I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I had a version of the Fraud.c virus, and have removed it, but in the process deleted some contaminated files that I probably needed. I don't know which ones, but now I have lost three of the five tabs in my Display Properties menu box. Can I fix this wthout a repair reinstall? I still have my screensavers and wallpapers, even my themes, its just that I can't access them through the Display Properties menu box.

I have beat my head against a wall with this problem for three days now and I'm sincerely hoping someone here has run into it before and knows how to fix it.

In display properties there are absolutely no tabs.

The computer has XP with a Nvidia geforce4 mx 440 vid card.

-I have installed the newest driver and an older one, neither fix it.
-The tabs do appear in safe mode
-I have reinstalled SP1a
-I removed all spyware
-I have scanned for viruses
-I have disabled abolutely everything on startup
-I did find one mskb article that referrer to a similar problem after upgrading from 98 to xp but this came with xp and the article didn't have all the tabs missing.

Any ideas?

When I right click on the screen and select "Properties" I only get the theme option.
All my tabs have disappeared. I went to Kellys Corner and downloaded the reg file to display all tabs, but still nothing.
I can't change my screen saver or background or any properties.

Any ideas on how to get the tabs back?

Are your graphic card drivers conflicting? Check under my computer hardware and look for your yellow exclamation marks.try to do a repair with sfc/scannow and have your XP disc ready since it will need to copy those files from the disc. Here is an excellent tutorial on that subject.

A:Tabs Missing from Display Properties

Check this first:

Have you installed the display drivers for your chip or installed card?

That is sometimes a factor.

The other is a policy setting, but this should not occur on a clean install.

If one exists, it would be found in one of the registry keys below:

User Key: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\

System Key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\

OK....feel like a dumb a$# ... I got hit with virus/malaware. I was able to clean the harddrive usinBullgurd 8.0, but after clean-up I find that my display properties is missing the Walpaper and screen saver tabs.

How can I restore these?

A:Missing Display Properties Tabs

The first thing is to be sure that you're clean. I'd suggest a couple of these free, online scanners to verify that you're clean: (Be advised that some of these scanners will pickup things in "quarantine" from other anti-virus programs - so review the results carefully)http://housecall.trendmicro.com Scan Only - no removal If you're not clean, then a fix is unlikely to help you out - and if you're not clean, I'd suggest posting in the Am I Infected forum for assistance from the experts (here's the link: )Once that's done, post back and we'll work on fixing the display properties.

Hi fellas,

I am experiencing a big problem. As the title of the topic suggests, tabs in Display Properties are missing. Well, I have searched through Google a lot for this, and none of the advices worked. The advices generally point to a registry hack, but it does not work for me.

Well to describe the problem better, this thing arised after a Spyware Infection wallpaper came to my computer. I fixed everything related to it (at least I think so), but this sticked on me. If I run in safe mode, I can see all tabs properly. Also in normal mode, I can only see the themes tab, (with Windows Classic, XP, current theme, etc. as options) if I change to another theme and say apply, I can see the tabs (not exactly as they should be) until I press OK to close that window.

Does anybody have any suggestions?

Running Win XP Pro on a AMD Athlon XP 2800+ with 512MB of DDR 2700 RAM.

When I right-click on the desktop to make any changes (like wallpaper, or screensaver) all I get is the Display Properties box with no tabs.

The sheet displayed is Themes. The selected theme is Windows XP.

If I change the theme and click Apply, the tabs all appear. But if I close & re-open the Display Properties, I'm back to Themes with no tabs.

There is a similar post here already, but no one has posted any solutions.

Hello and thank you in advance for your help. I am a first time user and spent most of the night reading posting on this site. I was very helpful.

Enough said, I just ran into a problem with my display properties. It occurred after a virus attacked my computer and reset the desktop to a false "blue screen of death". I was able to remove it Ad-Aware SE, but once i was working with the computer again, I found that the tabs under "display properties" were missing. They included "Themes", "Desktop" and "Appearances". I already tried reinstalling XP and carefully reinstalling the ATI drivers, but i still only see the "screen saver" and "settings" tabs.

Thanks again!

My Dell Insipron 6400 laptop will not support multiple monitors. I think I may not have a key driver installed. Help!!

I have attached two separate images, screen shot of my device manager and display properties and a screen shot of the same image on my mothers PC. (which is also a Dell Inspiron 6400)

On my PC, In my device manager I can not view the display adapters (there must be something installed and I do not have visiblilty?? correct??)

