Windows 7 Ultimate updates and SSD question

Q: Windows 7 Ultimate updates and SSD question

I have a 128gb samsung SSD. I was wondering what updates I can remove to get more space on the SSD because windows7+all updates are currently using half of the SSD space and somehow only 119gb of the SSD space is displayed so I'm guessing that 8gb is reserved or something.
I'm currently removing the extra languages and those are giving me and extra 5,5gb space

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Windows 7 Ultimate updates and SSD question

Somehow I think you have more installed than Windows and updates. Internet Explorer, Bing Bar, and Bing Desktop are the only updates I have hidden. All other Windows Updates have been installed. I wouldn't put all the blame on WIndows, if you have an install using 60GB.

Anyone with more than 8GB memory and still has Pagefile and Hibernation, by default has more than 16GB used by these two files alone. I recommend using them only if needed. I personally don't need them and have removed them both.

Check and see if you have a Hibernation file. If you don't use hibernation features, the file can be removed.

Windows 7 ? Delete Hibernation File (hiberfil.sys)
To turn off or disable hibernation, type the following command at the prompt:
powercfg ?h off
This will disable hibernation and will remove the hiberfil.sys file from your system.Click to expand...

Monitor your memory usage and if you have more memory than you ever use. The Pagefile can be minimized. I currently have mine turned off, with 8GB installed. But caution though if you turn the Pagefile off, Windows will not be able to compensate for a shortage of memory and the Windows session will crash. While I am comfortable not using a Pagefile, I do not recommend others do the same until they are comfortable doing so. I recommend lowering the Pagefile size to 1GB, and if Windows needs more, the size will be automatically adjusted.

Hi....
I need some assistance with the updates that are trying to install on my system. There are 5 important updates that the system is trying to do. But after I try to install them, it says that updates have failed. These updates are as following:
1. Security Update for Microsoft Office Excel 2007
2. Security Update for the 2007 Microsoft Office System
3. Security Update for the 2007 Microsoft Office System
4. Security Update for the 2007 Microsoft Office System
5. Update for Microsoft Office Word 2007

I don't know what to do from here... this issue is persistant and is constantly building more updates that the system is not capible of updating. Any suggestions would be most helpful.
Sincerely,
sleath2009

Hi,
Welcome to TSF.

Go to the Microsoft download site and search for the KB numbers for the updates. Then download and install locally. I had the same problem with Windows 7 x86 but not x64.

A:Windows 7 Ultimate UPDATES from Microsoft!

If the key doesnt activate, you will know right away. Then you will have to buy a new key/DVD.

I would back up all the data from that computer first, because when and if activation fails, you will have very limited use of the computer.

Hello,

I don't know how to fix the errors in my CheckSUR log, and it would be very much appreciated if someone could supply the files and instructions.

Here is the error code that I got when trying to manually install SP1, if it's any help: trust_e_nosignature 0x800b0100

A:Can't download ~50 updates, including SP1 - Windows 7 Ultimate x64

Please also run the SFC and post the CBS.log file.

SFC -System File Checker -Instructions

Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories

Right-click on the Command Prompt entry

Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the ElevatedCommand Prompt window should pop up.

At the Command prompt, type

SFC /SCANNOW

and hit the Enter key

Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages -and then reboot.

Copy the CBS.log file created(C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log) to your desktop (you can't manipulate itdirectly) and then compress the copy and attach it to your reply.

There are a large number of problems in the CheckSUR report - and it's debatable whether it's worth trying to fix manually. The results of the SFC scan will help make a decision.

I recently installed GTX670 SLI in my machine and run some benchmarks to test it is all working.

Afterwards, I did a clean format complete re-install with Windows 7 Ultimate x64 SP1 with updates. It appears now when I shut down my machine, windows turns off the display and seems to shut down but does NOT turn off the fans/LEDs on my computer.

I then re-installed a clean windows 7, installed my drivers ONLY (no windows updates) and it shuts down/turns the computer off fine.

