Preferred Solution: accessing an old registry

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

is there I way I can take a look through my old registry, wich is now on my secondary drive

just to clear this up, I have a bunch of games and mods of games on my old drive that wont work now, but I think they wont work because of missing keys in the registry

I had a similar problem a some time ago after I moved some drives around, and changed some drive letters, and eventually found out that it could be solved just by changing a drive letter in a registry key to match the drive that the game is now on

but after this fresh XP install on a brand new drive, I cant find the path to these keys in my registry (cuz its a new registry from a fresh install on a new drive)

I know if I could browse my old registry, I could find this area, and make matching registry keys to make my games work

and yes I could just reinstall all the games, but theres a few of em, and alot of mods, and it would just be less of a pain in the *** this way, rather than haveing to reinstall mods and settings/controll configurations/video settings and all that kind of stuff I would be faceing

wait, just got a brain storm, if I reinstall just one of the games on the new drive, without deleteing the others, then the key would be in the registry, then I could find it, and change it to mach the old copy of the game ...maybe

but Id still like to know how to browse my old registry if possible, just out of curiosity, is it possible ?Click to expand...

Hi motherboard1,

Anything is possible! In order to do what you want, you would more than likely need a Win32 API program to do it which points to your old registry files on the slave disk.

Here is some VBS code you could download and modify to suit your needs:

I have joined a computer (PC1) to a domain control server (2008), and user able to login using their domain user account - although recently I have found out that even though the computer (PC1) do not connect to a server, user still able to access using their domain account.
Is there a way for me to restrict domain account user from accessing the computer (PC1) if they are disconnected from server?
Hope my explanation make sense to you guyz.

Thank in advance

A:Prevening domain user from accessing Computer

Lots to be considered. Joining a domain is intended to give the company admin configuration control of all the company users.
This is normal, expected and even proper for the company to do this.

restrict domain account userClick to expand...

hmm; only the company admin should be able to do this and almost always it is done using some scripts, NOT by loggin into your PC. So - - who is accessing your PC remotely, the admin - - how do you know this occurs?

PCs joined to a domain usually get a replacement for PC Login - - the network form and that creates a link to the domain controller.

I have a Dell desktop with wifi. It can see the AP (very strong signal), but it cannot access the internet ("limited conductivity"). I tried cycling power on the modem and AP which helped temporarily. Reboot does nothing. There are 3 other notebooks that have full access to the internet thru wifi to the same AP and cable modem.

The Dell has Vista op sys, and I've run thru all the diagnostics with no real solution. This pc normally uses a wired connection with no problem.

What should I look at to get this going?

Hi I optical drives Accessing external on computer? have a Dell Dimension which recently died of a failed motherboard It has two optical drives a floppy and a zip And yes I still sometimes find I need to access data off an old floppy or zip I would like to salvage these media drives for use Accessing optical drives on external computer? with my Toshiba laptop I know I can buy external enclosures Accessing optical drives on external computer? for the drives but with four of them the cost will begin to add up Plus I don t even know if enclosures for internal floppies and zips exist I was wondering if it would be possible to connect the laptop directly to the dead Dell and access the drives Although the motherboard is no good the power supply seems to be fine Basically the old Dell would be functioning as large powered enclosure for multiple drives If so how would I go about it I already have an Ativa data transfer USB cable if that helps Thanks H nbsp

A:Accessing optical drives on external computer?

No, you can't do what you are asking.

Does your Toshiba have an optical drive? If so you'd only need to buy an adapter/enclosure for the zip and floppy, but really I think it probably would cost the same just to buy ones that are already external rather than something to turn your internals to externals.

I have been using a Eminent Network Media Tank with a built-in WD 1TB hard drive that is FAT32 for some time now. As I have some new content I want to add to it I connected it to my notebook. I installed the drivers from the Eminent CD to make windows recognize the drive (a program called IFS drives was installed into the configuration screen). In the my computer screen I can now see the drive with the disk letter I appointed to it (Z) but when I try to open the drive windows says: "Dirve Z is not formatted, do you want to format the drive now?". Evidently I don't want to format the drive, I just want to access it and add new data. Does anyone know why windows says this and (more importantly) how I can achieve my goal without formatting?

Thanks in advance!

I'm having a strange problem with my main computer. I can log onto AOL and read my e-mail, but I can't open websites. I get a "navigation to the webpage was canceled" message. I've tried various remedies but nothing has worked. The connection is fine, the hardware is fine. I did recently discover a quirk, however...if I go to a saved link to a login page requesting a password, it not only opens that page, it allows me to continue to use that site once I've entered the password. I only have two such links, so there are two sites I can still access.

