Preferred Solution: microsoft windows server 2003 for small business server Service Pack 1

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi,

I have a set of 5 machines - 2 desktops (one being a thin client and the other to function as a 'server' ) and 3 notebooks. I was wondering what was the difference b/w the 2 versions Windows Server 2003 and Windows Small Business Server 2003. Is it true one cannot use a thin client but need a regular cpu setup to use Small Business Server 2003 ?

There is a difference in costs and since i have windows 2000 on the desktops and xp on the notebooks wondered if i needed to shell out so much more $$ for the Windows Server 2003 . I plan to put in a wireless networking system to link all the 5 machines.

Thanks in advance for any and all advise.

A:Solved: Difference b/w Windows Server 2003 and Small Business Server 2003

Windows Server 2003 for Small Business Server has the following restrictions:
- Only one computer in a domain can be running Windows Server 2003 for Small Business Server.
- Windows Server 2003 for Small Business Server must be the root of the Active Directory® forest.
- Windows Server 2003 for Small Business Server cannot trust any other domains.
- A Windows Server 2003 for Small Business Server domain cannot have any child domains.
- Each additional server must have a Windows Small Business Server 2003 client access license (CAL). You can use CALs for each user or for each device.
The standard edition of Windows Small Business Server 2003 includes Windows Server 2003 technologies, including fax service, firewall service, and remote-access service. Additionally, it includes Microsoft Exchange Server 2003, enhanced tools for server monitoring and administration, and an out-of-the-box solution for internal Web sites. The standard edition is ideal for customers who do not require the higher-level functionality included in the premium edition

The premium edition includes everything in the standard edition, plus Microsoft SQL Server 2000, Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server 2000, and Microsoft FrontPage® 2003. The premium edition is ideal for small businesses with more demanding IT needs, such as data-intensive line-of-business applications, or advanced firewall and Web-caching capabilities

The standard edition has most of the stuffs inside.

Hey guys,

I have a Small Business Server 2003 STD in a HP ML330 Server.

I have a good one for you all!

Its a standard install of SBS2003, it only seams to run 32-bit software applications, and it will NOT run 16-bit applications, this includes 16-bit setup.exe files!

Need help on this, cant figure it out!

Thanks for all your input.

well as far as I know setting it up will be just like a wired network. are you asking for information on how to set up the server to control user access and file sharing?

Hey guys,

I was wondering if any knows of the incompatibilities/issues when trying to connect to a Windows SBS 2003 using SMB. I have a client that is trying to scan a document via a copier to a network folder but even though the machine has the correct domain user name, password, permissions and hostname/folder details, it will give an authentication error. On this particular copier, you have the option to browse to the folder, but this also fails.

I do know that the scan to folder option works, because we have had the copier scanning to individual PCs before. One of my colleagues who is on vacation had something similar happen to him, but obviously I cannot get in contact with him.

Any advice would be great.

A:SMB & Windows Small Business Server 2003

It appears to be a common problem; most of the info I found is that the Digitial Signing would need to be turned to disabled in Domain Controller Default Policy. Though this did not help this machine, it looks like what would cause the issue.

My Server won't shut down.

My Remote Access Router exe will not activate or come up.

I think I want to 'clean' the entire Server and start over. How can I safely do this?

This computer must be configured as a domain controller. It will be shut down in 30 minutes. To prevent this computer from shutting down, run Setup on the disk that you used to install the operating system to configure the computer as a domain controller.

I am unable to change user and or admin passwords logged in as either. It returns an error, of not being able to find the specified file. I am curious as to the correct procedure and or troubleshooting advice at rectifying this issue.?

Also, In exchange 2003 what is the easiest way to make exchange user email boxes available to mobile users from the outside (like pop3 email), as opposed to requiring them to login in to the remote web access module to check mail. Many would prefer to open Microsoft Outlook and click send / receive, and have it automatically download the email.

Just found MS Small Business Server 2003 180 Day Trial version in a draw.
Anyone used it? Is it worth playing with? And comes with FrontPage2003?
Or just very nice coasters??