Not sure what is going on, some update must be causing this? Can anyone help me?

A:Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 x64 shut down not turn off after updates

Another install, something strange is happening.

When I shut down. Sometimes it works sometimes it don't.

If it don't then I have to hold power button 10 s and shut down. Then when I turn pc on it turns on for a few sec and then turns off, and then turns on again by itself and proceeds to continue to load up Windows.

Am now reinstalling and going to continue to test this.

I tried several times to install windows 7 x64 but every time I stay locked .... I can only come to the first update of service pack 1.

Using a windows 7 cd containing the service pack already one, once the installation is complete I can't check for updates. if I install a version without the first service pack, i can install the updates, but when I install the service pack 1 I no longer find updates....

Windows is in loop on "Searching updates...."

(can't find help on google, i tried all the hotfixes that I found.)

I've recently built a computer with the aid of my friend with Windows 7 Ultimate (64 bit) installed back in mid August. During this 2 month period I've noticed that Windows hasn't informed be about any updates and whenever I go to check for updates, it says to restart the computer. Another thing to note is that my copy of Windows 7 was bought back in 2011 and has not been used since then.

Asides from this, I also got a notification regarding my copy of Windows 7 isn't genuine even though I bought it.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

A:Copy of Windows 7 Ultimate isn't showing updates

Let's check the non-genuine problem first...
Please follow this tutorial and post an MGADiag report - then we can see what the problem is.

Windows Genuine and Activation Issue Posting Instructions

Ignore errors produced when clicking on the Copy button - they simply mean that the tool could not create the backup files for some reason. The data is still copied to the clipboard for pasting to your response.

Please also state the Version and Edition of Windows quoted on your COA sticker (if you have one) on the case of your machine (or inside the battery compartment), but do NOT quote the Key on the sticker!

A:Windows Vista Ultimate will not boot up after installing updates

Markyajv,
Welcome to Vista Forums!

Was your gateway having any other issues before you updated it? Virus, infection of any type? Or was it just time to upgrade?

The reason that you might be getting that disc error is because that might be a recovery disc, not an installation disc.

Try inserting you vista install disc, make sure that you are booting from the DVD drive before the harddrive. Then, when you go to install, when you are looking to see what partion to install on, make sure that you erase, not format, erase the partion. This usually helps with installation errors.

Let us know,
Ben

If you undo the hack then that should allow the updates to install.

However, if the hack is not in place - or undoing it doesn't work - then let us know, and we'll deal with the problem.

Please also...
download and save the CheckSUR tool from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821
(you'll need to look in the details for Windows 7, downloading from the Microsoft Download Center)

Run it - The tool can take anywhere from 5 mins to a couple of hours to run (or 'Install') depending on how much it has to do, and may exit silently - it may appear to freeze for most of that time, but be patient.
The result is logged in the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log file - and an archive …\checksur.persist.log file

Then zip the CheckSUR.log and upload it to your reply.

2.) Individually select the product to update or patch to install (I.E my hypothetical OE 6 question) than download and install the patch?

OR

IS EVERYONE RUNNING XP GOING TO BE PROMPTED WITH SOME MESSAGE SAYING: "ATTENTION: SP-2 IS REQUIRED FOR ALL XP UPDATES." OR, DOES THIS SP-2 MANDATORY APPLY ONLY TO RUNNING WINDOWS UPDATE OR AUTOMATIC UPDATE, meaning that we can still download individual product enhancments by going to www.microsoft.com and selecting by product or service?

I am a sole account/user (home-based and non-network) with system administrator privileges, except this status is not recognized under Windows Update > Change Settings > Important Updates. The option of selecting automatic updating
and an installation frequency/time is grayed out.  How do I fix?

