Preferred Solution: accessing an old registry

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

is there I way I can take a look through my old registry, wich is now on my secondary drive

------

just to clear this up, I have a bunch of games and mods of games on my old drive that wont work now, but I think they wont work because of missing keys in the registry

I had a similar problem a some time ago after I moved some drives around, and changed some drive letters, and eventually found out that it could be solved just by changing a drive letter in a registry key to match the drive that the game is now on

but after this fresh XP install on a brand new drive, I cant find the path to these keys in my registry (cuz its a new registry from a fresh install on a new drive)

I know if I could browse my old registry, I could find this area, and make matching registry keys to make my games work

and yes I could just reinstall all the games, but theres a few of em, and alot of mods, and it would just be less of a pain in the *** this way, rather than haveing to reinstall mods and settings/controll configurations/video settings and all that kind of stuff I would be faceing

wait, just got a brain storm, if I reinstall just one of the games on the new drive, without deleteing the others, then the key would be in the registry, then I could find it, and change it to mach the old copy of the game ...maybe

but Id still like to know how to browse my old registry if possible, just out of curiosity, is it possible ?Click to expand...

Hi motherboard1,

Anything is possible! In order to do what you want, you would more than likely need a Win32 API program to do it which points to your old registry files on the slave disk.

Here is some VBS code you could download and modify to suit your needs:

I need to access some keys in my old XP registry which is on a harddrive. I currently have that drive slaved to my NEW harddrive and system. Due to the severe changes in hardware, my old OS won't boot up, so I can't just make my old HD the master and use regedit. I need a way to access the registry on my old OS through my NEW OS (XP also) so I can find and copy some keys. Any ideas??

Thanks

Every time a program tries to read my registry, I get a bsod with the error shown below. This has happened with Spybot S&D when it tries to make a registry backup, Ad-Aware 2007 when it attempts to scan the registry, and regedit when I try to export the registry. My drivers are up-to-date, I've ran CHKDSK, and my RAM passes memtest86. Other than this problem, my computer runs great. If anyone could help me out, I'd really appreciate it.

If you are getting an error that you can not write to the registry then there is a good chance the registry might be corrupt. Below is an article that might help you with a repair-install of Windows 2000 Please read the article and print it for reference if needed.

Hi all and merry hollidays. I got a problem you may be able to help me...

Yesterday I did a fresh installation of my W7 professional. Before that I backup the things I know I need. One ot them was to backup a branch from the registry to keep some details for a program I have.

Today I reinstalled that program but when I double click in order to incorporate the branch I got this error: "error accessing the registry".

I did clean registry with glaryutils and also tried with resplendence registry tools lite (this time no error but with no luck at all.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance to all.

A:Error accessing system registry

Hello Subasri, Welcome to the Forums,

assume you are going into CMD prompt, Because of the way administrators work in vista make sure you manually elevate to admin mode (right click on CMD.EXE or Shortcut and choose "Run as Administrator") otherwise the OS will treat you as a standard user. You can confirm that you are at the right level as the title bar will show "administrator"

Hello, and I recently did a re-install of Windows 8.1 Core.
(Here's why: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/589482/please-wait-after-lock-screen/)

Anyway, one of the items I backed up to my Western Digital My Passport Ultra (recognized as the F drive) before re-installing was Software.reg. When double clicking to merge, an error message pops up saying:
"Cannot import F:\Software.reg: Error accessing the registry."

If someone could help me in getting this item to merge, it would be wonderful.

You can right click the Windows icon and run Command Prompt (Admin)... from the prompt run Regedit... from the user interface try importing the file.

A:Need help accessing the computer's registry, because it's infected with spyware.

Hi there and welcome to TSF

You should not go into your registry and alter / delete anything unless you are very experienced at doing so.

Please create a folder at C:\HJT or another permanent location of your choice and download. HijackThis to the folder you created. This program will help us determine if there is any malware on your computer.

Before going any further, follow the link in my signature to Microbell's 5 Step Process and carry out the instructions. Once you have completed the applicable steps -
Double-click on the file you just downloaded.
If it gives you an intro screen, Select - Do a system scan and save a logfile.
If you don't get the intro screen, Press Scan and then click on Save log.
Post the HiJackThis log file, including the header information, back into this thread.

