Box with little red flag appears in taskbar when opening a program

Q: Box with little red flag appears in taskbar when opening a program

I have a user here that each time she opens a file (say word or excel), just prior to the file opening another little box (minimized window) with a little red flag appears next to the file's window in the taskbar and then disappears when the file opens.

She claims that sometimes this window with the little red flag crashes and file she tries to open will not open at all.

I tried to do some research on this, but everything I looked at pertains to Outlook's red flag and that's NOT what is happening in this case.

Does anyone know what this little window is - is it background program or something? Does anyone know how to get rid of it? Is it spyware maybe?

Thanks everyone.

Preferred Solution: Box with little red flag appears in taskbar when opening a program

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Had a strange problem start roughly 2 weeks ago. Whenever I open any program the desktop icons & taskbar disappear then re appear after about 20 to 30 seconds. Also when double clicking on any office document the same thing happens but the document won't open unless you right click & open???
My pc was working fine until this started.I have tried Malaware, Superantispyware etc. Thought note sure if there are "dodgies" or something to do with pc or XP itself? Thanks in advance
Spec is XP Professional, Pentium 4 1.6GHz & 512 mb RAM

A:Desktop icons & taskbar disappear then re appear when opening any program

Further to the above I noticed in task manager that for Winlogon.exe the CPU usage is continually varying between 0% & 92%. Could this be the problem?

Hi, when I turn off my avast antivirus, the white flag on the taskbar doesn't change to the one with the red cross on it, like it used to some time ago. When I hover the pointer over it it pops up a "solve pc issues" message, and when I click on it, it says "turn on avast antivirus". So how do I get the red X flag back?

A:Action Center flag on taskbar doesn't show red x

Go to Action Center in Control panel>(Left side)Change Action Center settings click on that and you should be able to choose which security messages will be displayed;tick Spyware and related protection and Virus protection.

If it's already ticked try this: Action Center>(In the middle)Security (list will drop) >"Virus Protection" -Turn on messages about virus protection ; Spyware and unwanted software protection -Turn on messages about Spyware and unwanted software protection.

My taskbar still functions but I cant see the buttons in it because it's all black. I tried to change themes and make the desktop look pretty and ended up with a bunch of problems, so I erased all the stuff I had downloaded and after that it was messed up. I've tried to change it in the display menu, but no luck... I've even tried system restore; that seemed to work but after I started it up the next morning, it was black again. hope someone will be kind enough to help.

A:taskbar button appears

Welcome to TSF's HijackThis Log Help forum, marcb.

Before proceeding, please print this page or copy it to Notepad to help you carry out the instructions. (You can't have any browser windows open while you're doing the fix.) If you have questions about any instruction, please ask before performing it.

If you can't download a recommended program by simply clicking its link, please try right-clicking that link instead. Then click Save Link As.. or Save Target As.. and save the file to your computer.

Now, the fix..

Go to My Computer > Tools > Folder Options > View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are showing / visible. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files option.

Since it looks like you've already run an online virus scan at Trend Micro, I'm going to have you download a virus checker to see what its log tells us. Download Mwav virus checker -- use link 3. Save the tool to a folder, but do not run it yet.

To get rid of lingering installation files, you should empty your Temp folders. (You should do this periodically anyway; even benign software leaves a lot of junk there.) Download and install CleanUp! (alternate link), then run it and click the CleanUp! button. When it asks whether you want to log off, click Yes.

Reboot your system into Safe Mode by repeatedly tapping the F8 key until the menu appears, then selecting Safe Mode.

Open HijackThis and click Scan. If it still exists -- and it might not -- check the following entry:

O16 - DPF: {1D6711C8-7154-40BB-8380-3DEA45B69CBF} (Web P2P Installer)

Please close all other windows, including browsers, then click Fix checked.

Run CleanUp! and click the CleanUp! button. When it asks whether you want to log off, click Yes.

Reboot back into Safe Mode -- again, this means repeatedly tapping F8 until you get a menu from which you can select Safe Mode.

Before proceeding, please empty any Quarantine folder in your antivirus programs, and if you use Spybot, purge all recovery items in the program.
1. Double-click the Mwav.exe file. This is a standalone tool and NOT just a virus checker, so it won't install anything.
2. Select all local drives, scan all files, and press SCAN. NOTE: If you see a prompt that a virus was found and you need to purchase the product to remove the malware, just close the prompt and let the tool continue scanning. We are not going to use this to remove anything, only to ID the bad files.
3. When it is completed, it will display anything found in the lower pane.
4. In the Virus Log Information Pane, left-click and highlight all the information in the Lower pane. Then use CTRL and C on your keyboard to copy everything found in the lower pane, open a new Notepad file, and paste it in. Then save the Notepad file so you can copy that information into your next post here.