A:Win7 Ultimate Sole User Administrator Privileges Not Recognized for Automatic Windows Updates

Hi KiDeb.
Did you have any changes prior this issue?
Could you confirm that Important Updates were installed before?
The possible solution could be this:
Hold WindowsKey + R
Type: ?regedit?
Hit Enter

Go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU
Find AUOptions.
Right Click Modify

You can change the values data from 1 through 5:
1. Download updates but let me choose whether to install them
2. Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them
3. Download updates but let me choose whether to install them
4. Install updates automatically / Never Check For Updates
5. Enable the option box to choose manually

If this doesn't help, you can try this method, but make sure you backup the registry files as you are doing this step on your own and I am not responsible for the possible issue -
Backup registry files in Windows 7
Click ?Start? button.
Select ?Run?.
Type ?regedit? without quotes in the Run window and hit Enter.

Navigate to this location: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU
In the right-pane, delete these two values ?AUOptions? and ?NoAutoUpdate?.

Then navigate to this location: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\WindowsUpdate
In the right-pane, delete the value ?DisableWindowsUpdateAccess?.
Restart the computer and then try to change the Auto Update Settings.

I've got a code that allows me to upgrade to Ultimate, just wondering I am current running Home premium 64-bit, if I upgrade will it delete any of my files or restore to factory settings or do a master reboot ? or will it upgrade and be the same as before just running Ultimate instead ?
And Is ultimate worth upgrading to ? does it make my computer better ?

A:OEM Windows 7 Ultimate Activation Question

You can install as many times as you need, but the license is tied to the motherboard.

I'm not going to judge for replacing your motherboard and reactivating, because you are not abusing the spirit of the law.

Just note that that is technically breaking the rules.

A:Upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate Question

If it's not an OEM version, then you can use it on another system. Be aware that you can only use the OS on one system at a time.

Also, I recommend a 'clean' install.

I have Vista Ultimate 64 bit. Can I install Windows 7 Pro 64 bit on the next partition? Does it have to be 7 Ultimate also to match Vista Ultimate? This will be multiboot. Thank you!

A:Question about multiboot Vista Ultimate and windows 7 Pro

Assuming that you check and there are drivers available for your hardware that are Windows 7 compatible, then you can install Windows 7 Pro and if you choose the Custom install options, you should be able to choose to install it to a second partition and get the option of a dual boot set up.Remember that each operating system will consider its own partition to be C drive when it is active and assign a different letter to the other partition.Make sure that you write down the sizes of each partition so you can go by the partition size and not confuse which is which and overwrite important data and your original partition. The first partition might be called Partition 0 and the second Partition 1 and if there are physically more than one actual disk then it can get even more confusing so unplug any additional hard drives that might contain data to limit that variable. You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

Hi,

I've reinstalled Windows-- wiped the drive, started from scratch. Things went swimmingly until I got to the 149 important updates! I had automagic updating turned on, but it hung up for 24 hours, and I got an unknown error . I went in and cleared the attempted update using this temp.bat:
net stop wuauserv
net stop Cryptsvc
ren %windir%\SoftwareDistribution sdold.old
ren %windir%\system32\catroot2 crt2old.old
net start wuauserv
net start Cryptsvc

which worked.

In order to not get stuck in an endless cycle of not updating, I decided to update manually (it's my day off. ) Is there a specific order in which I should update? I thought they'd be on this list chronologically, but that would make sense.

Thank you,

Luminosity

Hi. My name is Paul Benjamin. I was wondering...I am running Windows Vista Ultimate on my Sony Vaio VGN-AR550U laptop, and was wondering what is the best anti-virus/security software for my operating system. Right now I am running AVG Free version, but I am with Cox Communications so I have a free McAfee Security Suite that is offered via Cox. I have five other people that are running wireless laptops on my home network. I have three computers that are desktops that are directly connected. I am just worried about viruses and safety. Some of the people on my network are very computer illiterate so they don't really understand computer security. In your opinion, what would be best for my computer to protect me? Thank you so much for your time. Any information would be greatly appreciated. :-)

The 1024 is the true memory size,

That is reporting you can only have 2GB installed.
Which sounds off for a newer motherboard.

