I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My pc was built for me. I has two hardrives, one for storage and the other running xpp, one cdrom, one dvd drive and a floppy drive. I now get the message NTLDR missing. I can only get as far as BIOS and no where else. I have tried changing the boot sequence. No luck. I copied the NTLDR, ntdetect and boot.ini to a floppy, inserted the all legitimate OS prepared to reformat and still nothing. I get absolutely no where. I am now in the process of checking everthing inside the tower, systematically unplugging each drive to see if that makes a difference. Most of everything I have tried has been suggestions from the internet. If anyone has any advice I would certainly be greatful.
Thanks in advance

Your copy of windows is all bitter and twisted - not likely to be a hardware problem - and likely to be more than just NTLDR.
Restart the PC and boot from the windows XP install CD.
Ignore the first offer to repair and opt for install windows. Follow the wizard until you get to the next offer to repair - take that one and it will replace all the critical windows XP files for you. Much quicker than trying to this manually and unless you have a bad hard drive it will not damage your data files or trash your settings and drivers. You may have to re-activate windows.

Okay, I think it might be something to do with me partitioning my HDD yesterday... Well, I decided that instead of having a random 50GB sitting there unformatted, unused, I would format it and give it a drive letter. So, I did this. It's just an unused partition on my C:/ drive. But then I restarted and now I have the messege NTLDR is missing, Press any key to restart. So, I've tried making an MS-DOS boot disk, but that doesn't work. If it was an actual physical hard drive I could just take it out and see if that worked. But because it's just a partition on the main HDD I can't do anything. Please advise me on what to do... I'm stuck on a laptop with none of the programs I need.
Thanks in advance,

A:NTLDR is missing, press any key to restart

I'm new so please forgive me if this doesn't post right. Try this and see if it is easier to understand. If you have Windows CD...1. Insert your Windows XP CD into your CD and assure that your CD-ROM drive is capable of booting the CD.2. Once you have booted from CD, do NOT select the option that states: Press F2 to initiate the Automated System Recovery (ASR) tool. You?re going to proceed until you see the following screen, at which point you will press the ?R? key to enter the recovery console:3. After you have selected the appropriate option from step two, you will be prompted to select a valid Windows installation (typically number ?1").Select the installation number, and hit Enter. If there is an administrator password for the administrator account, enter it and hit Enter (if asked for the password, and you don't know it, you're out of luck). You will be greeted with this screen, which indicates a recovery console at the ready:4. There are eight commands you must enter in sequence to repair any of the issues I noted in the opening of this guide.I will introduce them here, and then show the results graphically in the next six steps.NOTE. Make sure, you press Enter after each command. Make sure, all commands are exact, including "spaces".These commands are as follows:CD..ATTRIB -H C:\boot.iniATTRIB -S C:\boot.iniATTRIB -R C:\boot.inidel boot.iniBOOTCFG /RebuildNote about the above command.BOOTCFG /REBUILD command which searches for pre-existing installations of Windows XP and rebuilds sundry essential components of the Windows operating system, recompiles the BOOT.INI file and corrects a litany of common Windows errors. It is very important that you do one or both of the following two things:A.) Every Windows XP owner must use /FASTDETECT as OS Load Option when the rebuild process is finalizing.B.) If you are the owner of a CPU featuring Intel?s XD or AMD?s NX buffer overflow protection, you must also use /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN as an OS Load Option. For the Enter Load Identifier portion of this command, you should enter the name of the operating system you have installed. If, for example, you are using Windows XP Home, you could type Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition for the identifier (it's not crucial, however what the name is, as long, as it's meaningful). Here is your computer screen:5. Following command verifies the integrity of the hard drive containing the Windows XP installation. While this step is not an essential function in our process, it?s still good to be sure that the drive is physically capable of running windows, in that it contains no bad sectors or other corruptions that might be the culprit:CHKDSK /R6. This last command writes a new boot sector to the hard drive and cleans up all the loose ends we created by rebuilding the BOOT.INI file and the system files. When the Windows Recovery Console asks you if you are Sure you want to write a new bootsector to the partition C: ? just hit ?Y?, then Enter to confirm your decision:FIXBOOT7. It?s time to reboot your PC by typingEXIT and pressing Enter. With any luck, your PC will boot successfully into Windows XP as if your various DLL, Hive, EXE and NTLDR errors never existed.2. If you don't have Windows CD...Download Windows Recovery Console: http://www.thecomputerparamedic.com/files/rc.isoDownload, and install free Imgburn: http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=downloadUsing Imgburn, burn rc.iso to a CD.Boot to the CD...let it finish loading. When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console. Then, follow instructions from Step #3 above. Thanks To Broni For The Instructions

Hello. My problem is when I boot up my computer all I get is this "NTLDR is missing Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart". I can still get into bios, but that's it. I've desided to order the recovery discs for my computer to do a full system recovery, hoping that will fix it.

