Unable to switch user accounts in Windows 7

Q: Unable to switch user accounts in Windows 7

I am assisting a coworker who is trying to log into his home computer which has windows 7. He was not the last user to log in (and does not have the last user's password, and he is not getting the option to switch users to log in. He has tried ctrl+alt+del, Windows + L, Windows +right arrow+ right arrow W, Alt+ F4. Any other tricks? Thank you,

Preferred Solution: Unable to switch user accounts in Windows 7

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Do you have a Netgear wifi or NIC network adapter? If so.
Go to run type in

Regedit then go to "File" click on export this will backup your registry choose a place to store the backup name it something.reg (do not change the .reg) Click "Ok"

then naviagte to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows NT/Current Version/WINLOGON delete the key GINAdll (To the right plane)

Go to control panel User accounts make change the way users log on or off' and make sure the welcome screen and fast user switching are both checked.

Reboot.

Hello

I have one PC on which I am running Windows 7 ultimate and Windows XP (via MS Virtual PC 2007).

I have downloaded Windows Easy Transfer for Windows XP (wet7xp_x86.exe) and installed it onto the the VM running XP.

I have created several accounts on the XP VM but during the transfer only the administrator user account that I am logged into in VM XP is transferred into Windows 7. Should not all the accounts be transferred simultaneously? What am I doing wrong?

Thanks in advance.

A:Unable to transfer all User accounts from XP to Windows 7

I would not transfer account settings as they are a corruption path into a fresh install.

Easiest is to simply drag the named User accont via explorer to external and then paste into target.

Or you can drag select User folders to storage and then copy their contents to the corresponding folder in Explorer bar at left.

Hello,

I'm having a bit of problem with my home computer. As of a few days ago i have been getting the "there was an error loading your profile, you have been assigned a temporary profile" error and was just going to make a new user account and transfer files to that one. However when i try to switch to the user account my computer goes almost into a short sleep mode; instead of switching over the screen flickers and, upon coming back on, reloads the same temp profile. I have some experience with computers but have never come accross this before. Any ideas?

Thanks

For some reason, I can not select any user accounts set up except my account the admin account. When I switch over to a guest account, it automatically logs me to my admin account and asks for the password. There are 2 other accounts used in the past and still exists. Can someone help, I am stumped.

Hello, and Welcome to TSF looking at your post 1) Are you receiving any error messages when you try to switch users? 2) Are you able to see the other accounts listed in User Accounts? 3) Do you have Use Fast User Switching checked in the Select Logon and Logoff Options? 4) Do you have Fast User Switching Compatibility enabled in Services?

go to start and type in search cmd and run as administrator and run "sfc /scannow" without quotes and see if you have integrity violations it could also be that the user profile is corrupted and may need to be replaced. First things first though..

It's called "Fast user switching" and is probably under the user accounts icon in your control panel. I am at work right now so I can't give you a step by step since my system administrator has me locked out.

Running a Win XP system, 2Gig RAM, and it's been running fine for over a year.

Both my girlfriend and I have accounts. Mine is admin, her's is limited user.

I have no problems with my account and can log off, switch and shutdown.

She used to have no problems either, but in the last couple of weeks when she's logged into her account, we can't log her off, switch to my account or have her shutdown.

When we go to log off it just stays on her desktop. When we go to switch it never goes to the welcome screen. And when she goes to shut down, it never shuts down.

The only way to get out of her account is to physically reboot.

Again, this has just happened after a year of it being fine. I can't think of anything that has changed.

A:One of our user accounts won't shutdown, log off, or switch

just before log off enter windows task manager check programs running if any check performance setting memory etc.. ans CPU usage if its high then some program is hoging the cpu time...

It could be an up date from microsoft causing the problem.

I have been using a Sprint mobile broadband USB data modem for over a year now.

I had a home network of 3 client PCs connected to a router via Ethernet cables.

I had the modem plugged into my computer. (XP Pro) The other PCs running XP home.

I had multiple users accounts on my computer. 1. Admin, 2. Mine (I use to keep from having admin security issues) and others for my children.

As long as my computer was turned on (no user had to be logged in), all the other network computers could access internet.

Everything was great until I bought a new system for myself this spring.