My husband, myself and also our son have a computer with windows 7 on it. We live in the country and we pay for out internet as per how much we use. Each time we want to format our computers we find ourselves having to do all the updates and using so much of our time for these.

We were wondering if anyone knows of how you get all the updates from the time that windows 7 started till present and then put them on a disk for yourself so at least you have everything to this date to this point instead of having to download them to each computer. Is there a place that will let you do this that anyone knows of?

Hi all,

I keep reading that you shouldn't let Windows automatically install updates on your PC, which I can see the reasoning behind this but I'm not sure the best way to put this into practice.
For instance, the other day an update installed and for whatever reason left me with a PC that wouldn't start outside of safe mode and a code 31 error but a system restore has fixed that for now.

But I guess my main question is if I choose to let windows notify me and let me pick what updates to install how do I know what to install and what not too?

Sorry it might seem like a noobish question but I don't know is all.

Cheers

Paz

A:Windows updates question?

Basically I advice all my friends and also family to let Windows automatically install any offered update. I never had an error you descriped in your post and it all went well always. Not-up-to-date computers are usually a target for malware and the updates usually fix security issues.

Is there a way to somehow load the windows updates to a disk and then install them on a different computer? The reason I ask is that the computer I need them on, does only have dial-up and that would take forever to get them all. So, I was hoping to load them via my HI speed connection onto a disk and install them from there. Is that doable? If so, would you please tell me how I need to proceed? Thanks. It is for Win XP home (and yes, a genuine copy).

HI,

My Dell auto downloaded 88 updates yesterday AM when i shut down my pc. On reboot, it started configuring the updates but stalled at 16%, i left it for about 8 hrs and it never moved from the 16%. I forced shut down the PC, but again on restart, it started the Configuring updates and says, "Do not turn off your computer". Its now been at 15% for over 14 hrs? I'm not sure to shut down again as it might start this process again on restart or let it go for another 24 hrs? Is this normal or is there an issue with the configuring of the updates.

A:Question about instaling some windows updates or not. (KB codes)

Kb2574819 is reasonably important - it's a security enhancement
KB2592687 isn't really important unless you use Remote Desktop at all
Kb2973337 is important - it's a security enhancement
Kb2985461 is a bugfix - but not one you're likely to need.
Kb2998527 is a Time Zone Update - and will probably have been superseded by a more recent one anyhow
Kb3000869 is important - it's s security bugfix.
Kb3001554 is optional and possibly unnecessary unless you're playing DVDs a lot.

You should check with your laptop's manufacturer about the Driver updates - they may have more recent ones, or they may use tweaked ones.

I stopped downloading and installing Windows Updates out of fear after Microsoft started forcing Windows 10 on everyone. I DO NOT want to update to Windows 10. It's been 8+ months since I installed any updates.

Can I still do certain updates as long as I'm careful to know what it does, or does installing any update cause Windows 10 problems?

Has Microsoft allowed any way to avoid the upgrade and offers?

I'm seeing high memory use (1-2 gigs extra) on startup for 15-20 minutes. I think wuauserv is the culprit after looking at things in Process Explorer. It appears KB3050265 solves the problem but I'm afraid it will force me into Windows 10. That update also appears to allow a way to stop the Windows 10 problem but I'm not positive.

Please help! I have had problems installing several updates for Vista x64 Ultimate. I installed kb937287, kb943302, kb943899, kb964041 updates successfully, but when I restart they still appear in Windows Update list. I tried installing .Net 3.5 sp1 update kb951847, but it fails with error code 57.

Also, when Vista loads it gets a blue screen with either 0x0000007E or 0x000000A error codes. It takes several attempts to get Vista loaded. I tried a bunch of fixes, but none of them worked. I tried loading the System Readiness Tool, but I can not locate the file to run it. I tried loading several updates realted to those errors, but I get a mesage saying the they don't apply to my system.

Hi there, I just did a brand new installation of a Win7 Ultimate 7 Lite on my Netbook which full details have been specificated at the time of registration.
Since then the Windows Updates is continuosly searching updates for my OS without giving me any results at all.

