Hi - I have just had a new hard drive put in, and busily customising everything.
I notice that the Microsoft Office Tools are not showing the correct icons - e.g. W for Word etc. they are just a white square with blue top, which could suggest they wouldn't open, but they do. Several other applications are like that namely Adobe, Windows Media, Microsoft Power Point.
Is something missing - have I deleted something - or turned something off ??
Regards
Judy
I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.
I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)
I have just built a new computer using Windows Pro bit however I've noticed when I open Windows explorer out of times it will continuously search for drives when opening up explorer and not show any drives that are installed I've tried reformatting using different hard drives but the problem persists no matter what I do I've reinstalled Windows with only a single drive plugged in tried different SATA ports but this folders/file icons/thumbnails showing Drives not showing, not problem keeps Drives not showing, folders/file icons/thumbnails not showing coming back The only thing I can think of is that the Windows install disk is corrupted and not installing properly I've also noticed that once it starts searching like this the icons wont display in any folder although the file names will Likewise when trying to sort files Drives not showing, folders/file icons/thumbnails not showing by date type etc they will not sort When this happens I can easily type in Drives not showing, folders/file icons/thumbnails not showing C to get to the drive without problem to access the drive but above problems with icons not showing sorting etc still is a problem Has anyone had this problem Know of a way to fix this I'm not looking forward to having to reformat again as I don't have the time to sit through and reinstall everything again after

Hello So I just signed up here because I'm desperate and don't know what to do So basically I thought the windows default folder icons were pretty bland and ugly so I decided to change them I read that you could change your default icons by going into to registry and I did just that Long story short it didn't the folders to + showing icons icons wrong Unable folder change work so i deleted the registry folder Unable to change folder icons + folders showing the wrong icons that I had just created like they said you could I Unable to change folder icons + folders showing the wrong icons was very careful or so I think to not touch anything else But now I'm worried I might have messed up somewhere because now I can't change icons for Unable to change folder icons + folders showing the wrong icons some of the folders I use Not sure if this was a problem before that I didn't notice or if it's due to me messing around with things I don't understand As things are now I can change icons for folders that I created but the folders that came with the system like documents music movies downloads etc I'm currently unable to change The thing is I was able to change the folder icons just a while ago so I changed them all by right clicking on the folder choosing properties and then changing the icon and that worked fine Then I decided to just use the default icons anyway but I was only able to switch back some of them and some of those now had the wrong folder icon My quot downloads quot folder is just a blank white space for example and I'm unable to change it To show an example I'm sorry the text is in swedish I hope you can somewhat understand Properties for an ordinary folder Properties for my music folder Just a blank space where the quot switch icon quot should be I have tried to reboot my computer I have tried top reset my icon cache nothing seems to work Does anyone know what I should do I'm pretty much just ready to reset my whole system but I'd prefer if I didn't have to Any help is appreciated
Hi, whenever you are about to make changes to your registry, back up beforehand. So you now know that and I'll show you an excellent way to rescue yourself in future.
First, do you have System Restore turned on (it's off by default in '10), and do you have any useful restore points?
Second, have you made a system image using Windows Backup and Restore or do you use disk imaging?
Either of those could let you restore your PC to a point before you made these changes- hopefully System Restore would protect enough to reverse your changes.
Please advise.
If you can't do that, and you are convinced there is a problem, then you may have two options, assuming you've not done some damage to the registry.
1. If you create a new user account for test purposes, do your folders look normal?
2. If not, I suggest you do an in-place upgrade repair install.
I will provide the instructions if necessary when you have replied.
Please post back and advise on these points.
I can also tell you how to achieve this quite easily and relatively safely:
Now here's the backup method we strongly recommend:
Creating disk images lets you restore Windows and all your disks and partitions to a previous working state, quickly and probably without technical help.
You can recover from:
- a failed disk drive (restore to a new one)
- ransomware (which encrypts your disk)
- user error
- unrecoverable problems from failed updates to problem programs
- unbootable PC (hardware faults aside)
Images also act as a full backup- you can extract files too.
You can even use images to help you move more easily and quickly to a new PC.
Imaging can even help you sleep at night knowing you have a second chance.
Many here recommend Macrium Reflect (free) as a good robust solution and more reliable than some others. It?s
- more feature rich
- more flexible
- more reliable
than Windows Backup and Restore system images.
It's well supported with videos, help and a responsive forum.
I've seen multiple posts here and other forums and I have tried all of the steps provided in those posts but it is not resolving my issue I have the exact same Extra Multiple Large smallest in showing using icons Icons when size issue as the user in THIS THREAD I have tried the icon database rebuild both manually and using the bat file HERE I have tried ie uinit exe - ClearIconCache from command prompt I have tried Disk Cleanup and checked the box to delete icon cache and I have tried different cache size amounts using the steps HERE I've tried these all from normal boot and safe mode I don't know what else to do The icons that have the problem keep changing every time I restart the PC I can change them to another icon rename the icon the shortcut had previously been using and reapply that icon and it shows normal at that time but as soon as I restart the PC icons change to the smaller size on random shortcuts again What other steps are there Thanks in advance
Welcome to the Seven Forums.
Have you tried the batch file in this tutorial:
Folder View Settings - Reset All to Default
It resets the area of the registry that stores some desktop icon info.
warning: read the note about desktoprestore.
You might also want to try combining the batch file for icon cache rebuild with this one... only kill/restart explorer once at the end.
Does this problem happen if you create (& log onto) a new (test) user account?
Why is it that sometimes the folders icons show samples of their contents and sometimes not?
Check the two images: the first shows Desktop in Windows Explorer; the second shows the desktop itself.
Any idea on how to make Windows always show the folders contents samples?
TIA.
Hello Paul,
You might see if clearing and resetting the thumbnail cache may be able to help.
Hi everyone,
I'm having another complete nightmare problem on my brand new Dell XPS running Win x64 Ultimate.
When I try to customise what behaviour the various icons exhibit on the taskbar (and I'm taken to CONTROL PANEL- ALL CONTROL PANEL ITEMS-NOTIFICATION AREA ICONS), some of the icons are correct and truly represent the proramme which they are aligned with, but some are incorrect and some are blank and some are duplicates of icons for other programmes that are shown elsewhere.
I've tried everything I can think of, but nothing works.
Can anyone help, please?
Many thanks,

