I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, The 24 character error code does confirm a Smart failure and would indicate that the Hard Drive is failing and needs to be replaced. If your notebook is still under warranty, contact HP and arrange to have the drive replaced - If needed, you can check your warranty status Here. If you live in the US, contact HP Here. If you are in another part of the world, start Here. If you are out of warranty and would like a guide on replacing the Hard Drive yourself, please let me know. Regards, DP-K

The electronics on the disk-drive have 'S.M.A.R.T'.SMART does real-time monitoring of many characteristics of the disk-drive, e.g.,* how many milli-seconds from "off" to "ready",* maximum temperature,* number of hours of usage,* number of "bad" sectors that have been mapped to some "spare" sectors,* and so on. So, a "SMART failure" is an indication that the "observed" values have exceeded the "normal" values, i.e., "out-of-range". Take the notice as a warning that your disk-drive is "dying". Google-search for 'download SPECCY free'.Download, install, and run it, to look at all the measurements in the SMART categories. Make a "backup" of your files/music/pictures/bookmarks onto an external disk-drive,or buy a brand-new disk-drive, connect it, and "clone" your current disk-drive onto the new disk-drive,and reconfigure your computer to boot from the new disk-drive. Is your disk-drive relatively "new", e.g., less than 2 years old?If so, it may still be warrantied by the manufacturer,i.e., ship them your disk-drive, and they will ship you an *EMPTY* replacement drive. You'll need to reinstall Windows, and reload your files from your "backup".

So this really irritates me because I just spent hundreds of dollars sending my laptop to HP last year because the hard drive completely failed. I have a 1TB hybrid hard drive and 22Gb solid state used for caching.  When I booted up my computer Intel Rapid Storage Technology said there was an issue.  When I opened it, it says that the status of: SATA disk (932 GB)(System) Accelerated, is Failed.  My SATA_Array_0001 22GB is fine though.  So I ran a System Quick Test, everything passed except Hard Drive Short DST Check: FAILEDFAILURE ID: Q4MP7Q-6RA82U-MFGJWK-60W303 This is weird because other than the computer telling me there is something wrong every time I restart it, It seems to run just fine.  Im just worried because I don't want it to randomly die on me one day.

Hi there @nmulji,  Thank you for joining in on the HP Support Forums and Welcome! This is a great place to ask questions, find solutions and get help from others in the community! I read your post on the HP Support Forums and understand that the Hard Drive in your HP ENVY TouchSmart 15t-j100 Select Edition CTO Notebook PC failed the Short DST Check.  SMART (Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology System) uses a technology known as predictive failure analysis to tell you when a hard drive failure is imminent. Have you tried to Restore the BIOS? If not, please try this step first. Then, just to be on the safe side, back up your data that way it does not get lost. However, there might be certain conditions that cause a hard drive failure message to display when a problem does not exist (a false positive). To fix false positive hard drive errors, please try updating the hard drive firmware. You can check whether an update is available by going to the  Get software and drivers page. You will need to put in your Model Number and then click the links that pertain to the computer configuration and see if a hard drive update is available.  You could also try to do a  Disk Defragment to consolidate files and move them to another section of the drive where errors are less likely to occur. Did this reply resolve your issue or answer your question? If yes, then please share the good news! Let others know this reply was helpful by clicking the Accept as Solution button. You can also show your appreciation by clicking the Thumbs Up. If you require further assistance, I would be more than happy to continue to help you. Hi nbsp As stated I have an HP envy laptop that I purchased year ago Just days ago my warranty has ended At the same point in time I was also trying to roll back to a previous windows install as there was a pesky app that was installed when I lend the laptop to my friend When I got it back it works just fine but it had that malware in it that I want to remove nbsp So I fired up system restore and go on restoring It finished doing so until nbsp it restarts When it restarts I was stuck in the loading screen with the HP logo for hours to which I decide to fire up the restore through the recovery media All works well until I got stuck in the installation I got stuck at When I searched on the internet why the reason might be because the wi-fi adapter is still on I am able to open it SM... Long Short DST check but Disk DST and passed Hard failed, up and take it off for a moment But because I need to go to work I decided against it I turned the laptop off and set off nbsp When I got back I can't even let it proceed to the installation saying that there's an issue with teh windows install and it needs to reboot Did that same thing several times and nothing happened nbsp Then I decided to go to BIOS and do the hard disk check It passed the SMART test but failed the Short DST as well as Long DST It produced the error code nbsp MFUC T- RG K-CD WMG- DK nbsp Is it possible for me to resolve the issue by my own through another reinstall Or is the HDD really is ruined If this is the case I'm probably just going to go ahead and replace it with an SSD

A:Hard Disk Short DST and Long DST check failed, but passed SM...

