Preferred Solution: Local Power user cannot perform updates...

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Im guessing that your sys admin does not want them installing a bunch of crap on his pc's? How bouyt just giving them admin but enable driver signing. Chances are most users won't know how to get around that......

Welcome to TSF :)

Unfortunately, the clients computer is still infected. While ComboFix is running you will probably get prompted about Rootkit activity, please accept the warning and allow ComboFix to continue.

Download Combofix from this webpage:

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts. When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" .
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

After removing spyware and viruses from my computer, now I am not able to do windows updates in windows xp sp2. I also am unable to search for anything that I put in a search bar like google or msn search. If I type the search criteria in the search box and press GO or the GOOGLE SEARCH button, nothing happens. The word just sits there like the buttons no longer work. I also tried downloading MS Antispyware and the system would not validate. I tried downloading the online virus scanner from and when I went to select United States as my download country and pushed the button next to it to submit my choice, nothing happened. Does ANYONE have any idea what happened?

Thanks in advance.

do you have cable or dsl for your connection. if so are you running a software firewall or hardware firewall. thats what it sounds like to me. if not heres a link that might help you out...
Then he can access the Registry by clicking Run from the Start menu, typing regedit in the field, and clicking OK. In the Registry Editor, he should locate the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CURRENTCONTROLSET\CONTROL\WINDOWS key and select the CSDVersion value from the right pane. Next, he should right-click the value, select Modify, type 0 in the Value Data field, and click OK.

After exiting the Registry and rebooting the PC, the reader should try to access the Windows Update site. With any luck, he’ll succeed. If not, he should try the second workaround solution, which is to open the Start menu and click All Programs, Accessories, and Notepad. Next, the reader should save the document as Filefix.bat and close Notepad. He then should find and double-click this file. Doing so re-registers the necessary system files and ensures Internet Explorer is working as it should. The reader now should be able to access the Windows Update site and download the required updates for his PC.

Hello. I actually have another post that is being worked on for another laptop. This is totally unrelated. I have a Dell laptop which I noticed that I could not perform a Microsoft Security Essentials update today. Upon further analysis I found that I couldn't do any Windows Updates either. It says that the service is not turned on. I ran a MalwareBytes scan and it found and removed one trojan. I also ran Eset and it also found and removed another trojan. I rebooted and still can't do any updates. I removed MSE. Not sure what else I should do? Thanks.

Hi guys,

I have a win7 machine which is unable to perform windows updates and has other issues.(Windows error: Unknown Publisher on windows files)
Each time I try to perform an update I get an error message. It doesn't matter whether I do one update at a time or all. The error messages are not the same for each time I try.
I'm guessing the two issues are related but am struggling to find a solution.

What the problem is is that in my Windows Security Center, everything is up to date and working smoothly besides the Automatic Updates. I tried to resolve this by going to my control panel and manually turning it on. Still after this, my Automatic Updates remains dormant. My stepson has been using bittorrent :/ - I think hes gotten some infection. Can't start the windows update service. There is not even a service called Windows Update defined.

I tried the wuagent download and force, nothing.

I ran malwarebytes and it did not find anything. Can't run defender because it wont download the updates.

I tried starting the service as it appears on another vista machine (system32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs) but that does not do anything.

Any suggestions?

i tried to download windows Xp service pack 2 on my boss's computer but the following happened.
i went on the windows update website, i guess launched a new update software , so i waited for it to install , then it gave the choice between cutom updates or express , so i clicked on one of them.
there is a bar that comes up with green squares going thru it , and that just keeps on going forever, when i try to stop it, it would freeze the whole computer and i'll have to restart. i know it's nothing to do with the security setting in our netwrok here, because i can get windows updates on other computers on the LAN. can this be a spyware problem if so, how can i resolve. i never encountered a problem like this before.

So a new box recently built, when booted, defaults to the local administrator account.

This is a Windows 7 machine for a Linux guru that doesn't want to be bothered pressing more buttons than is necessary, if you get my drift.

So my question is, after pressing do I dictate to Windows that the preferred used is "HisDomainAccount" on our company domain, as opposed to the local admin account?

If I'm not being clear, please let me know and I will try to explain a little better.

The above is a bit confusing. Is this computer joined to a work domain or is it not?

