I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.
I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)
Please install lenovo energy management of windows 7 and then press fn+f5. The one of windows 8 does not work properly.http://download.lenovo.com/consumer/mobiles/cagt24ww.exe

Hello, As stated in the title, I have a Lenovo IdeaPad y580. I purchased it approximately three-and-a-half years ago, and only now is it really beginning to chug durings its processes. Point is, I want it to last perhaps another half year or so while I finish saving up for another computer. As a gamer, I'm fine with the limitations of the GPU, but sometimes my laptop legitimately has issues processing stuff, such as loading Google Chrome properly. I know enough about Windows to clean out viral matter and uninstall programs that I don't use that are running in the back. But does anyone have any tips or tricks to make this hunk of junk last maybe six more months before it becomes unusable?TL;DR I need to make my laptop run at least a reasonably sub-average to average level for six more months. Any tips are appreciated.https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-P-Y-and-Z-series/I-have-a-Lenovo-IdeaPad-y580-and-I-want-it-to-last-as-long-as/td-p/3325637
Hello! I'm hoping someone here might be able to help me. I'm running on Windows 8.1. Tonight, certain keys on my keyboard stopped working. These are the: 5, 6, F1, F2, +/=, -/_, home and end keys. The touchsceen keyboard still works, and an extenal keyboard plugged in also works. I have already tried uninstalling the driver and there are no updates available. Prior to this happening, I did have a brief glitch where the number 6 kept slipping in randomly while I typed. I assumed it to be stuck, but, well...now it isn't working at all. Could it be a physical issue with the keyboard? These are pretty random keys to go out all at once. Thanks very much!https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-U-and-S-Series-Notebooks/Ideapad-u410-touch-certain-keys-not-working/td-p/3339291

Welcome to Lenovo Forums.
Does this problem occur on external keyboards? If doesn't, then there is a good chance that you would to get a new keyboard. Or try to reseat the keyboard connector or maybe clean it with some cotton buds to see whether that helps.
Click on Start --> Control Panel --> Ease of Access --> Ease of Access Center
Click on "Change how your keyboard works" --> Under Control the mouse with the Keyboard
Uncheck the check box "Turn ON Mouse Keys" --> Click on OK.

My original HD is going bad so I decided to buy a new HD and an mSATA SSD. I've read more forums and watched more videos then I would have liked and I still can't find anything that can walk me through this. I want my mSATA to be configured like my original HD with a C: and D: partition and it to be able to run one button recovery and everything else that the original HD was able to do. Then I want the replacement disk HD to be just for storage. My computer did not come with an mSATA originally. It does have Intel Rapid Storage Technology but I can not find RapidTool.exe which some of the forums say is needed.

If your old HD is still operating, you should be able to clone it using the steps shown below. Be warned that you must clone the whole drive, including all the hidden partitions, and can only resize the Windows Partition or the OKR recovery will not work, so the new m.2 SSD must be large enough to hold the entire contents of all the partitions of your existing HD drive. Use Windows Drive Manager to view the sizes of the other parititons on your HD> If you need to make room, back up all your data and then delete from the current OS drive partition before cloning. http://www.laptopmag.com/articles/install-m2-ssd-lenovo-t440s Read this thread as well, it points out some important rules that must be followed when cloning so thaat OKR will work afterwards.https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-P-Y-and-Z-series/Enable-onekey-recovery-after-HDD-to-SSD-cloning... Hey everyone nbsp I have a question regarding my Ideapad Y and a strange sound error I have been experiencing over the past few months Ideapad out Y580 cutting sound nbsp Windows Pro w Media Centeri QM GB RAMGTX Ideapad Y580 sound cutting out M GB Samsung EVO nbsp Ok here's the sound issue nbsp After using a program such as Minecraft VLC Nightingale the sound will completely cut out nbsp When checking volumes sound will not register nbsp Oftentimes the sound control panel will say the device is busy Ideapad Y580 sound cutting out nbsp Things I've tried so far Disabled Realtek Digital Output Installed latest driver Checked current processes for remnants of programs using the sound card nothing nbsp Sometimes when I have one of the programs open for example playing minecraft when I start a video in VLC there will be no sound nbsp The only sound comes from the game nbsp The only thing that really restores the audio is a full restart of the system nbsp Logging out and back in will not restore the sound Has anyone experienced this issue nbsp Is there a way to fix this problem nbsp Thanks guys
One suggestion..... have you tried uninstalling the audio driver, reboot the computer and then install a fresh copy of the driver. Does anyone actually know if the "Dust Removal" in the energy management program actually works to remove dust from the laptop? I'm a bit reluctant to open up and dissect my laptop to check for any dust accumulation at this point, since everything has been running fine. This question came to mind since I saw that the filter at the bottom of my laptop was kinda caked in fine dust - wondered if the same was inside my laptop. I got the laptop in December 2012.

