Preferred Solution: Can't change properties of Network Connections

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate, SP1, on an HP G60-120US laptop.  I have an Atheros AR5009 wireless adapter.
I have no problems with internet access.  However, in Network and Sharing Center I left click on "change adapter settings", right click on Wireless Network Connection, and then left click on Properties I get an error box that says "An unexpected error occurred."  I tried to do a clean boot using MSCONFIG but that did not work.  I tried to uncheck the "Load startup items" box but after restarting it was shaded solid again.  I then tried to check the "Diagnostic Startup" radio button and then click on "apply" but it jumps right back to selective startup.  Can you please help me clean my laptop?

I am working on someone's XP Pro SP2 Box, and I cannot change the properties of any network connection. When I right click on the connection and click properties is says "Do not have sufficient privileges, contact your administrator"

I am the Administrator, logged in as the administrator account, and the machine is not on a domain.

Any Ideas what setting could cause this, and where it is?
I wasnt even aware you could lock administrator out...

Thanks -

When in windows 8.1 and I look at the wireless connections, there is no option to right click and choose "properties" to where you could see the password if need be, etc. Is this no longer an option in windows 8.1? Is there another place to see these settings as they are in widows 7?

A:Where to look at "properties" for network connections?

goto control panel
goto network and internet
click network and sharing
click change adapter settings
should be too able that way.

I am trying to add a refurbished HP system Windows System 7: change setting network Properties Can't > ID setting to my menagerie It had Windows Pro bit installed when I got it I went through the setup without any problems created a user account for myself Lewis set the system name Windows 7: Can't change setting System Properties > network ID setting to TestPC and started installing and testing some software Simple internet access Windows 7: Can't change setting System Properties > network ID setting web page browsing is working fine Today I connected and external disk drive from a Windows XP system and I was able to successfully read anything on it But when I attempted to delete a file I was told I needed permission even though I am the administrator I found some instructions at Microsoft for changing ownership of the files on the external drive so I did that It was then that I noticed the user name shown was Lewis TestPC Lewis and I was still not able to delete files on the external drive Being primarily a Unix person I have been fumbling around looking for something that would indicate why Windows felt the need to attach the system name to user names In Computer gt Properties gt Computer name domain and workgroup settings gt System Properties gt Computer Name gt Network ID I found a selection with the following description quot This computer is part of aa business network I use it to connect to other computers at work quot Since this is not true I selected the other option and worked my way back out to restart the computer After the restart that erroneous setting was still there I have tried several more times to change it but they have all failed Any suggestions would be appreciated Thanks Lewis

A:Windows 7: Can't change setting System Properties > network ID setting

Hi Lewis, welcome to the Seven Forums.

The \\DOMAIN_OR_PC_NAME\USERNAME combination is not erroneous, it's how Windows keeps track of users in your network (even if said network only has one Windows PC).

For Windows, when a computer does not belong to a domain, the PC name is used instead of a domain name. I am currently typing this using a laptop with name AGM-W8LAP02 (my own naming policy, my home network is called AGM and this is Windows 8 Laptop number 02). My complete username for this user profile I am currently using on this computer is \\AGM-W8LAP02\Kari. This combination \\DOMAIN_OR_PC_NAME\USERNAME does separate my user profile Kari on this computer from user profile Kari on other computers. User \\AGM-W8LAP02\Kari is not the same user than \\AGM-W7DESK01\Kari.

For Windows it's easier and more logical to use this naming policy even if your PC would be the only one in network. If you now add computers to your network which also contain user profile Lewis, Windows does not have to change the system to be able to separate users not only from other users on the same computer but also from same users on other computers.

I'm trying to set setting > change Can't network ID Properties setting System up a Synology Can't change setting System Properties > network ID setting NAS for my home network however I can only access via the Synology utility and through a browser using the Can't change setting System Properties > network ID setting internal IP address It does not otherwise appear on my network I can't ping it map drives to it by any method etc Googling suggests that this problem can be linked the setting in system gt computer name domain and workgroup settings gt change settings gt Network ID and ensuring it is set to 'This is a home network' However my computer is stuck on 'this computer is part of a business network' if I change the setting it asks for a restart and immediately reverts to 'business' Does anyone know what might be causing this Any way to force the setting My network itself is set to 'home' Other potential solutions to the NAS problem are also welcome as that's what the real issue is although I feel I've hunted most of the low hanging fruit already Thanks -Kyle

A:Can't change setting System Properties > network ID setting

If this machine ever belonged to a Domain then it would say that. The problem is that once you are part of a Domain you will be locked out of changing the location settings.