Any suggestions? I'd rather not have to wipe the thing and start over... Thanks!

A:Any registry editor tweaks?

Are you running xp or vista? Also unless you have a lot of clutter or malware key embedded in your registry there is really no tweak to really see an improvement in performance.
If there is clutter or malware that can and will slow the response of the computer.
I myself use a freeware program called regcleaner to clear out all the clutter that will build up over time. That sounds more like what you need than a tweak.
Hope this helps.

XP operating system, protected disk area . . .

I want to access files in the XP NTFS System (Protected Area). If I do a "Restore" for any reason, I get everything in the factory-supplied partition, which is a nuisance. Periodically, all I want to do is go into the protected area for a file or two. I do not need a whole lot of junk that I will subsequently delete once the "Restore" is completed (such as "Try & Buy", eg, Corel, etc.). The so-called "options" restore menu is ridiculously small and hasn't anything worth restoring from it. I need a comprehensive list of stuff in the 10gig partition. I have an 80gig drive, 10 gigs used for the system itself. Can I use a function to at least do a "copy & paste" from this area?

If you're report is correct, then likely that you are discovering a nearby neighbor's router with the same ssid.

you should use a wire connect, access the router and change the ssid to something
person (ie not the default) AND the admin password. Save and restart the router.

I have an oldish PC (circa 2000) which has died.

It ran Windows ME. The HDD is Seagate. [40GB Seagate St340823A]

I am wondering if I can salvage the HDD, at least to the extent of recovering some data from it.

I realise that one way would be to take another PC, and to add the drive in there.

But I was wondering if it is possible to buy an external hard drive and to use that instead.

Ideally, I'd like to know if there are any which come with spare space which can be easily used.

But failing that, how easy would it be to take the HDD out of an external drive, then temporarily insert the HDD from the old PC (so as to retrieve data) and then put the external drive back to its original condition?

I would treat the flash drive as suspect from here on in. Take it back to the machine where you saved it to the drive and open it there - if you can do this it may only have been a permissions issue but if you can, try another drive. You might recover the drive with a format once you have your file safe.

A:Problem Accessing Some Sites Via Belkin

Can you check that you definitely have a connection by going to another site that you have never visited before? Sometimes it can seem like the connection is working, when actually its just getting the pages from your cache. (Although, if you posted that message from one of the PC's then you definitely have a connection).

If you are definitely connected, but you can't see some specific sites, I would struggle to help. If you don't have any software that might be interfering (pop up blockers / firewall / virus / spyware / adware / cookie blocker / any software that basically blocks a site if it doesn't like something about it), then its most likely a setting in the router. I once had that issue and someone fixed it for me, but I forgot what its called... If I remember, I'll post back.

I frequently help my friends fix their computers. Is there any software/capability to be able to run a firewire/ethernet cable to their pc and access their computer. I'm sure there is software out there I am just not sure of it. All suggestions would be helpful. I am to the point where it would be easier with the amount of computers i work on, to hook up my laptop to access there stuff.

A:Help with accessing computers with software

I assume u are using WindowsXP, go to the Control Panel, System, then to system properties and to remote and check this in all the systems. the other computers will have to e-mail u when they need help but once done u will have complete controll over there computer and be able to see the computer as if it was the one in front of u.

I have replaced an NT primary domain controller with a server I still have an Nt server as an application server and NT server 4 Domain in accessing 2003 a as a Backup Domain Controller It has been running fine until I add a new user that was never in the old domain Any new users that get added cannot authenticate to the NT server All the previous users were already in the accessing NT 4 server in a 2003 Domain BDC when I change over I cannot figure out why I can authenticate as Administrator and any old users I have sp a loaded someone said this would help and have even added the new users to the Domain Admin group but still nothing I cannot upgrade the Nt server as the application is an ERP system that is run throughout the company and I am told will not be supported in anything other than the NT environment If I add users on the NT first it updates the PDC just fine but I still can t access the shares Any Ideas Rdb nbsp

A:accessing NT 4 server in a 2003 Domain

Try demoting the NT4 server so it is no longer a DC and integrating it through DNS into your network.

Because your NT4 server is PDC, there is alot to do in order to keep the NT4 server as a DC and integrate it into a Server 2003 Schema AD network.
It is really not worth doing to be honest! Your NT4 server should run fine as a server, but not as a DC within your Server 2003 environment.