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
That application can only minimized collection of dust in the Exhaust system of your Laptop.
Since the process of the vents is to get air fom the outside to pass through the heatsink . Dust collection cannot really be avoided.
One symptom of a fan and vent dust is that when the vents blow very hot and minimal air and the laptop is heating up more than usual.
A yearly cleaning would be ok.
You can refer to the Maintenance Manual of this model on how to open the cover and get to the heat sink.
You might also want to refresh and apply new Thermal paste to the Heat sink.
Just be careful on the plastic parts and also wear an anti static starp. If you're not comfortable doing this, You can opt to have a repair center do this.

Not sure what has happened but none of my F function keys are working. I am running XP home on a dell 8400 dimension. Looking for help. gary
First thing to try would be upgrading your keyboard drivers. If not, what make and model is your laptop? It may have an F-Lock function that has somehow turned on and needs to be disabled.
I have a Toshiba Satellite P75-A7200 with windows 8, and none of the function keys are working, although they used to work. Windows 8 does not have flash cards, nor is there a keyboard option on computer settings. Any ideas?
See if this setting makes a difference:
Reversing Function keys on P75-A7200 Windows 8 - TOSHIBA FORUMS
My top row of keys (function) seem to have either stopped working or changed function. Volume keys (F7 - F9) do not work. Brightness keys (F4 - F5) do not operate brightness but bring up the internet search box and page function, battery key (F3) moves cursor to Find field, Wi-Fi on/off (F2) and Screen selection (F1) appears to do nothing. F10 - F12 keys move the cursor around the screen and opens up a toolbar.
All other keys on the top row (other than Function) appear ok.
Should have added Inspiron 1564 Windows & and IE9. It is not the actual function keys but the HOT keys.http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3518/t/19454482
This is an ASUS Netbook with AMD processor running Win 7. It has ran fine for a long time. I connectyed to a unsecured network and since the I have lost the use of my function keys. I can no longer disable the keypad, adjust volume, Mute, and everything else that used to work with the function key. The "hour glass" icon is always present by the nav cursor like something is downloading.
Anybody got a clue?
Did you try going to the Asus support site and reinstalling the function keys drivers? Posting the complete model would also help.
My backlight function keys don't always work More often than not they don't work they simply do nothing Moreover if I try to manually change a setting in the power options it doesn't change anything nbsp I contacted HP via the online chat support but they were less than helpful The chat support agent I talked to clearly didn't working not keys Dim function know what they were doing They suggested I reinstall all the ACPI drivers update BIOS and update my video card driver My ACPI drivers are all reinstalled recently and really only one of them should matter the BIOS was updated a week ago and my video card drivers are up to date according to device manager nbsp The worst part of my experience is yet to come The technician doubted my information and didn't want to trust that I knew what I was talking about because they wanted me to open up things like msinfo and check my BIOS was up-to-date Is it too much that I know something I'm currently in a CS major so I know what I'm doing nbsp They finally suggested I reformat the laptop I have an HP Envy I don't want to reformat and I don't know what else exactly to do This isn't the first time chat support has been unsatisfactory but I know the keys sometimes work suggesting the keys aren't broken and the software isn't completely messed up either I am sure I don't need to reformat so here I am asking for some help nbsp Thanks
The online chat seems doing right by checking video driver, ACPI and BIOS.If one of those components was not right, the brightness control (fn+f7/f8) will not function properly. Since they dont know what you or other software have done, the easy way is to recommend you to do HP system recovery.HP system Recovery with factory installed feature will determine either you have software or hardware issue easily. If the recovery dont help then 100% you have hardware issue. My suggestion is to follow what HP support steps.http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Video-Display-and-Touch/Dim-function-keys-not-working/td-p/351804