Domain Network: For domain networks in large corporate environments. This type of network is controlled by a network administrator and can?t be changed.

You may be able to change this by going to Winkey + R to open Run prompt and type gpedit.msc

Navigate to: Computer Configuration | Windows Settings | Security Setting | Network List Manager Policies > Network Location tab, you may be able to change the location here but it may still be locked down by the Domain group policy.

Windows 7 64bit desk top machine (not having any problems) just a question

In the Local Area Connections Properties dialog box there are quite a few items and all are checked (see image below), I know I can only "disable" them in Win. 7 as opposed to "deleting" them in XP, I am NOT on a "network" so I do not see why I need the following items "enabled"

Client for M$ networks
QoS packets Scheduler
File & print sharing
Link Layer topology discovery mapper
Link Layer topology discovery responder

Just looking for some input from this forum (if this is posted in the wrong area, let me know and I will move it)

Thanks

Joe

A:Local Area Connections Properties ?

To begin with, you're certainly part of some "network" right now, internet at the very least I suppose (correct me if I'm wrong). Internet connections are exactly the same as having other computers in your local network and many network components are needed in the same fashion. Others can be disabled or unistalled as aren't used for internet-only access.
Some of them can be completely deleted, others don't and only allows to disable.

As for the services you mention, "Client for Microsoft networks" and "File and print sharing" can be certainly disabled (you won't be connecting to other Windows computers anyway). "IPv6" protocol is also almost useless as of now, all internet websites use IPv4 with a handful of them accepting both.
No idea about the others.

Hi all,

I am in the process of recovering a laptop from a recent virus surge and have run into some problems with its connection to the internet. When I open the network connections folder there is no local area connection or wireless network connection options. Additionally, the Network Connections service is hung on Starting.

I went through Microsoft KB 825826: "How to troubleshoot missing network connections icons in Windows Server 2003 and in Windows XP", but did not have any luck. Also ran LSP-Fix utility to repair any potential winsock issues but problem has not yet been resolved.

Start/Run...type chkdsk /r (space between k and /) and hit Enter. Type Y in response to onscreen query and hit Enter. Reboot, the command will execute before booting into XP...upon completion, the system will boot into XP.Louis

I recently changed my user account, I made a new one and deleted my old one but kept my files. Now I am no longer able to pin stuff to taskbar, change my folder and search settings, change the default application to open a file, etc. I have no idea how to fix this. I mean my user account is the Computer Administrator, I took ownership of every file on this user account but still. I have no idea how to fix this.

Sorry for the vague title, I didn't know how to really explain the situation since it includes so many things to it.

But in the process of figuring it out, i changed the properties of all my .conf files to open with dosbox.

I want to set it so nothing is selected as the default opening device.
But i dont get that option in properties, it will only allows me to swap opening the device, not delete it.

thanks

A:cant change the properties of a file to 'open with' nothing

I am not sure if there is a simple UI for that, but you can easily do this directly in the registry.

Open regedit, open the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT key (click on it in the left pane) and scroll down to find the conf entry in the left pane, right-click on it, and delete. After you restart the machine, the file association will be gone.

Hi All I had a question in here if you're interested but no need to TCP/IP to or properties shortcut Script change read in order to answer this question in which I Script or shortcut to change TCP/IP properties outlined my difficulties in having to daily reinstall my wireless broadband card It didn't surprise me much that no one had an answer - it is after all a card network few of you would have encountered Anyway I discovered that I could get by with simply deleting the quot dial up quot connection out of quot Network Connections quot and when I inserted my card a new one would be created i e I didn't need to reinstall all the associated software That's a tolerable work-around except for one thing In order to operate VPN and also browse the net essential to get my emails I have to alter one of the default settings in the quot dial up quot connection each time it's created The path is Right-click on the connection Properties Click on 'Networking' tab Click on 'Internet Protocol TCP IP ' Click 'Properties' button Click 'Advanced' button Uncheck 'Use default gateway on remote network' Click OK three times Now this is quite a hassle as you can imagine Can anyone suggest a way this value can be found and updated directly in the registry Ideally I'd like to end up with an icon that I can double-click to make the change