Reboot your system into normal mode.

In your next post, please include the mwav log and a fresh HijackThis log. (That entry we're trying to remove is stubborn, so we might not have gotten it this round.) Also, please let us know how the computer's doing -- are you still experiencing problems?

Tina

I have a FireFox icon on my Taskbar. This morning I find that when I click on it to start the service, another Firefox icon appears on the Taskbar. The new icon is the "running" program and the other icon does not show running.

Have run Malware Anti-Malware, Spybot and Super AntiSpyware with nothing showing.

Any help with this?

After a recent Windows update I now have the desktop taskbar appearing when I go into Metro apps.
It's annoying because it often hides some on screen info.
I prefer not to use the "auto hide" option and I have not enabled the "Show Windows Store apps on the taskbar" option.

Hi...

My computer is running really slow, and some *weird* things are happening. Like for instance...the page will suddenly "adjust" and move up a few inches or down a few inches on the screen. On the taskbar at the bottom a button will appear with just a picture of a page on it, no writting...then it disappears. It happens so fast, i can't click on it...Maybe that's a good thing. Anyway...here is my log...I appreciate you time and help.

Hi.

When I watch fullscreen video in any application (VLC, WMP, Mediaplayer Classic), the taskbar appears at the bottom of the screen at random times. In other words, it seems like something is taking focus away from the video. I tried Googling this, but could not find any way to solve it.

Here, I took a screenshot that shows the problem: imgur: the simple image sharer

I have FF8 shortcut on my taskbar. All of a sudden, when FF is opened, there is a second FF icon at the far right of the taskbar (not in the systray). Up until now, when FF opens, its existing taskbar icon would show it was open...there never was a second icon. How do I get back to just one icon?

A:When Firefox 8 opens, a second FF icon appears on the taskbar?

Unpin the existing one ... open firefox, and pin the new one . This trick mat do it.
At the same time, upgradation to FF9 may solve it.

After uninstalling google toolbar upon restarting after the screen says installing users settings, an then all that loads is the wallpaper and nothing else and the only way to shut down is the power button.

A:Wallpaper appears but no desktop, taskbar or start button

Try this just to see if this is the problem. Type "ctrl-alt-delete", open up "task manager". On the top, go to file --> "New Task (run...)" --> Type in "explorer.exe" and hit enter. Does this open up the start bar, icons, etc.?

HelloI have been infested with Sys32 properties window which keep appearing on window start up. I have tried by Norton anti virus also but it never works. I would appeciate if you help me to solve this problem. Below is the window which appears:Sys 32 PropertiesType: ApplicationOrigin: S-1-5-21-1482476501-1644491937-682003330-1013Size: 0 bytesThanks and best regardsRajEdit: Moved topic from Introductions to the more appropriate forum. ~ Animal

A:Window Sys32 Properties Appears On Opening

The System32 folder opens at startup because of a corrupt system registry value. The value could have been corrupted for a number of reasons to include malware or installing/uninstalling a program from the Internet which did not install/uninstall itself properly.Click on the link below:http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htmScroll down to #260 and click "System32 Folder Opens Upon Boot" in the right column. You will be prompted to download xp_systems32opens.vbs. Save the file to your desktop and double-click on it to run the script. Since the script modifies certain registry settings you may receive an alert from your anti-virus or any script blocking program. Ignore the warning and allow it to continue. The problem could also be caused by empty run entries in your startup shortcuts which will open the system32 folder. Check the startup run registry entries and remove those entries. See System32 Folder Opens When Logging on to Windows. These steps involves making changes in the registry. Always back up your registry before making any changes. If you are not familiar with working in the registry, then you should NOT attempt to make any changes on your own. Improper changes to the registry could adversely affect your computer and render it inoperable. ERUNT is an excellent FREE tool that allows you to to take a snapshot (backup) of your registry before making changes and restore it when needed.

Im really clueless on what happened. I opened my laptop and then opened Chrome as usual and then a Blue Screen Appeared.

Im Running on Windows 7. Im attaching the dump files.

**UPDATE: any other app i open results in a BSOD, ALSO reinstalling chrome does not help.

Im not very tech savvy.

LINK HERE

A:Bad_Pool_Caller BSOD appears when opening Chrome OR any other app

Hmm, the dump file seems partially corrupt. Anyway, first of all I would highly recommend turning on Driver Verifier by following these instructions.

Driver Verifier - Enable and Disable

Where John says to enable all drivers except for Microsoft Cooperation you should also avoid enabling drivers that are 'Unknown' or from 'Macrovision'.

