Q: Hard Drive Short and Optimized DST Check : WARNING

When i did the hard drive short and optimized dst chech in the component test to check whether hard disk is functioning well by using HP PC HARDWARE DIAGNOSTICS UEFI in my hp pavilion 15 -e009tu laptop it showed "warning " for both short and optimized checks. My hard disk was replaced fiew weeks before because of some issues. If warning is there... what to do... ?

Preferred Solution: Hard Drive Short and Optimized DST Check : WARNING

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi Gameji.... Welcome aboard... I would suggest to be cautious and proceed as following:- Backup ur essential data immediately on to an external drive.Check for the manufacturer of the HardDisk using Control Panel>>Device ManagerGo online at the manufacturer's web site and look for their diagnostic tools; it must be something like SMART check utility.Altrnatively u may download following, run CrystalDiskInfo, see what is shows for smart data, this is a portable version that does not install anything on your PC, just runs from the folder you unzip it to.Crystal Disk Info.zipFind out the exact cause of the warning and proceed as deem appropriate...Please let me know if u feel stuck or in case some problem Hope this helps.... Hi, i have hp pavilion g6 laptop and its upgraded from windows 8 to 8.1 then windows 10.  From last few days i was getting "Memory_Management", "Kernel_Data_Inpage_Error" and so many other errors with blue screen. Due to this i have to power off the system from main power button by holding for few seconds. Now i was getting hang problem. I saw in task manager that DISK UTILIZATION was 100%. I did a hardware test where i got below results : HARD DRIVE SHORT DST Check : WARNING HARD DRIVE Optimized DST Check  : FAILEDFAILURE ID: 9U3UWX-6KT85B-MFPWWJ-61Q003 Can anybody tell me how to resolve this or i need to replace the hard drive. -ThanksPankaj

A:Hard Drive Short DST Check : WARNING and Optimized DST Check...

Yes you need to replace the hard drive. Since you have upgraded to Windows 10 it is very easy to get recovery media directly from the Microsoft Media Creation Tool. For most people, the problem is not physically swapping out the hard drive, but restoring the operating system since they do not have recovery disks. Post back if you want a service manual and/or video showing the replacement, purchase options for a new hard drive and step-by-step for restoring Windows 10. We would need the full model...g6-????

A:Hard Drive Optimized failed DST Check

Jenna, welcome to the forum. I believe that the hard drive has failed.  Here is the Troubleshooting section for the hard drive.  I suggest following the guide on testing it.  If it shows that it has failed, your only option is to replace it.  Here is a guide to help you replace it.  You should assure that the new hard drive is the same size or larger than the existing one. Please click the Thumbs up + button if I have helped you and click Accept as Solution if your problem is solved.

Had this laptop for about 6 years, had a few issues in the past, but nothing major like this. After, I ran a system dianostic, the result shown that the Hard drive short DST failed. Not totally sure how to do a recovery, I do have the Recovery Discs, so I searched up how to run the discs; turned on the system- press f11-  window loading files- window starting- then it just stuck on a window blue screen with nothing but the cursor. Can I even use the Recovery Discs? I want to replace the old HDD with a new SSD, but I'm not sure if I have to install a new OS or can I recover the old hard drive OS and transfer to the SSD?

A:Hard Drive failure (Hard Drive Short DST Check: Failed)

DST:Fail means  the hard drive has failed and will need to be replaced. If you are still in warranty HP will send a replacement. If not a retail laptop SATA hard drive can be used. Just be sure to get one of at least equal capacity as the original in order to use Recovery Discs. It can be larger, but not smaller capacity. For instance if you have a 500GB hdd you could use a 750GB hdd but not a 320GB hdd.

A:Hard drive Short DST check failed

Hi @Himanshu9001, Thank you for visiting the HP Forums! A great place where you can find solutions for your issues with help from the community! I have looked into your issue about your HP Pavilion Notebook and getting the start up error message failure ID. This error is DST Short Test Failure code. What that means is your Hard drive could be failing. I recommend  the first thing you should do is back-up all your personal files etc as soon as you can. Wondering if maybe reseating the Hard Drive would help. After you reseat it I would run the Hardware Diagnostics again. Please get back to me how this goes. If this post helps you to resolve the issue you can click the Thumbs up icon to show gratitude! Thanks.

A:hard drive short DST check failed

Stop using the laptop. Replace the hard drive with a new one. Get a SATA to usb adapter to connect the old drive (which you will remove) to another computer to try to salvage data. There is a good chance data is still recoverable this way.