A:Small Business Server 2003

Yep, just coasters

You can get SBS 2008, Server 2012, etc... trials for free from the net. SBS 2003 is over 10 years old now, so I don't think it would be worth tinkering with if you can run some of the later trials.

Hi, my existing network has 3 pc runnin win 2000 with dos client; and a server runnin a dos dispatch/accounting operating system as a workgroup network. I bought a new dispatch/accounting application that requires Windows Server. How do i configure windows Small Business Server 2003 so i can continue to use my old dispatch system and add a xp workstation and a server running SBS 2003 and my new dispatch software. I would like to be able to migrate my customer data base from old to new over a period of time but keep my operation running.I understand my new server will be the domain server which i will setup with 2 nic cards, a DSL router with a static IP. How do i set up my LAN so all 5 pc share data from both servers?

A:small business server 2003

A few ideas -

Since the SBS is set to be on a domain. I would say you could leave it on the domain and leave all PC's on the Workgroup you have then you will need to make sure to setup the permissions on the server so you can connect in to the drives and application that resides on it...

Does this new application run directly off the server or does it just require a network drive mapping?

If the application is loaded directly on the server and can be ran on it and it does not have to be housed on a client PC. Then you can Remote Desktop into the SBS server and load the 2000 clients with the Remote Desktop Client found here - http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/tools/rdclientdl.mspx and then be connected diretly to the server and do what you need to. Then over time as you go to the new system fully you can add machines to the domain and then phase out the dos app.

Quick question on Win 2k3 Small business server do I just have to "reset" my computer do get the license back? I accidently deleted WS03 and now the server thinks on my domain that WS03 is still active, can I correct that and get that license back to? I'm better on software with apps than on OS's to be honest and my server experience is pretty basic up til now. See attached. I only have 10 licenses and am thinking of adding another user. I figure this is a pretty basic question if someone knows how to restore a computer and then reset it on the server, or do I have to find the machine in question and do something first? Thanks in advance

I have configured a server with Windows Small Business Server 2003. I have set it up to run using a workgroup and not domain. Now periodically the server shutsdown on its own listing the above mentioned Event ID which indicate that ;

"this computer must be configured as a domain controller"

Microsoft's description states that this is the cause of the servers operating system integrated setup was not complete. This is the only server on the network and otherwise the network itself has been running fine outside of the periodic shutdowns.

My question is how can this be done now after the fact and what dtepsd must be taken?

Thank you for any help you can provide.

Hi,
Over the last few weeks my Server has blue screened twice and rebooted. I downloaded BlueScreenViewer and it looks like they were caused by two different devices/software.

The first:
Bug Check String: DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
Caused by driver: afd.sys

The second:
Bug Check String: KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED
Caused by driver: SysPlant.sys

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thank god it was that easy. No virus found after logging in.

Note: The WAP ethernet configuration is not available, so I have to access it through the CD-ROM wizzard. Any help or suggestions would be helpful!

We had one machine in a -machine cluster get a stop error last friday The app support people helped me to shift all services over to the other server but then I wanted to load balance again They told me I would have to install SP and all the updates on both before we could So I Cannot 2003 2 back roll Server pack service did and we restarted Then once he tried to activate the other server in the cluster the failed one would not cooperate They kept reporting duplicate IP addresses and thus would not work So we put it back Cannot roll back Server 2003 service pack 2 the way it was and looked at the failed one I could not access the network connections to config the interfaces and I could not uninstall programs I booted into safe mode and I can see the adapters but I still cannot roll back the SP or uninstall programs When I try to uninstall SP in safe mode it tells me that there is a file missing It doesn t specify which one When I try to re-install SP it tells me there is a file missing It doesn t specify which one When I try to uninstall SP in Cannot roll back Server 2003 service pack 2 normal windows it just hangs at inspecting configuration Same w re-install I have tried uninstalling through the command prompt also Same thing If I stick my thumb drive in there it hangs at installing that So there is something terribly wrong with this machine Reinstalling windows from scratch is NOT an option right now because there is Oracle software and settings on here that the vendor Cannot roll back Server 2003 service pack 2 will charge out the a to reinstall Any ideas of what I can try Besides wiping out windows nbsp