Hello,

One day not too long ago, one laptop started up on me. On bootup, I got an error message that says "

error accessing the system registry", followed by another error, " unexpected error; quitting". I went to

your website, downloaded several virus removal tools, and cleaned the infection, but the error still

happens. Today, I noticed that my desktop does the same thing. I ran RKill and Emsisoft's program, and it

is still running. So far, I have 2 objects detected:

and

an easy fix hopefully...
the error is short and annoying.

( registry editor )
registry editing has been disabled by your administrator
How do I reactivate these kinds of features from the control panel?

don't worry, I have administrative rights, Im in the proccess of removing malware and what not, and this must have been turned off at some point.
I have a number of programs already installed and it might be them.
I think I removed a registration cleaner, but I could be wrong I'll try and clean that out for sure.
thats about all know about the situation still trying to resolve other issues but they dont pertain right now, i'll probably post them in another part of the forums.

but obviously if Ive overlooked something important, please let me know and I'll do what ever is needed.
I'm new to this stuff and these forums.
thank you.

A:Registry problem after windows update and registry optimization tool

Hello adverley and welcome to Seven Forums.

I think you've tried most of the recommended ways to repair your computer. At this point you might consider a Repair Install. This should hopefully fix your currently installed Windows 7 and preserve your user accounts, data, programs, system drivers, etc. You would have to re-visit the Windows Update site and reinstall a whole bunch of updates.

Repair Install

Depending on how many updates you need to reinstall, I'd recommend turning off automatic updates and manually install just a few at a time (maybe 5 or 10.) If you need to reinstall SP1 I'd start with that first as it will take care of the first 50 - 100 updates. Reboot your computer. Then start installing the first group of 5 - 10. Keep track of the KB numbers. Start with the Critical/Important updates, then the Recommended, then the Optional. Reboot after installing each group. If any problems are noted you'll know which group of updates to uninstall. Try installing one at a time, rebooting after each one. They'll either all install correctly or you'll know which update is the problem. Leave it for last and continue with the next group. Yes, it's a lot slower doing it this way but when you're dealing with maybe 50 or more updates to be installed, this seems to work.

I ran CCleaners registry cleaner function and created a backup. File size of the backup is 59 KB

I then exported my registry file using regedit. File size of that backup is 305 MB

Anyone know why exporting the registry is so much bigger (about 5,000 times as big)?

A:Export registry file vs CCleaner's registry backup

It appears that the backup that CCleaner made was only of the entries that it deleted, rather than the whole thing.

If you want a solid registry backup that you can also restore to an unbootable machine use RegBak. Very good recovery tool to have on board.

Just a rough test:

1. No slideshow on desktop;
2. Backup the registry file;
3. Turn on the slideshow (Desktop - Personalize - Desktop Background - Select All - Save Changes);
4. Run the backup registry file;

The desktop starts with the original picture (the desktop wallpaper picture originally used) and still loops through the directory containing the original wallpaper.
No changes made by the registry file.

The slideshow (if wanted to turn off) isn't really controlled by the Registry?

A:Registry: can't control Desktop Background Slideshow in registry?

Found.
Can't change desktop background in Windows 7

The first solution works. Yet, the second doesn't. Still not controlled by Registry.

On my windows XP machine, I created a registry export file and verified the contents.

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\VB and VBA Program Settings\Hamlog]
    (no content)
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\VB and VBA Program Settings\Hamlog\ToolTips]
(long delimited string - 1059 lines, 49000+ total characters)

On my windows 7 machine, I imported the registry file and the system responded that the restore was successful.
However, the registry was *not* updated

My only recourse would be to write an application that processes the .reg file and xfrs data to the registry via "Save" operation.
But rewriting my own replacement for the Registry Import code seems ridiculous.
Thanks

This could be one of the ridiculous post have ever made. But, I have been wondering what will happen if I backup all of the registry keys, reset Windows 10, and then restore the registry keys? Will it affect device driver? Will the device be bricked?