As you can see from the attached image several of my icons are not showing up and I don't know why it just happened all of a sudden. Ive tried restarting and running a disk cleanup and nothing works. Any help would be appreciated.
I had this problem for my desktop since I want to use icons I am familiar with for special shortcuts. My icons are stored in dll libraries that I had to convert to 32bit. I found by accident that when changing icons if you click the "Restore Default" button after selecting your icon, the icon shows on the desktop. Don't know why. haven't had problems with any others yet.
http://www.sevenforums.com/customization/34500-some-icons-not-showing.htmlI'm having problems viewing the icons on my computer.
What do i mean you say...
We'll i first noticed it in my Favorites in Internet Explorer.(not the drop down Favorites)
I have a bunch of folders there and the little folder icon doesn't show up and neither does the IE icons next to website names.
Other places i have this problem is when i try to create a shortcut to my desktop for an application. None of the items are indicated with a icon next to them.
I hope i made sense. If i didn't reply. i wrote this ina hurry.. have to goto work...
I'm running Vista on a new Vaio laptop.
On XP I could right-click a webpage and create a shortcut on the desktop. It would show that site's icon (like the orange 'Z' for jigzone) on the desktop.
For Vista the "unrecognized" icon shows. The title of the webpage shows correctly, and when I ask for a description of the link on the desktop the proper icon (the orange 'Z' for jigzone) shows.
Since I can create the shortcut with the proper icon on my HP running Vista it must be something different on my laptop but I can't find what it is.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,

Hi I experienced a weird problem while working on my daughter s Windows laptop last night The little area in the bottom right-hand of the screen forget what it s called normally shows little icons of the main programs that are loaded Keep Icons Showing? How to and running in the background This How to Keep Icons Showing? had been set to always show the icons for our antivirus and antispyware programs even if they did not have active notifications to display Well those icons were showing just fine beforehand but then started acting up How to Keep Icons Showing? after I d uninstalled the free versions of Adaware and Spybot plus then installed the free version of SpywareBlaster and a paid copy of the antispyware add-on extensions for McAfee Enterprise VirusScan How to Keep Icons Showing? i I kept trying to change the icon preferences for the McAfee icon to always show up no matter what but every time I rebotted the computer it would go back to being a hidden icon Changing the preferences to having ALL icons show up all the time does work but that is a bit of an overkill Does anyone have a suggestion as to how I could fix this minor icon display problem Thanks
it might be a setting in the program that overrides the windows command to always show, i would check the settings in that one program that you want to show.

