I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

The Windows upgrade media requires a previous version of windows to be present on the hard drive and activated in order for the installation to proceed Meaning if you need to reinstall win you would first have to reinstall and activate your old os Slightly different topic but totally related If you installed the Vista Upgrade the way Microsoft intended without using the quot special workaround quot the license key for your previous os would become invalid to prevent you from running more than one copy of windows with an upgrade license The Windows Upgrade requires an activated os to be present on the hard drive so Vista s workaround can t be used with win Assuming the win upgrade also invalidates your previous license wouldn Windows 7 Fail? Upgrade = t that mean it s impossible to reinstall win because you can t activate your old os I ve been wanting to ask about this for a long time but I kept putting it off so sorry if this has been answered before nbsp

I'm upgrade Windows fail 7 an intermediate Windows 7 upgrade fail computer user and I just upgraded to windows from windows vista During the installation of Windows it didn't work the first time and said it restored my old OS I tried again and it actually finished installing But except now my computer only works in safe mode If I try to start windows normally I get an unexpected reboot that brings me to a screen to choose how to start windows Sometimes my desktop will load up but then within minutes it will reboot again out of nowhere Can someone help me Also When i first started the installation of Windows there is a first CD used to update system BIOS and firmware I walked away for a minute and came back to a screen that said my laptop was put into hibernation to protect it from over heating I'm not sure if that part was done yet but it definitely said not to turn off my computer while it was installing that part Does that have something to do with my problem now

Okay so I am a college student. I bought a windows anytime upgrade key for Home Premium to Professional. I need it for the classes I am taking. Only when I enter the product key it validates then I press upgrade and a few seconds later it says it was unsuccessful. Following that it says that my key doesn't work for windows anytime upgrade and to enter a different code. The key is specifically for upgrading through windows anytime upgrade from Home Premium to Professional. I am quite frustrated

If you manually changed your boot order to boot from the CD/DVD first, you have to switch it back to the hard drive on the first reboot. You only want to boot from the CD/DVD once to start the install.

I've been trying to upgrade to Windows 10 for a while now, but I keep getting the error code 8004100E. Windows update seems to think it is downloading fine, but when it restarts in order to configure the windows 10 update, it just boots windows 7 as normal.

I've tried deleting everything in the softwaredistribution downloads folder, but that doesn't seem to help.
I've also tried using the windows 10 media creation tool to download it and create an iso, but this also fails.

I've noticed that when windows update thinks that the upgrade has downloaded and ready to be installed that there is only about 450mb in the downloads folder of C:windows/softwaredistribution where I figure it should be closer to 3GB.

Thanks in advance for the help!

A:Windows 8.1 to 10 upgrade fail; No boot; avgidsha.sys

Hey...  I was able to access the drive when connected via the USB hard drive cradle on the latest version of Ubuntu.  The older version of Ubuntu only showed the drive but gave me no options to access it.

It appears that the drive might be failing.  I was able to copy the data I wanted.  I was also able to modify the avg system files as directed in the AVG support link provided in my previous post.  However, the system will still not boot.  Now it gets me back to essentially the same place as before but now it balks at file avgboot.sys or something like that.  However, this file was renamed in the earlier step, so I'm not sure what is going on there.

Anyway, I got my data and suspect the drive is failing, so I'm just going to replace the drive and install Windows 10 fresh.

When I tried upgrading from windows 7 to 10 on my Inspiron N5050 the screen had the windows 10 logo and spinning dots below it before going black. I had to hard restart my laptop. I contacted dell support  who said windows 10 was not compatable with my computer. They said I needed to restore my OS back to windows 7. When I start my computer I  can enter the bootup menu briefly before it automatically goes the windows 10 logo with the spinning dots. It stays like this for about a minute before going to the black screen. Any help with restoring to windows 7 from this point?

Have you read through this tutorial on how to upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 8 CP?

Upgrade Install from Windows 7 or Vista to Windows 8 - Windows 8 Forums[2]=Installation and Setup

Personally, I'd suggest installing 8 on a separate partition rather than replacing 7. Windows 8 is still a test version and has not been finalized. If you're not happy with Windows 8, you can always boot into Windows 7, delete the Windows 8 partition, and continue using Windows 7 without having to go through another clean install of 7.

Copy & Paste - in Windows Recovery Console
than copy & paste your data to new install.