A:Backup Registry, Reset Windows, and Restore Registry afterwards

No. You could but it will not work as you expect it to.

Assuming you back up and restore your registry what do you expect will happen?

Firstly after you restore your registry (which is only a database) will say "I have my drivers here". Then you restore and they are not there any more.

Why? Because your drivers are in C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore directory and you've now overwritten it. This is not part of your registry database but if you restore the old version of your registry it will look for drivers here and they simply will not exist.

Next you may have installed some programs. Their paths will also be saved in the registry database but they will not exist as you have overwritten C:\Program Files or whatever.

Your device will not be bricked (probably) but it will not work well if you do this.

A clean install (or restore) would be better. There are very few times restoring your registry would be a good idea. Pretty much the only time is to load the last known good configuration after a failed boot but even that almost never works.

Don't do it, but, if you do (for fun or learning), make a backup first.

In order to get rid of the *.zip folder view in WinExplorer on a64bit WIn7 system I tried to delete (according to some tutorials) the Registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Classes\CLSID\{E88DCCE0-B7B3-11d1-A9F0-00AA0060FA31}

Unfortuantely this is NOT possible immediately.
When I try to delete it then I got a popup

Cannot delete.... Error while delting key.

Ok, so I tried to get ownership of this key by right clicking-->Permissions
then selecting "Users" and enabling "Full control" the "apply" button but I got here:

Unable to save permission changes on ....
Access denied"

Why?

This last error comes for all Owners: SYSTEM, Administrators, trusted Installers.

I have Admin rights. So what more do I need to get ownership?

Even worse: Every change in owner is rejected as well.

Hello Background I have a program I use always I have the install disks and can install you copy WinXP registry a Win entry Pro into 7 Can registry it on Win Pro x It is a bit program However this program had a critical Can you copy a WinXP Pro registry entry into Win 7 registry patch issued as a download way back when and Can you copy a WinXP Pro registry entry into Win 7 registry this patch cannot be installed on the system because the installer is a NE Win bit The patch is critical to the program without which it crashes every to minutes I put on Win two programs which also only had bit installers they also are bit and I got them to work The solution for them was to copy the folder over from XP click the exe and then windows gives you a window says x is missing usually dll files so I then copied over to the system and the sysWOW folders the missing dll files Not sure which folder they should be in so did both They work a treat with no problems The Issue and question I copied and pasted this program over however unlike the others when I click it the error message is That x is not found in the registry So I was wondering if it is possible to copy the existing registry file from XP to the Win registry The location on XP is the same location Win gives for the missing folder and missing value I do understand editing registries is tricky I've done just some basic edits and I know the first thing to do if this is possible is to back it up before I start Possible other solution Could I install using the CDs which would put the program in the registry and then copy the folder I brought from XP over that installation and then change the registry based on the values that are in the XP registry Though the first way would be the quickest I don't care which I have to use as long as I can get the program running and since it is bit it will run once the registry issue is solved Thanks for any help Ruth

A:Can you copy a WinXP Pro registry entry into Win 7 registry

It shouldn't hurt to rerun the patch on the XP machine? If that should be ok you can use RegShot to take a snapshot of the XP Registry before installing the patch. Then take another after. It will tell you what files and Registry settings were changed. If the patch only updated the exe then I would just install on W7 then copy the patched exe from the XP machine.

If you're lucky that's all you'll need.

I'm searching my registry to remove some things I don't want, and found about a hundred adware or spyware sounding ".com" websites listed in a "P3P" folder in my "Internet Settings" Key(folder).

Are those spy websites and browser trackers that my computer is listing to Block, or what?
(a Google search said something about P3P being involved with user's trust about personal information. That sounds like a good thing. A:Registry Scan Fix Or Registry Scam

I am leary of any register cleaner, since they often do more harm to your computer ---if you are not extremely careful---than they do good. Unless you are somewhat knowledgeable about your operating systems, I would avoid using them altogether.
Since we cannot see the report, it would be very difficult to judge its contents or even to determine if they are "problems."
I would certainly think that you would be much better served by scanning your hard drive with several anti-spyware applications.