Hey I noticed the last weeks that some icons aren't appearing next to my clock at the bottom right like Windows live messenger and Steam etc, which I only can go now by going back through the start panel. I know how to arrange these icons however right click start and doing that doesn't change it.

I'm not sure why it's happening and I was hoping someone would have a solution for this. It happens anywhere I place the program(i.e. desktop, taskbar, start menu). The one that aren't showed up I've highlighted with red over on the left side of the screen.
Did you check the paths and everything?

Hello genhartg,
This may be an association issue. If you like, download and merge the .reg files for the listed EXE and lnk (LNK) options in the tutorial below. They will restore the default associations for these file types, and hopefully fix this for you.

Hope this helps,

Hello and welcome to TSF
Please try this:
Download TweakUI (click on the colored link), the download is on the right side of the page. Save it to your desktop.
When the download is finished, double click on it, this should install it. When installed, Click Start, All Programs, Powertoys for Windows XP, click Tweak UI.
When Tweak UI is loaded click on Repair then on Rebuild Icons and click Repair, then Apply and Ok.
So yes.. let me explain my problem here.
Yesterday,I created a guest account and logged off to another, after that,my screen
went black and does not respond to whatever I pressed. Even after restarting my
computer,the problem persists.
Now,I had disabled the guest account through safe mode.
But in normal mode, icons, taskbars were gone, but mouse cursors and background
remains. I was wondering if this might have something related to graphic or something.
Also,I am not able to go to task manager,it goes black screen after I did crt + alt + del.
I am using windows vista x64bit

Hi, welcome to SevenForums.
Try this: Thumbnail Cache - Clear and Reset
After changing my keyboard settings, something happened with my taskbar so that it only shows two pinned icons, and I have to use these up and down arrow keys to scroll through the rest. This is incredibly annoying, as I can't figure out how to make it show all the icons again. My ThinkCentre button is hogging up the whole task bar, and any right clicks in the giant empty spaces right next to it will bring up options for the ThinkCentre.
See image: http://img27.imageshack.us/img27/1720/problemka.png
Help is appreciated!
Right click the left-very down corner (where it is the taskbar again under the start button) and uncheck 'Lock taskbar'.
Now u should be able to reduce the size of that toolbar.
If you can't right click again > toolbars then uncheck the specific toolbars.
If you go to googlemaps, I get no map images only 'x' in red (not showing.
Some navigation buttons work and some don't.
I am running IE7 on my new vista computer.
I have firefox also and works perfectly.

From http://www.windowsnetworking.com/kba...IconCache.html
Quote:
There is a hidden icon cache file in your windows directory, ShellIconCache, which contains a copy of all the default desktop icons. It sometimes gets corrupted. If it does, your icons will go all black or they may display the wrong icons. If this happens, delete it and reboot. NT (& Win9x) will repopulate the cache with the default icons. To delete the ShellIconCache:
* at a command prompt, change to the %SystemRoot% folder
* remove the hidden attribute from the file:
type attrib -h shelliconcache and press ENTER.
* delete the file:
type del shelliconcache and press ENTER.
* logoff and backon and the default icons should be restored.

Hello Yihwan,
It looks like you need to unlock your taskbar, drag the dotted lines separator just to the left of the blue circle icon (far right one) over to the left to decompress the other icons until the arrows to the right of the Chrome icon go away. After you get the icons dragged into the position you want, you can lock the taskbar again.
Hope this helps,

I'm having problems changing the Metro tile icons for the "old school" apps.
When I change the icon, it is blank... showing only the default white square icon. Do the icons for Win 8 have to be in a certain format? If so, can anyone give me the specifics?
Thanks!
*edit* It would be great if they let you use .png's... but no such luck.
I have the same problem I've tried different sizes, with or without transparency with no luck. Strangely the icons that I have made previously in window 7 work when applied to a shortcut in windows 8 very strange.

What could be the issue? I can hover my mouse over where applications might be at, and I can still see the program, but with arrows in it's place. Hopefully you can look through my screenshot and see what I mean.

Hi,
I recently got a new laptop with Vista Home Basic. Loved XP for years but I guess you have to upgrade at some point!
The problem is this: I have a lot of photographs and they all show a generic icon and not a icon of the photo iteslf in the folders. Even on large icon view I just get a little blue icon of a landscape, regardless of what the photo is.
Please help.
Many thanks,

I seem to have lost the icons for my mp3 and wav files (who knows if there are more). I have them associated with windows media player. When I change the file association, the icon changes to the correct icon, but when I change it back to WMP, it goes away.
BTW, my system did not have iconcache.db in the appdata\local folder (viewing hidden files, system files), so I don't know what is up. Again, it's only for audio files associated with WMP. If I change the file association to another program, the icons for mp3/wav files appear. Change it back, they're gone.
Any ideas? Thanks.
WMP only has codecs for windows media files (wmv,wma,etc.). MP3 is a mpeg codec and as such you will need to download and install a codecs package like K-lite codecs: http://www.codecguide.com/download_kl.htm.

