Changing the location of the 'offline files' folder?

Q: Changing the location of the 'offline files' folder?

is this possible?

I have a 4gb drive that has windows on and when i make a network file available offline, by default it is being saved to this drive. What I want is for the offline files to be saved on the 250gb hard disk I have in the computer.

Preferred Solution: Changing the location of the 'offline files' folder?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

As far as I know there is no way to change the location of the Offline Files.
But if you find any more info do let me know.

Dear All,

I am currently setting up my new machine with Vista business 64-bit, and am aware that vista creates 2 folders for x64 and x86 software.
However i have a fairly lean disk partition (80gb) for vista and want to keep this drive free for windows and virtual memory/scratch disks.
This means that all software needs to be loaded on another partition or on my second hard disk.
Is this possibe?
Do i have to create 2 new program file folders to mimic the existing setup? i.e say for eg. d:\program files(x86) and d:\program files..??
Your help is appreciated.

A:Changing location of Program Files folder(s)

Hi Farhad,

Welcome to the forum.

You will not be able change or move the locations for the programs included in Vista. (EX: Windows Mail, Sidebar, Firewall, etc...)

You will not need to create two folders on your other partition for a 32 bit and 64 bit Programs folder. When you install a program, just make sure you change the installation location for it to your other partition.

Hope this helps,

Hello 7forums. This is my first post on this great forum, so hello to everybody!
I want to know how can I change the location of TEMP folder to delete manually those files which remain there and loads the memory of my PC.
And I got another question: what to do immediately after installing Windows? I mean all the stuff like tweaking and do those "finesse things", all those secrets.
Thank you!

A:Changing location of TEMP folder.

Welcome to the Forums.

Most programs will use Environment Variables to determine where the user wants temp files. The screen shot shows how to set the variables TMP and TEMP.

i have a computer with 2 users on it.
i want to share the scans in this computer to other computers on the network.

instead of sharing each user pictures folder.
i created a folder on the local drive D: called SCAN
and shared it.

now i want that the scanned files will go there automatically
but didn't found a way to do this.

how can i change it? thanks.

A:changing scan folder location

What're you scanning from? This seems to specifically be a software/hardware related question relating to your scanner.

Would play around with the software in the first instance to see where its going or alternative consult your manual/google

Hey Guys,

I've got a problem getting offline folder permissions to stick after restarts in our domain. Here's what I do:

Go to MMC>shared folders>shares>C$ (as an example)>properties>offline settings> and then I change "only files and folders users specify..." to "All files...". Apply and done.

It works like a champ for what I'm trying to do (enable Restore Previous Versions of files to actually work- I learned that RPV fix from another thread here at seven), but after each restart the settings are restored to default. I'm assuming there's a group policy I can implement that'll auto-set those permissions permanently but I can't find any 'offline' shared folder permissions options anywhere. Thanks for any help.

A:GP for permanently changing shared folder offline permissions?

Sorry, forgot to mention the environment. We're running 100% Windows 7 workstations and an SBS 2011 server.

The whole point of my question is to ultimately enable a WORKING 'restore previous versions' feature for each workstation across the domain. As far as I can see, after much testing, with the setting I'm trying to permanently enable turned on, restore points actually do back up files for RPV... and with it off, RPV is totally useless on every workstation.

A:changing user/local folder location

Is this for a backup? Because if it's not, you shouldn't move these folders from there current location, there's a reason why there hidden.

Also, even if you do move this folder, Windows 7 would recreate it the next time you logon. Unless you create a shortcut to the new location of these folders in your current AppData folder.

And you can move the folders but it would require you to do so in such a way that you did not use Windows, because that is the service that is using the files that you are trying to move. The computer would have to be either logged off or shut down when the files were being moved, which would require another operating system or even computer.

I've managed to change my "Program Files" location so it is my E:\ drive, and when I install 64bit applications it automatically wants to install to E:\Program Files (which is a good thing)
However, I can't seem to make "Program Files (x86)" change too. I've uninstalled everything from there, but when I install 32 bit programs it wants by default to install to C:\Program Files (x86) , instead of E:\Program Files (x86).

How can I change the default install location of 32 bit applications too? Here is what the registry page looks like that I changed everything in:
(HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE > Microsoft > Windows > CurrentVersion)

I'm running Windows 7 64 bit if you didn't realise already

This should be an easy one - I'm just a newbie.