A friend is going to purchase a Win7 machine soon and give me his old XP machine. I plan to use this gift as an opportunity to learn the registry on a (sacrificial) test machine. If things go foul, I can bulldoze the XP machine and do a fresh install without compromising the other computers in the house.

Are there significant differences in the Win7 registry and the XP registry which I should be aware of, or are they similar enough to make what I learn on the XP machine useful on a Win7 machine?

Are there any pitfalls I need to be aware of?

drpepper

A:Win7 registry vs. XP registry

There are certainly changes in the registry structure and where things are stored from XP to Vista/7. Some are significant and some are subtle. Much of what you learn from the XP registry you will be able to carry over to Win 7, particularly if you learn the ideas and methodology behind where/when things are stored and not just memorize the particular locations where they are stored.

I was wondering if someone can tell me which is the best free registry software which corrects errors and cleans up your registry?

A:Registry Cleaner And Registry Fix

I'm not an expert but the experts here don't recommend any registry cleaners and their advice is to stay out of the registry because you are more likely to mess up your computer than help it. They also say that this notion that cleaning the registry will improve your computer's performance is a myth. If you're having problems, there's something else going on and messing around with the registry isn't going to help.

A:Disk Defrag, Registry Defrag and Registry Cleaners

Statistics can be manipulated (and are). I can quote as many in favor, as opposed.

The majority opinion (IMHO) is in the hands of an experienced user they are usually safe. In the hands of a noob they can be big trouble.

Since its your hill and your beans, its your call.

Regarding HD defrag, win 7 does it well, but if you are inclined most of these wont bite you.

IMO leave the registry alone.

My wife and I have some friends who have a PC which doesn't work anymore, and they gave it to me to try and help. They were using XP.

The overall system is done, but they wanted to get photos from the HD, which are many of family, and they don't want to lose them.

I connected the HD to my system, which runs Windows 7, and can see the folders in question, but can't drag them to my USB stick, or my HD or anything.

It says I don't have permission to view these photos...is there a password they need to give me? Or is this a Windows 7 security issue?

They're anxious to hear some news, any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'll be speaking with them over this weekend, and hope to have their photos back.

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

A:Need help accessing my PC

Neobahamut, if you have another computer you could try accessing your D: drive, and as you said you have the password, you should be able to access the data / remove bit locker encryption completely. Let me know if this helps.

so i pulled my HDD out of my computer because windows was corrupt and i couldnt boot up. it would be really nice to be able to pull files off the HDD, but when i plug it into my laptop (via IDE to USB) it says that it is inaccessable because of an I/O Device Error. just wondering if i am screwed or if there is something i can do to get into the HDD.

Thanks!

A:Accessing bad HDD

Just to make sure, is the cables in correctly... also with the usb cradles, you might need to have the master, slave, cable select in a particular spot (normally master or cable select)..

Hello,

I'm running Windows 7 and have a friend who has given me a HD from their computer, which doesn't work.

I plugged it into my system, and can access the HD, but keep getting errors saying that I don't have the proper permission to view the JPG's I've been asked to retrieve.

I can't even just drag the files to a memory stick I have plugged into my USB.

What is the way around this? Do I have to find out their password, and enter it somewhere?

Any thoughts

Thanks

My Lenovo Y710 has 4 gig of RAM installed, but Vista, of course, only used 3 gig. I thought when I upgraded to Win7 (32bit) that it would use all 4 gig, but system information says it's still only using 3 gig. Is there a setting I can change or perhaps a BIOS upgrade that will cause the machine to use all 4 gig of RAM.

Thanks in advance,
John P. Sparkman

A:Accessing 4 gig of RAM

32-bit OS(s) can only addressed roughly 3.5gb of ram. 64-bit can use all 4gb. However if you have a embedded video card, it will take some of that memory.