Hi, ive attached a picture of my problem.
I have a few theme programs installed such as vista transfromation pack and windowsblinds which could have messed with the icon cache which could have caused this problem. Basically all the default icons have been replcaed by vista looking ones and this is the only bug, the my computer, my documents and my network places icons wont show up on the side when i choose "save file as" or something
i have also removed my computer my documents and my network places from my desktop with tweakUI
any ideas for a wrokaround
thanks
Using more than one GUI changing program is bad, many times they will conflict, and something like this is the result. My advice, based on personal experiance is too unload WindowBlinds, and do a complete uninstall. Then uninstall the transformation pack as well, once you get your GUI back to a default setting, install only one of this type of programs.

Have several icons on it, which is fine.
But it won't accept any more new ones if I try to drag some onto it.
I right clicked on the bar and pulled up the Taskbar Tab under properties.
I have the Lock The Taskbar box un-checked, and have also selected
Never Combine next to the Taskbar Buttons: line.
Seems like it's still trying to pin the icons to others, and Not show them visually as completely separate icons in the bar.
What might I be doing wrong ?
BTW: also, any way of having the icon names Permanently displayed next to the icon on top or below the particular icon ?
Thanks,
Bob
Thanks,
Bob
Have you tried changing the size of the Taskbar Icons I have a pile of them in there and very little on the desktop now.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/108256/taskbaricons-not-showing-please-help/My desktop & bar icons are not showing up after i messed up with regedit.exe and deleted some keys instead of letting Adwcleaner clean them up because i didn't want to restart my computer . I ran scans with anti malware tools and I left them to remove what they found. I ran sfc /SCANNOW too and it doesn't works . I tried even restarting in safe mode and that doesn't works too. Can you please tell me how to fix it up?
Have you tried system restore?
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/572233/desktop-icons-bar-not-showing-up/I'm sorry for posting so many questions here. But my Windows XP operating sytem isn't displaying icons when I download new items. Instead I have to right click > properties > change icon > OK. Instead of automatically installing the icon, it shows this:
on the desktop. It displayed a similar image for virtually everything in the start menu too. This meant I had to install every single icon in the start bar menu manually! What is causing this? How can I fix it so it automatically displays icons for newly installed items?

Hi, I have a workstation running X64 and for some or other reason the icons are not showing the programs that it is associated with, like Adobe Reader for pdf, Dreamweaver for asp, AutoCad for dwg etc.
It is just showing generic icons although, when you click to open the file it uses the correct program to open it with.
Any ideas why?
I've got the same problem myself, it started today.
Some are showing as normal though and the rest of the real icons are covered over by a generic icon.
It's possible to see the edges of the real icons.
This is really really really bugging me, if you click on start then you click of your name or whatever to access your photos and videos and such, well you open that up, and you can see the little scroll down thing on the right, well most of the icons are not being shown. The are just displaying a black box where the icons are "supposed" to be. This only happens in my account on the computer, not the administaters. What is going on? Does anyone else have this problem? And how can I fix this?
The most obvious thing that could cause this (although there are many other reasons) is that your user account has become corrupted. Try creating a new account and seeing if it has the same behavior. If not, switch your stuff over to the new account and delete the old one.

This problem started farther back than I can remember, I just booted this PC up one morning and all of my icons were default white pages.

http://www.sevenforums.com/general-discussion/335282-any-all-applications-icons-not-showing-up.htmlThe logon screen on my computer is not showing the icons for switch user, power, ease access, etc. The only thing I've done recently is uninstalled some fonts. Thinking this may have caused the problem, I reinstalled them but I'm still having this problem. Any suggestions.
Hello Nick, and welcome to Eight Forums.
Running a sfc /scannow command may be able to help.
I had Windows Vista since last year and everything was fine. Yesterday, my icons/thumbnails on the internet disappeared and show a box with symbols. I can tell what the box says when I scroll over but how do I get the icons back. I restored the firewall to its default setting and the icons came back but now they're gone again. Please help.

