Boot device not found and hdd not found

Q: Boot device not found and hdd not found

I have had my laptop for 2 years and has been broke for nearly a year! The screen comes up with "boot device not found, install operating system". So I bought a system recovery disk, and I went through the steps. But, it comes up with "HDD NOT FOUND". I have checked the hard drive and everything inside the computer!!!! HELPPP

Preferred Solution: Boot device not found and hdd not found

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/directdownload.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Try using the first sata port. See your manufacturer's documentation on which one that is.

A:No bootable device found-please enter a new boot device

Try, removing the battery, unplug the device and holding the Power button down for at least 30 seconds. Re install the hard drive, making sure of proper connection. Replace battery and Power plug, go into bios and set optimized defaults. Then see if the hard drive is recognized. Try to listen and see if the hard drive is spinning up.

Hello, I have this issue that has been going on for 3 months. It says that the boot device is not found and I went to the support page to try and reset but it just goes back to it. I installed the stuff I needed to on my grandma's computer and put it onto a flash drive but that didn't work. Can someone help me with this issue? It would be much appreciated, but if you can't, thank you for your time.-Louie Benavidez

yeah, me again. Got a Dell PowerEdge server w/2 36G hd. It is running the SIS for this school system, the program is web-based. It was "Supposed" to install an automatic update for the software (PowerSchool) last night. When I got to work this morning, it had frozen, so I tried re-booting. Well, Now it gives me a message saying that "No Boot Device Found, F1 to retry boot F2 to enteru setup. Neitheru option works. It never boots to the point that you can enter the SCSI utility. Also noticed that the HDD access light is constantly staying lit. Dell technical support tried really hard, but we found no solution. What to do now??

I am trying to install Windows 7 Pro on a number of Dell Optiplex 980 machines. I put in the windows disc in to the drive, restart the machine then I get the following message on the screen. "boot device not found" press F1 to reboot, F2 for setup, F5 for on board diagnostic. I am not sure what to do next?

A:boot device not found

If the drives have been formatted ? ensure they have been Initilized , you can slave them to any other working Pc to do so.
Then reinstall drive in original Pc , enter Bios and select Boot Sequence and select CDROM as first Boot  and save and Exit.
Load Win 7 Disc in Cdrom and reboot , hit any key when prompted to Boot from Cdrom.

If still fails ? check Cabling to drives .

What does boot device not found mean?

A:What does boot device not found mean?

It means the system is looking for a device that can boot to an operating system. Typically the hard drive. Long story short, there is likely a problem with the hard drive. Provide the model number and we can direct you how to run diagnostics to see how bad the problem may be.

Ok. here's how this happened. I have a friends computer that has a sata drive and wanted xp on it. Since i didn't want to spend the time finding the drivers and slipstreaming them to the disk i decided to plug in the sata drive to my computer as a slave and install the OS through my computer. When i did that i told it to let me choose the drive letter to install to. Everything installed fine. My machine went to a dual boot setup and his hard drive booted up fine. Well all the boot files are stored on my computer and when I hooked up his sata drive to his computer it doesn't find a boot device. I thought that all it would need are some boot files, so i copied boot.ini, ntldr, and ntdetect. it still has the problem. am i missing some files still to boot?

A:no boot device found

you can try FIXBOOT and FIXMBR in the recovery console.

if those don't work. start over, install on your friend's computer. that'll be faster than trying to patch together a bootable OS.

Hi, my computer recently failed to start, I tried to system restore and that also failed, so I decided to run my install disk so as I could enter the command prompt and clean and partition my hard drive using diskpart... The computer allowed me to do this, which is why I don't think my hardrive is dead, but since exiting command prompt and restarting computer, I'm now just getting black screen that says no boot device found, please insert bootable disc and press any key to continue... Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can resolve this please... And if so bear in mind I'm not very tech savvy so need it in dummies terms please lol

A:No boot device found... Help please

In order to help you, you need to post ALL of your exact system specs; ie exact mb, exact cpu, exact pw supply, etc, etc. If this is a big box system ie dell, hp, whatever, post the exact make and model# If you have a service tag, post that as well.

