Taskbar Quick Launch puzzle

Q: Taskbar Quick Launch puzzle

I normally use a single-height taskbar. But everytime I add the Quick Launch toolbar to the taskbar, the taskbar doubles in height. I tried grabbing the dividers and sliding them, but they don't move. Any advice? Thanks!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi All

Whenever I restart the computer or something goes wrong with explorer.exe and it has to close down, the items in QL all revert back to alphabetical order. I have it set up so the ones I use more often, are displayed and the rest are hidden away in the extension. Is there a way I can 'lock' these items in place?

A:Quick Launch in the Taskbar

hello, I had this problem before also, Right click on your taskbar near the quick launch icons and scroll down till you see "lock the taskbar", it worked for me.
also if you have alot of icons in your QL grab the dividing line with your mouse and move it to the right a little and you should be able to see more.

In Vista I was able to put Folders into the Quick Launch bar but with 7 I can only pin the programme icons and not a folder. Is there any mods about that would enable me to pin folders to the Taskbar?

Many thanks

Hi to all,
I am having a problem with this doggone windows 8 and I had gone to another help site to fix the problem. I had almost got the problem solved and lo and behold I cant access that site anymore. I will give the name of the site and the message I get if you need it.

I was having a problem with my quick launch on the taskbar like in Vista. I had it fixed except the quick launch is now on the right and I don?t have the little arrows that you use to put stuff on the quick launch. Also I don?t have the desktop icon anymore. Thanks in advance for any help.

Hello,

My friend is coming from XP and has his quick launch toolbar on the top of the desktop and his taskbar on the bottom.

I know there is a hack to (kind of) enable the quick launch menu, but is it possible to get it separate from the taskbar?

He would like to avoid using something like a dock program. See the attached pic for an example.

Thanks,

Today I noticed that there is a small problem in the height of the Win7 taskbar if I select Large icons in the Quick Launch toolbar. (before I always used small icons)

In the Large view the Win7 taskbar doesn't fill the space vertically but is aligned to the top leaving some empty space at the bottom.
Please check the attached screenshots to better understand what I mean.

I know is really a small detail, but maybe someone knows a way around it anyway^^

Thanks!

Hello Karadeniz, and welcome to Eight Forums.

All shortcuts in Quick Launch are saved in the hidden folder path below. You could just back up the contents of this folder, then copy them back into this same folder below to restore them.

C:\Users\(user-name)\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch
In addition, if you like, you might look at this tutorial below to make it easy to add items into Quick Launch.

Somehow taskbar launch sorted Quick disabled and my quick launch taskbar got disabled I right-clicked on the Taskbar selected Toolbars and rechecked Quick Launch It came back but all of the icons were sorted alphabetically I had them arranged in groups for easier access Is there any way to restore it the way it was I have Carbonite doing continuous backups but I think it's mainly data files I don't think it backs up system files I also have the Carbonite Mirror Image Quick launch taskbar disabled and sorted backup on a USB drive so I should have a complete system backup with checkpoints every few days going back for over a year I've never restored anything from that backup so I don't know if there's a way to get a single file and even if there is which file I would need to get I'd appreciate any help If not no biggie I'll just manually rearrange them But then I'd like to know where the settings are stored so I can make a backup in case this happens again Thanks Now I'll try to describe the unusual events just before this happened Maybe someone can tell me why it happened I came back to the computer after being away for an hour or two On the screen there was a message from the Windows Update facility telling me Quick launch taskbar disabled and sorted that updates had been applied and my machine would be restarted in minutes It had a countdown timer going This was an unusual message because I have the Windows Automatic Updates set to the second option Download updates but let me choose when to install I ve never gotten Quick launch taskbar disabled and sorted this message before I always get a little Taskbar pop-up telling that there are updates ready to install I check the settings and somehow it had gotten changed to the first option Automatic I changed it back to the second option I clicked on the Restart Later button Of course that only made the annoying message go away for a few minutes So I closed what I was working on and rebooted the machine When it came back up I got a pop-up from the Taskbar telling me that updates were available for download As an aside it never seems to download them until I say to but whatever I thought this was odd since it just told me that updates had been applied I clicked on the update icon and got a dialog telling me that there were updates to apply Anyway I clicked on the button to install them While that was running I got a message from Malware Bytes It said it was unable to perform a rootkit scan and it was probably because of root record activity I figured that was the update The updates took about minutes and then I rebooted the machine When it came back up the quick launch toolbar was gone Any clues