Also, on my display properties I do not even have the option for Multiple monitor support. (these are the same PC's)

I inserted my Drivers and Utilities CD from Dell, but I did not see any driver on there that was applicable to a display adapter.

Am I on the right track???

Hey everyone,

I've got a Dell 17" LCD monitor (model: E173FP) and a question.

I need to fix the driver since I just reformatted; however, I can't edit a particular setting.

Follow me on this part: [right-click desktop] and select "Properties" => "Settings" => "Advanced" => "Monitor".

I need to get to the "Properties" screen, which is where the "Drivers" options are. Unfortunately, the entire "Properties" screen is grayed out, so I can't click "Properties" or change the Monitor Settings like the Hertz rate.

What is the work around for this?

Oh yeah, Dell said I have to pay them $50 if I want them to fix it. Noooooo!

A:Solved: Limited Display Properties

I'm not sure why you'd want the 1024 instead of the 800, because 1280x800 is a widescreen resolution, whereas 1280x1024 is a standard resolution. If you forced your monitor (Which I am assuming is a widescreen model) into 1280x1024 resolution, everything would be distorted.

The alternative is to set it to 1440x900, but it's possible that this resolution is too high for a "bottom end" laptop.

As for the hertz, unless I'm mistaken, they are more or less irrelevant on LCD screens. (Or at least, vastly less improtant than on CRTs)

1. Navigate to

2. Download this, run it, and click Yes when it asks if you want to "add this information to the registry."

On the desktop tab in Display properties, my background menu is diabled. You cannot click on anything on the list. The computer I am working on was given to me by someone at my job and they have apparantly locked it. I do have administrative previlage on my machine. I cannot figure out how they locked it down. They are not running any sort of control software on my computer. My only guess is they did it when they imaged the machine or through a registry edit.

Does anyone know how to unlock that menu?

Any help would be great.

A:Disabled Background Menu in Display Properties - SOLVED

1. Press "start" button
2. Run
3. Type gpedit.msc (This is group policy)
4. Right click on "local computer policy"
5. Choose "property"
6. Check both "Disable computer configuration settings" and "Disable user configuration settings"
7. Try it

Does anyone know of a way to get the file/folder properties page from a cmd prompt as though you have just gone and right-clicked the file/folder in the gui?

The reason I ask is because I may have a user logged in and need to look at the file/folder properties (specifically the ntfs permissions) and because they are logged in as a user account and have no access to the folder they cannot even see the security tab of the properties box.

So I need a way from the command prompt to open the properties box of a file/folder (as I have done a runas to get an admin prompt inside their user gui session). Looking at security settings in a cmd program may also be of some interest if anyone knows that either...

Hello I have two questions that are not critical to the operation of my system but has been driving me crazy in an effort to research them to no avail The only thing that I am pretty sure of is that properties window Folder dialog Extra Tabs on the it Extra Tabs on the Folder properties dialog window is a problem with the registry When I right click on a folder and then click properties the dialog window comes up with extra tabs This happens for every folder on my computer The extra tabs are the same tabs as the My Documents folder shortcut Target General and Sharing and the target window is C Documents and Settings Owner My Documents This results in Extra Tabs on the Folder properties dialog window every folder having an extra General and Sharing tab and a Target tab with the My Documents target in it Interestingly enough the virtual folder that is listed in explorer for My Documents has only tabs but the My Documents folder inside Documents and Settings Owner the actual folder itself has the extra tabs just like every other folder A possibly connected problem is that the Add Remove section of the Control Panel no longer has the install dates or useage level for most programs The dates are in the HKLM uninstall registry keys but they are not being read for some reason I have been installing and uninstalling a lot of programs mostly antivirus antispyware firewall and utility programs in an effort to clean up and speed up my computer and test a lot of different applications This effort has been dramatically successful however I am left with these two minor but annoying issues I did have an issue a couple of weeks ago with being unable to install microsoft updates which cost me many hours of research and effort with the help of Microsoft Support but I managed to fix it partly with their help but mostly with web research Ended up re-installing Office I think this is when the issue of the missing install dates started as the installed programs since this time are showing the install date Any ideas especially about the extra tabs Screenshot is attached Thank you Sybrandus

Hey, how are you?