I experienced a server crash last night In lieu of wiping out the whole hard 2000 Crash Business Windows Server Small drive I created a new installation of the server on the same hard drive I set the server up the same same domain and everything but now the computers that are pointed to that domain controller do not recognize the domain I believe most of the files from the Windows 2000 Small Business Server Crash first install are still intact so I pretty much have two installations and am given a dual boot option for the server Is there a way to move the users over from one installation to the Windows 2000 Small Business Server Crash other The crashed installation is called WINNT and the fresh installation is called WINNT I still have the shares set up on the drive so not everything got lost but Windows 2000 Small Business Server Crash I was wondering if there was a way to move over the information from one management console to the other so that I do not have to recreate the users The only way that I can get the computers to recognize the domain again is by unjoining and rejoining the domain Thanks for any help that anyone can provide nbsp

As simple as it sounds, all I had to do was unplug the users CAT-5 from their computers, log them into the Network (to get profiles saved on local machines), then plug in the CAT-5 and let Windows XP ask me for current credentials on users, requiring a lock of the computer (Ctrl, Alt, Del, then Enter to lock) and entrance of the proper credentials.

Hi,

Been trying to get a answer to a very simple question but couldn't find anything conlcusive.

Basically i am wondering if you would be able to install .net Framework 1.1 in a Windows Small Business Server 2008.

From what i can tell .net Framework is 32bit and SBS 2008 is a 64 bit native operating system. Cannot run 32bit applications?

I would appreciate if someone can tell for sure if i am right on my assumptions.

Thanks!

Hi,

A Small Business Server was demoted from Primary Domain Controller to Secondary Domain Controller.

Since then, it has been unable to contact the network. Pinging the network produces a HARDWARE ERROR in dos.

The network connection is working, and a replacement network card produces the same issue.

Do you know what is causing this?

Thank,

Steve

A:Windows Small Business Server PING HARDWARE ERROR

Windows only does primary domain controller emulation. There is no such thing as a primary domain and secondary domain controllers anymore, that was an NT thing. If what you did was demote it and remove active directory, then I would check to make sure the static IP for the now member server is not pointing to itself for DNS.

I recently replaced our Windows Small Business Server 2003 with a Windows Small Business Server 2011 Essentials server using the same domain name and same computer name. When I tried to join an existing Windows 7 Professional computer to the new domain,

Hi,

According the issue, I suspect that your machine created a new user profile in this case. The user profile path is stored in registry, here
is the path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList(check the picture).  Please check the value of ProfileImagePath.

Hello all I m not sure if this is an operating system question or more of a software development question Anyway I have a legacy COM service a COM server 2003 Server execution Windows - connecting when on service DCOM "Server failed" that runs as a windows service that was written for Windows NT I have managed to use the service on both Windows and Windows XP unchanged However I now wish to run the service on a Windows Server machine and I can t seem to DCOM service on Windows Server 2003 - "Server execution failed" when connecting get it to work This is what happens - Install the service and set it to log on using a domain account Start the service from the services msc applet Start the client application and connect to the service At this stagte the client applicaiton freezes for approximately seconds and DCOM service on Windows Server 2003 - "Server execution failed" when connecting then returns with the error message quot Server execution failed quot I ve also tried using the client whilst the service is stopped In this case when I connect the service is started but I get the same error The development team also provided a standalone application that hosts the exact same COM objects mainly for debugging purposes If I use the standalone application everything works fine Its all very strange Does anyone have any idea what the cause might be And preferably a solution Thanks Kep nbsp

A:DCOM service on Windows Server 2003 - "Server execution failed" when connecting

I found the answer.

http://msdn.microsoft.com/newsgroup...-DC48AB0DA5C9&dglist=&ptlist=&exp=&sloc=en-us

The above discussion says that a service must enter a running state before a COM server calls CoRergisterClassObject. So I guess its a development problem.