I recently bought a second hand sony vaio ne20e notebook which is less than 2 year old .I have found that the Fn keys do not work and have tried fixing this with the relevant driver updates to no effect .
I have put the problem to sony support and they have raised a further problem .The notebook is running vista ultimate 32 bit but ,according to the serial no.,sony says it was sold with a vista ultimate business operating system .Becauseof this they are unable to help further.
I would really like to remove vista ultimate and replace it with vista home premium .This os is running perfectly on my other sony laptop .Can you advise if this is feasible and ,if so , how do I go about it ?
Alternatively will any of the "repair ,boot and recover discs " help with this fault ?
If the laptop has a recovery partition, you can revert the OS back to the factory default OS. Or, the laptop may come with Recovery disks. You can also buy the Recovery disks from the manufacturer sometimes.
I've been using this laptop for around a year or so now and it's Keyboard Lenovo Issue Ideapad - Y580 worked perfectly up until this point in time nbsp nbsp The issue that I'm currently having is entirely mechanical At the moment my keyboard is intact and works just fine However if I press a key mainly the 'e' key off-center it pops the entire key up and I have to click it into place It's not life-threatening or crucial to the machine's function but when I am busy typing papers or lesson plans having a key Lenovo Ideapad Y580 - Keyboard Issue on the most constantly used vowel key continually pop up really puts a dampener in things nbsp I've taken the key out and have tried to click it back in While I can't see what's going on given that there's Lenovo Ideapad Y580 - Keyboard Issue a key in the way I can most certainly feel it clicking into place twice both clicks stemming from the right side of the 'e' key It seems that to the best of my knowledge only two out of four prongs that are meant to keep the key in place and in line are actually snapping and holding the key down Whenever I type off-center and to the right the entire left side of the key snaps up and must be pushed back into place nbsp I'm wondering if there's anything I can or should do Given that I've had my machine for over a year now I'm unsure if my warranty still covers it speaking of is there a way to check warranty status online nbsp Please if anyone has any advice on how to fix or replace a busted key keyboard please let me know
A replacement keyboard (chicony, oki, or dafon are the makers - be sure to look for the manufacturer label and p/n right below the lenovo p/n on the back to get a genuine keyboard) would make a good spares, they are about $30 on ebay. I replaced a broken key on a few different laptops but much prefer to swap out the entire keyboard. Once a single key goes bad it's likely that more keys will start to fail (note that 'e' is perhaps the most commonly used key on your keyboard because it's the most popular vowel. Other popular keys like 't' might be failing sometime soon). So I would suggest you buy a spare keyboard and save it until you can't live without it, the procedure to replace the keyboard is a 10 minute swap. If you want to replace a key, a sharp tipped (xacto-style) knife blade, and a loupe (magnifying lens) are important accessories. Buy from a reputable site which has good instructions ( http://www.laptopkey.com/ ). Unfortunately, the key and hinge are manufacturer-specific (OKI, Chicony, Dafon, see above) so you will need to determine it from the guide on www.laptopkey.com. When I fixed our Acer c720 I also used needlenose pliers to bend a metal tab back into place, the key hinge wasn't seating correctly because the metal tab had bent and was open too wide. The Acer c720 has a nightmare keyboard to replace with 75 different locking plastic tabs that bind it to the undersize of the palmrest, so i had little choice but to replace the single key or buy an entire keyboard/palmrest assembly. Thinkpad T-series keyboards are like the hood of a car, just pop 2-4 screws and push towards the LCD, then it pivots open like a hood and you can remove the connectors and install a new one's connectors and screw it down in 5-10 mins. The 2-4 screws to remove often have a little picture of a keyboard on the back of the laptop or search for "Lenovo Y580 Hardware Maintenance Manual" and download the instructions for all the repairs to your laptop.https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-P-Y-and-Z-series/Lenovo-Ideapad-Y580-Keyboard-Issue/td-p/1589914

I have a Asus Eee 900ha and have installed windows 7 32 x86 and increased total RAM to 2gb. Since installing Windows 7 my Fn keys do not work apart from F3 and F4 to change screen brightness.
Can anyone tell me what i need to do to get the Fn keys working again, ie. volume up/dowm, mute, numlk, zz, wireless etc.
I just built a new computer and installed a new Microsoft keyboard and mouse. Everything works except the function keys. They give no response at all on this computer but on my old computer they work fine and my old keyboard works good on the new computer.
I like the new keyboard better than the older one so want to use it.
Would there be drivers or something else needed to get this keyboard to work on the new computer?
I have a fairly new Thinkpad T440p with Windows 7. My Problem is that some of the Fn-Keys do not work. Working:Mute (F1)Volume down/up (F2/F3)Brightness down/up (F5/F6)Fn-Lock (Esc) Not working:Disable/Enable Microphone (F4) also the LED doesnt turn onEnable/Disable Wifi (F8)and all the other Fn keys (F7, F9, F10, F11, F12)... cant be sure about their functions since its not really documented I have the Lenovo System Update installed and all the packages installed. The laptop came without Windows etc (because I am provided windows by my university and wanted to save money) so I installed it by myself. The other buttons arent essential but I would be happy to use them. Any help is appreciated.

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
I?m sorry to hear that a few function keys of your Lenovo ThinkPad T440p is not working properly.
First of all, try reinstalling the hotkey integration features and power management driver.
Check if the keys are working in different applications. Some keys such as the function keys F1 through F12 will not work with every program. An easy way to test this is to open notepad or other word processing program and trying the key. Try getting into safe mode and see if the keys work. Remove the key from the keyboard and clean it. In some situations dirt, hair, dust, etc. can obstruct keys causing them not to work.
Please try to get into BIOS mode and see if the keyboard is working there.
1. If you are able to use the keyboard in BIOS, it could be a software issue. I would recommend in that case to do a System Restore which will revert the settings in your system to a previous time.
2. If keyboard doesn?t respond in BIOS as well, I strongly suggest you to contact our technical support for assistance.
Click here to open a link where you can select the country and get the exact contact support number. I?m sure they will be a great help.