Try using this http://windowsxp.mvps.org/tweakui.htm and see if you can use the additional settings provided on the taskbar features when you decided to manually rearrange them. You can also create a system restore point to gain access to a date when everythingwas working fine as a safety precaution.

A:Help with adding quick launch and taskbar items

Right click on All Programs and select explore. Expand “Programs” and drag or paste a shortcut for the program you want to run at startup into the “Startup” folder.

You can just drag icons from your desktop to the quick launch.

To add stuff to the system tray (which is what I think you want to do) you can get one of dozens of freeware tray managers. This one looks like it will do what you want: http://www.gregorybraun.com/TrayTool.html If you don’t like that have a look through this list: http://www.nonags.com/nonags/launch32.html

You might have a look at RunIt. You just right click on the top of the screen and a menu drops down. You can put anything you want in the menu. It is a lot easier than looking through all of the icons in the tray: http://www.webattack.com/get/runit.shtml

Whether there any way to add it to list of toolbars in the taskbar context menu like the address, links, and desktop toolbars?

My Vista taskbar icons are set to large and the taskbar is not locked - no problems ever. However, I have just installed the latest Adobe Reader update (9.1.3) and several of the taskbar quick launch 'buttons' show and work but the icons themselves do not show - ie the icons are blank. I have tried re-installing the shortcuts, also changing the icons to small but that makes no difference. Not sure where to go from here? Also carried out a full virus scan but nothing found.

I have an XP style Quick Launch bar on my taskbar.* Every once in awhile, such as this morning, it disappears on startup and Sys Restore doesn't bring it back. It's located via %appdata%\Microsoft\Internet Explorer and there's already a Quick Launch folder. Short of recreating it, is there a quick way to bring the whole thing back in one piece? Thanks,

Update: Strange. I created a new Quick Launch toolbar, got rid of show text and show title, and all the links were there to be dragged to the left, only in alphabetical order, per the folder list. So problem solved, something learned. Though not sure why it disappears every so often.

I keep 'losing' my quick-launch icons on the left-hand side of the task-bar. The icons first become inoperative, and shortly afterwards vanish altogether. Hovering the mouse pointer over the quick-launch corner does briefly produce the outline of buttons, and the "tip box", but nothing further. They do return if I re-boot, but are soon gone again. If I right-click-Open Folder, Win explorer opens the folder containing the links, and clicking on those links does work. Any ideas folks?

This problem has been present since MS pushed WinXP Pro SP3.

Hello Skippy, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Since the shortcut uses the {BA126AD7-2166-11D1-B1D0-00805FC1270E} GUID, you might see if creating a shortcut using either location below may work for you to then add to Quick Launch or Pin to taskbar.
explorer.exe /e,::{BA126AD7-2166-11D1-B1D0-00805FC1270E}

explorer shell:::{BA126AD7-2166-11D1-B1D0-00805FC1270E}
If that doesn't work for you, then you could open Network Connections, right click on the dial-up network connection, and click on Create shortcut. This will place a shortcut of it on your desktop than can then be place in Quick Launch.

Does anyone know how to get rid of these labels altogether? I suspect it may mean a visit o the registry.