My question is though, will the discs fix this "NTLDR is missing" thing, or will I have to fix it some other way??

Really appreciate any help you can give me.

I insert my Win XP and also set my boot from my DVD Drive, but the message is still the same.

Need help soonest

you can boot from the windows xp disc and enter the recovery console by pressing "r" at the windows set up menu.
once in, type
"copy X:\i386\ntldr C:\" - without the quotes.
where x is your dvd/cd drive and c is the letter of your hard disk.

Well...I don't see how any files can be on the hard drive...and if files are not on the hard drive, then I fail to understand the ntldr message.http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000465.htmThere is no ntldr unless you actually have a boot partition/Windows install...and you say that you don't have either.I suppose that I would run a manufacturer's diagnostic on that hard drive...or possibly just do a low-level format of the drive...to ensure that it is free of any possible debris from previous installation efforts. Then I would try a clean install of XP, using the XP disk to create/format/install.Louis

I recently created a new hard drive (larger) and loaded all data into it from old drive. I want to use the new drive and remove old drive from computer. however when i do that i get ntldr is missing at boot. if i leave old drive in as master i have a choice as to which drive to boot from. both work but i did notice if booting from new drive the drive letter is F: rather than C:. if booting from old drive the letter is C:. if i change cable configuration to put new drive as master, i get ntldr missing again. any easy fixes so i can remove old drive? (I have partition magic but did create new drive from windows XP cd)

A:ntldr is missing press ctrl+alt+del to restart

What you need to do is clone your old hard drive onto the new one, rather than just copy the data. There are various tools that will do this for you; Acronis True Image is popular at the moment and offers a free trial. Make sure that you boot from your old drive for this otherwise the cloning will fail.

After cloning, unplug your old hard drive and plug the new one in its place; make sure that the Master/Slave/Cable Select jumper is in the correct position and it should work as expected.

See if the following helps:Windows XP users 1. Insert the Windows XP bootable CD into the computer. 2. When prompted to press any key to boot from the CD, press any key. 3. Once in the Windows XP setup menu press the "R" key to repair Windows. 4. Log into your Windows installation by pressing the "1" key and pressing enter. 5. Its a toshiba portege 3480CT laptop with a usb floppy drive and usb cdrom and won't boot up to windows xp without the a bootable disk for an NTFS
what do I need to do

A:NTLDR is missing Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart.

You'll need to get to a command prompt using that boot floppy or if you can use your XP CD to boot up, you might be able to use the first of the Repair options to copy a new NTLDR from the C:\i386 directory. More likely, though, that you can boot with the floppy, put the CD in the drawer and, where D:\ is the CD drive, type the following:-

COPY D:\i386\NTLDR C\:
COPY D:\i386\NTDETECT.COM C:\

Then take out the CD and type exit.

That should have reinstated NTLDR to its proper place.

Dear Friends,

yesterday i was watching a movie I had on my pen-drive and all of sudden an error message appared on the screen saying that in about 35 seconds the computer would shut down. Now, it did and when I try to restart, it gives this message "NTLDR is missing....press Ctrl-Alt-Del to Restart"
I re-installed windows xp completely but after a couple of hours, while installing some software for my printer the message came again and now I am again there with NTLDR is missing....

My computer, a pc, should be a pentium 4 with windows xp on it.
I would be very grateful for any help, please!!

Hello Lorence, Welcome to TSF!

I moved your post into its own thread so as not to create any confusion with the other member's issue, as yours could be entirely different.

First up, was the Operating System (Windows?) pre-installed on this machine, and you are using the manufacturer's supplied CD?

Let's get this answer before we proceed with any advice.
Please post back with the information.

Kind Regards,

Hi guys,

I just reformatted my 20G HD. I have an Intel D845GLLY motherboard with a Pentium 4 processor. When I try to load Windows XP Pro from the installation disk it says "NTLDR is missing", so either it is not on my installation cd, or most likely the files are corrupt. I got my XP Pro from the MSDAA; I am in school to be a Computer Forensic Specialist. So, I got a floppy disk and copied NTLDR, NTDETECT, and boot.ini to it. When I put the floppy in my computer though, it says that it is not bootable. How do I get those (3) files on my computer that has been formatted? Are there other files that I need on my floppy?