I just purchased the L50, but the function key didn't work. I tried to restart, re-install the utilities but it didn't help.
I couldn't find the "restart flash card" also. Can anybody help?
Every new notebook with preinstalled original recovery image (operating system) has preinstalled right drivers, tools and utilities so I?m really wondering you cannot use function keys.
Have you noticed some problem with certain keys or with al F keys?
You can try to fix it installing Toshiba system driver and Toshiba function key utility but my opinion is that you should, if possible, reinstall OS using HDD recovery option. After doing this notebook will have ?factory settings? again and everything should be OK again.
I have installed the Middleton Bios third party bios and was wondering if anyone came accross the same problem.
I have installed it because I will be installing the 2.6 processor, and installing 8gigs of ram in my (i guess) Frankenpad.
here is what is going on;....
*thinklight does not work Fn+Pgup
*seems like none of the combinations using the Fn key are operatable.
* Ctrl/Alt/Delete does not work either.
Does anyone else have these problems, and if so, what to do?
I checked all my drivers, seems to be ok and up to date.
What Lenovo drivers control the function keys, or key combos?
I may have to go back to the Lenovo Bios.
any help would be appriciated.

I've installed the middleton bios over 200 times and never had any problems like this, but I'm wondering if you installed the version with Fn/Ctrl swap which is designed to change the functions of these keys. Try using the Ctrl key instead of the Fn key, if that works then the only problem is that you installed the wrong middleton bios. It is distributed with both versions. Considering that all the problems you list include using either the Fn or Ctrl key, I'd say this is your likely your problem.

I have one version of the "Energy Management" application that uses "80" for "nn", whereas the current version of the app uses "60" for "nn". So the value of "65" is not out of step with these values. I cannot offer you any advice to extricate yourself from the bad place where you now find yourself. Please help with a keyboard problem on my desktop PC....
I have windows 7. I just discovered that some of the function keys on my generic dell usb keyboard (which doesn't have an F lock button) doesn't work. I say some because I only use some of them
F1 - it just beeps every time i hit it
F2 - it just beeps every time i hit it
F5 - it brings up my unikeynt program in the front
F3 - it just beeps every time i hit it
HOWEVER, F11 key does work, toggling between normal and full screen
I tried switching to another generic usb keyboard and have the same problem, so it's probably not keyboard related. I tried the same function keys within MS excel, and they do work as they are intended.
The function keys worked this morning and nothing was installed since then.
I installed a fresh copy of Windows 7 64bit on an ASUS X50IJ laptop.
Some of the function keys for volume and WiFi (F2, F10, F11, F12, etc) don't work at all while screen brightness keys do.
I cannot seem to get them to work no matter what I do, I would appreciate any help, thank you

The function keys on my keyboards are working in the opposite manner. Whenever I press any of the keys from F1 to F12 they perform the multimedia actions or their enhanced action. For example, if I press the F2 key the brightness of my laptop screen would lower. It should not work like this. I should be pressing Fn+F2 for the brightness of my screen to lower. The problem here is that I can't use Alt+F4 to close windows because its reversed, I instead have to press Alf+Fn+F4. I have already search for an answer online and I can only find that NumLock is supposed to be locked. But, it's a laptop - I have no such key. Looking for alternatives if anyone has found a solution. Thank you in advance.
You Can disable the functionality by disabling "Action Keys Mode" in the BIOS...Here is the document, that will help you with it... http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c02035108http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Hardware-and-Upgrade-Questions/Function-keys-working-in-reverse-G62224CA/td-p/297642
I am a member of the sevenforums and currently have a win8 laptop so thought I'd sign up here (seems to be the same people behind both forums).
I'm having a little trouble and would really appreciate some feedback.
My Lenovo ideapad z500 had 2 keys (K and I) that stopped working (they worked on the touchscreen) and then after that the delete, 8, and arrow keys topped working. Not sure why.
Before I get the keyboard replaced I'm wondering if it could be something else? There's no water damage and I haven't dropped it so I'm confused. I was told it has to be water damage but maybe 1 drop from the condensation on a glass of water is all I can think that may have affected it.
Would be great for some input on this issue.
I was told it has to be water damage
Not true. In fact, water in the keyboard normally does not cause permanent damage. That is, once the water dries, all works again - most of the time. But that does depend on many variables - type of keyboard membrane, how much water, if just water (no sugars or cream, for example), and how much dust, dirt, oily hair/dander, cigarette smoke, cookie crumbs, etc. are under the keys when the water was spilled. The greater damage generally comes when the water works it way through the keyboard and into the computer's electronics.
I would try a regular PC keyboard first to see what happens. If all the keys work properly with a standard USB keyboard, then you can be pretty certain it is the notebook keyboard at fault, and not something more serious.
after a fresh install of windows xp on this sony vaio laptop the Fn keys to enable video output to an external video source seems to be dis-abled, anyone know where i can get the software to put back into windows? i have been to look for drivers but all i see is the sony dll utility driver and the service driver of some sort still no Fn keys seem to work

