Admin logon & Quick Launch Bar

Q: Admin logon & Quick Launch Bar

Hi, i have Windows XP Pro. How do i log on as admin? All my songs etc are on that account but it doesnt give me anyway to log onto admin since i created a second user account itjust atomatically puts me on that and when i goto log off the new screen that comes up only has the option of logging into the new user i made. Any advice please?

Also how do i make more than three icons display in the quick launch bar at one time without some of them hiding away?

Thanks Richard.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

i am using xp pro and i only display 3 icons in the quick launch area of the taskbar. they are a/v, speaker vol, and firewall. these used to show up within seconds of the desktop being displayed. however, the a/v icon pops up right away, on startup, but the speaker and firewall icons wont show up for 2-3 minutes. during this time, the machine s usable (slightly slow). now i use Codestuff Starter v5.6.1.19 to control my startup items and only the 3 previously mentioned are included there. when this first started, i did a restore from when it was good and that didnt help. i am not adverse to a format if necessary. i need your help/advice and tkz in advance, aloha

I now have these quick launch buttons working but I was wondering how can I change the defaut programns they open. e.g. The email button opens Outlook but I want it to open Windows Live Mail.
REP will be given.

A:Launch Manager (Quick Launch Buttons)

Is Outlook your current default E-Mail program?

You can change the default program to Windows live mail by selecting the start orb and the Default Programs.
Then choose, Select the default program. Here you should select Windows Live mail.

Hi guys, i have a minor problem here,

but it keeps anoying me for weeks now. Whenever i rearange my shortcuts in the quicklaunchbar under WinXP ( e.g. all office shortcuts right next to another) and i restart, the order is changed PLUS the bar takes about 1,5 times the space of the size to which i resized it , meaning it takes about 1/3 of my taskbar instead of the 1/5 which would be totally sufficient for the shortcuts i got there.

I tried to completely remove the shortcuts from the quicklaunch folder and put em back in the order i want, i tried to disselect "autoarange symbols" .. but nothing seems to work

any sugestions????

A:Quick Launch Bar got its own will ?

btw,

heres my hijack logfile, if you spot something that can be removed plz let me know ..

On starting my laptop this morning the word "Umonit" appeared in the Quick Launch Bar and I have no idea what created it. How can I get rid of it permanently. I tried rebooting but that did not eliminate it.
any assistance appreciated.

Well "Umonit" disappeared from my screen Quick Launch Bar as mysteriously as it arrived.
A little Google research seems to indicate it is associated with either Scandisk or a USB hub but nothing that I can pin down.

Hi can someone tell me how many icons are meant to go into the quicklaunch bar before the little arrow shows up? I thought it was 3 and now have 4 icons with no pop up arrow yet..

A:quick launch

First of all the double arrow appears because there is no more space in the taskbar to fit quick launch icons. You can increas the amount of icons dsplayed as quick launch by unlocking the taskbar. This can be done by right-clicking the taskbar and uncheck the part where there is Lock the taskbar. Once this is done you can done move your cursor onto the triple-dotted lne found in the taskbar area near the quick launch icons. The cursor will be transformed into a double-headed arrow which enables to resize the quick lauch area and fit more icons in it without having the double arrow appearing once more. The more u resize the more quick launch icons that fit. Hence there is no limit for the ammount of icons you fit in the quick lauch area.

Hope this helps

There is a program somewhere in Windows XP wherein one can get, or add to, a listing of programs which are basically loaded when first turning on the computer. By adding a tick against the name of the program one can add it to the "quick launch" listing or delete it from the listing if it is already a quick launch program. Can you tell me how to find such a program, I've forgotten it.

hi...try dragging the Yahoo email icon back into quick launch. Delete the one that is there already. As for the volume control, go to Start > Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices. Click on the "Volume" tab and make sure the "Place volume icon in the taskbar" is checked. That worked for me.

Hi DwightStegall, welcome to the forums.

If you create a new toolbar (right-click taskbar, toolbars, new toolbar) and in the text field at the bottom, type %AppData%\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch this will restore the quick launch toolbar.

Hi,

I have a very weird problem.
I recently installed Win 7 on a HP dv6-1125eo laptop, and then this problem occured. Every time i press one of the quick launch button, it does what I ask. But furthermore, like a small extra service, it opens microsoft excel. I've tried to update bios, as the only certified HP driver for win 7 regarding my laptop model. I also tried to install the vista driver for the quick launch buttons. I will really appreciate if anyone have a suggestion on how to solve this problem.