If this is a domain computer, the user will have to use the classic log on screen (Ctrl+Alt+Delete), not the Welcome Screen. If he wants to switch to logging in to the Local computer account and not the domain, he'll have to "Switch User" then log in with the format of Computername\User Name

Hi, I am using Teamviewer to remotely control my friend's computer and help him with tech problems, and I need to help him with a certain thing that will take a long time. He gets bored of me controlling the computer for so long, so I want him to be able to do something else on his computer while he waits. Can I control his computer in the background while he has a different window open so he can watch videos while I work on his computer?

And if not, is it possible to make a 'plugin' for teamviewer to do this?

I really need this feature, so thank you so much to anyone that can help me with this.

My grandmother was recently hacked and she changed all her passwords herself (yay!). However she did not write down her new local user account password for her laptop.

I tried downloading OPHCrack, I burned it as an ISO file and put it on a DVD-R(only thing I had on hand) and i changed the boot order on her BIOS menu to had the DVD drive as the first priority. It does not run....I hear the disk drive moving, or spinning but the program does not run. Are there any other options or do I have to do a complete system restore to bypass this? Also if that is what I have to do how do I do that without being in her control panel?

I need to generate a report by letting user select the month and year (From and to) using a combo box. After that, the input is used to produce a report with calculated fields.

E.g.: The user want the report from Jan 2007 - Jan 2008. After he/ she select on the 2combo boxes, it takes the fields from the table and perform calculation before presenting it as a report.

How can I do that? Must I use form or report? Any references or sample I can refer to?

Thank you!

A:Access 2003 Report (Allow user input & perform calculation)

Use a form with the fields you want to base the report on and a submit button that will fire off the report using those parameters. You will need to code the button using some VBA to pass those parameters to the report.

Can I use the different user types in Windows 2000 to pick and choose what programs my kids can use? I have a few semi-violent computer games I would rather not let my children play or see. Is this part of the different user levels is capable of? If so, do I have to log off, and then let my child log on to make this work? If not, is there another program that does this, or one that perhaps adds a password to get into certain games or programs?
Are there any free ones?

A:Windows 2000, power user, adminstrator user etc?

You'd be better off asking in Win2000 bit, but I'm learning it at the moment, so I'll have a go.

Yes, you can restrict them. You will have to log off, but as you are the main person who sets up the other users, ie your children, then you will act as the administrator. You can block acces to many things.

Now, as I say, I'm just beginning, but others will have a better chance. Go to Control Panel | Users and Passwords icon.

If the User must enter a not ticked, tick it.
Click Add, enter the name. Next. select the level of access:

Standard, Restricted, Other

maybe Standard?

You can modify the account. Click Advanced, Advanced button under Advanced user managegment. In the Local Users and Groups window, doubleclick Users folder, and then doubleclick the user you wish to modify.

This bit I'm a little cagy on, but you could try with trial and error.

maybe someone could carry this on

If I have three computers on local network and only one has internet access will this update all machines on local network?

A:Updates on Local Network

Yeah - this is a great option. It does not entirely stop getting stuff from internet as it is basically a torrent system, but is much faster and much reduces download demand

A torrent system basically extacts bits of a file from multiple sources, so each serving pc does not have to upload whole file (uploading usually being slower than downloading), and receiving pc glues it all together again. So you might get 5 pcs uploading a fifth each of the file at the same time, and pc can download all five parts simultaneously as download is usually several times faster than upload. It actually works in much smaller increments, but the principle is the same.

I always update my fast pc first, leaving my other slower devices switched off. Then I turn on other devices, and you see the hdd flicking away as it serves the updates to the other devices.

Do not enable last option as it will 'steal' bandwidth from you.

We are creating a PDF file in login user's local application folder (C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\folder1) through a custom .Net application and displaying the created pdf file in application.

The above functionality is working for users who are part of domain and added to local vista machine as users (both for administrator and standard user accounts).
The same is not working for local users (both administrator and standard user accounts created in vista box).

File is getting created for any user under their local appdata folder and can able to open from that location, but not displaying from app in case of local system users (admin or standard type).

Can anyone help me what security settings differ between domain users vs local users in vista business 32 bit OS?