I don't know why this is happening, but maybe someone can help. I have a HP dv8000 laptop running wireless through a linksys router. Most programs that need to connect (AVG, Spybot, iTunes, etc.) keep telling me that my network is not available. I don't have this trouble with the same programs on my desktop. Another example is that most games (except CounterStrike, for whatever reason) won't connect in multiplayer mode. Any ideas??

Thanks in advance-

Make sure you don't use third party software for wireless connection. Use XP Wireless connection is faster.

Those a drops you're getting with the wireless connection either it coming from the router or something is making it happen. Micowave 2.4Ghz wireless phone things like that...

I have no way to get into my computer to fix the problem. If I put in my XP CD (if I can find it) won't I have to click on something to fix the problem? How can I do that when I have no input device. Before we do anything, does the keyboard work enough to get you into the BIOS, if so then before windows XP boots to the splash screen, just after the post screen, hold down F8 to go into the startup actions screen and choose "last known good config" and see if that works, if not try "safe mode"

Boot from the XP CD and go to the recovery console, your mouse and keyboard will work as XP isnt using the damaged drivers at this point, once in the recovery console enter "SFC /scannow" without the prompts and hit enter, XP will check all the system files and should replace any missing ones.

Or read this MS article about recovering from a registry fault.

Thats all I can suggest

Since I've got(for 4 months) my Adaptec 1205SA(SiI3112A) controller card and my WD WD800JD, I've had to re-install Windows 2000 at least 15 times.

Either c:\winnt\system32\config\system or c:\winnt\system32\config\software are becoming corrupted.

Now that I backup my registry(Using Linux or recuperation console), it's less a pain, but it's still annoying.

If I stop the computer using the ATX button, it will say "Saving current settings..." for 1/2 a second and shut down before the popup disappears. Microsoft calls this an emergency shut down, but on every other computers I have using Windows 2000, it's not doing this.

What I suppose to be the problem is the greyed "Enable disk caching" box in the Windows HDD settings because I never got a problem in Mandrake Linux 10.1.

I'd like to know what keys that the video card tweak programs alter.

A:Registry Entries - Video Card Tweaks

Here is something that might be of interest to you:

What registry keys does the GeforceTweak use to modify the driver settings?
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\NVIDIA Corporation"
Under WinXP the keys are different on each pc (as I know yet). Simply try to search the registry for the entry "FSAAQuality". If it cannot be found, tweak the FSAA settings and repeat the search.
When you use non-NVidia drivers the kegkeys will be a little bit different.

It seems that most of the Nvidia settings are in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\NVIDIA Corporation folder in your registry. I would look here for the OpenGL and DirectX settings also, although I'm not exactly sure they're there. I'll do some more looking and get back to you.

Another thing that might interest you is the 3DS GeForce Tweak Guide found here:

One last thing, exactly what video card are you using?

I've changed the permissions to give administrators full control of this key but it still throws me the same error. I changed the permissions likewise on the parent key HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\InternetShortcut and can create a new subkey directly under that key but the same settings don't work on the shell subkey.

A:Registry cleaning software

You don't really need to worry about registry cleaners, they often cause more problems than they fix. Modern operating systems (W7 in particular) Don't really need to have their registry's cleaned.

However if you must use one, try CCleaner by Piriform:
I have also used their defrag tool quite a bit, Defraggler:

Ccleaner offers a registry backup utility before cleaning. As always, I highly recommend doing this, and making sure you have proper backups in order just in case anything goes awry.

Hope this helps

Since I am a tech newbie, I've been checking many reviews like and most of them seem to recommend Registry Easy, or ACA Utilities.

I hope you guys can advise me what registry cleaner to choose, if choose at all?

download CCleaner - it's free and has a registry cleaner

what program is telling you that you have 300 problems?

Hi there,

due to some complete mishap, I was forced to reinstall Windows XP. Before doing so, I did a system backup, so I could restore all files. The problem is the registry. Due to the new install, many applications will not report as installed and request that I install them anew. But I got a copy of the old registry file (system32\config\software) in the backup. Is there any program that would allow me to edit this file and export those keys I need to a .reg file?

A:Progam to transfer selected keys from old registry file to .reg file?

You are asking for more trouble... You should have created an image of the entire hard drive, and restored that image to a "clean" formatted drive. You could spend hours and days editing the registry, but even this wouldn't guarantee success

I have registry problems, (again) and i was wondering if anybody knew of a free registry cleaner which fixes faults for FREE i have tried a few of the main ones but they all require registering and paying 30+
any reccomendations?, any posts appreciated.