A:Win 7 and HP Quick Launch - NO

Hi -

Re-install the drivers for Quick Launch and check if there is a manual setting that can be changed for the now-open-Excel button.

You may have the most recent version by HP. I removed them from my system when running Vista x64 due to problems with QuickPlay and never bothered to install them when testing Windows 7.

MS seem to have decided that their "pin applications to the taskbar" feature is a much better solution than the Quick Launch bar - otherwise surley they would not have annoyed all those who have been using the Quick Launch bar for years by removing it...

I am getting used to the new taskbar in many respects, but one feature of the Quick Launch bar seems to be missing - I used to be able to drag any document onto the icon of an application in the Quick Launch bar to open the document in that app. This was very useful for opening random files with Notebook, and many other cases. I can't find any way of doing something similar with the taskbar. Is there one?

Thanks - Rowan

A:Quick Launch bar

Hellow Rowan, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You can add the old Quick Launch to the taskbar in Windows 7 if you like.

You can use the Open With feature to temporarily open a file with a program of your choice that supports opening the file type.

To make it easier to open files temporarily with Notepad, you can use the tutorial below to add Open with Notepad.

Open with Notepad - Add or Remove from Context Menu of Files

Hope this helps,

This has me baffled!

I use the Quick Launch Bar for my most often used programs and also for my most used Excel Spreadhseets. In the past, I'be been able to drag these links to Excel spreadsheets to the Quick Launch Bar, and the pop-up tooltip will display the Shortcut Name I've applied at the desktop. Recently however, as I've dragged new Excel links onto the Quick Launch Bar, rather than tooltips displaying the shortcut name, it now displays the file type, file uathor, filte title and file size. Older links continue to properly display only the shortcut name under tooltips.

What's wro0ng?

Thanks,

My quick launch bar now shows the icon and the description of the shortcut. For instance I have the E and then "Launch Internet Explorer". In the past I had just the icon, and I would like to return to that. The only thing major that has happened has been the installation of QuickBooks Simple Start 2008. I did not noticed the change until the next day, so I do not know if they are related. If no one has expirienced this before, where in the registry do I find the keys for the quick launch properties?

Many thanx in advance,

Joe

Since you are using the Windows Classic theme, you will have the bar to the left of Quick Launch instead of the dotted lines. See step 8 in the tutorial below for details on this.

When I inserted a disk into my computer it used to bring up a box that would give me a bunch of options for what to do with the disk, it was very easy it would give options for music cds to burn onto computer using windows media, itunes. for games it would bring up the box to just click so that i could launch right into the game. Now none of that stuff is happening when i insert a disk. I think somebody in my house may have changed an option, does anybody know how to change it to get those options again? any help would be appreciated.

Hiya

When you say the icons keep changing, are they ones that you have seen before, like Desktop:

http://portal.clicksanangelo.com/clickFind/images/desktop.gif

If not, lets see a log. go to http://forum.aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.zip , and download 'Hijack This!'.
Unzip, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that, save the log somewhere, and please copy & paste its contents to the forum.

It will possibly show other issues deserving our attention, but most of what it lists will be harmless or even required, so do NOT fix anything yet.
Someone here will be happy to help you analyze the results.

WindowsXP Home Edition SP2
I had 7 items in my Quick launch bar with only 4 of them showing.
If I wanted to activate any of the 3 hidden ones, I only had to click on an arrow that used to be in the Taskbar.
to display them and then click the one I wanted
This arrow was next to the last of the 4 visible items.
.I tried to add a printer icon to the Quick launch bar, making it a total of 8 items, and in doing so I lost the small Taskbar arrow and also the small vertical bar that adjusted the length of the Quick launch bar.
I tried getting these back on the Taskbar but have not been able to do so.
How can I do this?.
Is 8 too many to have in the Quick launch bar ?.

If you use the Factory Recovery media all the settings should be there. So what Install did you u?

Check this Data value in the registry. (backup your registry before you make any changes)
Start> Run> type regedit then hit OK.
Go to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
Click on Winlogon folder in the left pane and look for Userinit in the right panel.
The data value for Userinit should be C:\Windows\System32\userinit.exe,
including the comma at the end. If you make a change, close regedit and reboot your computer.

No, Quick Launch is NOT missing off your install, as it is NOT needed in Windows 7. If you look there are icons in the Task bar, and these are the replacement for the Quick Launch.