A:hard drive short dst check: failed

hello  The 24 character error code is a failure of the short Disk Self Test ( DST ) and would indicate that the Hard Drive is failing and needs to be replaced. If your notebook is still under warranty, contact HP and arrange to have the drive replaced - If needed, you can check your warranty status Here. else you can purchase a hdd and install it yourself, for OS disk you can contact hpIf you live in the US, contact HP Here.  #hpexpertday

I know my hard drive is failing. I cannot boot my computer tried every method. It's in the automatic repair loop. I'm going to have to send it in I'm pretty sure of it. However I was able to access the notepad through the command prompt and noticed that I can still see my files in different folders. Is there a way for me to back up my files? Is there a way I can access a program from command prompt and transfer files? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

try using ubuntu
------------------------------------------------------------------------

UBUNTU Stand Alone DVD

Note the latest version of UBUNTU needs a DVD to use and boot from

if you only have CDs then you can use an older version, version 10 or 11 from this archive list
http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/releases/

It may be possible to boot from another Operating System
This will at least test the Hardware and also see if you can see the Harddrive and possibly get any of your data off.

If you have another PC with a DVDwriter and spare DVD
Download the ISO http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop

UBUNTU version 14 http://releases.ubuntu.com/14.10/
For almost all PCs. The following ISO 32Bit image will work on most machines with Intel/AMD/etc type processors and almost all computers that run Microsoft Windows, as well as newer Apple Macintosh systems based on Intel processors.
http://releases.ubuntu.com/14.10/ubuntu-14.10-desktop-i386.iso

You can also run from a USB device now - if the Machine supports booting off a USB Stick
http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download
http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/create-a-usb-stick-on-windows

A tutorial is here BUT this is for version 9 - so the start up options are slightly different
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/wind...backup-files-from-your-dead-windows-computer/

click on the image "download ubuntu"
Select a location
then begin download
Save the file onto your PC ? remember where you saved it ? so you can find it again to create the image bootable DVD.

You do NOT copy the ISO file onto a DVD - you have to use the ISO to create a bootable DVD
The DVD creator software you have on the PC may have an option to create an image from an ISO

If not - use this free program http://www.imgburn.com/ - Choose the option Write image file to disc
Be very careful when installing , as imgburn now includes and installs a load of unwanted programs, so make sure you read each page during the installation and decline them ALL
OR
you can use this stand alone ISO Burner to burn the ubuntu onto DVD ftp://terabyteunlimited.com/burncdcc.zip

If you need any help burning these images to disk, see the Image Burning Guide, from the ubuntu website.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto

When the UBUNTU DVD boots - you will see a screen - with Language on the left panel and two option images labelled

== > Try ubuntu
== > Install ubuntu
You can try Ubuntu without making any changes to your computer, directly from this DVD

Use "Try ubunto" ONLY. This option will run from the DVD and "will not" install onto your harddrive
Be careful, if you do install onto the PC - you will wipe the data and software OFF your hard drive.., you have been warned, only use the option "try ubuntu"
Now you should see a UBUNTU desktop
This at least proves the main parts of the PC are working
NOTE: if you only see a black screen - then this is a known issue, and can be resolved by using the following:-
On some hardware configurations, you need to set some kernel parameters for ubuntu to boot or work properly. A common one is nomodeset, which is needed for some graphic cards that otherwise boot in to a black screen or corrupted splash, acpi_osi= to fix lcd backlight and other problems.
full details are here
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1613132

If you press the F6 key, a menu at the bottom will open allowing you to set kernel options with the space bar or enter key. You can close the menu with escape key and resume booting by selecting the option ?try ubuntu without installing? (please note that session does allow you to install ubuntu once you found the kernel options cured your problem).Click to expand...

If everything worked OK and you should be on the ubuntu desktop

An issue I had resolved a few months ago has begun occuring again wherein the laptop has difficulty loading things when started up and soon after crashes and has to be restarted I assume this means the hard drive has failed again and so I have no doubts about how to resolve this but I am posting this query to ask Why Why has a laptop I have had for not even a year DST short failure... drive again. Hard check at this point already had the same problem occur twice even with replacing the part that broke the first time I'm willing to assume it's something to do with excessive use as I will admit it is switched for a Hard drive short DST check failure... again. good part of most days often for several hours as I play games on Steam on it I do not currently plan to have the hard drive replaced again as this is clearly an issue that is going to keep occuring the way things are and so I may as well get a Hard drive short DST check failure... again. PC that won't break every time a gust of wind hits it Any information on why this is occuring and how it could potentially be prevented in the future is appreciated particularly if it provides a solution that doesn't involve paying an extortionate amount of money

I don't have any recovery disc or back ups, is the laptop now unusable? I try to boot up but the laptop either freezes on login or on desktop. A:Hard Drive Short DST Check Fail?