It does sound like your hd has failed or possibly a failed cable, loose pw connector, etc. You can test the drive with the drive mfg's diagnostic. You download this from whomever mfg the drive. Since your system will not boot from the hd, you need the dos or boot version [it runs from bootable media]

Usually that error indicates a hard drive failure. Here are different methods to check your hard drive. Testing for Hardware failures   **The 'UEFI System diagnostics' and 'Basic System Diagnostics' will work even if the hard drive has failed.  If you found my answer helpful please say thanks by clicking on the Thumb's Up icon.       If my answer solved your problem please mark it as the Accepted Solution. @Nagelo?, welcome to the forum. When requesting help you should always include the make/model (i.e. p6-xxxx) of the computer and/or monitor. This information is necessary for us to review the specifications of them.  I believe that you may have a failed hard drive and want to have the Product Specifications.

Vivalavonyon Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums!I wish I had good news for you -- but I don't ... Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but that error message means that your hard drive has failed. It will need to be replaced.Once you have the replacement drive, you will need to use something known as HP Recovery Media to restore your PC to working condition. This is a set of DVDs and a CD, or USB stick, that will erase the hard drive (removing all data, settings, and applications, reinstall the original OS, drivers, and some HP Utilities. In some cases, you may be able to order a USB stick instead of disks. You have to order these from HP; they can not be downloaded. You can look online for Recovery Media starting with the linked paged: http://support.hp.com/us-en/driversOnce there, input your Product name or number. On your Software and Drivers Download page, select your Operating System and and Version. Click "Update". If HP Recovery Media is available for your machine, down near the bottom of the page, you will see an entry for Order Recovery Media-CD/DVD/USB. Click the "+" symbol to expand that entry and click on Order Media for details.Or, if you prefer, you can do the same by contacting HP Customer Service: If you live in the US or Canada, contact information is on this page: http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/phone-assist.html#section1If you live elsewhere, contact information is on this page: http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/ww-contact-us.htmlNOTE: After you get through, stay on the line until you are finally able to talk to some one -- it can take a while! If you have trouble finding a phone number, then try: 1 (800) 474-6836 If HP no longer provides Recovery Media for your model, a couple of other sites you should check are: http://www.computersurgeons.com/ and http://www.restoredisks.com/Good Luck

A:Boot device not found

That message usually means the hard drive has failed, the bootloader is corrupt, or there is a non-system disk in a device that is set in the "Setup Menu" as a boot device.  Since you are running Windows 8, that most likely eliminates the setup menu item, but not always.  I would start by checking the 1st boot device in the setup menu.  After that, you will need a repair disk to try to test either of the other two.  You can make a repair disk on another working Windows 8 PC OR try the Windows 10 meida and pick "repair this PC" instead of installing.

linchu Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums!I read your post about your no boot device problem and wanted to help.I read your post about no boot device found and wanted to help. These problems are generally due to one of two basic problems:1) Failed hard drive2) Corrupted/missing boot loader filesAs to the first, please follow the directions in this link for testing your hard drive: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c00439024If that confirms your drive has failed, then you need to replace it.  Please report back if that is the case.As to the second, you will need access to a working PC for this step in order to create the media needed to repair your PC boot loader. You will need to create something known as a Win7 Repair CD -- which you could have made for free when Win7 was working.  This will repair the boot loader files, and if that is the problem, your PC will boot OK after that. But now, that can be obtained (for a fee) from this link:  http://neosmart.net/blog/2009/windows-7-system-repair-discs/When you download this file, it will be an ISO file.To make a bootable CD from it, you will need to download and install ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/Once you have that installed, run it, select the option "Write image file to disc" and select the ISO file you downloaded, and point it to a blank CD.To make a bootable USB stick from it, you will need to download and install RUFUS: https://rufus.akeo.ie/Once you have that, run it, in the Device entry, use the pulldown to select the USB stick.  Down near the bottom right, where is says "Create a bootable disk using", select the ISO file you downloaded.-------------------------------------Boot from the media you created, and follow the directions in this link: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/681-startup-repair.htmlYou will probably have to run Startup Repair three times for it to fix all the boot loader problems. When done, your PC should boot OK.Good Luck========================================================================I am a volunteer and I do not work for, nor do I represent, HP.---------------------------------------------------------------If my posts helped you, please click the Thumbs-Up symbol on the left of the Reply button to say thanks. If my posts solved your problem please click "Accept As Solution" -- to help others find the solution.========================================================================