A:domain account user vs local account user in vista

Policy that is actually causing the problem (or lack thereof) is corresponds to Internet Options control panel, Connections tab, Lan Settings button: Use Automatic Configuration settings.
Having this turned on causes IE to load a configuration file prepared by IT department which makes a whole lot of configuration changes to IE, including remapping the security zones. We can test this by unchecking this option (the default state).
Since the machine is in domain and since we are testing with domain users accounts, I have monitored domain controller pushing down a bunch of policy settings which relax the IE security settings, causing the reports to display.
First, domain settings will resync over time and this checkbox will keep getting turned back on automatically. So you can?t really turn this off, it won?t stay off. I would feel better just testing local accounts, but since the computer is also a member of the domain, machine-specific policies are applied by the domain as well.

I have a user with a machine that was setup with Win 8.1 Home. The machine has been upgraded to 8.1 Pro and joined to a domain (WinSrv 2003). I need to get the conten/configuration from their old local machine user profile to their new domain user profile. I tried to copy the contents of their ../users/<name>/.. folder from the local user profile to the new domain user profile (after they had logged in once, and then logged off). This did not work. When I did the copy, I grabbed all files, including hidden...was that my mistake, or is the issue broader?

In the end....they want their old stuff and configuration under their new credentials/profile.

A:Merge Domain User Account with Local User Account

There are 4 conventional ways of accomplishing this task.

Option 1: Simply copy My Documents, Favorites, Desktop items from one to the other. You will have to setup program options again, may or may not be a big deal

Option 2: Use the Windows Easy Transfer option. Explained here. Vista & Win7 local to domain profile migration

Option 3: Use the Copy To Feature in User Profiles, explained here: Copy a user profile. The steps are outlined for different versions of Windows, but they work the same in Windows 8.

Option 4: Use the User State Migration Tool. User State Migration Tool 4.0 User's Guide. Here is a link to a video on using the USMT. User State Migration Tool in Windows 7 - Install | TechNet

I have a corporate PC as well. The only way I know to work around this "fully" is to contact your network administrator. There is something you can try though.

If you know your domain name from work try typing this into your user id field:

<domain name>\<user id>

Then type your password accordingly.

Hope this helps.

Hi there,
I have come across a problem with Windows 8.1 and local user accounts all of a sudden.
When I logon using a local username and password I keep being told that my password is incorrect.

The password IS correct. The account does exist. The account is NOT disabled.
I can login with a Microsoft Online Account fine. But I don't want to (and shouldn't have to) use this option. I have also tried converting the Online account to a Local account but once I do this and log off I am told again that my password is incorrect, which it isn't.
The local administrator account can login fine.
Does anyone know why this could be happening and how can I fix it so I can logon locally.

In our network we have many remote sites. We are currently all WinXP Pro but are starting to transition to Windows 7 (64-bit) when we cycle PCs out.

We have been using RealVNC for years instead of RDP because RealVNC allows shared control of the PC between you and the local user (ie: "Show me what you are talking about"). I've tried Tight (which leaves lots remnants after uninstalling), Real (simply does not work unless you buy the Enterprise version, for ~800 computers that just isn't going to work) and Ultra (works, but randomly resets its options and closes down once you log out of a profile).

Is there a way to allow shared control during RDP? If not, is there another VNC-ish program I can try (freeware) that's as reliable as RealVNC has been under XP?

Hello all I have been trying to fix this all night and day now and am at a loss Let's start from the beginning Last night I upgraded my Windows XP Pro to a Windows Pro During the install it asked me to keep my personal settings or use default so I selected to keep my personal settings where my user name was BobMaster administrator rights I never filled in my email or chose for a 'windows account' I was however signed in with my windows account when I downloaded upgraded I do not want to use a 'windows account' though The first time I had to log in the log-on screen showed only account called 'Administrator' however after logging on I did user create Can new local not a ? see the name 'BobMaster' in the start menu After changing all the visual effects and setting up the start menu like I wanted I restarted and windows informed me of automatic updates naturally I installed them Back on the log-on screen Can not create a new local user ? still the only user I saw was Administrator but this time it no longer showed the name BobMaster on the start menu and all the settings I had changed were Can not create a new local user ? back to default Wondering where it went I started looking in the 'control panel gt user accounts and family safety gt user accounts gt Configure advanced user profile properties' and in 'computer management gt Local Users and groups gt Users' To my surprise both lists mentioned a User named BobMaster name BobMaster Full name and a profile called THEBOBMASTER BobMaster I was too afraid to delete those files at first so I spent hours trying to find solutions for this before I finally decided to delete the user account and profile After doing that I restarted yet again Thinking I now would just have to create a new user account named BobMaster set it as admin and relog This was sadly not the case after clicking create the new user did not appear on the 'PC Settings' user list however it did again create a user called Bobmaster name BobMaster full name in the computer management screen I have deleted this new user several times more and the same thing happens over and over but it never shows up on the log-on screen nor can I switch to it in any way Any help would be greatly appreciated need to know more just ask I'm not the best at explaining myself in words EDIT After changing several stuff in the 'Local Security Policies' and especially 'Interactive logon Do not display last user name' after enabling that option I had the option on the log-on screen to enter my account name and password separately allowing me to log into my created account It is weird I could not find anything about this on the web since all I did was a fresh upgrade nothing else Hopefully this post will help other users