Thanks, Silvertip

what you can do if you have a spare hard drive you "should" be able to install it in the case and set it as master(set the other to slave) install xp on this disk as this "should" be problem free and enabe you to copy data across either to the new internal drive or the internal drive and format the old drive.

Grrr.

So while Windows XP was "loading my personal settings" it froze on me, forcing me to restart my computer. I did so only to find an error message that read:

NTLDR is missing
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart

I tried putting in the Windows setup disk to try and repair the issue, it detected a problem and said Windows has fixed a problem blah blah blah it needs to restart. I did so and not to my surprise, the error message still remains.

After much frustration with the issue I finally decided to format the drive and reinstall Windows (as I have done oh so many times before). I went in and formatted the drive it successfully copied all the setup files restarted and low and behold.... The error message is still there.

I even tried my powermax disc and reset the drive to zeros.

I don't get it! Someone help please!

A:Dreaded NTLDR is missing press ctrl+alt+del to restart

Hi

An NTLDR is missing error can be caused by two reasons. Either the system is trying to boot from a wrong device/wrong partition or the file might be actually missing. Please try the below steps.

1. If there are any USB flash drive or Memory card is plugged in to the system, please remove them all. Otherwise system may try to boot from it and shows the missing NTLDR error.

2. If the file is actually missing, you need to copy NTLDR and NTDETECT.COM to the root of C partition. This can be done from a live CD ( either Linux Based or Windows based ). To do this, download and burn a copy of Puppy Linux from the below link ( only 132 MB in size).

http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/puppylinux/puppy-5.2.8/lupu-528.005.iso

Boot from the disc and make sure you can access the partitions and identify the "C" drive. It will be the one with "Windows" and Documents and Settings" folders. Then please post a reply here.

A:NTLDR is Missing, Press Ctrl+Alt+Del To Restart? Can't boot up?

I'd suggestion formatting the drive again. Then, do a fresh install on WinXP and SP3. Then, leave the laptop on (and online) for 2 or 3 nights so it can receive all of the updates since SP3. The CD drive might work once the HDD is reformatted; thus, making it a valid drive. That said, have you checked the BIOS setup to make sure that the CD drive is the primary boot source? If you find that's it's not and change it, you should be able to boot with a WinXP CD or another bootable CD. Then, you can proceed from there. If the CD drive does not respond after changing the BIOS setting, I believe you can format the drive by booting to Safe Mode with Command Prompt. Try these suggestions and let me know the outcome.

My daughter has a Toshiba Satellite A100/A105 S2101 laptop. When you turn it on it acts like it is loading and then goes to a black screen with this message: NTDLR is missing press ctrl-alt-del to restart And if you restart, it does the same thing all over again. What causes this and is it something simple to fix? The computer is running Windows XP with Service pack 2. The only disk I have with the laptop is the recovery disk that came with it and there is no other option on there but to restore the thing completely to factory condition. I debated on this, however, my daughter doesn't want to lose all her stuff on the laptop. Hope someone can help with this problem. I have been trying to figure it out for a week and it is driving me

A:Ntldr Is Missing, Press Ctrl-alt-del To Restart, Get This Error Message

Hi Kim C, welcome to BC!This is why I absolutely hate the "restore" disks that manufacturers give out; they don't include the tools to fix anything! If at all possible, find an installation CD (worse comes to worse, see if you can dig up a Dell CD) for the version of XP that matches yours. Check with friends, family, enemies, neighbors, etc. You may also try giving Toshiba a call and demanding a full CD... but good luck.If you can't get one, then let us know and we can go from there. The following solution assumes that you've acquired the proper CD: 1. Insert the Windows XP bootable CD into the computer. 2. When prompted to press any key to boot from the CD, press any key. 3. Once in the Windows XP setup menu press the "R" key to run the Recovery Console. 4. Log into your Windows installation by pressing the "1" key and pressing enter. 5. You will then be prompted for your administrator password, enter that password. (if it's blank, then just press Enter) 6. Copy the below two files to the root directory of the primary hard disk. In the below example we are copying these files from the CD-ROM drive letter "E". This letter may be different on your computer. Simply enter these commands and press enter after each one.copy e:\i386\ntldr c:\
copy e:\i386\ntdetect.com c:\ 7. Once both of these files have been successfully copied, remove the CD from the computer and reboot.Let us know!