A:Windows XP Crash Issues - Hard Drive fail, start up fail

Hi there
So what I gather is that you now cannot start your computer up at all, due to this issue. I'm actually unsure of the problem, it sounds to me like a Virus has been at your computer. It can't really be a hardware issue I don't think... I mean it is possible that what could have been happening is that your computer (Desktop or Laptop?) is overheating and its been damaged because of that... But that wouldn't really make sense, and also having Custom Built a computer I'm sure you'd have been smart enough to install a thoroughly capable cooling system.
It sounds to me like your hard drive has been corrupted though, BSOD usually means a pretty big issue. Thats why I was thinking hardware problem to begin with, you don't often get it for Virus's.
A couple of things we need to know:
Do you have any sort of Anti-Virus installed? If so, which one? How frequently did it scan? Did you find any virus's?
Also, how far into the boot process does the computer get before it loops? Are you able to enter BIOS settings before Blue Screen comes up and it loops? What happens when it loops?
And do you have a startup / boot disk for your computer. You certainly should do.

I have two Windows 7 64 bit systems that worked perfectly until approx two weeks ago. They started becoming unresponsive to various websites, such as b1015.com (unable to listen live). Both computers then started having problems opening sites through google searches.

Following this, most updates on both computers fail. Downloads from the internet fail. Updating flash on one - failed. downloading .net framework update - failed.

One computer has MSE - updated and ran scan - no threats found
One computer has AVast - updated and ran scan - no threats found

Tried to download malwarebytes on the computer with avast - failed
went to XP station - downloaded to thumb drive and installed from thumb drive and ran  - no threats found

from cmd prompt -  ran sfc /scannow on both computers  -  no problems found

Can anyone give me any ideas of where to go from here to get both of these computers working properly again

Hello,

After updating new catalyst 11.12 my screen goes black during the shutdown/restart mode. The computer still runs and I have to hold shutdown button to restart then it'll come up. It only happens when you shutdown/restart. I'm running Win 7 64 bit Home Premium so I'm wondering if there's a windows problem. Any help would be appreciated thank you.

Alienware M17
Win 7 64 bit HP
8gb DDR3
ATI Radeon Mobility 4870

A:ATI 11.12 upgrade fail

sounds like a compatibility issue. Run driver sweep in safe mode and uninstall the current ATI driver and then download and install a previous version.

YOu wont see much benifit from the 11.12 update, its mainly addressing multi gpu setups for scyrim and bf3. not really aimed at laptops.

Office 2007 (medialess oem) SP1 fails to install (all the other updates incl. kb946691 installed fine)
Adobe reader will not install
Autodesk Inventor 2009 SP1 wont install
The common theme seems to corrupt cab files. I've tried having the UAC turned off, it's a brand new machine without any antivirus on it (yet). I've tried to download and install all of these multiple times, I've even downloaded a few of them on a different computer to see if that was the problem.
Does anyone have any clues as to what could be causing these issues?

Try one of two things :

1) IN either the "run" window or "start search" off the Start Menu type in %temp% then press Enter. This will open the Temporary Files folder. Delete all the files present here. Some may fail to delete as an open process is using them. This is normal and fine. Reboot. Retry the update

2) Run "msconfig" in the same manor you ran the other command. Goto the startup tab and click "Disable All", click OK and reboot. Try the update. Once it completes, assuming it does, re-run that command, back to the startup tab and click "Enable All" and reboot.

Hey all So I hear W is pretty popular now or something I've been attempting to upgrade my Vista install to recently but have come across a strange issue Im currently running x Vista Ultimate and am trying to upgrade to x W ultimate however whenever I select the x package on the disk I have I'm greeted with this error message Uploaded with ImageShack W7 upgrade -> Vista fail? us Weird no It seems to be contradicting itself So I tried launching the bit package and installing that in case I was wrong Vista -> W7 upgrade fail? and was actually running x all these years and was greeted with Uploaded with ImageShack us So great I can't install x because apparently I'm running x and I can't install x because I'm already running x Good job windows I've tried W ultimate discs and it's happened with both in exactly the same way so I suspect the problem lies deep within my Vista installation Has anyone come across an error like this before Or have any suggestions on my next course of action Other than a tear down and fresh install over the top I can't see a way out and it's taken me so long to get my media library's set up and annexed just right I really CBA to be fiddling about again Thanks all

Hello The Editor, welcome to Seven Forums!

"select the x64 package"

I'm curious about this statement above, where did you get the installation DVD(s) from, the 32-bit and the 64-bit should be separate DVDs please clarify.

Just upgraded to Win8 Pro last night by wi-fi. Cannot access internet router via ethernet cable. Cannot access wireless either.

Using Network & Internet troubleshooting for Internet Connections, I get:

Problem with wireless adapter or access point Not Fixed X
"Local Area Connection" doesn't have a valid IP configuration Not Fixed X

If I do a ifconfig, I see that LAN has its media disconnected. But not wireless.