The Fn buttons are controlled by Flash Card Support Utility?
This Flash Card Support Utility can be found under All Programs -> Toshiba

then check with the function keys, and check wiht F8 key also, if it works then problem lies with the OS
Hello, Good morning/ evening ...
I'm using ( Satellite U920T) and recently upgraded my tablet to Windows 10
but after that, the function keys, volume, brightness, FN key, and even the backlight doesn't work anymore !!
I have tried to recover the system and to update driver's software but nothing worked ..
I use these keys all the time and now it's really hard without them !!
What's the problem? what should I do?
The problem is that Satellite U920T isn’t listed as Win 10 supported unit and therefore the Win 10 Toshiba drivers and software which controls the FN keys isn’t released.
But as far as I know to use the FN keys, the Toshiba System driver as well as Flash Card Support Utility must be installed.
For all Toshiba Win 10 supported units, the drivers can be downloaded from this page:
Maybe you could try the drivers released for other Win 10 supported notebook models…
I’m not quite sure if the software will be fully compatible with your U920T model but its definitely worth a try…

I've seen some keyboards (not sure with laptops) that have a way to turn on/off the F keys with a key combination. You might want to check your laptop documentation and see if that is the case.http://www.sevenforums.com/hardware-devices/240456-default-function-keys-not-working-hp-pavilion-tx2500z.html
I currently am trying to get my Sony drivers all installed onto my computer after formatting it. Normally, I wouldn't think I'd run into an issue with simply installing drivers, but it appears to do nothing for me after installing and re-installing tons of drivers off of Sony's website. I have a Sony Vaio VPCSC41FM laptop. Just hoping to see if anyone else has run into this issue and has resolved it, as I've spent days working on this to no further extent of accomplishment.
Your problem may be that you have to press the "fn" key plus the function key, some manufacturers do this. So to make the F1 work for example, you press and hold the "fn" key, and press the F1 key.
On my computer (its not a Sony), I have to go into the "bios" and change the "Action Keys Mode" to "Enabled". This may be different on your computer.
Best of luck!
Have a great day!
My special function keys regularly stop working. For example, I often press the 2nd and 3rd function buttons to adjust the brightness of the display and nothing happens. In order to restore function, I need to open Toshiba System Settings/Function Key. I do not need to do anything further, not even the Apply or OK buttons. When I then close System Settings the special function keys work correctly again.
Whilst this work-around corrects things temporarily, I feel that I should not need to go through this procedure every time I use the computer. Does anyone know of a permanent solution, please?
It has occurred to me that this problem may have arisen because something in the 'start up' list has been disabled. If so, I can easily enable it, but I'm afraid I have no idea what to look for.
I'd be grateful for any advice.
I've recently had to reset my laptop which, in so doing, removed the original Toshiba software and drivers that was packaged with the laptop.
The majority of the original software and drivers have been re-installed from the Drivers download page.
My main issue is with the Function Keys where some Fn combinations are not working, in particular the Mute/Unmute, and the Wifi toggle buttons.
These are the only two that seem to be non-functional.
If installing the Toshiba Function Key Utility from the link above, it would install version 184.108.40.206, however the Toshiba Service Station updates this to 220.127.116.11. Neither versions resolve the issue.
Am I missing something, downloading the wrong thing? What's the fix?
Short Model No: PSPVJE
Operating on Windows 10
I've recently reset my laptop and as such needed to re-install the original Toshiba software and drivers.
The Toshiba Function Key Utility from the Driver Download page is at version 18.104.22.168, but the Toshiba Service Software updates this to 22.214.171.124. However, neither version results my issue, which is that the buttons for mute/unmute and wifi toggle do not work.
The short model number is PSPVJE, and I'm running windows 10.
Any solutions for this?
I'm new on Toshiba forum and I just want to ask you what should I install and adjust on my laptop Toshiba Satellite L300D-14S to once again to use function buttons like in enclose picture.
I want to remark you also, that I have upgrade my laptop (two days ago) from Windows Vista Home Premium (32 bit) to Windows 7 Starter OS and now my function key are not functional.

However, these functions still do not work. They were working fine about a week ago so I am wondering if the latest Windows update has something to do with this?