Hi All,
My system has been behaving erratically these past few days. I have just installed critical updates for windows vista basic 32bit and at restart, some of my quick launch bars icons were showing blanks. I have tried several system restores without much joy there. Trojan and virus scans have also drawn a blank. Can someone help, before I resort to a total system reinstall?
Right click on the taskbar , click on Toolbars and click on New Toolbar:
Now type: %appdata%\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch and press Enter.
Your quick launch should come up.
The Vista glass icons are showing ok in the main window but a few of them aren't in the navigation pane.
http://www.vistax64.com/general-discussion/233616-navigation-icons-not-showing-properly.htmlHello
I have a strange problem and sadly none of the GREAT guides about the star menu on this forum helped.
The Problem is:
My start menu "All Programs" only shows the Icons/Folders from:
%systemdrive%\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu
But it does not show any Icons from my user:
%UserProfile%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu
I've got no clue how to fix that. Can someone help me?
Thank you
Hello Traspler, and welcome to Vista Forums.

Hello everyone,
I've been searching for a while now but haven't been able to solve this problem: some icons or I don't know how to call them, display as squares; just like when a character can't be read, a square is displayed instead. I'm thinking it's something with my languages properties? or something related. Attached is a picture of what I'm talking about:
I've had this problem for a while now and it always bugged me; I also restored once to no avail.
Please help!
Here's the solution and credit goes to MrShowdown:

So uh, as you can see from the screenshot of my desktop and taskbar (blacked out 2 shortcuts do to them being revealing), some of my desktop icons do not show like they normally would apparently. The ones with the white paper with a window on it are the ones i'm talking about. The ones on the taskbar are Skype (left) and MSN (right).
Uh, anyway to fix this??
Hello Cyanide,
Do the shortcuts still work?
You might see if rebuilding the icon cache may help.
If not, then you might see if creating new shortcuts for them directly from the program's .exe file may display properly.
Hope this helps.
Hm........ So I just changed out the case for my computer for better cooling today and did a test boot and saw that EVGA Precision X, Internet, and a few others like Steam are not showing up. It says they are there, but no icons or "tool tips" show up when rolling over. Here is a screen-shot of it:
Could they be hidden behind the little arrow?
http://www.sevenforums.com/general-discussion/318231-system-tray-icons-not-showing.htmlSometimes some icos (as eg. Avast) do not show in the system tray at computer startup.
Restarting the system will sometimes fix the problem. Anyway, it is an annoying isuue.
How can I solve it?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Are the programs actually starting when they're not showing up in the system tray?
http://www.sevenforums.com/general-discussion/307782-icons-not-showing-system-tray.htmlHello!
Norton 360 icon runs double in my taskbar. It's the only program that does it. But also, my emails have been doubling in two of my web accounts. I have noticed it on my phone, and web. I've sought help, but no one seems to fix it. Really tired of the seeing double stuff. Could I have malware stuck somewhere? Is Conduit a culprit? My PC also likes to connect to an old network ID that has been deleted from my profiles. I had renamed the ID an my PC wants to keep that name. It's like it's mad at me or something. I have to manually reconnect to the new ID name. My PC is running Win7, and it's about 5 yrs old. My fan runs hot a lot though, and the computer shuts down sometimes. I really need help here. Hate having multiple problems. Had these issue for a few months now.
It can take 5 days, sometimes more to receive help. All the malware team are volunteers and working through the 100's of requests they get a day...