A:Script or shortcut to change TCP/IP properties

I'm not sure how to do it in the registry, but if you want I could code a macro to do the job for you. All you'd need to do is double click on a program and it'd do all the work for you. However, this wouldn't be the simplest thing to program and it'd just mirror your mouse movements. You'd still need to wait for it to finish as if you did it yourself, but it would move a lot faster. This makes it more of a temporary work-around rather than a permanent solution.

Then I think you should be able to do as you like to it? Even then overwrite the Original File later?

A:Can't change properties to share files

And yes, file sharing has been enabled, and I forgot also to say that I I have set it so that password is not needed to share files also. How do I just get that da*$#ned locked icon to go away when I go into Share so that I can enable everyone to have access to the files?!

It is just me with a laptop and desktop both in the same homegroup, trying to simply have files accessible between the two. I have no great security needs, no big office with many computers that I need to worry about security on, etc.

However, when I do go into security settings for the C drive, and try to give full access to the administrator (me), it denies this access, runs through many files as though it is going to change the seetings, but then says I am denied access to the files and it won't complete the changeover to owner status. It's just one big nightmare. Also, when I've clicked on administrator in the drive security settings, the checkboxes for full access are checked, but they are greyed out. I can't change anything there.

thanks!

Is there a way to change the properties of a file extension? As an example: I would like "all" .txt files to be hidden.

Thanks

A:Is there a way to change the properties of a file extension?

Hello Rwmol,

You could use the command below to set all .txt files on say the C: drive to be hidden. It will not hide any .txt files that are considered to be Windows 7 system files due to access denied though, but it will all other .txt files found on the C: drive.

If you like, you could substitute C with any drive letter that you would like to hide .txt files in, or substitute C:\ with the full path of a specific folder that you would like to hide all .txt files in it and it's subfolders.

File and Folder - Hide or Unhide

ATTRIB +H "C:\*.txt" /S /D

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Well, you can change your name in the registry but mucking around in there is not something I think anyone highly recommends unless you know what you are doing. Good day to all. I'm having a hard time changing my software protection properties, specifically the startup type in the General tab. I will attach an image of what it looks like (will the picture enlarge when you click it?):

If you look at it, the startup type is grayed out and cannot be selected and changed. I have tried searching for remedies for this and some people said that I should temporarily disable my antivirus software, and so I did. But to no avail. I'm also the admin and the sole user in this computer. Can anyone please help me? Thank you so much for taking your time in reading this.

A:Can't change Software Protection properties (services.msc)

It is grayed out, because disabling it might cause problems, like loosing your activation, un-ability to install updates, etc, I have it set to Automatic and it is not running. If you want to disable it, do it via registry.

Virtually every file shows read only when I right click on it and choose properties. In uncheck read only, then click apply and choose applies to all subfolders and files. Windows appears to change the properties (a window opens up and a green progress bar fills). But if I click OK and close properties, when I look at properties again, they are shown as read only again.

This happens both when I am logged in under my user name, as well as if I log in as administrator.

What's the deal? Am I doing something wrong. The only difficulty it's created so far was when attempting ti embed a cover art JPG into an MP3 file in my music library.

Are you sure that it's read only.

If it's got a dot or blank in the Read-only box, then it's not set to be read only.

Only when it's checked is it read only.

Hey folks!

On my desktop (Windows 7 Professional), I continue to have this program icon that always reappears on my desktop. I can move it and delete it via recycle bin, but whenever I put the computer to sleep and wake it back up or reboot it, the icon reappears on the desktop, forcing me to delete it again. It's gotten to the point where it's a huge pain. Here are a few screenshots.

The first one, shows my desktop with the placement of the icon. It comes back here no matter what I do, each time I log on. The 2nd and 3rd screenshots show the folder path and the location of the icon. Notice, how it shows my name and then desktop. I figure this is the reason behind it continuing to show up on my desktop. All I want to do is change the location and folder path, so it doesn't keep showing up. Please help!