A:"NTLDR is missing press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart"..................dnt understand what dis mean someboby pls explain it...

NTLDR is one of the core boot files for Windows. What the error message is saying is that when it is pointed to the place where the file (NTLDR) is supposed to be located it does not find it there. This could mean a multitude of things. The file could actually be missing, it could be corrupt, or the MFT on the drive could have been corrupted. I would start the recovery console ,use the windows disk to do this, then check under c:\ to see if NTLDR is there. If so copy NTLDR from the windows disk or another working XP computer can copy it over the old one. If the computer deosn't start then boot back into the recovery console and run two commands 1. fixboot 2. fixmbr

A:NTLDR missing. can't start XP

Ntldr is probably not missing. Your boot.ini file is damaged or corrupt. If you know what the boot.ini file is supposed to look like, download this program, run it to create a floppy, and then boot from it. You can then edit your boot.ini file.

http://users.adelphia.net/~abraxas/dl/BootIniEdit.exe

Or,

Download this program and run it to create an XP sysboot floppy. Put in the floppy and boot your machine. You will need to choose what partition your XP is installed on when you get to the first screen (usually the first one listed). If your machine boots OK, come back and we will fix the boot.ini file.

I'm partly stuck. First off, the old box just wouldn't start (actually up to above error message 'NTLDR missing'.
I got "<removed reference to software>" and it starts up the system only from the CD, after selecting 'boot fixing NTLDR missing' then selecting one of the options in his list.
I guess I'm asking 'now what do I do'?
I know the ultimate is to reinstall the system but I don't have the original XP Pro boot disks. Lost or whatever; I've had this thing forever.
Is there any of <reference removed> little programs that will help me? That is if you are familiar with his fix disk.

Appreciate any help. Thanks, shoogle

ok more info.........a buddy of mine has about 5 differant xp install cd's and he told me he has run into that problem before and to try a differant xp install disk........i tried 1 xp pro disk and that didn't work...........he had another one and that fired right up and installed with no problem. he thinks it has to do with the drivers in the system bios for the cd rom drives.....beats me. he said after i get that up and running to stick the xp media center cd in and load the 05 media center over top of the xp pro. i can't seem to get the xp media center cd to go. when i try to boot with that disk in it doesn't do anything and when i go to it in windows explorer it won't fire up either......anybody have any answers to this?

hi,
my friends computer can't get past this screen. He turns it on then this black screen comes up saying NTLDR is missing?

Any help on how to fix or what NTLDR is?

Relevancy 68.8%

I was cleaning the computer of old files and junk and when I went to re-boot I get the error Missing NTLDR press Ctrl-Alt-Delete to continue.

How ever each time I do this all I get is the same message each time it boots. I can't type, or when I push any of the "F" keys nothing happens.

I really need some good support here, Windows XP Home edition on a Sony Desktop. I don't have a Windows CD or any other boot CD. If I need this I can make it with your help. Also there are USB ports to use if it will work.

This old man would really appreciate some help...........thank you.

A:[SOLVED] Error missing NTLDR at start up

Hey hater,
Here are the main causes for your problem.
Cause:

1. Computer is booting from a non-bootable source.
2. Computer hard disk drive is not properly setup in BIOS.
3. Corrupt NTLDR and/or NTDETECT.COM file.
4. Misconfiguration with the boot.ini file.
5. Attempting to upgrade from a Windows 95, 98, or ME computer that is using FAT32.
6. New hard disk drive being added.
7. Corrupt boot sector / master boot record.
8. Seriously corrupted version of Windows 2000 or Windows XP.
9. Loose or Faulty IDE/EIDE hard disk drive cable.

I just pulled that off of google. From what you are describing tho I think you may have deleted something you should not have. Try booting with your last known good configuration. To load the last known good configuration in Windows 2000 / XP reboot the computer and as it's booting booting press and hold your "F8 Key" which should bring up the "Windows Advanced Options Menu" as shown below. Use your arrow keys to move to "Last Known Good Configuration" and press your Enter key. I'm not sure if that is how you do it in VISTA, but give it a try. Let me know if this is any help.