sudhanshukumar Since the PC passed the UEFI test, the drive should be OK -- which implies this is a Windows problem. You will need access to a working PC for this step in order to create the media needed to repair your PC boot loader.Once you have that, please download and create Win10 install media from this link: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/media-creation-tool-install?ocid=ms_wol_win10Yes ... I know that is for Win10, but it uses the same generation boot loader as Win8x, so it can be used to do boot loader repairs for Win8x as well as for Win10.Boot from the media you created, and follow the directions in this link:  http://www.windowswally.com/how-to-fix-error-code-0xc0000185/You will probably have to run Startup Repair three times for it to fix all the boot loader problems. When done, your PC should boot OK. Good Luck========================================================================I am a volunteer and I do not work for, nor do I represent, HP.---------------------------------------------------------------If my posts helped you, please click the Thumbs-Up symbol on my post to say thanks. If my posts solved your problem please click "Accept As Solution".========================================================================

A:Boot Device Not Found. Please Help!

One way or another you are probably going to have to remove and reseat the drive since this is a BIOS level message and the drive is just not being detected.

If that fails the drive probably requires replacement.

If the drive is not being detected you will not be able to recover data from it -- although you could try to mount it through a USB port computer using an adapter.

You can also try building a Linux booter and see if it detects it.

http://www.puppylinux.com/

If you have an XP disk you can try >>

http://www.ubcd4win.com/

However neither of these will be of any value if the problem is truly that the drive is undetectable.

A:Boot Device not found

Go into the diagnostics (F2 as you power up) and run the hard drive diagnostic test. What the message means is that the hard drive has lost the boot files and that can happen a few ways, but we need to rule out a hardware failure.

tinashe1 Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums!Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but that code means your hard drive has failed.  Your only option at this point is to replace it. Once you have the new drive, you need to order HP Recovery Media to restore your PC to factory settings. Click the "+" symbol to expand that entty and click on Order Media for details.Or, if you prefer, you can do the same by contacting HP Customer Service:If you live in the US or Canada, contact information is on this page: http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/phone-assist.html#section1If you live elsewhere, contact information is on this page: http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/ww-contact-us.htmlNOTE: After you get through, stay on the line until you are finally able to talk to some one -- it can take a while!---------------------------------------However, HP Customer Support is generally not available on the weekends, so you might have to wait until Monday to contact them.---------------------------------------If HP no longer provides Recovery Media for your model, a couple of other sites you can check are: http://www.computersurgeons.com/  and http://www.restoredisks.com/Good Luck========================================================================I am a volunteer and I do not work for, nor do I represent, HP.---------------------------------------------------------------If my posts helped you, please click the Thumbs-Up symbol on my post to say thanks. If my posts solved your problem please click "Accept As Solution".========================================================================

peggyups Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but ANYTIME you spill water on a notebook, there is going to be SOME damage -- the only issue is, how much! You can work through the details in this thread to see if anything helps: You Just Spilled Water Or Coffee On Your Laptop - Here's What You Should Do You should also try the steps in this thread to see if the hard drive has failed: Testing a Hard Disk from the BIOS | HP® Customer Support If nothing there helps, your only recourse is to take the notebook to an HP Service Center where they can disassemble it, assess the damage, and see what is involved in repairing it. I have a suggestion, you could download linux,  wary puppy would probably be the best option.  Make a linux live usb and boot into wary puppy then save all of your files.  The thing about a live usb is that you don't need to install linux to your hard drive it will just run from the flash drive.  Download here:  http://www.pendrivelinux.com/universal-usb-installer-easy-as-1-2-3/.  Good luck

Hi Then it is my opinion that you have wiped the system, or at least access to the system, and probably removed all the partition data and contents thereof. So it is wiped securely, but it's usefulness to a novice is now questionable. So if you are donating to an organisation I would expect they could install a new OS etc and all will be well. If in doubt please ask.

