately receiving power and the Sata cable is connected because I have no trouble booting from the Windows 7 OS disk, as a test.

The drive is also not recognised in 'My Computer' and the properties info gives me the following message, 'Impossible to load peripheral driver for this hardware. Driver could be damaged or missing (Code 39)' (translated from the Italian).

For your info the drive model is an LG GH24NS50.

Thanks.

A:CD/DVD drive does not read any disks, but will allow boot from disk

Sounds like to me that you need to uninstall the drivers and then let windows find drivers for it. To do this go to My Computer and right click on the drive and go to properties, the click on the Hardware tab and then click properties at the bottom. A new windows will open and then you click on the Driver tab, the click Uninstall. Then you can restart the computer and windows should find the right drivers for the drive.

I had a 6.4GB Samsung hard disk that I wanted to backup, as it contained some information I needed.
Model name: SV0644A
I was using USB-PATA interface.
When the disk was making my computer stuck, I switched it off, then turned it back on, just to hear that loud screeching noise of death.
I turned it off, then turned it back on, and the noise was gone...for a second.
Then the disk failed to recognize, then the scratching noise, then disk powered itself off.
I am quite sure that there's something wrong with the head inside the disk, but it is strange.
When the scratching noise can be heard, the disk would be recognized, then it would power off. When it's not, it would just refuse to work.
Since I couldn't find user manual for this hard disk, I need your help.

That does not sound good at all. Have you run windows check disk? If it is your disk it will let you know. Other than that you might have some viruses on there.

I have a PC on which the hard drive died. I had previously done the Advisor and it said everything is OK for new install of Win 7 Home Premium.

I removed old hard drive and 2 gigs of memory (now 2 gigs installed) installed new hard drive, set appropriate ( i think) BIOS parms. When I start the DVD I get the 'loading files' message and the colorful logo then a blank screen with a large arrrow cursor -- and nothing. Wait 5, 10 15 minutes and the only hint of activity is the hard drive light is flickering about once every 2 seconds. I've now waited for over an hour and still nothing else. Any suggestions for solutions ?

I've tried to do all the things that have been suggested for others who have had problems but it hasn't helped. Machine is a Dell 4700C with 3.4 GHz processor , 2 gigs of memory, only keyboard, mouse, and monitor attached in addition to the hard drive.

I've reached the last straw with my attempts to install windows bit onto my PC the story goes as this I needed to upgrade from windows XP bit to Win bit however when I installed my Error from boot Read USB Disk first Win package I didnt realise but it was infact bit so to my annoyance I reformatted back to XP bit I need bit to run several things on my computer such as high end games in the mean time my family told me they wanted windows on their PC so using their PC I created a USB boot disk and used it on my bare-bones PC The one I'd recently reset to XP this brought up my first Disk Read Error Annoyed I tried a few different ways of making a USB boot only to always be brought to the same error deciding to do the family PC first I used the same boot which had brought up an error on MY PC in my families PC and it worked like a charm Not a single issue and Windows bit was installed within the hour USing this new platform I created a -new- USB boot disk thinking that if I made a bit boot off a Disk Read Error from USB boot bit system Disk Read Error from USB boot it would have more luck No it didnt I've tried all sorts of BIOS options but every time it just brings up the same error I attempt to change the bit bootsect exe to a bit one and it didnt bring up the error but then told me files were corrupt I have unfortunatly only got one long answer left I install windows bit again then use that platform to clean install bit windows but I doubt that'll work For the record I KNOW I cannot upgrade from to I WANT to do a CLEAN INSTALL Any help someone a little more learned in this matter could give me would be great Thanks in Advance Helix

A:Disk Read Error from USB boot

I -think-, think being the key word, I have fixed the issue. By opening the boot menu, I fiddled with the USB config changing it to be emulated as a Hard Drive rather than Automatic as well as changing the read speed from Hispeed to fullspeed it has begun to install Win7. I'm not sure -what- I did specifically, just alot of changing options and shere will

SSD's have been known to die without warning and sometimes quick. I suspect that is your problem. You will have to go back to the conventional hard drive until you get the SSD replaced. If its a new SSD it should be covered under warranty.

Hi I resized my System Partition C Drive using GParted and when I boot I get A disk read error occurred Press Ctrl Alt Del to restart I can start the Windows Recovery Console from a CD and run chkdsk from this It shows the correct resized partition size and also reports no errors From the Recovery Console I can see all of my files data So I don t think anything is lost I am not sure how Read Boot/Disk Error Cannot all of this works but I think whatever the BIOS bootstraps before the OS gets loaded has got corrupted in the resize I am not knowledgeable Cannot Boot/Disk Read Error enough to use the correct terms here Could this be the partition table MBR I don t know I have attempted fixmbr fixboot and bootcfg rebuild and I still get the above error Question I am contemplating doing a Windows Repair Installation I know this copies over the Windows files from the CD to the Windows Installation on the Hard Drive This is actually not needed in my case because I don t think there has been any data corruption The question is would this change the partition table MBR enough in order to let me boot If anyone is knowledgeable enough to know how this works please let me know Regards O O

A:Cannot Boot/Disk Read Error

The answer depends on...

a. Where your system partition is located on the hard drive.

b. How many partitions are currently on the hard drive.

c. Where your boot.ini file is currently located.