When your PC BSODs upload the dump file by following the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Posting Instructions

Have you checked to see if you are infected? Sometimes an infection will corrupt your onboard protection - so I suggest that you try these free, online scans: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/blogs/usas...?showentry=1252Also, could you please post a screen shot of what appears on your desktop? Until recently whenever I opened by icon taskbar not active pinned replaced button to program Program a program by clicking on the program Program icon pinned to taskbar not replaced by active program button icon pinned to the taskbar that icon was replaced by the active program button This Program icon pinned to taskbar not replaced by active program button is the behavior I want in order to keep the taskbar uncluttered However I recently mistakenly unpinned an icon for Mozilla Thunderbird and after re-pinning the program start icon now the active program button appears in addition to the startup icon rather than replacing it I have pinned and unpinned the program several times and even after a restart of the machine the same result persists The problem seems to be limited to Thunderbird at least in my limited research If I pin other new programs to the taskbar the expected replacement behavior occurs even after un-pinning and re-pinning e g for Microsoft Word If I un-pin and re-pin programs that have been pinned to the taskbar from before the time this issue occurred with Thunderbird the expected replacement behavior occurs e g Mozilla Firefox

Hello yall!

So, for the past week, whenever I open a browser, a random site opens up, even though my startup page is set to yahoo.com.
Half the time it's safesurfs searching engine, but sometimes its some kind of a survey or an ad etc.

I remember it all started when I downloaded a sound kit for FL Studio, so i deleted all I could, but obviously it wasn't enough.

What can I do?

A:Random website appears as the startup page when opening any browser

Use some free virus scanner, like Eset online scanner, or Kaspersky security scan....
After removing of viruses, report viruses to current antivirus site or change antivirus program.

Hello. Let me explain my problem.

I had a program installed called Spiral Knights, and I pinned the icon onto the taskbar so I could quickly launch it. When I was done playing it for good, I uninstalled it and it looked like the icon was off the taskbar, but it wasn't. When I tried to put another program onto the taskbar, called minecraft_server.jar, it pinned to the Spiral Knights icon, even though SK isn't installed anymore. Wherever I try to put the minecraft_server.jar onto the taskbar, the SK program is still there, and it says if I want to pin the minecraft_server.jar onto SK. Please help!

I have 3 Windows user accounts. I would like to be able to keep the files and programs on each account separate from one another.

If I download, say, World of Warcraft on my gaming account (which I can set time limits for), then it appears on my work account as well (which I can't set time limits for). If I then delete it on my work account, it deletes it on my gaming account too.

The games do not reach my 3rd account, but I can't use that account since I don't know the password for it (that's how I limit my gaming time).

What I'm wondering is, how can I download a program and isolate it to one user account? Or, how can I delete files and folders without it doing so on multiple accounts?

Thanks.

A:Download program on 1 account, appears on 2

The only way I found to do this;

I run a pc with 3 user accounts all admins

install program, and log to other account and remove Icons from desktop and delete from all programs section, this doesnt remove the program but other account do not see the program available, I guess if the other people using the pc where savy enought they could go to the c drive and launch them naually but this is not my case, so basically they dont know its there.

For the past few weeks whenever I go to shutdown my computer an end program box appears with the message UiPopupHidden is closing. It doesn't seem to be slowing down things, but it bugs me that it is there and I have no idea what it is.

I've done all the 5 steps to post and have everything ready to send to this forum. I'm not sure about protocol though, so I will wait until someone responds until I send my attachments. I appreciate any help you may offer.

This is a major annoyance. Every time windows starts the folder C:\Program Files\Common appears. I'm running XP pro and have checked the registry keys HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Run, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run for the folder and the startup programs under system information and found nothing. The only thing in the common folder is another folder called Bin. Any ideas

Hobbes

A:C:\Program Files\Bin folder appears on reboot

Try booting without running any startup programs, does the folder still appear at startup?

Start>Run, key in msconfig and when it opens select "Selective Startup" and unselect "Load Startup Items". Click on Apply and follow the prompts to restart.

Let us know what happens

What that error message is telling you, is your videocard isn`t up to the standard required.

Hi forum

I got two Amplifier Simulation Software(s) today: Overloud Th-2, and Softube Vintage Amp Room. I tried installing them.

In both cases, I could install it without a hitch. However after installation, no shortcut appeared on my Desktop and when I went to my C drive > Program files to look for it, all i found was the uninstall files. The plugin files however, were there but I did not use them as I only plan to use these programs as standalones for the now. I don't think it is anything to do with the company and more to do with my computer, because both programs come across the exact same problem. (I did the VAR before the TH2).

Can anyone help??

Thanks guys!