A:Wireless Ethernet Fail after Win 8 Pro Upgrade

can we see the ipconfig /all - see below

you could try a tcp/ip reset - see below

------------------------------------------------------------------------

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Vista/Windows 7

Start> Programs> Accessories> and right click on Command Prompt, select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt box
(A new dialogue box - black with white font, will appear on the screen ):

In the command prompt window that opens, type the following commands:

Note: Type only the text in bold and red for the following commands.

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog and press enter

Reset IPv4 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log and press enter

Reset IPv6 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log and press enter

ReStart (reboot) the machine.

If you receive the message
The requested operation requires elevation.
Then please open the command prompt as administrator - as requested above
Start> Programs> Accessories> and right click on Command Prompt, select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt box
(A new dialogue box - black with white font, will appear on screen ):

Please note and post back - if you receive the following message :-
Access is Denied

please post back the results in a reply here - its important we know that these commands have worked correctly and not produced any errors
right click in the command prompt box
select all
enter
control key + C key - to copy
then reply here and
control key + V to paste

Details also here
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/299357
------------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------------
ipconfig /all
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post the results in a reply here.
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file and paste here.

We would like to see the results from an ipconfig /all - post back the results in a reply here.

This should also work for windows 8
Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD then press Enter to open a command prompt box
(A new dialogue box - black with white font, will appear on screen ):

In the command prompt window that opens, type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

ipconfig /all > network.txt & network.txt

It will export the results into notepad and then automatically open the notepad and display on your screen.

Now all you need to do is copy and paste those results into a reply here
to do that:
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Select all
all the text will now be highlighted
Next
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Copy

Now go back to the forum - goto the reply and then right click in the reply box and paste the results.
The results from the notepad should now appear in the forum reply.

Hi
I upgraded from vista to win7 and it finished the install perfectly but when it restarted to do the settings it said it couldn't and it was going to rollback all changes but instead it just kept rebooting in a loop.. So now I've got all the backup files named "backup files 1.zip" to "backup files 571.zip" which contain all the data from the vista install in 200mb files and i cant unzip 1 and they all get unzipped and any file bigger than 200mb is shared over a few zips and can't be put back together because it just overwrites the previous 1...

A:Vista to Win7 upgrade fail

What OS does it boot-up with now?

I am unfamiliar at this time with an upgrade producing 571 zip files.

I tried upgrading my Windows 7 build 7000 x64 to build 7068 x64. Some time into the upgrade and error message appeared saying that a file failed to install and thus the upgrade was unsuccessful. If it is something wrong with my iso image of 7068 please direct me to where I can get a good copy of 7068 via private message or in a reply to this post.

If you guys need the exact error code I can run the install again but I'm not going to if I don't have to.

Intel Core 2 Q6600 @3.0 ghz
EVGA nForce 790i ultra sli
Corsair XMS3 4094MB PC10600 DDR3 1333MHz
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 Ultra

EDIT: Solved, just had to run the install from a disc instead of a virtual drive

A:upgrade from 7000 to 7068 FAIL

If you had a working copy of the 7000 on you may have elected to install the 7068 to another drive or partition or simply wipe the 7000 primary to see a clean install of the 7068 build. The upgrading from one build to the next can pose problems especially when trying it with beta versions of an OS.

As far as any leaks you have to run your own web search for the most part along with looking out for "fakes". You are always taking a gamble with any torrent sites to start with. The exact error code provided here would certainly be more usefull since it may be pointing to another problem other then incompatibility issues.

Go to your E-mail from Microsoft again, the one titled: Thanks for ordering Windows 8 (order # xxxxxxxxxx).

Click on the word here in this paragraph:

This is your receipt - make sure to print or save a copy for your records.
If you need to download Windows, write down your new product key and enter it here.

That will open the download window as follows:

Make sure you you follow to path to create media for installation at a later date, either DVD or a flash drive so you'll never have to do this again.

That same E-mail has a line near the bottom like this:

To always have the software as physical backup media at hand, order your personal backup DVD now. If your download link is so bad, perhaps that is a better way to get it.

After spend more than 50 Man-Hours on this issue, now I finally solved it out. Here is the way I made it: Go get a copy of Acronis True Image 2016, I was using the edition 19.0.6571, use the disk edition to boot the machine, then select the original disk as source disk, use the newly added SSD as destination disk. Click process, then mess around for a while till it shows up "finish". Remove the external disk drive, the original HDD, leave the SSD inside. Start up, and everything you need is there. And, for unknown reason, once you finish all above, then press F11 during system boot, the R&R works perfect. PS.I didn't try the R&R disk at this moment, probably it still won't works. Anyway, thanks to the amazing Acronis True Image, now the issue has been solved. Cheers!

My new download/upgrade from windows media player 9 to 10 completed, but the new copy of WMP hangs at my music library. When I try to reinstall it, it gives me the message that it couldn't complete the installation.

Any Ideas on how to get a working copy of WMP?