It appears the impact of dropping your computer damaged the hard drive. The Hard Drive Short  DST Check Fail error is an indication that the hard drive has failed or is about to fail. You will need to replace the hard drive with a like unit and use your HP Recovery Media to return the computer to a factory like state. If you didn't create your HP Recovery Media when you first setup your computer, you will have to purchase this media from HP. Please see USB - Windows 10 64b Recovery Kit to order the media or contact HP Customer Support to purchase the medai, If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to ask. Please click the White KUDOS "Thumbs Up" to show your appreciation

Hi, Sadly to say, the HDD on your machine failed. The following link shows its specs:          http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=c03663774 You can replace larger (capatity) and faster HDD. Any standard 2.5" SATA HDD on the market today can do the job. You need Recovery media to rebuild your machine. Did you create one ? Otherwise, please try:              http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/bph07143 Regards.

Laptop is way past warranty. Thanks in advance for all responses.

I kept getting a blue screen with an error code 0xc0000185. I ordered the recovery Disks from HP but when I went to recover the machine, it sort of reads the cd and then I get the HP logo and the circle just spins and spins. We left it alone for hours and nothing. I ran a Hard Drive Test and it said Hard Drive Short DST Check: FAILEDthen gave this Failure ID: 63621R-7AQ87K-MFPV6K-60XL03Product K7U05UA HARD DRIVE 1 SYSTEM EXTENSIVE TEST: FAILED Any idea what I can do? It is just out of warranty- Of Course.

A:Pavilon Failed Hard Drive Short DST Check

Hi, The 24 character error id does confirm a failure of the short Disk Self Test and would indicate that the Hard Drive is failing and needs to be replaced.  This is also consistent with the issues you describe. If you would like a guide on replacing the Hard Drive yourself, please let me know. Regards, DP-K

Hi, The  error code is a failure of the short Disk Self Test ( DST ) and would indicate that the Hard Drive is failing and needs to be replaced.  This is also consistent with the boot issue you describe. If your notebook is still under warranty, contact HP and arrange to have the drive replaced - If needed, you can check your warranty status Here. If you live in the US, contact HP Here. If you are in another part of the world, start Here. If you are out of warranty and would like a guide on replacing the Hard Drive yourself, please let me know - include the full Model No. and Product No. of your 15 series notebook - see Here for a further explanation. Regards, DP-K

First off I have a HP 2000 Notebook PC with Windows 8 and I used Internet Explorer 10.

Processor Name : AMD E-300APU with Radeon ™ HD Graphics.

A few days ago, my computer started getting slower & slower, not responding, freezing up and even going to a blue screen before coming back to the page I was at.

So I put it in Safe Mode with Networking and ran Malwarebytes full scan - nothing.

Then I hit F2 at reboot and ran some of the tests on there - Battery was Okay, memory was okay, but this one failed :

Hard Drive Short DST Check - Software Error

Failure ID : RSG080-6P579C-MFGJXG-60VS03
Product ID : D1E80UA#ABA

Does this mean I need to update with windows update, that there isn't enough memory or does it mean my Hard Drive needs to be replaced? This laptop is only 1-1 1/2 years old....

A:Hard Drive Short DST Check Failed - Software Error?!

Your hard drive is probably failing. I would get your important data off it as soon as possible. After your important data is off download Seatools for Windows and do a diagnostic to confirm the hard drive failure.

I have an hp pavillion that will not boot up. It was extremely before this so I tried to do a system restore. It will not boot up at all now, just shows the HP screen. A:Disk Read Error on boot, Hard Drive Short DST Check fails

The hard drive has failed and will need to be replaced.  A retail laptop SATA hard drive can be used-Western Digital, Seagate, Toshiba, etc. Just be sure to get one of at least equal capacity as the original in order to use Recovery Media to install Windows. It can be larger, but not smaller capacity. For instance if you have a 500GB hdd you could use a 750GB hdd but not a 320GB hdd. Your model is not one of the easiest to replace hdd on but the Maintenance & Service Guide will help you or your chosen repair shop.http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c04438537

So this really irritates me because I just spent hundreds of dollars sending my laptop to HP last year because the hard drive completely failed. I have a 1TB hybrid hard drive and 22Gb solid state used for caching.  When I booted up my computer Intel Rapid Storage Technology said there was an issue.  When I opened it, it says that the status of: SATA disk (932 GB)(System) Accelerated, is Failed.  My SATA_Array_0001 22GB is fine though.  So I ran a System Quick Test, everything passed except Hard Drive Short DST Check: FAILEDFAILURE ID: Q4MP7Q-6RA82U-MFGJWK-60W303 This is weird because other than the computer telling me there is something wrong every time I restart it, It seems to run just fine.  Im just worried because I don't want it to randomly die on me one day.