I am getting this small window when I start my computer and it does not allow anything to start. I get various window messages, this time around I wrote down which ones:

"Div X Update Has Stopped Working"

"Skype Has Stopped Working"

And I tried running a couple of file on Word and Power Point and the samething happened not allowing them to open.

Can you please help me?

Thank you kindly in advance.

A:A "Stopped Working" window appears and does not allow to run/start any program

Do you have an updated AV program installed? Last time you ran a scan of the system?

Have you tried booting to Last Known Good Configuration?

Tried safe mode?

How long has this problem existed on this system? When is last time all was OK with system?

When I right click programs in the taskbar I have the option to "pin them to the tasbar". Is it possible to remove this option from the right click menu?

A:Remove "pin this program to taskbar" from right click menu in taskbar

Here's a discussion that makes it seem possible, but I would say it's too much work to make it worth it:

How to Remove "Pin this program to taskbar" (Network Steve Forum)

This isn't a guide, but it's a question that was posted asking the same question you're asking.

Also, the discussion is a little bit hard for me to follow because it's a thread but the responses to previous posts begin immediately following the last character of the post they're responding to.

To skip to down to the part that might work for some of your programs, perform a Ctrl+F search for "got". This is the first word of the post that suggests a possible solution for some programs that might allow it. Read the replies that this post received.

I got a notification from a program I had forgotten was installed with my computer (read: bloatware) called Lightscribe. I went into Control Panel>Notification Area Icons, then I selected to "hide icon and notifications" for Lightscribe.

After that, i then decided to uninstall Lightscribe. However, even after uninstalling the program and restarting, the icon still appears in Notification Area Icons. How do I get rid of this icon's listing all together?

EDIT: I just restored everything in the menu to "restore defaults" and it still appears except its set to "Only Show Notifications". I'll do another shut down and see if its still listed.
EDIT EDIT: Nope, still there. Should I have not hid that icon before I deleted the program?

A:Deleted program still appears in Nofication Area Icons menu

Also, in Control Panel>Notification Area Icons>System Icons. "Action Center" appears greyed out as "Off", but in Notification Area Icons tells me it's as "Only Show Notifications". So will Action Center still appear when I need it? Is that normal behavior?

I notice that when I plug my AC Adapter in (its not a Smart AC and not powerful enough for my computer so I always get a notification from it), the Action Center flag comes back...so I guess that's "Only Show Notifications", huh?

Hello!

I had this problem with some programs, when I was running windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit and now that I’ve upgraded my notebook to Win7 Pro 64-bit, I’m seeing this problem happen much more often.

When I open some programs, either the main program window or message box’s or menu’s, open up extending below my taskbar. In Outlook 2007 when I try to set up email accounts, the setup wizard go’s below my taskbar which means I can’t click on next or Finish. True Launch Bar is also another program that does the same thing and half a dozen other programs.

My screen is set at its max 1900 x 1200 resolution and the DPI is currently at 170%. Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT.

Ash

A:Programs keep opening below the taskbar

Ash, your DPI setting at 170% is the reason. Scale it back to maybe 120%

Check this for a better explanation: Windows Vista DPI scaling: my Vista is bigger than your Vista - istartedsomething

I just redid my system and I'm having an issue with the taskbar. Before I could open say explorer then another instance of it and the icons would be side by side. Now there's only one icon and when I click on it it shows the two programs. I don't want this, I want to see two icons on the taskbar again. It seems to be like this with all programs. I know it's a simple fix but I can figure it out.

Thanks,
Dave

Almost no program can start on Windows7 (only succeeded to run notepad and explorer but no IE, chrome, etc.) When I try to run it a spinning circle appears for a couple of seconds (the program names appears in the task manager) and then everything quits silently. no error message, no anything.

Tried numerous registry fixes (assumed wrong extension files associations) - didn't help.

Any idea?

A:Can't start any program on Win7. Starting circle-icon appears for 2sec

Hello Rytrom, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You could do a system restore (at boot if need be) using a restore point dated before this started to hopefully fix it for you.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

When I try and open Firefox and/or IE 9, they will only open as buttons on the taskbar. No window on the desktop. I can preview them with Aero peek but when I right click on the taskbar button and select maximize, restore, minimize nothing happens. I have looked at the properties on all of the shortcuts and they all say to run as normal window. Any other programs and games open as they should. Any ideas? Thanks!

A:Browsers are opening as buttons on the taskbar only

Hi Macatbigez, welcome to the Seven Forums.

This happens sometimes for instance if you have had a second display connected that is then disconnected, Windows opens the application in non-existing "ghost" display.