What is supposed I should do in order to "unblock" the Windows Updates software?
I dont know if the coder who made the lite version has somehow disabled the Windows Updates functionality.
Waiting for any help I remain.

A:the ultimate question lol

Hi moony,Find power options in the control panel area. Click the advanced tab at the top of the window that opens and you should see an area called Power buttons. You can use that to set the power button to "do nothing" when pressed. (It's in the drop down box)The only problem I can foresee with that is the need to power off. If a program hangs, you may have to cut the computer off with your power strip. Some computers will allowed a "forced off" after holding the power button for over 5 seconds. The CD???? I don't have an answer for that. SorryHope this helps some,Rigel

After using the site search engine and reading the results, I think I've come to a conclusion but I'm still not too sure. I would like some clarification though.

If I was to purchase W7 Ulitmate Upgrade, and perform a clean install over top of XP Pro totally erasing the HD to start clean, I would be ok. Right?

Now, if I was to purchase W7 Ultimate Upgrade System Builders OEM, and do the same, I'd be ok, as long as I don't change any major hardware. Correct?

Thanks,

I assume that the Ultimate is better than the Premium that I have installed on another PC?

I want to install it on a home PC with a full installation.

I was also wondering if there is any advantage or limitations if I purchased a full OEM vs a full retail version?

I used to have XP OEM version on a PC and it had a limit of five reloads before you had to contact Microsoft to ask for another activation beyond that.

Thank you for any inputs about this.

If you are running 4GB RAM or more then you want to get X64, if not go with X86. But that is really up to you. If you plan on upgrading to 4GB RAM, then go with X64.

I do not think there is any difference between the retail and OEM versions. The only real difference I know of is that the OEM must come with some sort of hardware and the retail version just comes with a CD and manual.

First off, I just want to say this site is awesome!

Now a couple of questions...

I am building my own system, I just wanted to know if I could save some cash by getting an upgrade disk and then do the clean install trick instead of buying the full version? Also, does 64bit software come with Vista Ultimate Upgrade Disk?

A:Vista Ultimate 64bit Question

Hello Baboon, and welcome to Vista Forums.

I suppose you could go the upgrade route to save some money since you have Vista Home Premium if you do not mind installing the upgrade twice everytime you want to do a clean install with it.

A full retail Vista Ultimate package will have both the 32-bit and 64-bit Vista Ultimate DVD included with it. However, you can only have one or the other installed at the same time using the same product key number that came with it. You would only have to install once for a clean install though.

If you would like to go 64-bit, double check to make sure that all of your devices have 64-bit drivers available for them, and that you software will also support 64-bit first though. Most software will, but some security and utility type programs may not. This Microsoft link can be help to check compatibility.

I have a question. I just bought a computer with Vista Basic (32-bit) and I want to upgrade it to Ultimate (32-bit). If I buy a Vista Ultimate CD and install it, will it wipe my HD clean? Is there any way to avoid that?

A:Upgrade Question: Basic ---> Ultimate

As long as you don't buy the OEM version your fine, the upgrade and full retail version will perform an upgrade, but the OEM will not.

Hi all,

I installed an oem version of Vista Ultimate and didn't install with the serial key till later

I input the keys through the option in My Computer, and inserted a set of serial that I acquired, I don't know the history of the key or if it have been activated/used. However, the activation went through and everything seems fine.

My question is, will I get checked within a month or so? Will I run into problems running the system? If so should I disable windows update?
-My Acer came with Vista Home OEM, however it didn't come with recovery disk, so this is my first option to try. Thanks

A:Vista Ultimate Activation question

Sorry Vince, but this looks like an illegally obtained key and we cannot support this. Do not repost about this subject.

If it's legal, you will not have a problem. If not, you bet you will have activation issues later.

I'm just wondering how you knew I was lovely before I even replied!

If you'd like us to determine which is the correct GUID for you, run msinfo32 (Start>type msinfo32) and save it as a .NFO file (File>Save). Then, add it to a .zip file and attach it to your next post.