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/129867/malware-icons-taskbar-not-showing/Hi first of all I want to say hello to all at bleepingcomputer since this is my first post Now to the reason of it I need some help A few days ago I installed some application that caused my desktop to show no icons I removed the app immediately rebooted and all icons on the Desktop except for folders were replaced by the quot unknown file type quot icon I ve tried a few things and managed to get back some icons through the quot change icon quot button in Properties but some icons I could Properly. Showing Up Desktop Not Icons not change or just won t The icons that still won t work are Recycle Bin Internet Desktop Icons Not Showing Up Properly. Explorer Default Web Browser I m Desktop Icons Not Showing Up Properly. using Firefox and Sony Ericsson File Manager These are the things I ve done so far - Did a System Restore to two different previous points - Changed icons through Properties in the respective programs - Downloaded registry restorations from http www kellys-korner-xp com xp tweaks htm- Ran antivirus avast ad-aware and SpyBot Nothing was found None of these have worked for me The icon files are still obviously in the computer since they appear all right in my mom s and sister s accounts And I was gonna live with it but when I turned on the PC today a blue screen with the windows logo that said quot please wait quot appeared before the welcome screen so I m starting to worry Do any of you know what the hell s going on with my pc
If you can get to 'safe mode' I would scan with all the anti-spyware tools, like Ewido, A-squared, Spybot s & d, etc. If that doesn't work try and see if any of the windows updates have upset your syssem. I lost my search facility with a windows update.
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/45351/desktop-icons-not-showing-up-properly/Hi guys, i've been havin a problem with my flash drive.
All my corel draw docs on the drive don't appear as their respective software icons when in the icons view. Also the icons that do appear correctly change when i try to rename it.
Then when i double click to open, it brings up the window asking me to select the program to open with. How do I sort this out.
Are you sure you are not changing the extension of your Corel Draw files when you try to rename them. I mean there is an option in Windows explorer that shows the extension (filename.EXE). If this option is enabled by you, then you may have accidentally deleted the extension, too.
Check your files and see if they have an extension ( for example *.MP3, *.DOC etc...). If so click on the Folder Options under the Tools menu in My Computer. Then chose the "view" tab and check the box "Hide extensions for known file types".
This will hide all your extension and let you rename your files safely.
Hope this solves your problem.
I am wondering why when I press my computer and look at my devices none of them have icons. So I put my Win XP SP2 CD in and it didn't pull up this little icon that I am used to seeing so I am wondering why they aren't coming up because I made my flash drive have an icon and it didn't pull it up so I put it into another PC and it had the utorrent icon so some setting on my PC is messed up
Where is this icon, on the desktop or in the System Tray?
If they are in the System Tray try this. Right click on an open space of the System Tray and select Properties and clear the check mark in Hide inactive icons.
Let us know if this solves this. If not there are a couple of other things to try.
I have Windows Vista Home Premium installed on my HP Pavillion Laptop and now when I go into the Pictures folder the icons for the folders and pictures don't show up as thumbnails anymore. They just show as blank with the file name below the empty space. It appears that sometimes some thumbnail icons for the pictures load but more often than not they are all blank.
I recently installed some windows updates but have since removed them with no result. I also tried searching Google and wasn't able to find a solution.\
Any ideas?
Thanks
Is this happening in every folder with photos in it? Or just some? Or certain directories? Is it happening to every single photo in each folder or just some of the photos in each folder?
<thinking out loud here>It could be some folder options setting for just some of the folders or a view setting...
When I go to save a file, for example, to my desktop, the icons do not show up in the dialog box for existing items in the location. It happens sometimes too when uploading files. How do I fix this?
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/490780/file-viewer-icons-not-showing-up/In my application we are using webFonts, when we launch the application for the first time all the WebFonts/Icons are showing properly. When the pop blocker error dialog comes up and user allows the pop-ups for the site, the page is reloading and the webFonts/Icons

Can some one help me out why it is happening and how to debug.
Thanks,
Durga
Dunno what happened. One day they were fine and the next they were gone. I've attached a photo so you can see what's happening. My VLC player and Adobe Photoshop icon also disappeared. I've used the rebuild icon cache and it fixed the VLC and Photoshop icon but not the Microsoft office ones. Any ideas?

You are running in Windows Basics mode. This means that there is a programme running that cannot support the advanced colour scheme Win7 uses. What have you recently installed and what programmes are you running?
http://www.sevenforums.com/general-discussion/171255-taskbar-icons-not-showing-window.htmlI am using Win XP SVP 3 on Acer Aspire One Netbook.
I can't get my icons to show with the correct image. Did a search in the forums which go back to 2007. Thought maybe you would have something up-to-date.
Why are they not showing up with the correct image. Do I need to do a repair ? I have my automatic updates on and wondering they that is the cause. Uploaded a sample for you (see attachment). I need a fix.

Hello Nigel,
If you unpin and pin the app to taskbar again, does it help?
I have a windows XP, gateway 200gig768ram. Upon rebooting yesterday, my pc loaded fine until my desktop came up. The background picture appeared and stayed this way for a while with no icons. I reboooted again, still the same. Finally , while rebooting I inserted my Microsoft Office XP Professional startup CD and it kicked on and said I had a desktop recovery. Everything worked fine after that.
I rebooted again and it did the same thing . I have then backed up all important files, but how do I repair this problem of freezing?