It is not a brand name computer. (None of my computers are) I had it put together at a computer shop.

Reluctantly I let the tech talk me into purchasing Windows 7 Pro instead of XP Pro. I went with the 32-bit for compatibility with my older programs.

I was able to set up (with some minor frustration) a new home group network using the same setup as I had before.

I managed to get all 4 networked computers connected to the internet as long as my new computer (with the modem) is turned on, logged in to my user, and connected. (Not the admin)
My issue is with my win7 computer. Only 1 of my user accounts on my computer will connect to the internet.

I have 3 windows user accounts on my computer.

1. Admin

2. My user (I use to keep from having admin security issues)

3. A dummy user for others to connect to the internet. Because I do not wish to have other people able to access my user.

When I first set up the internet network connection (from my admin account) I was able to connect with both the admin user and my user. Each time I switched users though it would log off the internet.

To avoid others on my user login I set up a dummy user for the other computers on the network to be able to connect to the internet. But when you log in to that user and try to connect to the 3G network it won't connect and gives me the 678 error.

And now the admin user is giving me the same error. (Which really sucks because I can't get on to update programs)
When I try to go in and change settings for the network properties I start to get the same error on my user login and then I can't get onto the net at all.

I've had to restore now many times to get access back on even my user.

All I know is I've been using windows since it first came out and I think Windows 7 is the least user friendly version I have ever used.

I am very frustrated. Please help!

I hope I explained my problem with enough detail.
PS.
I have run all of the trouble shooting scans and it keeps coming up with no problems could be found.

The error message when I try to connect is: error 678

Thank you

Not going to be much help but error 678 is specific to XP and has description here error 678 - Google Search.

If you installed any 3rd party networking stuff like firewalls, antivirus etc. - any 3rd party network services - and that 3rd party have not cared to certify (test) it with Windows 8. Then uninstall that software and try again!

Hi,

I'm a newbie at this support site. I somehow (??) download some trojan horses (6) and ran AVG which removed them and then I had to restart my computer. When back on, I was unable to log into any of the user accounts. It keeps looping - starts to log on, and then logs me right back out again. I did not want to reinstall XP again. Is there any way I can fix this? It does the same thing in safe mode. Even restarting under previous working config does not work. I have windows XP home edition and SP2.

Thanks

Hi all I'm not really sure when this problem started but as the admin account to as user admin Unable accounts access and only real user I set up another account to test my problems on my HP Laptop I cannot access the user accounts on my computer I've tried to access them multiple ways including through the control panel and directly through the Unable to access user accounts as admin start menu but when I try to click on anything having to do with the user accounts on my pc nothing happens So I am unable to change my password change Unable to access user accounts as admin my picture or add or remove other accounts It's almost like I'm not an administrator However according to multiple places on my computer my account is still an administrator Also some programs do not launch unless I chose to launch them as an admin by right clicking is that normal So to summarize my situation I don't think my admin account is Unable to access user accounts as admin giving me proper access to my computer limiting the things I can do Does anyone have an idea of what has happened or how I can fix it Thanks - Sean

A:Unable to access user accounts as admin

Try this:

Open an Elevated Command Prompt
Enable the hidden Administrator account: Enter net user administrator /active:yes

Reboot and got to safe mode (press F8 during boot).
Login as Administrator (no password).

Open Control Panel, User Accounts.
Check you account and make sure it's still setup correctly.

Hello, I have been experiencing issues with certain programs on some user accounts on my Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit with. All user accounts are administrators. Three user accounts were set up when the problem started to occur, all but one of them has had issues with Internet Explorer 7 and microsoft Excel. In these instances the programs would load up but the main window under the menu and toolbars would fail to show anything except blue. Although I havn't noticed anything myself I wouldn't be surprised if there are other programs which would have similiar issues on these user accounts. I upgraded to IE8 and that has worked fine. I created a fourth user account to see if the programs would work on a newly created account but with no luck, still the same issues occured. Any help or ideas as to what could be causing these errors with certain programs would be much appreciated.

A:Some user accounts unable to run programs correctly.