I had to reimage my sons computer because of a virus. After reinstalling windows xp the monitor was set to default setting. The setting is so large you can't scroll to the buttons needed to reset the display to a smaller setting. The question is .... How can I reset the display to a smaller setting with out going through the gui in windows?

Thanks Brent

A:Monitor display properties reset and can't change them

Hi Brent and welcome to TSF !

You'll need to reinstall your video drivers before you'll be able to change the resolution.

Else you can use tab to move from an option to the other, the arrow keys to move the resolution cursor, and enter to validate (when you're on ok, or apply). Do it on another computer at the same time so you can guess where you are if you really can't see but a tiny bit of the window.

Hello I'm running win xp pro with service pack I but change properties... group I'm - gpedit.msc admin can't in certain and I'm an Administrator on the machine i e part of Administrators group One issue that I'm having is that whenever I boot up the machine - it doesn't keep the name of the last logged in user i e me I've googled around and found that this setting can gpedit.msc - I'm in admin group but I can't change certain properties... be accessed via gpedit msc Computer configuration - gt Windows Settings - gt Local Policies - gt Security Options - gt quot Interactive logon Do not display last user name quot which is set to quot Enabled quot When I try to change the above property - I get a grayed out window which doesn't allow me to change it What I'm wondering is how do I enable the ability to change this property within gpedit msc Now one natural question is whether I'm quot really quot an admin on the system I've checked and re-checked that I'm part of Administrators group I also can change things like the Autoplay option via gpedit msc without a problem Computer Configuration - gt Administrative Templates - gt System - gt quot Turn off Autoplay quot property So my question is - how do I enable complete property edit throughout gpedit msc is there some registry setting or something else I've looked around google and the hits gpedit.msc - I'm in admin group but I can't change certain properties... I've gotten were about how to use gpedit msc to change properties but not how to deal with this kind of restriction Any info and help would be greatly appreciated El

A:gpedit.msc - I'm in admin group but I can't change certain properties...

The only thing I can think is that someone enabled this policy directly through Regedit, and this is causing gpedit not to recognize/allow policy change. You may want to look up on Google the specific key/value required by this policy and change it via regedit.

Hi there,

I was trying to change a mp3 file properties > details, but it won't let me. There is nothing listed.

When looking in explorer, it shows no album information or title.

It does it with video files as well, so I am assuming all properties.

When I do change something from the bottom, it gives me error 0x80004005: Unspecified error.

'An unexpected error is keeping you from applying properties to the file'

I used to be able to, so not sure what happened!

MediaMonkey can see the details, but every file on the computer, I can't see the details in explorer?

Do I have to register some .dll? Regserv32 of some sort?

A:Can't change any file properties, error 0x80004005

I believe I know what is causing the issue, but not sure how to proceed.

I did a system restore back a week or so and it fixed it (but I reversed the restore), but Explorer.exe is giving me a 'No such interface supported error' when I right clicked on desktop and selected anything other than gadgets.

To fix that error I ran this in CMD: FOR /R C:\ %G IN (*.dll) DO "%systemroot%\system32\regsvr32.exe" /s "%G

So I believe that command did something to the properties attributes.

Is there anyway of fixing the Explorer.exe error without running that command? Or is there a way to get both things functioning without one failing?

Not sure why but when I got a windows update earlier in the week, when my laptop rebooted, all my icons had disappeared. I checked up and the icons size etc and made sure it was switched on (icon display) but nothing seems wrong. This happened on my desktop and in file explorer as well. I then thought about changing the theme to switch the icons but I can't find nor access theme chooser. Then tried to see if I could do it manually via properties but that doesn't work either! I'm at a loss to know whats gone wrong. I thought it might be related to the upgrade but uninstalled it and it remained the same. On my desktop all that is there are the names of the files/progs/ etc are there just no icon.

Hopefully the right place to ask, but I've downloaded numerous software to change the date/time, but what I want to do is change the time-stamp incrementally for a group of pictures, but not found one that does it for me.

Anyone suggest anything?

Basically I have a bunch of photos that I have named myself, but as android/IOS now orders by changed date/time, just changing all the dates/time for multiple files does not then order the files by filename.