How can the "default" save location be set for files?

Background: The default location was set to a network drive which I dont use.

I tried to change it to my frequently used network drive but it doesn't seem quite right. Not sure of the "bigger picture".

Here's what I did...

Left-clicked START menu.

Right clicked on Properties of Top Right Corner default.

Changed the properties on the "General" and "Location" tabs to point to the folder I'd to be the default.

On one of my mapped drives, the folder is no longer displayed, however and the mapped drive that goes directly to it, it appears in the same location.

I'm just not sure what happened when I made these changes. I had no intention of "moving" the folder.

What does this feature actually do?

I was reading in the tutorials about changing default location of files and folders and not sure if I understand it correctly. I would like to take my Windows 7 Library and move it from my C: drive to my HDD which is D: C: is my SSD 80gb that has my windows 7 on it and D: drive is a 500gb HDD that I use for storage. I use iTunes and the music and movies take up way to much space on the C: drive. In the past I have tried installing iTunes on D: but all music and video's went to those folders on C: If I can relocate the Libraries, my space problem would be helped greatly.

A:Question regarding changing default location of Music and video files

Hello Jack,

Yep, you have it confused just a bit.

You would not be able to move a library since a library is just a collection of folders.

If you like, you could include a folder (new folder if needed) that's located where you want to save the files at in a library. Afterwards, set that folder as the default save location of the library. This way anything you save into the library will get saved to the folder by default.

Hope this helps,

Recently a coworker was trying to CUT/PASTE files from their My Documents folder to another location. During the procedure our file server crashed and shutdown. Their My Documents folder is a re-directed and synchronized folder.

I was able to restore the users entire home drive from the previous nights backup to another location. To date the user has been working from this secondary location but wishes to have all the files moved back to their My Documents so that synchronization can occur for offline access.

I am unsure of how to go about doing this safely.

I'm thinking that I should re-initialize the users Offline Cache and Database first, delete what is in My Documents now, and then copy the restored data back to My Documents. Then, at that point in time re-enable offline files and perform a sync.

Does anyone have any thoughts?

Our users "my documents" folders are set up for redirection to \\ourserver\users

We have an XP based machine ( machine X ) that was used by person A, each time they logged off it synchronized as expected.

However machine X is now used by another user B.

Whenever user B logs off user A's offline files still keep synchronising, have deleted all the files from the offline folder I still cannot see a way of stopping user A's files and starting the new user B's files sync.

User A's files were accounting type files and are sensitive files that should not be viewed by others, however by still sync to the offline files folder they can be easily viewed.

Any thoughts as how I can stop this and re-direct the new users files to sync as I need to release this pc for general use.

A:Offline files / folder sync

You need to unmark the old users' folders for offline use, apply, reboot and make sure that the machine can see the domain and be made happy on that front, log in as the new user and then mark those new folders for offline use.

A:Missing Offline Files tab in folder options

You need to ensure that Fast User Switching is disabled:

Also, make sure you are enabling offline files on the computer that is accessing the network share, the one that does not have a copy of the files locally.

I tried searching for "offline" in the forum and scanned through the 250 odd titles that came up but could not find reference to relocating the offline files folder. I frequently take an image of the system drive as a backup but, with an ever increasing offline folder (windows\csc), this is getting unworkable so I want to move the folder to my data drive (D:\).

I've tried using a symbolic link to a folder on the C drive (as I've successfully done with the OneDrive folder) but win10 seems to object and stops working.

Surprisingly, with google there's loads of references to doing this with previous versions of windows but I can't find anything Win10 specific. Does anybody know of a reliable way of relocating the csc folder?

I am thinking about changing the default Windows folder c Windows to another location in particular to another drive I first thought that to changing c:\Windows from folder windows default another location it should be possible just by changing the values in the registry for windir and systemroot and making a robocopy of the windows folder to the new location However as in order to access these variables in the registry the hives of the registry which themselves are located in the system config folder within the Windows folder need to be accessed at startup I guess that at least the contents of the config folder should not be moved at all Do you know whether it would work to move the whole changing windows folder from default c:\Windows to another location quot windows quot folder except the config folder to the new location making if changing windows folder from default c:\Windows to another location necessary a junction config folder at the destination windows system folder pointing to the original config folder and making the changes in the registry to point to the new location If not do you maybe know how can this be done Thank you very much in advance