HP cmputer, Windows xp. I know a few things. There are no discs in the disc drives. I do not have a windows xp cd (it came preinstalled on my computer) otherwise i think if i just reloaded windows it would solve my problem. I can do a destructive recovery but i desparately do not want to do that. I can buy a partial recovery from hp but i am lacking in the cash department. Is there anyway to get my computer back. If i can get someone elses windows xp disc could i boot from that? Please help

A:NTLDR missing/ctrl alt delete to start; chick needs help;please

hi,
i'm not sure what you mean by partial recovery. do you mean service packs (1 or 2)? if you use someone else's disk, is it hp also? in any case, the pre-loaded pc's such as dell, hp, ibm, etc... have a hardware lock on their o.e.m. (original equipment manufacturer) disk that is tied to the cpu and serial number. the best way to get around this is to buy an o.e.m. cd that is meant for new pc's without hardware lock. you may check http://software outlet.com and make sure the cd that you purchase has this on the titlt:
windows xp sp2 with cd key and c.o.a. (certificate of authenticity). it should solve your problem. the ct is about $79.00. if not, post back, and i can see what you can do to fix it.

how to I remedy this problem since I misplaced my restore disk?

A:NTLDR is compressed, press CTRL, ALT, DEL to restart

hello & welcome to TSF

do you have access to a Widows Xp cd ?

if so let us know and we can give you the instructions to repair

the cd if you can barrow one will have to be the same version that is on your system

as in

Windows Xp Home Ed. sp2 ( if sp2 is installed on your system

or

Windows Xp Peofessional Ed. sp2 ( if sp2 is installed on your system

you will only need it for about an hour so we can pull the files needed from the disk and performe some other functions to get your system stable

'NTLDR is compressed. Press CTRL-ALT-DEL to restart' on a Compaq Presario Desktop running XP.
(My friends computer - I crashed it)

C: is Presario_RP Fat32 (says 'boot')
D: is Presario NTFS

I can access a:, but cannot get it to recognize or format any of several new or used floppies.
I have System Recovery cds 1-7.
From C:\minit\system32\CMD.EXE, I see
'F:\I386\ NTLDR' and 'F:\i386\ntdetect.com' on Disk2,
but I don't know what to do with them.
I was thinking about trying the following, but it seems too easy:

C:\>copy F:\i386\ntldr c:\
C:\>copy F:\i386\ntdetect.com c:\
Please advise, Thanks.

P.S.
I'm currently using the old dusty Win98SE with a CD burner, but no floppy drive. I have downloaded the xpquick packs from bootdisk.com, but not sure if I can use them without the floppy drive.

I am having a very hard time fixing my computer and getting it to even get to the windows desktop. Now, after trying to restore it using the disc it came with, I get the error NTLDR is compressed press alt contrl del to restart, after doing that, the same screen over and over and over....and over again. I need some more like one on one help to get this resolved cause I am not understanding others' forums and fixes

A:NTLDR is compressed press alt contrl del to restart

The first thing you will need is your Windows XP Installation Disk. If you don't have this, the recovery disk that came with your computer might also do the trick.

Boot from your Windows XP original CD by putting it in the CD drive and restarting your computer. Then go to the recovery console (you should be prompted to press R to go to the recovery console). You should then get a command prompt.

Type: (and press Enter after each line)

C:
cd\
attrib -c ntldr

Then restart your computer again. Hopefully that will do the trick.

However, if it still doesn't work, reboot with the CD again, go back into the recovery console, and type :

fixmbr
fixboot

Then restart once more.

Hi all. I have a Linksys WRT54GL v1.1. I'm currently using the DD-WRT v23 SP1 firmware. I see that DD-WRT v24 SP1 is out, but that I'm actually recommended to use the SP2 beta.

Anyways, being a bit of a networking noob, I have one simple question:

Is there any point to me flashing and upgrading my router to the newest firmware builds? I'm experiencing no issues to speak of currently. Hoping there are some guru's here that can let me know what I should do.

A:Upgrading Router Firmware?

Honestly, if you aren't having problems and the new firmware version doesn't provide some sort of feature that you need...I wouldn't suggest it.

I once upgraded the firmware of my router to try to alleviate a problem I was having with dropped packed. It was a Linksys and I was using the Cisco based firmware. Well, once applied, the router rebooted everytime I ran a traceroute command. Which was real bad since my ISP was coming out the next day and would clearly have a case for blaming my router when a simple traceroute caused it to reboot. It took a few hours with Linksys on the phone to determine the problem was in the firmware and they got me back to the old firmware and the problem went away. And I've left it there to this day.