Can you go to Disk Management...take a screen shot and post it so that we can see what the drive in question looks like?

Why did you resize the syztem partition?

Hello, I got a Lexicon OMEGA USB recording interface with Cubase LE 4 audio software, it wasn't working so I tried a 100% uninstall, I'm not sure if it is 100% gone or not...

I ran checkdisk/error checker on both hard drives. 2nd hard drive worked fine, which I ran 1st.

Then the C: ran & when I checked the properties, now it's using up 130GB of memory from 32-40GB just before the check disk...
Please help/advise.

Should I just simple reformat the C: from windows? How do I do that?

Can I just copy the 32GB of files while looking in the C: over to the 2nd harddrive right in windows....reformat it then move them back over?

Welcome back to the Forum,

Heres my take on the problem. First back up all of your stuff ,as it may be that a hard drive failure is imminent. I hope not, but lets play it safe.
Take this hard drive test and lets find out for sure, but first back up
Test Hard Drive HD Diagnostic or this test Hard Drive Diagnostics Tools and Utilities (Storage) - TACKtech Corp.

Do you hear any strange ticking sounds? If yes, it is most certainly hard drive.

If you pass the hard drive test, the worst is over. It will just take a diagnosis to figure out the cause.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135
Try in clean boot and see if the problem persists

To test the integrity of the system, you can try and SF command.
System Files - SFC Command
If errors are found run three times.

In addition, take the Windows 7 upgrade test. If you have certain hardware issues it will be detected with this test
Run the upgrade advisor to help discover hardware problems

If this is the only HDD in the system and it has your OS on it it should be jumpered as master and hooked up to the end of the IDE cable.

Hi,
my hp dv6443 laptop harddrive was erased by killdisk to get rid of scripts or whatever was causing the sluggish performance. The windows version was Vista home. When trying to reboot from the original disk recovery cd to get the maching working again, the err2err3 displayed at start up. I have read about creating a bootable cd with partition recovery, but have been unable to figure out how to create one. I can drop the free partition builder programs onto a cd, but I don't know how to make it "bootable". But I may be going down the wrong path. Any ideas? Is this problem fixable, or should I just throw the computer away. Thanks!

I just reformatted a dell dimension L866R and changed the windows to xp pro. Since changing the boot order in the BIOS this message will appear. When you press any key the message just keeps repeating itself in a loop.

When you put the windows cd and don't boot from the disk windows will come up. I cannot access the BIOS to try and change the boot order which I think that it might be.

Previously the computer had windows 98SE but the video drivers would be recognized. Decided to upgrade to newer windows version.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

A:Computer Won't Read Hard Drive on Boot-up.

As for the drive not being recognized now, you either don't have the power plug plugged in or the CMOS battery is not plugged in properly. Check you power connections and reset the battery. The computer looks to the Prim SATA channel first to boot off of, so you must have the SATA cable plugged in. You may need to look for a setting under Drives or SATA or something in the Bios that is set for Legacy or IDE not AHCI. Once that is set, the install disc should recognize the drive. If not then you will have to slipstream your SATA drivers for your motherboard into your XP Disc using nLite.

Most likely the CD drive is bad, try the bootable cd in another machine. You can try powering down the laptop, remove / reseat the cd drive, try booting from cd again. If that doesn't help, you can purchase a external cd drive, or get a replacement from Dell.

Hi,

have you used different cables? perhaps this is the problem, I've had drives that won't let you install XP on them, then changed cables, and it's worked! Try putting just the HD in the Primary IDE as Master, with no other drives, also your RAM could be F'd, also the mobo could be f'd, did the guy who sold it to you have a good feedback rating?

A:I ran Bootfix to fix a boot issue, now I'm getting Disk Read Error.

Hi, That error is usually a hardware error.

The first thing I would do is check the hardware. Run the hard drive test.

HP has a memory test and/or hard drive test in the Bios.
Dell F12 when the Dell logo is on the screen press F12 for boot device menu and choose diagnostics.

Other brands run the Seagate drive test.
http://www.seagate.com/support/downloads/seatools/
Page has a Seatools for Dos since windows does not run. That page has a downloadable link for a CDRom ISO that can be burned to run the test.

Before playing around with software it is important at this time to be sure the hard drive is not failing.

Good Luck
Roger

I got an old computer, and my sister still is using it, it had XP but since support ended I decided to go for another system, unfortunetly there were no drivers for Vista and up, so I went for a USB boot - Linux Mint Maya 13 installation. The PC ended up being even slower and a friend just recently showed me how to install the drivers for Windows 8. I decided to go with a USB installation but when I restart and boot from the USB to install Windows 8 Pro, it says: Disk Read Error.
I tested the USB on my new PC that I use and it did boot, but it won't boot from the old one. Is there any solution to this?

A:Disk Read Error while booting from USB Drive

The USB stick is most likely in the wrong format and the PC cant read it. Usually should be formatted as Fat32.

A:Hard Drove Short DST Check: FAILED

Hi, The 24 character error code is a failure of the short Disk Self Test and would indicate that the Hard Drive is failing and needs to be replaced. As your notebook shipped with Windows 10, it is probably still under warranty, so contact HP and arrange to have the drive replaced - If needed, you can check your warranty status Here. If you live in the US, contact HP Here. If you are in another part of the world, start Here. Regards, DP-K