Hello! This has been bothering me and I was hoping someone here can help out! Before I did a system restore to factory conditions, I had a lot of MP3 files and the album cover artwork were visible as the icons for each file. Now they're not showing up. All I see is the regular MP3 icon. Why isn't the album art displaying as icons?
Some times the artwork will not stay with the mp3 file itself.
You can use this software to make sure the mp3 file keeps the artwork:
Mp3tag - the universal Tag Editor (ID3v2, MP4, OGG, FLAC, ...)
A friends computer.
On boot up there are no Icons atall on the screen.
They do BRIEFLY show for a fraction of a second but will not stay.
They can be brought back by right clicking desktop then "View" the "show desktop icons" which is already ticked,it is unticked then reticked then the icons come back.
Seperate issue.
There is also coming up bottom right something concerning a "Slideshow" but there is no indicatation what program it is associated with.
(May be powerpoint presentation....need to get rid of it popping up.)
Any ideas
Thanks Ray

Ok, I've had this problem for a few days now, and It's getting annoying to the point where I want to pull my hair out, and it seems to keep getting gradually worse. For some reason, a lot of icons from various sites either show up on the wrong spot, or don't even show up at all. Here are a few screenshots:
Does anyone know the problem or how to fix it?

I have checked in the only two places I was aware of that would cause this:
Folder Options - View ....however, there is no option there to check show Thumbnails. I believe this option should be there at the top, but it isnt.
I also went to Properties of My Computer, Advanced, Performance. It is checked there to show Thumbnails.
But for whatever reason, I only see icons when I should see thumbnails. And yes, I have changed the view to Medium, large, extra large.
Hello Dave,
You might double check through each option in the tutorial below to see if it may help. It's for Windows 7, but it's the same in Windows 8 except "Windows Explorer" is "File Explorer" in OPITION FOUR instead.

On my notebook, I frequently switch between the wired dock and wireless. When I do this the wireless icon or lan icons reappear in the taskbar, even though I've marked them as hide when inactive. If I'm wireless, the lan icon still shows until I hide it again in properties. Same vice-versa. Even when I plug in the power cord if wireless, the lan icon appears again, with the red X and I have to hide it again in properties. Anyone know how I can just have the active (wireless or lan) icon show at the correct times?
For some reason whenever there is a program that is supposed to have the system tray icon on the bottom right hand corner of the screen it doesn't always show up?? I have to close the process from the Windows Task Manager and restart it, otherwise I can't even get to that program because when i try to open it, it says it's already opened ,but it's not on the taskbar so I cant use it. Can anyone help me? I have windows XP Proffesional.

Hi all,
Built my new computer yesterday and installed Windows 7 64 bit, Enterprise.
I have noticed that the file type icons aren't showing in explorer, while little it is extremely annoying as when searching for an excel document for example I just look for the icon.
It seems to work for some icons and not others- as shown in the image below.
Is there any fix for this?
Thanks

http://www.sevenforums.com/general-discussion/248531-file-type-icons-not-showing-explorer.htmlHi
Our PC boots to desktop so that the wallpaper is showing, but no icons or task bars are coming up. I can do ctrl-alt-del to look at the processes. I have opened in safe mode and am currently running scans with AVG, Malware Bytes, Super Anti Spyware & Dr Web Scanner.
Dr Web Scanner has found and eradicated BackDoor.Tdss.565.
We think this started yesterday when our nephew click on a pop up regarding windows security Centre.
We are running XP Service Pack 3.
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/360436/xp-boots-to-desktop-no-icons-or-task-bar-showing/I'm helping a friend with a Dell Computer running Windows XP home. For some reason it is not showing the two small monitor icons in the tray that show I am connected to the internet. I had this problem several years back but can't seem to remember how to fix it. I keep thinking that there is a box to check in control panel to show the network connection.
If somebody could help I sure would appreciate it. I've looked in Google but haven't found the anser.
Many Thanks for any and all assistance.

Sorry I don't have an answer, but what type of display are you using? A TV with HDMI input or a normal monitor with VGA or DVI input.
Have you run sfc /scannow from an elevated command prompt?
Does anything else on your system show any type of problem? Does the Event Viewer show any type of warnings or errors?
Hi this is the problem I am facing. I upgraded for windows 10 few months ago. The problem is when I set an app for default for a file the old icon is only showing. it never changes. For an example if I choose to set VLC media player as default for an Mp4 file which presently opened by windows movie player even if I change it to VLC it will again show the Windows movie app icon instead of VLC. This is a big problem for. I need response asap. The only solution I know is I need to restart explorer. But in windows 8.1 It was all Ok. I have rebuilt the icon cache also. It did not work. So I need a solution. THANKS
http://forums.windowscentral.com/ask-question/440007-why-my-icons-showing-old-ones-even-if-i-change-default-program.htmlHi,
Most programs within Start > All Programs are showing as blank .ink files (see screenshot attached).
Tried the following:
- Rebuilding icon cache as per Icon Cache - Rebuild
- Deleting HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Explorer\File Exts\.Ink\UserChoice
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Pete