That's entirely possible I guess. Have you tried updating any drivers for any of the hardware affected? Medion's download page is here , you might want to check MEDION UK - Downloads
Brightness key ( F2 and F3) key stopped working suddenlyI am using the HP 15-af114AU Notebook (AMD A8 Processor) . Operating on Windows 10 -64 bit Its been just 2 weeks I bought. Hi, Try the following. Download the AMD HD Graphics installer on the following link and save it to your Downloads folder. http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp74501-75000/sp74716.exe When done, open your Downloads folder, right click the AMD Graphics installer and select 'Run as Administrator' to start the installation. When this has completed, shutdown the notebook. Unplug the AC Adapter and then remove the battery. Hold down the Power button for 30 seconds. Re-insert the battery and plug in the AC Adapter. Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to launch the Start-up Menu and then select f10 to enter the bios menu. Press f9 to load the defaults ( this is sometimes f5, but the menu at the bottom will show the correct key ), use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter. Press f10 to save the setting and again use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter. Start the notebook and let Windows fully load for a few minutes before checking. Hello all, my function keys have stopped working completely. I tried following the keyboard troubleshooting guide where it says to look for a HOT KEYS driver on hp.com, the problem is that this driver is not avaible for my device. Also, I tried googling it and download this hot keys driver for windows 10 and when I try to install it, it just says it's not compatible with my device. I want to be able to use the function keys as traditional function keys for my WordPerfect word processing program, ie F7 is exit and save, F4 is indent, etc. The function keys are now hotkeys. Is there any way I can turn off the hotkey features of the F1-F12 function keys?http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Operating-System-and-Recovery/disable-hot-keys-on-function-keys/td-p/5629340
Is there a way to completely disable the HotKey setting? I always need access to my F1-F12 keys without having to hit the function button first. I know how to go into settings and turn on the F1-F12 function, but I was wondering if there is a way to disable the HotKeys altogether. Every time I shutdown or restart my computer, the F1-F12 setting automatically goes back to the HotKey setting, thus, causing me to go in and change it every time. Y580, Win10 I just purchased a used Y580 cheap because it has non-functional USB 3.0 ports. The USB 2.0 port works fine. When I plug in a USB cable, it doesn't register anything, as if there's no power to the ports. Which leads me to believe it's not a driver issue...but I could be wrong about that. My thought was that the controller on the motherboard might be bad, but I don't know much about laptops, honestly. I'm more of a desktop guy when it comes to hardware. I'm not even sure if the USB controller is onboard or a separate board in the laptop. Any ideas on how to fix this, or am I just out of luck? My front left USB 3.0 ports stopped working a few days ago. They can still provide power via a USB to Micro USB adapter cable, but will not recognise or power my mouse or headset. My device manager indicates that my Intel(r) USB 3.0 Extensible host controller cannot start (code 10). I've tried reinstalling this driver, but that didn't sovle the problem. My rear right USB 2.0 port functions regularly. My front right USB 3.0 port does not work because it has been physically damaged. I'd really like to have at least 2 functional USB ports to work with. I've seen a lot of people ask the opposite and I tried the solutions given to them in hopes of helping with my problem but they don;'t work. Basically, I want to be able to use the functions of the F1-F12 keys by pressing the Fn key like in other laptops so that I could use the F# keys for something else. I play games on emulators, you see, and the F1-12 keys are for quicksaves (by shift + F1-12 and just pressing the F1-12 to load) which I couldn't use because pressing the F1-12 keys right now would just make them use their functions instead of letting me save my game and it's kind of a problem for me. Can anyone help? The laptop I have is new and I dunno much of how to change stuff. I tried looking in the control panel and everything but there's nothing. Please help?https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-IdeaPad-100-305-500-Edge/How-to-enable-Fn-F-keys-on-Lenovo-Ideapad-110/td-p/3481770
I accidentally spilled a little bit of soda on my keyboard a few days ago, and now I've got some lovely sticky keys that are driving me bonkers. I know in most keyboard, you can just pull keys out, then click them back in after cleaning them. But I have no idea on this model, because I am aware that sometimes keys cannot be put back on some keyboards. So before I start pulling away, I want to make sure. I have looked all over the place and cannot find a simple answer. - - I just need a yes/no.
Hi Eliatrope ,
Welcome to the Community Forums.
Technically Z580 keys are removable so it is a yes.
Keyboard specification and here ( page 28 ):
Full-size keyboard, 6-row, multimedia Fn keys, recovery key6 Row QWERTY (Standard) Full Keyboard
FRU list page 94 - 121 as sample part
Hardware manual don't offer specific key removal guide as entire board is replaced but some party would offer individual key repair such as here and here .
Take time to review the highlighted links first and as usual technician practice , to try it with one NON commonly used key .
Hope this help answer your query.
I was doing some tech support for my mom regarding screen captures and discovered the print screen key and eventually the F key as well is not working on an otherwise fully functional keyboard nbsp The laptop in question is a Yoga running Windows Yes it survived the forced Windows update era nbsp It will be needed tomorrow so I didn't want to do anything drastic just yet I've rebooted the dead F12 Yoga and - (IdeaPad) keys 13 PrintScreen computer and cleaned the keyboard as much as possible those chiclet style keys don't pop off the way old style keys did so cleaning under them is problematic nbsp No effect nbsp I've found workarounds for all of the features assigned to these keys - the onscreen keyboard handles the normal F and PrintScreen functions and Power Options allows for brightness adjustments independent of the F 's special function which is Yoga 13 (IdeaPad) - dead F12 and PrintScreen keys good because I cranked the brightness way down testing the keyboard - F works just fine but we'd rather not have to deal with these solutions long term nbsp We had the keyboard replaced at a reputable computer repair shop a while back - I'll be getting in touch with the proprietor there tomorrow and I've already made a post on TechSupportForum nbsp I'll keep you posted on what I try based on their advicehttps://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-Yoga-Series-Notebooks/Yoga-13-IdeaPad-dead-F12-and-PrintScreen-keys/td-p/3438694
Not sure how to explain this abstractly, so I will give an example. If I press the F12 key by itself, it turns off the wireless connection. If I want to actually input "F12," I have to enter fn-F12. What's the procedure for reversing this? I.e., I want to have to enter fn-F12 to turn off the wireless, etc. Isn't there a way to do this in the control panel of Windows 8?
It probably depends on the make of computer (presumably a laptop?).
There may be a utility provided by the laptop manufacturer, or you may need to get into the machine's BIOS or UEFI settings to change it.
Why have the function keys been disabled in Windows 7? I know from other threads and tutorials thatthere are ways of getting atthe functions (though not if your laptop is on the old side - my Toshiba Portege can't access the option to show both a display on its screen and a video projector for example). But even a simple things like rename and help, which many programs access via F2 and F1, now don't work.
Seems silly to disable these useful functions.
They aren't "disabled", you need to install the drivers for your laptop that tell windows what the function keys do.http://www.sevenforums.com/general-discussion/62335-function-keys-again.html
I struggle to get the function keys to work. They work the normal way, but not when i try to use the Fn+F1-F12.Anyone got tip on how to fix? It is a new computer.
frikstad Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums!I read your post about problems with the Function keys and wanted to help.Since this is a relatively new machine, instead of struggling for hours to fix it yourself, why not just let HP fix it -- for free!! You should contact HP Customer Support directly to have them put you in touch with HP Technical Support to see what they can do about diagnosing and repairing your machine remotely.I did this recently and the HP Tech was able to remotely access my PC from the Internet and do the needed repairs. If you live in the US or Canada, contact information is on this page: http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/phone-assist.html#section1If you live elsewhere, contact information is on this page: http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/ww-contact-us.htmlNOTE: After you get through, stay on the line until you are finally able to talk to some one -- it can take a while!Good Luck========================================================================I am a volunteer and I do not work for, nor do I represent, HP.---------------------------------------------------------------Please click "Accept As Solution" on the post that solves your issue to help others find the solution. Please click the Thumbs-Up symbol on the left of the Reply button to say thanks fopr my help.========================================================================http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Software-and-How-To-Questions/Function-keys-Fn/td-p/5589499