Hi all I am fairly new to Windows 7 and its quick launch taskbar. However when I started using it once I clicked on a quick launch icon it stacked it to itself after opening. for instance Firefox or Chrome. Now however when I click one it quick launch icon does not "stack" after opening it creates another icon that then does stack. It now does this for everything on my quick launch. Any ideas. I know it is not a big deal but it drives the old lady crazy and I hate hearing about it LOL Thanks for looking and your help.

A:Windows 7 taskbar quick launch Does not stack creates new

Hello Nick, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Technically Quick Launch is a taskbar toolbar and not a pinned item. This is why when you open/run a item from Quick Launch, it will still have a separate icon appear on the taskbar for it's opened window. There's nothing that you could do about this other than pinning the item/program in Quick Launch on the takbar itself instead. This way you could run it from the taskbar instead of Quick Launch.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Hi,

The image below shows my current taskbar when I open a window that has a quick-launch icon (e.g. Opera) as you can see it combines the window and the quick-launch icon together however I would like it to create a separate taskbar item rather than doing this. I installed Quick Launch on my Taskbar (Windows 7, 64-bit).

I don't know how to position it next to the Start button.

The area in the Taskbar between the Start button and the Quick Launch toolbar appears to be reserved to display open applications.

Dragging the Quick Launch toolbar all the way to the left doesn't work. It stops 2 inches from the Start button, allowing room for open application icons.

Does anyone know how to fix this?

Hi everyone!

I joined this community to get a solution to my problem that came up yesterday. I have a Toshiba laptop with Vista Home Premium installed. In the course of my work, my taskbar buttons for my running programs suddenly disappeared. The quick launch icons all showed and expanded to the right with the dotted separator beside the start button visible but the second dotted separator after the last quick launch icon which you can drag also disappeared. System restore did not work and always resulted in errors. Now, I'm just using alt+tab to change windows but I'm not used to it and is uncomfortable for me.

Any suggestions Friends on what I should do? I hope you can help me with my problem.

Hi guys, i have a minor problem here,

but it keeps anoying me for weeks now. Whenever i rearange my shortcuts in the quicklaunchbar under WinXP ( e.g. all office shortcuts right next to another) and i restart, the order is changed PLUS the bar takes about 1,5 times the space of the size to which i resized it , meaning it takes about 1/3 of my taskbar instead of the 1/5 which would be totally sufficient for the shortcuts i got there.

I tried to completely remove the shortcuts from the quicklaunch folder and put em back in the order i want, i tried to disselect "autoarange symbols" .. but nothing seems to work

any sugestions????

A:Quick Launch Bar got its own will ?

btw,

heres my hijack logfile, if you spot something that can be removed plz let me know ..

On starting my laptop this morning the word "Umonit" appeared in the Quick Launch Bar and I have no idea what created it. How can I get rid of it permanently. I tried rebooting but that did not eliminate it.
any assistance appreciated.

A:Quick Launch Bar

Well "Umonit" disappeared from my screen Quick Launch Bar as mysteriously as it arrived.
A little Google research seems to indicate it is associated with either Scandisk or a USB hub but nothing that I can pin down.

MS seem to have decided that their "pin applications to the taskbar" feature is a much better solution than the Quick Launch bar - otherwise surley they would not have annoyed all those who have been using the Quick Launch bar for years by removing it...

I am getting used to the new taskbar in many respects, but one feature of the Quick Launch bar seems to be missing - I used to be able to drag any document onto the icon of an application in the Quick Launch bar to open the document in that app. This was very useful for opening random files with Notebook, and many other cases. I can't find any way of doing something similar with the taskbar. Is there one?

Thanks - Rowan

A:Quick Launch bar

Hellow Rowan, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You can add the old Quick Launch to the taskbar in Windows 7 if you like.

You can use the Open With feature to temporarily open a file with a program of your choice that supports opening the file type.

To make it easier to open files temporarily with Notepad, you can use the tutorial below to add Open with Notepad.