I have two windows 7 desktops connected on a LAN. I do not use the Homegroup sharing (have problem with IP6 on one of the machines) anyway I prefer the conventional standard workgroup share system. Now neither computers use IDs and passwords (left blank). But when I try and access a share on one machine from another, I get the id and password box, yet none are set. And I get stuck here and cannot access shared drives (and have locally set the drive to share with the hand symbol under the drive). How can I access the shares on the other machine. Both are on the same LAN and see each other. Never had this prob with XP although that had its own problematic ways of working at times. Mike

If your Router is secure, either by WEP or WPK then you could always disable passwords in the Network and Sharing Center > Advanced sharing settings

I need help accessing my IDE HDD connected via USB SATA/IDE hdd adapter (model usb-dsc9). This HDD was my primary on an old computer running Win7 and still has all the files. I am currently running Win8.1.

The HDD shows in My Computer as a removable disk, with an auto-assigned letter. When I try to open it, I am told to "please insert a disk". It is showing in device manager as USB mass storage device with no errors. It is also listed in disk management under my primary hdd. The hdd is powered by the adapter and I can hear it spinning.

Any help is appreciated,

I am a military service member trying to access my OWA e-mail and Defense Travel System (DTS) with a MacBook Pro. I am currently running Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5. I did not have any issues in accessing my OWA or DTS until December of last year. I understand there was a software update to Mac OS X Lion during this time and this could be the reason.

Whenever I try to login my OWA I get the following error:

Error Code: 500 Internal Server Error. The server denied the specified Uniform Resource Locator (URL). Contact the server administrator. (12202)

Whenever I try to login to DTS I get the following error:

Login Error
There has been a problem with your login.
The site is experiencing technical difficulties. Please try again later or contact your DTS site administrator for assistance.
Error is: --, dbsign code: 305

I appreciate if anybody can help me resolve this issue.

Thanks.

A:Accessing OWA and DTS on a MAC

Are certificates and ID card up to date? Which browser are you using? I think DTS works only with Safari on Mac. But you should probably contact support staff for both systems.

I have a Trendnet TV-IP110/W IP camera. I set up a free account with a dns company and can access my camera over the net, problem is when I connect it asks for login info and then shows the admin panel to the camera.

Is there a way to type the url and just see the video stream? I disabled direct video stream authentication but it's still giving me logon screen then admin panel.

Hello wenFD,You could download HostsXpert 4.4 which is a nice portable program to backup, restore, and edit your host file. Unzip the download and double click on HostXpert.exe to start the program. In the right pane you will see your current host file.First, backup your current host fileClick "Make Writable" in the upper left pane.Click "Backup/Restore" then "Create Backup." Click "OK" to confirmation. The backup was created in the folder where HostXpert resides should you need to restore it.Now to edit your host fileArrow down the right pane and find the entrys you wish to delete.Right mouse click on the entry and make your selection. When you have finished editing, click "Make Read Only?" from the top left pane before exiting.

Hi everyone,
I dont post much on here because most of my questions have already been asked and I can find the answers.

I can not access my Buffalo Linkstation PRO NAS remotely.

When I use the Buffalo site, or manually type in my IP address and port number, I get directed to my router settings and not the NAS.

Its a Buffalo LS-XHLCE3 and a Linksys WRT320n

The settings on the NAS are:
Web Access Enabled
SSL Encryprion on
Use Buffalo NAS on
Port 9000

The settings on the router are:
Single port forwarding Internal/external 9000 to the Buffalo NAS Ip 102.168.1.100

Port range forwarding 9000-9000 to 192.168.1.100
Port range triggering: Triggered range 9000-9000 to forwarded range 9000-9000

Remote access is enabled.

Can anyone help? What other information is needed? I am clearly a novice.

I am having a difficult time getting into a specific email account so I can change the server settings. I added a new hotmail account to my live mail program and allowed the program to automatically set the pop info. But when I try to send a message it doesn't recognize the setting (553). But I'll be darned if I can find out how to get to that account's server info page. And what should those server settings be? Please give specific instructions? I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium.

Kind Regards,

Steve

A VHD file is the hard drive file system of MS Virtual PC. If you have Windows 7 Professional or above, you can install Virtual PC and perhaps make a virtual machine with that hard drive file.

I have two problems with Vista Networking. (XP was so much easier)

First I have 5 computers networked. Two Desktops Vista, one Laptop Vista, Two Desktops XP. All through a 4 port router and a wireless for the laptop.