Yes, if you keep this setting enabled your computers will act as a update cache for your other Windows 10 devices and it will reduce internet usage.

I run a small stand-alone network that has no connectivity to the internet. I currently download Microsoft updates and antivirus dats from an internet connected pc, burn them to a cd then copy them to one of the computers on the stand-alone network. I then "pull" the updates manually from each machine on the stand-alone network.

Is there a way to configure these XP boxes to look to a certain local location for updates?

Any help would be appreciated.

I think the "Automatic Updates" feature that's part of the OS is configured to only connect to Microsoft servers; I can't see there being a way to change this.

I purchased a new Dell 1764 Win 7 Professional about 2-weeks ago and have been learning how to use Win 7 - I consider myself an old XP guy!

I was in the windows explorer to see who was listed inder the Users directory where I found a directory with my name on it. I double clicked and noted the contents of the directory was the same as in XP. I clicked on the Local Settings directory (I temporarily turned off the "hide protected operating system files" option to see if contents was the same) and got a message that access was denied. I was told by a tech that this was normal in Win 7 in order to stop people from changing options, etc. which could cause problems.

My question is this - was the tech correct by saying it was locked for protection? If the answer is yes, then who can access the directory? (I have system administrator rights.

A:User account - Local Settings

Hello Pierre,

Yes, he was correct. The faded shortcut protected OS folders are actually only "junction points" to the actual folder instead, and are not real folders. They are used for backwards compatibility for older XP type applications that still reference them by default instead of the newer default locations in Vista and Windows 7 now. They redirect the older application to the new Vista and Windows 7 locations instead.

I've been trying to recreate/rebuild a user account for a local user. The user had software issues that were not present under other accounts.

I renamed her account to username_old. but instead of Windows creating a new account using their login name like I'm used to with XP, it is logging in under the TEMP account. I can't change anything in that account because when they log out there is no TEMP under the Users directory.

What do I have to do to have Windows recreate the user's account under their login?

From what I have read, in order to use OneDrive (integrated in the OS, not the web browser), you have to use a MSA account to login to the computer in order to use OneDrive.

Is there a way to use a Local user account, while still using OneDrive without using a web browser? Even if it means I have to login everytime I open the drive from Windows Explorer? I plan on installing Win10 and using a local account to use the computer (I have a MSA account that I can use for OneDrive, but don't plan on using it to login to the computer itself).

When you sign in to OneDrive using OPTION TWO below, you would still need to sign in with a Microsoft account, but you can do so while still remaining signed in to Windows 10 with a local account.

I just got a new laptop for school, and I wanted to set up RDP on my desktop to remote into when I'm at school. I thought it would be pretty straight-forward, but I'm having an issue that I can't quite figure out.

So, from the Remote tab of the System Properties dialog, I have "Allow Remote Assistance" ticked, and "Allow connections only from computers running Remote Desktop" blah blah.

Then I hit Select Users to add my user account from my laptop, except when I push the Locations button, the only location that is available is my desktop PC. I (maybe wrongfully?) assumed that I would be able to select any location on my network or something. If it makes any difference, my desktop is running Win7 Ultimate x64 and the laptop is running Win8.1 Home x64.

Here's what I mean:

Any ideas what the problem is? Thanks in advance!

A:Can't figure out how to add a non-local user for RDP access.