Open with Notepad - Add or Remove from Context Menu of Files

Hope this helps,

Hiya

When you say the icons keep changing, are they ones that you have seen before, like Desktop:

http://portal.clicksanangelo.com/clickFind/images/desktop.gif

If not, lets see a log. go to http://forum.aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.zip , and download 'Hijack This!'.
Unzip, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that, save the log somewhere, and please copy & paste its contents to the forum.

It will possibly show other issues deserving our attention, but most of what it lists will be harmless or even required, so do NOT fix anything yet.
Someone here will be happy to help you analyze the results.

My quick launch bar now shows the icon and the description of the shortcut. For instance I have the E and then "Launch Internet Explorer". In the past I had just the icon, and I would like to return to that. The only thing major that has happened has been the installation of QuickBooks Simple Start 2008. I did not noticed the change until the next day, so I do not know if they are related. If no one has expirienced this before, where in the registry do I find the keys for the quick launch properties?

Many thanx in advance,

Hi can someone tell me how many icons are meant to go into the quicklaunch bar before the little arrow shows up? I thought it was 3 and now have 4 icons with no pop up arrow yet..

A:quick launch

First of all the double arrow appears because there is no more space in the taskbar to fit quick launch icons. You can increas the amount of icons dsplayed as quick launch by unlocking the taskbar. This can be done by right-clicking the taskbar and uncheck the part where there is Lock the taskbar. Once this is done you can done move your cursor onto the triple-dotted lne found in the taskbar area near the quick launch icons. The cursor will be transformed into a double-headed arrow which enables to resize the quick lauch area and fit more icons in it without having the double arrow appearing once more. The more u resize the more quick launch icons that fit. Hence there is no limit for the ammount of icons you fit in the quick lauch area.

Hope this helps

If you create a new toolbar (right-click taskbar, toolbars, new toolbar) and in the text field at the bottom, type %AppData%\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch this will restore the quick launch toolbar.

This has me baffled!

I use the Quick Launch Bar for my most often used programs and also for my most used Excel Spreadhseets. In the past, I'be been able to drag these links to Excel spreadsheets to the Quick Launch Bar, and the pop-up tooltip will display the Shortcut Name I've applied at the desktop. Recently however, as I've dragged new Excel links onto the Quick Launch Bar, rather than tooltips displaying the shortcut name, it now displays the file type, file uathor, filte title and file size. Older links continue to properly display only the shortcut name under tooltips.

What's wro0ng?

Hi,

I have a very weird problem.
I recently installed Win 7 on a HP dv6-1125eo laptop, and then this problem occured. Every time i press one of the quick launch button, it does what I ask. But furthermore, like a small extra service, it opens microsoft excel. I've tried to update bios, as the only certified HP driver for win 7 regarding my laptop model. I also tried to install the vista driver for the quick launch buttons. I will really appreciate if anyone have a suggestion on how to solve this problem.

A:Win 7 and HP Quick Launch - NO

Hi -

Re-install the drivers for Quick Launch and check if there is a manual setting that can be changed for the now-open-Excel button.

You may have the most recent version by HP. I removed them from my system when running Vista x64 due to problems with QuickPlay and never bothered to install them when testing Windows 7.

WindowsXP Home Edition SP2
I had 7 items in my Quick launch bar with only 4 of them showing.
If I wanted to activate any of the 3 hidden ones, I only had to click on an arrow that used to be in the Taskbar.
to display them and then click the one I wanted
This arrow was next to the last of the 4 visible items.
.I tried to add a printer icon to the Quick launch bar, making it a total of 8 items, and in doing so I lost the small Taskbar arrow and also the small vertical bar that adjusted the length of the Quick launch bar.
I tried getting these back on the Taskbar but have not been able to do so.
How can I do this?.
Is 8 too many to have in the Quick launch bar ?.

There is a program somewhere in Windows XP wherein one can get, or add to, a listing of programs which are basically loaded when first turning on the computer. By adding a tick against the name of the program one can add it to the "quick launch" listing or delete it from the listing if it is already a quick launch program. Can you tell me how to find such a program, I've forgotten it.