Without specific things to look at we could spend weeks trying to fix this. I'd suggest a couple of things:

I suggest starting all troubleshooting with the following diagnostic tests. They'll save you a lot of time and heartache if there is a hardware failure, and you'll have the disks on hand in case you need them in the future:

Quote:
H/W Diagnostics:
Please start by running these bootable hardware diagnostics:
Memory Diagnostics (read the details at the link)
HD Diagnostic (read the details at the link)

Also, please run one of these free, independent online malware scans to ensure that your current protection hasn't been compromised: Malware (read the details at the link)

Then, if the above tests pass, I'd try these free stress tests:

Quote:
FurMark download site: FurMark: VGA Stress Test, Graphics Card and GPU Stability Test, Burn-in Test, OpenGL Benchmark and GPU Temperature | oZone3D.Net
FurMark Setup:
- If you have more than one GPU, select Multi-GPU during setup
- In the Run mode box, select "Stability Test" and "Log GPU Temperature"
Click "Go" to start the test
- Run the test until the GPU temperature maxes out - or until you start having problems (whichever comes first).
- Click "Quit" to exit

Quote:
Prime95 download site: Free Software - GIMPS
Prime95 Setup:
- extract the contents of the zip file to a location of your choice
- double click on the executable file
- select "Just stress testing"
- select the "Blend" test. If you've already run MemTest overnight please run the "Small FFTs" test instead. (run all 3 if you find a problem and note how long it takes to error out with each)
- "Number of torture test threads to run" should equal the number of CPU's times 2 (if you're using hyperthreading).
The easiest way to figure this out is to go to Task Manager...Performance tab - and see the number of boxes under CPU Usage History
Then run the test for 6 to 24 hours - or until you get errors (whichever comes first).
This won't necessarily crash the system - but check the output in the test window for errors.
The Test selection box and the stress.txt file describes what components that the program stresses.
More details on the use of this test: Torture test your CPU with Prime95

Two other video stress tests (may be more stressful than FurMark):

I have Windows 7 loaded onto a MacBook Pro using Parallels. I tried to create a standard account through the User Account Manager. It seemed to create, however, when I try to log on to that particular account, it says that the user account cannot be accessed. I checked for a profile under the account name in the Users/Profile folder, and there is none. I cannot even activate the Guest account. The only account I can get into is the Administrator account. I do not have any passwords on any of the accounts.

I use Vista Ultimate edition 32 bit. I recently set up an account for my 3 year old grandson to use. However, every time I log off and/or switch users to enter his profile/account, all I am able to access is my account. I don't even see his account available for me to access.

I set up multiple accounts on my machine running XP (years ago) and when I logged onto the computer, all of the user accounts were visible. Not so with Vista. All I ever see when I boot the computer up is my account.

I am hoping this isn't a glitch in Vista.

Thanks ahead for any suggestions to this problem.

I'm hoping this isn't some dumb simple little solution but I've been searching for a while and have yet to find anything matching these issues I've used my Win laptop with only one Unable Access Users Limiting Switch to Log Off, or C: and User Standard user account for years Last night I set up more accounts -- two Admin Unable to Switch Users or Log Off, and Limiting Standard User C: Access and Standard the Standard is a Visitor user that will Unable to Switch Users or Log Off, and Limiting Standard User C: Access not have privileges to browse my C drive which from what I have read Guest function cannot do I'm not certain what's happened to my settings over the years I know some things were tweaked when I tried using AVG Tuneup last year but I am having tons of problems with the original account regarding changing users The Log Off option under Shut Down is greyed out on ONLY the original user The others function There is no Switch User option on any of the accounts I have changed the gpedit Hide Fast Switching option to Not Configured -- it was Enabled tried Disabled but no change to set to Not Configured When my primary account logs off screen saver Lock sleep etc there is no option to Switch User from the logon screen It ALWAYS says Locked and does not provide any options aside from powering down So basically the only way for me to access another account from the primary is to power down then reboot and login to one of the others So simply put what is going on and how do I fix this Secondly since I'm already asking for advice I want the standard user quot Visitor quot to be unable to browse my C drive Their only access should be Visitor docs and a few programs I selected C drive from the primary user and tried editing permissions I'm not too familiar with these settings so I tried simply unchecking everything from quot Authenticated Users quot so only quot Administrators quot had rights But then I couldn't access C from any of the accounts except the primary so I changed everything back for now What do I need to do to accomplish this correctly Thanks a lot for the time and help The machine is clean frequently monitored by updated Norton and fully scanned twice weekly so I'm confident it's not a malware issue I've been wrong before though