Whenever the Hard Disk Short DST test fails that indicates that the Hard Disk Drive has failed and that requires a replacement to resolve the issue This issue could be due to Application or driver conflicts, virus issues, file corruptions due to incompatible applications, improper shutdowns, update failures due to conflicts, sudden power surges, if notebook is dropped etc.. HP will provide a replacement Hard Disk Drive if the Notebook warranty is Active, If not you need buy a SATA Hard Disk Drive from a retail shop nearby Please make sure you are getting at least equal capacity as the original one in order to use Recovery Disks. If you need you can buy a larger, but not smaller capacity Hard Disk Drive. For example if you have a 500GB Hard Disk Drive you can upgrade it to 750GB Hard Disk Drive but not 320GB Hard Disk Drive Please try the below shown troubleshooting steps once:Step 01. Remove the battery and unplug the AC/Power AdapterStep 02. Press and hold the Power button for more than 30 SecondsStep 03. Plug in the AC/Power Adapter (leave the Battery out for now)Step 04. Press the Power button and check if the Unit works normal If the above mentioned steps does not help, then you can try reseating the Hard Drive on your Notebook If the issue persists again please Contact HP if your HP Notebook is under warranty, HP would replace the Hard Disk Drive and provide you a Recovery media to restore factory operating system after replacement (if you've not yet created Recovery Discs/USB Media) Note: Back up all the personal data to an external drive if it's possible. Otherwise you could connect the failed HDD via SATA to USB adapter with another PC or same PC after replacement of HDD & re-installation of OS and try copying /recovering the files. My laptop wouldn't restart after I updated it and a hard disk error came up so I ran a hardware diagnostic test and it said the smart check passed but the short DST failed. I don't know what to do now.

A:Passed smart check but failed short DST hardware diagnostic

Did you do the extensive Test? If so, and you got the same response: Failed. I'm afraid, you might need a new Hard Drive. If your PC is under warranty, call HP Support, they will fix it, but you will have to send it to them.  If out of warranty, you will have to purchase a Hard Drive and replace it or have someone install it for you, like a computer technician. Hope I've been of some help, I'm not a computer expert,  but the same thing happened to me a few weeks ago. HP Supporters are wonderful here. From what I've learned on here, I am just trying to help out another.  Hope it works out for you.

Recently had this smart disk corrupt disk thing and proceeded to take steps to get rid of it:

Firstly ran the iexplorer.exe
As all my links were dud I had to log into my Admin account, update Malware bytes and run the process from there - did not have to go into safe mode with networking
This removed 3 files I think it was and from that I had to run the unhide process
Now the only thing I haven't done is restore my start menu items

Finally, apart from restoring my start menu, is there anything else I can do to check I am still not infected?

Hello I upgrade my pc with SSD everything seem to go fine but of my TB drive giving me a Smart error now i wonder if SSD has anything to do with Drives failing My theory is that SSD runs on a flash based chip it is very stable but mean time it has huge access point of data that why it is fast The reason i am thinking that SSD is killing my other drives is because my setup is a Media center Software such as windows media center and media browser keep accessing my TB Hitachi drive for movies TV show and so on SSD in my opinion is running other ! A:Can SSD Kill other drives ? Hard drive failed SMART Error !

Ther's not a chance that an SSD caused that. Really, what is a mechanical hard drive supposed to do? They spin up and read/write data. A Mechaninal hard drive would be reading/writing more if the OS was installed on it. That is constant.