A:Upgrade from WMP 9 to 10 corrupted, subsequent reinstallations fail

Try totally uninstalling it and then downloading and running the stand alone installer
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win...0/default.aspx

IF it still fails to install you may need to run the microsoft windows installer cleanup utility.
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;290301

I'm trying to apply SP2 to my sister's XP desktop system - that had been loaded with spyware and viruses that I removed with spybot and avg - but as soon as the CD content extraction completes, I get a fatal stop - saying File Not found. I chose to try the SP2 disk because the regular Microsoft site Windows Update failed as well (didn't even do the system scan - just said can't do it). Is there some way around this mess without reloading the operating system ? (Of course, she can't find her WinXP CD!).

A:WinXP SP2 Upgrade Fail - File not found

Hmmm, I am led to think you may have a problem outside of a Win problem, have you checked cables and hardware out?

The easiest course would be a re-install, but A)No disk, B)might be hardware.

Hi I recent got a used T workstation - it has GB RAM x gb and a W Xeon The latest bios A was already installed I upgraded to windows pro and all appeared to be working well I bought a x cpu and installed Memory CPU fail Test Integrity after upgrade T3500 as an upgrade - the system already had the U F heatsink which T3500 Memory Integrity Test fail after CPU upgrade I cleaned and T3500 Memory Integrity Test fail after CPU upgrade applied new thermal paste to nbsp On the first T3500 Memory Integrity Test fail after CPU upgrade boot everything seemed OK - cpu recognised in bios and windows But then windows crashed and on reboot I got - on the diagnostics and a memory integrity fail All other tests passed The problem was reported for DIMM but on later reboots it happened with DIMM I reseated all sticks cleaning slots with an air duster The systems seems stable with x gb but is always having issues with all slots used I have swapped sticks around several times so it seems not to be a problem with the individual memory modules I noted the CMOS battery was reporting a low voltage so have installed a new one After each crash I can usually get windows to boot again and then it crashes after a few minutes Could there be an issue between the x and the RAM or is it more likely that I have clumsily fried the motherboard DIMM slot whilst changing the CPU as far as I can see the T should support the x Any advice would be much appreciated Ross

Hi I tried to upgrade my existing Vista with an upgrade so I could keep my existing programs and files The reinstall was progressing ok and then I got a blank screen for an hour or so assuming the reinstall was complete I turned the computer off but alas this wasn t the case Now everytime I boot up I get the windows install failed message and to restart and reinstall Of course this process just loops but if I load the installation CD from boot I only have the option to reinstall a clean version ie loosing all my programmes and data Is there a of drive! not Vista trying upgrade hard delete to fail contents way I Vista upgrade fail trying to not delete contents of hard drive! can either roll back the reinstall access my HDD so I can move all the data to an external HD before doing a clean install or access the upgrade install option this is ghosted out during the boot from CD stating I need to do this through windows which I obviously can t The reason for the upgrade was that a the computer was getting really slow and b I couldn t install most applications due to a side by side configuration error message and thought this was due to a manual registry deleting effort on my behalf trying to remove traces of a prorgramme I was trying to reinstall that was having problems Help many thanks ps I have a Dell XPS laptop nbsp

A:Vista upgrade fail trying to not delete contents of hard drive!

I've had a problem with the recent Oct 15th Security updates, causing my Dell to hardware reset & reboot after screen goes blank, on 3rd stage of configuring updates. It is the IE8 Cumulative security patch responsible on my machine, tried updating video driver to latest etc.

The (temporary) Solution for me was to boot with the Dell Vista DVD, and use System Restore to rollback to the last checkpoint before the update, found in the System Repair options.

I bought a cheap Acer Aspire computer from Wally World that has Windows on it I had to have something for internet access while I was rebuilding an XP box I figured that I'd do the free Windows upgrade on the Acer upgrade win8.1 win10 fail updates, completing insists which on once I had everything working on the XP box I have tried different ways of doing the Win upgrade and all spend HOURS downloading Win and then insist on checking for Win updates and installing them before upgrading to Win again win10 upgrade insists on completing win8.1 updates, which fail taking HOURS in the process In all cases many hours are spent downloading all the updates and then the updates start installing The progress bar gets to then a restart occurs Then I'm told that the updates are being worked on and the progress bar gets to every time Then I'm told that the updates have failed and many hours are spent putting everything back the way it was I ran sfc scannow which failed to repair dozen files My only saving grace is that I bought a spare G hard drive and used MacriumReflect to clone the original drive from Wally World over on to it so that at any time I can repeat that process to get my original drive back onto the cloned over drive Obviously I don't actually touch anything on the original drive except having put Avast AV on it win10 upgrade insists on completing win8.1 updates, which fail plus Firefox and MacriumReflect and using the McAfee uninstaller which I did before the first cloning I need to do an upgrade because the UEFI contents on this drive are uniquely matched to the mother board I don't think that a scratch win10 upgrade insists on completing win8.1 updates, which fail install of WIN will have all the drivers proprietary files etc that this motherboard is going to look for By the way while I'm trying to do all this the only things connected to the computer are a cable connection to the router a monitor a USB mouse and a USB keyboard I also turn off file and network protection in Avast indefinately since it's taking so many hours for all the shenanigans that Windows insists on doing Does anyone have any suggestions on how to install the Win updates I could take the time to install them one at a time but I can't find an inclusive list that tells what order to do them in A lot of them are security updates for Windows and the various NET frameworks from to Thanks