Not sure why it only manifests on Windows Server 2003 though.

Hello!

I have a friend that is starting his own business and he needs to set up a server where two computers can access the same software. Microsoft Office and Bankruptcy software are the two applications he needs the two client computers to have access to. What would be his best option to accomplish this? I have looked into MS Small Business Server (and Essentials) or Terminal Services but I am not sure what would be the best option. Or is there anything else out there I should consider.

I am an IT support tech for a company but have most of my experience in hardware.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

would windows 7 professional be enough as an OS for a small business server?

file backup
file sharing
printer connection
simple website hosting

A:small business server OS

Others may not agree, but I'm always in the mindset of using the proper tool for the job. It sounds like Server 2012 Essentials would do the job nicely.

As for website hosting, given how cheap 3rd party hosting plans are, I wouldn't consider running one inside my network anymore.

Can SBS 2003 be setup using a router to do the routing and still be able to use Outlook Web Access and Sharepoint Services?

Also can you have your website hosted on a server with a servername .local and not .com?

If you don't have the answer can you point me in the right direction?

I am setting up a server that doesn't have a static IP address and planned on using dyndns.org as a dynamic updater. I wanted to have a business card website hosted on the server too. I host my own website on my server but have a .com name for my server and cannot get the outlook web access to work. I would like to have my cake and eat it too.

After you installed the Server OS be sure you have all the current drivers for your deivces and then apply the latest service pack to the OS. Also check to make sure there is no power management stuff active in the BIOS....not a good thing on a server!!

Hi!

I have recently acquired a Dell PowerEdge server from my employer and want to use it in my music studio. Its still runing Small Business Server at the mo, therefore I want to remove the OS, format both of the drives (which are mirrored btw) and install XP.

My questions are as follows:

1. Will the format require that I have to manually re-config the mirroring - I know there is no dedicated raid card in the machine, assumption is that its taken care of by the motherboard.....?

2. Can I go about the format as I would normally?

Would greatly appreciate any advice as I have gigs of audio which I could then backup onto tapes...plus I want this machine's spec, it kicks the proverbial out of my current one!

A:Removing Small Business Server for XP

If the mirror is created on the PERC then the mirror is maintained on the bios of the raid controller. So you won't have to re-create it.

You can format as part of the OS install. I assume you will use Windows 2003 server. If you're using Win 2k you will need to install the drivers for the raid card. Do this by hitting f6 frantically when you get the blue boot screen from booting from the windows disk.

If the raid controller is a PERC you can get drivers for them by looking up the service tag on Dell's site.

Does this help?

The equipment is secondary to the capability of the application in question. You have to have a multi-user application for something like this to work. Why don't we start with the name of the application you're going to be using?

Also, I have a MyBook sitting here, which may have the files I need, but don't know if it does, how I would hook it up, etc.

Any ideas?? Can I somehow bypass the 'login' of the server (I researched online and apparently I can, but would have to have two Internets running...maybe I could do that with my router?)

I'd like to get some thoughts from anyone who has implemented XMPP for Windows server, with client software for a LAN. Ideally free software (even for small business use) but pay software is ok if that's what you've got experience with. Hello,

I work in a Architects office, we have a small network setup with Exchange Server and a File Server Machine. Our File Server is 640GB and it is almost 90% full, we used to have an IT guy but now he is gone.

It is very important for us to setup a backup system. Our network is run as follows:

1. Domain server,
2. Exchange Server
3. File Server (640GB)
4. 10-12 computers.

So what would be the best/cheap option for us to create a automatically backup of our file server. I was thinking in Setup a RAID 1, configuration in one of our computers with 2-2TB hardrives and get some software to backup the info regularly there.

We have not money to spend and we want to be able to use the hardware we already have?

Any help will be appreciated.

A:Best Backup for Small Business File Server!