So I want to select multiple files and change the time-stamp, but incrementing each one by a minute. Is there software that can do that?

I noticed that when within Windows Explorer or within files Properties I could no longer see the complete date of a file, Last modified, last viewed etc. --what was missing was the year. Then I recalled having changed how the clock on the task bar displays time--which does not show the year. I wondered if this was the reason why the year was no longer visible in Explorer or within file properties. Lo and behold I was correct. Arrg! Why should one effect the other? I do not need to see what year this is on my task bar, I would hope my sanity knows this. However, I would like to know when a file was modified or what have you. Is it possible to change one (task bar clock) without effecting all else?
Thank you

Hello Pintree,

The short date format that you set may have been to long to fit on the taskbar. If so, you may need to use a short format. You may just need to play with the format using the tutorial below for a bit to see if you find one that works better.

A:Deleting my own network connections listings (sys tray network icon)

When you click on the network icon in the System Tray, it will always list all of the Available Wireless Networks in the area, including those of your neighbours if their signal is strong enough. However, if you've already deleted your own networks in Control Panel, the computer won't be able to connect to them again until the encryption key is re-entered.

So I have 4 computers connected into a gigabit switch,
If I drop power to the switch, all 4 computers' ethernet connections (obviously) go offline.
When I power the switch back on, I would expect, after a few seconds, that they would pick up their connections again.
One of the machines does this, the other 3 get themselves stuck in a state where they think they're online, but can't access anything on the network, and don't respond to pings.
If I disable/reenable the adapter, then do ipconfig /rel /ren
they start working again.
But I'm scratching my head trying to work out why 1 machine is fine, and 3 aren't. They are the same exact hardware (and cost $US3800 each)
and have the same windows image on them...

??? Also note that they are on DHCP with reservations.

Any ideas would be cool. thanks!

A:Some workstations network connections don't recover after network switch outage

When the switch comes back up, do these machines still have valid IP addresses, or do they switch to 169.x.x.x APIPA addressing? Also, if you hard-code IP address information (rather than rely on DHCP) as a test, do the machines all network properly after the switch drop and re-up?

I am connected to the internet, but there is a red x on my network icon (yet when you hover over it, it says internet access.) I tried to go into the network and sharing > change adapter settings, yet the Network connections folder is COMPLETELY blank.

I tried reinstalling the driver. Initially, I get a message that says "the parameter is incorrect" Although, I tried to do it a second time, it said that the driver is up to date.

I dunno what else to do. I'd like to have access to my LAN connection. I'm running Win 7 Ultimate x64.

A:Network Connections Blank - Red X on Network Icon- but Internet works

Well, after 3 hours of trying to find a solution, I immediately found it after creating this thread. Sorry!!!

Anyway, the solution was to open the registry editor, go to: "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Network" and delete the “Config” value. I restarted my computer, and all was well.

Still wondering: why did this happen in the first place?

I've tried dragging the cursor over it and reduce the size that way but all it does is hide the icons.

My taskbar is now huge because I have a HD monitor now and I've had to change the screen resolution otherwise my display is all of shape.

I recently upgraded a laptop to Windows Pro from Windows Standard nbsp The sole reason I upgraded to Pro was to be able to join to my companies domain but when I go to switch from the default workgroup to the domain in System Properties the entire domain box is completely grayed out and inaccessible nbsp I am running the command from a local administrator account on the computer with the appropriate permissions not from a Live ID nbsp I can access everything on the network just fine aside from the network drives obviously and I can ping to the DNS server and get to the Internet nbsp There are no connectivity problems The upgrade was successful the first attempt and as far as I know there were no files corrupted in the process My guess is that there is some configuration file that the upgrade failed to change somewhere but I'm really not sure what exactly the issue is Thanks

A:Windows 8 Pro - Domain change option greyed out in System Properties

... but when I go to switch from the default workgroup to the domain in System Properties, the entire domain box is completely grayed out and inaccessible.  I am running the command
from a local administrator account on the computer with the <strike>appropriate permissions</strike>, not from a Live ID.

Try using a domain administrator account (regarding appropriate permissions for network administration).
The local administrator account only has administrative access to local resources on the PC - i.e. does not have administrative privileges on the network
Regarding access and use of a domain administrator
account:
I.e. you're a user at your company - so you should contact your companys system administrator regarding company policy.