A:Disk Check Failed

Follow these instructions to make a disc check. Then report back and tell me what happened.
Many times the actual disc check will fail. Not that serious an event if you can make one later. Lets be sure there are no errors on the disc.
Check your hard disk for errors

If you canot make the check, we will try to repair starting with and sfc scan and going all the way to a repair install if you feel that the problem warrants such action. I will explain the consequences of each choice, but first on to the check.

Be sure to follow these instructions before taking any other action. There is a possiblity of Hard Drive problems.

A:Smart Hard Disk Error 301

Hi, The error may indicate that your Hard Drive is failing and needs to be replaced. First of all, remove and then reconnect the Hard Drive - the procedure is described starting on Page 54 of your Maintenance & Service Guide. Next, tap away at f10 as you start the notebook to enter the bios menu.  Under the Advanced or Diagnostic tab you should find the facility to run a test on the Hard Drive.  Post back with the details of any error messages. Regards, DP-K

That is true on some models but see the manual. In your case the hard drive is shown in the "customer self-repair" section and there is a customer accessible panel so you can remove the hard drive and still keep the warranty. Just put it back and button it up before sending it in to HP.  If this is "the Answer" please click "Accept as Solution" to help others find it.

A:SMART Hard Disk Error

Hello,This usually means that the hard drive is failing and about to die. Your best course of action is to copy the files over to another media ASAP, and replace the failing hard drive.Since Windows Backup does not work, you might consider booting a live Linux CD and manually copy the files over to an external media (external hard drive or flash drive) to avoid straining the failing hard drive further.

Hi, If the first character of your error id is actually 'zero' - ie 0SGG3W-000894-MFPWXG-60EN03 then it does confirm Smart error and that the hard drive is failing and will need to be replaced. Regards, DP-K

Hi when I start my PC I get a blue screen that says, "SMART HARD Disk Error".  I hit enter and get another screen that says, "1720-SMART Hard Drive detecs imminent failure; Failing drive: SATAO; Failing Attribute: # B8".  I can hit F1 and bypass this error and log in sucessfully.   I was getting worried so I ran a quick test on my BIOS and my Hard Drive SMART Check Failed with a failure ID of 9GA9WJ-7HE88J-GXPR6K-609803.  I dont have any removeable storage devices plugged in and my PC is an all in one so I don't know what to do. Is this an issue I need to worry about or just an annoying log in experience?

do you have 2 seperate harddrives or two partitions is the question, the physical primary drive sounds like it has some physical problems. So it will be the drive set to master on an IDE channel , or if its SATa just note make/model from bios and follow the lead connected to the lowest plug number usually masters are plugged into SATA point labelled 1

This is usually an indication that the drive is failing.

To be safe I would suggest that you backup your data/files.

After ensuring that you have proper backups test the hard drive with the manufacturer diagnostics.

Have you run the WD diagnostic on the drive? Usually there are two versions; a dos or boot version and a windows version. Get the boot version and make the bootable CD. Boot the system from the CD you made and run the full or long test on the drive.

When I plug in my Western Digital it gives me the following error:

"IDE Channel 2 Slave Hard Disk.....

Warning: Immediately Back Up"

It is a WD 5000YS, I guess.......

It will not allow my computer to boot when I plug it in. If I connect it alone or with my other HD my cpu will not boot. With it plugged in the initial Win 7 Load screens go by. But eventually it just locks on a solid black screen. I think sometimes with a cursor top left. Surly there is a way to boot my CPU with it hooked up so I can test it?

What can I try? Is there anything I need to tell you to help me?

A:HArd Disk Smart Status Bad - Western Digital

S.m.a.r.t logs hardware failures at hardware level. That disk is dead.

Can you try booting and then connecting it afterwards? If it is a SATA disk it will get recognized eventually, but might also freeze the PC.

I usually use external enclosures to do these things (file transfers from dying HDDs), as the enclosure's interface board does shield the PC from the bunch of errors that would freeze or lock it up if connected directly.