Hi all,

My Quick Launch Button LEDs (the ones at the top of the keyboard, not the fn+Fx keys) stopped working, so I contacted HP support. They asked me to uninstall the Quick Launch s/w from "Add/Remove Programs", so I did. Then they gave me a link where I should have been able to reinstall the s/w plus a new security patch, but that didn't work. Now, they have no idea what I should do.

I've searched around the HP site, but can't find the s/w to download the function for my nc2400.

Google gave me a post from this site from 2006 where a link for a different model was posted. Can anyone help me find the right place for me to download the Quick Launch s/w for my nc2400. I'm running Windows XP Professional.

Thanks!

Whenever I open a program from Quick Launch, the icon stays in Quick Launch, but also now has a icon for the default open window of it on the task bar. You might see if pinning the program itself to the taskbar may help instead if you do not have to many of them.

Hope this helps,

I activated quick launch like it had been in previous versions of Windows.

It works great, and I love it.

However, there's an icon on there that seems to be invalid. I get that weird Windows icon that comes up when a file is bad, and when I hover over it, it tells me it's an iTunes shortcut. I've tried to delete it, tried to remove it from the quick launch, tried to move it to the desktop - nothing works. I can't get it out of my quick launch area.

I've attached a screen shot of what the error message is when I try to do anything to it.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanx,

Hello Forum Members, My PC works under the Win XP Prof.
I have two Quick Launch Bars, one on the bottom, one on the right side of the DeskTop, each occupying the whole horizontal and the whole vertical sides of the screen. I have not installed them there. I would like to put a third one on the top of my desktop. Both Quick Launch Bars have the same Shortcut Icons. Most probably the third one will also have the exact copy as the previous two. I would like to delete all the Shortcut Icons ONLY from the newly installed bar, without affecting the other two, and put there other new ShortCot Icons. Thanks, lubitech

A:Installation of Quick Launch Bar in Win XP

Right click on the Taskbar - on Toolbars you will see various entries including Quick Launch.
If you uncheck click launch - the two you have will be gone.
You may then create the one you want. To delete any item from the quick launch, simply right click on the shortcut and delete. It removes the item ONLY from the quick launch.

To add simply drag and drop the shortcut.

Hello, im new here

The quick launch disappears when I reboot. Then I have to re-enable it with

"%userprofile%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch".

I read another thread that says the clue is to do this:

"go to Start ?> Run ?> regedit

and find the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindows
CurrentVersionPoliciesExplorer

On the right hand pane select NoSaveSettings and make sure its value is 0."

This thread is for XP, but I guess it is also a solution in windows 7 also.

I tried to do this, but I only have up to policies. Policies is empty.

Somebody know something about this? How to get the quick launch to stay, not disappear?

Hi guys, I'm running Windows 7 Build 7000 and I'm desperately trying to get the Quick Launch toolbar working. I've relied on it quite a bit for several years and it's a bit frustrating not to have it available by default in W7. I've already read the Quick Launch restoration tutorial and tried its various suggestions, but to no avail. Changing the settings in GPEdit.msc, modifying the registry manually and via the regkey -- nothing works. The Quick Launch option simply doesn't show up in the Toolbars menu when I right-click the taskbar.

Any advice? Thanks a lot!

A:Quick Launch - Mystery

Maybe somehow your local user profile name changed? This can happen when you update your workgroup or domain.

I know you said you already did a search, but I thought I'd layout how I'd search for them, incase you might have missing something.

I would to a Start->Search->For Files and Folers->All Files and Folders and search for "Quick Launch". You should see the Quick Launch folder for every profile on the computer after that. Can try searching through each one.

Or manually navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\ and search each profile in that directory. The folder you are looking for is under C:\Documents and Settings\<user name>\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch.

Hope that helps.

Basically what the title says - what is that launch bar at the middle of the top of the screen - I have never had this on my Vista (64bit Premium), but it looks useful.

How do I get it back? Did I turn it off when I turned off a lot of the features I don't use? Or maybe is it because I use the classic start menu? (Not my desktop obviously; found the image on a forum)

That "Quick Launch" bar isn't a standard part of Windows Vista. The user must have some third-party utility installed. Have you tried asking him/her what that utility is?

If you do find out, I'm curious myself because it look pretty useful...

Every time I reboot this xp pro system the quick launch toolbar disappears and does not open as it is set to.

I have searched the web and found two solutions, neither worked, they are:

Run the following commands

IE4UINIT.EXE
REGSVR32 /i SHELL32.DLL
REGSVR32 /i BROWSEUI.DLL

And the following registry edit, which in this case the registry shows what is below so this change couldn't be made.