Not really my area, but even for remote access you'll need to log in with a local account. Logging in remotely or locally is basically the same thing, but for remote desktop you can choose which accounts are allowed to be used. From your screenshots, the top middle, "Jonathan already has access".

Think of RDP like working locally but from a distance. When you use RDP and log in to your desktop you want the same desktop, icons and configuration as when you log in locally, right? Then you need to log in with the same account.

Does anyone know of a quick and easy way to add all of the user's of a domain to the local power users group on their machines? For instance, if I have a network of 100 users and I want to add each user to the local power users group of their own PC, can I do this somehow? I'm thinking through a script or some other tool. Anyone know how this can be done without visiting each desktop? I'm talking about W2K Pro desktops (maybe a few NT 4 Workstations) on a W2K network with Active Directory (and a few NT 4 servers). I am unable to access the local disk C on my new HP laptop. My network has policies in place, one for laptops and one for desktops. Desktops have been setup so the C drive is not accessible unless logged in as admin, but laptops have access to all admin settings and the local disk.

Friend set up her new Win8 laptop per MS instructions, with a MS user account (and as admin - thanks MS!). I normally make a new, local admin acct, check it out for functionality, and then remove admin rights to the orig user's acct.
In this case (my first Win8 incident), I created the new local admin acct, but when I try to remove admin rights from the orig user's acct, Win8 tells me that I can't do that, because you must have at least 1 admin acct on the computer!

I am not totally familiar with the concept of MS accts vs local, but she does not intend to buy from the MS store, and doesn't use Skype, FB, or other social prgms.

Thanks in advance for your help...

A:Convert MS user acct to local

You can change her account to a local account but there still must be an administrator account on the computer.

Go to PC Settings (from the charms menu, select the Gear (Settings), then select Change Pc Settings)

Then Select Accounts, Your Account

Select Disconnect

From there follow the instructions.

You will now have a local account. You will need to create another local account with standard user privileges if you want.

A:Any way to point Windows Updates to a local directory?

Unfortunately, this is much easier said than done. It is possible, and I have written a few program scraps to prove viability, and early results are good for this being possible (very simply, ask Windows Update to perform a search for updates, but download only (this is very easy to do), scrape the SoftwareDistribution folder, and implant onto another computer (and before you try, you CANNOT just drop in this folder - it requires using parts of the contents etc. etc.))

So it does appear to be possible for a program (but not a human unless you have a very good knowledge of the SoftwareDistribution folder)

However, demand for such a program is not great, and I have only a limited amount of time to program. I literally have 27 programs for Windows Update bits and bobs which I want to make. Sadly I do not have the time for all of these, or this one. (Currently I am making an automated fixing tool for the 0x800B0100 error code, and a tool to automate certain procedures in the registry which are too complicated (and dangerous) for an average poster to perform)

The only thing you can use to simplify downloading is WSUS Offline: WSUS Offline Update - Update Microsoft Windows and Office without an Internet connection

However, you will need to invest in all of the updates, so watch your downloading total.

I am really sorry that I could not be of more help, but unfortunately, this program is not going to be made

I've considered running VMs, but I don't want to break the licencing on the software that I am running. So, I am stuck with running multiple user accounts.

I'd like to be able to access the desktop of the other accounts without logging out and changing user. I considered the possibility of using remote desktop, but in this scenario, the computer has a single IP address.

Any suggestions for how to do this, or whether it is even possible?

I would think the network IT guy did that for a reason and if their policy is to lock out the admin account they want it that way. I would suggest you call the IT guy with an explanation as to why you need it and perhaps he will make an exception.

I think it may have happened when I was trying to make the file system more similar to windows XP. With my (D:) Drive acting as my, my documents folder, with folders inside of that.

A:User window shows 2 local drives?...

Why are you trying to make Win7 look and act more like XP? Aren't you interested in learning how to use the best OS ever and not make it act and look like a 1967 Dodge Dart? Delete whatever folder you dragged in and instead drag the contents of the related User folder into each.

The graphics interface looks even older than XP. Rightclick on an empty area of your Desktop to choose Personalize, then choose an Aero theme. You can set up Background slideshow there, too.

Let us know if you need any more help sorting this out, and Welcome to the Future.