A:win10 upgrade insists on completing win8.1 updates, which fail

Personally, because you have a backup drive, I would clean install Windows 10 to the new drive. You can download the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool . You can pull the key with produkey and use it during the Windows 10 install.

You most likely will not need many drivers after the install. If you do then check your Aspire's website for Windows 10 specific drivers.

What is the model number of the Aspire?

All set to buy 2 8GB boards but would hate to drop that coin only to find it wont work.
This should not be this hard.

Max RAM is 16 gb. Best results if you get it from someone like Crucial that guarantees it will work.

hello,

We recently upgraded our servers from Exchange 2007 to Exchange 2010. One of major issues is the syncing of mail on our Droid phones. Many of use the Touchdown email client. The older Touchdown clients failed and once upgraded to the latest version, it works fine. However the native email client on android OS is not working at all. I have tried unchecking "use a secured connection" and unchecking "verify certificates" Also since we carry many different models of Droids, different OS's don't seem to make a difference either.

Anyone on exchange 2010 ever encounter any issues with Android.

A:Exchange 2010 Upgrade Caused Native Droid Email Client To Fail

I had some issues when we switched over. I was just using the native andriod client as opposed to Touchdown. I would check some of the android forums and just search for outlook. there were several threads on those boards and something i found there ended up correcting my issue. sorry don't have my droid anymore and can't recall the settings.

Friend of mine gave me her Acer Aspire 5742z-4813 because it fails to boot and eventually asks to repair, which it doesn't. Can't enter safe-mode, either.

Only thing she's said is that her daughter installed Norton 360 a few days before it crashed.

Things I've tried:

At command prompt, ran the following with no effect: bootrec.exe /FixMbr, bootrec.exe /FixBoot, bootrec.exe /RebuildBcd, chkdsk /f E:, and finally chkskd /f /r /x.

I also entered BIOS and changed HDD mode to IDE from ACHI. No joy.

Thanks in advance, guys.

Brace yourselves for quite a saga In the beginning I bought an HP p tablet with Vista on which BSOD, Mystery Fail-to-start Fail-to-Shutdown, I installed the upgrade to Windows It worked wonderfully and I loved it After a few months of working well I started getting strange symptoms It started with not recognizing some USB devices unless the computer was started with them plugged in Then a failure to shut down correctly After selecting shut down Windows would give me the quot Logging Off quot screen then move to the quot Shutting Down quot screen and stay there indefinitely The only way to shut down the system Mystery BSOD, Fail-to-Shutdown, Fail-to-start was by the physical power button So that was concerning but turning it back on was fine and everything but shutting down was normal Then another development whenever I left the computer on and unused for any period of time it would restart On logging in windows would tell me quot Windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown quot telling me the reason was BlueScreen and some diagnostic info I don't remember but that proved no help anyway Of course clicking quot check for solution quot did no good I figured I'd wait till the semester was done to figure out what on earth was up which of course it didn't let me do Upon trying to turn it on once I was surprised with an immediate BlueScreen and quot Windows failed to start quot I consulted with a GeekSquad guy who suggested I might have been suffering from a corrupted hard drive So I bought a new one and installed it installed Windows fresh and thought I was golden I had backups so I didn't lose much It recognized USB devices now without a restart THEN having left the computer for a while and come back I was angered to find the computer restarted and the same 'ol quot Windows recovered from an unexpected shutdown quot message Ahhh So I went back to forum-reading and discovered the latest AVG update had been known to cause BlueScreens Okay so I installed another fresh Windows just in case and installed Microsoft Security Essentials instead Alas that wasn't it either--back to BlueScreen no shutdown More forum reading left me thinking maybe one of the drivers for HP's Mobile Data Protection System namely hpsysfil sys For some reason Device Manager wouldn't uninstall it for me it just sat on quot uninstalling quot so I removed the driver and the accompanying inf files No improvement In fact the fail-to-startup is back I'm reinstalling Windows THIRD TIME right now and I'm not going to touch it after it completes to see what happens What is possibly left Something I read made me think RAM issues But it works perfectly for a while and for some reason the problem progresses The only common factors left Mystery BSOD, Fail-to-Shutdown, Fail-to-start are Microsoft Office and Google Chrome both of which I immediately installed But I used both for months before an issue occurred If you got this far Mystery BSOD, Fail-to-Shutdown, Fail-to-start thanks for reading all that But HELP