I have a Linksys WAP54G and it's current firmware ver. is 3.01. I want to upgrade it to the latest which is 3.04. Would I need to download the firmware versions in between and install them first before installing the latest? Ex. 3.01>.02>.03>.04

Also what are the risks of upgrading the firmware of your WAP? (I am planning to do this on a wired computer) My dad is having doubts that I'm going to brick it :\

Lastly what steps should I take?
This is what I was about to do before I remembered I have you guys to make sure I'm doing it right :]
Download the firmware
Extract the files from the.zip into a seperate folder
Log onto the web based utility and browse for the file
Click update
And reboot ^_^

Is that right? Am I missing anything?

A:Upgrading firmware questions

Nope, just download the current version.

Your process seems to be correct. It's really pretty easy to update, just make sure you don't disconnect the device or remove the power during the FLASH operation.

Risks? Well, if you nuke it, you can send it back to the manufacturer and they'll restore the FLASH for you.

So I'm thinking my router is going bad, but I want to try a firmware upgrade before buying a new one. When I go to the netgear download site, it gives me instructions for installing the new firmware and among those instructions is:

Write down all settings that you entered when previously configuring. (Usually this includes information such as ISP configuration and wireless security settings.)

I actually have no idea what those settings are because A) it was years ago, and B) someone else did it. How do I find out these settings and get the new firmware to work properly?

A:Upgrading router firmware and don't know info

i have always had netgear routers for wireless. i have mine plugged into a modem. if the router is really old u might be better off with a new one as they are a lot faster. my first one was 11mbs. my new one is 54mbs.if u decide to buy a new one just unplug the one wire from the computer and leave the rest plugged in and shut off the computer and modem and router and shut off the surge protector if its plugged into one. when u get the new router put the plug in that u saved from the old router that went into the computer and turn on the computer. then turn on your modem, then turn on the router. the instructions usually give u the correct order and im going from memory.if its done right u wont even need the install disk as it should find the router automatically.and u should have an internet.then if u want to have a password u can go to the website and add one. hope this helps u.

A:no Ntldr (Ntldr Is Missing)

Firstly, your data on the drive can always be recovered. The problem is you would need access to another computer to download some software. As you do not have access to another computer, there is not much that can be done. Do you have access to a library computer that will let you download and run software and also allow the attachment of a USB flash drive?

If not, you will probably have to give it to a good independent computer shop to recover the info off the drive and possible repair it.

A:The Cdrom drives and floppy drive are inaccessible after upgrading to XP Home

I would go to device manager and uninstall one of the CDROMs. Reboot and see if the P&P reinstalls it correctly. If this works, repeat it for the other drives.

If you don't have anti-virus software installed with a Firewall, then go to McAfee and download stinger.exe to take out about 50 of the most recent viruses and trojans. While you are there get the free system scan. Also get Ad-Aware and Spybot and run them.