I was doing some work and the laptop froze and rebooted displaying the windows recovery page but it was stuck at 0% for a long time so I forced shutdown using the on/off button. When I turned it back on it displayed an error message reading "boot device not found - please install operating system on hard drive 3f0" I firstly tried reseating the hard drive, then reset settings to default in bios, and ran memory test and hard drive test. Memory test passed but the hard drive test showed "smart check: not installed & long day: not installed". Despite all the aforementioned attempts, the problem persists. Please help

A:Boot device not found

Hi @ Sharwin, Thanks for being a part of the HP community. It is a great place to get your questions answered by experts .I saw your post regarding the hard drive not being detected by the computer. Error ?3F0?. It was commendable on your part to perform all these steps like reseating the hard drive and running diagnostics on it. Your post states that the HDD tests throw up an error ?Smart check: not installed. Long DST: not installed? It is a privilege to work with a technical specialist like yourself. This is a clear case of a hard drive failure or the motherboard connector that connects to the hard drive is faulty. You will need to contact phone support to get the unit serviced by visiting this link: http://hp.com/contacthp Hope this helps. Sounds like the hard drive has failed and will need to be replaced. If you are still in warranty HP will send a replacement. If not a retail laptop SATA hard drive can be used. Just be sure to get one of at least equal capacity as the original in order to use Recovery Discs. It can be larger, but not smaller capacity. For instance if you have a 500GB hdd you could use a 750GB hdd but not a 320GB hdd. Have you tried accessing System Diagnostics by tapping the Esc key immediately after powering on? That should bring up a menu where F2 System Diagnostics is a choice.

Hi there Welcome to the community!  It appears that you are most probably facing an issue with the storage drive inside the laptop. Any idea what it is? If the laptop is still under warranty I would strongly suggest using the RMA process to get it fixed.  You may be facing either a specific issue with the storage drive itself or with its connection to the motherboard. If you manage to get the laptop running try to run some diagnostic tools from the manufacturer of the storage drive and see if it passes the tests. Contacting HP's live support is a good idea at this point as you may get good tips and assistance there.  Captain_WD.

Working on a HP Envy M6 laptop. Getting the "no boot device found" error when booting. Only thing I can access is bios. Its a windows 8 preinstalled machine so I do not know the product key nor have an install or recovery disk.

I am able to access the drive when hooking up it externally to my win 7 machine ( had to save some files on the drive ).

Was only able to find a 8.1 install disc so I made a bootable USB to try and do a refresh. Still got device not found. Had to turn on legacy support in the bios. Detects the USB except repair isn't helpful. Tried the refresh and ...yep, hard drive is locked ( imagine because I am in legacy mode ).

So what do?
Legacy - hard drive gets locked
Non legacy - hard drive / usb not detected

Really stumped on what to do. Don't think I can downgrade to 7 either.

A:No boot device found

Means that the hard drive is either not working (ie no power, not installed, or just a dead drive). The other would be a blown IDE/SATA controller on the motherboard.

Hi, Shutdown the notebook.  Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to enter the Start-up Menu.  Select the Diagnostic Menu option ( f2 ) and run the tests on the Hard Drive. Post back with the results, including any error codes that may be generated. Can you also post back with the full Model No. and Product No. of your 15 series notebook - see Here for a guide on locating this information. Regards, DP-K

Helpkyky Wish I had good news for you -- but I don't. That error message indicates that your hard drive has failed, so you will need to replace it. Ordinarily, I would recommend using HP Recovery Media to restore your PC to its original condition. That would erase the entire drive, format the drive, and install the OS, the drivers, and the HP utilities.Unfortunately, there is no HP Recovery Media linked to the HP Product Page for your PC. This could be an oversight by HP, or it could also mean that HP no longer stocks the recovery media for your PC.You can try contacting HP Customer Support directly, using the links below, to see if you can order if from them:If you live in the US or Canada, contact information is on this page: http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/phone-assist.html#section1If you live elsewhere, contact information is on this page: http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/ww-contact-us.htmlNOTE: After you get through, stay on the line until you are finally able to talk to some one -- it can take a while!---------------------------------------However, HP Customer Support is generally not available on the weekends, so you might have to wait until Monday to contact them.---------------------------------------Good Luck

Don't know -- there is not a single "standard" price. Also, if your PC can boot from USB, HP sometimes has the option to order a USB stick instead of DVDs. And, if HP no longer stocks the media, the other places might -- and they have different charges. I've heard ranges of $10 to $40.Good Luck

Can you get into diagnostics (F2) or the BIOS (F10) to run a hard drive test? Odds are the hard drive has gone bad.