A:changing windows folder from default c:\Windows to another location

Why do you want to do that? The Windows folder (and its contents) is essential for the OS to function correctly, and the OS expects to find it in the root of the system drive (C:\). In theory, it could be moved, but that would involve making numerous changes to the Registry to ensure that the data stored there points to the correct location. As the number of changes required even on a clean install is of the order of 5,000+ entries, some of which will require changes in permissions and other security issues, it really is a non-starter especially when you realise that a simple mistake in changing (or, indeed, failing to change) any one of those keys could potentially leave your system as effective as a big door stop with the only option being a reinstallation.

In short, for practical purposes, the answer has got to be that it cannot be done.

I had a virus that set all my folders/files to hidden and read only. I fixed most except c:\386. On my next reboot with chkdsk, chkdsk froze. Trying to repair by copying c\i386 from original cd failed and I assume attributes are to blame. I rebooted to command line and tried 'attrib -h -read-only c:\i386' but it did not do anything. Trying to copy i386 still gives me 'access denied' which I assume because it it's read only. Any advice of either how to properly set attributes on i386 or any other solution to successfully boot?

A:Changing folder/files attributes form command line

Go into Windows Explorer and on your menu click Tools, then Folder Options, then the View Tab. About the 10th item down, check *Show hidden files and folders*. This will make any hidden files visible again. You can also select to *Show System Files* if you want. once you refresh Explorer, you'll see any hidden folders. Right click on them to change their attributes. This way might be easier so you can visually see anything that was hidden. You can go back to the menu and opt to Hide System Files again.

If you want to do command line:
Attrib (then add the arguments) -H -R
-H (removes hidden attribute)
-R (removes Read Only attribute)

I have a boot drive which is 250gb (My C drive). I have Win 7 and some apps on it.
I have installed Steam on my other hard drive. So far most games have been cooperative and install their folders close to Steam!

However, one game in particular (Empire Total War) has installed one of its folders in "C:\Users\XYZ\AppData\Roaming\The Creative Assembly".

From experience from my old PC, I know this folder (The Creative Assembly) can grow to close to 20gb in a matter of a year. I don't want that to happen and therefore thought of relocating, moving, or redirecting this folder (The Creative Assembly) to another location.

How do I do that and is that recommended? (I could simply go ahead and do this right now, but I would rather get some expert opinions first before any instabilities in my system).

Thank you.

A:Move a folder within the appdata/roaming folder to another location?

If you attempt to move the folder any programs dependant on that folder would have to know where to look for it, if you do attempt it i would leave the original in situ and copy/paste to new drive then attempt to redirect program if it fails then you still have original

Im not familiar with steam but as long as you can redirect the games save file path to new location if you have that option then i dont see why you cant do it

I have 2 computers on a peer-to-peer network that use offline folders. I had to change the network-id on both computers and I had to change the name of the computer that the files are sync'd to.
So now when the computer trys to sync, it's trying to sync to the wrong computer name. (has the wrong path now). It use to sync to '\\PC-A\folder\'. But now the PC name is PC-B. So how do I change it to look for '\\PC-B\folder\' instead of '\\PC-A\folder\'

How can I fix this? Do I have to redo the whole process? Or is there a way to just go in and change the computer name in the path so it connects to the right location.

There are allot of files involved. I would hate to have to set it up all over again as it would be a big and long process.

Everything automatically downloads to Program Files (x86), and I don't have a problem with that. It's a game. The base game and all four expansions install to (x86) but the file I need to install with the game installs automatically to Program Files and does not offer the option to change where it is installed. Since it goes to Program Files, it says the game's not installed, because the game is only in (x86).

Is there a roundabout way of controlling where the installer (it's an .exe file) installs the file?

InstallShield Wizard pops up, does its thing and the next pop up tells me the game isn't installed, while I have the disk in the drive and know that it works.

A:Changing location of install?

Usually installers give you an option to change directory via custom or advanced option. If not you could just move the folder manually after install.

I have changed the default location of my user files to a partition, but for some reason a few of the folders duplicated and I don't know why.

Look here and you will see what fodlers have duplicated:

Is this normal?

Another thing I want to know is regarding backs up my folders and C Drive.