A:Win 7 crash - SP1 fail - repair install fail

Last night I stumbled on to something that solved my inability to perform a repair reinstall of Win7 Ultimate. Keep in mind, my machine would not boot and that I had to restore my system from an image after none of the repair techniques would solve the problem. After restoring from the image I was able to boot up, but still could not perform a repair reinstall of Win7. Also, sfc still identified that there were corrupt files it could not repair.

I started to suspect something hardware related like mobo, RAM, or BIOS - not for any deep technical reason, just that nothing else seemed to work. I read something about 'bad RAM' or damaged RAM slots potentially causing problems. I pulled out 3 of the 4 1 GB Corsair CM2X1024-6400 sticks and ran a repair install.

The reinstall of Win7 Ultimate worked fine, no hitches. When I ran sfc after it indicated no problems. The automatic update downloaded a ton of MS files - all installed without a problem (I still haven't seen SP1 - and I not sure I'll try to install it yet, if it does show up.)

I'm going to reinstall the RAM one stick at a time and run memory diagnostics. I'd like to understand what happened. It's important for me to find out if it's a back stick, a bad socket, or something to do with mobo. Any suggestions or insights would be greatly appreciated.

One specific question: If I have to build a new computer - new mobo, cpu, and case - can I just rebuild the OS and apps from an image? The current computer is a Dell Inspiron 531. The original OS was preloaded Vista that was later upgraded to Win7 Ultimate.

I don't think those a really errors, only warnings. Windows is just telling you about all the things that can't be started in safe-mode. I'm 50% sure that if you boot into safe-mode on any computer you'll see a whole bunch of those warnings in the event viewer.

Please run a full CHKDSK and SFC scan....

Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

At the Command prompt, type

CHKDSK C: /R

and hit the Enter key.
You will be told that the drive is locked,
and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, press Enter, and then reboot.

The CHKDSK will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive, so be patient!

After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possibly after a second auto-reboot) -
then run the SFC.

SFC -System File Checker - Instructions
Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-click on the Command Prompt entry
Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

At the Command prompt, type

and hit the Enter key

Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.
Copy the CBS.log file created (C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log) to your desktop (you can't manipulate it directly) and then compress the copy and upload it to your SkyDrive Public folder (http://skydrive.live.com ) and post a link to it so that I can take a look.

A:windows service pack 1,security update for windows 7 fail updates

Try System Restore to before the problem began. This might force Updates to install correctly this time.

If not work through these steps:
Windows Update - Reset - Windows 7 Forums
System Update Readiness Tool fixes Windows Update errors in Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008 R2, and Windows Server 2008

If these don't help check the System File integrity: SFC /SCANNOW Command

Hi , I'm using windows 8.1 on ASUS N series laptop 64 bit, my windows got problem and after i updated to windows 10 and try to factory reset it, it got to 99% and say that the window has a problem, it cannot reset my windows and stuck in restart loops.

I've spam F9 and try to reset the pc again, but the problem still persist and i even try to solve it with the advanced options ( startup repair, system restore, system image recovery setting - all end up with this pc require administration account, and somehow my account is lost due to reset earlier) i even try to reinstall windows with CD but it doesnt detected.

It seems like i lost both my windows 8 and windows 10 on the laptop.

Can anyone please help me. Tq

Since you did upgrade and activate (did it activate okay?) then you should be able to clean install Windows 10 and have it activate.

Hi,

I use my acre aspire 552 amd athion x2 p320 OS regularly with norton antivirus. I tried to turn on my laptop and windows has failed to load. I have tried safe mode and launching the Self launching fix which has sort of fixed the problem however it take about 40 minutes to progress from the start page to the desktop. Furthermore the toolbars don't has changed into almost a windows 98 equivalent. I launched norton and it told me my computer was at risk with problems being intrusion Prevention.. Can anyone shed light to what has happened and possible fixes? Thank you

I bought a computer from my college computer lab that was tested running in perfect condition, It is a Dell Optiplex 780, the second one I bought from them. I wiped it and reinstalled Windows 7. Updates took 24 hours to download and install, out of 238, 29 failed. it asks me to restart my computer, after another two hours, I get a "Failure configuring Windows Updates reverting changes"

May I add that installing Visual C++ 2008 and 2005 fail when any program tries to install it. Any program trying to install dot net framework 4 fails too. Any program trying to register dll files throws an error that the dll file could not be registered causing the install to fail.