If this is your case, click repeatedly the icon in taskbar (maximize / minimize) to see if the window opens and disappears to the left or to the right when maximized. Follow the instructions in this post to bring it to your desktop: Windows disappearing to the side...

I m having a strange but serious problem with my Windows XP Pro system This all started happening a few days ago and & Taskbar Not Freezing Opening Folder has grown worse The symptoms are not always exactly the same - I ll try to describe some of the things that are happening After starting everything will run fine for anywhere from to minutes Then when I try to open a program Taskbar Freezing & Folder Not Opening via the start menu or a quick launch or if I try to open a folder for viewing either the taskbar will completely freeze or the folder I m trying to open will display the flashlght animation indefinitely Once this happens I can still alt tab between windows that are already open I just can t open any new windows or programs and everything seems to get more and more bogged down I can t even get the Task Manager to open As a result I had to restart my computer times yesterday while I was backing up my files preparing for reformatting Problem is whatever programs I have running say Firefox for searching the internet for a solution to my problem or Mozilla Mail for checking my emails for forum replies get corrupted during the restart because they weren t shut down properly I lost years of emails and internet bookmarks yesterday because they were apparently corrupted I ve scanned with every virus scanner available to me including a few online scanners and I ve run AdAware and Search amp Destroy None of the programs find anything wrong The only program I ve recently installed on my system is the Actual Window Minimizer that lets you minimize any program to the system tray After I started having these problems I uninstalled it thinking it might be the cause but things didn t get better Anyone have any idea what might be the source of my problems nbsp

Didn't know where to put this exactly... feel free to move it.

Anyone else have this? Every few minutes when my computer is idle, a blank tab opens on the taskbar with either the windows explorer file/folder icon, or the blank application icon where it looks like a business card or something. No words, just the icon and the screen space.

Anyone else have this or is this a known problem or what?

Hi My computer's whole trojan to hard have virus deleted program files drive, docs 'appears' and picked up a trojan virus I had one about a year ago and people were very helpful about it on here But this one seems to be a lot more disruptive and i'm not sure how many helpful details i'm going to be able to give you At the moment i can't even run a scan on the system or provide any error logs as the whole hard drive seems to have been wiped out by something claiming to be 'windows xp recovery' who want to charge me a premium for them to 'fix' the problem Except i'm pretty sure everything's still there really as when i tried to run a scan - which eventually got disrupted - it was still going through all my normal trojan virus 'appears' to have deleted whole hard drive, docs and program files files I can only guess this virus has essentially hidden my real hard drive and want money to bring it back under the guise of 'fixing' a problem it has in fact created It reminds me of the mob asking for protection money Anyway like i say the information i can give you is scant but the error messages are telling me- there's a problem with the 'ide sata hard disks' that there's a 'bad sector on the hard drive which may cause data corruption and loss hard drive inaccessability system errors and failures' and that 'windows was unable to save the file system a ' I have combofix installed from the last time this happened but it looks empty I'm not sure i can get onto the web to download anything And i can boot up windows recovery mode but not sure what best to do with it Does anyone have any advice or is it time to invest in a new computer Thanks

A:trojan virus 'appears' to have deleted whole hard drive, docs and program files

Hello mrbaggins.

No need to format, and you will be able to download and run the necessary tools.

Do not jump straight to running ComboFix. I need to see a preliminary set of logs in order to determine whether or not to deploy ComboFix. As explained in Post 2 of our pre-posting topic...

Quote:

Why we don't ask you to run ComboFix from the onset

As stated by the author of ComboFix:

ComboFix is a very powerful tool which when improperly used may render your machine to a doorstop.

We first need to verify if there's any rootkits present and how they could affect our tools. DDS & GMER are preliminary scans. We use their logs to map our strategy for attack.

With these logs we can determine the infections present & decide whether to deploy ComboFix.

Please do not run it until I advise you. First, I need more information. Please follow our pre-posting process outlined here and post the requested logs.

NEW INSTRUCTIONS - Read This Before Posting For Malware Removal Help

Those 2 tools (dds.scr and gmer.exe) can be downloaded and run from a flash drive if necessary. If you cannot see flash drive via My Computer or Windows Explorer, open Task Manager (press Ctrl Alt Del keys) Click File>New Task (Run...) and use the Browse button to locate the flash drive.

I need help getting to the bottom of this, not sure why it's happening, or when it started happening, maybe a week ago...