Hi All,

Hopefully a straight forward question for you...

We have a company laptop that is normally used on our domain and the user wants to setup a local user account on it for home use. We have tried adding a new user but it keeps asking for the domain. I am presuming we have to leave the domain and setup a workgroup for example and do it that way?!? But this causes an issue when the user wants to go back on the domain at work.

Appreciate any advice/help.

I have 200 folders in the C:/user/owner/local with names similar to {4BAD3A78-8A70-44D6-AD84-CF42571B0CD6}. All of them show 0 bytes, 0 files, 0 folders. What the heck are these?

A:Files in User/Owner/AppData/Local

Hello anaron

These files are safe to delete if you wish. There are many threads here as to where they come from, some say from windows live mail or messenger and others have different views but I don't remember there been a conclusive answer. The only thing we all agreed on is that the can be safely deleted if you want to however they take up no space so can be left alone.
My advise is to leave them in the recycle bin for a few days just to make sure you have no issues.

Hello all. My name is Rob and I work in IT support in NYC. I am currently having a problem when logging into a new Sony Vaio laptop running Win XP SP2. I log in locally and then access the Cisco VPN using an air card. I can log in fine but when I run the logon scripts for this account I receive error message within logon scripts noting that the server where the scripts are are locked out. However when I log directly into the domain using same user account it runs fine. Can you please help? Thanks.

THere are some lines of important info missing from the scripts, not knowing about the servers or system there I would suggest asking one of the more experienced or knowledgeable techs there how to accurately work the syntax for the scripts.

A:changing user/local folder location

Is this for a backup? Because if it's not, you shouldn't move these folders from there current location, there's a reason why there hidden.

Also, even if you do move this folder, Windows 7 would recreate it the next time you logon. Unless you create a shortcut to the new location of these folders in your current AppData folder.

And you can move the folders but it would require you to do so in such a way that you did not use Windows, because that is the service that is using the files that you are trying to move. The computer would have to be either logged off or shut down when the files were being moved, which would require another operating system or even computer.

What should have been a 2-minute task has turned into a death march, the kind only Microsoft can provide! I simply wanted to remove a long dead hotmail account from my user sign in account and update it with my current outlook email. Seems innocent enough. After much searching and finally finding out that you simply can't do this logical task, I found the 'magic formula' to achieve my goal. The problem is, Windows gives me an 0x80004005 error code after I complete filling out the information for the Local user, preventing it from being created. So it's not possible to switch to local, then switch back. Can anyone give a suggestion as to what to try next? I really miss Win 7! Thanks

i want to restrict Particular website bandwidth or download limite for local user ex: one particular local user can able to download Only 100MB from to do this...? using Group Policys or some thing else...?

A:How to Restrict particular website bandwidth for Local User..?

I'm thinking either a 3rd party application that runs in the background and can be configured by an Administrator with the password, or have an expensive router that has the capability to dish out each local IP on the network a certain quota.

If you are trying to stop your annoying brother/sister downloading, just set up telnet or something, I ususally telnet into my brothers laptop and stop the DHCP service if he is hogging bandwidth or downloading too much. I told him Optus do it if you download too many movies in a short space of time.... and he believes me. He's dumb.

Hi all,

I'm experiencing an issue with a work station that I cant seem to find a work around for. Typically in a domain environment you would have a log in screen with the user's full name (John A. Doe) with their username below it in smaller font (local\jdoe) as I'm sure most of us are familiar with.

I recently removed a machine from our domain, but on reboot I'm not able to login with any local accounts. Looks like something funky as I'm only seeing the full name of the last user (John A. Doe) and no arrow to allow for the "Other Users" option.

I've tried using the password for the last user that signed on but no luck there. Can anyone point me in the direction as to how to get over this hump.

When I try to add a domain user to the local administrators group, I receive an error saying that the user is already a member of the administrators group. The thing is, that user is not in the member list of the administrators group. Why do I receive that message.

I did a copy of the problematic user in the Active Directory and I am able to add that "testuser" to the local administrators group without any problem.

From my point of view, the problem is not related to user's permissions because I did an exact copy of that user and I can add that "testuser" in the group.

Any solution?

I am playing around with Server 2012. If I want to have a laptop configured for "at office use" with option to go on site, what would be the best way to do that in order to retain access to shared locations on server that is "at office"?