A:SMART Failure Predicted on Hard Drive Disk 2

I just wanted to add that I understand that hardware problems are typically not caused by malware, but this was so sudden and the computer still works so well that I just want to be sure this isn't caused by some sort of malware. The computer's hard drive does have a small partition for Recovery, which I assume is what is being referred to as 'hard drive disk 2". If the Hijack This log is clean and the hardware problem is being caused by something else, do you know anywhere or anyone you could possibly refer me to for help? I heard that if the problem is just with the recovery partition, as long and it's never actually used things might be okay.

If this turns out to have nothing to do with malware, I'm sorry that I wasted your time. I know that you're all really busy and I really appreciate you taking the time to look this over for me. Thank you again!

A:warning says Smart Failure predicted on hard disk

Hmmm- at 3.5yrs old, hard drive could be getting full for one's the free space?
Hard drives, and most other things, do just suddenly quit my 20 year old son, but that's understandable...
There is usually a diagnositic program, free, very easy to do, available at the support site of your hard drive. You generally load their download tool onto a bootable floppy, they give you directions to do this, and follow the tests the hard drive thoroughly, and it passes or fails. The warranty period for some is 3 years....darn! Some companies will send you refurbished, tested drive in exchange for ones that test have to register at the drive companies site, and some will send you a drive before you have to take yours out and send it back...they give you 30 days to send one back (you pay the freight one way) That is for Maxtor Corp. drives, and probably some other top brands....but, the warranty period is up unless you have a drive that came with extended warranty...check the label down on the drive itself- and, it is usually hidden...have to shut things all down, take drive out carefully, to see the label side- perhaps yours is visible, ((but your neck may never be the same again)) The date of manufacture is written on the lable, compare this to what drive's website says about warranty for your make and model of hard driive..If by chance you are still covered, you usually have to fill out a form for an RMA number to use to send it back to company. Drives are fairly reasonable to buy these days....there are some pitfalls, though, with buying a larger capacity drive, things like BIOS size cant generally use the huge 40 or 80GB drives without some extra help. New drives come with software that will let the drive be used to full capacity, and instructions to use that. They also come with drive copying software can copy old one to new one and be up and running quickly...IF the old drive is in copying mood.... You also have to learn about things like detecting a hard drive in BIOS, jumpers to set the hard drive as Slave or Master, and how to work inside the computer. Instructions in step by step form are available... it isn't that hard to learn....You could of course enlist a techie friend who owes you, ((but usually it's the other way around, so don't ask if they have helped you and you haven't paid much attention to them since))
BEFORE you do any uninstalling, you could try a Registry restore, takes just a minute or two, and puts the system back as it was a day or so usually have your choice of 4 good copies of the Registry....available by booting with either a good, virus free startup disk, OR by pressing the CTRL or F8 key at bootup, a menu should come up on DOS screen, select "Command Prompt" hit Enter key....
when the A:/ appears, just type in this"
A:/ C: That is to change to hard drive directory, [hit Enter again] Then, from C:>/ type following:
scanreg /restore [there is one space after scanreg!!]

hit the Enter key again....the program will start up, and show you what it found....shoud have at least 4 Started Registry one that says "Started" the day before the problem happened....follow the prompts, all should return to normal. You could also do a search here on the forums for
"Restore Registry" or, "scanreg /restore" there are lots of them...with better directions than I have for you. Here is one link to some good posts about this"
Some antivirus programs, if left running while software installs, can cause weird, false alarms like this. Best not wait, immediately put most important things somewhere safe....but, I would not use this program to do it,,,,try disks, CDs.

Hi Recently the Tech guy at my work threw out a bunch of computer towers and other computer parts etc In amongst all of that was a Dell Inspiron Mini with no battery or AC adapter So I took it home and plugged in an AC adapter that met the specs It powered up and says the following SMART Failure Predicted on Hard Disk Warning Immediately back-up you data and replace your hard disk drive A failure may be imminent Press F to continue I press F and Inspiron Mini Disk on Predicted 1012 Failure Hard SMART 2 Dell it Starts Windows It then goes to a screen stating Windows Error Recovery Windows failed to start A recent hardware or software change might be the cause Then they give you options Launch Startup Repair recommended or Start Windows Normally I tried both of these without much luck During the Startup Repair it says Startup Repair cannot repair this computer automatically Well I know that the problem is obviously the hard drive is corrupt I will need to replace the hard drive I Dell Inspiron Mini 1012 SMART Failure Predicted on Hard Disk 2 have tried to click F a ton of times during boot up and it won t get me to that option I have tried plugging in an external cd dvd drive and boot from the cd It cannot get the mini to boot up that way I changed the boot sequence to boot up from cd drive first I don t understand why the F function won t work Also during the System Recovery option I got it to a screen stating To access recovery options log on as a local user To access the command prompt as well log on using an administrator account Username admin Password I left password blank and it comes up saying the username or the password is incorrect I cannot change the username from admin and I have no idea what the password is Does anyone know what I should do before I try to replace the hard drive Any opinions are welcome Thanks nbsp