I cannot view the c:\ drives on either Desktop Vista or Laptop Vista from each of the vista computers. I can see the portable drives connected to the Vista Desktops only. All the Vistas tell me that Windows cannot access these drives. All my permissions are set to full and all are on one network and workgroup. The printer tells me that Operation cannot be completed.

I'll get to to XP accessing Vista computers yet I can access XP from the vistas at another time.

What am I missing here? Any help?

in the sharing options, have you allowed a guest account? i found that letting a guest account have access to the drives (view only) then this seems to help, password protection seems to make things more difficult.
Edit: i'm on 7 but the sharing options are very similar to Vista.

Considering what you've posted, I suggest creating a new thread on the Virus, Trojan, Spyware, and Malware Removal Logs board.Very Important! Carefully read through and follow these instructions before posting. Skip the GMER step since you're running 64-bit.After you have created the new thread, post a reply here with a link to that thread.

Hi New here My home computer runs Win XP My office accessing Remotely RDC via computer runs Win I would like to access my home computer from my office computer and vice versa I have set up Remote Desktop Connection RDC on both computers according to the instructions given in the Help pages for both operating Remotely accessing via RDC systems I have added RDC as an exception to the Windows firewall on both machines In both cases the computers are connected to the internet via a broadband modem and a common ISP In both cases a WIFI router is also employed to make laptop connections available The RDC works fine whilst within the WIFI environment In other words I can connect locally to both Host computers using a laptop as a Client so I have every reason to believe that I have set up the RDC correctly But I cannot access the computers remotely I can't see the computer names I can't see their IP addresses I tried pinging them and it timed out I feel that it has to be something to do with the settings for the modem provided by the ISP I can access the modems setup using a browser and Various help sites suggest a special Remotely accessing via RDC port number but I can't find anywhere in the modem setups to be able to use that port number I have tried asking the ISP for help but now days later there is no response from them Does anyone have any ideas that might help me please

A:Remotely accessing via RDC

See if this helps:

When you are connecting to the host computer from outside it's local network, you would use the WAN IP and not the local IP address. The Wide Area Network IP can be found by using a site like www.whatismyip.com whilst browsing on the host computer. E.g. Use the RDP to connect to the WAN IP and not the local.

You should then forward port TCP 3389 to the local IP address in the router (and possibly the modem too)

This will RDP connect to your remote network "outside IP" and your remote network will then "hand off' the RDP connection to the "local IP."

--NOTE--
Some modems/routers call port forwarding "Virtual Servers"

Okay....

Honestly, I'm new to this and I have never used a bluetooth before this time... and I'm not sure how to work with bluetooths... my friend (not so good at computers) gave it to me to open it and copy the stuff from it - it is a USB bluetooth... so please try to be as lenient as possible when explaining things

hmmm... well so I put in on my computer, the green light flahes, my computer recognizes a new hardware... but it won't install

2 problems
1- the bluetooth CD is lost
2- It is a generic type... hmm called Xtreme Technology with XTRA Value Ver. 2.0 EDR Class 1
So.... what to do... any help would be appreciated... I have winxp home edition

I have a printer connected via a print server on a LAN, which has no problem and can be used by all computers connected to the LAN. I also connected a Linksys wireless router to the LAN. I have no problem accessing the Internet or the other computers on the LAN with my laptop via the wireless connection. However I cannot access the printer. I can see the print server on my network workgroup, but access is denied. How can I access the printer?

Hi, I'm very new to this so would appreciate any advice or help.
When I use IE (under Vista) it will access HTTPS(secure) sites but not HTTP sites.
Why? Are there some settings I need to alter.
I can access HTTP sites with Firefox

A:Accessing web sites with IE

Hi, niallmccormick, and welcome to the forums.

Can you be more specific? Is here an error message you are encountering, either from IE or from another program? A screen shot would be helpful....

What happens when you first open IE?