At Christmas (When my computer was new) I had no problem switching users with the fast user switch. But now, if i'm logged on to one account, and i log into another, and try to switch back to the original (after pressing WIN+L to get to welcome screen) it will SOMETIMES (not all the time, but about 75% of the time) give me a long message, that says something like, "Windows cannot switch accounts, blah blah blah, you may have to restart". Restarting never solves the problem. I just have to keep clicking on my username and eventually it will work, although as far as i can tell it's just random. The only thing i can remember changing with the log in stuff was the welcome screen background with Style XP. But I don't think it caused problems. Any ideas?

A:Windows 7 takes forever to load the select user/switch user screen

Work through these steps for Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Start.

The steps begin with disinfection from Safe Mode or boot disk, since if Win7 is badly infected it may not repair until cleaned up. Then everything possible to start it is sequenced.

I would also do the hardware tests provided before rescuiing the data to run Recovery or get the superior Clean Reinstall.

Hi

I'm surprised that nobody else has this problem, but I've searched and can't find an answer...apologies if I've not looked hard enough but I decided to post a question because this is 'urgent' to me.

I had 2 children's accounts in Win 8, and had local Parental Controls. Upgraded OS to Win 10, and now I can't manage Parental Controls in Win 10 locally, so I 'think' I need to set up 'online Profiles' for them.

However, all their game progress, profile settings, etc are on their local profiles - how can I get all this data to be on their online Profiles? I didn't want to copy and paste folders (such as AppData) without knowing that this was a 'safe' way to do this.

Any help would be hugely appreciated.

Rgds,
Andy

I was recently looking on techguy for a similar resolution to the below question in the forum.

http://forums.techguy.org/windows-vista-7/822354-ccleaner-not-working-when-i.html

I do not have problems using the CC Cleaner in my account (admin) but when I run the cleaner it does not clean Chrome. See, my girl use chrome for her internet browser on her user account and I use Firefox in my admin user account.

IN fact i have this problem in a lot with programs like Tversity, CCleaner and AVG.

Do I have install the program on every User account (hence taking up room on my PC because I am installing the same program twice)?

And when I use virus programs do they sift for infections through all the users etc?

Thanks kindly.

With respect to "normal" accounts, they can be standard accounts as well as administrative accounts. Within Vista, 7 and now 8, it's normal to have an account which escalates to admin privs when needed, but remains a normal account for all intents and purposes.

The reason that you have to use a live account for the sync functionality is because the system uses the SkyDrive cloud system as the storage mechanism and synchronization mechanism. One point you may not understand, is that the synchronization is "only" between Windows 8 boxes....not to tablets, windows XP machines, or cell phones. So, if you have 2 Windows 8 computers, you could use the Live Account and then ensure that your favorites and color scheme remain the same between the two.

Each person would have to use a Microsoft account. But it's not like your settings would go to your wife and her settings would go to you. You would each have an account on each PC, and when you log in, you get your settings and when she logs in she gets here settings. Her account is synced across devices she uses and yours is synced across devices that you use.

Using a Live account is still a standard account which can escalate to admin when necessary. This really is what you want and the way nearly all of us run our systems.

I got the husband on and he has user-folders tied to his account, but when I added an account for his wife via control panel, nothing is showing for her when I go to Users. You have to have ADMIN rights to create the user account using NET USER. Which means that you should be able to right click on the old user's folders and PROPERTIES -> ADVANCED -> OWNERSHIP Take the ownership of the folder over! That should give you access to the files and folders.

Hi

My son downloaded the latest version of ICQ, but can't run it, because I have given him an XP 'Limited Account' - I don't want him to have an administrator's account, for obvious reasons (downloading trash programs, etc. that destabilise the registry).

He can't use his ICQ, unless I change his account to 'administrator' - does anyone know how I can 'allow' him to use ICQ, without his having an administrator account?

Thanks

I have installed the Windows 8.1 update on two computers; one requires a password to login which I have changed to a PIN, the other logs in with no password.