A:SATA disk failed and Hard Drive Short DST Check: Failed

Hi there @nmulji,  Thank you for joining in on the HP Support Forums and Welcome! This is a great place to ask questions, find solutions and get help from others in the community! I read your post on the HP Support Forums and understand that the Hard Drive in your HP ENVY TouchSmart 15t-j100 Select Edition CTO Notebook PC failed the Short DST Check.  SMART (Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology System) uses a technology known as predictive failure analysis to tell you when a hard drive failure is imminent. Have you tried to Restore the BIOS? If not, please try this step first. Then, just to be on the safe side, back up your data that way it does not get lost. However, there might be certain conditions that cause a hard drive failure message to display when a problem does not exist (a false positive). To fix false positive hard drive errors, please try updating the hard drive firmware. You can check whether an update is available by going to the  Get software and drivers page. You will need to put in your Model Number and then click the links that pertain to the computer configuration and see if a hard drive update is available.  You could also try to do a  Disk Defragment to consolidate files and move them to another section of the drive where errors are less likely to occur. Did this reply resolve your issue or answer your question? If yes, then please share the good news! Let others know this reply was helpful by clicking the Accept as Solution button. You can also show your appreciation by clicking the Thumbs Up. If you require further assistance, I would be more than happy to continue to help you. Please re-post with the results of the troubleshooting. Thanks!

Hi nbsp As stated I have an HP envy laptop that I purchased year ago Just days ago my warranty has ended At the same point in time I was also trying to roll back to a previous windows install as there was a pesky app that was installed when I lend the laptop to my friend When I got it back it works just fine but it had that malware in it that I want to remove nbsp So I fired up system restore and go on restoring It finished doing so until nbsp it restarts When it restarts I was stuck in the loading screen with the HP logo for hours to which I decide to fire up the restore through the recovery media All works well until I got stuck in the installation I got stuck at When I searched on the internet why the reason might be because the wi-fi adapter is still on I am able to open it SM... Long Short DST check but Disk DST and passed Hard failed, up and take it off for a moment But because I need to go to work I decided against it I turned the laptop off and set off nbsp When I got back I can't even let it proceed to the installation saying that there's an issue with teh windows install and it needs to reboot Did that same thing several times and nothing happened nbsp Then I decided to go to BIOS and do the hard disk check It passed the SMART test but failed the Short DST as well as Long DST It produced the error code nbsp MFUC T- RG K-CD WMG- DK nbsp Is it possible for me to resolve the issue by my own through another reinstall Or is the HDD really is ruined If this is the case I'm probably just going to go ahead and replace it with an SSD

A:Hard Disk Short DST and Long DST check failed, but passed SM...

Whenever the Hard Disk Short DST test fails that indicates that the Hard Disk Drive has failed and that requires a replacement to resolve the issue This issue could be due to Application or driver conflicts, virus issues, file corruptions due to incompatible applications, improper shutdowns, update failures due to conflicts, sudden power surges, if notebook is dropped etc.. HP will provide a replacement Hard Disk Drive if the Notebook warranty is Active, If not you need buy a SATA Hard Disk Drive from a retail shop nearby Please make sure you are getting at least equal capacity as the original one in order to use Recovery Disks. If you need you can buy a larger, but not smaller capacity Hard Disk Drive. For example if you have a 500GB Hard Disk Drive you can upgrade it to 750GB Hard Disk Drive but not 320GB Hard Disk Drive Please try the below shown troubleshooting steps once:Step 01. Remove the battery and unplug the AC/Power AdapterStep 02. Press and hold the Power button for more than 30 SecondsStep 03. Plug in the AC/Power Adapter (leave the Battery out for now)Step 04. Press the Power button and check if the Unit works normal If the above mentioned steps does not help, then you can try reseating the Hard Drive on your Notebook If the issue persists again please Contact HP if your HP Notebook is under warranty, HP would replace the Hard Disk Drive and provide you a Recovery media to restore factory operating system after replacement (if you've not yet created Recovery Discs/USB Media) Note: Back up all the personal data to an external drive if it's possible. Kyle, welcome to the forum. This error message is telling you that your hard drive has failed.  Your only option is to replace it.  You can test it further using the SMART test from the BIOS.  When you replace it you should buy one the same size or larger.  If you didn't backup your personal data, you will not be able to retreive it.  You should begin doing this immediately after you replace the drive. Please click the Thumbs up + button if I have helped you and click Accept as Solution if your problem is solved.

Hey all I'm technologically challenged and this is my first time posting on the forum so lemme know if I miss anything....Like the subject says my notebook was freezing and running slowly I didn't know what was happening but long story short I can't get past the boot up screen anymore with HP logo and I ran diagnostic and got hard drive short and long dst failed. I'm pretty frustrated cause my laptop is less than 2 yrs old and my warranty expired how can I replace the damaged hard drive and what exactly should I buy? Also will my files be lost?

A:Hard drive long and short dst fail

A retail laptop/mobile 2.5" SATA hard drive can be used.Western Digital, Seagate, Toshiba, etc. Just be sure to get one of at least equal capacity as the original in order to use Recovery Discs. It can be larger, but not smaller capacity. For instance if you have a 500GB hdd you could use a 750GB hdd but not a 320GB hdd. Sorry to say files also die with a hard drive. Best practice with any computer is an external USB hard drive to back up files.