So I'm trying to connect to the internet via wireless. I have this sheet that tells me step-by-step instructions on how to do this (connect to my work network). The problem is that when I right-click on 'Wireless Network Connection,' only the Networking and Sharing are the only options that show up. I need the 'General' 'Wireless Networks' 'Advanced' tabs to continue my set-up. Am I clicking on the wrong thing? This also happens with my 'Local Area Connection'.

I noticed that i'm missing nearly all tabs on properties, only general and summary tabs are visible. So at least security and compatibility tabs are missing and i need them. I noticed that when i go to Local security policy settings on Control panel>Administrative tools i get this error: and i think these problems are connected. So i need to fix that error and get the properties window working right again. Im administrator and running XP pro SP2.

A:Local security policy error and missing tabs on properties

You can restore missing tabs on properties go to Start>Run, type regedit. In the Registry Editor go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System
you should have a DWORD key "NoDispSettingsPage" change the value to "0".
If you don't see "NoDispSettingsPage" create the key give it a value of "1" then go back and change the value to "0".

If you're not comfortable messing with the registry wait for someone else with another suggestion. Good Luck!!!

This is probably a very stupid problem...

Basically, I tried to show my parents some photos on the TV through my laptop ( Toshiba Qosmio G10 - Win XP MCE 2005).

And it worked.

But the resolution was too fine, so I decided to tinker with the settings n both display properties and on the GeForce's own utility. (Graphics: Nvidia GeForce FX Go5700) Then the image on the TV just fanished after I pressed one setting or another. Is there anyway, to reset the properties on Display Properties or the Nvidia Utililty.

That way, (as a student) I can still continue to use my laptop for my presentations at uni.

Any help is greatly appreciated,

When i open the display box and try to click on a back ground option or browse it won't let me. The box with all of the options in it is grayed out. I used to be able to go online and set the picture I wanted as my background but now it won't even do that. Could my digital camera software be causing this problem. it is a Kodak Easy share. If it isn't what could the problem be? I have already checked to make sure that I have administrative care. Please help, I get tired of looking at a solid background.

A:Display Properties

Are you talking about the Wallpaper (desktop background)?

If so, then yes, I believe there are two folders where you can place them:

My Documents\My Pictures

If you save it in the Windows folder then the pictures have to be saved in .bmp format

If you save it in the My Pictures folder then it can be saved as either .jpg or .bmp format

Depends on the settings of your monitor it will go to standby but won't turn off your monitor. In order to turn off your monitor you have to phsically switch off the monitor.

This function is to save the power only. When the screen is idle for a long time (5 minutes) it will go to standby.

what should my settings be i am running windows xp they are set to 800/600 32 bit. is this ok or can i do better for loading the computer

A:display properties

It depends on how much stuff you want to see at a time and the resolution the monitor you have can support I'd recommend 1024X768 16/32 bit color.

If you wanted it faster change the 32 to 16 bit it will not be noticeable but it will probably run a very very small fraction of a second faster.

If your using an older monitor from about anywhere from '98 back to when VGA was first made then the current resolution is good for you.

Hi a short while ago I had to replace my graphics card GT Can't display get into properties and ended up replacing it with an MSI HD my problem is now that the card is in and working if I right click on the desktop and choose properties the display options screen doesn t open I can t get into it through Control Panel either I thought it was maybe off screen if the desktop was extended but it doesn t appear in task manager either There is a slight problem with drivers atm but not sure if it is connected when I boot into XP I get a dialogue box saying quot fail to load nvcpl dll quot as a result I have run driver sweeper in safe mode to remove nvidia display drivers and reinstalled the ATI ones Can't get into display properties - no change I have tried uninstalling the ATI Catalyst software as I thought that may be getting in the road somehow but no change The most annoying thing is that I normally don t have a screensaver on as I don t leave my monitor on when I m not using it but had for a particular night set a screensaver to whatever the lowest time interval is so now I can t change that if anyone has any suggestions I will be all ears edit just noticed if I have no browser windows open then for a split second I can see part of a window open when I try to get into display properties then it vanishes nbsp

A:Can't get into display properties

That appears to a driver install issue. That could be caused by a defect in the drive itself.
Have you tried going into the Device Manager and removing or disabling what you have, then rebooting and trying a new install... or going back to the previous driver on their website?