The other Optiplex 780 did not have this problem.

Any ideas?

Hi all,

I got a BSOD during a windows update (I think it was something related to .net 4).
Since then when I start windows it gets to the loading bar with windows logo over it but then I get a black screen, same thing for safe mode. I have tried to repair with a win 7 installation disk but it fails, I tried to do a systeme restore after that but it failed too.

I have access to an old working partition (which I cloned onto my SSD a couple month ago)

What are my other option ?

A:Update to Windows 10 failed and recovery to Windows 8.1 fail...

jensvr Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but you can thank Microsoft and their obsessions with forcing Win10 on everyone for the predicament you are in. While Microsoft tells you that there is no risk in the Win10 Upgrade, because they let you believe that you can always revert back to your original OS and setup within 30 days, the ugly fact of the matter is that the Win10 GoBack function has proven to be unreliable -- and when it fails, it can leave machines in a corrupted state -- which doesn't always happen, but it does happen often enough to be a problem and you won't get any warning in advance that it is going to trash your PC!The Win10 Upgrade is know, in some cases, to corrupt the Recovery partition stored there by the OEM that built the original machine.  This pretty much guarantees that no HP Recovery is going to work. Are you still able to boot into a working OS with a desktop?  IF so, instead of relying on an internal backup function, which tends to be unreliable, my suggestion would be to use a third-party product known as Macrium Reflect. Macrium Reflect (MR) provides a FREE version that can be used to image and restore partitions or entire drives. What I recommend is the following:1) Download and install Macrium Reflect (MR)2) Run MR and choose the option: "Create an image of the partition(s) required to backup and restore Windows" to write a full backup to an external drive or USB stick3) Use the option to create a boot USB stick or CDMy experience is that MR, when using the High Compression option, typically can compress the saved image file to about 50% of the USED space in the OS partition.  This means if you have an 80GB OS partition, and 40GB is used, MR only needs about 20GB to store the image file. After you have these, you would be able to do a full restore, which will wipe out all your files, but still then be able to recover files from the backup by reinstalling MR and then choosing the option: Restore --> Explore Image.  This will allow you to mount that backup as a "drive" so you can then drag and drop files and folders from that image onto your PC. Also, once you get your PC restored and working, download and install this utility to prevent it from being upgraded to Win10 again:  GRC | Never10   Good Luck========================================================================I am a volunteer and I do not work for, nor do I represent, HP.---------------------------------------------------------------If my posts helped you, please click the Thumbs-Up symbol on my post to say thanks. If my posts solved your problem please click "Accept As Solution".========================================================================

Hi there,

I'm trying to update my windows 8 to windows 8.1 on a HP Pavilion g7-2261sb.

However, after numerous trials, every time, the installation stops and says "failed to install. error code 0xc0000374".
EDIT: I checked again and it comes after the "collecting data" part.

I've ran the update checker (compatibility), and that gave no problems or errors.

What is the problem here, and how could I solve it?

Thanks a bunch in advance!

Martin

A:Fail to update to windows 8.1

Jus a hunch but it could be some background process that is interfering with your attempted update so I would suggest the following:

Disable all startup programs via task manager and try your update again. Also unplug any peripherals (including the printer) and test again.

Good luck.

Hey guys, my 8800 gts got burned out the other day. I tried to boot but no signal from compy. I then took out the gpu and put the dvi cable to the intergrated card on my mobo. I now see the things when the comp boots the bios but afterwords, windows does not load, or at least i dont see it. What do i do to get the computer back to intergrated grapghics and such? Thank you for your help in advance

A:Can't boot into windows after gpu fail

possible setting is blocked in bios , press delete on start up to enter bios and ensure that first post signal is vga ion mobo ( usually option is vga auto)

if no good, unplug comp, remove csmos battery for a few mins put back in to reset bios should work then

Hi, I am trying to install windows 7 over my previous installation, I have deleted the disk, formatted it, tried to create a new partition, but windows says it is unable to install windows 7 on that partition. The disk is clean, no other partitions exist, and the disk is healthy. I tried testing the win 7 disk on virtualbox and it works just fine, but the setup does not like my disk I don't know why.

I have two disks

Disk 0 would have my linux, swap, and my media partition

Disk 1 is blank 320GB where I want Windows.

A:Windows 7 Pro Fail to set disk

All Windows versions need to copy files to the FIRST drive in the system. That is just the way it is.
If that first drive has Linux on it and formatted in whatever the Linux file system is then the Windows install can't read or write to that drive.
Not only that but from what I've seen and heard Win 7 always creates a 100MB partition on the FIRST drive in the system, a system reserve partition that holds the boot files. Again if it can't create that partition the install will fail.