Hello!
Recently, the volume and network connection icon on the toolbar at the top of the desktop has disappeared.
I already right clicked on the toolbar > properties > notification area but the volume and network buttons are grey and I cannot select them.
I was wondering how I can get these icons back and why they suddenly disappeared.
Thank you so much!!!

Hello Caleb, and welcome to Seven Forums.
Double check using the tutorial below to see if you have Network and any other system icon you want to show turned on.
System Icons - Turn On or Off
If they are grayed out, then see if the tutorial below may be able to help to enable them again.
System Icons - Enable or Disable
Hope this helps for now,

I recently had to reinstall XP SP3.
I've swtiched everything to Classic view.
Now theres a section of my taskbar, to the immediate left of the system tray,
with a little icon and "Add Hardwar" and ">>".
When I click the ">>", up pop all the icon links to everything in Control Panel.
How do I remove all this?
Thanks!
Right click the taskbar, click Toolbars then Control Panel. You probably dragged it there by mistake.,
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/504576/control-panel-icons-now-showing-in-taskbar/I have been noticing a strange problem with my Win bit It does not happen every day maybe once a week or so When I boot up the system and the desktop loads I noticed that all of my security AVG ZA SpyBot etc program icons in the system tray notification area next to the clock don't load I get the network power volume icons but nothing else tray notification showing.. System not icons I should see icons for my security and other start up programs I have loaded but they don't show I have to reboot the system three or four times before the tray icons will show The system works fine otherwise The security programs run fine when they are loaded so they are not the problem System tray notification icons not showing.. I tried a Google search for this problem and came up with this possible solution System icons do not appear in the notification area in Windows Vista or in Windows until you restart the computer However this seems to only apply to the volume power network System tray notification icons not showing.. icons and not my program icons I also found this but it is for Win xp Systray icons missing Windows Problem Solver I don't really know if any of those quot fixes quot can apply to Win Like I said the problem of quot missing system tray icons quot only happens once a week or so YES I DO System tray notification icons not showing.. have notification set to ON That is the first place I looked So that is not the problem Has anyone else seen this happen in Win If it is a program fault by Microsoft is there a solution Thanks for your help Scott
Try logging off and logging on without restarting and see if that helps.

Self-Build.
Today it was working fine, then earlier this evening, I turned it on,
Then it Boots into Windows, I see the logo, then quickly after this, I see my Desktop, for two seconds, then nothing, the screen went black.
I next tried to RESTORE to an earlier point, but after it restarted, the same thing happened again.
This is all I need. Hopefully, it's a decent fix.
I'm on my iPod. Purer is off.
Thanks for any help.
Yesterday my Windows 10 was running fine until I came back from a shower.
I started up my computer logged into Windows and when I logged in the desktop was black and all I had was a mouse cursor. I opened task manager and I restarted "explorer.exe" but still nothing. I loaded up Google Chrome through the "Run New Task" option in the task manager to start looking up solutions. I've tried so many things, I've scanned for viruses and tried a few things I've seen on other posts.
For everyone else the solutions offered seemed to have worked but not for me.
One post suggested that it might be a virus that is inside windows files.
I don't remember downloading anything that day so I don't know if it can be a virus.
I need help.

I am the administrator and there are two other users on my machine running Home Premium 32.
When I install a new program the icon to run it often appears on the other desktops much to their annoyance - especially since they don't have admin status so it wont run.
If I just delete the icons they are deleted from my desktop also so the question is - How do i tidy up their desktops without affecting mine?
Uninstall the applications that are doing this and then reinstall them and when they are installing it should give you an option for all users or current user only. Tick the current user box and continue installation.
For the ones that dont give that option then once they are installed right click on the programmes .exe and select properties. Then select the security tab and click Edit. Then select a user you dont want to have access to the programme and select remove and then OK
If they still see the shortcuts after that then you need to enable hidden folders in the folder options box then do this:
1- Click the vista starb orb then click on Computer
2- Double click on c: drive then double click on the Users folder
3- Go into each users folder and go to there desktop folder and delete the icons.