Hello all First off I am in no means acquainted with any troubleshooting or fancy thing outside of everyday computer usage so please respond as if you are talking to a dummy I do have fairly decent common sense and Google skill however which has successfully" did missing" "ntldr not to "Windows start is given me enough confidence to try and fix this issue on my own Basically one day I start my computer running Windows XP Professional SP up and get a black screen saying quot We apologize for the inconvenience but Windows did not start successfully A recent hardware or software change might have caused this Start in safe mode Safe mode with networking Safe mode with command prompt Last known good configuration setting most recent setting that worked Start Windows normally quot For "Windows did not start successfully" to "ntldr is missing" a few times I was able "Windows did not start successfully" to "ntldr is missing" to "Windows did not start successfully" to "ntldr is missing" get Windows working with the last two options but before I could dedicate time to fix the issue it became so that none of these options worked and I got caught in a restart cycle with this screen Last things that I can recall that may have caused this Windows Update or CCleaner Registry Fix just something I do sometimes to make sure everything is working nothing was wrong prior I bought an external HDD enclosure with hopes of popping my internal into it and saving my stuff onto my laptop before messing around Oddly in My Computer the drive icons a System Recovery one and my Main one would flash for a few seconds every few minutes and when I d quickly click them it d say they don t exist So I plug my drive back into my tower and go for a System Recovery I know nothing about DOS or commands or all that so following Google I did a quot chkdisk r quot Same problem Went there again did a quot fixmbr quot Same problem Did a quot fixboot quot Seemed to be successful in whatever that does but now when starting I get a quot ntldr is missing quot message I hoped with the boot fixes I could get my internal to work properly on my laptop as an external now The drive icon stays this time but I click it and it appeared to have turned into a GB FAT drive with a few icons with weird characters for names It originally is a GB NTFS drive I read about the ntldr thing online try the whole quot copy h i ntldr c quot thing it doesn t work THAT S WHEN I REALIZE I was using a XP Home CD for the System Recovery instead of an XP Professional which my computer runs Does it even make a difference though Anyway I do have a copied XP Pro CD that I popped in thinking I can just overwrite the boot files and all that stuff again and it should be OK but when my drive shows up in the menu to select to repair or install etc it s just that GB little FAT partition and not my entire drive which was originally an NTFS Furthermore I can t even get into a DOS menu with this CD so that I can do those commands again or copy ntldr because there isn t really a repair option When I hit F at the beginning to quot System Recovery quot it asks for an Auto System Recovery Diskette or something which I don t have - I don t even have a floppy drive So with all that said All I really want to do is get my files off my internal and onto my laptop but it reads my internal as that small GB partition with messed up files What s the issue here Do I need to repair the boot files and all that with this diskette thing that I guess comes with an authentic copy of WinXP Pro My laptop runs the exact same OS as my desktop the one with the problems and I was thinking is there a way I can copy the appropriate boot and ntldr files and maybe put them onto a USB or something Can anyone outline where to get them from if so Also I was thinking because my XP Pro CD is copied for home use only can t find the original is it possible it wouldn t have t... BTW if it IS in fact possible to copy certain files from my laptop's OS, I just realized I can probably just copy those files into the desktop internal (when plugged in as an external) instead of going through the whole DOS thing? But keep in mind, that's the small 3GB partition, so I don't know if that would even work. Unless putting those boot files on that small partition, will help open up the rest of the drive. Not sure how that works.

Hi tattie, welcome to TSG.

Did you by chance just download an update from Microsoft?

What does the error message on the floppp controller say the problem is?

Are the data cds you are trying to read originals or burnt copies?

So, I have searched around and have had no luck thus far finding out what exactly happened to my CDROM/DVD drive. It had been working fine for some time and suddenly, it just doesn't work/show up any more in the Computer area. Nor does it show up in device manager.

My specs are as follows:

Windows Vista Home Premium 64x with Service Pack 1

Intel Core2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40GHz
4 GB RAM

ACPI x64-based PC

As for what the CDROM/DVD is, I am not too sure at the moment, I will be looking it up soon. The weird thing is, I am pretty sure it shows up in the BIOS.

If anyone might have any clues as to what is going on, or want to walk me through something to help come up with more ideas, lemme know. : /

A:CDROM/DVD missing...

Hi Boxigan, and welcome to Vista Forums.

Let's start with the basics. Check all of you cable connections to the drive to make sure that they are secure. Check to see if the drive appears to have it's flashing power led on when hitting the eject button on the drive, or during bootup. Double check the BIOS settings to see if it is there and the correct SATA, RAID, or ATA/IDE type of connection is selected for it.

If everything seems to check out, then see if the drive may have been set to hidden somehow.

Drive - Hide or Unhide

Hope this helps for now,
Shawn

Hello again:

I have been trying to make a data CD, a music CD, a data DVD, and a music DVD, unsuccessfully!!
My software program says the burn was successful, however, when I put the CD/DVD in to see what's on it, not only is there nothing on it a little window tells me to insert a disc! I have two CD players and I have tried them both, one my OS recognizes and it shows up in the list of items under "My computer." The other one my computer doesn't even see, but it also says "burn successful." One is a CD-RW drive, the other is a DVD-RW drive. I have a Dell Dimension 2400. Can you help me find my CD players??

Thank you,
Looking4trth

A:Missing CDROM

Hi Looking4trth and welcome to TSF

If I understand your post, you have two burners, one CDRW and a DVDRW. Only one of them is visible in mycomputer with a drive letter.
Did you put the Successfully burned CD or DVD back into the one that you used to burn with and try to view it there, or are you moving it to the other one? I'm thinking the one that said the burn was successful must be working and is the one seen in My computer. If this is true, try this:
Go to the Device Manager and see if they are both listed there and note any yellow or red exclimation points by the cdrom devices. If there is a yellow or red mark, try downloading and installing the newest device drivers for that CD or DVD rom.
If this don't work, post back and we'll try something else.

Hi all, we are unable to see the CDROM on an NT4 server. The whispher around the office is that it was removed form registry by a disgruntled tech some time ago.