A:Over 350 registry promlems (again)

If a piece of software messes up as regards sorting registry problems you are likely to have a computer which doesn't work. I received a fully functioning 6 months free trial version of Registry Mechanic with a magazine. I was impressed enough to buy the program. Ccleaner is freeware which will tidy things up but probably not as well as something you've paid for.

I was reading about how uninstalling programs does not mean the registry is cleared of entries that are no longer needed and about how this can slow down your machine.

Are there any reliable programs that can identify and delete the unnecessary entries?

I don't mind buying one as long as it would be effective and not mess up my machine.

A:Are there reliable programs for cleaning your registry?

Standard belief is that CC Cleaner from Piriform is the best. But use and registry cleaner with caution.

There are so many of these progs around. I have tried a couple - currently have System Cleaner installed, and CCcleaner in the past. Several before that. I am running Japanese XP Pro and when I used the registry cleaner with Ccleaner I had all sorts of problems. I ended up having to do a restore from Acrosis.

I am wondering whether any of the specialists amongst you could suggest a prog that is very, very good for cleaning my registry?

A:Registry cleaners

Registry cleaners are a real minefield, with lots of potential to screw up your system, as you already found out with your Ccleaner experience.

Personally, I don`t recommend you use a reg cleaner at all. Any so called benefits are far out weighed by the potential damage to your system.

But, if you absolutely have to, then only delete regkeys that you know for a fact are safe to do so. In other words, don`t let the programme decide for you, which regkeys it deletes. Also, always make a backup of your registry before any cleaning is done. Creating a new system restore point is also advisable.

Hi, any idea which is a good registry defragmenter or fixer on the internet? Thanks!

A:Registry Fixer or Defrag

lots of them.

two I recommend are CCleaner and glarysoft registry repair. Both are open source and free.

for a defrag - use defraggler - also free.

try for opensource alternatives.

I installed a trial version this utility called Registry Booster 2 by Uniblue that is supposed to be a good registry cleaner. Reason i brought this up is because i already have RegCleaner, RegScrubXP and a regcleaning utility in CCleaner, however after i cleaned the registry using those 3 the Registry booster found over 200 registry issues. As you guys already know, RegCleaner is a manual cleaner so one must know what to remove, RegScrubXP has an issue finder as well as a manual cleaner and the utility in CCleaner automatically finds issues and one can choose what to remove. Registry booster is like that too though it finds more issues than the other programs, though this program is not free, its 29.99. is this a good registry cleaning program? If not can someone recomend something else?

I don't mind paying for a good registry cleaner since i know that neglecting this issue could cause problems.

A:A good registry cleaner?

I think CCleaner is one of the best out there personally! Sorry I can't recommend anything else really.

That`s just spam/spyware trying to get you to buy a program

or install some spyware.

The only program you ever need for the registry is CCleaner (Issues tab). It`s free.

A:Accessing printer on different subnetwork

This is a VPN issue. BY DESIGN, the VPN will take over the default route and send everything (browser, email and share access) to the remote VPN server.

This is done to protect the VPN server environment from the local host being accessed via one of it's shares or other NIC card.

A:Registry Handle Leak Hangs

Do you have the most recent version of Sandboxie installed?
What anti-virus, firewall are you using?  Any chance that you have an Internet Security Suite installed (Norton, McAfee, etc...)?
I've seen those types of entries many, many times - including in my own systems; on my systems at least, they were rather benign messages.
I would suspect freezing is due to "unknown hardware failure" - maybe RAM or HDD; possibly even heat.
Event Viewer logs primarily record OS, software & security related items.  About the closest think you'll find to hardware failure in the EVTX logs - I/O errors.
Be sure that all Windows Updates are installed as well.

Hello all,
I am new to this site, so please forgive any rookie mistakes. I recently bought a new computer to upgrade from my old one. The old computer then proceeded to completely break on me. I took out the old computer's hard drive and then installed it as a slave in the new computer. Now I am trying to access my files in it. The problem is that the folder I need to get into is the user profile folder in Documents and Settings (I have Windows XP) which says access is denied. Is there a way I can open it and get around whatever type of protection is on the folder? Thanks.

And so I was going to jacking it in my computer.
But the problem is, is that, I was wondering..If I could access the files and programs that were on that hardrive, while using the Windows that is on my current hardrive.
Like, use the internal hardrive like a external hardrive.

Give me as much feedback as possible.

A:Registry error

could be a bogus message altogether.

go to your Event Viewer
cp->Admin Tools-->Computer Management->Event Viewer
look for ERRORS first, then warnings.
if you find errors, clock the copy to clipbook button and then paste into a Notepad window -- copy 3-4 errors
now follow up with your findings