In order to have an effective backup system so that the recovery time of the backed up data is efficient and so that you can recover from a disaster as efficiently as possible you will need to first need to state how much backup space you have and how these backups are going to be stored physically (Are they going to be easily stolen?) once you have that in mind you need to state what backup procedure you would like to implement since you would not have a never ending supply of backup capacity so that you can restore to any hour of any day if need be.

If you have enough storage capacity I would recommend you implement a Grandfather, Father and Son backup scheme. so that data can be retained for as long as possible and if a particular file needs to be restored from 2 months ago then it can.

Once you have chosen a backup scheme we can then help with how to backup your data. Firstly can I ask where the data you would like to backup is stored? Is it on the local server or the local machines? Also how was your data backed up previously?

Hope This Helps,
Josh

When Small Business Server 2000 is deployed, it automatically sets workstations to use the server as an internet proxy because you would be expected to use the Proxy Server built into SBS 2000. However, in most installations a NAT router is used instead. Unfortunately, SBS2000 will still occasionally set the workstations to use the server as a proxy, preventing access to the internet.

Although this can be manually corrected on each workstation by removing the proxy settings in Internet Explorer, what is the best way to fix this issue permanently? TIA.

However, the automatic update tells me there's no update available for my computer, and if I try the Windows download center, it just doesn't work, and there's a choice of 4 or 5 different SP1's which all look the same to me... Hi,

I have a small business server 2003 hardwired to a Netgear router. The server connects to the internet fine through the router and you can connect remotely to the server from anywhere in the world via the router.

However when trying to connect to the router wirelessly it will not connect. The wireless network is visible but windows reports it is unable to connect.

The server has two nic's and the one connected to router has its ip assigned by the routers dhcp but is assigned as static.

Other than trying to connect wirelessly from a laptop everything else seems to work 100% ok.

Any ideas on how to resolve this?

A:No wireless after connecting hardwired small business server

First off, I'm assuming that the laptop CAN connect using a wired connection, if not, we need to know that.
Assuming you can connect with a wired connect, this sounds like either encryption key mismatches or MAC filtering on the router.

Remove ALL stored wireless network profiles from the laptop, make SURE you know the encryption key of the router, and remove any MAC filtering configuration from the router.

Power cycle the router, reboot the laptop, and see if you can connect.

We have a SBS 2008 server hyper-v VM that crashed and now has a consistent BSOD no matter what boot option you try.

I've tried the recovery console but both sfc and startrep result in another BSOD 0x00000050

No minidumps are recorded. I've tried changing the registry but still nothing it recorded.

Not sure where to go from here. Desperately need this server fixed.

Anyone got any ideas?

The Server is 98% full on the C drive with nothing on the D drive - It must be set up incorrectly?

The Server and P.C's have Logmein Installed for remote access.

We are looking for a cost effective support service as we also have a wish list of standard things we want to do with the system.

Any Ideas?

The service packs (SP1 for 7 and SP2 for Vista) have been approved for install. Clients just don't detect that SPs being available on the server.

I ran WSUS Detection tool from Microsoft and it said 'passed' and clients are able to contact WSUS Server.

Help?

A:Windows 7 and Vista clients don't update Service pack from WSUS Server

Are they picking other updates up still?
IIRC, WSUS only downloads a minimal SP - so that the clients have to be fully updated before they will see the SP offered (but I could be wrong - it's been a while)

Hey all, hope you can help.
I have just reinstalled small business server 2000 on a server, and all was running fine. Exchange has suddenly stopped routing mail to the internal clients. The POP3 connector appears to be pulling mail in fine (I have tested it, and the hosted POP3 account is being dequeued when Exchange synchronises), but it's not getting pulled into Outlook by any of the 6 clients PC's on the Network, so remaining on the server quque. It is not being routed to the PRIV1 file in Exchsvr.
I have logging set to maximum, and I can't locate the problem. Maybe Backoffice issue? Appreciate the help anyway.