Welcome aboard
There is no reason for you to worry about malware since SMART test clearly indicate your hard drive failing.
You should back up your data immediately (while you can), buy new hard drive and reinstall Windows.

Hi everyone.

Recently, I've had problems with my computer running Windows 7 64-bit SP1. It took a long time to get from Starting Windows to my desktop. And it was extremely slow when using the computer. It took forever to open a folder or a file. This morning, I switched on my computer and I got this error message at boot:

3rd Master Hard Disk:S.M.A.R.T. Status BAD, Backup and Replace

I'm guessing my hard drive is damaged? Any way of repairing the hard drive? What are the next steps I should take? And in the event that it can't be repaired, any way to salvage the files inside?

Thank you for reading and hope you can help!

A:Error message at boot : Hard Disk:SMART Status Bad, Backup and replace

Back up the drive and replace it. It may run long enough for you to get your data off of it. I would recommend that you put a fresh install of Windows on your new drive. Yours is probably corrupt from the bad drive. I would just back up important data anyway, never mind the programs. You'll need to reinstall them anyway.

There's no real way to fix the drive, and even if you could, it would be uneconomical. Throw it away.

Your hard drive must be replaced. Post back if you want specific help with that. On  your model it is manageable for the end user to do, although not real easy. Are you under warranty? Manual see p. 46.  If this is "the Answer" please click "Accept as Solution" to help others find it.

A:Hard Drive Short DST Check: FAILED

Hi, The 24 character error code is a failure of the short Disk Self Test and would indicate that the Hard Drive is failing and needs to be replaced. As your notebook shipped with Windows 10, it is probably still under warranty, so contact HP and arrange to have the drive replaced - If needed, you can check your warranty status Here. If you live in the US, contact HP Here. If you are in another part of the world, start Here. Regards, DP-K

A:Hard Drive Optimized failed DST Check

Jenna, welcome to the forum. I believe that the hard drive has failed.  Here is the Troubleshooting section for the hard drive.  I suggest following the guide on testing it.  If it shows that it has failed, your only option is to replace it.  Here is a guide to help you replace it.  You should assure that the new hard drive is the same size or larger than the existing one. Please click the Thumbs up + button if I have helped you and click Accept as Solution if your problem is solved.

My laptop isn't starting , when i open it i get the hp logo then a black screen , when i made a fast system test the hard drive short DST check failed with a failer ID: PLW6J2-6SL88N-MFPWXG-60RR03 and a Product ID: main concern is the data stored on the hard disk what can i do to get the laptop working a don't loose the data ?

A:hard drive short DST check failed

Stop using the laptop. Replace the hard drive with a new one. Get a SATA to usb adapter to connect the old drive (which you will remove) to another computer to try to salvage data. There is a good chance data is still recoverable this way.

Hi I been using my laptop as usual today and all of a sudden a notification popped up saying hard drive failure imminent. I restarted the laptop, pressed f2 and ran a system test. Everything in the test passes expect from the Hard drive short dst check, which failed.Failure ID: 0SG2J1-7K289U-XD7WLJ-60VW03I'm not sure why this has occurred. I regular run virus scans and defrag the hard drive. The hard drive is 1TB and around 100GB is used. The laptop is only 2 years old and ran out of warranty around April/May (typical). I don't have any recovery disc or back ups, is the laptop now unusable? I try to boot up but the laptop either freezes on login or on desktop. I have all my uni work, including my dissertation report on there, please help.ThanksDale