I get a seemingly random icon flash on the taskbar for no more than a few miliseconds, so i checked
event viewer to track down what was happening and the only thing i can find is 2 events in the subcategory
Application that states the source as RestartManager
and the event ID as 10000 and 10001, these both appear every time the icon flashes on the taskbar

I think this issue is also causing fullscreen flash vids to show the taskbar and a loading circle on the cursor... also Battlefield 4 likes to get a black screen then when i alt-tab i'm back to the game without any crashing or any error besides this ominous
black screen

I'm running 8.1 legit

Hi Everyone I play lots of games on my laptop but a game I used to play daily started acting goofy about weeks ago amp minimizes of window in to a opening Game taskbar instead even the tech support people at Wild Tangent are baffled I hope someone here knows how to fix this as I'm going nuts without my favorite game to play I'll try to provide as many details related to Game minimizes to taskbar instead of opening in a window this as I can so here goes My laptop runs Windows amp Flash is up-to-date I thought I should get that out of the way I use the game console for Wild Tangent amp all the games work fine except for quot Pioneer Lands quot I played it daily for months amp I never had any problems Game minimizes to taskbar instead of opening in a window I played quot Pioneer Lands quot on for a few hours then closed it at bedtime as usual On I opened the Game Console selected it amp clicked 'play' but instead of opening in its own window it minimized to my taskbar I could hear the normal sounds of the game amp waited for the window to open amp when it didn't I closed it amp reopened the console again Same thing but this time I saw it in my taskbar how odd So when clicking on it didn't open it I right-clicked on it amp in the menu I saw 'close window' amp 'pioneers exe' so I clicked on the 'pioneers exe' thinking it would open the game window but instead it opened an old version of the main game console called quot Orb quot that was upgraded several years ago Even more unusual the old quot Orb quot was never installed on this PC Weird huh I contacted WT tech support amp they told me to uninstall reboot reinstall the App amp the game so I did - times The problem persisted amp since then I have followed every possible combination of the above procedure almost a dozen times As a last resort I temporarily disabled my AV program even though I had all the correct 'exceptions' entered amp downloaded the App amp game because I was hoping that maybe something was getting blocked in the download process Unfortunately my idea didn't work either I sent an update to Wild Tangent amp while waiting for my next set of instructions to troubleshoot this problem I decided to do my normal maintenance amp I ran CCleaner I cleaned out the junk files then ran the Registry Scan While I normally just click the button to fix everything something caught my eye there were about - errors that referred to Wild Tangent stuff amp I also noticed a missing Registry Key for quot Open AL quot Now I'm not technically savvy but I thought I remembered a while back I had to install quot Open AL quot for another game so I wondered if there was a connection or at least a hint of a possible solution I don't know what ANY of these findings mean but I know that I saw Open AL in the dropdown menu on my Program Files x for Pioneer Lands so if the Reg Key was missing for this program then then maybe then I got a headache As I said I'm not tech savvy but stuff was bouncing around in my brain telling me that this might be related I'm attaching screenshots that show the dropdown menu amp the results of the Registry Scan so you can see if there's something there that I need to fix or reinstall or delete or whatever Believe me at this point I'm SO frustrated I'll try just about anything to get my game working again I even downloaded quot Pioneer Lands quot from other sites including Nevosoft the game's creator amp I get the exact result that I do when trying to play in Wild Tangent it minimizes to my taskbar period I can hear the sounds of the game but it won't open in a window to play it To my very inexperienced mind this means that either something's installed on my PC that shouldn't be or a program that should be installed isn't OR I have the program installed but it's been corrupted somehow Anyway that's my story amp I'm sticking to it If you need any other info just ask I'm desperate to get my game working again Thank you for reading this entirely-too-long post amp for any ... I posted the following on bleepingcomputer Another friend suggested me to post here quot It seems to me I've had this problem pretty much since minimized. Also Programs opening problems taskbar. with I installed Windows on this new computer Programs opening minimized. Also problems with taskbar. A friend of mine suggested me to ask help from here Some programs start up minimized most of the time - but not always At least Mozilla Thunderbird and Programs opening minimized. Also problems with taskbar. Adobe Premiere Pro CS keep doing that to name a few The shortcut properties have quot Run quot as quot Normal window quot for both programs I think I've also tried closing them with Ctrl pressed as suggested somewhere As for other similar problems I get occasional problems with opening windows from the taskbar groups The window shows up nicely when hovering over the thumbnail picture of the taskbar group but when I select it it just flashes on the top and then disappears goes back behind other windows Alt-tabbing seems to work flawlessly but it'd be nice to be able to use the taskbar too Any help appreciated Let me know if you need further info quot I've noticed later that Alt-Tabbing doesn't work always either They suggested me to try and pin software to taskbar at bleepingcomputer Both Thunderbird and Premiere have started normally when launched with the pinned icon instead of the desktop shortcuts That's not the real solution though and the problem remains at least with Windows Media Player It goes often minimized when launched by double clicking a video file on explorer I did a search on your site and found Toasty's post Programs start Minimized will NOT maximize Also it said in some post that you should press Alt when closing I'll try that next time the problem occurs but I doubt it's the solution as the programs sometimes open normally and sometimes don't Either way there's also the problem with the taskbar Thanks in advance It's really annoying when I can't rely on such basic functionality with my shining new OS

A:Programs opening minimized. Also problems with taskbar.