A:Small Business Server 2000 - Exchange mail routing problem

Are you using the built in pop3 connector or is this a third party application? Does your pop3 host offer you a web based utility to check emails? Is exchange leaving them on the server there or is it deleting them out? Are you seeing where in the server they are actually stuck in a que? Have you ensured all exchange services you need are started? Have you also checked basic network/internet connectivity of this server?

Hi all,
I am trying to connect a desktop running XP media center to my office network server which runs small business server 2003. I can't seem to have any luck. Other workstations run XP Pro. I bought an upgrade disc to upgrade this MCE unit to XP Pro only to find out I am unable to do that. Is this possible to add MCE to the network or to upgrade this unit to XP Pro (MS says I can not upgrade). I have run a thread search and can't find this info. Please help me directly or refer me to the appropriate thread. Thanks

A:networking MCE desktop to business server 2003

Media center will not log onto a domain as you know... What you can do is change the workgroup name on the desktop to the workgroup/domain name of your business server, create a matching username and password on server and the desktop. If everything matches, then you should be able to see any shares on the server available to you. I'd disable the windows firewall (and the computer browser, both found under services in admin tools) on the workstation.

If you want to load xp pro, i'm pretty sure you have to format the workstation and load from scratch.

A:Windows 8.1, Microsoft 2003 server, and folder redirection

I find hot fixes that seem to relate to this problem.

Incompatibility between Windows 8 roaming user profiles and roaming profiles in other versions of Windows

Windows 8.1 V3 Roaming Profiles

Windows 8 and 8.1 now has another version of roaming profiles which are incompatible with the Windows Vista/7 versions (Incompatibility between Windows 8 roaming user profiles and roaming profiles in other versions of Windows). As of the November 2013 Windows 8.1 update there is now a registry key you can set to spawn a .v3 profile to avoid conflicts with older versions of the profile. This registry key is a DWORD Value called “UseProfilePathExtensionVersion” with a value of “1″ and needs to be created under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlset\Services\ProfSvc\Parameters key. This can be then be deployed using the Group Policy Preferences Registry Extension that is targeted to the Windows 8.1 Computers.

I have loaded Certificate Server off of the NT Option Pack onto my IIS 4.0 Web Server. I get a message on startup that the Certificate Authority Service cannot find a database. It gives me a 7000 and 7004 error. I looked up the problem on Technet and all I can find are a reference in the SP 4 Release Notes which says that there are no workarounds for the problem. Surely to Bill I am not going to have to remove Service Pack 5 and put Service Pack 3 on my Web Server in order to get Certificate Server to work! Has anyone else experienced this problem trying to run Certificate Server on later SP's? Does anyone know a workaround for this problem?

Currently we are on an NT network with a few 2000 servers tossed in. Today I learned that the plan is to migrate everything to Linux. Lets assume that this only applies to the servers and that the users will still operate with 98/nt/2000/xp. What are your thoughts on this?

I put this in this forum for a reason. Because I'd rather get the advice from 2000 and 2003 experts who know what Linux cannot replace than to hear the Linux fanboys and anti-Microsoft activists praise it to the high heavens.

What would your concerns be if this was done on your network? What problems have you encountered if you'd tried this? Or what successes? Know of any businesses that have done this successfully?

A:Urgent & Business Critical - Server 2003 infected with undetectable botnet

Nevermind folks - it turned out to be from something spoofing a company address. Thousands of spam emails were sent out from a spoof address and they all bounced back to an address that didn't exist on our servers, our Exchange server then sent an NDR out again to those addresses and we were stuck in a loop. All sorted now though.

You can read about and download it from here.

If you're still using Windows Installer 3.0, you'll need to upgrade to Windows Installer 3.1 first. You can download it from here.

(If I recall correctly, you'll need to insert the Office 2003 CD during the upgrade process, unless you're fortunate to still have the "Office setup files" saved in the Disk Cleanup list and haven't deleted them. If you don't have either, I don't believe the upgrade process will complete successfully)