When I make a copy of my C Drive with Acronis, or create a back up with Windows back up will these folders be copied or will I need to back them up separately?

I also cannot delete the spare file as it says I don't have permission, and I can't seem to get permision as it can't display who the owner of the file is.

A:Changing default location questions.

They are junction points and don't really exist, they just point to a location and they're best left alone, don't try to remove them.

You will have to create an image/backup of those as an image of just the OS will not include anything that is on another partition unless it's included in the image when it's created.

Is there another way to change it, i tried searching for the documents folder but it doesn't come up. picture: imgur: the simple image sharer

A:Changing Documents location and Personalization?

Via file explorer, find regedit.exe (in C:\windows\) and run it (or just use start key +r, then enter regedit). The documents location is stored in HKEY_Current_User\software\Microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\user shell folders. Modify Personal from 'C:' to whatever new location you want. Editing the registry can be dangerous if not done right so either make a restore point or save the registry beforehand (google for guides to do that if you don't know how).

An advice though. There is no sane reason to change the documents location from its default to c: and I do not recommend it at all. It is a nice option when you have to reinstall windows (because of a crash or whatever), since you can separate the OS files from your data files BUT... you have to choose a location different from your windows main partition (C: I assume for you) so either to another partition (D:\My Documents\, E:\My Documents\, etc..), or even safer to another disk entirely. I also hope you are not thinking of using the root of C (C:\) for storing any of your personal data, it is a very bad idea, folders are there for a reason.

I have an SSD, and have changed my programfiles directory to my D drive.

That said, there is an install of WMP12 in my c/programfiles x86 folder, and one on my d/programfiles folder.

The one on D apparently is my default one, and when I install a codec pack, such as the CCCP, it will not work. It won't play media that it should be able to.

However if I manually started the wmp12 file in my c/program files x86, it works as it should.

I need to figure out how to either
*TOTALLY move everything, including pointers from C:\Program Files\(x86) to D:\Program Files.. I can't move most of them because I need permission from trusted installer.
*Make it so that C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe is the only, and the default windows media player.

Any ideas?

A:Can not use codec packages with WMP after changing location..

You can not change the programs files directory to point to another hdd. Instead make a folder in the D: drive name it Programs, or apps then when you install a program select custom then have it install in that folder in the D: drive.
Windows media player can not be moved it is native to Windows.

There are also important files which Windows needs in the Programs Files folder do not move those. Just uninstall the programs you want except Windows essientall programs, then reinstall the 3rd party programs select custom install change the target to D:\Foldername.

The reason your programs are not working when you moved them is because the the orginal target which is C:\Program Files\Software name is no longer valid.

Another way of making them work is by changing the target path by right click in the .exe file of the program then changing the target path mainly the shortcut.

Have a computer where the integrated SATA controllers failed, they do not have a backup system which allows the installation of "different/additional" storage controllers or "dissimilar" machines.
i've installed another SATA Controller, and the computer is able to boot of the drive, but not successfully load Windows and
runs through the various "repair" options but fails.
I've scanned the hard drive with various hard drive tools, including virus scans, the drive passes.
Prior to Vista and Win7, it was possible to manually edit files within the OS to manually include drivers and change drives, partitions, etc..etc..
I am attempting to use another backup system, to attempt to image the existing drive, and use their restore process to see if I can insert the additional controller drivers.
How might I accomplish this with Win7 if this doesn't work?
Thank you!

A:Changing controller on an existing, but offline Windows 7 64 installation

It is possible if you have the unpacked Windows 7 driver files of the current storage controller. What you need to do is to boot from the "Windows 7" setup DVD, System repair CD or from a "WinPE 3.0" and use the DISM command to inject the storage controller driver . Hello all!

I was always wondering,

Is there some way that I can change the default save location of things? For instance.. Games... Virtual machines.. I want JUST documents to be in documents rather then a bunch of BS stuff. If I make a folder in documents like "BS Folder" and put everything I don't want in there then it confuses the software.

Is there anyway I can change something or work around it so when I click Documents in the start menu a select folder pops up that is full of stuff I want it to be full of.

Hopefully that makes sense..

As you can see in the photo.. I want stuff like that out of my Documents and somewhere else.

the first question that ' you cannot change the location " Nathan"' , do you log out when you change the location under Michael adminstrator.
As for another question, did you try with another file name. I mean you can try with different file name, like C..\Nathan\Documents\Tutorial
Hope my answer can help you a bit. Thanks!