I have a friend that was telling me about this problem he was having getting Window 7 Ultimate to see networks with a wireless connection ... now it works fine with a wire hook up, but not with wireless hook up. It sees the network adapter, but claims it doesn't see any networks ... when my friend uses his laptop and the other computer at the house running windows vista those computers sees it just fine ... my friend used the driver the manufacture provided ... checked for updates and made sure it had the driver needed ... he even did some tweaking with the router a d-link n-300 ... no matter what he did it just didn't see any networks when ask to look for some. Is it some kind of glitch in Window 7 Ultimate that they haven't straighten out yet? Has anyone else had this problem?

Recently I bought and installed Windows Ultimate -bit The main selling point to me was that it had support for different languages one of which was Japanese I was under the impression that this meant I could have my locale set to English but also run software in Japanese on the fly without the text being a Question Ultimate About Languages and Non-Western garbled mess like I used to see running them in Vista Home while in the English locale unless I use this AppLocale program but I could change my locale to Japanese and it Question About Ultimate and Non-Western Languages would work on restart Apparently I was wrong While using some programs like Paint Tool Sai and its installer for that matter it has that Question About Ultimate and Non-Western Languages mess rather than Japanese kana and kanji It does work if I change my local to Japanese but I don't want to have to restart my computer every time I want to use these programs So that being said is there some setting that needs to be enabled or did I just waste money on a feature that I misunderstood Thank you all in advanced for the help

A:Question About Ultimate and Non-Western Languages

You misunderstood, the language packs are for total conversion to another language.

A:Windows 7 updates same for updates every time it checks for updates

See if you can System Restore to before Net Framework 4 was installed and then Hide it when it is again offered in Updates.

But be aware that some programs will need it and may not prompt you of this leaving you to guess why they are not installing or performing correctly. For this reason I always install it.

So you might want to reinstall it using its standalone installer since it may not have uninstalled correctly anyway.

I am building a system and put windows 7 ultimate retail on it, but have not activated it yet. The computer is running perfect and i have already installed all drivers, software, etc...

Can i somehow use the Ultimate OEM instead of retail without a clean install?

Probably not needed to know but both are x64.

A:Windows 7 Ultimate retail to Ultimate OEM

You have an OEM ( system builder ) product key as well as a Retail product key?

Should be fine to just enter the system builder key.

Hi so I really like the vista sleep mode, but I have a question. Would using sleep mode often cause a slow down? I don't want my computer to be noticeably slower. I have vista ult. 3 gig ram, 9800 GTX, Intel e6400.
also how can I make a shortcut for sleep...like win key+s for example.

A:Vista ultimate sleep mode question

Hello Isikh, and welcome to Vista Forums.

It should not affect the performance of your computer except that it will be faster to startup when you want to use it instead of from a complete startup.

This tutorial will help show you how to create a sleep shortcut.

I have heard lots of bad things about vista but not one good thing. Maybe this is because of who i have asked, but i need to find out!!!

A:Solved: The ultimate question.....Is vista worth getting????

Vista is worth getting but not at the moment. Just wait a couple of months for all the manufactures to get the vista drivers updated and then there will be no problems. when ever a operating system first comes out, not all the correct drivers are launched hence problems people have, so i allways wait a couple of months beofre purchasing a new OS.

A:Dual boot Vista Ultimate x32 and x64 HDD Question!

Hello Ruth, and welcome to Seven Forums.

I would recommend to install Vista X32 first, then Vista X64 so that the Vista X64 will be the default OS that starts. During installation, you can select which drive you want the OS to install to.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Well like XP i noticed it said 32bit, so is there going to be a 64bit, if so what is the difference and does it do anything more?

A:plan on getting Vista Ultimate but have quick question

there is a 64bit vista. only thing is that its even less compatible than 64bit xp is. unless the software is written for 64bit vista, you may be worse off then running with 32bit vista. what is your system specs, and what do you plan on doing with this computer?