Hi,            The failure ID refers to Hard disk drive failure. If the unit is under warranty, then you can call the HP Support to get the Hard disk drive replaced if not you have to get the Hard disk drive replaced yourself and then reinstall the operating system using recovery disk.

HP diagnostics returned error code 9lhvwc-5rg85u-mfh15f-60t903 during a hard drive short self test this evening. Prior to the test, the disk drive was working very slowly, as if it had trouble reading data. I am able to log in with windows in it's normal mode, but the drive performs poorly. Safe mode is better. I own an HP dv7-6175us with serial number 5ch134ijx7.

A:Hard Drive failure during short test

I suspect it's an issue with the header, because the disk drive was also clicking, and it was the click you hear when the accelerometer halts the hard drive. I suspect it's impact/shock damage. It was repeatedly clicking for about 5 time before I shut it down manually.

Bought this Pavilion 17t in December of 2014.  Upgraded to Windows 10 about 6 months ago.  Just last week the laptop got stuck in an automatic repair loop. I tried a hard reboot and that didn't work.  I ran the diagnostics test and got a Hard Drive Short DST check Failed.  Failure ID Q4JF9G-7G189F-MFPV7A-60SU03  Product ID J7B57AV.   Does this mean my hard drive is failing after such a short time?  Is there any solution other than an expensive repair?

A:HP Pavilion 17t Hard Drive Short DST failed

Yes unfortunately it means the hard drive must be replaced. If you are willing to do it yourself, hard drives are probably not as expensive as you fear. We would need your precise model number to provide the correct manual and instructions and likely a video. Since you had Windows 10 installed and activated you can use media downloaded for free direct from Microsoft.

Hello there! My computer recently started rebooting (BSOD) nonstop after turning it on, and it won't even go into Safe Mode. After running a system quick check, I received a message stating Hard Drive Short DST: Failed. With this message, I assume I need to replace my hard drive. I'm not sure where the best place to look for a new laptop hard drive is and how to find one on the HP store. Recovering potentially lost data is also a concern. What's the best way to go about replacing the drive and attempting to recover what was on it?

A:HP envy dv6 Hard Drive Short DST: Failed

You can use any manufacturer's hard drive. HP uses Toshiba, Seagate, etc in their laptops-they do not make their own. Western Digital is a popular replacement. Best Buy, Staples even Wal Mart carries hard drives. Just be sure to get a 2.5 " hard drive for laptops not a 3.5" desktop hard drive.Example:http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=8516564&CatId=1277 As to recovering files you may be able to do that by installing the old hard drive into a usb enclosure then plug it into usb port of a working machine. If the hard drive has any life left in it you should be able to browse it and copy files over to hard drive of host machne.Example:http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3195233&CatId=2781

Hi,

I recently aquired a new molex-sata adapter for adding a second HDD to my computer, but when I plugged it in and turned the PC on, it won't power up. Without either hard drive plugged into the power supply, the PC will start but obviously go no further, but with either hard drive plugged in the computer simply won't start.

I've tried with three molex-sata adapters now and none of them will make it work, so I was wondering if it is likely that the new adapter has ruined my hard drive? If not then any tips for fixing it?

Thanks very much

Any help would be appreciated, Thanks.  Yes, the files can most likely still be retrieved.  To do this, you would need to take the hard drive out of the notebook and connect it directly to a desktop computer or insert it into an external hard drive dock/cradle and browse to the files you need.  If you feel this is too difficult then you could take it to a local computer repair store and they'll be able to do this for you (for their fee). Once you've got the old drive out, you can have another put in and recover the operating system using the HP Recovery Media and it'll put the notebook back into the same condition as it came out of the box.

So i got this hp 2000 notebook pre installed win 8 from a friend. I did some HP tests and shows HD short DST Failure.
I was able to refresh the pc and it does run per sa but constant always getting dst failures. So i assume its dying. I bought a new hard drive for the unit. Now if i put it in, will windows setup pull the product key from the bios? I put windows 8 on a usb key. Can anyone guide me through the process?

A:hp 2000 notebook Hard Drive DST short failure, Reinstall?

Hi, if the PC came originally with Windows 8 preinstalled the product key is embedded in the BIOS so it would be detected automatically. Here is a great tutorial how to install Windows 8 Clean Install - Windows 8.

Good luck, werty

My laptop will not boot, the screen comes on and the dell logo is there and the lights flash around the like it's trying to boot and then it goes dark and that's it.  When I check the setup it can find the hard drive, it lists it by the HDD.  When I run diagnostics it fails with short test unsuccessful.  I have reseated the hard drive and tried to reboot,  but it is not working.  I'd like to run chkdsk /r from the command console like I saw in one of the possible solutions, but I don't know how to get to the command console.  I'm thinking I need a new hard drive but I would like to try everything to save this one first.