I have been fighting this problem ever Public stop my changing will Windows not network to location since Windows Every time I try to access my computer from another device on my network I find I am unable to connect I go into the Ethernet settings and see that Make This PC Discoverable is turned off If I switch it on go back and then immediately open the settings again it Windows will not stop changing my network location to Public is switched off again When I look at my Network and Sharing Center my network is set to Public network The only way I've been able to successfully set it to Private and keep the Make This PC Discoverable setting turned on is to Windows will not stop changing my network location to Public change the Category setting in the registry for my network to It works and I'm able to do whatever it was I wanted to do over the network But then the next time I want to access my PC from my LAN again same thing It is driving me CRAZY I have tried all the suggestions I can find most of which are mentioned here Network Location - Set to Private or Public in Windows Nothing prevents it from going back to Public again after a while This is incredibly frustrating as it completely defeats the purpose of having a local area network I am very surpised that I haven't seen more of an outcry about this on the forums so I'm starting to suspect it's only happening to me but this is on at least two different PCs across installs of Windows and Can anyone help me

A:Windows will not stop changing my network location to Public

Sorry, probably no one has a solution as it is an ongoing problem with multiple comps and you have googled the heck out of it.

And, yes, it does sound like you may be unique!

So, we are left with some troubleshooting tips.

In really tricky situations like this you need to try to isolate sub systems by testing them independently. And, don't forget, we are dealing with odds!

Firstly, your computer(s). On the face of it the odds are in favour of it not being them as the same really weird condition is unlikely to have got embedded in multiple comps and multiple OS's. But, it would still be good to put one of them onto someone else's network to see what happens.

Next sub system has to be your network setup. Describe in detail how it is configured and what is on it. What does share properly? Is it possibly a network issue rather than a computer one? Can you simplify it to try it out?

This would be my approach but we are all a bit limited by our not knowing the details.

I have a network drive, which I set up to save a copy of a folder for offline use using the instructions here:
Working with network files when you are offline - Windows Help

I am not able to find any option for setting the drive to work online or work offline. I did manage to set it up to work offline yesterday, but forgot how. Now, I cannot find any work online or work offline button. Is it in a different place in 10?

A:work offline / work online button with network location

Reading the net, it appears that this is a pretty buggy implementation of working with network files offline. I was able to effectively use the offline files feature on another win10 machine. When I unplugged the ethernet cable, I could work with the offline files, and then when I plugged it back in, the computer went online and I synced the files. Back on the original machine, I turned off the 'enable offline files' option, rebooted, turned on the 'enable offline files' button, and rebooted. After this, the machine was still working offline. It said that the user had chosen to work offline (which was true at an earlier point). But there is no option anywhere to work online.

I followed the instructions to reinitialize the offline files cache as described here: How To Reinitialize The Offline Cache in Windows 7 . I found it elsewhere, and the general instructions are repeated on the internet in various places. This enabled the laptop to use the cached files online again. However, I still cannot manually get into and out of the 'work offline' mode. If anybody has any ideas, I would be grateful. If there is a registry value that would put things into and out of the 'work offline' mode, I could at least write a batch file to do this.

I was hoping to be able to change the default icon for "My Videos" folder. I have renamed it to "Downloads" to use as my download folder. I was hoping to be able to do this without creating a desktop.ini file. I'm hoping it's a registry entry, or failing that, I could change the icon in the dll, but a registry entry would be a lot easier.

Also, the "Recent" folder is never used, and I'd like to hide it from the user\recent list.

I included a picture to make it easier to understand what I'm talking about. I edited out the user name for privacy reasons.

I work in a network environment where the user cannot attach any kind of devices through any on the ports so that wipes out the ability to create my own back up using hardware The disc burning ability is also switched off I am on a Windows XP Service Pack machine I started work at a news site Offline Folder when there was an idea to restructure all the folders to make them more manageable While this was happening somebody renamed a folder but it turned out it deleted the sub-folders which wiped out months of research and weeks of personal work It turns out there is no backup of the network share drive Offline Folder This of course pointed out a majot flaw in our recovery plan However the network guys are working on a way to solve this problem I want to make sure this doesn t happen again at my level and looked for a way to synchronize folders between the share and the local drive What I found was the offline folder option which allows you to work on the files if the network goes down After this lengthy explanation I want to ask if somebody wouldn t mind explaining how the offline folders work If the share drive folder or files get wiped out do I have a local copy on my machine Offline Folder If it does not work this way how could I accomplish this with the restricted environment Any help would be appreciated nbsp

Every time I move a file from one folder or directory to another...the destination folder shows the date and time of the current activity and the original file creation date/time is lost ? Is there a way to move/copy files from one folder to another...or one drive to another...without having the destination file's properties updated to the current date and time ?