When I take the Quick Launch bar off the taskbar, and then put it back on, all the icons are organized completely different. Is there any way to make it always stay the same?

A:Quick Launch

Leave it on. Why do you turn it on and off repeatedly?

Hello I have a HP Pavilion 15-e078sa Notebook running Microsoft Windows 8.1 [64 bit]. We recently re installed Windows on my device and the quick launch button is missing....  when we bought it, it had originally came with the HP Quick Start icon (square blue tile-like appearance with the rocket/NOT a shortcut with an arrow in it!)  Something has happened and to no avail are we able to get this back! We have downloaded all drivers and installed them...  I would like that original blue rocket ship button back and would be eternally grateful if any one could be of assistance regarding this.

If you use the Factory Recovery media all the settings should be there. So what Install did you u?

For some strange reason some of my quick launch icons no longer work. I have 4 quick launch icons (Windows Media, SBC, Internet Explorer, and Yahoo mail). The Yahoo mail quick launch icon is the only one that doesn't work when I click on it. It says:

However, when I actually "open" up the IE browser using the IE quick launch icon and have a browser Window open, I am able to use the Yahoo mail quick launch. And when I close all browser windows and try the Yahoo mail quick launch, I get that error message. Also, my volume control on the bottom right mysteriously dissappeared. Can someone please help me!!!

A:Quick launch

hi...try dragging the Yahoo email icon back into quick launch. Delete the one that is there already. As for the volume control, go to Start > Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices. Click on the "Volume" tab and make sure the "Place volume icon in the taskbar" is checked. That worked for me.

Hey um, I hope this is the right place.

I recently installed Windows 7 RC (x64) and I realized I am missing a few drivers that are not available on HP's support page for my laptop (dv5-1235dx).

Thats not a problem but I cannot find HP Quick Launch Buttons 6.40 H2, does anyone know where I can find that software? HP doesn't tech doesn't seem to know or care as they wont give me support for Windows 7.

A:HP Quick Launch Buttons 6.40 H2

Check in Windows Updates, including optional ones. If there's nothing there - there should be - make sure to look under 64-bit Vista on HP's site.

A:win7 quick launch

No, Quick Launch is NOT missing off your install, as it is NOT needed in Windows 7. If you look there are icons in the Task bar, and these are the replacement for the Quick Launch.
Yes, one can have the "Hidden Quick Launch" shown. See http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/888-quick-launch-enable-disable.html

Small annoyance, my taskbar to the left is blank so I unlock it, enable quick launch and I usually have 5 icons there, then I lock the taskbar. On reboot the taskbar is blank again ,quick launch icons gone so I repeat the whole process. To the right of the taskbar is absolutely fine, everything in place clock etc.Even tried services.msc but ssdp was already disabled there, cannot think what else I can do do, I would be grateful if anyone can suggest a remedy for this .

A:Quick launch icons

Check this Data value in the registry. (backup your registry before you make any changes)
Start> Run> type regedit then hit OK.
Go to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
Click on Winlogon folder in the left pane and look for Userinit in the right panel.
The data value for Userinit should be C:\Windows\System32\userinit.exe,
including the comma at the end. If you make a change, close regedit and reboot your computer.

I have my music on a separate hard drive to the rest of windows.

If I drag this drive from within My Computer, to the quick launch tool bar to create a short cut. All works fine. I click it, it loads up my music drive and away I go.

Upon restarting, clicking the same quick launch icon does nothing/ sod all/ zilch.

The HDD is internal and is working flawlessly. It can me accessed from within My Computer just fine. When selecting a music file it'll load WMP and play it's heart out.

It has the same target as before restart - K:\

So how come the short cut doesn't work once restarting?

I have unwanted programs inserted into my quick launch toolbar. How do I stop this from happening?