Greetings I took a quick search here and found a lot of close posts but not one that quot hit the nail on the head quot My issue has to do with accessing file shares on an XP pro SP machine NTFS File system from my brand new win home permium machine I use the XP pro machine as a low end quot file server quot Basically just a repository Goal To be able to access SOME not all files on my XP machine from my new WIN machine Assumptions All machines involved are members of the same workgroup All on the same subnet All machines can ping to and from each other The XP Pro machine uses usernames and passwords All machines have the same name and password for their respective usernames IE userxyz and are the usernames and passwords on ALL useraccounts on all machines IE they match History I consider myself to be pretty well versed in NTFS rights and file sharing ACL's etc Though by no means an expert Also I am brand new to Win I have other XP home machines that can get to the XP Pro machine fine As mentioned above (NTFS) XP 7 Win Pro Win Accessing from upon file access when the Pro machine calls for a login I use Accessing Win XP Pro (NTFS) from Win 7 userxyz and password I am in I have correct access read-write to the files that are properly shared and have proper ACL's set When I do this with the Win machine using the same credentials when prompted for them I can get access to the proper folders and files but I can not write to or change them This all started because I keep my iTunes library on the XP pro machine From my Win machine for the first time I tried to import add file to library and it gave me the quot You do not have permission to access quot error Reiterating reference above The XP machines work fine I get correct access to the files in question I experimented with a test folder on the XP Pro machine because I didn't want to experiment with the quot Accessing Win XP Pro (NTFS) from Win 7 production quot files I created a test folder in the same location as the production Accessing Win XP Pro (NTFS) from Win 7 folder and gave it the same folder and file rights XP home machines work fine read write Win quot You do not have permission to access quot error I can alter the rights on the test folder give authenticated users change at the folder level and then this solves the issue EXCEPT that now any user has the ability to write delete files which I don't want I only want THOSE users to have read There is no way that I know of to add a user from another MACHINE to a group on an XP Pro machine IE xpmaxhine userxyz I do NOT want to open up the win machine for any file or printer sharing at this time No one in my household needs to get to it for any reason I only want them to have the correct access to the XP Pro machine I am sure I have confused you nice folks more than I needed to but I am trying to be explicit as possible Any suggestions or help much appreciated Thanks PS Hopefully in a few months when the budget allows I'll have a NAS box and this point will be moot

I've heard a lot about Directaccess and wanted to give it a try but I can't find it anywhere. I know it's included in Windows 7 Ultimate but has anyone actually seen/used it?? Or is this a feature that's only going to be available with the final release?

Is this what you're talking about? Not much info on it.

I have two computers, one an Advent 4211-B netbook and the other an Acer Aspire 5920g laptop, both running Windows 7 Home Premium (completely up to date) and AVG Internet Security.

The two computers are part of a Home network which also includes a Sky Router, Lexmark S605 network printer and a WD 2TB NAS drive.

Everything on the network is visible to all other items on the the network.

I have installed WD Anywhere Backup Pro software on both and the backups are carried out as expected.

If I use the URL http:\\192.160.0.3 when on the Advent I access the NAS control panel OK.

If I use the same URL on the Aspire I get the following error:

UNKNOWN 503 Server temporarily overloaded Date: Tue, 23 Nov 2010 12:17:41 GMT Cache-Control: no-cache,no-store Content-Type: text/html; charset=%s Connection: close
503 Server temporarily overloaded
The server cannot process the request due to a high load.

Can anyone shed any light on this problem?

The only similar thead is the one in the link below which had to do with MTU size. The Technet link in the thread below may have other solutions.

To make things more complicated win7 wlan

Hi, I am new to this forum and was hoping someone could help me with a MS Excel problem.
I have an Excel file stored on a floppy disk which I tried to access the other day, when the following message appeared.

'magazine.xls' cannot be accessed.
The file may be read-only, or you may be trying to access a read-only location. Or the server the document is stored on may not be responding.

Any help would be grateful, many Thanks.

Hello, I just purchased a laptop with Vista Home Premium 64 bit, and my desktop uses XP. Can I export and access all my contacts and messages from my desktop to my laptop? I've tried several times, and can't seem to get it. Thanks!!

A:Accessing Email between 2 OS

Hello supernova, and welcome to the forums.

You should be able to email all the contact information to yourself, or export it to a flash drive. Do you have an iPod touch? If so, you could sync it to those contacts, and export it to the other computer. Someone else here may have a better suggestion, but both of those should work...