A:Can you keep file dates from changing when moving folder to folder

If you move within folders on the same drive the date and time are preserved. If you move from one drive to another the create date changes.

A google search indicates RoboCopy can do this (or at least I think that's what it was saying).

I have a nailed up VPN between 2 sites the remote site is connected to the main and is joined to the domain.

I have set the workstation up so that when the user logs on and off the my documents synchronises back to the Main site. since there are more and more documents in this folder its becoming very slow. when the user clicks on my documents its taking around 15 seconds to open, i have checked all the dns and ip settings and its as it was originally when it was quick, is there a way to make the folder offline without terminating the VPN link so that they can work on it and then when they log off, it syncs back to the server.

Many thanks

Anyone know how to reformat the offline cache?

Mine got corrupt and I am unable to use offline files right now...
Relevancy 51.6%

My offline files seems to work offline all the time, even when it shows me being online. I sync most of my business files to my laptop for working at home at night.

When I edit a file from my Win 7 (pro, 64-bit) laptop, then go to edit it again, I get the version I had changed, but no one else does. This is causing huge difficulty, because my employees will start working in a sales forecast spreadsheet after I reconnect to the network and supposedly sync, but they don't get the latest version. Even doing a manual sync seems to make no difference.

It seems that if someone else edits something on the network share, it does update to my laptop, but when I update something, it doesn't transfer so that everyone else can use it?

Where should we begin looking?

A:Offline files doen't update files changed locally

It may help if you enable transparent caching which can be enabled through Group Policy. I'm not sure this is the same problem but it seems to apply to your problem.

Windows 7 introduces a new feature for Offline Files & Folders called “Transparent Caching”. With transparent caching, the first time a user opens a file in a shared folder, Windows 7 reads the file from the server and then stores it in a cache on the computer’s hard disk drive.

The second and subsequent times a user reads the same file, Windows 7 retrieves the cached file from disk instead of reading it from the server. To provide data integrity, Windows 7 always contacts the server to ensure the cached copy is up-to-date.

The cache is never accessed if the server is unavailable and updates to the file are always written directly to the server. Transparent Caching is not enabled by default and can be enabled through Group Policy at Computer configuration | Administrative Templates | Network | Offline Files | Enable Transparent Caching.

Our web application encountered a problem.

After installation of a security update for Internet Explorer 8 (KB3038314), the system displays ?Navigation to webpage was cancelled? on a separate pop-up dialog window after clicking several menu items in its main menu. The expected behaviour is that the
content or screen represented by the menu item will be displayed in the designated frame.
Upon clicking a new menu item which will trigger replacing the frame's content URL, the expectation is for the system to be able to replace the value of the frame's location.href property. Upon debug inspection, this is "Permission Denied".

The following vulnerabilities are addressed by the patch and have direct implications on IE8:

 Multiple Memory Corruption
 Address Space Layout Randomization (ALSR) Bypass , Remote Code Execution

*Is it possible that the patch may have affected accessing the URL property of the frame??
Any ideas would help. Thanks.

I am troubleshooting a problem with an eSATA hard drive that causes Windows to freeze if the drive is plugged in at powerup. I started Windows in safe mode, and saw that the last driver loaded before freeze is C:\Windows\system32\drivers\disk.sys. However, when I view this folder in Windows Explorer, there are very few files in the folder, and disk.sys is not there. Question: where are drivers stored in 64-bit Windows 7, or why am I not seeing them in the above folder? I am showing hidden files, folders, and drives in Windows Explorer, so I should be able to view them if they are there.

Hi mw4man, and welcome to the Vista Forums

The "Documents and Settings" folder from XP has been replaced by the "Users" folder in Vista

Hope this helps you find your files

If you know the name of the file you are looking for you can search for the file by typing the name into the search bar at the bottom of the start menu