Suddenly my dell latitude d620 stopped working. Message when I boot the laptop is "Start DST Short Test - no hard drive detected - error 1000-0141".

I removed the hard drive (hitachigst travelstar) and placed another one from another laptop. The laptop worked well. I placed the 1st hard drive in the 2nd laptop. I got the same error as above.

So is something wrong with the hard drive???

When I shake it gently, I can hear a small part moving inside. This doesnt happen in the 2nd hard drive. So is something broken too?

I'm getting a bad hard drive warning.
Should I get a new hard drive?
If so is there a way for me to move everything exactly as it is over to a new hard drive, I mean drivers, programs and all.
I use my computer for recording in Pro Tools HD and it's very sensitive to any kind of modifications.
Is there a way to migrate to a new hard drive and for it to be 100% exactly the same?

Thanks

I am working on a Dell Inspiron 546ST desktop! I went through the steps of a complete system recovery (Back to Factory). Everything seemed to go fine no warnings or error messages. When I rebooted I got this message from I believe is the Bios (American Megatrends) "Hard drive self monitoring system Parameter Exceeded normal operating range" The warning also said that there might or might not be a HDD problem and to hit F2 to continue. That just put me into the Bios, I did check that HDD was recognized which it was and I checked boot order. Does anyone have an Idea? Do you think that removing the battery to reset the Bios might work?

Windows detected a hard drive problem.
Back up your files immediately to prevent information loss, and then contact
computer manufacturer to determine if you need to repair or replace the disk.

This is the warning message. Can anyone help?
I do not have any warranty on computer.
It may software problem.
I did not have any restore points prior to this or backup disk.

A:Hard drive warning

First thing you should do is back up your personal data like the message says.

Unless you don't care about the data.

After you do that, you can download the hard drive manufacturer's diagnostic tools to examine the disk. Or maybe use other tools to recover the partition or data.

But first--back your data up or tell us that you don't care about the data.

The OS presented a hard drive warning message. This is the Event Viewer info:

'Windows Disk Diagnostic detected a S.M.A.R.T. fault on disk ST910021AS ATA Device (volumes C:\). This disk might fail; back up your computer now. All data on the hard disk, including files, documents, pictures, programs, and settings might be lost if your hard disk fails. To determine if the hard disk needs to be repaired or replaced, contact the manufacturer of your computer. If you can't back up (for example, you have no CDs or other backup media), you should shut down your computer and restart when you have backup media available. In the meantime, do not save any critical files to this disk.'

1. Is there anything proactive that I can and should do regarding the functioning of the drive?

2. Is this type of notice a generally good predictor of a failing drive?

Mark

A:OS hard drive warning?

It's a clear a message as you'll ever get that there is a problem with the drive.

Backup whatever is important to you, and then contact Seagate as your hard drive may be under warranty. If it is they should replace it.

Win7 is sending me a lot of warning messages that tell me my new Samsung drive (HD103SJ) is about to fail. I checked the drive with DickCheckup and it didn't report any problems. That utility records data every 10 minutes. I assume that Win7 is getting something from the SMART output and flagging it, but my guess is that the drive is okay as indicated by DiskCheckup. So, I would like to turn off the annoying messages. Is there any way to do that?

FWIW, I have made multiple images of the OS (resides on the Samsung drive) and use the rest of the drive only for backups. If it dies, I can recover.

A:Can I turn off the hard drive warning?

goto samsung's website and download their hard drive tools and test with that. Those might give you a better idea of whats wrong with the drive and if you need to RMA the drive.

Hi Lost896, welcome to the board,

Before getting into more complicated trouble shooting, first, I recommend to make sure your SATA cable is making good connection by wiggle and tug on it. Replace the cables with aftermarket ones when you have a chance. Loosen SATA cable is a know cause for problem of the this type.

Hope this would fix it. Post back.

Hi From a past few days, whenever I fire up my Notebook PC, a warning shows at the start: "The SMART hard disk check has detected an imminent failure. Hello,
I awoke this morning to a box that appears to be from windows stating that my hard drive is about to fail and that I should back up my data immediately (done).  After further research though it appears that there are also viruses that mimic this alert for different purposes.  Is there a way we can scan/search my system and determine if my hard drive is really about to fail or whether I have a virus?

Thanks,

A:Hard Drive Fail Warning or Virus?