I had the same problem with a program that I have always used successfully: it had developed to a problem where the program login was normal but after my login, the program would run but only in the taskbar and I could not maximize it no matter what I tried.
In the end, I changed the display settings to "Medium" sized icons and had to log out of Windows and back in. Afterwards the program did run maximized.

I then went and changed the icons back to "smaller" again being required to log out and back in to Windows but after that the program begun working in a normal window again.

Hope this addresses your frustration.

I'm running 8.1 and most of the time when I click the double arrow on the taskbar to see the desktop it is just a blank window and the entire taskbar freezes. Everything else works fine but for about 2 minutes I get a spinning wheel and can't click anything on the taskbar. I tried resetting the taskbar with a windows batch file but no luck there either. Any ideas?

Over the last month or so I've been having problems almost everytime I use Windows XP - basically, after start-up I double-click the Internet Explorer icon and wait for it to open. However, this usually takes about 3 minutes - nothing happens after I double-click the icon, and it almost seems to be delayed reaction. Combined with this, often the whole taskbar will freeze and unusable for a couple of minutes. I have run msconfig and turned off everything on startup and also run spyware software to make sure nothings slowing my system. I've also checked Task manager whilst waiting for IE to open to try and see what the cpu's actually doing but it seems to just be system idle process. I'm totally baffled as to what's causing this and would really appreciate any ideas...

On my superbar, for google chrome and notepad, it says Google chrome (2) and Notepad (2). How can i get rid of the (2)?

A:Program (2) on taskbar

Hello Lloyd,

This usually happens when there was a duplicate one with the same name, so the 2 is added to the second copy since they cannot have the same file name. If you are unable unpin the duplicates directly from the taskbar, then double check in this hidden system folder below where pinned taskbar items are stored to see if you may have duplicates of these. If so, you can just delete them to stop 2 being added.

Code:

C:\Users\(User-Name)\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar
Hope this helps,
Shawn

I'm having trouble pinning a program to the taskbar. I have others pinned there, but trader's little helper won't pin. If I right click on it I just get an option to "Add to quick launch area" Same with the desktop icon I have. If I drag the icon from the prog when it's open....it still won't pin. The only option with a right click when the prog is open on the taskbar is "close window"
Any ideas?

I have a program called "kmttg.jar" that I use a lot (it transfers programs between my computer and my Tivo). When I right click on the program icon either on my desktop or the taskbar (when it's running) there is no "Pin to Taskbar" option (I suppose because it's a "jar" file?). Is there any other way to pin it to the taskbar? Thanks.

A:Can't Pin Program to Taskbar

Have you tried holding down the right mouse button on the icon and then dragging it up to the taskbar? Letting go of the right mouse button should offer to pin it.

I'd like to know if there's any way to hide taskbar program's.
Like I have Winamp installed. And everytime I hear music it show's in my taskbar and in my system tray.
Also Messenger.
I'd like it to run in background but not to show on my taskbar.

Here's my bar right now and I'd like to hide the Winamp
sorry if I explained myself badly.

A:Hiding program's on taskbar

Winamp icons are easily hidden, but MSN, I'm not so sure about that.

Make sure that Winamp is active, then press cntrl+P to open preferences. Click general preferences, then un-tick the task bar and system tray. Notifications are easily hidden too.

The quickest way IMO to fix this is do a system restore to a point before you made the above change..

Whenever I open a program and click the minimize button, it does not iconize to the taskbar as usual, but does this in the following image. How to fix?

A:Program windows not iconizing to the taskbar

Easiest fix may be a restore point from just before the problem started. If you have one. I don't think I've seen this unless some automatic MinimizeToTray type app was used.

Have you booted the machine since this started?
If you have a Registry backup such as with ERUNT that may be one thing sort of using a Restore Point.

For future reference I back up my Registry every day using
ERUNT

edit: the other time you might get funky behavior like this is using a 3rd party Theme especially if it replaces the shell DLL.

A:What might cause program icon on taskbar to vanish

Usually moving the item to another folder/drive etc

Windows also has an auto disk/desktop clean facility, whereby it will remove icons/shortcuts from the desktop

It could have been triggered by an M/S update!

Why dont you right click on the program icon in it's folder, scroll down to "send shortcut to desktop"

There are programs that I do not use in the notification area and I want others.