How can I log in without a password or pin on the computer set to do so as control userpasswords2 will not let me change the password or delete the account and I don't want to set up more accounts

A:Windows 8.1 user accounts

Hello 1018509,

Sorry, but I'm not quite sure what you meant in that last sentence. Please clarify if the below is not what you meant.

If you were wanting to set Windows 8 to automatically sign in to the user account without a password at startup, then you could use the tutorial below to do so with leaving the password fields empty.

If you were wanting to make a change for the account with a password, then you would need to start over in netplwiz to enter the new password instead. PINs are not used here.

Log On User Account Automatically at Windows 8 Startup

Hope this helps,

Hello,

I had only one user account, and it was the default Administrator account. I added another account so I could activate the remote user feature for my laptop. So...when I was loggoing on, the startup screen would show the admin user, and the New User name.

When I just started up...the admin user is gone at the logon screen, and the user I set up for the remote access is the only one there.

I now want to delete this account. I have been online and read that another admin (the new account has admin privs) can only delete a user...but when I click on the user name...there is NO option to delete that user account...

I need the original account activated, as that is where all my stuff is....email, etc....

Any help is MUCHLY appriciated...

Hello,
We don't know what is going on here, one day it's fine the next day it says it's the wrong PW - and it's only my husband and I who have access to PC - so we have tried all day to get help and when we put in the product ID key it comes back that it is invalid! We have even used a magnifying glass and flashlight to ensure we have all the letters and numbers correct! Any suggests on the the PW issue? The only change we made was upgraded to IE 8, but that was days ago and everythig has been fine! I appreciate any suggestions or possible solutions!

Thank you.

I have a friend who split up with his girl.... but that's another story.

Anyway, they both had their own user accounts in Win XP. Since she's not around anymore, he wants to delete her account, but, he wants to have all her files and programs installed on her account transfered over to his before the account is deleted. How is this done? He just wants everything from her account moved to his account and then delete hers.

I work on a pc with multiple user a/cs on it. When you change from one account to another/log off and then log back in, at the point where you put your password in it comes up with message saying how many e-mails are waiting under that user name.

My work pc now shows up my private e-mail address at that stage as well as my work e-mail address. Yikes! Does anyone know how to get rid of that message? I have tried deleting history, cookies etc and also deleting stored passwords (ie MSN Messenger).

I have also tried following this link http://www.winxptutor.com/unreadmails.htm and installing the tool. However it doesn't give me the option to sort it out

Not really sure on that part of your problem....You could try asking your schools network administrator for some advice on that, he/she might be able to give you some tips.

As to make your windows 8 experience a little better and more enjoyable, try installing Classic shell on them....it gives you the look and feel of windows 7 but with all the advantages/efficiency of windows 8. It's free.

Umm......My user account on my machine is set up as Administrator, of course. However, if I go to the account manager section and try to add a new user, it's not an option. It's.......just not there. What up with dat? LOL

I don't really know what other information to give. This was a recent install (within the last couple of weeks), and this particular run is a restore from a Macrium image file. (I changed over from MBR to GPT via Macrium image because I didn't realize my original install was going to automatically default to MBR.) Other than that, the installation has been working problem free since I got everything panned out. I have had zero problems.

Could the changeover to GPT from MBR cause problems with permissions somehow? I would venture to say that something is very wrong here, considering that I can't create user accounts.

A:I cannot create user accounts in Windows 8.1

Nevermind. For some reason on the accounts screen, you can't add a new user. You have to look at the bottom where it says "Manage Another Account" then "Add a new user in PC settings." Then it goes to one of those "charm" screens where you have to do it there. I guess that's the way the version I installed works. The only difference between this machine and the other Windows 8.1 machines I have is that this one I installed 8.1 onto directly from OEM media. The others were upgraded from 8.

Is this because they are setup as "Restricted Users?" If so, is there a way to prevent that message from coming up? Or will I have to make them "Standard Users?"

No, you should only need to download the update once, maybe the second a/c cannot read the update history or something and assumes no update has applied.

I think you think right. That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard.

I'd have him prove that his Monitor can show accounts, and have him explain just what evil software was installed on the monitor to selectively erase the user tiles from the welcome screen.

Even if that was possible, doesn't explain the fact that the account info he gave you doesn't work on the Classic login screen.