I.e. if this is BYOD (your own device) it will probably not be joined to the domain.
If its a company workstation (laptop) - he will rejoin it to the domain.

As a rule of thumb - and may be confusing you here, do not expect yourself - even though a superuser with local administrative privileges - to finalize redeployment of windows, apps and data in a company domain. I.e. in a company you usually don't control
access to payrolls etc. (you should not have that kind of administrative configuration access - even if a company owner you could mess things up giving "unauthorized" access. Even a domain administrative account is not used as a "user" account - only configuration).
I.e. with user accounts i.e. local administrator you don't control access to private network ressources in the company. I.e. you cannot join network ressources - joining to a domain means connecting with the private web service in the company basically controlling
identification and internal access to company wide resources. So that service hides some complexity as well.

Delegate the job to your companys system administrator and let him complete the work if this is a company workstation
... that you may have reinstalled yourself using the local administrator account without using the companys deployment services - i.e. automated deployment (i.e. PXE network boot to the companys Windows Deployment Services or Symantec
Altiris etc.). If no automated deployment is available at your company then the component (responsibility) of deployment services are manually executed by  the system administrator (automated deployment availability at your company will typically depend
upon complexity i.e. the number of computers owned by your company - but even for a small number of workstations the benefit of Windows Deployment Services is great ...)

Basically, the finalization of software configuration for a company managed computer must in part be managed by the system administrator, i.e. rejoining the computer to a domain - which effectively means the administration of the computer from this point
on is delegated to the domain controller and thus automated management of i.e. authentication and authorizations.

Hey all Just change input! Taskbar->Properties->Customize: Settings withut my a minor irritation here I am running Windows XP Professional on a laptop msinfo says quot Version Service Pack Build quot and Windows XP Home Edition on a PC quot Service Pack Build quot On both Taskbar->Properties->Customize: Settings change withut my input! of these computers there's a problem where the taskbar will display a whole list of items that I have asked it Taskbar->Properties->Customize: Settings change withut my input! not to display It seems that each Taskbar->Properties->Customize: Settings change withut my input! time i start up either computer i go to Taskbar Properties click quot Customize quot and remove a whole bunch of crap from the taskbar It seems that I am perpetually re-setting a whole collection of taskbar icons to quot Always hide quot and Windows XP is perpetually setting them back to quot Hide when inactive quot or quot Always show quot On the laptop for example it is Local Area Connection Wireless Connection Network and Wireless Network Interface that are the main culprits Similarly on my PC it seems to be mostly things related to network internet connections Only my laptop has an internet connection at all and i don't use wireless and neither computer is on any sort of network I never use these taskbar icons at all really Which makes it seem especially bizarre when XP resets it to quot Hide when inactive quot and i can still see them because these icons should never be active since i never use them Since it happens on both my systems on XP Home and XP Professional and these systems have never been connected to each other i figure it must be a bug glitch with Windows XP itself which means other people must have encountered it Anyone have any tips

What I want is the most secured pc possible disabling all the network connections except my private network made with hamachi I use it to play games on lan with my friend but when I get malicious tools from internet all my system is f ed up and I need to reinstall windows softwares and all my games one by one -I use the standard windows firewall my computer is xp pro SP -I deleted every web browser I had explorer not completely removed -Our hamachi network is secured with a password only the two of us using it -I plan on freezing my system partition after making all the changes needed deepfreeze So how can I reinforce my pc security without buying an AV that will ruin me What setting should I change in my firewall or is there a better one aviable for but hamachi block all to network connections private network? How not free Is there an alternative to freezing my system since I need to turn it off even for the smallest change Hope you can help me on this nbsp

A:How to block all network connections but not hamachi private network?

From what I've read, you have to allow Hamachi to contact its server in order to login.

Apart from that, go to Windows Firewall, Exceptions tab, and uncheck everything that you feel is not used.

A stateful packet inspection (SPI) firewall will only allow networks packets to come in if it has seen packets going out to that address. So if an application talks to a server, then that server is allowed to reply back. Otherwise all other inbound connections attempts are blocked. The Windows Firewall is an SPI type. So, that should fulfill your requirement of "disabling all network connections" .