hi, welcome to TSF
it could be a combination with the numlock key and shift key or the fn key. or it could just be the numlock key itself. you can go here and get the user manual it should tell you how to use the keyboard.
Download a User Manual - Toshiba

I have the Microsoft 1000 keyboard. Where can I find a diagram of the function keys and their use?https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/9d511de9-44b6-45b3-91e6-e50d3a2bdca0/function-keys?forum=w7itproappcompat
I have been trying Windows 7 on my laptop and when I tried using it with a video projector, while it worked, I was unable to get the Function F5 key to work - the one that toggles the display between laptop screen/external screen or both. All I could get was the video projector image and a black screen on the laptop.
Is this a W7 quirk or my laptop? It worked OK with XP. I see similar problems reported elsewhere on this forum but this is slightly different.
The laptop is a Toshiba Portege.
Hi sigurd, welcome to sevenforums - the place to be,
have you looked at this tutorial?
I want the F3 key to search for the next occurrence of text. I want the F5 key to refresh a page, WITHOUT having to hold down any other keys. How do I reprogram these keys to act like every other computer I've owned? (Yes, I've tried the BIOS routine, but all that does it make the F3 key adjust my brightness sans pressing the 'fn' key at the same time. )http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Hardware-and-Upgrade-Questions/function-keys-not-doing-what-I-want/td-p/5796456
Ok, so I decided to assign F11 to open an application that I use frequently. One of our people wrote a little program for hot keys that uses F11 as the 'enable/disable' toggle. So I changed the shortcut back to none in the properties dialog and F11 still tries to open the afore-mentioned application. Is there somewhere else other than rt-click-properties-shortcut key that I need to change it so that I can have the nifty hotkeys too? Or do I just need to have the creator assign a different enable key for mine?
Hello!Function keys fn+F3/F4 (display scrren 1 or 2/ both screens...)/F5/F6 (light) doesn't work. However fn+F1/F8/F9 (sleep and sound) work. Please help.

My only problem now is if I want to turn Wi-Fi on, FN-f8 does nothing, but just pressing the wifi light turns it on just fine. Im not sure what the others are meant to do,but they dont seem to do what is expected.
Does this mean I have an alternate setting for function keys?
There is probably a utility from Toshiba that needs to be installed, along with these,
Two VGA graphics adapters installed?
I just got a Dell Inspiron 1545 with Windows 7. The book that came with it talks about Windows Vista. I've tried pressing the "Fn" key then the F(1,2..) key. The F(1,2..) key , then the "Fn" key. No matter what... nothing happens. What am I doing wrong. When Best Buy was "optimizing" it, did they mess something up? Help?
Do you have another keyboard that you can plug into that laptop? Doing that will let you pare down the possibilities.http://www.sevenforums.com/general-discussion/63974-cant-use-function-keys.html
Would someone tell me what the function keys on the keyboard are? just cant figure them out. Thanks,Sandavis
The Function (Fn) keys are used for various things such as changing displays, turning the keyboard backlight off/on, enabling numlock etc. What model do you have so that I can be more specific?http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Hardware-and-Upgrade-Questions/function-keys/td-p/72044