Firstly, how can we check registry to see if it has been removed (what are we looking for)

and Secondly, what registry setting do we need to create to get it back (if that's the actual problem)

Any ideas would be appreciated....

Thanks in advance.

A:Missing CDROM

I'm not sure of what registry entry you have to look for but if you get the drivers from the internet for that CD ROM and re-install it, it should re-create the registry entry.

You should then be able to see the CDROM once the server has been restarted.

I hope that helps.

It sounds like you have a jumpering problem. Are you using an 80 conductor IDE cable? If so, both drives should be jumpered for Cable Select. If you're not using an 80 conductor IDE cable, you have to jumper one drive as Master, and the other as slave. I think this should resolve your issues.

Click here: http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm to get LSP-Fix.
You may not need it, but go ahead and download it.

Go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall New.Net (NewDotNet).
If it will not uninstall, or is not listed there go here: http://www.newdotnet.com/removal.html
and follow procedure 4 to remove it.

If you lose your internet connection after running the New.Net Uninstaller, Run the LSP Fix, and click Finish. Don't do anything else!

That should restore the internet connection.

Hello, thanks for having me. I'm in a bit of a pickle at the moment with my other computer, and I was hoping someone could possibly help.

On the non-working PC, I was running Windows XP SP-2, and I was upgrading to SP-3 when it restarted, and came up with the NTLDR is missing error. This just so happens to be an error I'm familiar with, but this is where my problem starts: For some reason my CD-ROM is not reading the Windows XP Reinstallation disc. I'm thinking the CD reader finally died or something, because it IS a pretty old machine.

Now, I'm aware that I can use the XP disc to fix the missing NTLDR problem or even to reformat if I absolutely had to. My question is this: would there be any other relatively easy fixes to the NTLDR? Should I try having my CD-ROM replaced? What are my other options?

Thanks

the ntldr on your HD is either corrupt or missing. Have you done any deleting, or editing of the C drive? When your finished booting you can copy the ntldr from the dvd to the HD. It goes in C:\, or c:\boot (which may be hidden)

hope this helps and let us know if you need help with any of this

Hi....

Have a HP XE748 with Celeron processor. It came with Windows ME
I wanted to upgrade to XP Home and the guys at Circuit City said it would be too much of a memory hog and told me to get Windows 2000 if I could find it.
I tried loading it and did an overwrite to the ME system files. Now all I get is a message saying "NTLDR is missing" press any key to continue. I don't have a boot disk for ME but do have the recovery disks for ME. Get the same message when I try to do a recver install from them. I've been searching around and saw bootdisk.com has a generic boot disk for ME....
Any ideas besides reformating the hard drive?

A:NTLDR is missing :(

Hi

Sorry to hear that your system is unbootable now. Can you describe the exact error message you are receiving ? . Also post the full spec and model number of your PC in next reply.

Bleeping Computer DOES NOT recommend the use of registry cleaners/optimizers for several reasons:
Registry cleaners are extremely powerful applications that can damage the registry by using aggressive cleaning routines and cause your computer to become unbootable.
The Windows registry is a central repository (database) for storing configuration data, user settings and machine-dependent settings, and options for the operating system. It contains information and settings for all hardware, software, users, and preferences. Whenever a user makes changes to settings, file associations, system policies, or installed software, the changes are reflected and stored in this repository. The registry is a crucial component because it is where Windows "remembers" all this information, how it works together, how Windows boots the system and what files it uses when it does. The registry is also a vulnerable subsystem, in that relatively small changes done incorrectly can render the system inoperable. For a more detailed explanation, readUnderstanding The Registry.
Not all registry cleaners are created equal. There are a number of them available but they do not all work entirely the same way. Each vendor uses different criteria as to what constitutes a "bad entry". One cleaner may find entries on your system that will not cause problems when removed, another may not find the same entries, and still another may want to remove entries required for a program to work.
Not all registry cleaners create a backup of the registry before making changes. If the changes prevent the system from booting up, then there is no backup available to restore it in order to regain functionality. A backup of the registry is essential BEFORE making any changes to the registry.
Improperly removing registry entries can hamper malware disinfection and make the removal process more difficult if your computer becomes infected. For example, removing malware related registry entries before the infection is properly identified can contribute to system instability and even make the malware undetectable to removal tools.
The usefulness of cleaning the registry is highly overrated and can be dangerous. In most cases, using a cleaner to remove obsolete, invalid, and erroneous entries does not affect system performance but it can result in "unpredictable results".