One thing you should consider. Windows Firewall on XP doesn't block outgoing applications. So if you downloaded a malware and it starts calling home, Windows Firewall will not stop it. There are free firewalls available, like Comodo and Online Armor, which have outbound blocking. These 2 have a built in white list of safe programs to allow online. If an unrecognized program calls outbound, it will ask you for permission.

I don't understand why an antivirus will ruin you. I'll assume that you mean financially. There are a number of antivirus programs that are free: AVG Free, MS Security Essentials and Avast.

You stated that you want the 'most secured pc possible'. So I'll add some other advice.

Get a router if you don't have one. Even if you have only 1 PC. The router will act as a basic hardware firewall. The Windows Firewall is ok, but you need that router as an additional layer of defense.

It is best not to tamper with Internet Explorer, it is too integrated into Windows. Besides, you will need a browser to configure your router. But you can use Firefox, Opera or Chrome.

A secured Windows is one that is configured to do Only the things you need, and nothing more. When you have extra features that you don't need, it just enlarges the 'attack surface' that an attacker can use. First things to look for are the 'network facing' features, because hackers can tamper with anything that respond through the internet.

Go to Network/Properties and uncheck all protocols that you do not use. A minimal configuration just needs TCP/IP v 4.

There are some services running on XP that you'll never use. See this article:

http://blogs.techrepublic.com.com/security/?p=354

Note, you better write down the list of services that you disable, and what the original settings were - automatic or manual.

Go to Secunia and install their PSI program. This program will inspect your installed applications and notify you when one of them have security updates. You will want to run this weekly.

Also keep Windows Update on Automatic. Most patches nowadays are security related, and you do NOT want to delay installing them.

If your programs can work when using a non-admin account, then use a non-admin account for your daily activities. The administrator account is all powerful, and if someone successfully attacks a program running as admin, they will gain admin rights on your system too. Then it's game over.

Someone with physical access to your PC can do a lot of damage. So you should have a long and complex passphrase for logon. For example, the phrase "Kirk is the captain of the USS Enterprise" will become "kitcotusse". Throw in a number and it becomes "k444itcotusse". I recommend passphrases longer than 16 characters.

Part of keeping your Windows secure is to keep up with all security fixes. A lot of successful attacks are based on vulnerabilities that already have patches, just because people don't do Windows Update. Never fall behind on patches. This is especially important for XP, because unlike Vista or Win7, it doesn't have ASLR, services hardening and other technologies to foil attacks.

Security is part 'setup' and a lot of maintenance. To use a physical analogy, you want to lock a door to keep the room safe... Read more

Unfortunately you have not given more relevant information on network security (workgroup or domain), about what you did before it started, network configuration and name resolution configuration.
Personaly I would use network monitor if no imput information helps to resolve this proble, Wireshark will do the trick.

What is the make and model# of your computer?
Go to Start/Run and type devmgmt.msc and press enter. In the Device Manager any devices with yellow flags need to have drivers installed.
On an internet computer go to your computer/motherboard manufacturers support/download drivers site and type in your make and model# or Service Tag # and download the Chipset and Network adapter for your computer. And any other drivers you need from the Device Manager.

My laptop for some reason suddenly started taking about 10 seconds to load a page where it would normally take 1 second. The download speed remains fast, at about 8Mbps. Also while loading a webpage, say for example bbc.com will take 10 seconds, navigating to bbc.com/news through links will be very quick.

Also to point out that this is a problem only with my laptop, as it spontaneously started occurring in 2 places I use internet, while the other computers using the same network were unaffected.

Also although I am not sure if this is relevant, this may have something to do with an infection, as also all my icons on the desktop were made invisible(but still there when highlighted)

Things I have attempted that didn't work

Changed my DNS to Open DNS
Flushed my DNS
Cleared Cache
Run Malwarebytes and AVG Free check. Infections were deleted.

A:Immediate change in webpage loading speed on one laptop on 2 different connections

What operating system is this?

See if they problem still exists running under Safe Mode with Networking.

If you are unsure how to get to Safe Mode with Networking. Turn off your PC and turn it back on. While it is booting back up keep pressing F8. A selection will pop up and select Safe Mode with Networking.