1) Go to Start > RUN and type in "regedit" and click ok to proceed.

2) In Registry Editor (Start > Run... > regedit), navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

3. Find "the Userinit" key
4. it probably contains:

%system32%\wsaupdater.exe,

I have seen where a lot of people have this problem but haven't found a solution in this case. Anyone have any other suggestions or solutions?

Thank you and have a great day,

Added Quick Launch to my Task Bar. Has an icon peeking out when the task bar is locked but not when unlocked. Functionality is fine. Just kind of bugs me.

My Quick Launch vanished from my taskbar and no matter how many times I try to restore it through the right-click Toolbar function or Properties, it won't come back.

I usually have a lot of windows open at once and rely on the desktop and cascade icons there.

Can anyone explain how I can repair this function in my taskbar? I even tired to System Restore, but it failed to restore completely.

I'm working on Vista.

Thank you!

I have my music on a separate hard drive to the rest of windows.

If I drag this drive from within My Computer, to the quick launch tool bar to create a short cut. All works fine. I click it, it loads up my music drive and away I go.

Upon restarting, clicking the same quick launch icon does nothing/ sod all/ zilch.

The HDD is internal and is working flawlessly. It can me accessed from within My Computer just fine. When selecting a music file it'll load WMP and play it's heart out.

It has the same target as before restart - K:\

So how come the short cut doesn't work once restarting?

Something recently happened to my Quick Launch Buttons. Whenever I press the mute volume control button on the keyboard, it launches Excel.

I checked the Users Guide and found reference to the mute volume control button but no where did it indicate how to change any settings.

How do I fix this?

Thank you!

hi all ,

I have just taken delivery of a Dell studio complete with Windows 7.

When I set the laptop up yesterday, the desktop featured a " quick launch" type bar/block at the top of the screen that allowed me to allocated the programs etc ( music, e mail etc etc ) into it.

booted up the laptop since last night and the bar has vanished along with the Napster links etc ( free napster with Dell offer) .

I have right clicked the desktop element and it is showing all items to be shown.

Only 12 hours into W7 and I'm losing things already !

any suggestions what I may have done wrong?

A:vanished quick launch bar??

Yeah. You probably didn't have a clean shutdown. Windows needs that to keep the quick launch upon first setting it. So...set it and then immediately reboot. Problem will not happen again.

Sorry for this query because the answer may be blindingly obvious to everyone, but I can't find any info either here or when Googling. . .

Microsoft says it isn't supporting SP1 after October 10th so XP Home users like me had better install SP2. I'm always loathe to install just about anything from Microsoft because chaos has always followed in the past.

Anyway. Today I lost the morning downloading and auto installing Service Pack 2. . and having lost the morning, I've now lost the IE icon on my Quick Launch toolbar at the bottom of my screen.

All other QL icons are intact. But no Internet Explorer.

The only way of opening the browser is to click Start then go to the tp of the menu and click IE there -- hardly an improvement.

Has anyone else experienced the loss of the IE icon from their QL bar after installation of SP2? If so, what's the cure????

Thanks!

A:IE quick launch gone after SP2 upgrade

Not sure why it went away, but I do know how too fix it.
Go to the start menu and right click on the IE icon. Choose copy. Now go to the desktop and right click, choose paste.
Now drag the IE icon into the quicklaunch area. You will see a black line when it is in the right place. Let go and you should have an IE icon in quicklaunch. If not, keep trying.

Hi,

This may be a stupid question but I never claimed to be smart.

I am running Win XP.

I frequently use the quick launch bar as it is so convenient.

Suddenly all except 3 programmes have vanished. They can still be seen by clicking on the >> but not on the normal bar.

I can't extend the bar.

How do I get it to go back to displaying all the items I previously displayed?

Ray

A:Solved: XP Quick Launch Bar

Right click on the taskbar and remove the check mark on unlock the taskbar then you'll be able to extend the quick launch.

This is something new, it happens probably once every week or two and I'd like to say that I've restored the thing probably 6 or 7 times recently in the past couple months

Why is it all the sudden that my Quick Launch toolbar keeps disappearing? I don't get it. Considering that I as of lately have gotten enough practice in restoring it, I don't need the tutorial anymore.

Is there any way to prevent this from happening again?

How do put a quicklaunch icon on the taskbar. Simple with XP. I see that one can click pin and the icon does goes the task bar but it won't stay there. Does this make sense?