Sure hope you paid with a credit card. I'd have them reverse the charge, and tell the fix it guy he doesn't get paid until he fixes it correctly.

Have you tried in Safe Mode?

Only other thing I can think of is if he didn't actually set a password on the Builtin Administrator account.

Type in Administrator and leave the password blank and see if you can get in that way.

A:Windows Vista User Accounts.

It all depends on the locations that you're trying to access (the places you're moving from and the places that you're moving to).
In particular, there's a Downloads folder in the root (base) of my C:\ drive that requires this sort of action every time.

The easiest way is to open Windows Explorer as an Administrator. Go to Start and type "windows explorer" (without the quotes).
At the top of the list that shows, right click on "Windows Explorer" and select "Run as administrator". It'll prompt you for your Administrator credentials and then will open with Administrator privileges.

A:How to manage several user accounts windows 7

This is easy with a domain controller but no idea if can be done with standalone PCs.

The term you are looking for is a roaming profile - I have no knowledge if possible on non-domain PCs.

You could try to setup a dummy account, configure it as roaming (if possible with standalone PC) - you would need a file server to hold the profiles etc. Then try to connect to it but I am not very hopeful of this method.

We want to use the Parental Controls feature but I was wondering if anyone knew if there was a limit to how many standard users you could have. We have about 45 to 50 members that would need their own individual log on and I was wondering if the PC would accomodate this many users on the startup screen.?

Win7 does not need services edited as all services not needed at startup are set to Manual on fast triggers.

It should never hang or bog with a perfect install on adequate hardware. Make sure you have a perfect install as outlined in Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7

You may be confusing Services with programs which are freeloading on your Startup. You don't need any of these except your AV to start with Windows. So establish a Clean Boot as shown in Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7

If you have low resources then edit visual effects of sliding, fading, animation, dragging intact and selection rectangle as shown in Optimize Windows 7 - Windows 7 Forums.

I have a small problem with user accounts. Myself, my wife and my son are all set up as Computer Administrators. However in Windows Explorer I can only see my docs and my sons docs but not my wife's, she can see her docs and my son's docs but not mine. As neither of us have a problem with sharing documents and often are sat together at the computer it is annoying not to be able to open up say an XL file or a Word doc held on the others profile. We then have to fiddle about switching users. Is there an easy fix so we can both see each others docs on our computer?

A:Help Re/user Accounts In Windows Explorer

Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file typesUncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.Click Yes to confirm. After enabling, see if you are able to view your wife folder.

Hello

I have been chasing up an answer to this problem for a couple of weeks now and have found a number of people with same symptoms but no answer which works.

When I go to the User Accouns page the dialog box for the "Choose the Account you would like to change" is blank.

I am an administrator and there are 2 accounts on my notebook - windows 7 professional.

I can view the accounts through the run command, but would like to know why the dialog is empty and what the fix is for this.

I have done a scan for errors - none found.

Done a complete reinstall - Accounts still not visible.

Looking on a variety of forums, this appears to have been happening to XP and Vista prior to Windows 7.

However none of the fixes for XP or Vista work (Some don't even apply).

Does anyone have a solution for this bug?

Thanks

A:User Accounts / Manage Accounts Blank

Microsoft has an article on this issue, please read this and try the solutions if you haven't already. Oh yeah, welcome to SevenForums.

Granted... It's for XP but I can't seem to find the Win7 version.

Several dialog boxes are blank

EDIT: Here's a fix for the "Windows Features" blank dialog. I figure it might tell you what your problem is as well.