Hi, I recently installed a new hard drive in my laptop since my old one messed up, and now eveytime I turn on my computer it tells me that "Boot Device Not Found Please Install an operating system on your hard disk". I've also tried system recovery by hitting f11 but that doesn't work also. What should I do?

A:Boot device not found

Sfaisalshah Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums!I read your post about not being able to boot and wanted to help -- but need more information. You said you "installed" a new drive in your laptop -- but that tells me nothing about the details.  Other than inserting the drive into the laptop, what else did you do? Please provide some details. Also, we need to know the detailed product number of the laptop, so please follow these directions: Finding Your HP Product Model Number | HP® Customer Support Also need to know what OS version you are using.  And, if it's Win10, did that come preinstalled on the laptop, or did you do the Win10 Upgrade? We can proceed once you provide the information. Thanks

This is a Compac laptop running Windows Vista. I am getting random messages that a boot device can not be found. If I try restarting, I may get the message again, or, it will start normally. This does not occur on every reboot. Is seems to be random. I have run the hard drive diagnostic and it passed all the tests with no issues. Thanks for any help or suggestions.

Press any key to reboot the machine!!

Can this be fixed at all or do I have to look at data recovery?

A:No boot device found

We can't advise much based on no information.
What system model?
Does the system recognize the hard drive (F2 at powerup to check)?
If it does recognize the drive, have you run a full diagnostic on the drive?  F12 at powerup.

Hello,   I just received my brand new XPS 13 in the mail today, when I opened it up and turned it on it read "no boot devices found, press any key to restart your computer."  After several attempts in restarting and also booting to the other boot devices on the laptop (Windows manager and the partition itself" none of these have solved the issue.  From what I am understanding of this, is this a hardware issue with the SSD on the laptop? Or is there something that I can do that will fix this issue?

Whenever you get Hard Disk [3F0] message that indicates that the Hard Disk Drive requires a replacement to resolve the issueHP will provide a replacement Hard Disk Drive if the Notebook warranty is Active, If not you need buy a SATA Hard Disk Drive from a retail shop nearbyPlease make sure you are getting at least equal capacity as the original one in order to use Recovery Disks. If you need you can buy a larger, but not smaller capacity Hard Disk Drive. For example if you have a 500GB Hard Disk Drive you can upgrade it to 750GB Hard Disk Drive but not 320GB Hard Disk DrivePlease try the below shown troubleshooting steps once:Step 01. Remove the battery and unplug the AC/Power AdapterStep 02. Press and hold the Power button for more than 30 SecondsStep 03. Plug in the AC/Power Adapter (leave the Battery out for now)Step 04. Press the Power button and check if the Unit works normalIf the above mentioned steps does not help, then you can try reseating the Hard Drive on your NotebookIf the issue persists again please Contact HP if your HP Notebook is under warranty, HP would replace the Hard Disk Drive and provide you a Recovery media to restore factory operating system after replacement (if you've not yet created Recovery Discs/USB Media)Note: Back up all the personal data to an external drive if it's possible. Otherwise you could connect the failed HDD via SATA to USB adapter with another PC or same PC after replacement of HDD & re-installation of OS and try copying /recovering the files. Please click on the link In order to Identify, Prevent, Diagnose & Recover from Drive Failures on HP Notebook Hard Drives & Solid State Drives :http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c02876562.pdfPlease check your notebook warranty to verify the status and order a new Hard Disk DriveHope this helps, for any further queries reply to the post and feel free to join us again**Click the KUDOS star on left to say Thanks**Make it easier for other people to find solutions by marking a Reply 'Accept as Solution' if it solves your problem.Thank You,K N R KAlthough I am an HP employee, I am speaking for myself and not for HP

If you're still using a PATA (wide flat cable) optical drive, you may need to check your master / slave jumpers. PATA devices usually need to be told if they are first, second, or all alone on their IDE channel.