I just recently bought an Acer Aspire 5532 from a friend of mine. Everything was working fine for days, until I powered down using the power button rather than the shut down button on-screen. Ever since then, when I turn on the computer it reads "Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause." I have the options to either 1. launch startup repair (which freezes the computer) or 2. Start windows normally (which takes me back to the start). I have no installation disk, I've tried safe mode (freezes) along with last good configuration, and I really don't know what else to try. Please help

Hello, I am trying to install Windows 7 on my computer, however after after the computer reboots after the initial components are installed it hangs up  on the "completing install entry.

The computer is an a hp6500f that was I purchased at a yard sale. As it did not have a hard drive or re installation DVD I installed a used /blank  hard drive and  had a Win 7 64 bit dvd install disk that I tried using. The install disk is for a Dell computer and as I have an HP could this be the problem??

The sticker on this computer says it came with Vista!! but I assume it will work with Windows 7??
Any help would be much appreciated..

Hi folks my buddy(who is registered with TechGuy) has a problem with Windows XP Home (I have 98 and know nothing of XP!). On boot-up the system goes thro the checks OK but then says:

Searching for boot record from floppy Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:\windows\system 32\config\system You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows setup using the original set-up CD rom. Select r at the first screen.

He tried this but it did not work!
He then tried booting from his floppy and got the following :
A:\mode con codepage select =850 mode select codepage function completed
Then:
A:\Keyb us, ,Keyboard.system
A:\>
A:\> -

Your help would be much appreciated,
Regards,
Johnkil

I just noticed a couple months ago that updates never load on my laptop. I tried to update to 8.1, no dice. Now I'm getting messages from Microsoft telling me I am eligible to get Windows 10 free, but haven't updated to 8.1 yet.

I have a Toshiba Satellite S955-S5373

I had to turn off automatic updates because the Memory usage was very high and the Disk Usage was constantly at 99 or 100%.

Help!

Thanks,

JP

A:Windows Updates always fail

The last time I saw this issue I had to do the 8.1 update manually by downloading it outside of Windows update. Then I had to use the update repair tool to resolve any other issues. Once all of that was done I was able to install new updates through Windows update.

A:Why did my windows 7 boot fail?

Probably an error that comes with the RC since MS still calls it a beta build

Does the HD register in BIOS setup? Is it set first to boot in BIOS setup, after CD/DVD drive? Try booting HD maker's diagnostic/repair CD to run extended scan: HD Diagnostic

Check for infection by installing, updating and running full scan with Malwarebytes in Safe Mode with networking. If no Safe Mode then download, burn to CD or write to flash stick, boot and run a full scan with Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper.

Boot back into the DVD REpair console or Repair CD to see if it discovers an installation to repair. If not, click through to Recovery Tools list to open command Prompt, type bootrec /fixboot and bootrec /fixmbr to see if it will now show an installation to repair. Do not change the drive letter as you say you did. If it now finds an installation to repair run Startup Repair repeatedly regardless of its finding at first. Next try System Restore from the Repair tools list, then using Command Line SFC -SCANNOW Run in Command Prompt at Boot

Next boot free Partition Wizard bootable CD to see if the 100mb System Rserved partition (preferred) or Win7 partition are still marked Active. If not, rightlick to Modify>Set to Active, then highlight the HD, from Disk tab select "Rebuild MBR", apply steps, reboot to see if it will start. You can also Explore the partitions to see if your files are intact; if so the OS should be reparable unless you damaged it with previous repair attempts.

You can copy out your files using DVD/Repair CD: Copy & Paste - in Windows Recovery Console or using Paragon Rescue CD.

Then if all else fails run Factory Recovery from boot using its Fkey given on first screen, or Recovery Disks you've made or order from manufacturer, or find a Win7 isntallation DVD to clean reinstall with Product Key on COA sticker following these steps: Reinstalling Windows 7

Check the hard drive with the manufacturer's diagnostic tools.
Hard Drive Diagnostics Tools and Utilities (Storage) - TACKtech Corp.
HD Diagnostic
Warning: On some motherboard's you will need to set the Sata controller to IDE mode in BIOS for the HD app to work correctly.

In following the steps to correct update failure issues, I was able to stop the system services, but when I submit the renaming commands -

ren %systemroot%\System32\Catroot2 Catroot2.old
The response is that "access is denied."  I am running
as an administrator, but something is locking the files.

A:Windows 10 reset fail

Maybe I'm misunderstanding you here. A computer needs an operating system to boot up. You wiped the hard drive removing Windows 10 and are now surprised that it won't boot up.

A:Windows 7 start fail.

OK, so it turned out my HDD was at fault. All data recovered to external HDD. I fitted a 320 GB reinstalled Windows 7 clean, sorted a few driver issues, now it's good as gold! Just for info like.