Hi all I can t find any mention of my problem on this or any other forum Or at least I don t think I can Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated Get Only Accounts Accounts User Cannot Admin Can DHCP, Here is my set-up Linksys DSL modem connected to an Apple Airport Extreme wireless router The modem is configured to be the DHCP server the Airport is set to bridge mode I have a new Compaq Presario desktop running Vista Home Basic with a Belkin wireless-G USB dongle All of this discussion is about wireless btw - Only Admin Accounts Cannot Get DHCP, User Accounts Can I don t have a long enough CAT- cable to connect the Airport and PC I have users set up on the PC - true unlocked administrator account and standard users When I boot up and connect as any of the standard users they automatically detect and connect to the Airport and receive IP addresses But when I change user to be the administrator the connection drops after a few seconds The Airport network is visible to Only Admin Accounts Cannot Get DHCP, User Accounts Can Vista because it is in the list of available networks But if I try to connect to it it fails and the Vista diagnostic tool tells me it has been unable to connect for unknown reason One of the standard users used to Only Admin Accounts Cannot Get DHCP, User Accounts Can have admin rights and that account had exactly the same problem If I log in from a boot-up as the administrator I also cannot connect to the network If the administrator account has been used and logged out the other users cannot connect to the Airport I have to re-boot before they can connect again I also have a MacBook and a Nokia N both of which can log into the network and get IP addresses fine If it s important I m using WPA This is not just irritating but also dangerous Because I am unable to use the internet from an administrator account I am unable to do things like updating my Norton software so I m putting myself at risk I assume the problem is rooted in how Vista treats admin users and the threats it perceives from internet access as such a user As mentioned I have Norton installed and Windows Firewall turned off A friend of mine suggested it might be because I ve got the network set as public and Vista doesn t want to connect an admin account to it but as I can t connect as an administrator to that network then I can t change the Vista setting Catch I haven t tried the registry fix for DHCP flags because I assume that if that was my problem then none of the accounts would be able to connect to the internet Has anyone come across a problem like this before I would appreciate any ideas you may have Please let me know if any detailed information would help Cheers ShuggyX nbsp

I have a SDD and my 60GB is kinda down to 6gb of space left, I seen a slight speed decrease and I assume its because the hard drive is running short of available space,
I clean up my deleted files etc often,

Ive noticed there are user accounts that are hidden:

homegroup
aspnet
guest
My account(The only account I ever use)
administrator

can any of these account be deleted to save HardDrive Space
or is it time for a bigger SSD HD

A:Deleting windows built in User Accounts

Hello Joe,

Other than your user account, the others are system accounts and/or groups that Windows 7 uses to run Windows 7. Deleting them will most likely end in you having to reinstall Windows 7, so do not delete them.

Here's something to look at to help find what is taking up space on your HDD to allow you to possibly reduce some of it to help save space. In addition, you could also use a free program like WinDirStat to help see exactly what is using up your hard drive's space.

Hard Disk Space - Free Up and Recover

Hope this helps,

the closest we have found to our same problem is number on thread t background one of our customers has run into a problem they have been using XPhome for about a year SP installed smoothly and windows user for XP created password accounts has run well for a few months they turned on automatic update it installed then next boot problem it asked them for logon password where there was previously no more specifically blank password We tried booting into safe mode as admin it also asked for a password where there was none We windows XP created password for user accounts have not found a default password none of the defaults we knew for other microsoft products seem to work The closest thing to a solution we have found is KB but this article assumes they made a password disk which they didn t I think because they were not as suspicious of microsoft as I am nor have admin priviledge because the OS or some updated part of it seems to have forced a password on ALL accounts where they were all previously blank so we can t even start in safe mode They windows XP created password for user accounts do not relish wiping their OS and starting over and neither do I any ideas similar problems nbsp

All I want to do is have two Admin level access passwords into Windows xp & vista.
The only level of control difference being the inability to change each other passwords.
Otherwise, each user gets exactly the same priveliges, outlook accounts, desktop network, performance, security and programme settings. If one user changes something , it shows up when the other user logs in.
Can somebody please tell me how to do this?

A:Synchronised windows workstation user accounts

Hi there

If you want you useraccounts to have administrators privileges on your workstations, then they can do anything.

If you want your users to shraed te same desktop and applkications settings then you can have them to share the same user profile.
There are ways to do this in a domain environment (roaming profiles / mandatory profiles) but I don't know if that can be done without a domain.

Try look at an application like this - http://www.research-lab.com/userprofilemirrorread.htm.

This might be helpful in this case.

Mikkel

Hi, My uncle cannot log into Windows because somehow the user account names are gone from the Windows XP login screen. I mean I can't do a system restore without logging into Windows can I? I tried booting with the Windows XP installation cd. I got to a point where I thought I was about to reinstall windows but I wasn't sure so I stopped. I would rather not reinstall Windows for him if there is a way to get back onto the Windows desktop. Someone let me know what I should try. Thanks.