anyone got a link or a list of what all the fuction keys do when you boot up. Thanks
I just switched from Mac OS to Windows 8, and one of my biggest problems have been the function keys (F1-F12). On a mac, you could have the OS features "hidden" behind Fn, which enabled me to use function keys as shortcuts when using a software or playing. With Windows 8, the OS function keys commands go above a software's shortcut commands. So you can't press F5 for refresh and so forth.
After a lot of googling, it seemed it's impossible to switch Windows 8's features such as second screen (f10) off, or have them behind a Fn+F10 type commands.
I've tried already to achieve this with autohotkey but even with administrative rights etc, Windows 8 won't let me bypass or override the OS function keys features.
Please, could anyone help me? This is actually the main reason in considering to sell my brand new Lenovo laptop (which I like) and switch back to Apple.
did you try keytweak?http://www.eightforums.com/general-support/21572-how-disable-function-keys.html
Good morning I have the hp pavilion x2 10-n101nv , the F keys function as the selection key functions ie sation light increase light and on but if I press the fn becoming F1 F2 F3 f4, how do I change
Hi, You can change the default action as follows. Shut down the notebook. Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to enter the Start-up Menu. Select the Bios option ( f10 ), then make the change shown in the document on the following link. http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=emr_na-c02035108&DocLang=en&docLocale=en_US&... I ve searched and searched and I haven t found a yes or no answer to this question It seems that nearly every site I visit thes days wants Keys? Programming Function me to register with them before I can access the information I m looking Programming Function Keys? for This is a serious pain in the butt when I just want to see if the site even has the information or program that I need And it seems that every one of them wants you to type your e-mail address at least twice So here s the question - is it possible to program a certain key combination to insert the e-mail address for me For instance ti would be so much simpler and less time consuming to simply press Ctrl F to insert my e-mail address rather than typing it out several times and then having to make sure there are no typos in any of the duplications I don t always tupe so giid
My solution to this-open Notepad. Type your email address, save the notepad file to your desktop.
When you are asked for your email address, open the file, copy then paste the address.
I'm having a problem getting the "fn+f1" key combination to work in a program. One of the solutions their forum offered was to check my bios setup to lock and/or unlock my fn key. As far as I can tell, this setting is not in my bios setup control panel. I'm not sure, but from reading through these forums, it appears that this setting may be something common to laptops but not desktops. When I tried to simply test whether or not my function keys worked without the fn key, I also noticed that f2 is marked as the "sleepmode" button, but f3 actually starts sleep mode (without pressing the fn key), while f2 doesn't appear to do anything. Is there someplace I can check/change my fn and f1-f12 settings?
Hi, Your mahine is a desktop and you are using external keyboard. I use external keyboard for my laptops all the times (well almost) and depending on what is your keyboard you don't need fn key to use F1 to F12. Please use Fn key (it should have different color) with the same color symbol. F1 is normally for Help, what is other symbol and color of the other on that key ? Hey guys My laptop is a pretty good laptop with a proper nvidia graphics card an i cpu and even gb of ram Even having a inch full HD screen making it amazing for games Even GTA V for Reversing keys function the Pc runs pretty well on this powerful laptop All of those things make this an amazing gaming Reversing the function keys PC however it has one draw back that makes it almost impossible to play a game with a good steady flow This one fatal gaming flaw is in fact the keyboard but to be specific it is the function keys The HP Envy has both F - F Reversing the function keys and the insert key However these are the secondary keys The primary keys are system keys which change the brightness or the volume What this means is if I want to use F in a game I have to hold the function key then press F This sounds minor but when playing games it can be annoying having to hold down a function key just to use one of the F keys Dies anyone know of a way to get this fixed and reverse it that way if I want to mute my laptop I have to press function and then the F I hope people know what I mean and please if you do know a fix that would be great if you could post it bellow Thanks Connor Burnett Solved View Solution
Hi, Yes, I've been using F1-F12 keys daily for the last 35 years or so but luckily I always use external keyboards when using laptops (on or off docking stations). You may not be able to swap but disable. Please use the following article: http://support.hp.com/au-en/document/c02035108 Regards.http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Hardware-and-Upgrade-Questions/Reversing-the-function-keys/td-p/4983756
Anyone know of a way to set the function keys to something specific. Either in the registry or with a script?
Dear Lenovo, How can I have both Esc and function keys work normally in Yoga 700? That is, as in any normal computer keyboard where Esc is Esc, and F1 is F1, etc. If I set 'hot key' mode in bios then Esc is normal, but function keys act as hot keys.If I set 'function key' mode in bios then function keys are normal, but Esc is paper display toggle. I don't think it's too much to ask. Best regards.https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-Yoga-Series-Notebooks/Yoga-700-esc-and-function-keys/td-p/3331414