A:How to add a program to notification area of taskbar

Hello William,

If you were just wanting to run added programs, then you might consider using Quick Launch instead since it would be more customizable.

You could show or hide any of the notification area icons.Notification Area Icons - Hide or Show System Icons and Notifications
If you still have any notification area icons from uninstalled programs, then resetting the notification area will remove them.

Hi, in Windows 8.1, I know how to pin a shortcut to taskbar, by just dragging it to the taskbar, and it's done.

But some programs, like Googe Chrome, don't behavior like a shortcut pinned to taskbar, cause when I click them, they actually take control of the pinned icon and expand it. I don't want that.

I want a Chrome icon in the left of the taskbar, and when I click it, another Chrome item gets opened in the taskbar.

a)

b)

Thanks!

A:Pin a program to taskbar that works like a SHORTCUT

Right click on the desktop, choose New►Shortcut, in the first dialog type 'explorer' (without the quotes) then a space, then go to the Chrome .exe in ProgramFiles or ProgramFilesX86, Shift/right click on it and choose Copy as Path, then paste that in the rest of the dialog and click Next;
Name it... whatever;
then click Finnish.
Now, right click on the new shortcut►Properties►Change Icon►backspace to clear the 'Look for icons in this file:' dialog box then re-paste the Chrome.exe path that should still be on the 'clipboard', click OK and if the proper icon is highlighted click OK again, click Apply and OK again.
Pin that to the task bar and delete the desktop shortcut if you wish.

This started a week or so ago. I had a program pinned to the task bar, but suddenly it was behaving strangely. When I ran one or more instances of the program, they would group together, but not group with the pinned icon. I could move them separately. Just now, in a attempt to fix this, I unpinned the program, and tried to re-pin it, but that option is gone! Dragging the .exe file to the task bar also gives me the 'not allowed' mouse cursor. Pinning any other program and pinning this program to the start menu is still possible.

Before you ask, I've tried the shortcut arrow fix, but I already have, and always had, the IsShortcut key in the registry.

I haven't installed or uninstalled any programs in the mean time (except for updates), and a reboot didn't work either.

Hello, and Welcome to TSF.

Before beginning the fix, read this post completely. If there's anything that you do not understand, kindly ask your questions before proceeding. Ensure that there aren't any opened browsers when you are carrying out the procedures below. Save the following instructions in Notepad as this webpage would not be available when you're carrying out the fix.

It is IMPORTANT that you don't miss a step & perform everything in the correct order/sequence.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Download this file - http://download.bleepingcomputer.com...a/ComboFix.exe

* IMPORTANT !!! Place combofix.exe on your Desktop

Disconnect from the internet....pull the plug!
Go to -> Run -> paste in the following single line command & click OK

"%userprofile%\desktop\combofix.exe" /killall

Follow the prompts. Type "1" and press Enter to begin the scan.
Your desktop may go blank. This is normal. It will return when ComboFix is done. ComboFix may reboot your machine. This is normal.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Re-establish an internet connection.
Please download HijackThis to your desktop

Alternate link

Double-click on the file you just downloaded.
Click on the "Unzip" button to install. It will by default install to the directory - C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis

Upon install, HijackThis should open for you.

Should it not open, navigate to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis and double click on HijackThis.exe

1. If it gives you an intro screen, just choose 'Do a system scan and save a logfile'.
2. If you don't get the intro screen, just hit Scan and then click on Save log.
3. Post the hijackthis.log file here. Do not fix anything in HijackThis since they may be harmless.

I all working at any not Taskbar JumpLists are for program just bought a new computer and installed a new copy of Windows Home Premium Bit I wanted to use the JumpList but nothing happened Windows Explorer is pinned to the taskbar default after installation both checkboxes in the startmenu taskbar properties for displaying JumpList items are checked default after installation I tried a lot of things like unchecking the boxes deleting all files from AppData Microsoft Windows Recent AutomaticDestinations and re-booting every online help page said this was the cause of faulty JumpList behavior Then checking the boxes again and re-booting a nd time but the JumpList still does not let me pin any location from Windows Explorer to the taskbar list The AutomaticDestinations and CustomDestinations folders don't really exist in my Recent folder Briefly after one re-boot there was Taskbar JumpLists are not working at all for any program a AutomaticDestinations folder but once Taskbar JumpLists are not working at all for any program I deleted the file in this folder the folder itself was gone as well I also installed this windows update A Jump List Item is not displayed in Windows or in Windows Server R Then re-booted and tried the same as above but still nothing I even formatted the hard drive and re-installed Windows but I still have the exact same problem I'd appreciate any help thanks