I clicked on display-properties-settings and switched from plug and play to default. I also checked the box that says use this device as the primary monitor and then clicked on apply and now its black , i can see the start button on bottom of screen and rebooted three times, i disconnected the monitor cable and tried to connect to different output on video cards no luck, i have no use of the mouse now after second reboot and cant get to system restore to back up a day and erase this foolish error. I hope someone has an idea of what i should try next,,my system has dual video cards and is only a month old i was just fooling around like an idiot and now im stuck>>.?

Am having a problem with Display Properties in WinXP-2. During the first 5 minutes after boot-up, screen resolution on my desk top is unstable with icon and window sizes changing from large to small and vice-versa. Resetting the Display Properties during this time has no effect. When the system warms up the problem is gone. Can the Monitor itself be the problem, or is it most likely the Video Card ? I don't have another monitor to use as a test unit. Please advise. Thk-U

Try re-seating the Video card if it is not intergrated one....and blow out the slot

In display properties, I have themes set to Windows XP. Under Windows and Buttons I only have the Windows Classic style available. This changed only since latest Windows Update (yesterday). Tried to restore to earlier date, no results. Any help appreciated. Thanks in advance.

A:No Display Properties At All

Try this registry edit (backup your registry before doing this!!!) Go to down to #285The first item in the right hand column will say "Restore All Display Tabs"Right click on it and select "Save Target As" or "Save Link As" Save it to and ensure it has the .reg extensionThen double click on it and answer Yes when it asks you for permission to merge it into your registry. Then see if it has worked. If not, then reboot the system to see if it'll work then. Here's a direct link to the page with the code:

when i re-installed windows xp i noticed the color was not correct so i went under display properties and saw the color quality was 4 bit instead of 32 i also could not move the screen resolution arrow and the screen and its contents are large so i can't make them smaller what happened and how can i fix it i looked at driver tab it states this driver is working properly

A:display properties

When you reinstall XP it begins using a generic driver that ships with XP. You will need to determine what type of graphics card you have in your system, go to that manufacturers website and download the appropriate driver.

When I go to display properties the tabs that are normally found at the top (themes, desktop, screen saver, etc) have all disappeared. I think that this started after I loaded the latest drivers for my NVIDIA graphics cards. I read elsewhere that a Trojan could cause it but have run my MacAfee Virus scanner and found nothing. Please help me...

By the way i am running Windows XP SP1 and I have a GeForce Fx 5200 if this helps.

Hi guys! I have just removed a variety of Spy/Malware and Virus's from a PC running XP. However I have a lingering problem. The Display properties has the desktop tab missing, also when the computer starts the only desktop I get, is like an "open windows explorer window" ! Thats what the desktop is displayed like, but you can still see the desktop icons. It is strange, but I have seen it before and managed to get ride of this by using Combofix and Smitraudfix. I tried these programs again , however no joy !

Any suggestions would be greatly appriciated!

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.Make sure you are connected to the Internet.Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application. When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings. When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:Update Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareLaunch Malwarebytes' Anti-MalwareThen click Finish.MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install. On the Scanner tab:Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected. Then click on the Scan button. If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button. The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient. When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad. The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. MBAM may make changes to your registry as part of its disinfection routine. If you're using other security programs that detect registry changes, they may alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please permit the program to allow the changes.

A:Display Properties Error

Run this program:

Look under the display options and uncheck all the things that are checked. If they are not checked, "toggle" them (that is, check them, close the program, open the program, uncheck them, and then close the program).

If this happened out of the blue without your changing any security settings deliberately, you probably have malware. Post a HijackThis log in the Security forum.

My XP is currently defaulted on it's display settings 640v by 480 pixels and will not allow me to change it. In fact, there is nothing to change it to.

I dont know what file I must of deleted, but is there anyway I can download the driver or something to make it so that it can be set on opitions that are higher? and if my color quality can be set to some higher than low, that would be amazing ;].

You need to update your video adapter driver, and we can't help with that until we know a lot more about your hardware.

I've tried to get my display properties open through every means i know. And the best the computer will do is change the cursor to the thinking symbol before stopping again!
Apologies if this has been posted before but it's driving me crazy and I can't see it anywhere else.

I've tried turning my firewalls off.
Stopping all timed tasks.
Pressing Ctrl whilst clicking the display logo.
Checking for viruses and spyware again and again.

Anybody experienced this or knows how to fix it that would be fantastic.

A:Display properties won't open

If it helps any I don't remember it happening before I installed SP2.

Perhaps there are known issues with this?