Hi there,my name is Marius and I will assist you with your malware related problems. Before we move on, please read the following points carefully. First, read my instructions completely. If there is anything that you do not understand kindly ask before proceeding. Perform everything in the correct order. Sometimes one step requires the previous one. If you have any problems while following my instructions, Stop there and tell me the exact nature of your problem. Do not run any other scans without instruction or add/remove software unless I tell you to do so. This would change the output of our tools and could be confusing for me. Post all logfiles as a reply rather than as an attachment unless I specifically ask you. If you can not post all logfiles in one reply, feel free to use more posts. If I don't hear from you within 3 days from this initial or any subsequent post, then this thread will be closed. Stay with me. I will give you some advice about prevention after the cleanup process. Absence of symptoms does not always mean the computer is clean. My first language is not english. So please do not use slang or idioms. It could be hard for me to read. Thanks for your understanding.   Use the Windows Error Checking utility (Check Disk), with the options to fix file system errors and scan the disk surface for errors, attempt recovery of data and repair the disk: Click the "Windows Orb" Start button, then click Computer. Right-click on the drive that you wish to check > Properties > Tools tab In the "Error checking" section, click on Check now. Place a checkmark in both boxes > Start. If the disk you have chosen is the Windows system disk: A message will notify you that a restart is necessary ask "Do you want to check for hard disk errors the next time you start your computer?". Click Schedule disk check > OK and close all windows. Re-start the computer. The disk will be checked when the system boots. This will take some time to run and at times may appear stalled but just let it run. When the disk check is complete, the system will re-start automatically and load Windows.A log of the disk check is recorded only if the scheduled re-start is used, and only for drives on the same HDD as the Operating System. To open Event Viewer and view the log: Click the "Windows Orb" Start button -> type "eventvwr" without the quotes -> press the key. The Event Viewer window will open. In the left pane, expand "Windows Logs" and then click on Application. In the right pane, at the top, click on the column heading Source to sort the list alphabetically. Look in the Source column for "Wininit", with an entry corresponding to the date and time of the disk check. Click on that Wininit entry to select it. On the top main menu, click Action > Copy > Copy Details as Text. Paste the contents into your next reply.

beings everything is working perfectly now, i would like to make an exact copy of my hard drive. i do have access to an external usb hard drive enclosure where i could slide in a new hard drive for transferring and storing the clone. 1st question - which program is easiest for a novice?......(presently wondering about drive image and norton ghost.) 2nd question - do the hard drives have to match exactly (gbs, speeds, brands etc) when making the clone? with hard drives being so reasonably priced these days, i would like to be able just to remove the "bad" one and slide in the clone to get me up and running again - then later i can reformat the "bad" one and use it for the clone. i am running windows xp pro - 120gb hard drive with two partitions.....thanks in advance for your response!

A:Hard drive warning, is it covered by Dell?

Hobbesss
I've had my current Dell XPS 8700 desktop PC for two years. It has a 2 TB hard drive and a much smaller SSD drive to speed the computer up using Intel Rapid Storage Technology. Today the Intel Rapid Storage program had an alert message saying the following:
"SATA disk on Controller 0, Port 0: At risk (SMART event)"
After researching online, I figured out that this referred to a problem with my 2TB hard drive. My computer is behaving fine currently, but people online seem to suggest that SMART events are rarely false positives, and are early warnings that my hard drive could be anywhere from days to months away from failing.
I downloaded some diagnostic problems and had windows check the drive for errors, and nothing was found except for one program that mentioned the SMART event but with no other information.
My question is this: I've owned this computer for two years, my warranty is either three or four years. My computer is working fine now, but this alert seems to suggest that soon my hard drive will cease to work. Will my Dell warranty cover a replacement right now? Do I have to wait for the hard drive to fail (Which would not be an optimal situation, as that would mean I would likely lose tons of information i don't currently have a way to back up)? Will Dell install a new hard drive? How will all my data get transferred over?
Thank you in advance for your answer.
 Hobbesss
I very much doubt that a Dell warranty will replace any hard drive, that either has not failed, or has serious issues.
As you state that the XPS 8700 'is working fine now', please explain why you cannot backup all your essential files and folders to other media, eg either a USB thumb drive, or an USB external hard drive?.

Here is the message I am getting after running the lenovo solutions diagnostic  WHD01V000-UJ7WQFWhat does this mean?My computer is a week old, got it off ebay, new, but had been set up already.  It has been running quite slow, when I open 20 tabs in firefox it will glitch and sometimes freeze, sometimes I can't access my files, it just says file explorer on the top and displays nothing and I can't close them.  It has 6gb ram and a core i5, e431 model, so it shouldnt be running so slow and this diagnostic worries me.  I called Lenovo before running the diagnostic and they said it could be a hard drive failure.  Anyone know this error message?

A:SMART short self-test Warning???

Hi,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

If the result of "SMART short self-test" returns an error code, the hard drive has indeed failed or is about to. Then you may want to do a repair or have a new hard disk.

Take a backup of all your data while the hard drive can still be accessed and contact Lenovo Technical support if you are under warranty.

Click here to open a link where you can select the country and get the exact contact support number. I?m sure they will be a great help.

Had some problems with my lap top freezing and then going to a blue screen error message.  Told me that I did not have a hard drive or an operating system.  Usually just turning off and resting made everything OK.  Now I get the error message that my hard drive has failed the SMART test and is in danger of crashing -- I have backed up everything but now what do I need to do?