A:quick launch toolbar

you can "right mouse button click" on any program icon that you don't want and select delete, and it'll be gone.

often when you install a new program it'll offer you the option of not creating a quick launch icon, ie, if you read what's coming up on the screen instead of clicking "ok" all the way through the installation steps :)

but ofcourse some programs don't :( then you just have to delete it manually after.

On a work PC I have a habit of using quick launch because well... its quick!
However I have come across a problem with using the quick launch buttons.

If I have an ms office program open, word for example, and I am half way through a report, I use the quick launch desktop or IE to check something. When I attempt to return to the word file it closes (b4 saving) as my mouse passes over the taskbar button!! thank god for document recovery

This problem isnt persistent it happens randomly.

please keep in mind that this is a company PC on a network so i do have some restrictions

P.S. i have alredy asked tech suport at work to fix this, they know not wat to do

I have an HP Envy 4t Ultrabook, and for Windows 7, I could install the Quick Launch software update to get functionality of the Wireless button, and other function keys. I see on HP's site they offer it for Windows 7, but not for Windows 8...for my Ultrabook. Before I try to install the software, I'm wondering if anyone has other versions compatible with Windows 8?

hi all ,

I have just taken delivery of a Dell studio complete with Windows 7.

When I set the laptop up yesterday, the desktop featured a " quick launch" type bar/block at the top of the screen that allowed me to allocated the programs etc ( music, e mail etc etc ) into it.

booted up the laptop since last night and the bar has vanished along with the Napster links etc ( free napster with Dell offer) .

I have right clicked the desktop element and it is showing all items to be shown.

Only 12 hours into W7 and I'm losing things already !

any suggestions what I may have done wrong?

A:vanished quick launch bar??

Yeah. You probably didn't have a clean shutdown. Windows needs that to keep the quick launch upon first setting it. So...set it and then immediately reboot. Problem will not happen again.

On my XP at home I have been experiencing some strange behaviour: the quick launch bar autoresize is too short every boot. I tried do unblock, resize right, block and reboot and a lot of variants (reboot unlocked, moving, ...) with no effects. Every boot
my bar resizes to contain only 3 icons and >> for the others.

Anyone know how to resize and block quick launch bar to my dimensions, not dimension chosen by Bill?

TIA.

It randomly disappears at every reboot.
Other than that, everything seems to be working fine!
Any way to make it so that it doesn't disappear every, single, time I turn on the computer?

I use Quick Launch a lot - very convenient for opening all sorts of programmes. But some of the subfolders within Quick Launch take so, so long to open - I get a white box for up to 45 seconds whilst (it seems to me) the shortcut (to exe files mostly) icon pictures load up. Once they have loaded and I can see the icons, that subfolder will open almost straight away for some time afterwards, but I am soon back to stage one.

It is especially annoying if I hover over one of the subfolders accidentally - I have to sit and wait 30 seconds plus before I can do anything else on the PC. If anyone has a solution, I'd be most interested (and relieved) to hear it. (Have Googled this but, although I found similar complaints, I have not as yet found a solution).

Thanks,

Martin

Every now and then, for some reason or another, the icons on my XP's quick launch taskbar just go away. I then have to go back into Start Menu and properties and click the box that says "Show Quick Launch". Even then they are all out of order and I have to put then in order again.

i am not an expert, but the first thing that comes to mind is that a virus no your computer may be causing this to happen,

i think you should make a post in the security forum of the tech guy forums, and ask for help there, make sure your pc is as clean as possible of viruses, and start from there with any other issues about your pc,

Could someone please help me with this. Running XP pro and when I try to drag a desktop shortcut icon into the quick launch area I get a circle with a line through it. In properties, I do show a check by the quick launch. Thanks.

A:Solved: Quick Launch

It sounds like you're dragging it onto the Start menu icon or taskbar by accident, that usually brings the denied / circle with line through it icon. Try dragging the icon in between two icon already on the quick launch area and see if that helps.