Should I create a standard windows account unrelated to my domain controller, and have them VPN regardless if they are in office or on site? Or is there a way to have a laptop configured for domain use, where it will still be functional (local computer use) on site outside of the office, even without internet connection (I know you can's VPN without it).

A:Best way to set up local and remote user with Server 2012

Well this is kind of interesting. You can in fact use a domain laptop away from the local network as long as you have logged into int once on the domain so it can cache your password for future log ins. Now comes to the more difficult part of your question's. Accessing files remotely while not online, you can set up what is called offline files. Offline files will give you acess to your files away from domain network. So if you choose to do offline files any changes made to the file while away from the domain controller where you shares are set up will have to be synced once back on the domain network. So if you make changes to lets say docA while off domain network, once you get back to domain network you will have to sync offline files to the server to update any changes you have made. This set up would not require offsite network but can bring problems when syncing once you reconnect on domain. But now lets say you have the same shares and now you have multiple individials with the same access to the shares. Say you make changes to docA and the other person makes changes to docA while offiste. Once you both reconnect and sync to server you could have issues with data such as duplicate information or doc merging. VPN would be the best option for sure....

I want to add a user to their PC's local power users group so they can do certain things on the PC that they can't do now. I know that in NT this could be done, and although I don't remember off hand how to do it in NT I know that if I were dealing with NT I could fumble my way through it. How do you do this in W2K in an AD environment?

A:Remotely adding user to local group...

The NT way would be to place a batch file on the PC that you want the user in that local group. The batch file would contain the command "Net user <username> <localgroup> /add" (maybe not exact syntax) but you could test it to see if it works in W2K. If not there may be a tool in the resource kit.

I know we can open up folders from other users mailbox such as Inbox, Contacts, Calendar, Tasks, etc.
But, is it possible to open other user's local folders from microsoft outlook?
I mean the folders under Local Server Mail Storage which are contained in personal.pst file. If we could where do we grant the permissions, I couldn't find the tab under local folder properties to grant permissions.
Please help

A:open other user local folders in outlook

If I understand your question, you would have to open the entire .pst file so you would get all the folders. You may try going the import route but that may be a pain in the patoot if you need to access the folders a lot but I think that will let you import only the folders you want, hmmm but it may overwrite your own.

Now cannot sign-in!! to login and fix the problem I'd like to avoid reinstalling from scratch I'd really appreciate the help guys Thanks in advance Also my girlfriend used the flash drive with my password reset file on it so that's not an option for me For now I added my Live user account to my girlfriend's laptop for the time being to see if I can fix this but so far no dice

A:ONLY USER(local) Password not working. Now cannot sign-in!!

I managed to find my flash drive with the userkey. Plugged it in and the wizard popped up and filled out the new password and password hint, I hit next and then got an error message saying:

It is my understanding that if they return to their PC and see that an admin was logged in, they just needed to change it to their user name and password and everything's fine...?? YES or NO ???

I've had this happen on a couple machines and a couple printers. A local printer is installed and working correctly. After installing some windows updates, all of a sudden the local printer won't print.

On one computer, the print queue shows the print job in the queue, spools and then prints successfully, but never actually physically prints.

On another computer, the print jobs that originally sent to the local printer, get re-directed to some other network printer.

I've already uninstalled and re-installed the printer with the latest drivers.

Hello I have a rather unique setup here where I would like to be able to point domain user's roaming profiles to a local account on a Windows PC Would anyone know how to do this We have many computers a profiles to user Directing local account Roaming here all with a local user called quot PE quot for Directing Roaming profiles to a local user account profile editor which I would like to make the standard profile for people logging in The systems are all locked down with a program called DeepFreeze which means that no changes would be saved locally at all Right now PE is set as the default user so every time someone logs into a computer here it copies the PE profile to their new profile However with all the software we have this profile is around MB in size which leads to login times of about minutes My hope is that I can slim this login time down by implementing this User logs on with domain credentials Because they have a roaming profile set up to point to C Users PE Directing Roaming profiles to a local user account they are able to get right in with very little login time Now they get on quickly and have access to their allotted network storage space When they log off the computer will restart and will be back to a fresh image Step is the one that I am unsure of how to implement Does anyone see a way this could work Thanks for your help