Dell optiplex GX110
P3 800
On boot up, I periodically get a warning that the secondary hard drive is not recognized and to press F1 to boot or F2 to go into setup.
There is no second hard drive installed.

Any recommendations?

It's 10 years old.....reflash the bios?
A new cmos battery was installed 2 years ago....try another new battery?
ignore it and continue booting till what ever is wrong disables the computer?
Time to replace the computer?
Other?

A:Dell not recognizing secondary hard drive warning

I would try another cmos battery, no sense in giving up now, those old gx's are bullet proof.

I would not attempt a bios flash unless it is a last resort. Last bios version from Dell is A09

Does that have a socket or Slot processor?

Greetings and Welcome to The Forums!!My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems. I have put together somethings for you to keep in mind while I am helping you to make things go easier and faster for both of usPlease do not run any tools unless instructed to do so.
We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability. Please do not attach logs or use code boxes, just copy and paste the text.
Due to the high volume of logs we receive it helps to receive everything in the same format, and code boxes make the logs very difficult to read. Also, attachments require us to download and open the reports when it is easier to just read the reports in your post. Please read every post completely before doing anything.
Pay special attention to the NOTE: lines, these entries identify an individual issue or important step in the cleanup process. Please provide feedback about your experience as we go.
A short statement describing how the computer is working helps us understand where to go next, for example: I am still getting redirected, the computer is running normally, etc. Please do not describe the computer as "the same", this requires the extra step of looking back at your previous post.NOTE: At the top of your post, click on the Watch Topic Button, select Immediate Notification, and click on Proceed. This will send you an e-mail as soon as I reply to your topic, allowing us to resolve the issue faster. NOTE: Backup any files that cannot be replaced. Removing malware can be unpredictable and this step can save a lot of hartaches if things don't go as planed. You can put them on a CD/DVD, external drive or a pen drive, anywhere except on the computer. NOTE: It is good practice to copy and paste the instructions into notepad and print them in case it is necessary for you to go offline during the cleanup process. To open notepad, navigate to Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad. Please remember to copy the entire post so you do not miss any instructions.DeFogger: Please download DeFogger to your desktop.

Double click DeFogger to run the tool.
The application window will appear Click the Disable button to disable your CD Emulation drivers Click Yes to continue A 'Finished!' message will appear Click OKDeFogger may ask you to reboot the machine, if it does - click OKDo not re-enable these drivers until otherwise instructed.Security CheckDownload Security Check by screen317 from here.Save it to your Desktop.Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.Download DDS:Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the links below and save it to your desktop:

Hello,

I found a hard drive somewhere is my house, a Seagate barracuda 7200 RPM, 250 GB and I wanted to know if there is a way to check if it's working , I don't even know what's in it, so I wanted to know if I can do something with it,assuming it does work, for example combine it with my current hard drive for some extra storage, or maybe install my windows 7 on it if the hard drive I'm using now fails in future (like a backup or something-is it possible?)

Thanks all!

A:How to check a hard drive?

mibaup,
I'll assume that the drive is a sata drive and not IDE please confirm. If it's a sata drive then all you need is a free power connector off your PSU and a spare sata cable. With these two cables connected to the drive and the other end if the sata connected to a free sata port on the mobo then all you will need to do is boot up the system as normal and then locate the newly added drive and have a look around. If it doesn't show up you may need to have a look in disk manager but lets take this one step at a time. Please report back when you install and boot up.

A:Hard Drive Check.

you can use windows chkdsk
OR
often the drive manufacturer will have a utility that you can run, some tests will destroy your data other wont
Have a look in device manager and see who made the harddrive

Hey guys here a question for ya, Is there any way to diagnose a hard drive remotely to know if it going bad or has any bad sectors, cause the check disk doesn't really do much, In case some are familiar with Linux and what not . There Disk utilities can show you if the hard drive is going bad or has a bad sector . Be awesome if there way :)

A:Hard Drive Check

Windows Check Disk (Error Checker) only checks for errors in the Windows file system and (optionally) checks for bad sectors.

To check the drive's physical health you need to use the drive manufacturer's diagnostic software. The links are here: Hard Drive Diagnostics Tools and Utilities (Storage) - TACKtech Corp.

Hello to all,

I have DELL inspiron 1525 notebook computer and I'm preparing to make downgrade to win XP. I have read about integrating SATA driver into win xp installation (slipstream), but I'm not sure how under Vista to check if I really have SATA hard drive in my laptop.
Can you help?
Thank you

A:How to check if my hard drive is SATA?

If you have My Computer icon R click on it, go to Properties > Device manager (if you haven't got a My Computer icon - go to Start > Control Panel > Device Manager) then expand Disk drives by clicking on + sign and you should see your hard drive listed there - the letters after the numbers will tell you if it is SATA
